Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate how migraine impacts the risk for postpartum depression (PPD) in women of reproductive age as well as the effect of comorbidities on this risk. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study in a tertiary neurology center involving 6248 women with migraine and 4154 women without migraine between the ages of 18 and 45 seen from January 1, 2017, to January 30, 2024. The primary outcome was the odds ratio (OR) for PPD in migraine relative to women without migraine. Secondary outcomes included the OR for PPD in women with chronic migraine who also had comorbidities. Results: After adjusting for demographic factors and comorbid conditions, only chronic migraine, with and without aura, was associated with higher OR for PPD; chronic migraine without aura had the highest risk for PPD (OR: 2.13; 95% CI: 1.29 to 3.53, p = 0.003). In patients with chronic migraine, preeclampsia was associated with the largest OR for PPD, followed by depression, gestational diabetes, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Anxiety, advanced maternal age, endometriosis, and post-traumatic stress disorder were not associated with a statistically significant increase in OR for PPD. Conclusions: Chronic migraine, with and without aura, is associated with a higher OR for PPD relative to non-migraine controls. Patients with chronic migraine, preeclampsia, depression, gestational diabetes, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder were also associated with increased risk of PPD. These data support screening patients with both chronic migraine and these comorbidities for PPD with validated screening tools to connect them with optimal resources best.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) have been identified as potential risk factors for various mental health issues, such as suicidal ideation and attempts. However, few studies have examined this association among Bangladeshi university students. This study aimed to examine the potential associations between PMDD and its co-existence with depression, anxiety, stress, and various suicidal behaviors, including suicidal ideation and attempts. METHODS A cross-sectional survey involving 516 university students was conducted between September and October 2023. The survey was carried out in person and employed a structured questionnaire that comprised demographic information; the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21); and the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool (PSST), a 19-item screening tool for premenstrual symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between variables. RESULTS In the present study, participants with PMDD reported a prevalence of 38.8% for past-year suicidal ideation and 28.6% for suicide attempts. Through logistic regression analysis, we found a significant association between moderate/severe PMS and PMDD and a higher likelihoods of reporting suicidal ideation (AOR = 4.73; 95% CI 2.08-10.73 and AOR = 5.42; 95% CI 2.02-10.52) and suicide attempts (AOR = 3.77; 95% CI 1.36-10.50 and AOR = 4.07; 95% CI 1.22-15.56). The association between suicidal behaviors and PMS/PMDD was mediated by co-existing conditions such as depression, anxiety, and stress. CONCLUSIONS A notable proportion of individuals diagnosed with PMDD reported experiencing suicidal ideation or engaging in suicide attempts at some point in their lives. The findings of this research support the importance of conducting regular assessments of suicidal risk among women experiencing moderate to severe premenstrual disturbance. Furthermore, it is crucial to integrate mental health screenings and implement psychosocial interventions specifically designed for women diagnosed with PMS or PMDD and those with co-existing depression, anxiety, and stress alongside PMS/PMDD.

Abstract
The first 4-6 weeks after childbirth are defined as the onset time for postpartum depression (PPD). Despite this known time frame there are significant gaps in the identification and treatment of PPD. The risk for postpartum depression (RiPoD) study investigated specific risk factors and predictors of postpartum psychological adjustment processes and the results are presented within the framework of a state of the art review of research. The dynamic neuroplastic changes in the maternal brain during pregnancy and the postpartum period appear to be closely linked to peripartum hormone fluctuations, which jointly influence the development of postpartum mood disorders. Hormonal risk factors such as baby blues and premenstrual syndrome have been found to have a bearing on PPD. The combination of these two factors predicts the risk of PPD with 83% sensitivity within the first week postpartum. Follow-up digital monitoring of symptom development in the first 6 weeks postpartum has enabled an accurate identification of women with PPD. Understanding the interaction between hormone fluctuations, neuroplasticity and psychiatric disorders should be an important target for future research. Early identification and diagnosis of PPD can be easily integrated into the clinical routine and everyday life.

Abstract
Females diagnosed with Menstrually-related mood disorders (MRMDs) have more risk to develop postpartum depression (PPD). There are overlapping symptoms between MRMDs and PPD such as anxiety, depressed mood, irritability, that can contribute to a lower quality of life. MRMDs and PPD share components in their etiology such as dramatic hormonal oscillations, and alterations in Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis activity that may impair GABAergic neurotransmission. As well, stressful events that impact HPA regulation may play an important role in the etiology of MRMDs and PPD. Here we review common hormone fluctuations across the menstrual cycle and pregnancy/postpartum to identify shared pathways that could contribute to greater sensitivity in people with MRMDs and PPD. This review summarizes hormone sensitivity, HPA axis activity and neurosteroids effects on GABAergic transmission and the potential role of chronic stress in developing MRMDs and PPD. In addition, other potential etiopathological factors, such as serotonin and the immune system, are discussed. Investigating the etiopathology of MRMDs and PDD will help to better understand the complexity of factors involved in these disorders that affect females across the reproductive years.

