Abstract
BACKGROUND Migraines have been associated with nutritional imbalances within the brain, sparking ongoing interest in the possible association between dietary elements, including milk intake, and the occurrence of migraines. Nevertheless, the exact nature of the connection between milk consumption and migraines remains unclear. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis sought to explore the association between milk intake and the prevalence of migraines. The study utilized data from individuals aged 20 and above who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2004. In our study, we meticulously gathered comprehensive data on severe headaches or migraines, milk consumption, along with critical variables such as age, sex, marital status, and body mass index, among others. Milk consumption among participants was ascertained through a questionnaire. Logistic regression modeling and subgroup analyses were employed to evaluate the association between milk consumption and the incidence of severe headaches or migraines. RESULTS Among the 8850 participants, 19.98% (1768/8850) were identified as having migraines. Compared to individuals with only regular/whole milk consumption in the past 30 days, the adjusted OR values for only skim milk consumption in the past 30 days were 0.73 (95%CI: 0.60-0.89, p = 0.001), 0.78 (95%CI: 0.64-0.95, p = 0.014), and 0.77 (95%CI: 0.63-0.93, p = 0.009), respectively. CONCLUSION A notable association was detected between the type of milk intake and the occurrence of migraines. These results lay the groundwork for future investigations into the role of milk consumption in migraine management, potentially informing strategies for alleviating migraine symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association of periodontitis and clinical periodontal parameters with migraine as well as mortality among people with migraine disease. BACKGROUND Periodontitis has been shown to increase the systemic inflammatory burden thereby promoting various systemic health outcomes; however, the evidence regarding the relationship between periodontitis and migraine is scarce. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed, and it included 13,108 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2004). Weighted logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between periodontitis/clinical periodontal parameters and migraine. Mediation analysis was performed to explore the potential mediating role of inflammatory response. A cohort study including 1909 participants with migraine disease was further conducted to assess the associations between periodontitis/clinical periodontal parameters and mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer in participants with migraine disease using Cox proportional hazards models. Death outcomes were ascertained by linkage to National Death Index records through December 31, 2018. RESULTS Periodontitis was positively associated with migraine (odds ratio [OR] 1.29, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-1.65). Each 1-unit rise in attachment loss and pocket depth was linked to a 17.5% (OR 1.18, 95% CI 1.08-1.29) and 28.1% (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.08-1.51) increase in migraine risk, respectively. Mediation analyses revealed that leukocyte, monocyte, and lymphocyte counts mediated 17.9%, 7.3%, and 20.1%, respectively, of the association between periodontitis and migraine. During a median follow-up of 17.7 years among 1909 participants with migraine disease, periodontitis was associated with greater all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 1.82, 95% CI 1.25-2.66), but was not significantly associated with mortality from CVD or cancer among participants with migraine disease. Similar association patterns were also observed for attachment loss and pocket depth. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence that periodontitis and clinical periodontal parameters were significantly associated with migraine as well as all-cause mortality in people with migraine disease. These findings underscore the importance of considering periodontal health in the prevention and management strategies for migraine disease.

