Allometric growth and reproductive biology traits of pikeperch Sander lucioperca at the southern edge of its range

Heavy metals and minerals contents in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), carp (Cyprinus carpio) and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) from Sidi Salem Reservoir (Tunisia): health risk assessment related to fish consumption

The aim of this study was to investigate heavy metals and selected minerals contents in filets of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), carp (Cyprinus carpio) and flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus), the major fish species produced in Sidi-Salem reservoir; the largest Tunisian freshwater ecosystem. Concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cd, Pb and Hg were determined by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry, while concentrations of Na and P were determined by flame photometry and spectrophotometry, respectively. Results concerning heavy metals are considered quantitatively reliable for Hg and Cd but must be taken with precautions concerning Pb levels as the LOD (limit of detection) of the analytical process was higher than acceptable limit. They showed greater accumulations of both Hg and Cd in filets of pikeperch than in filets of carp and mullet, but none of the values exceeded the normative maximum levels (0.500 and 0.050 mg kg^-1 w.w., respectively). Considering provisional intakes, target hazard quotient and hazard index, estimated for a fish portion per week, consumption of any of the species did not appear to be potentially hazardous for the health as they were far below threshold values. A fish portion would provide substantial amounts (>15% of daily requirements) in essential mineral nutrients (P, Mg and Fe) and thus should be considered an interesting contribution to a healthy diet. It is strongly advocated to authorities including freshwater fish in the official national annual control survey of contaminants in fishery products, which in addition to guaranteeing security of consumers, would also allow diversifying valorisation opportunities and thus increase the economic value of this fish production.

Continuous lighting inhibits the onset of reproductive cycle in pikeperch males and females

The effect of a constant photoperiod on the inhibition of male and female reproductive cycles was studied in pikeperch Sander lucioperca. Over a 153-day period, batches of pikeperch (2 years, 950 g) breeders were kept under either under natural or artificial photoperiod conditions (24L:0D) (30-35 fish/tank, triplicate) and sampled in late June (start of the photoperiod decrease in natural conditions), late August (start of temperature decrease) and late November (exogenous vitellogenesis) (7-10 fish/tank/sampling date). Morphological parameters, sexual steroids, alkaline-labile phosphate (µg/mL) levels and gamete developmental stages were investigated. Gonado-somatic index (%), developmental stages and sexual steroid levels (17β-estradiol, testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone, ng/mL) in both sexes and oocyte diameter (µm) and plasma alkaline-labile phosphate (µg/mL) in females were lower in response to a continuous lighting (24L:0D). In both sexes, continuous lighting applied in June for 153 days totally inhibited or delayed the onset of the reproductive cycle. In conclusion, photoperiod manipulation can be used to delay the pikeperch reproductive cycle, even if temperature decreases. This is the first report of the inhibitory effect of photoperiod on the onset of the reproductive cycle in pikeperch.

Comparative study of pikeperch Sander lucioperca (Percidae; Linnaeus, 1758) eggs and larvae from wild females or from captive females fed chopped marine fish

Morphometric characteristics, proximal composition and fatty acids profiles of eggs and larvae at hatching and mouth opening were studied as indicators for assessing the potential differences between spawns obtained from wild or captive females of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca). Captive females were acclimated to hatchery conditions and fed to satiation with chopped marine fish for more than a year, guaranteeing that captivity covered the full cycle of gonad maturation. The number of larvae obtained from the spawnings did not differ between captive and wild females, but both mean diameter and mean weight of the eggs collected from the captive females were significantly larger. Proximal compositions were similar in eggs and larvae from both groups, but fatty acids (FA) profiles showed striking differences: polyunsaturated FA consisted mainly of linoleic acid in eggs and larvae from wild females, while they consisted mainly of long chains of n-3 series in eggs and larvae from captive females. The diet of captive females largely modified the FA profiles of eggs and of hatching or mouth opening larvae, but did not affect the growth potential of early larvae, demonstrating that they were able to satisfy their early physiological needs regardless of the striking differences in their FA.
