Abstract
OBJECTIVES Conventional nodular gastritis has been known to be caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Several cases of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma with non-H. pylori Helicobacters (NHPH) exhibit endoscopic findings resembling nodular gastritis. Considering the differences in malignancy, distinguishing between these two conditions is crucial. This study aimed to identify the distinguishing endoscopic features of NHPH-induced gastric MALT lymphoma with nodular gastritis-like appearance (NHPHi-MNG) and H.-induced conventional nodular gastritis (HPi-NG). METHODS Between 2011 and 2022, we analyzed 17 patients with NHPHi-MNG and 50 patients with HPi-NG at Hiroshima University Hospital and evaluated nodule morphology and distribution patterns. RESULTS Compared with the HPi-NG group, the NHPHi-MNG group exhibited significantly larger nodules (2.5 vs. 2.0 mm, P < 0.05) with protruded morphology (protruded/superficial, elevated: 14/3 vs. 8/42, P < 0.05), most prominently in the gastric angulus. The variability in nodule size was significantly higher in the NHPHi-MNG group than in the HPi-NG group (0.85 vs. 0.37 mm, P < 0.05), reflecting nodule heterogeneity. The distance from the gastric angulus to the proximal end of the nodular lesions was significantly greater in the NHPHi-MNG group than in the HPi-NG group (4.4 vs. 1.7 cm, P < 0.05). The nodules in the HPi-NG group were smaller, superficial, elevated, and most prominent in the gastric antrum compared with those in the NHPHi-MNG group. They were predominantly distributed in the gastric antrum with a homogeneous morphology. CONCLUSION NHPHi-MNG and HPi-NG can be endoscopically differentiated according to nodule morphology and distribution. Recognizing these distinguishing features is essential for an accurate diagnosis.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori eradication is effective for the regression of gastric hyperplastic polyps (GHPs). We report a case which demonstrated an enlargement of GHPs after H. pylori eradication. The patient, who received long-term proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy, lived with a dog, a natural host of Helicobacter heilmanii sensu stricto. Gastric colonization with Helicobacter heilmannii s.s. was observed after H. pylori eradication, thus suggesting the involvement of non-H. pylori Helicobacter species (NHPHs) infection for the enlargement of GHPs, in addition to the proliferative effects of PPI use on the gastric epithelium. Screening for NHPHs may be necessary in dog lovers to avoid paradoxical responses to H. pylori eradication.

Abstract
This study investigated the role of causative infectious agents in ulceration of the non-glandular part of the porcine stomach (pars oesophagea). In total, 150 stomachs from slaughter pigs were included, 75 from pigs that received a meal feed, 75 from pigs that received an equivalent pelleted feed with a smaller particle size. The pars oesophagea was macroscopically examined after slaughter. (q)PCR assays for H. suis, F. gastrosuis and H. pylori-like organisms were performed, as well as 16S rRNA sequencing for pars oesophagea microbiome analyses. All 150 pig stomachs showed lesions. F. gastrosuis was detected in 115 cases (77%) and H. suis in 117 cases (78%), with 92 cases (61%) of co-infection; H. pylori-like organisms were detected in one case. Higher infectious loads of H. suis increased the odds of severe gastric lesions (OR = 1.14, p = 0.038), while the presence of H. suis infection in the pyloric gland zone increased the probability of pars oesophageal erosions [16.4% (95% CI 0.6-32.2%)]. The causal effect of H. suis was mediated by decreased pars oesophageal microbiome diversity [-1.9% (95% CI - 5.0-1.2%)], increased abundances of Veillonella and Campylobacter spp., and decreased abundances of Lactobacillus, Escherichia-Shigella, and Enterobacteriaceae spp. Higher infectious loads of F. gastrosuis in the pars oesophagea decreased the odds of severe gastric lesions (OR = 0.8, p = 0.0014). Feed pelleting had no significant impact on the prevalence of severe gastric lesions (OR = 1.72, p = 0.28). H. suis infections are a risk factor for ulceration of the porcine pars oesophagea, probably mediated through alterations in pars oesophageal microbiome diversity and composition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical, endoscopic, histologic, and treatment outcomes of Helicobacter heilmannii (H. heilmannii) associated gastritis in children in the New England region of the United States. METHODS Retrospective study of children (1-18 years) with H. heilmannii identified on gastric mucosal biopsies from two pediatric centers over a 21-year period, January 2000-December 2021. Cases were identified by querying pathology databases at each institution. Demographic and clinical data were obtained from the medical record. Endoscopic and histologic findings were extracted from endoscopy and pathology reports, respectively. RESULTS Thirty-eight children were diagnosed with H. heilmannii-associated gastritis during the study period. The mean age at diagnosis was 10.1 ± 5.3 years, and 25/38 (66%) cases were male. Abdominal pain (32%) and nausea with or without vomiting (26%) were the most common symptoms. Thirty-two children (84%) had endoscopic findings including gastric nodularity (55%) and erythema (26%). All children had histologic signs of chronic gastritis, including those with normal endoscopic exams. Antibiotic regimens used for treating Helicobacter pylori were frequently prescribed. Of the 17 children who underwent a follow-up endoscopy (range 2-68 months), 15 (88%) did not have H. heilmannii identified on gastric biopsies. CONCLUSION H. heilmannii was an infrequent but potential cause of epigastric abdominal pain and nausea in our cohort of New England children. While morphologically distinct from H. pylori, the bacteria can result in similar endoscopic and histologic findings of nodularity and chronic gastritis, respectively. The rate of eradication, as assessed by histology following treatment with H. pylori therapies, was below the 90% recommended goal for antimicrobial therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) has recently been linked to various gastric diseases. However, the relationship between NHPH infection and gastric cancer remains controversial. This study aimed to identify the effect of NHPH infection on gastritis and gastric cancer development. MATERIALS AND METHODS Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues were obtained from 73 patients with gastric cancer, of whom 21 cases were Helicobacter pylori (Hp) current infection, 37 cases were Hp previous infection, and 15 cases were Hp naïve infection, and were screened for NPHPs using polymerase chain reaction. The results were compared with NHPH infection rates in the patients with gastritis-related diseases reported in the previous study. We evaluated the association of NHPH infection with gastritis and clinicopathological features of gastric cancer. RESULTS NHPH infection rates were 4/21 (19%) in "Hp current" patients, 4/37 (11%) in "Hp previous" infection patients, and 1/15 (7%) in "Hp naïve" patients, showing no significant difference in infection rates based on Hp infection status. NHPH infection rates in gastric cancer patients were similar to those in the patients with gastritis-related diseases reported in the previous study. A comparison of NHPH-positive and negative patients showed no significant differences in atrophic gastritis status, serum gastritis markers, or clinicopathological characteristics of gastric cancer, such as localization, size, gross type, differentiation, or depth. CONCLUSIONS The association between gastric cancer and NHPH infection would have important implications for gastric cancer prevention, diagnostics, and treatment, however, no significant association was found in this particular population.

