Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have revealed that an antioxidant diet is a protective factor against migraine. However, the association between zinc, an important antioxidant obtained from the diet, and migraine has received little attention. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between zinc intake with migraine. METHODS The present study used cross-sectional data from individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2004. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline models were performed to explore the association between zinc intake and migraine. RESULTS A total of 9849 adults aged 20 years or older were included in this study. Zinc intake was negatively associated with migraine. Compared to participants in the lowest group of dietary zinc intake Q1 (≤5.93 mg/day), the adjusted ORs for migraine in Q2 (5.94-8.38 mg/day), Q3 (8.39-11.26 mg/day), Q4 (11.27-15.75 mg/day), and Q5 (≥15.76 mg/day) were 0.73 (95% CI: 0.60-0.89, p = 0.004), 0.72 (95% CI: 0.55-0.95, p = 0.02), 0.76 (95% CI: 0.58-0.99, p = 0.04) and 0.73 (95% CI: 0.50-1.05, p = 0.08), respectively. Our findings also suggested an interaction between zinc intake and age (P for interaction = 0.007). Additionally, the relationship between zinc intake and migraine in adults with 20-50 years was non-linear. CONCLUSIONS A higher zinc intake is significantly associated with a decreased prevalence of migraine, and age can modify the association between them.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The primary objective of this study was to find the association between dietary zinc intake and the prevalence of olfactory disorders using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using the 2013-2014 NHANES data. A linear regression model was constructed with dietary zinc intake as the independent variable and olfactory dysfunction as the dependent variable. Initially, in the unadjusted model, weighted logistic regression analysis was carried out for continuous variables, and stratified analysis was conducted for categorical variables. Subsequently, three models were created to perform subgroup analysis by adjusting for different confounding factors, further investigating the relationship between dietary zinc intake and olfactory dysfunction. Finally, restricted cubic spline (RCS) models adjusting for all confounding factors were utilized to study the nonlinear associations of age and dietary zinc intake with olfactory dysfunction and their relevant thresholds. RESULTS A total of 2958 samples were analyzed in this study. Weighted logistic regression analysis displayed a negative relationship between dietary zinc intake and the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in the population of non-Hispanic whites and other Hispanics, as well as in individuals with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2 (OR < 1, P < 0.05). The P values for the multiplicative interaction terms adjusting for all confounding factors were not significant (P for interaction > 0.05). In the three regression models adjusting for different confounding factors, dietary zinc intake was significantly negatively related to olfactory dysfunction in all populations (Crude: OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.44-0.91; Model I: OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.38-0.90; Model II: OR 0.59, 95% CI 0.35-1.00). Subgroup analysis based on BMI showed a remarkable negative relationship between dietary zinc intake and olfactory dysfunction in the group with BMI of 25-30 kg/m2 (Crude: OR 0.50, 95% CI 0.28-0.90, P = 0.012; Model I: OR 0.49, 95% CI 0.24-1.00, P = 0.021) and the group with BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 (Crude: OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.33-0.92, P = 0.013; Model I: OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.29-0.88, P = 0.005; Model II: OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.29-0.91, P = 0.004). RCS analysis revealed a remarkable nonlinear association of age and dietary zinc intake with olfactory dysfunction (P-non-linear < 0.05). The prevalence of olfactory dysfunction was considerably higher in individuals aged 60 and above compared to those under 60 years old. Daily dietary zinc intake within the range of 9.60-17.45 mg was a protective factor for olfactory dysfunction, while intake outside this range increased the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction. CONCLUSION Daily dietary zinc intake within the range of 9.60-17.45 mg has a protective effect against olfactory dysfunction. Intake outside this range increases the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction. The prevalence of olfactory dysfunction is significantly higher in individuals aged 60 and above compared to those under 60 years old. For individuals with a BMI of 25-30 kg/m2 and a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2, dietary zinc intake is negatively correlated with olfactory dysfunction. Therefore, it is recommended that these populations increase their dietary zinc intake to develop healthier lifestyles and maintain olfactory health.

Abstract
PURPOSE Zinc is an essential micronutrient involving in multiple enzymatic reactions of human metabolism and biological functions affecting the cancer development. However, the relationship between dietary zinc intake and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk has been unclear. Herein, our study investigated the relationship between dietary zinc intake and CRC risk, and examined how the SLC30A8 rs3802177 genetic variant affects this association. METHODS A total of 1431 CRC cases and 2704 controls were selected to investigate the relationship between dietary zinc intake and CRC risk. After excluding individuals without genotype data, 1097 CRC cases and 1559 controls were used to evaluate the interaction between dietary zinc intake and the rs3802177 polymorphism in CRC risk. The odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were measured using unconditional logistic regression models. RESULTS Higher dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with the risk of CRC in the total population [adjusted OR (aOR) = 0.80, 95% CI 0.66-0.96, p for trend = 0.018]. In the codominant model, G+ carriers of the SLC30A8 rs3802177 with higher consumption of zinc were observed to have a significantly lower risk of CRC in all participants (p for interaction = 0.020). In females, GG carriers with higher zinc intake showed a stronger protective effect against the development of CRC (p for interaction = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS In summary, our findings suggest an inverse association between dietary zinc intake and CRC risk, and this relationship may be modified by SLC30A8 rs3802177 polymorphism.