Abstract
In this study, we aimed to determine the association of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) with maternal antenatal depression. This cross-sectional, online questionnaire-based observational study included 212 pregnant women between gestational ages 24 weeks and 28 weeks 6 days. PMS and PMDD were measured using the PMDD Scale, and maternal antenatal depression was evaluated using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. Baseline characteristics, clinical information, and associated factors were also included in the questionnaire. Analyses were conducted using a binomial logistic regression model with Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale positivity (maternal antenatal depression) as the dependent variable. Having "PMDD" (odds ratio: 3.54 [95% confidence interval: 1.26-9.93], p = 0.02) and "PMS" (odds ratio 2.31 [1.10-4.87], p = 0.03) on the PMDD rating scale were significantly associated with maternal antenatal depression. Therefore, our results suggest that screening for a history of PMS or PMDD during the early antepartum interview may aid mental health care and prevent perinatal depression during the early stages of pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In population-based research, pregnancy may be a repeated event. Despite published guidance on how to address repeated pregnancies to the same individual, a variety of approaches are observed in perinatal epidemiological studies. While some of these approaches are supported by the chosen research question, others are consequences of constraints inherent to a given dataset (eg, missing parity information). These decisions determine how appropriately a given research question can be answered and overall generalizability. OBJECTIVE To compare common cohort selection and analytic approaches used for perinatal epidemiological research by assessing the prevalence of two perinatal outcomes and their association with a clinical and a social independent variable. STUDY DESIGN Using vital records linked to maternal hospital discharge records for singleton births, we created four cohorts: (1) all-births (2) randomly selected one birth per individual (3) first-observed birth per individual (4) primiparous-births (parity 1). Sampling of births was not conditional on cluster (ie, we did not sample all births by a given mother, but rather sampled individual births). Study outcomes were severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and preeclampsia/eclampsia, and the independent variables were self-reported race/ethnicity (as a social factor) and systemic lupus erythematosus. Comparing the four cohorts, we assessed the distribution of maternal characteristics, the prevalence of outcomes, overall and stratified by parity, and risk ratios (RR) for the associations of outcomes with independent variables. Among all-births, we then compared RR from three analytic strategies: with standard inference that assumes independently sampled births to the same mother in the model, with cluster-robust inference, and adjusting for parity. RESULTS We observed minor differences in the population characteristics between the all-birth (N=2736,693), random-selection, and first-observed birth cohorts (both N=2284,660), with more substantial differences between these cohorts and the primiparous-births cohort (N=1054,684). Outcome prevalence was consistently lowest among all-births and highest among primiparous-births (eg, SMM 18.9 per 1000 births among primiparous-births vs 16.6 per 1000 births among all-births). When stratified by parity, outcome prevalence was always the lowest in births of parity 2 and highest among births of parity 1 for both outcomes. RR differed for study outcomes across all four cohorts, with the most pronounced differences between the primiparous-birth cohort and other cohorts. Among all-births, robust inference minimally impacted the confidence bounds of estimates, compared to the standard inference, that is, crude estimates (eg, lupus-SMM association: 4.01, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 3.54-4.55 vs 4.01, 95% CI 3.53-4.56 for crude estimate), while adjusting for parity slightly shifted estimates, toward the null for SMM and away from the null for preeclampsia/eclampsia. CONCLUSION Researchers should consider the alignment between the methods they use, their sampling strategy, and their research question. This could include refining the research question to better match inference possible for available data, considering alternative data sources, and appropriately noting data limitations and resulting bias, as well as the generalizability of findings. If parity is an established effect modifier, stratified results should be presented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postpartum depression and anxiety are major public health concerns that affect 3-39% of women after childbearing and can adversely affect maternal and child health. Most studies have investigated postpartum depression and anxiety and their associated factors among women 4-12 weeks after delivery. There is a scarcity of research among women immediately after delivery from low- and middle-income countries, the gap this study aimed to fill. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 386 postpartum women within one week after delivery. The Edinburg Postnatal Depression Scale was used to assess depressive symptoms and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder - 7 scale was used to screen for symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Participants were systematically selected from the postnatal wards and interviewed by trained research assistants from November 2019 to March 2020. RESULTS Using standard cut points, the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 25.39%, and 37.31% respectively. Having a baby with a weight of 2.5 kgs or more and having partner support were associated with decreased odds of both depression and anxiety symptoms. In contrast, complications during delivery, caesarian section, marital status, and partner violence, were associated with increased odds of depressive and anxiety symptoms post-delivery. CONCLUSION There was a high prevalence of postpartum depression and anxiety symptoms among the study participants in the first week post-delivery, with delivery complications and outcome and psychosocial supports identified as associated factors for depression and anxiety symptoms. These findings highlight the need for early screening to identify those at risk for appropriate intervention.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION What is the burden of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) at the global, regional, and national levels across 21 regions and 204 countries and territories? SUMMARY ANSWER Over the past few decades, the global prevalent cases of PMS have grown significantly from 652.5 million in 1990 to 956.0 million in 2019, representing a 46.5% increase. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY PMS, which affects almost half of reproductive women worldwide, has substantial social, occupational, academic, and psychological effects on women's lives. However, no comprehensive and detailed epidemiological estimates of PMS by age and socio-demographic index (SDI) at global, regional, and national levels have been reported. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION An age- and SDI-stratified systematic analysis of the prevalence and years lived with disability (YLD) of PMS by age and SDI across 21 regions and 204 countries and territories has been performed. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS The prevalence and YLD of PMS from 1990 to 2019 were retrieved directly from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) 2019 study. The number, rates per 100 000 persons, and average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) of prevalence and YLD were estimated at the global, regional, and national levels. