Bibliometric Analysis of Cross-Sectional Studies on Early Childhood Caries

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a significant global public health issue with economic and psychosocial consequences, impacting families and pediatric dentists. It affects children's quality of life, causing pain and infection. Despite increasing research on ECC cross-sectional studies worldwide, inconsistencies and gaps remain in terms of geographical disparities. This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of cross-sectional surveys on ECC by examining the co-authorship, citation analysis, co-citation networks, and keyword co-occurrence.

METHODS

An advanced search was performed using relevant terms in the Dimensions database from 2005 to 2024. Bibliometric parameters were retrieved through the database's analytical view tool and VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

A total of 571 documents were identified, with the highest output between 2019 and 2023 (355 records). Saul Martins Paiva authored the most articles (10), with 294 citations and a total link strength of 19. Brazil and the U.S. had the highest numbers of publications (56 and 52) and total link strengths, i.e., a measure of collaborative ties (21 and 50). The Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in Brazil had the most published documents (15). BMC Oral Health led in terms of citations (44 articles, 899 citations, average 20.43%). The frequently co-occurring terms included ECC (1147 occurrences), oral health (417), and preschool child (301).

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric analysis highlights the global interest in cross-sectional ECC studies beyond pediatric dentistry, helping researchers understand the field's scope and progress.

Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most-Cited Articles on the Methods of Shade-Matching in Dentistry

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this bibliometric analysis is to identify the 100 most cited articles and delve into citation metrics to gain insights into the evolving trends in shade-matching methods in dentistry.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Following PRISMA guidelines, two reviewers conducted a structured search in Scopus using keyword-based search strings. The top 100 articles were selected based on predefined criteria, and their bibliometric data were extracted. Harzing's Publish Or Perish and VOSviewer were used to generate the bibliographic network.

RESULTS

Between 1989 and 2017, the top 100 articles were published and obtained citations ranging from 560 to 48. Twenty-eight articles received over 100 citations, deemed classic. The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and the United States of America were the primary contributors. In-vitro experimental studies employing restorative material samples were prevalent, with spectrophotometers being the favored method of color analysis. Using Python, Spearman's correlation coefficient resealed positive correlations between citation count and age of publication (r = 0.16, p = 0.12) and between citation count and the impact factor of the journal (r = 0.35, p < 0.05). However, a negative correlation was observed between citation density and age of publication (r = -0.46, p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated a significant upward trajectory of citation count in shade-matching in dentistry, reflecting high-quality scientific contributions.

Trends of machine learning for dental caries research in Southeast Asia: insights from a bibliometric analysis

Background

Dental caries is a common chronic oral disease, posing a serious public health issue. By analyzing large datasets, machine learning shows potential in addressing this problem. This study employs bibliometric analysis to explore emerging topics, collaborations, key authors, and research trends in Southeast Asia related to the application of machine learning in dental caries management.

Methods

A comprehensive selection using the Scopus database to obtain relevant research, covering publications from inception to July 2024 was done. We employed the Bibliometric approaches, including co-authorship networks, yearly publishing trends, institutional and national partnerships, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and citation analysis, for the collected data. To explore the visualization and network analysis, we employed the tools such as VOSviewer and Bibliometrix in R package.

Results

The final bibliometric analysis included 246 papers. We found that Malaysia became the top contributor with 59 publications, followed by Indonesia (37) and Thailand (29). Malaysia had the highest Multiple Country Publications (MCP) ratio at 0.407. Top institutions including the Universiti Sains Malaysia led with 39 articles, followed by Chiang Mai University (36) and the National University of Singapore (30) became the leader. Co-authorship analysis using VOSviewer revealed six distinct clusters. A total of 1220 scholars contributed to these publications. The top 10 keywords, including 'human' and 'dental caries,' indicated research hotspots.

Conclusion

We found growing evidence of machine learning applications to address dental caries in Southeast Asia. The bibliometric analysis highlights key authors, collaborative networks, and emerging topics, revealing research trends since 2014. This study underscores the importance of bibliometric analysis in tackling this public health issue.

Comparative Bibliometric Analysis of Established and Emerging Databases on Salivary Biomarkers for Early Oral Cancer Diagnosis

BACKGROUND

Salivary biomarkers play an important role in the preventive strategy for oral cancer detection at an early stage. The aim of this study was to carry out a comparative quantitative analysis of the research material on the topic in one established database, Scopus and another emerging database, Dimensions.

METHOD

An electronic search was performed in Scopus and Dimensions in April 2024 with the search subjects "Saliva," "Biomarkers," "Diagnosis," and "Oral Cancer." The retrieved data were analyzed using Biblioshiny for RStudio and MS Excel.

RESULT

The search yielded 229 and 158 documents in Scopus and Dimensions, respectively. The data were studied to understand the coverage, concentration, and diversion of research articles. The analysis revealed high singularity index for Scopus and low overlap percentage between the two databases. Scopus was found to have higher citation count per article, however, the citation correlation between Scopus and Dimensions was found to be strong. Author productivity was found to be low in both the databases.

CONCLUSION

Scopus and Dimensions vary in their scope, volume of data, and coverage policies. Both the databases have complimentary coverage on salivary biomarkers for oral cancer diagnosis. However, Scopus has a greater number of articles, sources, and citations resulting in better coverage of the topic.

