Tracking Ultrafast Photocurrents in the Weyl Semimetal TaAs Using THz Emission Spectroscopy

Light-induced electronic polarization in antiferromagnetic Cr2O3

In a solid, the electronic subsystem can exhibit incipient order with lower point group symmetry than the crystal lattice. Ultrafast external fields that couple exclusively to electronic order parameters have rarely been investigated, however, despite their potential importance in inducing exotic effects. Here we show that when inversion symmetry is broken by the antiferromagnetic order in Cr2O3, transmitting a linearly polarized light pulse through the crystal gives rise to an in-plane rotational symmetry-breaking (from C3 to C1) via optical rectification. Using interferometric time-resolved second harmonic generation, we show that the ultrafast timescale of the symmetry reduction is indicative of a purely electronic response; the underlying spin and crystal structures remain unaffected. The symmetry-broken state exhibits a dipole moment, and its polar axis can be controlled with the incident light. Our results establish a coherent nonlinear optical protocol by which to break electronic symmetries and produce unconventional electronic effects in solids.

Defect-induced helicity dependent terahertz emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films

Nonlinear transport enabled by symmetry breaking in quantum materials has aroused considerable interest in condensed matter physics and interdisciplinary electronics. However, achieving a nonlinear optical response in centrosymmetric Dirac semimetals via defect engineering has remained a challenge. Here, we observe the helicity dependent terahertz emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films via the circular photogalvanic effect under normal incidence. This is activated by a controllable out-of-plane Te-vacancy defect gradient, which we unambiguously evidence with electron ptychography. The defect gradient lowers the symmetry, which not only induces the band spin splitting but also generates the giant Berry curvature dipole responsible for the circular photogalvanic effect. We demonstrate that the THz emission can be manipulated by the Te-vacancy defect concentration. Furthermore, the temperature evolution of the THz emission features a minimum in the THz amplitude due to carrier compensation. Our work provides a universal strategy for symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric Dirac materials for efficient nonlinear transport.

Emergence of threefold symmetric helical photocurrents in epitaxial low twinned Bi2Se3

We present evidence of a strong circular photon drag effect (PDE) in topological insulators (TIs) through the observation of helicity-dependent topological photocurrents with threefold rotational symmetry using THz spectroscopy in epitaxially-grown Bi2Se3 with reduced crystallographic twinning. We establish how twinned domains introduce competing nonlinear optical (NLO) responses inherent to the crystal structure that obscure geometry-sensitive optical processes through the introduction of a spurious mirror symmetry. Minimizing the twinning defect reveals strong NLO response currents whose magnitude and direction depend on the alignment of the excitation to the crystal axes and follow the threefold rotational symmetry of the crystal. Notably, photocurrents arising from helical light reverse direction for left/right circular polarizations and maintain a strong azimuthal dependence-a result uniquely attributable to the circular PDE, where the photon momentum acts as an applied in-plane field stationary in the laboratory frame. Our results demonstrate new levels of control over the magnitude and direction of photocurrents in TIs and that the study of single-domain films is crucial to reveal hidden phenomena that couple topological order and crystal symmetries.

Circular Photogalvanic Current in Ni-Doped Cd3As2 Films Epitaxied on GaAs(111)B Substrate

Magnetic element doped Cd₃As₂ Dirac semimetal has attracted great attention for revealing the novel quantum phenomena and infrared opto-electronic applications. In this work, the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) was investigated at various temperatures for the Ni-doped Cd₃As₂ films which were grown on GaAs(111)B substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. The CPGE current generation was found to originate from the structural symmetry breaking induced by the lattice strain and magnetic doping in the Ni-doped Cd₃As₂ films, similar to that in the undoped ones. However, the CPGE current generated in the Ni-doped Cd₃As₂ films was approximately two orders of magnitude smaller than that in the undoped one under the same experimental conditions and exhibited a complex temperature variation. While the CPGE current in the undoped film showed a general increase with rising temperature. The greatly reduced CPGE current generation efficiency and its complex variation with temperature in the Ni-doped Cd₃As₂ films was discussed to result from the efficient capture of photo-generated carriers by the deep-level magnetic impurity bands and enhanced momentum relaxation caused by additional strong impurity scattering when magnetic dopants were introduced.