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Globally, the prevalent cases of PMS increased by 46.5% from 652.5 million in 1990 to 956.0 million in 2019; in contrast, however, the age-standardized prevalence rate was approximately stable at 24 431.15/100 000 persons in 1990 and 24 406.51/100 000 persons in 2019 (AAPC, 0[95% CI: -0.01 to 0.01]). Globally, the YLD was 8.0 million in 2019 and 5.4 million in 1990, with a sizable increase over the past 30 years. The age-standardized YLD rate was stable (AAPC 0.01, P = 0.182), at 203.45/100 000 persons in 1990 and 203.76/100 000 persons in 2019. The age-standardized burden estimates were the highest in the low-middle SDI regions and the lowest in the high SDI regions. Peaks in burden rate estimates were all observed in the 40-44 years age group. Regional age-standardized burden estimates were the highest in South Asia and the lowest in Western Sub-Saharan Africa. The national age-standardized burden estimates were the highest in Pakistan and the lowest in Niger. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The accuracy of the results depended on the quality and quantity of the GBD 2019 data. Fortunately, the GBD study endeavoured to retrieve data globally and applied multiple models to optimize the completeness, accuracy, and reliability of the data. In addition, the GBD study took the country as its basic unit and neglected the influence of race. Further study is warranted to compare differences in PMS burden associated with race. Finally, no data are available on the aetiology and risk information related to PMS, which might help us to better understand the trends and age distribution of PMS and help local governments formulate more detailed policies and comprehensive interventions. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Although the age-standardized prevalence/YLD rate has been stable over the past 30 years, the absolute number of prevalent cases and YLD grew significantly worldwide from 1990 to 2019. Public health-related policies should be implemented to reduce the prevalence and alleviate the symptoms of PMS. Lifestyle changes and cognitive-behavioral therapy are critical in helping to reduce the burden of PMS. Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual disorders (PMDs) and perinatal depression (PND) share symptomology and the timing of symptoms of both conditions coincide with natural hormonal fluctuations, which may indicate a shared etiology. Yet, there is a notable absence of prospective data on the potential bidirectional association between these conditions, which is crucial for guiding clinical management. Using the Swedish nationwide registers with prospectively collected data, we aimed to investigate the bidirectional association between PMDs and PND. METHODS AND FINDINGS With 1,803,309 singleton pregnancies of 1,041,419 women recorded in the Swedish Medical Birth Register during 2001 to 2018, we conducted a nested case-control study to examine the risk of PND following PMDs, which is equivalent to a cohort study, and transitioned that design into a matched cohort study with onward follow-up to simulate a prospective study design and examine the risk of PMDs after PND (within the same study population). Incident PND and PMDs were identified through clinical diagnoses or prescribed medications. We randomly selected 10 pregnant women without PND, individually matched to each PND case on maternal age and calendar year using incidence density sampling (N: 84,949: 849,482). We (1) calculated odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of PMDs using conditional logistic regression in the nested case-control study. Demographic factors (country of birth, educational level, region of residency, and cohabitation status) were adjusted for. We (2) calculated the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CIs of PMDs subsequent to PND using stratified Cox regression in the matched cohort study. Smoking, BMI, parity, and history of psychiatric disorders were further controlled for, in addition to demographic factors. Pregnancies from full sisters of PND cases were identified for sibling comparison, which contrasts the risk within each set of full sisters discordant on PND. In the nested case-control study, we identified 2,488 PMDs (2.9%) before pregnancy among women with PND and 5,199 (0.6%) among controls. PMDs were associated with a higher risk of subsequent PND (OR 4.76, 95% CI [4.52,5.01]; p < 0.001). In the matched cohort with a mean follow-up of 7.40 years, we identified 4,227 newly diagnosed PMDs among women with PND (incidence rate (IR) 7.6/1,000 person-years) and 21,326 among controls (IR 3.8). Compared to their matched controls, women with PND were at higher risk of subsequent PMDs (HR 1.81, 95% CI [1.74,1.88]; p < 0.001). The bidirectional association was noted for both prenatal and postnatal depression and was stronger among women without history of psychiatric disorders (p for interaction < 0.001). Sibling comparison showed somewhat attenuated, yet statistically significant, bidirectional associations. The main limitation of this study was that our findings, based on clinical diagnoses recorded in registers, may not generalize well to women with mild PMDs or PND. CONCLUSIONS In this study, we observed a bidirectional association between PMDs and PND. These findings suggest that a history of PMDs can inform PND susceptibility and vice versa and lend support to the shared etiology between both disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aetiology and consequences of 'baby blues' (lower mood following childbirth) are yet to be sufficiently investigated with respect to an individual's clinical history. AIMS The primary aim of the study was to assess the symptoms of baby blues and the relevant risk factors, their associations with clinical history and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and their possible contribution to the early recognition of postpartum depression (PPD). METHOD Beginning shortly after childbirth, 369 mothers were followed up for 12 weeks. Information related to their clinical history, PMS, depression, stress and mother-child attachment was collected. At 12 weeks, mothers were classified as non-depressed, or with either PPD or adjustment disorder. RESULTS A correlation was found between the severity of baby blues and PMS (r = 0.397, P < 0.001), with both conditions increasing the possibility of adjustment disorder and PPD (baby blues: OR = 6.72, 95% CI 3.69-12.25; PMS: OR = 3.29, 95% CI 2.01-5.39). Baby blues and PMS independently predicted whether a mother would develop adjustment disorder or PPD after childbirth (χ2(64) = 198.16, P < 0.001). Among the non-depressed participants, baby blues were found to be associated with primiparity (P = 0.012), family psychiatric history (P = 0.001), PMS (P < 0.001) and childhood trauma (P = 0.017). CONCLUSIONS Baby blues are linked to a number of risk factors and a history of PMS, with both conditions adding to the risk of PPD. The neuroendocrine effects on mood need be understood in the context of individual risk factors. The assessment of both baby blues and PMS symptoms within the first postpartum days may contribute to an early identification of PPD.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between pre-pregnancy premenstrual syndrome (PMS) history with postpartum depression and mother-infant bonding. DESIGN AND METHODS The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study included 322 mothers. Data were collected using the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale (PMSS), Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and Brockington Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (BPBQ). FINDINGS There were positive statistically significant correlations between PMSS total and subscale scores and EPDS scores and BPBQ. In addition, there were statistically significant positive correlations between EPDS score scores and BPBQ. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE Especially by achieving success in PMS management in the pre-pregnancy period, the risk of postpartum depression development can be prevented, and healthy development of mother-infant bonding can be achieved.