The use of quantitative light-induced fluorescence in carious lesions research: A bibliometric review

OBJECTIVE

This bibliometric analysis evaluated the top 100 most-cited articles on the application of quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) technology in caries research.

DATA

The following data were collected: title, authors, country, institution, citations count, title and year of article, study design, topic and keywords. Networks among authors and keywords were constructed by VOSviewer software.

SOURCES

Scopus database on April 25, 2024.

STUDY SELECTION

A global citation score of 4633 (average 46.33 citations) was calculated with publication years ranged from 1999 to 2020. Caries Research emerged as the top contributing journal. Pretty IA was the most prolific author (18 %). United Kingdom had the highest number of most-cited papers (32 %), followed by Netherlands and USA (20 % each). Laboratory studies constituted the predominant study design (45 %), followed by randomized clinical trials (20 %) and non-systematic reviews (11 %). The keywords "dental caries" and "fluorescence" had 81 and 79 occurrences, respectively. The main topic was QLF use for caries detection (45 %).

CONCLUSIONS

This paper provides an update summary of the scientific impact of QLF technology application in caries research. QLF has gained increasing attention worldwide, accompanied by a consistent rise in scientific investigations exploring its application in caries research.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The findings offer valuable insights into the most influential articles in QLF technology for caries assessment, serving as a critical resource for researchers, clinicians, and students. Understanding the trends in this field can aid in informed decision-making and the advancement of evidence-based practices in caries management and prevention.

Beyond Diagnosis: Preliminary Study of Impact on Children and Parents in Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis-Associated Uveitis

Chronic diseases are a growing problem for global health due to the large number of people they involve, the repercussions they have on the mental and physical well-being of those affected, and the costs to society. Particularly, chronic illnesses of childhood have important psychological implications, not only for affected children but also for their parents. Among these pathologies, neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) and uveitis associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA-U) may affect mental and physical health, emotions, memory, learning, and socializing. This study evaluates the psychological and behavioral/emotional impact of NDDs and JIA-U on children and parents. Specifically, 30 children with active JIA-U and 30 children with NDDs and their parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and Parent Stress Index-Short Form (PSI) questionnaires. Children with NDDs have statistically significant differences in all the emotional and behavioral variables compared to JIA-U children, and parents of children with NDDs experience an increased stress load compared to parents of children with JIA-U. This study emphasizes the wide range of emotional and behavioral challenges that parents face with NDDs. This study emphasizes that parents of children with NDDs not only experience higher levels of stress compared to parents of normally developing children but also experience higher levels of stress compared to parents of children with potentially debilitating chronic diseases such as JIA-U.

A bibliometric and Altmetric analysis of the 100 top most cited articles on dentin adhesives

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to identify the 100 top-cited articles on dentin adhesives utilizing comprehensive bibliometric and altmetric analyses.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The Institute of Scientific Information Web of Knowledge database was used to compile the top-cited articles published from 1945 through February 12, 2023. Citation counts were manually retrieved for each article from Scopus, Google Scholar, Dimensions, and Altmetric. The articles were analyzed in terms of their number of citations, year, journal name, author (name, institution, and country), and type and specific field of study. We used descriptive statistics to summarize the results.

RESULTS

The analysis revealed that the top 100 cited articles originated from 18 English-language journals and collectively accumulated a remarkable 34526 citations. The article with the highest number of citations garnered 1288 references. Among authors, Van Meerbeek B. stood out with nine articles and 4650 citations, followed by Pashley D.H. with six articles and 2769 citations. Japan was the leading contributor by country, while the Catholic University of Leuven led in terms of institutions with 20 articles.

CONCLUSION

According to this study, basic research and review articles garnered the most citations, respectively. The citation analysis revealed different trends for researchers, the first being that researchers have focused on basic fields such as the ultramorphology of dentin and adhesive interfaces, followed by bond strength to dentin. Two studies on clinical experiences suggested that studies with high-level evidence, such as systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or randomized controlled clinical trials, are required.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

It is identified that more studies with high-level evidence-based research are needed in the field of dental adhesives.

Bibliographic analysis and evaluation of the mesh keywords in the journal of prosthodontics: Implant, esthetic, and reconstructive dentistry

BACKGROUND

Various studies have been conducted to analyze data via bibliometric analysis in different dentistry, including prosthetic dentistry. However, these studies evaluated the most cited published articles in dentistry.

OBJECTIVE

To analyze and evaluate the characteristic development of several mesh keywords in the Journal of Prosthodontics - Implant, Esthetic, and Reconstructive Dentistry between 1992 and 2022.

METHODS

The Scopus databases was searched to retrieve the data related to 8 categories, including published articles, most cited documents, authors and organizations, and maximum articles cited during the evaluation period. The data retrieved were exported to a Microsoft Excel sheet and were analyzed using the bibliometrix package. The data were first analyzed for ten years and then for 30 years. The highest of 10 were reported for each category, and co-authorship, reoccurrence, and linked data were also reported.