Narrowband, Angle-Tunable, Helicity-Dependent Terahertz Emission from Nanowires of the Topological Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2

All-optical control of terahertz pulses is essential for the development of optoelectronic devices for next-generation quantum technologies. Despite substantial research in THz generation methods, polarization control remains difficult. Here, we demonstrate that by exploiting band structure topology, both helicity-dependent and helicity-independent THz emission can be generated from nanowires of the topological Dirac semimetal Cd₃As₂. We show that narrowband THz pulses can be generated at oblique incidence by driving the system with optical (1.55 eV) pulses with circular polarization. Varying the incident angle also provides control of the peak emission frequency, with peak frequencies spanning 0.21-1.40 THz as the angle is tuned from 15 to 45°. We therefore present Cd₃As₂ nanowires as a promising novel material platform for controllable terahertz emission.

Generation of Tunable Terahertz Waves from Tailored Versatile Spintronic Meta-Antenna Arrays

Broadband spintronic terahertz (THz) radiation can be efficiently generated by spin-to-charge current conversion in a ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic heterostructure. There had been many studies on realizing the enhancement or the modulation of spintronic terahertz waves. However, reported devices so far focus on implementing certain specific modulation methods, either related to the spintronic stacks or related to the metamaterial structures. In this study, a set of femtosecond laser-driven versatile spintronic terahertz devices are proposed by integrating meta-antenna structures with W/CoFeB/Pt nanolayer stacks. These monolithic integrated devices exhibit spintronic terahertz wave emission, spectral modulation, and polarization manipulation simultaneously. The terahertz pulses are generated within the ferromagnetic heterostructure interfaces and transmitted along the metallic structures, leading to the modulation of the spintronic terahertz waves. Results have shown that the center-frequency shift is up to 140 GHz and the value of ellipticity can reach 0.6, demonstrating a set of integrated and efficient spintronic terahertz devices to modulate the emitted wave. In addition, compared with the slotline antenna, the maximum peak value of the bandpass band is enhanced up to 1.63 times by carefully designing the metamaterial structure. The spintronic meta-antenna array proposed here paves an integrated way for the manipulation of spintronic terahertz optoelectronic devices.

Laser-Induced Hole Coherence and Spatial Self-Phase Modulation in the Anisotropic 3D Weyl Semimetal TaAs

Laser-induced electron coherence is a fascinating topic in manipulating quantum materials. Recently, it has been shown that laser-induced electron coherence in 2D materials can produce a third-order nonlinear optical response spatial self-phase modulation (SSPM), which has been used to develop a novel all-optical switching scheme. However, such investigations have mainly focused on electron coherence, whereas laser-induced hole coherence is rarely explored. Here, the observation of the optical Kerr effect in 3D Weyl semimetal TaAs flakes is reported. The nonlinear susceptibility (χ⁽³⁾ ) is obtained, which exhibits a surprisingly high value (with χ o n e - l a y e r ( 3 ) \[{\bm{\chi }}_{{\bf one}{\bm{ - }}{\bf layer}}^{{\bf (3)}}\] = 9.9 × 10^-9 e.s.u. or 1.4 × 10^-16  m²  V^-2 at 532 nm). This cannot be explained by the conventional electron mobility, but can be well understood by the unique high anisotropic hole mobility of TaAs. The wind-chime model and χ⁽³⁾ carrier mobility correlation adequately explain the results, suggesting the crucial role of laser-induced nonlocal ac hole coherence. These observations extend the understanding of SSPM from 2D to 3D quantum materials with anisotropic carrier mobility and from electron coherence to hole coherence.