Abstract
Background Studies have shown that an antioxidant diet is a protective factor against migraine. However, the association between selenium, an important antioxidant consumed from the diet, and migraine has received little attention. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between dietary selenium intake with migraine, with particular interest in age differences. Methods This study based on cross-sectional data from people who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. The multiple logistic regression model was applied to examine the association between selenium intake and migraine, and subgroup analyses were performed. Non-linear associations were explored with restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. Results The study included a total of 9,849 adults aged 20 years and older. Compared with individuals with lowest selenium intake Q1 (≤59.4 ug/day), the adjusted OR values for selenium intake and migraine in Q2 (59.41-82.70 ug/day), Q3 (82.71-106 ug/day), Q4 (106.01-143.16 ug/day), and Q5 (≥143.17 ug/day) were 0.82 (95% CI: 0.64-1.05), 0.99 (95% CI: 0.77-1.26), 0.74 (95% CI: 0.54-0.99), and 0.68 (95% CI: 0.48-0.97), respectively. Sensitivity analyses showed a robust association between them. Our findings also suggested an interaction between age and selenium intake (p for interaction = 0.04). Additionally, the relationship between selenium intake and migraine in adults with 20-50 years was L-shaped. The OR of developing migraine was 0.97 (95% CI: 0.94-0.98) in individuals with selenium intake ≥101.9 ug/day in adults with 20-50 years. Conclusion A higher dietary selenium intake is significantly associated with a decreased prevalence of migraine, and age can modify the association between them. Therefore, the present study indicate that an appropriate intake of selenium-rich foods in adults aged 20-50 years may prevent migraines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D is thought to play a role in the development of migraine, but the nature of the relationship is still not fully understood. Although some studies have shown an association between vitamin D deficiency and migraine, other studies have had inconsistent or inconclusive results. Therefore, further research is needed to better understand the relationship between vitamin D and migraine headaches. METHODS We selected 9142 participants from the 2001-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In our study, the term "serum vitamin D" refers to the concentration of 25OHD2 + 25OHD3 (nmol/L) in the blood. Migraine was assessed based on self-reports in the miscellaneous pain section of the NHANES questionnaire. Associations between vitamin D and the risk of migraine were examined using multiple logistic regression, smoothed curve fitting, and stratified analyses. RESULTS In our study, 20.53% of the participants suffered from migraine. The prevalence of migraine was higher in those with lower serum vitamin D levels. Participants in the highest quartile of serum vitamin D levels were found to have a 16% lower prevalence than those in the lowest quartile in the fully adjusted model (OR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.71-0.99). This result was supported by stratified analysis and smoothed curve fitting. CONCLUSION Our study showed a significant negative correlation between serum vitamin D levels and the prevalence of migraine in American adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation play critical roles in the pathogenesis of migraine, a neurovascular disease. Cryptoxanthin is a carotenoid known for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the specific association between serum cryptoxanthin levels and migraine remains unclear. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between migraine and serum cryptoxanthin levels. METHODS For this cross-sectional analysis, information was gathered from individuals ≥20 years who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2001 to 2004. Details information was collected on migraines, serum cryptoxanthin levels and various crucial factors. Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression analyses were performed to investigate the relationship between serum cryptoxanthin and the occurrence of migraines. RESULTS The study included 8,645 participants, of whom 20.00%(1734/8645) experienced migraine. There was a nonlinear relationship (p < 0.001) between serum cryptoxanthin levels and migraine, which was depicted as an L-shaped curve. The occurrence rate of individuals with serum cryptoxanthin levels below 26.64 nmol/dL experiencing migraine was 0.976 (95% CI: 0.965∼0.987, p<0.001). CONCLUSION In adults among the United States, increased levels of serum cryptoxanthin were associated with decreased risk of migriane with a turning point at around 26.64 nmol/dL in American adults. Further studys are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to assess the association between dietary folate intake and severe headache or migraine. Methods This cross-sectional study utilized the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2004. Weighted logistic regression models, restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression, sensitivity analysis, and stratified analyses were performed to evaluate the association between dietary folate intake and severe headache or migraine. Results A total of 4,107 participants were included, with 704 individuals (17.14%) experienced severe headache or migraine. After adjusting for all covariates, an independent association was found between dietary folate intake and severe headache or migraine (OR = 0.77, 95% CI: 0.64-0.93, p = 0.005). When folate intake was categorized, individuals in Q2 (251.21-356.00 μg/d), Q3 (356.19-514.00 μg/d), and Q4 (≥515.00 μg/d) had ORs of 0.95 (95% CI: 0.75-1.20, p = 0.660), 0.86 (95% CI: 0.67-1.12, p = 0.266), and 0.65 (95% CI: 0.48-0.89, p = 0.007), respectively, compared to those in Q1 (≤251.00 μg/d). The RCS regression showed a linear negative relationship between dietary folate intake and severe headache or migraine. Stratified and sensitivity analyses yielded similar results. Conclusion There was a linear negative relationship between dietary folate intake and migraine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The importance of obesity as a factor that increases the probability of migraine episodes is increasingly acknowledged. Thus, this study aimed to explore the potential correlation between central obesity and migraine, emphasizing the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) as a key measure in assessing this relationship. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis included 13,344 individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999-2004. To investigate the association associations between WHtR and migraine, we utilized refined multivariate logistic regression models, smoothing curve fitting methods, subpopulation analysis, and interactive testing. RESULTS Of the 13,344 participants, 2,764 (20.72%) had migraines. A significant positive correlation was observed between the WHtR and migraine incidence in both the partially adjusted model (3.08 [95% CI: 1.92-4.94]) and the crude model (1.95 [95% CI: 1.23-3.08]). The participants in the highest quartile of the WHtR had a 13% greater incidence of migraine than those in the lowest quartile [1.13(0.99,1.28)]. The interaction analysis revealed a statistically significant difference (p<0.01) in this relationship among the subgroups. Notably, the correlation between WHtR and migraine risk was not significant and negative in patients ≥60 years, indicating that obesity has a mitigating role in preventing migraine in this elderly population. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of migraine increased concomitantly with increased WHtR. However, central obesity has a protective effect against migraine occurrence in individuals ≥60 years. Thus, our findings underscore the importance of WHtR in migraine prevention and management strategies and highlight its potential as a critical biomarker for mitigating migraine incidence.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The association between unreplaced missing posterior teeth and migraine has not been sufficiently reported. PURPOSE The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationships between unreplaced missing posterior teeth and migraine or severe headaches. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2004 on 12 662 participants aged between 20 and 85 years were analyzed. The survey produced complete data on dentition examination, dietary intakes, and self-reported migraine or severe headaches. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed (α=.05). RESULTS A total of 20.28% of the participants had migraine or severe headaches. After adjusting demographic, clinical, and dietary covariates, the total number of missing teeth was not significantly associated with migraine or severe headaches, and only having both anterior and posterior missing teeth was significantly associated with migraine or severe headaches. The odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) was 1.32(1.09, 1.60) (P=.007). A significantly positive correlation was found between the number of unreplaced missing teeth and migraine or severe headaches. An increase of 1 in the number of unreplaced missing teeth was associated with a 3% increase in migraine or severe headaches (OR and CI: 1.03(1.01, 1.06), P=.012). However, no significant relationship was found between replaced missing teeth and migraine or severe headaches (OR and CI: 1.00(0.99, 1.01), P=.800). Furthermore, unreplaced missing posterior teeth and both unreplaced anterior and posterior teeth were significantly related with more migraine or severe headaches, but no significant association of unreplaced teeth was found with migraine or severe headaches only in the anterior zone in the adjusted model (OR and CI: anterior teeth unreplaced: 0.90(0.43, 1.88), P=.800; posterior teeth unreplaced: 1.14(1.00, 1.30), P=.047; both anterior and posterior teeth unreplaced: 1.61(1.16, 2.22), P=.007). Because of the important association between posterior missing teeth and migraine or severe headaches, further analyses found a 1 tooth increase in unreplaced posterior teeth was related to a 4% increment in migraine or severe headaches (OR and CI: 1.04(1.01, 1.07), P=.017); however, the number of replaced posterior teeth was not associated with migraine or severe headaches (OR and CI: 1.00(0.99, 1.02), P=.900). CONCLUSIONS The number of unreplaced missing posterior teeth was positively associated with migraine or severe headaches, while missing but restored posterior teeth were not associated with migraine or severe headaches in a US population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have revealed that an antioxidant diet is a protective factor against migraine. However, the association between zinc, an important antioxidant obtained from the diet, and migraine has received little attention. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between zinc intake with migraine. METHODS The present study used cross-sectional data from individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were performed to explore the association between zinc intake and migraine. RESULTS A total of 9849 adults aged 20 years or older were included in this study. Zinc intake was negatively associated with migraine. Compared to participants in the lowest group of dietary zinc intake Q1 (≤5.93 mg/day), the adjusted ORs for migraine in Q2 (5.94-8.38 mg/day), Q3 (8.39-11.26 mg/day), Q4 (11.27-15.75 mg/day), and Q5 (≥15.76 mg/day) were 0.73 (95% CI: 0.60-0.89, p = 0.004), 0.72 (95% CI: 0.55-0.95, p = 0.02), 0.76 (95% CI: 0.58-0.99, p = 0.04) and 0.73 (95% CI: 0.50-1.05, p = 0.08), respectively. Our findings also suggested an interaction between zinc intake and age (P for interaction = 0.007). Additionally, the relationship between zinc intake and migraine in adults with 20-50 years was non-linear. CONCLUSIONS A higher zinc intake is significantly associated with a decreased prevalence of migraine, and age can modify the association between them.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Headache is one of the most common neurological symptoms. Headache disorders are associated with a high global burden of disease. Prior studies indicate that short-to-medium term sodium reduction reduces headache symptom. This study evaluated the effects of long-term reduced-sodium, added-potassium salt on headache frequency and severity in rural China. METHODS The Salt substitute and stroke study (SSaSS) was an open-label cluster-randomised trial in rural China designed to evaluate the effect of salt substitution on mortality and cardiovascular events. Participants included adults with a history of prior stroke and those aged ≥60 years with uncontrolled high blood pressure (BP). Villages were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio either to intervention with salt substitute (75% sodium chloride and 25% potassium chloride by mass) or to control with continued use of regular salt (100% sodium chloride). In this pre-specified analysis, between-group differences in headache frequency and severity were evaluated. The study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (identifier number: NCT02092090). RESULTS A total of 20,995 participants were included in the trial (mean age 64.3 years, 51% female, mean follow-up 4.7 years). At final follow-up at the end of the study, headache outcome data including frequency and severity of headaches was available for 16,486 (98%) of 16,823 living participants. Overall, 4454/16,486 (27%) individuals reported having headache: 27.4% in the intervention group (2301/8386) vs 26.6% in the control group (2153/8100) (RR 1.04, 95% CI: 0.93, 1.16, p = 0.48). There was no difference in headache severity between intervention and control groups (p = 0.90). CONCLUSION Long term salt substitution did not reduce the frequency or severity of headaches in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Trans-fatty acid (TFA) has been linked to an increased risk of a variety of diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and cancer. However, the relationship between plasma TFAs and migraine is little known. The current study aimed to determine the association between plasma TFAs and migraine in a large cross-sectional study among U.S. adults. METHODS The participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included during the period 1999-2000. The plasma concentrations of four major TFAs, including palmitelaidic acid (C16:1n-7t), elaidic acid (C18:1n-9t), vaccenic acid (C18:1n-7t), and linolelaidic acid (C18:2n-6t, 9t) were measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The presence of migraine headache was determined by self-report questionnaire. Weighted multivariable logistic regressions and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regressions were explored to assess the relationship between plasma TFAs and migraine. Furthermore, stratified analysis and testing of interaction terms were used to evaluate the effect modification by sex, age, race/ethnicity, family income, and BMI. RESULTS A total of 1534 participants were included. The overall weighted prevalence of severe headache or migraine was 21.2 %. After adjusting for all potential covariates, plasma levels of elaidic acid and linolelaidic acid were positively associated with migraine. The adjusted OR values were 1.18 (95 %CI: 1.08-1.29, p=0.014, per 10 units increase) and 1.24 (95 %CI: 1.07-1.44, p=0.024). Then the included participants were divided into 2-quantiles by plasma TFA levels. Compared with participants with lower plasma levels of elaidic acid and linolelaidic acid (Q1 groups), those in the Q2 group had a higher prevalence of migraine when adjusted for all covariates in Model 2. The adjusted OR values were 2.43 (95 %CI: 1.14-5.18, p=0.037) for elaidic acid, and 2.18 (95 %CI: 1.14-4.20, p=0.036) for linolelaidic acid. Results were robust when analyses were stratified by sex, age, race/ethnicity, family income, and BMI, and no effect modification on the association was found. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrated a positive association between migraine prevalence and plasma levels of elaidic acid and linolelaidic acid in US adults. These results highlight the connection between circulating TFAs and migraine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research on the effects of body mass index (BMI) on severe headache or migraine is limited and controversial. The aim of this study was to explore the association between BMI and the prevalence of migraine, with particular interest in diabetes status difference. METHODS The present study used analyzed data from people who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were applied to investigate the relationship between body mass index and migraine. RESULTS A total of 10,074 adults aged 20 years or older were included in this study. Body mass index was positively related to migraine, and the corresponding odds ratio (OR; 95% CI) was 1.02 (1.01, 1.03; p < 0.001). And compared to participants in the lowest group of body mass index (< 25 kg/m2), the adjusted ORs for migraine in medium group (25-29.9 kg/m2), and highest group (≥ 30 kg/m2) were 1.14 (95% CI: 0.98-1.32, p = 0.09) and 1.30 (95% CI: 1.11-1.52, p = 0.0022), respectively. The relationship between BMI and migraine exhibited a linear in overall in the RCS. Our findings also suggested an interaction between BMI and diabetes. The relationship between BMI and migraine in adults with diabetes was non-linear. The OR of developing migraine was 1.30 (95% CI: 1.10-1.54) in individuals with BMI ≥ 29.71 kg/m2 in adults with diabetes. CONCLUSION A higher body mass index is significantly associated with an increased prevalence of migraine, and diabetes status can modify the association between them.