RESULTS

2603 published documents were recorded from the Scopus databases. Articles comprised 87.9% of the total published work, followed by review articles at 5.46%. The most productive decade was between 2013 and 2022. 3793 terms were used during the evaluation period, with the maximum number in 2003-2012 (2481). A total of 5392 keywords were used during 1992-2022, with the highest number (3232) from 2013 to 2022. A total of 6108 authors were acknowledged, with the maximum number (3964) from 2013 to 2022 and the fewest (767) from 1992 to 2002. Authors from different countries increased from 17 countries in 1992-2002 to 52 countries in 2013-2022 (total = 63 countries). Similarly, the number of organizations increased from 312 organizations in 1992-2002 to 1315 organizations in 2013-2022 (total = 1976 organizations).

CONCLUSION

The current bibliometric analysis delivered a comprehensive overview about more spread research topics and its impactful role in contemporary dentistry, especially prosthetic dentistry.

Developmental Defects of Enamel: A Bibliometric Analysis of the Top 100 Most-Cited Papers

BACKGROUND

Developmental defects of enamel (DDE) are a result of disturbances during formation and maturation of the enamel. Evaluating the most-cited DDE papers can provide important tools that point to the gaps and strengths of this important topic in dentistry.

SUMMARY

This bibliometric study analyzed the 100 most-cited papers on DDE. Using a combined keyword search strategy, the 100 most-cited papers were selected in the Web of Science Core Collection. Papers that addressed any type of DDE were included. The extracted data were title, number of citations, study theme, authorship, journal, type of DDE, type of dentition (primary or permanent), type of diagnosis, study design, year, and country of publication. The bibliometric networks were generated through VOSviewer software. The 100 papers had a range from 78 to 459 citations. The main themes of studies were etiopathogenesis (53%), prevalence and incidence (22%), and diagnosis (8%). The authors with the highest number of citations were Goodman AH and Rose JC (459 citations). Most articles were published in dental journals (47%). The most studied types of DDE were fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta in the permanent dentition (47%). Observational (24%) and non-systematic reviews (24%) were the most common study designs and ranged from 1977 to 2019. The country with the highest number of publications was the USA (41%).

KEY MESSAGES

Most of the top 100 DDE papers were about fluorosis and amelogenesis imperfecta, with top papers from three continents with English as the native language. This topic is of great importance in dentistry, and the need for further studies is highlighted, especially regarding the diagnosis and treatment of some DDEs.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Platelet Derivate Uses in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

PURPOSE

Concentrated platelet derivatives (PDs) such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) have been extensively applied in tissue engineering, and particularly in various fields of regenerative dentistry. The purpose of the present citation analysis was to compile the 100 top-cited articles on the PDs uses in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

METHODS

A cross-sectional search of the relevant studies in the Web of Science citation database was conducted to identify the 100 most-cited articles. All the included papers consisted of independent variables of this analysis. Covariates that were further considered were basic bibliometric indexes, such as publication year, publishing journal, authorship, institution and country of origin, study design, and field of study. The primary outcome variables were citation counts and citation density. A descriptive analysis of secondary outcome variables, namely bibliographic data such as keyword, abstract, title term co-occurrence analysis, thematic map and wordcloud analysis, was performed using the bibliometrix R and VOSviewer software.

RESULTS

The total citation count for the 100 most-cited articles ranged from 85 to 1821, with 2002 being the most productive year. With 15 articles, the Journal of Periodontology was the most represented journal, followed closely by the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Clinical Oral Implants Research. The United States published the largest number of papers. Original basic science research studies on implantology and biology dominated the top-cited list. Randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews were adequately represented in the top-cited list. Platelet-derived growth factor and osteoprotegerin represented emerging minimally developed themes, while PRP, growth factors and fibrin, along with the applications of PRF in gingival recession and intra bony defects, were considered important motor themes.

CONCLUSIONS

The current study provides a complete list and in-depth analysis of the 100 most-cited publications relevant to PDs use in oral and maxillofacial surgery, identifying the most important research topics, most impactful authors, institutions, and countries. Though PRP studies were leading the top-cited list, publications focusing on PRF pesented higher citation density values, indicating a continuously increasing citation rate.

Fluoride Varnish in Dentistry: A Bibliometric Analysis of the 100 Most-Cited Papers

A highly cited paper is a milestone and might impact research and clinical practice. The present study analyzed the 100 most-cited papers on fluoride varnishes in dentistry. A search was performed on July 20, 2022, on the Web of Science Core Collection. Two independent researchers extracted the following data: number and citation density; year and journal of publication; study design; main topic; authors; institutions; keywords; countries and continents. Scopus and Google Scholar were consulted to compare the number of citations. Bibliometric networks were generated in the VOSviewer. The number of citations ranged from 36 to 351, and thirteen papers were cited more than 100 times. The papers were published between 1977 and 2018, most of which were published after 2008 (48%). The most prevalent journal was Caries Research (17%). Intervention studies were the most common design (41%). The most discussed topics were dental caries prevention (48%) and dental remineralization (31%). Europe was the continent with the highest number of publications (46%), mainly from Sweden (14%), and Umea University had the most substantial number of studies (8%). Petersson L.G. was the author with more papers in the top 100 (6%). The most used keywords were "dental caries" (34%) and "fluoride varnish" (31%). It can be concluded that the top 100 cited papers on fluoride varnish primarily originated from Europe, with the majority consisting of intervention studies focusing on the utilization of fluoride varnish for the prevention of dental caries.

