Abstract
Ginger rich in polyphenols, possesses various biomedical properties. Researchers investigated the effects of dietary ginger supplementation on turkey performance traits, biochemical parameters, haematological parameters and mRNA gene expression. Ginger root powder was administered at different doses (0, 10, 20 and 40 g/kg) to the turkeys. Notably, the 20 g/kg group exhibited improved performance traits and a higher broiler production efficiency factor (BPEF). Importantly, ginger was found to be safe for turkeys based on serum indices. Furthermore, the expression of several growth-related genes, including growth hormone receptor (GHR), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT), cyclooxygenase 3 (COX-3) and uncoupling protein 3 (UCP-3), was upregulated in the 20 g/kg enhancing their growth performance and economic efficiency in addition to keeping their health status safe. Therefore, Ginger root powder can be supplemented for turkey at a concentration of 2% as the addition of ginger powder is a long-term process.

Abstract
Control of meat quality traits is an important goal of any farm animal production, including poultry. A better understanding of the biochemical properties of muscle fiber properties that drive muscle development and ultimately meat quality constitutes one of the major challenging topics in animal production and meat science. In this paper, the existing classification methods of skeletal muscle fibers in poultry were reviewed and the relationship between contractile and metabolic characteristics of muscle fibers and poultry meat quality was described. Finally, a comprehensive review of multiple potential factors affecting muscle fiber distribution and conversion is presented, including breed, sex, hormones, growth performance, diet, muscle position, exercise, and ambient temperature. We emphasize that knowledge of muscle fiber typing is essential to better understand how to control muscle characteristics throughout the life cycle of animals to better manage the final quality of poultry meat.

Abstract
The type of muscle fiber plays a crucial role in the growth, development, and dynamic plasticity of animals' skeletal muscle. Additionally, it is a primary determinant of the quality of both fresh and processed meat. Therefore, understanding the regulatory factors that contribute to muscle fibers' heterogeneity is of paramount importance. Recent advances in sequencing and omics technologies have enabled comprehensive cross-verification of research on the factors affecting the types of muscle fiber across multiple levels, including the genome, transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome. These advancements have facilitated deeper exploration into the related biological questions. This review focused on the impact of individual characteristics, feeding patterns, and genetic regulation on the proportion and interconversion of different muscle fibers. The findings indicated that individual characteristics and feeding patterns significantly influence the type of muscle fiber, which can effectively enhance the type and distribution of muscle fibers in livestock. Furthermore, non-coding RNA, genes and signaling pathways between complicated regulatory mechanisms and interactions have a certain degree of impact on muscle fibers' heterogeneity. This, in turn, changes muscle fiber profile in living animals through genetic selection or environmental factors, and has the potential to modulate the quality of fresh meat. Collectively, we briefly reviewed the structure of skeletal muscle tissue and then attempted to review the inevitable connection between the quality of fresh meat and the type of muscle fiber, with particular attention to potential events involved in regulating muscle fibers' heterogeneity.

Abstract
A low-protein (LP) diet may alleviate the environmental impact of chicken meat production by reducing nitrogen excretion and ammonia emissions. Thus, this study investigated the effect of a 15% reduced protein diet with or without amino acid (AA) supplementation on the growth performance of broiler chicks from 10 to 35 days of age and the underlying mechanism for loss of skeletal muscle mass. Thirty-six male broiler chicks were allocated to three experimental groups based on body weight: control, LP, and essential AA-supplemented LP (LP+AA). The body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and weight of breast muscles and legs significantly decreased only in the LP group at the end of the feeding period. Plasma uric acid levels were significantly lower in the LP+AA group than those of the other groups. In the LP group, mRNA levels of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 isoform B were significantly higher in the pectoralis major, whereas those of atrogin-1, muscle RING-finger protein-1, and myoblast determination protein 1 were significantly higher in the biceps femoris compared to those in the control group. There were no significant differences in insulin-like growth factor 1 mRNA levels in the liver or skeletal muscle between groups. These findings suggested that supplementation with essential AAs ameliorated the impaired effects of an LP diet on growth performance in broiler chicks, and that the transcriptional changes in proteolytic genes in skeletal muscles might be related to the impaired effects of the LP diet.