Abstract
PURPOSE Migraine is a highly prevalent headache disorder, and intake of various nutrients and special diets may improve migraine symptoms. We aimed to clarify the association between nutritional status and migraine. PATIENTS AND METHODS We collected the data of 1838/8953 (migraineurs/all participants) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004 cycle. We used weighted multivariable linear or logistic regression analyses to study the association between the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and the occurrence of severe headache or migraine. RESULTS After adjusting for confounding variables, we found that mild (PNI 45-50) or moderate to severe (PNI <45) malnutrition were associated with higher prevalence of severe headache or migraine (odds ratio [OR] 1.06, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00-1.12, P = 0.004; OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.03-1.12, P < 0.001). In addition, we found that those with severe headache or migraine consumed less alcohol, dietary fiber, cholesterol, total folate, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin K, selenium, potassium, magnesium, and copper, and consumed more caffeine and theobromine than did those without severe headache or migraine. CONCLUSION The PNI is associated with migraine prevalence, and may thus serve as a predictor of migraine risk and highlights the potential of nutrition-based strategies for migraine prevention and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Dysautonomia refers to the dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system and encompasses a wide variety of autonomic symptoms and disorders. The most common autonomic disorders are postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS), and orthostatic hypotension (OH), which may be encountered in clinical practice as part of a triad of dysautonomia, hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD), and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). Migraine is one of the most common comorbidities of POTS, HSD, and MCAS; conversely, these conditions are also prevalent in patients with migraine, especially in those with multiple systemic symptoms, such as chronic dizziness, lightheadedness, orthostatic intolerance, joint pain, and allergic symptoms. Diagnostic criteria, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and therapeutic considerations in patients with migraine and comorbid dysautonomia, HSD, and MCAS are reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS Numerous studies indicate a significant overlap and shared pathophysiology in migraine, dysautonomia, HSD, and MCAS. In clinical setting, dysautonomia, HSD, and MCAS may present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge in patients with migraine and require a high index of suspicion on the part of the neurologist. Diagnosis and treatment of these complex disorders in patients with migraine is essential to comprehensive patient-centric care, reduced symptom burden, and improved functional impairment secondary to both migraine and comorbidities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Clinical studies demonstrate that supplemental riboflavin is an efficacious and low risk prophylactic treatment for migraine. However, background riboflavin intake of adults with migraine from nutritional sources has not been evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate riboflavin consumption of adults with migraine in the United States, and further investigate the relationship between nutritional riboflavin consumption and the prevalence of migraine among adults. METHODS This cross-sectional secondary analysis included 3439 participants ages 20-50 years old in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2001 to 2004. Presence of migraine in the past three months was self-reported. Riboflavin intake was determined from one 24-hour recall interview. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for riboflavin intake quartiles using an adjusted logistic regression model. Statistical significance was determined using an adjusted Wald test. RESULTS Results showed that mean dietary consumption of riboflavin fulfilled the Recommended Dietary Allowance for migraine and control groups. Dietary riboflavin intake was associated with the odds of migraine (pWald = 0.002), but no association was found for supplemental or total riboflavin consumption (pWald = 0.479 and 0.136). When stratified by gender, there was no association of dietary riboflavin with migraine in males (pWald = 0.423), but an association was observed in females (pWald = 0.014). DISCUSSION The RDA value for riboflavin was not relevant for assessing odds of migraine; however, differing odds of migraine were detected across dietary riboflavin consumption groups at levels above the RDA. Future riboflavin supplementation trials for migraine prophylaxis should consider measuring background dietary intake.