Tooth auto-transplantation: A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited articles

BACKGROUND/AIM

Tooth auto-transplantation has recently gained high clinical acceptance. The aim of this study was to identify the top 100 most-cited articles regarding tooth auto-transplantation, to analyse multiple citations and publication metrics and to outline the historical scientific advancements in this field.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

An advanced search of the Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science 'Core Collection' and Elsevier's Scopus databases utilising specific keywords related to tooth auto-transplantation between 1971 and 2021 was performed. The retrieved articles were ranked in descending order based on their Web of Science citation counts and further cross-matched with citation data from Scopus. The extracted data included citation counts, citation density, level of evidence, year of publication, contributing authors names and institutes, corresponding author's address, journal of publication, journal local citations index, cumulative growth index, keywords and keywords Plus. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and graphical mapping.

RESULTS

A total of 1290 articles were retrieved. The top 100 most-cited articles received a total of 4899 (Web of Science) and 5250 (Scopus) citations. Among these, cohort studies (29%) and case series (18%) were the most common study designs. Scandinavian countries produced major contributions in defining the top 100 most-cited articles and ranked within the top 5 countries based on the number of publications and citations per year. The greatest contributing authors were Schwartz O (n = 12), Andreasen JO (n = 8) and Paulsen HU (n = 6), and they were affiliated with Copenhagen, Denmark. The top contributing journals were American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology, European Journal of Orthodontics, Dental Traumatology and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric analysis revealed a large geographical scientific interest and broad development in the field of tooth auto-transplantation spanning multiple dental disciplines.

Global research on dental polymers and their application: A bibliometric analysis and knowledge mapping

Purpose

The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the top-cited articles, countries, journals, authors, and papers published related to dental polymers and their application. Research articles published from 1962 to 2021 on dental polymers and their application were identified using the Scopus database.

Methodology

Bibliographical data related to the abstract, citations, keywords, and other relevant information was extracted using different combinations of keywords. Further evaluation and visualization of the selected data were performed with the help of various tools, including MS Excel, Microsoft Word, Google open refine, Biblioshiny, BibExcel, and VOS viewer. An initial search revealed 351 documents, of which 327 were chosen for further analysis.

Results

A substantial increase in the number of publications related to this domain was observed. The United States was the most prolific country, while the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki from Greece was identified as the leading institute.

Conclusion

This bibliometric analysis can guide researchers, funding agencies, industry, and institutions.

Peri-implantitis: A bibliometric network analysis of top 100 most-cited research articles

BACKGROUND

Over the past decades, there has been an increase in research publications focusing on peri-implantitis. When facing limited healthcare resources, bibliometric analyses can guide researchers and funding parties toward areas where reallocation or more focus on research activity is warranted. The main objective of this study was to identify the trends of the top 100 cited articles on peri-implantitis research as the first study of its kind.

METHODS

A Web of Science search, using the keywords "peri-implantitis or periimplantitis" was built to create a database of the most-cited articles. Articles were ranked by citation count and screened by two independent reviewers. The bibliometric characteristics of the studies were gathered and analyzed using several bibliometric software. Author collaborations, author clusters, and keyword co-occurrence network analyses were also performed. The correlation between the citation count and the age of each article was tested.

RESULTS

The top 100 cited papers were published from 1994 to 2018 and the total citation counts ranged from 119 to 972 with 244.5 citations/paper on average. There was no correlation between the age of the articles and the citation count (p-value = 0.67). 21% of the studies consisted of prospective clinical studies. 35% of the papers focused on treatment and prevention of peri-implantitis while 65% concerned epidemiology. The top three most prolific countries were Sweden (n = 31), Germany (n = 15), and Switzerland (n = 13). We found 12 authors who had greater than five publications on the list. Also, the most published journal was Clinical Oral Implants Research.

CONCLUSION

This study provides insight into the characteristics and quality of the most highly cited peri-implantitis literature. This revealed a deficiency in terms of the number of studies on treatment strategies as well as a higher level of evidence studies among the most- impactful papers on peri-implantitis at the moment.

A bibliometric analysis: Current status and frontier trends of Schwann cells in neurosciences

Background

This review aims to present a comprehensive bibliometric analysis related to Schwann cells (SCs) in neurosciences from 2012 to 2021.

Methods

We used the Web of Science core collection database to obtain publications on SCs in the field of neurosciences from 2012 to 2021. The obtained data were further visually analyzed by using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and an online bibliometric platform.

Results

We retrieved a total of 1,923 publications related to SCs in neurosciences. The number of publications in this field fluctuates steadily each year, and the number of citations is increasing year by year. The United States is leading the field, with LERU and the University OF London as influential institutions, Jessen KR and Feltri ML as the most representative authors, and GLIA and JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE as authoritative journals in the field. Meanwhile, we predict that a more in-depth study of autophagy and phagocytosis functions of SCs and the key regulator c-Jun will probably be a hot spot for future research.

Conclusion

This study summarizes the current research results and predicts research trends for further research, which will facilitate researchers in quickly understanding the current state of research in the field while referring to new research directions.