Abstract
While seven gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species are known to commonly colonize the stomach of cats and dogs, the potential of H. pylori and H. pylori-like organisms to infect animals remains controversial and was investigated in this study using gastric samples of 20 cats and 27 dogs. A Helicobacter genus-specific 16 S rRNA PCR assay, H. pylori-specific ureAB and glmM PCR assays and a nested PCR detecting 23 S rRNA in a Helicobacter genus-specific manner in a first round of PCR and a H. pylori-specific manner in a second round, were performed in combination with sequencing. Histopathological and anti-Helicobacter immunohistochemical evaluations were also performed. Based on 16 S rRNA sequence analysis, 39/47 animals (83%) appeared infected with canine/feline gastric NHPHs in the corpus and/or antrum. H. pylori-specific ureAB amplicons were obtained in samples of 22 stomachs (47%). One canine antrum sample positive in the ureAB assay was also positive in the H. pylori-specific glmM assay. While 36/47 (77%) animals had a positive sample in the first round of the nested 23 S rRNA PCR assay, all samples were negative in the second round. Sequence analysis of obtained amplicons and immunohistochemistry point towards the presence of unidentified H. pylori-like organisms in cats and dogs. Histopathological examination suggests a low pathogenic significance of the gastric Helicobacter spp. present in these animals. In conclusion, cats and dogs may be (co-)infected with gastric Helicobacter organisms other than the known gastric NHPHs. Culture and isolation should be performed to confirm this hypothesis.

Abstract
Marginal zone lymphomas rank as the third most prevalent form of non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma, trailing behind diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and follicular lymphoma. Gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma (GML) is a low-grade B-cell neoplasia frequently correlated with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-induced chronic gastritis. On the other hand, a specific subset of individuals diagnosed with GML does not exhibit H. pylori infection. In contrast to its H. pylori-positive counterpart, it was previously believed that H. pylori-negative GML was less likely to respond to antimicrobial therapy. Despite this, surprisingly, in-creasing evidence supports that a considerable proportion of patients with H. pylori-negative GML show complete histopathological remission after bacterial eradication therapy. Nonetheless, the precise mechanisms underlying this treatment responsiveness are not yet fully comprehended. In recent years, there has been growing interest in investigating the role of non-H. pylori gastric helicobacters (NHPHs) in the pathogenesis of H. pylori-negative GML. However, additional research is required to establish the causal relationship between NHPHs and GML. In this minireview, we examined the current understanding and proposed prospects on the involvement of NHPHs in H. pylori-negative GML, as well as their potential response to bacterial eradication therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacters (NHPH) naturally colonize the stomach of animals. In humans, infection with these bacteria is associated with chronic active gastritis, peptic ulceration and MALT-lymphoma. H. bizzozeronii belongs to these NHPH and its prevalence in children is unknown. CASE PRESENTATION This case report describes for the first time a NHPH infection in a 20-month-old girl with severe gastric disorders in Mexico. The patient suffered from melena, epigastric pain, and bloating. Gastroscopy showed presence of a Hiatus Hill grade I, a hemorrhagic gastropathy in the fundus and gastric body, and a Forrest class III ulcer in the fundus. Histopathologic examination revealed a chronic active gastritis with presence of long, spiral-shaped bacilli in the glandular lumen. Biopsies from antrum, body and incisure were negative for presence of H. pylori by culture and PCR, while all biopsies were positive for presence of H. bizzozeronii by PCR. Most likely, infection occurred through intense contact with the family dog. The patient received a triple therapy consisting of a proton pump inhibitor, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin for 14 days, completed with sucralfate for 6 weeks, resulting in the disappearance of her complaints. CONCLUSION The eradication could not be confirmed, although it was suggested by clear improvement of symptoms. This case report further emphasizes the zoonotic importance of NHPH. It can be advised to routinely check for presence of both H. pylori and NHPH in human patients with gastric complains.

Abstract
Although radiotherapy is the standard treatment for Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-negative gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, eradication therapy using antibiotics and an acid secretion suppressor can sometimes induce complete remission. We explored predictive markers for the response to eradication therapy for gastric MALT lymphoma that were negative for both API2-MALT1 and Hp infection using comprehensive RNA sequence analysis. Among 164 gastric MALT lymphoma patients who underwent eradication therapy as primary treatment, 36 were negative for both the API2-MALT1 fusion gene and Hp infection. Based on eradication therapy efficacy, two groups were established: complete response (CR) and no change (NC). The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis showed that cancer-related genes and infection-related genes were highly expressed in the NC and CR groups, respectively. Based on this finding and transcription factor, gene ontology enrichment, and protein-protein interaction analyses, we selected 16 candidate genes for predicting eradication therapy efficacy. Real-time PCR validation in 36 Hp-negative patients showed significantly higher expression of olfactomedin-4 (OLFM4) and the Nanog homeobox (NANOG) in the CR and NC groups, respectively. OLFM4 and NANOG could be positive and negative predictive markers, respectively, for eradication therapy efficacy against gastric MALT lymphoma that is negative for both API2-MALT1 and Hp infection.

Abstract
A 45-year-old Japanese man underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, which revealed spotty redness at the gastric fornix, mucosal swelling, diffuse redness in the corpus, and mucosal atrophy in the gastric angle and antrum. Histological examination showed rod-shaped bacteria that appeared larger than Helicobacter pylori. The patient tested positive for rapid urease test, and serum anti-H. pylori IgG antibody test results were negative. Further examination of the bacteria revealed that H. suis antibody test was positive, and the presence of H. suis was confirmed using H. suis-specific real-time PCR. H. suis was successfully eradicated after triple therapy with vonoprazan, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin. This case reinforces the notion that non-H. pylori Helicobacter species such as H. suis and H. heilmannii may be involved in the pathogenesis of active gastritis in patients who test negative for H. pylori antibodies.