Giant photon momentum locked THz emission in a centrosymmetric Dirac semimetal

Strong second-order optical nonlinearities often require broken material centrosymmetry, thereby limiting the type and quality of materials used for nonlinear optical devices. Here, we report a giant and highly tunable terahertz (THz) emission from thin polycrystalline films of the centrosymmetric Dirac semimetal PtSe₂. Our PtSe₂ THz emission is turned on at oblique incidence and locked to the photon momentum of the incident pump beam. Notably, we find an emitted THz efficiency that is giant: It is two orders of magnitude larger than the standard THz-generating nonlinear crystal ZnTe and has values approaching that of the noncentrosymmetric topological material TaAs. Further, PtSe₂ THz emission displays THz sign and amplitude that is controlled by the incident pump polarization and helicity state even as optical absorption is only weakly polarization dependent and helicity independent. Our work demonstrates how photon drag can activate pronounced optical nonlinearities that are available even in centrosymmetric Dirac materials.

Resonant Second-Harmonic Generation as a Probe of Quantum Geometry

Nonlinear responses are actively studied as probes of topology and band geometric properties of solids. Here, we show that second harmonic generation serves as a probe of the Berry curvature, quantum metric, and quantum geometric connection. We generalize the theory of second harmonic generation to include Fermi surface effects in metallic systems, and finite scattering timescale. In doped materials the Fermi surface and Fermi sea cause all second harmonic terms to exhibit resonances, and we identify two novel contributions to the second harmonic signal: a double resonance due to the Fermi surface and a higher-order pole due to the Fermi sea. We discuss experimental observation in the monolayer of time reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal WTe_{2} and the parity-time reversal symmetric topological antiferromagnet CuMnAs.

Terahertz wave emission from the trigonal layered PtBi2

In this work, broadband terahertz (THz) wave emissions have been detected from the trigonal layered PtBi₂ on the excitation of the femtosecond laser pulses. Such THz generation is found to arise from the dominated linear photogalvanic effect, which is further discovered to strongly depend on the unique electronic structures of PtBi₂. Furthermore, an effective nonlinear susceptibility of PtBi₂ is also obtained and is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of the traditional nonlinear crystal for THz generation.

Network analysis of Weyl semimetal photogalvanic systems

We develop a general methodology capable of analyzing the response of Weyl semimetal (WSM) photogalvanic networks. Both single-port and multiport configurations are investigated via extended versions of Norton's theorem. An equivalent circuit model is provided where the photogalvanic currents induced in these gapless topological materials can be treated as polarization-dependent sources. To illustrate our approach, we carry out transport simulations in arbitrarily shaped configurations involving pertinent WSMs. Our analysis indicates that the photogalvanic currents collected in a multi-electrode system directly depend on the geometry of the structure as well as on the excitation and polarization pattern of the incident light. Our results could be helpful in designing novel optoelectronic systems that make use of the intriguing features associated with WSMs.

Direct Observation of Coherent Longitudinal and Shear Acoustic Phonons in TaAs Using Ultrafast X-Ray Diffraction

Using femtosecond time-resolved x-ray diffraction, we investigated optically excited coherent acoustic phonons in the Weyl semimetal TaAs. The low symmetry of the (112) surface probed in our experiment enables the simultaneous excitation of longitudinal and shear acoustic modes, whose dispersion closely matches our simulations. We observed an asymmetry in the spectral line shape of the longitudinal mode that is notably absent from the shear mode, suggesting a time-dependent frequency chirp that is likely driven by photoinduced carrier diffusion. We argue on the basis of symmetry that these acoustic deformations can transiently alter the electronic structure near the Weyl points and support this with model calculations. Our study underscores the benefit of using off-axis crystal orientations when optically exciting acoustic deformations in topological semimetals, allowing one to transiently change their crystal and electronic structures.