Abstract
Background Migraine is a prevalent neurovascular headache disorder. The link between dietary potassium and blood pressure has been established. We sought to delineate the relationship between dietary potassium intake and the prevalence of migraines. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 1999-2004, comprising 10,254 participants aged ≥20 years. Participants who reported severe headaches or migraine in the self-report questionnaire were identified as migraineurs. A 24-h dietary recall methodology was used to assess dietary potassium intake. Multivariate regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) modeling were utilized to elucidate the relationship between dietary potassium and migraines. Results Among the 10,254 participants, 20.1% were identified with migraine or severe headaches. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for migraine occurrence in the Q2 dietary potassium intake (1771-2,476 mg/d) was 0.84 (95% CI: 0.73-0.97, p = 0.021) compared to the lowest quartile (Q1, ≤ 1771 mg/d). The relationship between dietary potassium and migraine exhibited an L-shaped pattern (non-linear, p = 0.016) with an inflection at approximately 1439.3 mg/d. In the subgroup analysis, when compared to Q1, who had the lowest dietary potassium intake, the adjusted OR for Q2 in females, those in the medium-high household income group, and with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 were as follows: (OR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.69-0.98), (OR, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.66-0.95), and (OR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.66-0.93), respectively. No significant interaction was observed across groups after adjusting for all possible covariates. Conclusion The relationship between dietary potassium intake and migraine prevalence among US adults appears to follow an L-shaped curve.

Abstract
Aims The present study was conducted among Iranian individuals diagnosed with migraine headaches to investigate the association between plant-based eating patterns and the clinical features of a migraine headache. Methods In total, 262 patients aged 20-50 years who were diagnosed with migraine headaches were included in the current cross-sectional study. Participants' dietary intake was assessed using a validated 168-item, semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Three versions of the plant-based diet index (PDI) comprising overall PDI, healthy PDI (hPDI), and unhealthy PDI (uPDI) were generated. Headache frequency, duration, and severity were assessed via a 30-day headache diary. Migraine-related disability was assessed with a validated version of the headache impact test (HIT-6) questionnaire. Serum nitric oxide (NO) was measured using the Griess method utilizing serum samples. Results After controlling for potential confounders, an increase in mean PDI score from 48.22 to 61.67 decreased the frequency of headaches by -2.95 (95% CI: 0.06, 0.53; ptrend = 0.005). PDI was inversely associated with serum levels of NO in those with the highest scores of PDI compared to those with the lowest scores after adjustment for confounders (β = -7.69; 95% CI: -14.68, -0.69; ptrend = 0.028). After adjustment for potential confounders, an increase in the mean hPDI score from 47.96 to 65.25 decreased serum levels of NO by -11.92 (95% CI: -19.74, -4.10; ptrend = 0.003). Conclusion Our findings suggest that higher adherence to a plant-based eating style, as evidenced by higher PDI and hPDI values, was significantly associated with lower headache frequency and serum levels of NO.