Abstract
Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) affects 1.2 to 5% of women of reproductive age. Besides significant suffering and social, occupational, and interpersonal impairment, it has been suggested that this syndrome is associated with other affective disorders, in different reproductive phases, such as pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, the literature on this association is scarce and presents great variability in terms of adopted methodology and mixed results. To analyze the relationship between PMDD and other affective disorders, aiming to contribute to the clarification of whether PMDD can be considered a risk factor for perinatal depression (PND). Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO databases. Seven original studies were included. Only one study linked PMDD with depression during pregnancy, with evidence of a positive association between PMDD and PND. This and five other studies show a positive relationship between PMDD and postpartum depression (PPD), assessed in periods ranging from 2 to 4 days to 1 year after birth. Only one study found no significant association between PMDD and PPD, assessed at 4 weeks postpartum. There seems to be a positive and significant association between PMDD and the development of perinatal depression, particularly postpartum depression. This review supports the relevance of health professionals systematically evaluating the presence of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, when monitoring women throughout the perinatal period.

Abstract
Premenstrual symptoms, including physical and mood symptoms, affect a large proportion of women worldwide. Data on premenstrual symptoms across nations and age groups is limited. In the present study, we leveraged a large international dataset to explore patterns in premenstrual symptom frequency with age. A survey was administered to users of the Flo mobile application (app), aged 18 to 55. The survey queried app users about a range of premenstrual symptoms. Respondents were asked whether they experienced each symptom every menstrual cycle, some cycles, or never. Age was also captured and categorized as 18-27, 28-37, 38-47, 48-55. Data was summarized and Pearson's chi square test for count data assessed differences in symptom frequency by age group. A sample of 238,114 app users from 140 countries responded to the survey. The most common symptoms reported were food cravings (85.28%), mood swings or anxiety (64.18%), and fatigue (57.3%). Absentmindedness, low libido, sleep changes, gastrointestinal symptoms, weight gain, headaches, sweating or hot flashes, fatigue, hair changes, rashes, and swelling were significantly more frequent with increasing age (p's < 0.001). Mood swings and anxiety did not vary by age group. Of the respondents, 28.61% reported that premenstrual symptoms interfered with their everyday life each menstrual cycle. In a large international sample, the majority of women reported premenstrual food cravings, mood changes, and fatigue every menstrual cycle. Mood symptoms did not vary by age group, suggesting that premenstrual mood changes are a persistent issue among women of reproductive age.

Abstract
Background Utilization of Thai traditional medicine (TTM) was considered in menstrual-cycle-related signs and symptoms (MCSs) to evaluate women's health. TTM clinicians diagnosed the MCSs by signs, symptoms, and associated factors of patients including a physical examination to find patterns of imbalance elements and the origin of the disorder to optimize treatment. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a new assessment tool, the menstrual-cycle-related signs and symptoms questionnaire (MCSQ) based on TTM principles for evaluation of women's menstrual health. Methods The items and components of the MCSQ were adjusted by TTM expert consensus using the Delphi technique. The content validity of the MCSQ was quantified by the content validity index (CVI). MCSQ were examined by construct validity and internal consistency reliability using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Cronbach's α coefficient, respectively. Results : All 19 experts (100%) responded to the questionnaires in the three rounds of the Delphi technique. The MCSQ showed high content validity of individual items (I-CVI = 0.83-1.00) and high overall content validity of the questionnaire (S-CVI/AVE = 0.98). Overall, 429 of 432 participants completed the questionnaire (99.31%). After factor analysis, the final MCSQ was divided into two sections, which consisted of 49 items. The first had 23 items focusing on the MCSs. And, the second had 14 items of personal and medical data including 12 items of associated factors. Cronbach's α coefficient of the final MCSQ was 0.87, and that of each component was between 0.32 and 0.82. Conclusions This study reports a new MCS questionnaire tool, which was developed from TTM knowledge to evaluate women's health. This questionnaire showed an acceptable level of validity and reliability. Thus, it is also expected to be useful in clinical practice and ongoing research on evaluation of women's health.