Abstract
Clinical studies on the relationship between pesticide exposure at home and infertility in the general population are scarce. Whether the antioxidant nutrients or other health-related factors affect the pesticide-infertility relationship remains unknown. This nationwide study screened 29,400 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys conducted between 2013 and 2018. The participants were subdivided according to dietary zinc intake based on the recommended dietary allowances as the low-zinc and high-zinc groups (< 8 and ≥ 8 mg/day, respectively), and according to body mass index (BMI; cut-off 28 kg/m2) as the low-BMI and high-BMI groups. Participants who were exposed to pesticides at home had an increased risk of infertility (odds ratio [OR] = 1.56, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: 1.06-2.29). The incidence of infertility differed in low-zinc and high-zinc groups (OR, 95% CI: 2.38, 1.40-4.06 vs. 0.98, 0.53-1.79, respectively), indicating an interaction between pesticide exposure and zinc intake in households (P = 0.047), which suggests that a zinc-rich diet may reduce the risk of pesticide-induced infertility. Similarly, the relationship between pesticide exposure and infertility risk differed in the low-BMI and high-BMI groups (OR, 95% CI: 0.90, 0.42-1.93 vs. 2.23, 1.39-3.58, respectively; P = 0.045), suggesting that high BMI may intensify the infertility risk caused by pesticide exposure. These new findings reveal the antagonistic and synergistic effect of zinc and obesity, respectively, in pesticide-induced infertility risk and suggest that individuals who are obese and on a low-zinc diet may be more susceptible to infertility induced by household pesticide exposure.

Abstract
PURPOSE Zinc is considered protective against atherosclerosis; however, the association between dietary zinc intake and cardiovascular disease remains debated. We investigated whether dietary zinc intake was associated with coronary artery calcium (CAC) progression in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). METHODS This analysis included 5186 participants aged 61.9 ± 10.2 years (48.8% men; 41.3% white, 25.0% black, 21.6% Hispanic, and 12.1% Chinese American) from the MESA. Dietary zinc intake was assessed by a self-administered, 120-item food frequency questionnaire at baseline (2000-2002). Baseline and follow-up CAC were measured by computed tomography. CAC progression was defined as CAC > 0 at follow-up for participants with CAC = 0 at baseline; and an annualized change of 10 or percent change of ≥ 10% for those with 0 < CAC < 100 or CAC ≥ 100 at baseline, respectively. RESULTS Dietary zinc intake was 8.4 ± 4.5 mg/day and 2537 (48.9%) of the included participants had CAC at baseline. Over a median follow-up of 3.4 years (25th-75th percentiles = 2.0-9.1 years), 2704 (52.1%) participants had CAC progression. In the fully adjusted model, higher dietary zinc was associated with a lower risk of CAC progression in both men (hazard ratio [HR] 0.697, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.553-0.878; p = 0.002) and women (HR 0.675; 95% CI 0.496-0.919; p = 0.012, both comparing extreme groups). Furthermore, such an inverse association was attributable to dietary zinc intake from non-red meat (p < 0.05), rather than red meat sources (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In this multiethnic population free of clinically apparent cardiovascular disease, higher dietary zinc intake from non-red meat sources was independently associated with a lower risk of CAC progression. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association between zinc intake and the risk of kidney stones remains controversial. We examined the associations between dietary zinc intake, supplemental zinc intake and serum zinc levels and the prevalence of kidney stones in adults. METHODS Adult participants from the 2007-2016 NHANES were included. Restricted cubic splines were adopted to assess the dose-response relationships. RESULTS Dietary zinc intake was linearly associated with the prevalence of kidney stones (Pfor non-linearity = 0.50), and the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of kidney stones were 0.75 (0.51-1.04) for 10 mg/day, 0.65 (0.39-0.97) for 20 mg/day, 0.53 (0.30-0.94) for 30 mg/day and 0.45 (0.22-0.95) for 40 mg/day. The linear relationship was also observed among women and overweight/obese individuals. No association was found between supplemental zinc intake and the prevalence of kidney stones. A non-linear relationship was found between serum zinc levels and the prevalence of kidney stones (Pfor non-linearity = 0.02), and the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of kidney stones were 0.52 (0.33-0.82) for 70 ug/dL, 0.43 (0.24-0.77) for 90 ug/dL, 0.56 (0.32-0.98) for 110 ug/dL and 0.77 (0.37-1.62) for 130 ug/dL. The non-linear relationship was also observed among men and overweight/obese individuals. CONCLUSIONS Dietary zinc intake and serum zinc levels were inversely associated with the prevalence of kidney stones in adults, and there may be effect modification by participant sex and body mass index. The present analysis is limited in its ability to establish causality.

Abstract
Previous reports have suggested a potential association on dietary zinc intake with the risk of pancreatic cancer. Since the associations between different studies were controversial, we therefore conducted a meta-analysis to reassess the relationship between dietary zinc intake and pancreatic cancer risk. A comprehensive search from the databases of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Medline was performed until January 31, 2017. Relative risk (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) derived by using random effect model was used. Sensitivity analysis and publication bias were conducted. Our meta-analysis was based on seven studies involving 1659 cases, including two prospective cohort studies and five case–control studies. The total RR of pancreatic cancer risk for the highest versus the lowest categories of dietary zinc intake was 0.798 (0.621–0.984), with its significant heterogeneity among studies (I2=58.2%, P=0.026). The average Newcastle–Ottawa scale (NOS) score was 7.29, suggesting a high quality. There was no publication bias in the meta-analysis about dietary zinc intake on the risk of pancreatic cancer. Subgroup analyses showed that dietary zinc intake could reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer in case–control studies and among American populations. In conclusion, we found that highest category of dietary zinc intake can significantly reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer, especially among American populations.