Abstract
Targeting calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and its receptor by antibodies and antagonists was a breakthrough in migraine prevention and treatment. However, not all migraine patients respond to CGRP-based therapy and a fraction of those who respond complain of aliments mainly in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, CGRP and migraine are associated with obesity and metabolic diseases, including diabetes. Therefore, CGRP may play an important role in the functioning of the gut-brain-microflora axis. CGRP secretion may be modulated by dietary compounds associated with the disruption of calcium signaling and upregulation of mitogen-activated kinase phosphatases 1 and 3. CGRP may display anorexigenic properties through induction of anorexigenic neuropeptides, such as cholecystokinin and/or inhibit orexigenic neuropeptides, such as neuropeptide Y and melanin-concentrating hormone CH, resulting in the suppression of food intake, functionally coupled to the activation of the hypothalamic 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate. The anorexigenic action of CGRP observed in animal studies may reflect its general potential to control appetite/satiety or general food intake. Therefore, dietary nutrients may modulate CGRP, and CGRP may modulate their intake. Therefore, anti-CGRP therapy should consider this mutual dependence to increase the efficacy of the therapy and reduce its unwanted side effects. This narrative review presents information on molecular aspects of the interaction between dietary nutrients and CGRP and their reported and prospective use to improve anti-CGRP therapy in migraine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Dietary pattern may be the determinant of migraine prognosis through various mechanisms such as systemic inflammation, vasodilation, cerebral glucose metabolism, and mitochondrial dysfunction.This study was conducted to examine the relationship of the symptoms and signs of migraine with dietary polyphenols and the phytochemical intake and the quality of the diet. MATERIALS AND METHODS Individuals (n = 90), who were admitted to the headache outpatient clinic due to the diagnosis of episodic migraine, underwent physical examination by a neurologist. Migraine characteristics were assessed using the Migraine Disability Assessment Questionnaire and the Visual Analogue Scale. The Healthy Eating Index-2015 (HEI-2015) was used to evaluate the diet quality of individuals, and the Phytochemical Index developed by McCarty was used to determine the dietary intake of phytochemicals. Phenol-Explorer version 3.6 and the USDA Database for the Flavonoid Content of Selected Foods-Release 3.3 were used to calculate the dietary polyphenol intake. RESULTS Migraine severity was negatively correlated with the intake of phytochemicals and good diet quality (r = -0.37, p = 0.0003; r = -0.37, p = 0.0003, respectively), and with the intake of phenolic components flavanones (r = -0.27, p = 0.01) and lignans (r = -0.27, p = 0.01). With respect to the food groups; migraine severity was found to be inversely correlated with the total phenol intake from olive oil, oil, and fruits (r = -0.26, p = 0.01; r = -0.21, p = 0.04; r = -0.24, p = 0.02, respectively), and the flavonoid intake from olive oil, oil, fruits, and vegetables (r = -0.26, p = 0.01; r = -0.26, p = 0.01; r = -0.35, p = 0.0007; r = -0.22, p = 0.04, respectively). Strikingly, fruit flavanone intake was correlated with low migraine severity (r = -0.39, p = 0.0002), and fruit flavanol intake was correlated with low migraine disability (r = -0.21, p = 0.04). CONCLUSION A high-quality diet rich in phytochemicals and polyphenols (especially flavanones and lignans) is associated with low migraine severity. Lower intake of phenols and flavonoids from vegetable oil, olive oil, fruits, and vegetables were associated with more severe migraine attacks. Examination of migraine characteristics and dietary pattern together with phytochemical and polyphenol intake may guide the development of dietary strategies to be used in migraine patients.

Abstract
Few studies have assessed the association between sodium (Na) and potassium (K) and migraine headaches. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between 24-hour urine Na and K intakes and clinical findings of migraine in an Iranian sample. In this cross-sectional study, 262 participants, aged 20-50 years, were included with a body mass index (BMI) of 18·5-30 kg/m2 and a diagnosis of migraine. One 24-hour urine sample was collected from each subject to estimate the Na and K intakes. The clinical features of migraine, including frequency, duration, severity, Migraine Headache Index Score (MHIS), and Headache Impact Test (HIT) score, were assessed. Besides, a multiple linear regression analysis was performed, and beta estimates and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were reported. Overall, 224 women and 38 men, with a mean age of 36·10 years and BMI of 25·55 kg/m2 comprised our study population. After controlling for potential confounders, the 24-hour urine Na was positively associated with a longer headache duration (β = 0·29; 95% CI: 0·06, 0·53) in the group with the highest urine Na levels as compared to the group with the lowest levels. After adjustments for potential confounders, an increase of 13·05 in the MHIS was observed when the 24-hour urine Na level increased from the first to the third tertile (β = 13·05; 95% CI: 1·70, 24·41). Our findings suggested that a higher 24-hour urine Na level was positively associated with a longer duration of migraine headaches and a higher MHIS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A clinical hallmark of aneurysmal SAH (aSAH) is headache. Little is known about post-aSAH headache factors which may point to underlying mechanisms. In this study, we aimed to characterize the severity and trajectory of headaches in relation to clinical features of patients with aSAH. METHODS This is a retrospective longitudinal study of adult patients admitted to an academic tertiary care center between 2012 and 2019 with aSAH who could verbalize pain scores. Factors recorded included demographics, aneurysm characteristics, analgesia, daily morning serum sodium concentration, and occurrence of vasospasm. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify headache pain trajectories, and clinical factors were compared between trajectories. RESULTS Of 91 patients included in the analysis, mean age was 57 years and 20 (22%) were male. Headache score trajectories clustered into two groups: patients with mild-moderate and moderate-severe pain. Patients in the moderate-severe pain group were younger (P<0.05), received more opioid analgesia (P<0.001), and had lower sodium concentrations (P<0.001) than patients in the mild-moderate pain group. CONCLUSION We identified two distinct post-aSAH headache pain trajectory cohorts and identified an association with age, analgesia, and sodium levels. Future prospective studies considering sodium homeostasis and volume status under standardized analgesic regimens are warranted.

Abstract
Migraine is a complicated brain disorder which affects approximately 12 % of the population, whilst the presence of migraine headaches is typically higher in women than men. Several nutrients are posited to improve headache severity. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary nutrients patterns and intensity and duration of migraine headaches. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 266 women. Physical activity, general characteristics, anthropometric values and dietary intake were collected. Nutrient patterns were derived using principal component analysis with varimax rotation, and based on the correlation matrix, after completing the 147 item semi-quantitative FFQ, we discerned three nutrients patterns. The validated Migraine Disability Assessment (MIDAS) questionnaire and visual analogue scale (VAS) were used for assessing migraine intensity. Duration of headaches were defined as the hours the participants had headache in 1 d in last month. ANOVA, χ2 and linear regression tests were used to interrogate the data. Linear regression showed there was a positive relationship between second pattern rich in vitamin B1, carbohydrate, vitamin B3, vitamin B9, protein, and total fibre and VAS and pain duration. Furthermore, there was an inverse relationship between MIDAS and the first nutrient pattern characterised by dietary Ca, vitamin A, vitamin K, vitamin C, vitamin B6, vitamin B2, and Mg among women. Furthermore, there was a positive significant association between vitamin D and B12 (pattern 3) and headache duration. Dietary nutrients patterns should be monitored closely in individuals suffering with migraine.