Abstract
This article focuses on the pathogenic significance of Helicobacter species naturally colonizing the stomach of dogs, cats and pigs. These gastric "non-Helicobacter (H.) pylori Helicobacter species" (NHPH) are less well-known than the human adapted H. pylori. Helicobacter suis has been associated with gastritis and decreased daily weight gain in pigs. Several studies also attribute a role to this pathogen in the development of hyperkeratosis and ulceration of the non-glandular stratified squamous epithelium of the pars oesophagea of the porcine stomach. The stomach of dogs and cats can be colonized by several Helicobacter species but their pathogenic significance for these animals is probably low. Helicobacter suis as well as several canine and feline gastric Helicobacter species may also infect humans, resulting in gastritis, peptic and duodenal ulcers, and low-grade mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. These agents may be transmitted to humans most likely through direct or indirect contact with dogs, cats and pigs. Additional possible transmission routes include consumption of water and, for H. suis, also consumption of contaminated pork. It has been described that standard H. pylori eradication therapy is usually also effective to eradicate the NHPH in human patients, although acquired antimicrobial resistance may occasionally occur and porcine H. suis strains are intrinsically less susceptible to aminopenicillins than non-human primate H. suis strains and other gastric Helicobacter species. Virulence factors of H. suis and the canine and feline gastric Helicobacter species include urease activity, motility, chemotaxis, adhesins and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. These NHPH, however, lack orthologs of cytotoxin-associated gene pathogenicity island and vacuolating cytotoxin A, which are major virulence factors in H. pylori. It can be concluded that besides H. pylori, gastric Helicobacter species associated with dogs, cats and pigs are also clinically relevant in humans. Although recent research has provided better insights regarding pathogenic mechanisms and treatment strategies, a lot remains to be investigated, including true prevalence rates, exact modes of transmission and molecular pathways underlying disease development and progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We have previously reported that eradication therapy was more effective against Helicobacter pylori (Hp)-negative gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma in non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH)-positive cases than in NHPH-negative cases and that the infection status of NHPH could be a predictive marker for the efficacy of eradication therapy for H. pylori negative gastric MALT lymphoma. However, a diagnostic test for NHPH infection has not yet been clinically established. In this study, we investigated the endoscopic findings in cases of H. suis-infected gastritis associated with gastric MALT lymphoma reported at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS Participants were selected from cases of gastric MALT lymphoma who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy at Hiroshima University Hospital, who were negative for the API2-MALT1 gene, and who received eradication therapy as a first-line treatment. We examined the endoscopic findings in nine cases from this group in which H. suis infection was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Endoscopic findings, such as cracked mucosa, spotty redness, nodular gastritis-like appearance, and white marbled appearance, which have been reported as characteristics of NHPH gastritis, were observed in multiple cases. The most common endoscopic findings in this study were cracked mucosa (7/9 cases), followed by spotty redness (6/9 cases), nodular gastritis-like appearance (5/9 cases), and white marbled appearance (2/9 cases). CONCLUSIONS Our study may serve as a reference for re-evaluation of the diagnostic criteria for H. suis infection and indications for eradication therapy, particularly for cases of H. pylori negative gastric MALT lymphoma, where endoscopic findings such as those seen in this study were observed in the background mucosa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical relevance of Helicobacter heilmannii (H. heilmannii) infection in patients with upper gastrointestinal diseases is not yet fully understood. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical, endoscopic, histopathological, and therapeutic features of H. heilmannii. METHODS To retrieve the relevant studies, we conducted a comprehensive systematic search of global databases such as the ISI Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar. After confirming the studies based on the inclusion criteria statistical analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. RESULTS In our study, the prevalence of infection with H. heilmannii was measured at 1.9% (95% CI: 0.8-4.2). The prevalence of H. heilmannii in Asian population was higher than Western countries (3.1% vs. 1.2%, respectively). Interestingly, the frequency of coinfection with both H. pylori and H. heilmannii was 15.4% (95% CI: 5.2-37.6). The most common endoscopic findings were chronic gastritis, hyperplasia, and erosion. In addition, our results showed that in people infected with this bacterium, gastric inflammation is typically chronic, focal, and less active than Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) gastritis. Conventional treatment of H. pylori can lead to the eradication of H. heilmannii. CONCLUSION In general, H. heilmannii infection is significantly associated with mild chronic gastritis and can be treated with standard anti-H. pylori treatment.

Abstract
Genetic analysis and culturing techniques for gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) are progressing. NHPH is reported to accompany nodular gastritis, gastric MALT lymphoma, and mild gastritis. However, only a few gastric cancer cases infected by NHPH have been reported. PCR analysis specific for NHPH and H. pylori was performed for DNA from gastric mucosa of 282 Korean gastric cancer patients, who were treated with endoscopic submucosal dissection. For more precise strain detection of NHPH, NHPH-positive mucosa was stained by immunohistochemistry specific for Helicobacter suis. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) classification was analyzed for these 3 gastric cancer sub-groups by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. Among 281 patients, 3 patients (1.1%) were positive for NHPH. One patient (Patient 1) was also positive for H. pylori by PCR, another patient (Patient 3) was positive for serum IgG for H. pylori, and the other patient (Patient 2) had no evidence for H. pylori infection. Gastric mucosa of Patients 2 and 3 were positive for H. suis staining. All three NHPH-positive gastric cancers were located in the antrum, and belonged to the Chromosomal Instability Type of TCGA classification. Gastric NHPH can be a cause of gastric cancer, although likely with lower pathogenesis than H. pylori.