Strain-induced circular photogalvanic current in Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 films epitaxied on a GaAs(111)B substrate

Dirac semimetal (DSM) Cd₃As₂ has drawn great attention for exploring the novel quantum phenomena and high-speed optoelectronic applications. The circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) current, resulting from the optically-excited spin orientation transport, was theoretically predicted to vanish in an ideal Dirac system due to the symmetric photoexcitation about the Dirac point. Here, we reported the observation of the CPGE photocurrent in epitaxial Cd₃As₂ thin films grown on a GaAs(111)B substrate. The signature of the CPGE is confirmed by its sign reversal upon switching the helicity of optical radiation, as well as its dependence on the excitation incident angle and power. By comparison of the CPGE response between the films with different thicknesses, it is suggested that the observed CPGE results from the reduced structure symmetry and substantially modified electronic band structure of the Cd₃As₂ thin film that undergoes large epitaxial strain. Our experimental findings provide a valuable reference for the band engineering and exotic helicity-dependent photocurrent phenomena in DSMs towards their potential opto-spintronic device applications.

Photocurrent-driven transient symmetry breaking in the Weyl semimetal TaAs

Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry changes a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurrent generation. Using second harmonic generation spectroscopy as a sensitive probe of symmetry changes, we observe an ultrafast breaking of time-reversal and spatial symmetries following femtosecond optical excitation in the prototypical type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs. Our results show that optically driven photocurrents can be tailored to explicitly break electronic symmetry in a generic fashion, opening up the possibility of driving phase transitions between symmetry-protected states on ultrafast timescales.

Topology and geometry under the nonlinear electromagnetic spotlight

For many materials, a precise knowledge of their dispersion spectra is insufficient to predict their ordered phases and physical responses. Instead, these materials are classified by the geometrical and topological properties of their wavefunctions. A key challenge is to identify and implement experiments that probe or control these quantum properties. In this Review, we describe recent progress in this direction, focusing on nonlinear electromagnetic responses that arise directly from quantum geometry and topology. We give an overview of the field by discussing theoretical ideas, experiments and the materials that drive them. We conclude by discussing how these techniques can be combined with device architectures to uncover, probe and ultimately control quantum phases with emergent topological and correlated properties.

Direct Measurement of Helicoid Surface States in RhSi Using Nonlinear Optics

Despite the fundamental nature of the edge state in topological physics, direct measurement of electronic and optical properties of the Fermi arcs of topological semimetals has posed a significant experimental challenge, as their response is often overwhelmed by the metallic bulk. However, laser-driven currents carried by surface and bulk states can propagate in different directions in nonsymmorphic crystals, allowing for the two components to be easily separated. Motivated by a recent theoretical prediction G. Chang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 166404 (2020)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.124.166404, we have measured the linear and circular photogalvanic effect currents deriving from the Fermi arcs of the nonsymmorphic, chiral Weyl semimetal RhSi over the 0.45-1.1 eV incident photon energy range. Our data are in good agreement with the predicted spectral shape of the circular photogalvanic effect as a function of photon energy, although the direction of the surface photocurrent departed from the theoretical expectation over the energy range studied. Surface currents arising from the linear photogalvanic effect were observed as well, with the unexpected result that only two of the six allowed tensor element were required to describe the measurements, suggesting an approximate emergent mirror symmetry inconsistent with the space group of the crystal.

A light-induced phononic symmetry switch and giant dissipationless topological photocurrent in ZrTe5

Dissipationless currents from topologically protected states are promising for disorder-tolerant electronics and quantum computation. Here, we photogenerate giant anisotropic terahertz nonlinear currents with vanishing scattering, driven by laser-induced coherent phonons of broken inversion symmetry in a centrosymmetric Dirac material ZrTe₅. Our work suggests that this phononic terahertz symmetry switching leads to formation of Weyl points, whose chirality manifests in a transverse, helicity-dependent current, orthogonal to the dynamical inversion symmetry breaking axis, via circular photogalvanic effect. The temperature-dependent topological photocurrent exhibits several distinct features: Berry curvature dominance, particle-hole reversal near conical points and chirality protection that is responsible for an exceptional ballistic transport length of ~10 μm. These results, together with first-principles modelling, indicate two pairs of Weyl points dynamically created by B_1u phonons of broken inversion symmetry. Such phononic terahertz control breaks ground for coherent manipulation of Weyl nodes and robust quantum transport without application of static electric or magnetic fields.