Abstract
Background Migraine is a common disorder of the nervous system in China, imposing heavy burdens on individual and societies. Optimal healthcare planning requires understanding the magnitude and changing the trend of migraine incidence in China. However, the secular trend of migraine incidence in China remains unclear. Methods Data were collected from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 in China from 1990 to 2019 to investigate changes in the incidence rate of migraine. The average annual percent change and the relative risk were calculated using the joinpoint regression model and the age–period–cohort model, respectively. Results From 1990 to 2019, the age-standardized incidence rates of migraine in China increased by 0.26% (95% CI: 0.22 to 0.31) and 0.23% (95% CI: 0.19 to 0.28) per year in males and females, respectively. Age effects exerted the most significant impact on migraine incidence. Period effects showed a slightly decreasing trend in the incidence of migraine. In terms of cohort effects, people born after the 1960s presented a higher risk of migraine as compared with the total cohort, with the incidence risk of migraine increasing with birth cohorts. Conclusion Migraine incidence shows an overall increasing trend in China, with a significant gender difference. A comprehensive understanding of the risk characteristics and disease pattern of migraine could allow the early detection of persons with a high risk of developing migraine and promote the development of timely intervention measures to relieve this burden effectively.

Abstract
This paper examines evidence implicating migraine headache as a withdrawal symptom of excessive sodium chloride intake. Emerging research in food addiction posits that food and drug addictions share common features, such as withdrawal symptoms. Salt (sodium chloride) meets the criteria for the diagnosis of substance dependence, including withdrawal in which the substance is used to relieve withdrawal symptoms. The premonitory symptoms of migraine include food cravings for salty foods, which can alleviate migraine pain. Edema, possibly related to large amounts of salt consumed in binge eating, can cause approximately four pounds of retained fluid. This amount of fluid is similar to the fluid retained before the onset of migraine headache, which may be accompanied by polyuria. This paper proposes that inhibited withdrawal from highly processed food intake, rich in salt, mediates an association between increased sodium chloride intake and relief from migraine headache pain. The relief from withdrawal symptoms could also be a mediating factor that explains the controversial findings inversely associating dietary sodium intake with migraine history. Moreover, the withdrawal of retained sodium and edema related to the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may elucidate a potential mechanism in medication overuse headache. Further research is needed to investigate the pain experienced from sodium chloride withdrawal in migraine headache.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate whether migraine is independently associated with tinnitus and subjective hearing loss (HL) in a large national database. METHODS The de-identified 1999 to 2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database was retrospectively queried for subjects aged 18 to 65. HL and tinnitus were subjectively reported by subjects. RESULTS A total of 12,962 subjects (52.9% female) with a mean age of 38.1 ± 14.6 years were included. This consisted of 2,657 (20.5%), 2,344 (18.1%), and 2,582 (19.9%) subjects who had migraine, subjective-HL, and tinnitus, respectively. In patients with tinnitus or subjective-HL, migraine was reported in 35.6% and 24.5%, respectively. Migraineurs were more likely to have subjective-HL (25.0% vs. 16.6%, p < 0.001) and tinnitus (34.6% vs. 16.9%, p < 0.001) compared to the nonmigraineurs. This corresponded to migraine having an odds ratio of 1.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.3-1.7, p < 0.001) and 2.2 (95% CI 2.0-2.4, p < 0.001) for subjective-HL and tinnitus, respectively. After adjusting for confounders, subjective-HL (odds ratio [OR] = 1.2, 95% CI 1.1-1.4, p = 0.003), tinnitus (OR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.9-2.3, p < 0.001), and neck pain (OR = 4.0, 95% CI 3.6-4.5, p < 0.001) were more common in migraineurs. Among migraineurs, a higher proportion of those with tinnitus also had subjective-HL compared to those without tinnitus (40.0% vs. 15.3%, p < 0.001), and a higher proportion of those with subjective-HL also had tinnitus compared to those without HL (58.1% vs. 27.3%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests an independent association between migraine with subjective-HL and tinnitus. Otologic migraine, which is the effects of migraine on the ear, may be partly responsible for the link between HL, tinnitus, neck pain, and migraine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between serum lipids and migraine remains controversial. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to analyze the association between serum lipids and severe headache or migraine in the general population. METHOD Data were collected from a nationally representative sample of participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2004. Interviewers recorded self-reported severe headaches or migraines and whether pain lasted for more than 24 h in three months. A weighted general linear model was used to estimate the association between serum lipids and severe headache or migraine. Regression analyses were performed after adjusting for age, sex, race, energy intake, sodium intake, etc. Subgroup analyses were performed using the same regression model. RESULTS We included 5,937 individuals in the study, with a weighted mean age of 45.8 years. Males accounted for 47.6% of the participants. After adjusting for covariates, a non-significant association was found between migraine and total cholesterol (odds ratio=0.96, 95% confidence interval=0.85, 1.05; P=0.32), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (odds ratio=0.96; 95% confidence interval= 0.75, 1.17, P=0.55), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (odds ratio=0.99; 95% confidence interval=0.49, 1.59, P=0.58) in the continuous form. In subgroup analyses, no significant association was found between total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and self-reported severe headache or migraine. CONCLUSION Total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were not significantly associated with severe headache or migraine in the general American population after adjusting for covariates. The supporting information for measuring common serum lipids in general headaches and migraines is insufficient.

Abstract
This study was conducted to describe the dietary patterns and diet quality and to examine the correlation between diet quality, dietary patterns (Mediterranean or DASH) and migraine attributes. Individuals between the ages of 18-64 who applied to the headache outpatient clinic and were diagnosed with episodic migraine were evaluated by a neurologist. Healthy Eating Index-2010 was used to determine the diet quality. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension compliance scale and Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener were used to describe the dietary patterns. It was found that individuals with a low Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener score had more severe disability and more severe and frequent attacks (p < 0.05). In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener score and attack severity (r = -0.733, p < 0.05). Individuals with a low Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension compliance scale score had more severe and frequent attacks (p < 0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between attack severity and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension compliance scale scores (r = -0.700, p < 0.001). Individuals with poor diet quality had more severe migraine attacks compared to others (p < 0.05). A significant negative correlation was found between diet quality total score and attack severity (r = 0.458, p < 0.05). High diet quality scores and higher vegetables, fruits, legumes, and oil seeds subscores, DASH and Mediterranean dietary patterns were associated with lower migraine attack severity (p < 0.05). A nutritional approach that adopts the Mediterranean diet or involves a good diet quality pattern can help alleviate the symptoms of individuals with migraine.