Abstract
Background: The global incidence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is increasing, with increasing suicide reports. However, the bibliometric analysis of global research on PMS and PMDD is rare. We aimed to evaluate the global scientific output of research on PMS and PMDD and to explore their research hotspots and frontiers from 1945 to 2018 using a bibliometric analysis methodology. Methods: Articles with research on PMS and PMDD between 1945 and 2018 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We used the bibliometric method, CiteSpace V and VOSviewer to analyze publication years, journals, countries, institutions, authors, research hotspots, and trends. We plotted the reference co-citation network, and we used keywords to analyze the research hotspots and trends. Results: We identified 2,833 publications on PMS and PMDD research from 1945 to 2018, and the annual publication number increased with time, with fluctuations. Psychoneuroendocrinology published the highest number of articles. The USA ranked the highest among the countries with the most publications, and the leading institute was UNIV PENN. Keyword and reference analysis indicated that the menstrual cycle, depression and ovarian hormones were the research hotspots, whereas prevalence, systematic review, anxiety and depression and young women were the research frontiers. Conclusions: We depicted overall research on PMS and PMDD by a bibliometric analysis methodology. Prevalence and impact in young women, systematic review evaluations of risk factors, and the association of anxiety and depression with menstrual cycle phases are the latest research frontiers that will pioneer the direction of research in the next few years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous literature suggests a positive association between history of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and development of postpartum depression (PPD); however, limited evidence has come from prospective population-based studies and whether history of depression affects this association is unknown. METHODS This study included 5479 women from the 1973-78 cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health and estimated the association between pre-pregnancy PMS and PPD. Participants were followed from 22-27 years in 2000 to 37-42 years in 2015. PMS was collected from a 4-category Likert-scale reporting on frequency of PMS in the last 12 months (never, rarely, sometimes, or often) at the survey preceding an index birth. PPD was ascertained from reports of doctor diagnoses for each birth. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to estimate the association of interest. The role of history of depression was assessed by testing its interaction with pre-pregnancy PMS. RESULTS During 15 years' follow-up, 15.4% of participating women reported PPD; and 55.1% reported PMS (rarely: 17.2%, sometimes: 25.7%, and often: 12.2%). Compared to women who had no PMS before pregnancy, those who rarely had PMS had similar risk of PPD (1.03, 0.82-1.30); whereas those who sometimes or often had PMS had significantly higher risk of PPD (1.31, 1.09-1.57 and 1.51, 1.22-1.87, respectively). History of depression did not affect the association. LIMITATIONS PMS was self-reported. PMS severity was not collected. CONCLUSIONS This large population-based study provides evidence of a dose-response relationship between PMS prior to pregnancy and PPD, independent of history of depression. Evidence to date suggests PMS has the potential to help identify women at increased risk of PPD before pregnancy.

Abstract
The peripartum period offers a unique opportunity to improve our understanding of how dramatic fluctuations in endogenous ovarian hormones affect the human brain and behavior. This notwithstanding, peripartum depression remains an underdiagnosed and undertreated disorder. Here, we review recent neuroimaging findings with respect to the neuroplastic changes in the maternal brain during pregnancy and the postpartum period. We seek to provide an overview of multimodal neuroimaging designs of current peripartum depression models of hormone withdrawal, changes in monoaminergic signaling, and maladaptive neuroplasticity, which likely lead to the development of a condition that puts the lives of mother and infant at risk. We discuss the need to effectively integrate the available information on psychosocial and neurobiological risk factors contributing to individual vulnerability. Finally, we propose a systematic approach to neuroimaging the peripartum brain that acknowledges important co-morbidities and variation in disease onset.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is thought to be a risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD), but results from studies examining the association have been mixed. OBJECTIVES To estimate the association between pre-pregnancy history of PMS and development of PPD and evaluate the risk of bias of included evidence. SEARCH STRATEGY PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang Data, and reference lists of relevant papers were searched. SELECTION CRITERIA Observational studies that collected pre-pregnancy history of PMS and measured PPD status between one week and one year after delivery were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Random-effect models were used to calculate pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Small study effect was analysed by funnel plot. Risk of bias was assessed using the Risk of Bias Instrument for Non-Randomized Studies of Exposures (ROBINS-E). MAIN RESULTS Our meta-analysis included 19 studies. Overall, women with a pre-pregnancy history of PMS had more than double the odds of PPD compared to those without PMS (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.81-2.68). However, the quality of evidence was low: five studies had moderate risk, eleven studies had serious risk, and three studies had critical risk of bias. CONCLUSIONS Current evidence supports a significant association between history of PMS and development of PPD. Well-designed prospective studies are needed to further investigate this relationship.