Abstract
Helicobacter canis, an enterohepatic Helicobacter, has proven its role in human diseases and has been rediscussed in recent years as its zoonotic potential is increasingly described. Routine microbiological detection of this pathogen is a difficult task as its culture may fail due to fastidious growth. It is therefore supposed that many clinical laboratories under-recognize H. canis infections. A review of all clinical and microbiological literature currently available from previous relevant H. canis human clinical cases, mainly bacteremia, added with a clinical case observed at the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, was performed. Clinical features of H. canis reports show the presence of underlying clinical conditions in 89% of the cases, bacteremia in 83%, associated fever in 58%, and recent close contact with pets in 83%, especially dogs. The observed microbiological trends from 10 cases of bacteremia were a median of 4 days until positive blood culture bottle detection, subcultures showing a thin layer of small colonies under microaerophilic atmosphere at 35–42°C after 3–4 days of growth, and an identification requiring 16S rRNA sequencing given the difficulties observed with MALDI-TOF MS. Low MICs were observed for penicillins, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, carbapenems, and metronidazole in opposition to high MICs for ciprofloxacin. A frequent association of H. canis and bacteremia in immunocompromised patients with recurrent fever in contact with pets, especially dogs, was identified. Considering the fastidious growing capacities, final identification from blood cultures may not be expected before 7 days. Intravenous ceftriaxone, oral doxycycline, or metronidazole has been suggested as efficient therapeutic choices.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (HP)-unrelated mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma includes the majority of extragastric MALT lymphomas and a small proportion of gastric MALT lymphomas. Although the role of first-line antibiotics in treating HP-negative gastric MALT lymphomas remains controversial, HP eradication therapy (HPE)-like regimens may result in approximately 20-30% complete remission (CR) for patients with localized HP-negative gastric MALT lymphoma. In these patients, H. heilmannii, H. bizzozeronii, and H. suis were detected in sporadic gastric biopsy specimens. Extragastric MALT lymphoma is conventionally treated with radiotherapy for localized disease and systemic chemotherapy for advanced and metastatic diseases. However, a proportion of extragastric MALT lymphomas, such as ocular adnexal lesions and small intestinal lesions, were reported to be controlled by antibiotics for Chlamydophila psittaci and Campylobacter jejuni, respectively. Some extragastric MALT lymphomas may even respond to first-line HPE. These findings suggest that some antibiotic-responsive tumors may exist in the family of HP-negative MALT lymphomas. Two mechanisms underlying the antibiotic responsiveness of HP-negative MALT lymphoma have been proposed. First, an HPE-like regimen may eradicate the antigens of unknown bacteria. Second, clarithromycin (the main component of HPE) may have direct or indirect antineoplastic effects, thus contributing to the CR of these tumors. For antibiotic-unresponsive HP-negative MALT lymphoma, high-dose macrolides and immunomodulatory drugs, such as thalidomide and lenalidomide, have reported sporadic success. Further investigation of new treatment regimens is warranted.

Abstract
The genus Helicobacter is composed of bacteria that colonize both the human and animal gastrointestinal tract. Helicobacter pylori infects half of the world’s population, causing various disorders, such as gastritis, duodenitis and gastric cancer. Additionally, non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species (NHPH) are commonly found in the stomach of pigs, dogs and cats. Most of these species have zoonotic potential and prevalence rates of 0.2–6.0%, and have been described in human patients suffering from gastric disorders undergoing a gastric biopsy. The aim of this study was to determine the occurrence of Helicobacter spp. in the stomach of patients with gastric cancer (n = 17) and obese (n = 63) patients. Furthermore, the outcome of the Helicobacter eradication treatment and the current infection status was evaluated. Overall, based on the genus-specific PCR followed by sequencing, DNA from Helicobacter spp. was detected in 46.3% of the patients, including single infections with H. pylori in 43.8% of the patients and mixed infections with H. pylori and canine- or feline-associated H. felis in 2.5%. About 32.5% of the patients had been subjected to previous Helicobacter eradication therapy and the triple standard therapy was the most frequent scheme (42.3%). In 48.0% of the patients who received eradication treatment, bacteria were still detected, including one mixed infection. In 23.1% of the patients who reported that a subsequent test had been performed to confirm the elimination of the bacteria, Helicobacter were still detected. In conclusion, although in a smaller percentage, NHPH may also be present in the human stomach. Thus, specific NHPH screening should be included in the diagnostic routine. The continued presence of H. pylori in the stomach of patients recently subjected to eradication schemes raises questions about the efficacy of the current Helicobacter treatments.

Abstract
With the recent upsurge of studies in the field of microbiology, we have learned more about the complexity of the gastrointestinal microecosystem. More than 30 genera and 1000 species of gastrointestinal microflora have been found. The structure of the normal microflora is relatively stable, and is in an interdependent and restricted dynamic equilibrium with the body. In recent years, studies have shown that there is a potential relationship between gastrointestinal microflora imbalance and gastric cancer (GC) and precancerous lesions. So, restoring the balance of gastrointestinal microflora is of great significance. Moreover, intervention in gastric premalignant condition (GPC), also known as precancerous lesion of gastric cancer (PLGC), has been the focus of current clinical studies. The holistic view of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is consistent with the microecology concept, and oral TCM can play a two-way regulatory role directly with the microflora in the digestive tract, restoring the homeostasis of gastrointestinal microflora to prevent canceration. However, large gaps in knowledge remain to be addressed. This review aims to provide new ideas and a reference for clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM There are only a few reports of non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) gastritis in Japanese patients. We aimed to examine its prevalence, clinical features, and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) findings based on 50 patients encountered in one facility. MATERIALS AND METHODS Subjects were all patients who had undergone gastric mucosal biopsy endoscopically at Kenwakai Hospital for approximately 10 years. NHPH infection was diagnosed by microscopic findings of Giemsa staining performed on all specimens. PCR analysis of urease genes was performed to detect and identify NHPH, when informed consent was obtained. Helicobacter pylori-diagnostic tests were also performed. NHPH-infected patients were questioned about symptoms and animal contact. RESULTS NHPH gastritis was found in 50 of 3847 patients (1.30%). The percentage increased to 3.35% (30 of 896 patients) in the latter 2 years and 4 months with increasing recognition of its characteristic endoscopic findings by endoscopists. PCR analysis, performed in 30 patients, detected NHPH in 28 patients: 26 as Helicobacter suis and 2 as Helicobacter heilmanii/Helicobacter ailurogastricus. Helicobacter pylori-diagnostic tests were almost negative. However, anti-H. pylori antibody showed high-negative titer (3.0-9.9 U/ml) in 12. Of 50 patients (consisting of 49 men and 1 woman), almost all were asymptomatic, and 25 were keeping pets. Regarding EGD findings, in all 50 patients, "crack-like mucosa" and/or nodular gastritis was noted in gastric antrum, and regular arrangement of collecting venules (RAC) was noted in gastric corpus. None of the patients infected with NHPH were co-infected with H. pylori. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence was finally estimated to be approximately 3.35%. Helicobacter suis was the most common NHPH species. "Crack-like mucosa" and/or nodular gastritis in gastric antrum, RAC in gastric corpus, and H. pylori-negativity by H. pylori-diagnostic tests especially containing a high-negative titer of anti-H. pylori antibody may indicate NHPH infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eradication therapy is known to be effective against Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric MALT lymphoma but predicting the efficacy of eradication therapy against Helicobacter pylori-negative gastric MALT lymphoma is difficult. Recent reports have shown that non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections induce gastric MALT lymphoma, and we aimed to clarify whether non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections are associated with the efficacy of eradication therapy. METHODS We analyzed eradication therapy as a first-line treatment for 182 cases of gastric MALT lymphoma, classified according to Helicobacter pylori infection and API2-MALT1 mutation status. We also evaluated the non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infection status in 29 Helicobacter pylori-negative cases via PCR with DNA extracted from paraffin-embedded biopsy tissues. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infection status and eradication therapy outcome. RESULTS The API2-MALT1 mutation was observed in 13/182 patients (7.1%), none of whom were cured by eradication therapy. Helicobacter pylori-negative cases had a significantly higher non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infection rate than Helicobacter pylori-positive cases (16/29, 55% vs. 3/29, 10%; P < 0.05). Among the Helicobacter pylori-negative cases, non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter-positive cases had a significantly higher complete response rate than non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter-negative cases (12/16, 75% vs. 3/13, 23%; P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Helicobacter pylori-negative and API2-MALT1-negative gastric MALT lymphoma cases exhibited a high rate of non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter infections, which may have contributed to the success of eradication therapy. Therefore, we recommend eradication therapy as a first-line treatment for non-Helicobacter pylori helicobacter-positive gastric MALT lymphoma.