Abstract
Dietary factors in the etiology of COVID-19 are understudied. High dietary sodium intake leading to sodium toxicity is associated with comorbid conditions of COVID-19 such as hypertension, kidney disease, stroke, pneumonia, obesity, diabetes, hepatic disease, cardiac arrhythmias, thrombosis, migraine, tinnitus, Bell's palsy, multiple sclerosis, systemic sclerosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome. This article synthesizes evidence from epidemiology, pathophysiology, immunology, and virology literature linking sodium toxicological mechanisms to COVID-19 and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Sodium toxicity is a modifiable disease determinant that impairs the mucociliary clearance of virion aggregates in nasal sinuses of the mucosal immune system, which may lead to SARS-CoV-2 infection and viral sepsis. In addition, sodium toxicity causes pulmonary edema associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome, as well as inflammatory immune responses and other symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever and nasal sinus congestion. Consequently, sodium toxicity potentially mediates the association of COVID-19 pathophysiology with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Sodium dietary intake also increases in the winter, when sodium losses through sweating are reduced, correlating with influenza-like illness outbreaks. Increased SARS-CoV-2 infections in lower socioeconomic classes and among people in government institutions are linked to the consumption of foods highly processed with sodium. Interventions to reduce COVID-19 morbidity and mortality through reduced-sodium diets should be explored further.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To highlight the emerging understanding of oxytocin (OT) and oxytocin receptors (OTRs) in modulating menstrual-related migraine (MRM). BACKGROUND MRM is highly debilitating and less responsive to therapy, and attacks are of longer duration than nonmenstrually related migraine. A clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying MRM is lacking. METHODS We present a narrative literature review on the developing understanding of the role of OT and the OTR in MRM. Literature on MRM on PubMed/MEDLINE database including clinical trials and basic science publications was reviewed using specific keywords. RESULTS OT is a cyclically released hypothalamic hormone/neurotransmitter that binds to the OTR resulting in inhibition of trigeminal neuronal excitability that can promote migraine pain including that of MRM. Estrogen regulates OT release as well as expression of the OTR. Coincident with menstruation, levels of both estrogen and OT decrease. Additionally, other serum biochemical factors, including magnesium and cholesterol, which positively modulate the affinity of OT for OTRs, both decrease during menstruation. Thus, during menstruation, multiple menstrually associated factors may lead to decreased circulating OT levels, decreased OT affinity for OTR, and decreased expression of the trigeminal OTR. Consistent with the view of migraine as a threshold disorder, these events may collectively result in decreased inhibition promoting lower thresholds for activation of meningeal trigeminal nociceptors and increasing the likelihood of an MRM attack. CONCLUSION Trigeminal OTR may thus be a novel target for the development of MRM therapeutics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical trials have demonstrated magnesium supplements to be effective for prophylactic treatment of migraine. Dietary magnesium intake of many Americans is known to be below nutritional recommendations, but typical magnesium intake from dietary sources in adults with migraine has not previously been evaluated. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to quantify dietary and total (diet + supplement) magnesium consumption of adults with migraine or severe headache in the United States, and to investigate the relationship between magnesium consumption levels and prevalence of migraine or severe headache. METHODS This analysis included cross-sectional data from 3626 participants, 20- to 50-years old in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2001 and 2004. Presence of migraine or severe headache in the past 3 months was determined by questionnaire. Individuals responding affirmatively were classified as having migraine, and individuals reporting not experiencing migraine or severe headache were classified as controls. Dietary magnesium intake was determined from a 24-hour recall interview, supplemental magnesium intake was determined from the dietary supplements interview, and total magnesium intake was the sum of dietary and supplement intake. RESULTS Mean dietary consumption of magnesium was below the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for both migraine (n = 905) and control groups (n = 2721). Attainment of the RDA through a combination of diet and supplements was associated with lower adjusted odds of migraine (odds ratio [OR] = 0.83, 95% confidence intervals [CIs] = 0.70, 0.99, p = 0.035). Magnesium consumption in the highest quartile (Q) was associated with lower odds of migraine than in the lowest Q for both dietary (OR = 0.76, 95% CI = 0.63, 0.92, p = 0.006) and total (OR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.62, 0.99, p = 0.042) magnesium intake in adjusted models. CONCLUSION These results suggest inadequate consumption of magnesium intake is associated with migraine in U.S. adults ages 20-50. Further prospective investigations are warranted to evaluate the role of dietary magnesium intake on migraine.

Abstract
Migraine is a common neurovascular disorder affecting ~15% of the general population. Ranking second in the list of years lived with disability (YLD), people living with migraine are greatly impacted by this especially burdensome primary headache disorder. In ~30% of individuals with migraine, transient neurological symptoms occur (migraine aura) that further increase migraine burden. However, migraine burden is differential with respect to sex. Though one-year prevalences in childhood are similar, starting with puberty, migraine incidence increases at a much higher rate in females than males. Thus, migraine over the life course occurs in women three to four times more often than in men. Attacks are also more severe in women, leading to greater disability and a longer recovery period. The sex disparity in migraine is believed to be partly mediated through fluctuations in ovarian steroid hormones, especially estrogen and progesterone, although the exact mechanisms are not yet completely understood. The release of the neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), followed by activation of the trigeminovascular system, is thought to play a key role in the migraine pathophysiology. Given the burden of migraine and its disproportionate distribution, the underlying cause(s) for the observed differences between sexes in the incidence, frequency, and intensity of migraine attacks must be better understood. Relevant biological as well as behavioral differences must be taken into account. To evaluate the scope of the existing knowledge on the issue of biological sex as well as gender differences in migraine, we conducted a systematized review of the currently available research. The review seeks to harmonize existing knowledge on the topic across the domains of biological/preclinical, clinical, and population-level research, which are traditionally synthesized and interpreted in isolation. Ultimately, we identify knowledge gaps and set priorities for further interdisciplinary and informed research on sex and gender differences as well as gender-specific therapies in migraine.