Abstract
The insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system plays an indispensable role in embryonic and postnatal development in mammals. However, the effects of the system on growth, carcass, and egg-laying traits, and diversified selection have not been systematically studied in chickens. In the present study, firstly the composition and gene structures of the chicken IGF system were investigated using phylogenetic tree and conserved synteny analysis. Then the effects of the genetic variations in the IGF system genes on breeding of specialized varieties were explored by principal component analysis. In addition, the spatiotemporal expression properties of the genes in this system were analyzed by RT-qPCR and the functions of the genes in egg production performance and growth were explored by association study. Moreover, the effects of IGF-binding proteins 3 (IGFBP3) on skeletal muscle development in chicken were investigated by cell cycle analysis, 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) and Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assays. The results showed that the chicken IGF system included 13 members which could be classified into 3 groups based on their amino acid sequences: IGF binding proteins 1 to 5 and 7 (IGFBP1-5 and 7) belonged to the first group; IGF 1 and 2 (IGF1 and IGF2), and IGF 1 and 2 receptor (IGF1R and IGF2R) belonged to the second group; and IGF2 binding proteins 1-3 (IGF2BP1-3) belonged to the third group. The IGF2BP1 and 3, and IGFBP2, 3, and 7 genes likely contributed more to the formation of both the specialized meat-type and egg-type lines, whereas IGFBP1 and 5 likely contributed more to the formation of the egg-type lines. The SNPs in the IGF2BP3 and IGFBP2 and 5 genes were significantly associated with egg number, and SNPs in the IGFBP3 promoter region were significantly associated with body weight, breast muscle weight and leg muscle weight. The IGFBP3 inhibited proliferation but promoted differentiation of chicken primary myoblasts (CPMs). These results provide insights into the roles of the IGF system in the diversified selection of chickens. The SNPs associated with egg-laying performance, growth, and carcass traits could be used as genetic markers for breeding selection of chickens in the future.

Abstract
The regulation of skeletal muscle growth and development in chicken is complex. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been found to play an important role in the process, and more research is needed to further understand the regulatory mechanism of miRNAs. In this study, leg muscles of Jinghai yellow chickens at 300 d with low body weight (slow-growing group) and high body weight (fast-growing group) were collected for miRNA sequencing (miRNA-seq) and Bioinformatics analysis revealed 12 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) between the two groups. We predicted 150 target genes for the DEMs, and GO and KEGG pathway analysis showed the target genes of miR-24-3p and novel_miR_133 were most enriched in the terms related to growth and development. Moreover, networks of DEMs and target genes showed that miR-24-3p and novel_miR_133 were the 2 core miRNAs. Hence, miR-24-3p was selected for further functional exploration in chicken primary myoblasts (CPMs) with molecular biology technologies including qPCR, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) and immunofluorescence. When proliferating CPMs were transfected with miR-24-3p mimic, the expression of cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 1A (P21) was up-regulated and both CCK-8 and EdU assays showed that the proliferation of CPMs was inhibited. However, when the inhibitor was transfected into the proliferating CPMs, the opposite results were found. In differentiated CPMs, transfection with miR-24-3p mimic resulted in up regulation of MYOD, MYOG and MYHC after 48 h. Myotube areas also increased significantly compared to the mimic negative control (NC) group. When treated with inhibitor, differentiation CPMs produced the opposite effects. Overall, we revealed 2 miRNAs (novel_miR_133 and miR-24-3p) significantly related with growth and development and further proved that miR-24-3p could suppress the proliferation and promote differentiation of CPMs. The results would facilitate understanding the effects of miRNAs on the growth and development of chickens at the post-transcriptional level and could also have an important guiding role in yellow-feathered chicken breeding.

Abstract
Phenotypically plastic responses of animals to adjust to environmental variation are pervasive. Reversible plasticity (i.e., phenotypic flexibility), where adult phenotypes can be reversibly altered according to prevailing environmental conditions, allow for better matching of phenotypes to the environment and can generate fitness benefits but may also be associated with costs that trade-off with capacity for flexibility. Here, we review the literature on avian metabolic and muscle plasticity in response to season, temperature, migration and experimental manipulation of flight costs, and employ an integrative approach to explore the phenotypic flexibility of metabolic rates and skeletal muscle in wild birds. Basal (minimum maintenance metabolic rate) and summit (maximum cold-induced metabolic rate) metabolic rates are flexible traits in birds, typically increasing with increasing energy demands. Because skeletal muscles are important for energy use at the organismal level, especially to maximum rates of energy use during exercise or shivering thermogenesis, we consider flexibility of skeletal muscle at the tissue and ultrastructural levels in response to variations in the thermal environment and in workloads due to flight exercise. We also examine two major muscle remodeling regulatory pathways: myostatin and insulin-like growth factor -1 (IGF-1). Changes in myostatin and IGF-1 pathways are sometimes, but not always, regulated in a manner consistent with metabolic rate and muscle mass flexibility in response to changing energy demands in wild birds, but few studies have examined such variation so additional study is needed to fully understand roles for these pathways in regulating metabolic flexibility in birds. Muscle ultrastrutural variation in terms of muscle fiber diameter and associated myonuclear domain (MND) in birds is plastic and highly responsive to thermal variation and increases in workload, however, only a few studies have examined ultrastructural flexibility in avian muscle. Additionally, the relationship between myostatin, IGF-1, and satellite cell (SC) proliferation as it relates to avian muscle flexibility has not been addressed in birds and represents a promising avenue for future study.