Abstract
Helicobacter species infections may be associated with the development of gastric disorders, such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, intestinal metaplasia, dysplasia and gastric carcinoma. Binding of these bacteria to the gastric mucosa occurs through the recognition of specific glycan receptors expressed by the host epithelial cells. This review addresses the state of the art knowledge on these host glycan structures and the bacterial adhesins involved in Helicobacter spp. adhesion to gastric mucosa colonization. Glycans are expressed on every cell surface and they are crucial for several biological processes, including protein folding, cell signaling and recognition, and host-pathogen interactions. Helicobacter pylori is the most predominant gastric Helicobacter species in humans. The adhesion of this bacterium to glycan epitopes present on the gastric epithelial surface is a crucial step for a successful colonization. Major adhesins essential for colonization and infection are the blood-group antigen-binding adhesin (BabA) which mediates the interaction with fucosylated H-type 1 and Lewis B glycans, and the sialic acid-binding adhesin (SabA) which recognizes the sialyl-Lewis A and X glycan antigens. Since not every H. pylori strain expresses functional BabA or SabA adhesins, other bacterial proteins are most probably also involved in this adhesion process, including LabA (LacdiNAc-binding adhesin), which binds to the LacdiNAc motif on MUC5AC mucin. Besides H. pylori, several other gastric non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacters (NHPH), mainly associated with pigs (H. suis) and pets (H. felis, H. bizzozeronii, H. salomonis, and H. heilmannii), may also colonize the human stomach and cause gastric disease, including gastritis, peptic ulcers and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. These NHPH lack homologous to the major known adhesins involved in colonization of the human stomach. In humans, NHPH infection rate is much lower than in the natural hosts. Differences in the glycosylation profile between gastric human and animal mucins acting as glycan receptors for NHPH-associated adhesins, may be involved. The identification and characterization of the key molecules involved in the adhesion of gastric Helicobacter species to the gastric mucosa is important to understand the colonization and infection strategies displayed by different members of this genus.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Early gastric cancer (EGC) is a well-defined gastric malignancy that is limited to the mucosa or submucosa, irrespective of lymph node metastasis. At an early stage, gastric cancer often does not cause symptoms until it becomes advanced, and it is a heterogeneous disease and usually encountered in its late stages. AREA COVERED This comprehensive review will provide a novel insight into the evaluation of EGC epidemiology, defining terms, extensive etiology and risk factors, and timely diagnosis since prevention is an essential approach for controlling this cancer and reducing its morbidity and mortality. EXPERT OPINION The causative manner of EGC is complex and multifactorial. In recent years, researchers have made significant contributions to understanding the etiology and pathogenesis of EGC, and standardization in the evaluation of disease activity. Though the incidence of this cancer is steadily declining in some advanced societies owing to appropriate interventions, there remains a serious threat to health in developing nations. Early detection of resectable gastric cancer is crucial for better patient outcomes.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori is a spiral-shaped bacterium, which plays a role in the aetiology of gastric diseases in humans. Non-H. pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) species naturally colonise the stomach of animals and also induce gastric lesions in humans, highlighting their zoonotic importance. We evaluated the gastric bacterial colonisation density and gastric lesions and sought to identify the main phylogenetic groups of the Helicobacter spp. obtained from dogs in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, with this study aiming to investigate the occurrence of Helicobacter spp. in saliva and gastric samples from these dogs. This study included 35 dogs and used analysis such as cytology, histopathology, PCR, rapid urease testing, and phylogenetic analysis. Of the dogs, 94.3% were positive for Helicobacter spp., and these bacteria were present in the stomach of 32 dogs and saliva of eight. Respectively, eight, 15, and nine dogs had mild, moderate, and severe colonisation. Lymphocytic-plasmacytic infiltrate was the main gastric lesion. However, the presence of Helicobacter and the density appeared to be unrelated to the gastric lesions. The samples possessed a high nucleotide identity with remarkably similar sequences among some of the species of NHPH such as H. heilmannii s.s., H. salomonis, H. felis, and H. bizzozeronii. The saliva of domestic dogs, even of those who appear clinically healthy, can cause Helicobacter infection in humans and other animals, with, in these dogs, increased density, occurrence rate, and predominance of NHPH of zoonotic importance being found in the stomach with a lower occurrence of Helicobacter spp. in the saliva.