Abstract
Expensive and extensive studies on the epidemiology of excessive Na intake and its pathology have been conducted over four decades. The resultant consensus that dietary Na is toxic, as well as the contention that it is less so, ignores the root cause of the attractiveness of salted food. The extant hypotheses are that most Na is infiltrated into our bodies via heavily salted industrialised food without our knowledge and that mere exposure early in life determines lifelong intake. However, these hypotheses are poorly evidenced and are meagre explanations for the comparable salt intake of people worldwide despite their markedly different diets. The love of salt begins at birth for some, vacillates in infancy, climaxes during adolescent growth, settles into separate patterns for men and women in adulthood and, with age, fades for some and persists for others. Salt adds flavour to food. It sustains and protects humans in exertion, may modulate their mood and contributes to their ailments. It may have as yet unknown benefits that may promote its delectability, and it generates controversy. An understanding of the predilection for salt should allow a more evidence-based and effective reduction of the health risks associated with Na surfeit and deficiency. The purpose of this brief review is to show the need for research into the determinants of salt intake by summarising the little we know.

Abstract
Background Migraine is a disabling primary headache disorder often associated with triggers. Diet‐related triggers are a common cause of migraine and certain diets have been reported to decrease the frequency of migraine attacks if dietary triggers or patterns are adjusted. Objective The systematic literature review was conducted to qualitatively summarize evidence from the published literature regarding the role of diet patterns, diet‐related triggers, and diet interventions in people with migraine. Methods A literature search was carried out on diet patterns, diet‐related triggers, and diet interventions used to treat and/or prevent migraine attacks, using an a priori protocol. MEDLINE and EMBASE databases were searched to identify studies assessing the effect of diet, food, and nutrition in people with migraine aged ≥18 years. Only primary literature sources (randomized controlled trials or observational studies) were included and searches were conducted from January 2000 to March 2019. The NICE checklist was used to assess the quality of the included studies of randomized controlled trials and the Downs and Black checklist was used for the assessment of observational studies. Results A total of 43 studies were included in this review, of which 11 assessed diet patterns, 12 assessed diet interventions, and 20 assessed diet‐related triggers. The overall quality of evidence was low, as most of the (68%) studies assessing diet patterns and diet‐related triggers were cross‐sectional studies or patient surveys. The studies regarding diet interventions assessed a variety of diets, such as ketogenic diet, elimination diets, and low‐fat diets. Alcohol and caffeine uses were the most common diet patterns and diet‐related triggers associated with increased frequency of migraine attacks. Most of the diet interventions, such as low‐fat and elimination diets, were related to a decrease in the frequency of migraine attacks. Conclusions There is limited high‐quality randomized controlled trial data on diet patterns or diet‐related triggers. A few small randomized controlled trials have assessed diet interventions in preventing migraine attacks without strong results. Although many patients already reported avoiding personal diet‐related triggers in their migraine management, high‐quality research is needed to confirm the effect of diet in people with migraine.

Abstract
Meniere's disease (MD) is a chronic condition affecting the inner ear whose precise etiology is currently unknown. We propose the hypothesis that MD is a migraine-related phenomenon which may have implications for future treatment options for both diseases. The association between MD and migraine is both an epidemiological and a mechanistic one, with up to 51% of individuals with MD experiencing migraine compared to 12% in the general population. The presence of endolymphatic hydrops in those with MD may be the factor that unites the two conditions, as hydropic inner ears have an impaired ability to maintain homeostasis. Migraine headaches are theorized to cause aura and symptoms via spreading cortical depression that ultimately results in substance P release, alterations in blood flow, and neurogenic inflammation. Chronically hydropic inner ears are less able to auto-regulate against the changes induced by active migraine attacks and may ultimately manifest as MD. This same vulnerability to derangements in homeostasis may also explain the common triggering factors of both MD attacks and migraine headaches, including stress, weather, and diet. Similarly, it may explain the efficacy of common treatments for both diseases: current migraine treatments such as anti-hypertensives and anti-convulsants have shown promise in managing MD. Though the etiology of both MD and migraine is likely multifactorial, further exploration of the association between the two conditions may illuminate how to best manage them in the future. MD is likely a manifestation of cochleovestibular migraine, which occurs as a result of migraine related changes in both the cochlea and vestibule.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Evaluation of MRI-derived cerebral 23Na concentrations in patients with migraine in comparison with healthy controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this case-control study, 24 female migraine patients (mean age, 34 ± 11 years) were enrolled after evaluation of standardized questionnaires. Half (n = 12) of the cohort suffered from migraine, the other half was impaired by both migraine and tension-type headaches (TTH). The combined patient cohort was matched to 12 healthy female controls (mean age, 34 ± 11 years). All participants underwent a cerebral 23Na-magnetic resonance imaging examination at 3.0 T, which included a T1w MP-RAGE sequence and a 3D density-adapted, radial gradient echo sequence for 23Na imaging. Circular regions of interests were placed in predetermined anatomic regions: cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), gray and white matter, brain stem, and cerebellum. External 23Na reference phantoms were used to calculate the total 23Na tissue concentrations. Pearson's correlation, Kendall Tau, and Wilcoxon rank sum test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS 23Na concentrations of all patients in the CSF were significantly higher than in healthy controls (p < 0.001). The CSF of both the migraine and mixed migraine/TTH group showed significantly increased sodium concentrations compared to the control group (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001). Within the patient cohort, a positive correlation between pain level and TSC in the CSF (r = 0.62) could be observed. CONCLUSION MRI-derived cerebral 23Na concentrations in the CSF of migraine patients were found to be statistically significantly higher than in healthy controls. KEY POINTS • Cerebral sodium MRI supports the theory of ionic imbalances and may aid in the challenging pathophysiologic understanding of migraine. • Case-control study shows significantly higher sodium concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid of migraineurs. • Cerebral sodium MRI may become a non-invasive imaging tool for drugs to modulate sodium, and hence migraine, on a molecular level, and influence patient management.