A Bibliometric Mapping Study of the Literature on Oral Health-related Quality of Life

BACKGROUND

Oral health is an indispensable component of overall health, and oral health status significantly influences people's physical, mental, and social well-being. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), an important and widely used dental patient-reported outcome (dPRO), is attracting more and more researchers' attention and interest. This study aimed to analyze and map the existing scientific literature regarding OHRQoL through a bibliometric approach, including a summary of the characteristics of OHRQoL-related publications, the identification of prolific entities, high-frequency keywords analysis, and research trend analysis via periodic high-impact keywords.

METHODS

A literature search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection to collect OHRQoL-related original research and review articles. After examination and deduplication, the following bibliometric information was extracted from each article: title, abstract, keywords, authors, affiliations, geographic origin (countries/regions), year of publication, journal name, and references. Various scientometric mapping tools including Microsoft Office spreadsheet, VOSviewer, Biblioshiny R-package software, and Scimago Graphica were used to analyze basic bibliometric parameters, leading producers, high-impact keywords, and research trends.

RESULTS

A total of 3324 OHRQoL-related articles (3119 original research articles and 205 review papers) were collected, which received 65,704 citations. A total of 9950 authors from 2429 organizations contributed to this body of research. Prolific authors from Europe, USA, Brazil, New Zealand, China, and Canada were identified, and they also centered collaboration clusters in the co-author network. Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology was the most prolific journal. Twenty-one keywords with more than 200 occurrences, and 23 keywords with more than 150 occurrences, were identified for publications of 1994-2021 and 2012-2021, respectively. Keyword analysis revealed hot topics such as instrument development and validation, studies targeting children and adolescents, as well as clinical studies in operative dentistry, implantology, orthodontics, and community dentistry. Oral Health Impact Profile is the most commonly used instrument in OHRQoL-related research.

CONCLUSIONS

OHRQoL is an impactful topic in dental health care as it is not only useful in dental research and patient-centered clinical outcome measures but also provides valuable guidance in dental public health administration and policy making. OHRQoL-related research presents a dynamic landscape and is expected to continue presenting high productivity and broad application in the future.

Bibliometric analysis of research publications in three major orthodontic journals during 2012–2021

Objectives:

This study conducted a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of articles published from 2012 to 2021 in three orthodontic journals: The American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO), The Angle Orthodontist (AO), and European Journal of Orthodontics (EJO).

Material and Methods:

Eligible articles published from 2012 to 2021 in AJODO, AO, and EJO were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database and subsequently processed using CiteSpace software to generate their characteristics, including authorship, institution, geographic origin, keywords, and citation profiles.

Results:

The three orthodontic journals published 4001 articles from 370 institutions in 95 countries from 2012 to 2021. The AJODO published the most articles (45.5%) followed by AO (31.3%) and EJO (23.2%). The most prolific country was the United States (US), followed by Brazil, South Korea, China, and Turkey. The authors from the US were heavily engaged in international collaborations, especially with South Korea and Brazil. The country and institutions with the highest citation counts per publication were Italy and the University of Bern (Switzerland), respectively. Pandis N was the most prolific author, and Proffit W was the most-cited author in the 4001 publications. The keywords that emerged most frequently were “children” followed by “orthodontic treatment” and “malocclusion.” Four of the 10 most-cited articles were related to digital dental technology.

Conclusion:

This bibliometric analysis provides a complete picture of the research published in three major orthodontic journals over the past decade. It comprehensively analyzes the authorship, country of origin, institutions, keywords, and citation profiles of the articles.

Scientific production on silicate-based endodontic materials: evolution and current state: a bibliometric analysis

OBJECTIVES

To perform a bibliometric analysis on silicate-based biomaterials in endodontics; to elucidate the evolution and distribution of scientific production regarding research on these biomaterials, the authors and institutions involved, and the most used descriptors/keywords in this field.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A general advanced broad search was performed in Web of Science Core Collection, using the terms "Silicate" and "Endod*." By means of the "Analyze Results" and "Citation Analysis" tools from Web of Science, bibliometric data were extracted. Bibliometric networks on co-authorship and keyword co-occurrence were illustrated using VOSviewer software tool.

RESULTS

Research in the field of silicate-based endodontic materials in endodontics has followed an exponential crescent tendency over the period between 1995 and 2020. Two major co-authorship networks lead the research production in the field, headed by Gandolfi MG and Prati C, and Rodríguez-Lozano FJ and Forner L; respectively. "Mineral trioxide aggregate," "MTA", "Biocompatibility," "Biodentine," and "In vitro" were the terms with the highest occurrence. The modal study type in this research area are laboratory studies, representing 77.7% of the total number of records. The relationship between keywords illustrates the recent tendency to assess biological properties of MTA and Biodentine, which could be extrapolated to other silicate-based materials.

CONCLUSIONS

The results from the present study highlight the exponential increase and distribution of scientific production on silicate-based materials in endodontics, along with the modal keywords used as descriptors and the major authorship networks involved. The predominance of laboratory studies in this research field reinforces the need for clinical studies, to extrapolate the reported performance and characteristics of silicate-based materials into the clinical setting.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The present study may aid the clinician's continuing education and evidence-based practice by providing knowledge and facilitating the literature search on the field of silicate-based biomaterials in endodontics.