Abstract
A 53-year-old woman visited a doctor and complained of chest discomfort after meals. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy showed multiple granular elevations in the gastric body. After biopsies from the elevations, she was diagnosed with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Polymerase chain reaction also detected Helicobacter pylori and H. suis. Treatment to eradicate H. pylori and H. suis was successful. Endoscopic examination after the bacterial eradication treatment showed that multiple granular elevations remained in the gastric body; however, no lymphoma cells were found during histopathological examination. Thus, we reported a case of H. pylori-positive gastric MALT lymphoma with a unique morphology associated with H. suis superinfection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The clinical significance of non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) is still unknown. There are many reports of NHPH-infected patients suffering from gastric diseases. Here, we investigated the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) positivity of NHPH infection in gastric disease patients who were negative for H. pylori (Hp) by the rapid urease test and by pathological observation. MATERIALS AND METHODS We collected the 296 endoscopically obtained gastric mucosal samples of Hp-negative gastric disease patients diagnosed based on a rapid urease test and pathology from 17 hospitals in Japan from September 2013 to June 2019, and we analyzed the existence of Hp and NHPH by PCR. The samples were also treated by indirect immunohistochemistry using an anti-Helicobacter suis VacA paralog antibody and were observed by confocal laser microscopy. RESULTS Among the 236 non-Hp-eradicated cases, 49 cases (20.8%) were positive for NHPH. Among them, 20 cases were positive for Helicobacter suis, 7 cases were positive for Helicobacter heilmannii sensu stricto/ Helicobacter ailurogastricus (Hhss/Ha), and the other 22 cases could not be identified. The regional differences in the infection rates were significant. Forty percent of the nodular gastritis cases, 24% of the MALT lymphoma, 17% of the chronic gastritis cases, and 33% of the gastroduodenal ulcer cases were NHPH positive. Forty-five patients had been treated with one of the four types of combinations of a proton pump inhibitor and two antibiotics, and in all of these cases, the NHPH diagnosed by PCR was successfully eradicated. Immunohistochemistry using the Helicobacter suis-specific HsvA antibody coincided well with the PCR results. Among the 29 post-Hp eradication cases, three were NHPH positive, including one Hhss/Ha-positive case. Thus, approx. 20% of the Hp-negative non-Hp-eradicated gastric disease patients treated at 17 hospitals in Japan were infected with NHPH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non Helicobacter pylori gastric Helicobacters (NHPGHs) are associated with a range of upper gastrointestinal symptoms, histologic and endoscopic findings. For the first time in Iran, we performed a cross-sectional study in order to determine the prevalence of five species of NHPGHs in patients presenting with dyspepsia. METHODS The participants were divided into H. pylori-infected and NHPGH-infected groups, based on the rapid urease test, histological analysis of biopsies, and PCR assay of ureA, ureB, and ureAB genes. The study included 428 gastric biopsies form dyspeptic patients, who did not receive any treatment for H. pylori. The samples were collected and sent to the laboratory within two years. H. pylori was identified in 368 samples, which were excluded from the study. Finally, a total of 60 non-H. pylori samples were studied for NHPGH species. RESULTS The overall frequency of NHPGH species was 10 for H. suis (three duodenal ulcer, three gastritis, and four gastric ulcer samples), 10 for H. felis (one gastritis, three duodenal ulcer, and six gastric ulcer samples), 20 for H. salomonis (four duodenal ulcer, five gastritis, and 11 gastric ulcer samples), 13 for H. heilmannii (three gastritis, five duodenal ulcer, and five gastric ulcer samples), and 7 for H. bizzozeronii (zero gastric ulcer, two duodenal ulcer, and five gastritis samples). CONCLUSIONS Given our evidence about the possibility of involvement of NHPGHs in patients suffering from gastritis and nonexistence of mixed H. pylori infection, bacteriological testing of subjects negative for H. pylori becomes clinically relevant and important. Our findings suggest H. salomonis has the highest rate among the NHPGH species in Iranian dyspeptic patients.

Abstract
Most patients with gastric mucosa‐associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma are infected with Helicobacter pylori, and eradication therapy is the first‐line treatment for localized disease with H pylori infection. However, there were several reports showing effectiveness of eradication therapy in even H pylori negative cases. Gastric MALT lymphomas are endoscopically classified into three common types: superficial, ulcerative, and elevated types. For the past 20 years, we have encountered 200 cases of localized gastric MALT lymphoma. Among them, only 4 cases (2%) showed similar macroscopic findings to those of nodular gastritis (gastric MALT lymphoma with nodular gastritis‐like appearance; M‐NGA). Here, we compared clinicopathological characteristics and prevalence of non‐H pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) infection between M‐NGA and other common types of gastric MALT lymphoma. To examine the prevalence of NHPH infection, DNA was extracted from formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded biopsy tissues from four cases of M‐NGA, 20 cases of common endoscopic types of gastric MALT lymphoma, and 10 cases of nodular gastritis. We used a highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction assay to detect the presence of five species of NHPH (Helicobacter suis, H felis, H bizzozeronii, H salomonis, and H heilmannii). H suis infection was detected in 4, 2, and 0 of the 4, 20, and 10 cases of M‐NGA, other types of gastric MALT lymphoma, and nodular gastritis, respectively. Other NHPH species were not detected in any cases. Complete response rate by eradication therapy was 4/4 in M‐NGA cases. Therefore, nodular gastritis‐like MALT lymphoma, which shows a very rare phenotype, is closely associated with NHPH infection, and eradication therapy may be the first‐choice treatment.

Abstract
Helicobacter suis is the most prevalent non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species in the human stomach and is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. H. suis colonizes the gastric mucosa of 60-95% of pigs at slaughter age, and is associated with chronic gastritis, decreased weight gain, and ulcers. Here, we show that experimental H. suis infection changes the mucin composition and glycosylation, decreasing the amount of H. suis-binding glycan structures in the pig gastric mucus niche. Similarly, the H. suis-binding ability of mucins from H. pylori-infected humans is lower than that of noninfected individuals. Furthermore, the H. suis growth-inhibiting effect of mucins from both noninfected humans and pigs is replaced by a growth-enhancing effect by mucins from infected individuals/pigs. Thus, Helicobacter spp. infections impair the mucus barrier by decreasing the H. suis-binding ability of the mucins and by decreasing the antiprolific activity that mucins can have on H. suis. Inhibition of these mucus-based defenses creates a more stable and inhabitable niche for H. suis. This is likely of importance for long-term colonization and outcome of infection, and reversing these impairments may have therapeutic benefits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infections with gastric Helicobacter spp. are associated with gastritis, peptic ulceration, and malignancies. Helicobacter pylori is the most prevalent Helicobacter species colonizing the human stomach. Other gastric non-H. pylori helicobacters (NHPHs) have been described in 0.2%-6% of human patients with gastric disorders. Nevertheless, due to difficulties in the diagnosis of NHPH infections and lack of routine screening, this is most likely an underestimation of their true prevalence. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have been performed in the presence of Helicobacter spp. in children suffering from gastric disorders in Southern Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 110 children with gastric complaints were examined at the Cukurova University Balcali hospital, Turkey. Gastroscopy was performed to evaluate the presence of gastric mucosal lesions. Biopsies of the pyloric gland zone were taken for histopathological analysis, rapid urease testing, and presence of Helicobacter spp. DNA by PCR. RESULTS Based on the PCR results, the prevalence of Helicobacter spp. was 32.7% (36/110). H. pylori was found in 30.9% (34/110), H. suis in 1.8% (2/110), and H. heilmannii/H. ailurogastricus in 0.9% (1/110) of the human patients. A mixed infection with H. pylori and H. suis was present in one patient. The presence of mucosal abnormalities, such as nodular inflammation, ulceration, and hyperemia, as well as gastritis, was significantly higher in Helicobacter spp. positive patients. CONCLUSION Helicobacter pylori, H. suis, and H. heilmannii/H. ailurogastricus were present in children with gastric complaints. Infection with these pathogens may be involved in the development of gastritis and ulceration.