Giant topological longitudinal circular photo-galvanic effect in the chiral multifold semimetal CoSi

The absence of mirror symmetry, or chirality, is behind striking natural phenomena found in systems as diverse as DNA and crystalline solids. A remarkable example occurs when chiral semimetals with topologically protected band degeneracies are illuminated with circularly polarized light. Under the right conditions, the part of the generated photocurrent that switches sign upon reversal of the light's polarization, known as the circular photo-galvanic effect, is predicted to depend only on fundamental constants. The conditions to observe quantization are non-universal, and depend on material parameters and the incident frequency. In this work, we perform terahertz emission spectroscopy with tunable photon energy from 0.2 -1.1 eV in the chiral topological semimetal CoSi. We identify a large longitudinal photocurrent peaked at 0.4 eV reaching  ~550 μ A/V², which is much larger than the photocurrent in any chiral crystal reported in the literature. Using first-principles calculations we establish that the peak originates only from topological band crossings, reaching 3.3 ± 0.3 in units of the quantization constant. Our calculations indicate that the quantized circular photo-galvanic effect is within reach in CoSi upon doping and increase of the hot-carrier lifetime. The large photo-conductivity suggests that topological semimetals could potentially be used as novel mid-infrared detectors.

Optical signatures of multifold fermions in the chiral topological semimetal CoSi

We report the optical conductivity in high-quality crystals of the chiral topological semimetal CoSi, which hosts exotic quasiparticles known as multifold fermions. We find that the optical response is separated into several distinct regions as a function of frequency, each dominated by different types of quasiparticles. The low-frequency intraband response is captured by a narrow Drude peak from a high-mobility electron pocket of double Weyl quasiparticles, and the temperature dependence of the spectral weight is consistent with its Fermi velocity. By subtracting the low-frequency sharp Drude and phonon peaks at low temperatures, we reveal two intermediate quasilinear interband contributions separated by a kink at 0.2 eV. Using Wannier tight-binding models based on first-principle calculations, we link the optical conductivity above and below 0.2 eV to interband transitions near the double Weyl fermion and a threefold fermion, respectively. We analyze and determine the chemical potential relative to the energy of the threefold fermion, revealing the importance of transitions between a linearly dispersing band and a flat band. More strikingly, below 0.1 eV our data are best explained if spin-orbit coupling is included, suggesting that at these energies, the optical response is governed by transitions between a previously unobserved fourfold spin-3/2 node and a Weyl node. Our comprehensive combined experimental and theoretical study provides a way to resolve different types of multifold fermions in CoSi at different energy. More broadly, our results provide the necessary basis to interpret the burgeoning set of optical and transport experiments in chiral topological semimetals.

Defect tolerant zero-bias topological photocurrent in a ferroelectric semiconductor

Lattice defect is a major cause of energy dissipation in conventional electric current due to the drift and diffusion motions of electrons. Different nature of current emerges when noncentrosymmetric materials are excited by light. This current, called the shift current, originates from the change in the Berry connection of electrons' wave functions during the interband optical transition. Here, we demonstrate the defect tolerance of shift current using single crystals of ferroelectric semiconductor antimony sulfoiodide (SbSI). Although the dark conductance spreads over several orders of magnitude in each crystal due to the difference in the density of defect levels, the observed shift current converges to an identical value. We also reveal that the shift current is scarcely disturbed by the surface defects while they drastically suppress the conventional photocurrent. The defect tolerance is a manifestation of the topological nature of shift current, which will be a crucial advantage in optoelectronic applications.