Abstract
Resumo: Esta investigação teve por objetivos gerais: a) identificar fatores de risco e de proteção associados à Depressão Pós-Parto (DPP); e b) avaliar a contribuição do Pré-Natal Psicológico (PNP) como programa de prevenção em Saúde da Mulher. Para tanto, empreendeu-se uma pesquisa-ação organizada em três fases, reunindo um total de 198 gestantes. Na última fase, as participantes foram distribuídas em Grupo Intervenção – GI (n = 47) e Grupo Controle – GC (n = 29). Para coleta de dados, utilizaram-se: Questionário Gestacional, BAI, BDI-II e EPDS. Os dados foram submetidos a análises estatísticas descritivas e comparativas. Não foi possível relacionar variáveis socioeconômicas, participação no PNP e desejo de gravidez com maior risco de DPP. Em contrapartida, verificou-se tal associação quanto a gravidez não planejada e a falta de apoio do pai do bebê. Contrariamente ao GC, não se constatou associação entre ansiedade e depressão gestacionais com a DPP no GI. Nesse grupo, 10,64% das puérperas revelaram tendência para DPP, ao passo que, em GC, 44,83% mostraram tal propensão. Em suma, considera-se que o PNP, somado a fatores de proteção, constitui ação preventiva a ser desenvolvida pelo profissional de Psicologia no contexto do acompanhamento pré e pós-natal.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postpartum depression (PPD) poses a major global public health challenge. PPD is the most common complication associated with childbirth and exerts harmful effects on children. Although hundreds of PPD studies have been published, we lack accurate global or national PPD prevalence estimates and have no clear account of why PPD appears to vary so dramatically between nations. Accordingly, we conducted a meta-analysis to estimate the global and national prevalence of PPD and a meta-regression to identify economic, health, social, or policy factors associated with national PPD prevalence. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of all papers reporting PPD prevalence using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. PPD prevalence and methods were extracted from each study. Random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate global and national PPD prevalence. To test for country level predictors, we drew on data from UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank. Random effects meta-regression was used to test national predictors of PPD prevalence. FINDINGS 291 studies of 296284 women from 56 countries were identified. The global pooled prevalence of PPD was 17.7% (95% confidence interval: 16.6-18.8%), with significant heterogeneity across nations (Q = 16,823, p = 0.000, I2 = 98%), ranging from 3% (2-5%) in Singapore to 38% (35-41%) in Chile. Nations with significantly higher rates of income inequality (R2 = 41%), maternal mortality (R2 = 19%), infant mortality (R2 = 16%), or women of childbearing age working ≥40 h a week (R2 = 31%) have higher rates of PPD. Together, these factors explain 73% of the national variation in PPD prevalence. INTERPRETATION The global prevalence of PPD is greater than previously thought and varies dramatically by nation. Disparities in wealth inequality and maternal-child-health factors explain much of the national variation in PPD prevalence.

Abstract
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and related disorders, and postpartum depression (PPD) can affect women to the extent that their quality of life and that of their near ones can be severely impaired. This review focuses on the different theories regarding the etiologies of PMS and PPD, and attempts to draw a link between the two. Theories focus mainly on hormonal and cytokine factors throughout different phases in the female reproductive cycle. Changes in this symptomatology during pregnancy are also reviewed, as are changes in hormones and cytokine levels. Hypotheses are thus developed as to why the symptoms experienced in PMS often subside during pregnancy yet may recur and be exacerbated after birth, giving rise to the symptoms experienced in PPD.

AbstractBackgroundPostpartum depression (PPD) is a common disorder after childbirth. The strongest known predictors are a history of depression and/or a history of PPD. However, for a significant proportion of women, PPD constitutes their first depressive episode. This study aimed to gain further insight into the risk factors for PPD in first time mothers without previous psychiatric contact.MethodsWomen delivering in Uppsala University Hospital, Sweden, from May 2006 to June 2007, were asked to participate and filled out questionnaires five days and six weeks postpartum, containing inter alia the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Univariate logistic regression models, as well as a path analysis, were performed to unveil the complex interplay between the study variables.ResultsOf the 653 participating primiparas, 10.3% and 6.4% reported depressive symptoms (EPDS ≥ 12 points) five days and six weeks postpartum, respectively. In the path analysis, a positive association between anxiety proneness and depressive symptoms at five days and six weeks postpartum was identified. For depressive symptoms six weeks after delivery, additional risk factors were detected, namely depressive symptoms five days postpartum and subjective experience of problems with the baby. Caesarean section and assisted vaginal delivery were associated with fewer depressive symptoms at 6 six weeks postpartum.ConclusionsIdentification of anxiety proneness, delivery mode and problems with the baby as risk factors for self-reported depressive symptoms postpartum in this group of primiparas can be important in helping health care professionals identify women at increased risk of affective disorders in the perinatal period, and provide a base for early intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to identify premenstrual symptom clusters; and to explore the differences in and effectiveness of coping strategies among symptom cluster groups. METHODS Using the happy healthy 20s smartphone application, 349 women with premenstrual symptoms participated in the study. Premenstrual symptoms and health outcomes such as perceived health, depressive feelings, quality of life, suicidal ideation/attempts and coping strategies were explored. Factor analysis and silhouette analysis were used to identify premenstrual symptom clusters. Analysis of variance was used to explore the differences among symptom clusters in health outcomes and coping strategies. RESULTS Three premenstrual symptom clusters were identified: general discomfort, negative affect and turmoil. Three symptom cluster groups experienced different health outcomes in perceived health, depressive feelings, quality of life and suicidal ideation. However, few differences were noted in participants' engagement in coping strategies, frequencies