Abstract
A reddish depressed lesion was found in the corpus of the stomach of a 56-year-old man. Gastric biopsy showed no findings of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, including lympho-epithelial lesions. A urea breath test, stool antigen test and serum IgG antibody to Helicobacter pylori test were negative. Magnifying endoscopy using narrow-band-imaging showed no malignant structures. Gastric biopsy specimens were subjected to immunohistochemistry and a polymerase chain reaction, which identified Helicobacter suis infection. Triple therapy with esomeprazole, metronidazole, and amoxicillin was administered for 10 days. Three months later, endoscopy showed the significant improvement of the lesion. H. suis infection should be considered in chronic gastritis patients without H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Gastric colonization with Helicobacter pylori induces diverse human pathological conditions, including superficial gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, and gastric adenocarcinoma and its precursors. The treatment of these conditions often relies on the eradication of H. pylori, an intervention that is increasingly difficult to achieve and that does not prevent disease progression in some contexts. There is, therefore, a pressing need to develop new experimental models of H. pylori-associated gastric pathology to support novel drug development in this field. Here, we review the current status of in vivo and ex vivo models of gastric H. pylori colonization, and of Helicobacter-induced gastric pathology, focusing on models of gastric pathology induced by H. pylori, Helicobacter felis and Helicobacter suis in rodents and large animals. We also discuss the more recent development of gastric organoid cultures from murine and human gastric tissue, as well as from human pluripotent stem cells, and the outcomes of H. pylori infection in these systems.

Abstract
To explore the effects of gastric non-H. pylori Helicobacter species(NHPH) on the structure and potential function of gastric microbiota, we employed 16S rRNA gene sequencing on 164 gastric biopsy specimens from NHPH (H. suis, H. felis, H. salomonis) /H. pylori coinfection individuals, H. pylori monoinfection individuals and healthy controls. The results demonstrated that marked structural and functional variations between H. pylori mono- and coinfection samples (HPHS, HPHF, HPHM). The changes in bacterial structure induced by NHPH are mainly attributed to their ability of gastric acid secretion inhibition as well as bacterial chemotaxis. Both the HPHS and HPHF groups showed significant increases in phylotype richness and significant decreases in β diversity, but this trend was not found in HPHM group. Regarding the top five phyla and top thirty-five genera, the HPHS and HPHF groups had similar variation trends in relative abundance. The increased relative abundance levels of the genera Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, Photobacterium, and Clostridium were associated with increases in predicted signal transduction/metabolic pathways among the three coinfection groups. The relative abundance levels of bacteria involved in the formation of N-nitroso compounds were significantly decreased in the HPHS and HPHF groups (e.g., Streptococcus, Neisseria, Haemophilus, Veillonella, Clostridium, etc.). The significantly decreased relative abundance levels of the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes in the HPHS and HPHF groups were associated with the observed increases in predicted lipid metabolism pathways. The results in this study implied that NHPH can arouse the variation of structure and function of gastric microbiota, which may pave the way to further research on the pathogenesis of gastric diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-Helicobacter pylori-helicobacters (NHPH) compose a group of gram negative zoonotic bacteria that may induce in humans gastric diseases including gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer and MALT lymphoma. Their prevalence in the general population has previously been reported to 0.1-6.2%, although such reports still remain less in number. AIMS This study aimed at estimating the prevalence of gastric NHPH in Japanese people, and further aimed at linking this to different gastric diseases and co-infection with H. pylori. METHODS Endoscopically obtained biopsy samples from 280 Japanese patients with various gastric diseases were collected. Samples were analyzed by immunohistochemistry and by species-specific PCR for detection of gastric helicobacters. RESULTS The total prevalence of gastric NHPH among 280 Japanese patients was 6.1%, and the prevalence of H. pylori was 65.7%. There was no significant difference in prevalence of either NHPH or H. pylori when infected with H. pylori or NHPH, respectively. NHPH infection was found to be the highest in patients with gastric MALT lymphoma and duodenal ulcer, the former being independent of co-infection with H. pylori and the latter being dependent. CONCLUSIONS This study reports a total prevalence of 6.1% of gastric NHPH in Japanese patients, and further highlights gastric MALT lymphoma and duodenal ulcer (when co-infected with H. pylori) as important related diseases.

Abstract
A gastric juice-based real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was established to identify Helicobacter pylori infection, clarithromycin susceptibility and human CYP2C19 genotypes and to guide the choice of proton pump inhibitor (PPI), clarithromycin and amoxicillin treatment for tailored H. pylori eradication therapy. From January 2013 to November 2014, 178 consecutive dyspeptic patients were enrolled for collection of gastric biopsy samples and gastric juice by endoscopy at the Peking University Third Hospital; 105 and 73 H. pylori-positive and -negative patients, respectively, were included in this study. H. pylori infection was defined as samples with both a strongly positive rapid urease test (RUT) and positive H. pylori histology. A series of primers and probes were distributed into four reactions for identifying the H. pylori cagH gene coupled with an internal control (Rnase P gene), A2142G and A2143G mutants of the H. pylori 23S rRNA gene, and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) G681A of CYP2C19*2 and G636A of CYP2C19*3. The E-test and DNA sequencing were used to evaluate the H. pylori clarithromycin susceptibility phenotype and genotype. The SNPs CYP2C19*2 and CYP2C19*3 were also evaluated by nucleotide sequencing. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), and negative predictive value (NPV) of this gastric juice-based real-time PCR assay were evaluated by comparing with the same measures obtained through gastric biopsy-based PCR and culture. The H. pylori diagnostic sensitivities of the culture, PCR, and gastric biopsy- and gastric juice-based real-time PCR assays were 90.48% (95/105), 92.38% (97/105), 97.14% (102/105) and 100% (105/105), respectively; the specificities of the above methods were all 100%. Higher false-negative rates were found among the gastric biopsy samples assessed by culture (10.48%, 11/105), PCR (7.62%, 8/105) and real-time PCR (2.86%, 3/105) than in gastric juice by real-time PCR. Regarding clarithromycin susceptibility, a concordance of 82.98% (78/94) and discordance of 17.02% (16/94) were observed among the different methods, discrepancies that mainly represent differences between the H. pylori clarithromycin susceptibility phenotype and genotype. Three coinfections of susceptible and resistant strains were detected, with resistant-to-susceptible ratios of 1.16, 3.44, and 8.26. The CYP2C19 genotyping results from gastric juice by real-time PCR were completely in accordance with those obtained from biopsy samples by conventional PCR. This gastric juice-based real-time PCR assay is a more accurate method for detecting H. pylori infection, clarithromycin susceptibility and CYP2C19 polymorphisms. The method may be employed to inform the choice of proton pump inhibitor (PPI), clarithromycin and amoxicillin treatment for tailored H. pylori eradication therapy.