Abstract
Macleaya cordata (M. cordata) is a herbal plant that has abundant amounts of sanguinarine, which has many biomedical properties. The effects of M. cordata dietary supplementation on the productive performance, some blood constituents, and growth-related genes' expression were evaluated in turkey. M. cordata extract was dietary supplemented to turkey at levels of 25, 50, and 100 ppm and a control group. Growth performance measurements (FBW, ADG, and FCR) and production efficiency factor for turkey (BPEF) were similar (p > 0.05) in all supplemented groups. M. cordata has no adverse effects (p > 0.05) on the birds' health regarding hematological (Hb, RBCs, WBCs, and PCV) and blood biochemical indices evaluating liver function, kidney function, and lipid profile. Moreover, the mRNA expression of growth-related genes, such as growth hormone receptor (GHR), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), cyclooxygenase 3 (COX-3), adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT), and uncoupling protein 3 (UCP-3) were upregulated (p < 0.001) in M. cordata treatments with the highest value for SG50 compared with the control group. We concluded that exogenous M. cordata dietary supplementation upregulated the expression of growth-related genes in turkey at a level of 50 ppm without adverse effects on their health status regarding hematological and biochemical indices.

Abstract
In mammalian skeletal muscles, protein synthesis rates vary according to fiber types. We herein demonstrated differences in the regulatory mechanism underlying the protein synthesis in the pectoralis major (a glycolytic twitch muscle), adductor superficialis (an oxidative twitch muscle), and adductor profound (a tonic muscle) muscles of 14-day-old chickens. Under ad libitum feeding conditions, protein synthesis is significantly higher in the adductor superficialis muscle than in the pectoralis major muscle, suggesting that protein synthesis is upregulated in oxidative muscles in chickens, similar to that in mammals. In the pectoralis major muscle, fasting significantly inhibited the Akt/S6 pathway and protein synthesis with a corresponding decrease in plasma insulin concentration. Conversely, the insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) mRNA levels significantly increased. These findings suggest that the insulin/Akt/S6 pathway plays an important role in the regulation of protein synthesis in the pectoralis major muscle. Interestingly, protein synthesis in the adductor superficialis muscle appears to be regulated in an Akt-independent manner, because fasting significantly decreased S6 phosphorylation and protein synthesis without affecting Akt phosphorylation. In the adductor profound muscle, IGF-1 expression, phosphorylation of Akt and S6, and protein synthesis were decreased by fasting, suggesting that insulin and/or skeletal IGF-1 appear contribute to protein synthesis via the Akt/S6 pathway. These findings revealed the differential regulation of protein synthesis depending on skeletal muscle types in chickens.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether β2-AR mRNA expression is involved in either atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA expression or protein degradation in chicken skeletal muscle by comparing fast- and slow-growing chicks during the neonatal period. Based on their body weight gain from 1 to 5 days of age, 5-day-old chicks (Gallus gallus domestics) were divided into a slow-growing and a fast-growing group, the mean weight gains of which were 6.3 ± 1.3 g/day and 11.3 ± 0.9 g/day, respectively. The ratio of pectoral muscle weight to total body weight was higher in the fast-growing group of chicks than in the slow-growing group. In addition, the plasma 3-methylhistidine concentration, an index of protein degradation in skeletal muscle, was significantly lower in the fast-growing than in the slow-growing chicks. The mRNA expression of β2-AR, which we previously found is involved in decreasing muscle protein degradation by suppression atrogin-1/MAFbx mRNA expression, was significantly higher in the pectoral muscle of the fast-growing group compared with that of the slow-growing group. Concordantly, lower mRNA expression of atrogin-1/MAFbx was observed in the pectoral muscle of the fast-growing chicks. However, in the sartorius muscle, which is a muscle in the thigh, the ratio of the muscle weight to total body weight was not significantly different between the two groups of chicks at 5 days of age. In addition, there was no significant difference in the mRNA expressions of β2-AR and atrogin-1/MAFbx in the sartorius muscle between these two groups. These results suggest that β2-AR expression levels might be physiologically significant in the control of protein degradation in the pectoral muscle of neonatal chicks.