and perceived effectiveness among women with different symptom clusters. DISCUSSION Findings of this study support previous reports that women do not receive tailored care for their premenstrual symptoms. Learning about the symptom structure, women's ways of coping, and perceived effectiveness is important in identifying the issues in current premenstrual symptoms management and providing tailored care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of clinical depression that can affect women after childbirth. Few previous studies have explored the association of depressive and physical symptoms among women with PPD in a nationwide community study. METHOD A total of 18,807 adults, randomly selected, completed a face-to-face interview using the Korean version of Composite International Diagnostic Interview (K-CIDI) (response rate 80.2%). PPD was defined as a major depressive episode that began within 4 weeks after delivery. RESULTS Of 679 female subjects with major depressive disorder (MDD), 14.0% (n=95) experienced PPD. Subjects with PPD were significantly more likely to have higher income, education, and reside in an urban area, compared to those with non-PPD. No significant differences were found in number of children. Multiple logistic regression revealed that the loss of sexual interest was the only symptom among 23 depressive symptoms that was significantly associated with depressive episodes among individuals with PPD (AOR=1.91, 95% CI 1.01-3.60) when compared with non-PPD. Loss of sexual interest was also significantly associated with the subjects with lifetime PPD regardless of depressive episode (AOR=1.93, 95% CI 1.12-3.31). Conversely, loss of confidence and loss of pleasure were less frequent in subjects with PPD. Premenstrual mood change (χ(2)=5.57, p=0.0036) and comorbid alcohol use disorder (χ(2)=5.11, p=0.031) showed a valid association with PPD. CONCLUSIONS Loss of sexual interest and premenstrual mood change were associated with women with PPD, whereas those with non-PPD were not, thereby suggesting the possible link between sexual hormones and PPD.

Abstract
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common childbirth complication, affecting 10-15 % of newly delivered mothers. This study aims to assess the association between personality factors and PPD. All pregnant women during the period September 2009 to September 2010, undergoing a routine ultrasound at Uppsala University Hospital, were invited to participate in the BASIC study, a prospective study designed to investigate maternal well-being. Depressive symptoms were assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) while the Depression Self-Rating Scale (DSRS) was used as a diagnostic tool for major depression. Personality traits were evaluated using the Swedish Universities Scale of Personality (SSP). One thousand thirty-seven non-depressed pregnant women were included in the study. Non-depressed women reporting high levels of neuroticism in late pregnancy were at high risk of developing postpartum depressive symptoms (PPDSs) at 6 weeks and 6 months after delivery, even after adjustment for confounders (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.4, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 1.8-6.5 and adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.9, 95 % CI 1.9-7.9). The same was true for a DSRS-based diagnosis of major depression at 6 months postpartum. Somatic trait anxiety and psychic trait anxiety were associated with increased risk for PPDS at 6 weeks (aOR = 2.1, 95 % CI 1.2-3.5 and aOR = 1.9, 95 % CI 1.1-3.1), while high scores of mistrust were associated with a twofold increased risk for PPDS at 6 months postpartum (aOR 1.9, 95 % CI 1.1-3.4). Non-depressed pregnant women with high neuroticism scores have an almost fourfold increased risk to develop depressive symptoms postpartum, and the association remains robust even after controlling for most known confounders. Clinically, this could be of importance for health care professionals working with pregnant and newly delivered women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of postpartum depression worldwide varies from 0.5% to 60.8% in the first 12 months postpartum using self-reported questionnaire. This review aims to update the current magnitude of postpartum depression based on self-reported questionnaire and clinical interview and explore its associated factors in developed and developing countries. METHODS A literature search conducted between 2005 and 2014 identified 203 studies, of which 191 used self-reported questionnaire in 42 countries and 21 used structured clinical interview in 15 countries. Nine studies used a combination of self-reported questionnaire and clinical interview. RESULT The prevalence of postpartum depression varies from 1.9% to 82.1% in developing countries and from 5.2% to 74.0% in developed countries using self-reported questionnaire. Structured clinical interview shows a much lower prevalence range from 0.1% in Finland to 26.3% in India. Antenatal depression and anxiety, previous psychiatric illness, poor marital relationship, stressful life events, negative attitude towards pregnancy, and lack of social support are significant contributors to postpartum depression. LIMITATION All studies are included irrespective of the methodological quality, such as small sample size and their inclusion could affect the generalizability of the results. CONCLUSION The current prevalence of postpartum depression is much higher than that previously reported, and similar risk factors are documented. A culturally sensitive cut-off score with adequate psychometric properties of the screening instruments should be available. In future studies, examining the physical, biological, and cultural factors in qualitative studies and in those with adequate methodological qualities is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premenstrual syndrome (PMS), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and depressive disorder are fairly common; symptoms do overlap, often under-identified and under-emphasized, particularly in rural India. OBJECTIVE The objective was to assess the occurrence of PMS and PMDD in a sample of students and staff of a nursing college and to find their correlation with depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS A prospective cohort study; Tertiary Care Hospital in Rural India (Wardha, Maharashtra); 118 female nursing students or staff aged between 18 and 40 years, who were likely to stay within the institution for the study period. The participants were rated on Penn daily symptom report prospectively for a period of 3-month. Those who scored positive were applied diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 4(th) edition, text revision (DSM-IV TR) criteria for PMDD; and were applied primary care evaluation of mental disorders depression screening followed by DSM-IV TR criteria for depression. Severity of depression was measured using Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. RESULTS Main outcome measures were frequency and severity of depression in individuals with PMS and PMDD and their clinical and sociodemographic correlation. The age range of the sample was 18-37 years. Some PMS symptoms were observed in 67%; diagnosis of PMDD in 10%; depressive symptoms in 28% of the sample. 