Abstract
Important progress has been made in the management of Helicobacter pylori infection and in this fifth edition of the Maastricht Consensus Report, key aspects related to the clinical role of H. pylori were re-evaluated in 2015. In the Maastricht V/Florence Consensus Conference, 43 experts from 24 countries examined new data related to H. pylori in five subdivided workshops: (1) Indications/Associations, (2) Diagnosis, (3) Treatment, (4) Prevention/Public Health, (5) H. pylori and the Gastric Microbiota. The results of the individual workshops were presented to a final consensus voting that included all participants. Recommendations are provided on the basis of the best available evidence and relevance to the management of H. pylori infection in the various clinical scenarios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tinospora sagittata (Oliv.) Gagnep. var. craveniana (S.Y.Hu) Lo (TSG) is a traditional Chinese herb that has been used for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infection and has anti-bacterial and anti-ulcer activity. Our study investigated the bactericidal effects of TSG and its major component, palmatine, against a Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strain isolated from pig and the standard strain H. pylori SS1 in vitro and in vivo. METHODS H. pylori was isolated from pig and named H. pylori SCYA201401. For in vitro experiments, the inhibitory activity of TSG and palmatine against H. pylori SCYA201401 and H. pylori SS1 were tested by use of the agar cup diffusion technique. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined from the absence of H. pylori colonies on agar plates. Time-kill curves were used to evaluate bactericidal activity; the average number of colonies was calculated at 0 to 48 h after liquid incubation, with concentrations of drugs at 0.5, 1, and 2 × MIC. For in vivo experiments, H. pylori SCYA201401-infected mice were randomly divided into TSG, palmatine, triple therapy (omeprazole, clarithromycin, and amoxicillin), blank control, and model groups. The eradication ratios were determined by use of rapid urease tests and bacterial culture. RESULTS In vitro, the MIC and MBC of TSG against H. pylori SCYA201401 and SS1 were both 6250 μg/mL, whereas palmatine against H. pylori SCYA201401 was 6.25 μg/mL and against H. pylori SS1 was 3.12 μg/mL. The time-kill curves showed a dose-dependent, progressive decline in the numbers of viable bacteria up to 40 h. In vivo, the eradication ratios in the TSG and palmatine groups of mice were 80 and 50 % compared with 70 % in the triple-therapy group. CONCLUSION TSG and its major component, palmatine, have bactericidal activity against H. pylori in vitro and in vivo. The possibility that TSG or palmatine can be effective in the treatment of human and animals H. pylori infection deserves investigation.

Abstract
Helicobacter species are newly emerging bacteria with great public implications but till now its epidemiology is not fully understood; so, this study was conducted to investigate the possible role of ruminants in the epidemiology of these pathogens. For this purpose, fecal samples were collected from 149 animals (76 sheep, 33 goats, 21 cattle, and 19 buffaloes) and stool specimens from 10 animal caretakers in intimate contact with the examined animals. All samples were examined for the presence of Helicobacter species through detection of Helicobacter genus specific 16S rRNA using PCR. Then, all positive Helicobacter spp. amplicons were sequenced to recognize their species through BLAST analysis at GenBank. The overall prevalence of Helicobacter spp. was 14.8% while the distribution among the different animals was 26.3%, 3%, 4.8%, and 0% in sheep, goats, cattle, and buffaloes respectively. Helicobacter canis was the predominant species and detected only in sheep (21%) and goats (3%). Moreover, Helicobacter winghamensis and Helicobacter canadensis were also detected in sheep but not in other animals, whereas the only positive bovine sample was identified as Helicobacter bovis. On the other hand, 4 out of 10 humans were positive for Helicobacter spp. and all sequences were identified as H. canis. The sequences identity matrix and phylogenetic analysis of H. canis sequences from humans and sheep contacts revealed that one human sequence was identical to that of sheep and making sister group clade, which prove the zoonotic transmission of this pathogen between sheep and human contacts. However, our findings highlight sheep as a potential reservoir for H. canis, further researches are needed to address the potential role of sheep in the food-borne transmission of such emerging pathogen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Of all human cancers, gastric carcinoma is the one of the leading causes of death. Helicobacter pylori is considered a major etiologic agent of this disease. Spontaneously occurring gastric carcinoma is a rare diagnosis in nonhuman primates. A 2011 case report documented a high incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma in a closed colony of captive sooty mangabeys (Cercebus atys). However, H. pylori infection was not detected in these animals. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, using archived formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded stomach sections of these animals alternative methodologies were used to identify H. pylori and other non-H. pylori Helicobacter species. In addition, two additional cases of sooty mangabeys with metastatic gastric carcinoma are characterized. RESULTS Using fluorescent in situ hybridization, we identified gastric H. suis in 75% of archived and new gastric carcinoma cases. In the two newly reported cases, H. suis and a novel Helicobacter species were detected via PCR and sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. H. pylori was not identified in any of the gastric carcinoma cases via FISH and/or PCR and sequence analysis of Helicobacter spp. in DNA from of available tissues. CONCLUSIONS This report is the first to characterize Helicobacter species infection in spontaneous gastric carcinoma with metastatic potential in nonhuman primates.

Abstract
In the past year, a substantial number of (putative) novel Helicobacter species have been described, including Helicobacter himalayensis colonizing the Himalayan marmot and Helicobacter apodemus, colonizing the Korean striped field mouse. In addition, a putative novel gastric Helicobacter species was identified in wild gorillas and chimpanzees, for which the name "Candidatus H. homininae" was proposed. A high incidence of gastric non-H. pylori Helicobacter infection was described in China and multiple case reports have described the involvement of enterohepatic Helicobacter species, especially Helicobacter cinaedi, in a wide range of diseases. Several studies in rodent models further elucidated the mechanisms underlying the development of gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma during infection with gastric non-H. pylori Helicobacters. The effects of infection with gastric Helicobacters on the development of neuroinflammation were investigated and several enterohepatic Helicobacter species were shown to affect the composition of the gut microbiota, to influence vaccine efficiency as well as the progression of cancer in distant sites of the body.