Bibliometric Analysis of the Current Landscape of Global Scientific Production on the Development of Vaccines against Dental Caries

Objective. To perform a bibliometric analysis of the scientific research on the development of vaccines against dental caries. Methods. An extraction of the scientific production published on the development of vaccines against dental caries between 2011 and 2020 was carried out from the Scopus database. Microsoft Excel was used for the elaboration of tables and SciVal for the bibliometric analysis of the data, which were divided into indicators of production, impact, and collaboration. Finally, VOSviewer was used for co-occurrence analysis of keywords and collaborative networks. Results. 106 studies were retrieved from the Scopus database, which were conducted on the development of dental caries vaccines within the years 2011–2020. Wuhan University, in China, was the university with the highest scientific production on the subject, with 4 publications. Regarding the most productive journals, the first place was occupied by the Journal of Dental Research with 7 publications. The highest percentage of the documents analyzed was in quartile 1 journals and in the national collaboration pattern. Conclusion. Most of the manuscripts regarding the development of vaccines against dental caries were published in China and in Q1 quartile journals. In addition, Yan Huimin, Yang Jingyi, Zhou Dihan, Yang Yi, Li Yuhong and Fan Mingwen were found to top the list of most productive authors. The Journal of Dental Research was also identified as the most productive and cited journal.

Current Status and Trends in Research on Caries Diagnosis: A Bibliometric Analysis

There are a wide variety of devices for the detection and diagnosis of caries from the initial stages. The purpose of this study was to perform a bibliometric study on research regarding caries diagnosis by identifying the contributing researchers, organizations, countries or regions, journals, and to provide an analysis of keyword co-occurrence and co-authorship networks. An advanced search was performed in Web of Science (WOS) Core Collection database, using the terms “caries diagno*” and “caries detect*” in the “topic” field, from 2013 to 2021. Bibliometric parameters were extracted using WOS’s analyze results tools and VOSviewer software. A total of 816 documents were identified. Most of them, (61.3%) are included in “Dentistry Oral Surgery & Medicine” category within WOS. The largest scientific production on the subject is observed between 2018 and 2021, with a total of 344 records. The most productive author is Mendes FM, followed by Braga MM. The journal with the most articles published on caries diagnosis is Caries Research, with 55 articles (6.74%). The terms with the highest co-occurrence refer to the validity of diagnostic methods, tools or principles used in diagnosis or general aspects related to caries detection and diagnosis.

'CARE compliance' of case reports published in Dental Traumatology in the past two decades: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND/AIMS

The journal Dental Traumatology (DT) is one of the best resources in the field of dental traumatology. It has always encouraged publication of case reports of good quality. The CARE statement (2011) was developed for uniform and transparent reporting of cases in medical sciences. Since case reports are inseparable from the DT literature, the aim of this bibliometric-analysis was to evaluate the case reports published in the DT in the last two decades (2001-2021) and assess their compliance regarding CARE guidelines for elucidating the trends in DT and the reporting quality of these papers.

METHODOLOGY

Two authors independently observed the tables of contents in all issues of DT from 2002-2021 and identified case reports. Selected articles were scrutinized to determine their eligibility. Data extraction was performed, case reports were segregated into domains, and their CARE compliance was evaluated by using a self-designed-validated method. Differences between the case reports published in two decades (2002-2011 and 2012-2021) were analysed with the Chi-square test.

RESULTS

A total of 1612 articles published between February 2002 and October 2021 were scrutinized to identify 357 case reports with 277 from the period of 2002-2011 and 80 between 2012 and 2021. The highest number of case reports originated from Asia (2002-2011:135, 2012-2021:28). The CARE compliances of the majority of reports in the decade of 2002-2011 were between 75 and 85% (good) while the CARE compliances of the majority of reports from 2012-2021 were between 85 and 95% (very good) or >95% (excellent). These differences were statistically significant (p < .005).

CONCLUSIONS

The number of case reports published in the decade of 2002-2011 were more than three times the number of case reports published in the decade of 2012-2021. The highest number of reports in both decades were from Asia and belonged to the therapeutic and prognostic domains. The CARE compliances of the reports in the decade of 2012-2021 were better than those from 2002-2011.

Worldwide trends on molar incisor and deciduous molar hypomineralisation research: a bibliometric analysis over a 19-year period

AIM

To identify the worldwide trends in scientific evidence and gaps in knowledge regarding molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH) and deciduous molar hypomineralisation/hypomineralised second primary molars (DMH/HSPM), exploring the contribution of authors and countries, possible etiological factors and proposed treatments, in order to guide future research in the area.

METHODS

Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Lilacs/BBO, Embase and Google Scholar. Studies employing the terms MIH, DMH/HSPM and their linguistic variations were included. The following data were extracted: title, authors, year and journal of publication and first author's affiliation country. Studies were categorized according to topic, dentition, study design, etiological factors and types of treatments. Categories were analysed in relation to their distribution, co-occurrence, cross-correlation and/or autocorrelation.