46.4% of those with depressive symptoms had major depression. The diagnosis of major depression was significantly associated with the severity of PMS symptoms as well as the presence of PMDD. CONCLUSION Premenstrual syndrome is present in a substantial proportion of young females. Concurrent depression is increased by the severity of PMS symptoms and the presence of PMDD. Gynecologist needs to screen such subjects for depression and refer to mental-health professional early, in routine clinical practice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of healthcare professionals' use of the hands-on approach during the first breastfeeding session postpartum and its possible association with the mothers' experience of their first breastfeeding session. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a population-based longitudinal study conducted at Uppsala University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden, of all women giving birth at the hospital from May 2006 to June 2007. Six months postpartum, a questionnaire including questions regarding breastfeeding support, caregiving routines, depressive symptoms, and the woman's experience of the first breastfeeding session was sent to the mothers. The main outcome measures were use of the hands-on approach during the first breastfeeding session and the mother's experience of the breastfeeding session. RESULTS In total, 879 women participated in the study. Thirty-eight percent of the women received the hands-on approach during the first breastfeeding session. High body mass index, primiparity, and having the first breastfeeding session postponed were all independently associated with the hands-on approach. Women who received the hands-on approach were more likely to report a negative experience of the first breastfeeding session (odds ratio=4.48; 95% confidence interval, 2.57-7.82), even after adjustment for possible confounders (odds ratio=2.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.02-5.50). CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that the hands-on approach is commonly used during the first breastfeeding session and is associated with a more negative experience of the first breastfeeding session. Consequently, caregivers need to question the use of this method, and further research about breastfeeding support is required.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to investigate whether there was a correlation between catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) gene polymorphism, which is believed to play a role in the etiology of psychotic disorders, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Methods Fifty-three women with regular menstrual cycles, aged between 18 and 46 years and diagnosed with PMS according to the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology criteria were included in this study as the study group, and 53 healthy women having no health problems were selected as the controls. Venous blood was collected from all patients included in the study and kept at -18℃ prior to analysis. Results There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of demographic features such as age, body mass index, number of pregnancies, parity, and number of children. No statistically significant difference was observed in terms of COMT gene polymorphism (p=0.61) between women in the PMS and the control groups. However, a significant difference was found between arthralgia, which is an indicator of PMS, and low-enzyme activity COMT gene (Met/Met) polymorphism (p=0.04). Conclusion These results suggested that there was no significant relationship between PMS and COMT gene polymorphism. Since we could not find a direct correlation between the COMT gene polymorphism and PMS, further studies including alternative neurotransmitter pathways are needed to find an effective treatment for this disease.

Abstract
Perinatal mental illness has a significant implication on maternal health, birth outcomes, and the offspring's development. Prevalence estimates of perinatal psychiatric illnesses range widely, with substantial heterogeneity in different population studies, with a lower prevalence rate in high- rather than low- or middle-income countries. Because of the potential negative impact on maternal and child outcomes and the potential lability of these disorders, the perinatal period is a critical time to identify psychiatric illnesses. Thus, obstetricians and midwives play a crucial role in assessing women's mental health needs and to refer identified women promptly for multidisciplinary specialist assessment. However, there is still limited evidence on best practice assessment and management policies during pregnancy and postpartum. This review focuses on the prevalence of common perinatal mental disorders and antenatal screening policies to identify women at risk. The effect of these conditions and their management on pregnancy, fetal outcomes, and child development are discussed.

Abstract
We investigated whether a formulation containing vitamins and minerals (vit&min) could improve the worsening of mood changes occurring after delivery ("a.d."). The study was performed in 552 healthy non-anaemic puerperal women ("p.w") without risk factors for puerperal depression ("p.d"). They were at their first full-term pregnancy, and spontaneously delivered healthy newborns. The Edinburgh Depression Postnatal scale (EPDS) evaluates the psychological status of "p.w". EPDS was administered the 3rd (visit 1), 15th (visit 2) and 30th (visit 3) day "a.d.". An EPDS >12 indicates a major susceptibility to "p.d". At the same time intervals, haemoglobin, iron and ferritin (haematological parameters) levels were evaluated. After visit 1, the subjects were randomized to vit&min treatment (group A; N.274) or to calcium/vitamin D3 treatment (group B; N.278). In both groups haematological parameters significantly increased without differences between the groups. EPDS score improved in both groups, but in the group A, the EPDS decrease was significantly larger (p < 0.05) in comparison to the group B. This effect is mainly evident in subjects with a basal EPDS ≥ 12. An early examination of psychological condition could select "p.w." with a high susceptibility to neuronal changes occurring postpartum. Vit&min favourably modulates brain functions antagonizing the evolution to "p.d".