Helicity-dependent photocurrents in the chiral Weyl semimetal RhSi

Weyl semimetals are crystals in which electron bands cross at isolated points in momentum space. Associated with each crossing point (or Weyl node) is a topological invariant known as the Berry monopole charge. The circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE), whereby circular polarized light generates a helicity-dependent photocurrent, is a notable example of a macroscopic property that emerges directly from the topology of the Weyl semimetal band structure. Recently, it was predicted that the amplitude of the CPGE associated with optical transitions near a Weyl node is proportional to its monopole charge. In chiral Weyl systems, nodes of opposite charge are nondegenerate, opening a window of wavelengths where the CPGE resulting from uncompensated Berry charge can emerge. Here, we report measurements of CPGE in the chiral Weyl semimetal RhSi, revealing a CPGE response in an energy window that closes at 0.65 eV, in agreement with the predictions of density functional theory.

Terahertz time-domain polarimetry (THz-TDP) based on the spinning E-O sampling technique: determination of precision and calibration

We have developed a terahertz time-domain polarimetry (THz-TDP) system by applying frequency modulation to electro-optic sampling detection in a nonlinear crystal. We characterized the precision of this system in determining the polarization angles to be 1.3° for fixed time delay, and 0.5° for complete time-domain waveform. Furthermore, we calculated the Jones matrix of the optical components used for beam propagation to calibrate the induced systematic error. The advantages of employing this calibration approach are demonstrated on a sapphire crystal investigated at different sample test positions in transmission configuration, and using high resistivity Si, AlN and quartz in reflection geometry. The new THz-TDP technique has the advantage of not using any external polarizers, and therefore is not constrained by their optical performance limitations, such as restricted bandwidths and frequency-dependent extinction ratio. Finally, the THz-TDP technique can be easily implemented on existing time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) systems.

Acoustogalvanic Effect in Dirac and Weyl Semimetals

The acoustogalvanic effect is proposed as a nonlinear mechanism to generate a direct electric current by passing acoustic waves in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Unlike the standard acoustoelectric effect, which relies on the sound-induced deformation potential and the corresponding electric field, the acoustogalvanic one originates from the pseudoelectromagnetic fields, which are not subject to screening. The longitudinal acoustogalvanic current scales at least quadratically with the relaxation time, which is in contrast to the photogalvanic current where the scaling is linear. Because of the interplay of pseudoelectric and pseudomagnetic fields, the current could show a nontrivial dependence on the direction of sound wave propagation. Being within the experimental reach, the effect can be utilized to probe dynamical deformations and corresponding pseudoelectromagnetic fields, which are yet to be experimentally observed in Weyl and Dirac semimetals.

Anisotropic Picosecond Spin-Photocurrent from Weyl Semimetal WTe2

The generation and detection of ultrafast spin current, preferably reaching a frequency up to terahertz, is the core of spintronics. Studies have shown that the Weyl semimetal WTe₂ is of great potential in generating spin currents. However, the prior studies have been limited to the static measurements with the in-plane spin orientation. In this work, we demonstrate a picosecond spin-photocurrent in a Td-WTe₂ thin film via a terahertz time domain spectroscopy with a circularly polarized laser excitation. The anisotropic dependence of the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) in the terahertz emission reveals that the picosecond spin-photocurrent is generated along the rotational asymmetry a-axis. Notably, the generated spins are aligned along the out-of-plane direction under the light normally incident to the film surface, which provides an efficient means to manipulate magnetic devices with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. A spin-splitting band induced by intrinsic inversion symmetry breaking enables the manipulation of a spin current by modulating the helicity of the laser excitation. Moreover, CPGE nearly vanishes at a transition temperature of ∼175 K due to the carrier compensation. Our work provides an insight into the dynamic behavior of the anisotropic spin-photocurrent of Td-WTe₂ in terahertz frequencies and shows a great potential for the future development of terahertz-spintronic devices with Weyl semimetals.

Chiral terahertz wave emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs

Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent terahertz emission from Weyl semimetal TaAs, which is demonstrated as a unique broadband source of the chiral terahertz wave. The polarization control of the THz emission is achieved by tuning photoexcitation of ultrafast photocurrents via the photogalvanic effect. In the near-infrared regime, the photon-energy dependent nonthermal current due to the predominant circular photogalvanic effect can be attributed to the radical change of the band velocities when the chiral Weyl fermions are excited during selective optical transitions between the tilted anisotropic Weyl cones and the massive bulk bands. Our findings provide a design concept for creating chiral photon sources using quantum materials and open up new opportunities for developing ultrafast opto-electronics using Weyl physics.