RESULTS

Five hundred and three studies were included. The most published authors were Manton D (n = 47), de Souza JF (n = 22) and Ghanim A (n = 22) and four main collaboration clusters have been identified. Most of the studies were conducted on permanent dentition (MIH) (87.4%); with observational design (57.2%). The "European Archives of Paediatric Dentistry" was the most published journal (13.3%) and a significant increase in the number of publications was observed in the last decade. MIH was most studied in relation to prevalence/incidence, systemic factors involved in its aetiology and treatment with composite restorations, while a gap in knowledge was observed for extraction and sealants. Less studies were published on DMH/HSPM and most of them evaluated risk factors or prevalence/incidence. The gap of knowledge was observed in relation to treatments and patient's quality of life.

CONCLUSIONS

This bibliometric review provided a comprehensive overview of research in MIH and DMH/HSPM over the past 19 years. Within the limitations of the present study, the following conclusions can be drawn: global trends point to an increasing peak of scientific publication, especially in the last decade, while there is a shortage of clinical studies on treatments, mainly evaluating tooth extractions. Finally the multifactorial nature should be further explored, considering environmental and systemic factors together.

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS IN DENTAL JOURNALS ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS

BACKGROUND

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in dentistry provide essential evidence for dentists to practice evidence-based dentistry. This study aimed to analyze the scientific impacts of the RCTs conducted among children and adolescents published in dental journals and summarize the main contents of these studies.

METHODS

An electronic literature search was conducted in the database Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection by two independent reviewers in June 2020, without an initial time limit. Articles reporting on RCTs conducted among children and adolescents in dental fields were identified. The most cited articles (the top 100 articles based on total citation counts and citation density) were selected. The bibliometric data were exported from the database WoS for further analysis. The citation counts were cross-checked in Google Scholar. In addition, the main content of the included RCTs was extracted and summarized.

RESULTS

A total of 132 papers published in 28 journals reporting on RCTs in dentistry on children and adolescents were included in this study. The mean total citation count (within WoS) of the included RCTs was 60.0, ranging from 17 to 300, and the mean citation density value was 4.6, ranging from 1.3 to 15.0. The majority of the articles were in the thematic field of cariology (n = 79, 59.8%). Other thematic fields, orthodontology (20.5%), endodontology (5.3%), behavior science and quality of life (5.3%), oral and maxillofacial surgery (3.8%), oral hygiene (3.8%) and periodontology (1.5%) were involved as well. Around one-fifth of the articles (n = 23) were produced by the United States, and the included articles were most cited by the publications (n = 1937) from the United States as well.

CONCLUSIONS

A wide range of dental topics were covered in the included RCTs conducted among children and adolescents. These top-cited RCTs mainly focus on the thematic field of cariology. The United States is an influential country with a large number of publication outputs and citations.

The 100 most-cited papers in dentistry for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders: Bibliometric profile of scientific research

AIM

To conduct a bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited papers in dentistry for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.

METHODS AND RESULTS

A search strategy was constructed and conducted at the Web of Science in the category of "Dentistry, Oral Surgery, and Medicine". The following information was extracted from each paper: title, authorship, year of publication, title of the journal, study subject, study design, age range of sample participants, type of disability, institution, country and continent, number of citations and citation density. Google Scholar and Scopus were used to crosscheck the number of citations of the most-cited papers. The VOSviewer software was used to generate bibliometric network maps. The papers received 4453 citations in Web of Science, ranging from 30 to 106 citations. Most papers were published by the USA (35%), had an observational design (78%) and the main subject was epidemiology (31%). Most studies focused on individuals with Down syndrome (34%) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (18%) and were published in the Journal of Periodontology (10%) and the Pediatric Dentistry Journal (7%).

CONCLUSION

Most of the studies included in this review were characterized as epidemiological studies. Future research should focus on behavior guidance, dental education, and access to dental services.

A bibliometric analysis of the top 100 most-cited case reports and case series in Endodontic journals

AIM

To identify the top 100 most-cited case reports and case series published in Endodontic journals and to analyse their bibliometric characteristics.

METHODOLOGY

The Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science (WoS), Scopus and PubMed databases were used to identify the top 100 most-cited case reports and case series in Endodontic journals. Complete bibliographic records of the selected case reports and case series were exported in plain text or BibTeX format and imported into the R environment for statistical computing and graphics. The following parameters were then analysed: names and affiliations of the authors, title, year of publication, journal of publication, first author, corresponding author, literature cited within reports, language, citation counts, impact factor of the journal, keywords, Keywords Plus and research topic.

RESULTS

In total, 88 case reports and 12 case series published in English between 1977 and 2016 were identified as the most-cited reports in the field of Endodontics. The terms "case report(s)" or "case series" were not included in the title of 57 articles. The number of authors per report ranged from one to seven, with the average number of co-authors per report being 3.14. The most-cited author was M Trope (University of Pennsylvania, USA). The University of Washington and Private Practice, Cetraro, Italy, were the most productive institutions. The country whose case reports received the largest total number of citations was the United States. The largest number of the most-cited reports appeared in 2002, 2004 and 2007 (n = 7, respectively). According to the WoS database, the total number of citations ranged from 42 to 453, with the average number of citations per report being 79.97. The majority of the top 100 most-cited articles were published in the Journal of Endodontics and the International Endodontic Journal. The most frequently used author keywords were revascularization and mineral trioxide aggregate. The majority of the case reports and case series dealt with topics related to pulp regeneration.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study provides a comprehensive overview on the progress, trends and current directions in clinical practice within the field of Endodontics.

The 100 most-cited articles in orthodontic journals in the last 20 years

INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to identify and analyze the 100 most-cited articles published in orthodontic scientific journals in the past 21 years.

METHODS

The research was conducted in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science data citation index, considering articles from 2000 to 2020 and the category of dentistry, oral surgery, and medicine. Information about the number of citations, citations per year, title, authors, year of publication, the title of scientific journals, type of study, keywords, and thematic field were extracted for each article. Descriptive statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the collected data. The Pearson correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between publication and the number of citations received. The VOSviewer software (Leiden University Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden, the Netherlands) was used to generate the keyword cooccurrence network.

RESULTS

The number of citations of the 100 selected articles ranged from 122 to 547. The journal with the largest number of cited articles was the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Most of the papers were cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, and the most frequent thematic fields among the selected articles were anchorage, root resorption, and rapid maxillary expansion. Orthodontic treatment, anchorage, and root resorption were the most frequent keywords.

CONCLUSIONS

Bibliometric analysis of citations revealed a greater centralization of orthodontic studies. Most of the articles were published in a single journal and by one country. Anchorage is a trending topic in orthodontics, and cross-sectional and longitudinal studies are the most-cited types of papers.

Worldwide Trends of Research on Periprosthetic Osteolysis: A Bibliometric Study Based on VOSviewer

BACKGROUND

Due to the increasing number of joint arthroplasty operations, surgeons have begun to devote more attention to the problem of periprosthetic osteolysis. In recent years, numerous studies have focussed on periprosthetic osteolysis, but there have been no relevant bibliometric studies.

METHODS

We searched the Web of Science database for relevant articles concerning periprosthetic osteolysis published from 1965 to 2021. The following data were extracted: authors' name, article title, publication journal, impact factor (IF) of the journal in the publication year, keywords, topic of the article, publication country/region, the sum of times cited, H-index and funding sources. VOSviewer and Excel 2019 were used to conduct the bibliometric study and visualise the analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 1255 publications were included. In all selected articles, "orthopaedics" became the dominant topic (662 of 1255, 52.75%). The most productive years were 2018 and 2019, with a total of 83 publications. The Journal of Arthroplasty published the most articles on periprosthetic osteolysis (110 publications). The United States of America published the most articles (525, 41.83%). The latest keywords "continuous intramedullary infusion", "erythromycin", "autophagy", "bone-resorbing cells" and "proinflammatory cytokines" both appeared in five articles in 2017.

CONCLUSION

This bibliometric study showed that there is a growing trend in published articles related to periprosthetic osteolysis. Journal of Arthroplasty was the top productive journal on periprosthetic osteolysis. The United States of America dominates studies of periprosthetic osteolysis. "Continuous intramedullary infusion", "erythromycin", "autophagy", "bone-resorbing cells" and "proinflammatory cytokines" may be new research hotspots in the field of periprosthetic osteolysis.

The 50 most-cited articles on clear aligner treatment: A bibliometric and visualized analysis

INTRODUCTION

Research on clear aligner treatment (CAT) has increased in recent years. In this study, we aimed to perform a bibliometric and visualized analysis to identify and critically assess the 50 most highly cited articles on CAT.

METHODS

Web of Science was selected as a data source and consulted until March 2020 to identify all articles potentially relevant to the analysis. All the eligible articles were collected until 50 manuscripts were listed. Article-based parameters, journal-based parameters, and author-based parameters were registered to perform the bibliometric analysis. Keywords were automatically harvested from the selected articles to implement the visualized analysis.

RESULTS

The search identified a total of 378 articles; the total number of citations of the selected articles varied from 15 to 112. The average number of citations per year varied from 1.15 to 13.83. The predominant study design was clinical (31.7%). Over the 15 journals in which the most cited articles were published, the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics published the majority of those included in the list (14) and also received the greatest number of citations (671). A total of 195 authors contributed to the 50 most cited articles; a significant portion of them (26) were unaffiliated with academic institutions. A total of 184 keywords were gathered from the article list.

CONCLUSIONS

The number of citations on CAT is expected to grow steadily in parallel with the rising number of research projects. The present work identifies the most influential articles on CAT and their characteristics, placing emphasis on the journals, the authors, and the topics addressed.

Scientific Production in Dentistry: The National Panorama through a Bibliometric Study of Italian Academies

Background

The academic scientific research in the field of dentistry has rapidly increased in the last 20 years under the pressure of the multidisciplinary technological advancements and the growing demand for new predictable and cost-effective techniques and materials. The aim of the present investigation was to analyze the academic scientific production conducted by Italian Academies and Dental Schools.

Methods

The list of MED/28 academic researchers, associate and full professors, and academic affiliations was collected from the national database of CINECA to evaluate the scientific output of the Italian Universities. The complete list of scientific contributions and the bibliometric parameters were recorded in the Scopus database.

Results

The scientific production of 37 Italian Universities, 416 researchers, and 23689 papers was evaluated. The measurement of total academic papers, citations, h-index, and relative citation ratio (RCR) was calculated. The study data showed an increase of the academic scientific production over the last 5 years.

Conclusions

The results presented show how scientific research is increasingly pursued by dental clinicians.