Circular photogalvanic spectroscopy of Rashba splitting in 2D hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite multiple quantum wells

The two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden−Popper organic-inorganic halide perovskites such as (2D)-phenethylammonium lead iodide (2D-PEPI) have layered structure that resembles multiple quantum wells (MQW). The heavy atoms in 2D-PEPI contribute a large spin-orbit coupling that influences the electronic band structure. Upon breaking the inversion symmetry, a spin splitting (‘Rashba splitting’) occurs in the electronic bands. We have studied the spin splitting in 2D-PEPI single crystals using the circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE). We confirm the existence of Rashba splitting at the electronic band extrema of 35±10 meV, and identify the main inversion symmetry breaking direction perpendicular to the MQW planes. The CPGE action spectrum above the bandgap reveals spin-polarized photocurrent generated by ultrafast relaxation of excited photocarriers separated in momentum space. Whereas the helicity dependent photocurrent with below-gap excitation is due to spin-galvanic effect of the ionized spin-polarized excitons, where spin polarization occurs in the spin-split bands due to asymmetric spin-flip.

Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIP) have high potential for spintronics applications. Using the circular photogalvanic effect the authors demonstrate the existence of Rashba-splitting in the continuum bands of a 2D layered HOIP that results from inversion symmetry breaking along the growth direction.

Light-Induced Currents at Domain Walls in Multiferroic BiFeO3

Multiferroic BiFeO₃ (BFO) films with spontaneously formed periodic stripe domains can generate above-gap open circuit voltages under visible light illumination; nevertheless the underlying mechanism behind this intriguing optoelectronic response has not been understood to date. Here, we make contact-free measurements of light-induced currents in epitaxial BFO films via detecting terahertz radiation emanated by these currents, enabling a direct probe of the intrinsic charge separation mechanisms along with quantitative measurements of the current amplitudes and their directions. In the periodic stripe samples, we find that the net photocurrent is dominated by the charge separation across the domain walls, whereas in the monodomain samples the photovoltaic response arises from a bulk shift current associated with the non-centrosymmetry of the crystal. The peak current amplitude driven by the charge separation at the domain walls is found to be 2 orders of magnitude higher than the bulk shift current response, indicating the prominent role of domain walls acting as nanoscale junctions to efficiently separate photogenerated charges in the stripe domain BFO films. These findings show that domain-wall-engineered BFO thin films offer exciting prospects for ferroelectric-based optoelectronics, as well as bias-free strong terahertz emitters.

Strongly Localized ohmic Absorption of Terahertz Radiation in Nanoslot Antennas

Ohmic absorption of light is an indication of a light-matter interaction within metals, where many interesting phenomena and application potentials can be found. To realize the ohmic absorption of light at long wavelengths, where metals are highly reflective, one can use a metamaterial absorber design to concentrate the electromagnetic field within a thin metal film. This concept has enabled thinning of perfect absorbers from a quarter-wave thickness to several tens of nanometers, greatly improving the utility and efficiency of light-metal interactions. Further improvements on the performance are expected if the absorption can be additionally focused laterally, which is a possibility not yet explored. In this study, we report that nanoslot antennas can be a unique ohmic absorber of the low-frequency radiations, where it can incorporate 70% of incident light to ohmic absorption, focused laterally onto 1% of the unit cell area. The inductive field that drives both field enhancement and ohmic absorption is localized within a skin depth distance from the slots with amplitude being as large as 30% of the incident field. Mode-matching calculations and terahertz spectroscopy measurements confirm the inductive and localized nature of the absorption. The strong confinement of the inductive field and of the resulting ohmic absorption is expected to open a new venue in nanocalorimetry, optical nonlinearities of metals, and bolometer applications.
