Threonine and tryptophan ratios fed to nursery pigs*

Evaluation of a novel threonine source for nursery pig diets

Four hundred and eighty (PIC 337 X 1050, PIC Genus, Hendersonville, TN) pigs were used to evaluate a novel threonine source (ThrPro, CJ America Bio, Fort Dodge, IA) for nursery pigs from approximately 7 to 20 kg body weight (BW). After weaning, pigs were sorted by sex and fed a common diet for 1 wk. Upon completion of the first week, pigs were sorted into randomized complete blocks, equalized by weight, within 16 replications. Pigs were allocated to one of three dietary treatments: positive control (POS)—standard ileal digestible threonine-to-lysine ratio (SID; Thr:Lys) 0.60, negative control (NEG)—SID Thr:Lys ≤0.46, and alternative Thr source (TEST)—SID Thr:Lys 0.60. The alternative Thr source included fermentative biomass and was assumed to contain 75% Thr and a digestibility coefficient of 100% based on the manufacturer’s specifications. All other nutrients met or exceeded the NRC recommendations. Growth and intake data were analyzed as repeated measures with a compound symmetry covariance structure using the MIXED procedure in SAS 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) with pen as the experimental unit. Treatment, phase, the interaction between treatment and phase, and block were included as fixed effects in the model. Differences in total removals were tested using Fisher’s Exact Test of PROC FREQ. Results were considered significant at P ≤ 0.05 and considered a trend at P > 0.05 and P ≤ 0.10. During the first 14 d, pigs fed TEST had decreased gain-to-feed ratio (G:F; 0.77 vs. 0.80, P = 0.022) compared to POS and increased G:F (0.77 vs. 0.73, P < 0.001) compared to NEG. Over days 14–28, pigs fed TEST had similar G:F (0.71 vs. 0.70, P = 0.112) compared to POS and increased G:F (0.71 vs. 0.63, P < 0.001) compared to NEG. Overall (days 0–28), pigs fed TEST had similar average daily gain (ADG; 0.47 vs. 0.47 kg/d, P = 0.982) and G:F (0.76 vs. 0.74, P = 0.395) compared to POS and increased ADG (0.47 vs. 0.43 kg/d, P < 0.001) and G:F (0.76 vs. 0.67, P < 0.001) compared to NEG. The average daily feed intake was not significantly different across treatments for the entirety of the study. In conclusion, the replacement of crystalline L-Thr with a novel Thr source resulted in similar growth performance in nursery pigs from approximately 7 to 20 kg.

Effects of different dietary tryptophan : lysine ratios and sanitary conditions on growth performance, plasma urea nitrogen, serum haptoglobin and ileal histomorphology of weaned pigs

A total of 180 mixed-sex pigs (Duroc × (Yorkshire × Landrace); average initial body weight of 7.36 ± 0.2 kg) weaned at 21 ± 1 days were fed corn-soybean meal-wheat-based diets to determine the optimal standardized ileal digestible (SID) tryptophan to lysine ratio (Trp : Lys) in a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement (two sanitary conditions: clean (CL) and unclean (UCL), and five dietary treatments (SID Trp : Lys (16, 18, 20, 22 and 24%)). In each sanitary condition, blood was collected on days 0 and 14 to determine plasma urea nitrogen and on day 14, ileal tissue (one pig per pen) was collected for the measurement of gut morphology. Pigs kept under UCL conditions had lower growth rate (P < 0.05) than under CL conditions. Under CL conditions, the estimated optimal SID Trp : Lys for average daily gain (ADG) was 19.7% whereas under UCL conditions these values were 20.5% and 19.0% for ADG and gain-to-feed ratio, respectively. Under CL conditions, increasing SID Trp : Lys reduced (linear, P = 0.05) plasma urea nitrogen concentration but had no effect (P > 0.10) on villous height (VH), crypt depth ( CD) and VH : CD. In conclusion, an SID Trp : Lys to optimize ADG for pigs raised under UCL conditions was higher (4%) than CL conditions.

Níveis de treonina em dietas para leitões (6 a 16 kg) submetidos a diferentes graus de ativação do sistema imune

Este estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar os efeitos dos níveis de treonina da dieta e da ativação do sistema imune sobre o desempenho e as características de carcaça de leitões recém-desmamados. Foram utilizados 360 leitões, 180 machos e 180 fêmeas, desmamados com idade média de 20,3 dias e peso inicial de 5,31 ± 1,23kg. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 5x2, com cinco níveis de treonina total (0,85; 0,95; 1,05; 1,15; 1,25%) e dois níveis de ativação do sistema imune (vacinados e não vacinados), com quatro repetições e nove animais por unidade experimental. Não houve interação entre o nível de treonina e o grau de ativação do sistema imune dos animais para todos os parâmetros avaliados. Os níveis de treonina e a ativação do sistema imune não afetaram os parâmetros de desempenho avaliados. Os níveis de treonina afetaram de forma linear a porcentagem de água e gordura na carcaça e a deposição diária de gordura. Conclui-se que o nível de treonina total de 0,85%, correspondendo a um consumo diário de treonina de 4,29 g/dia, e uma relação treonina: lisina de 55%, atende a exigência de leitões dos seis aos 16kg, sendo que a ativação do sistema imune não causou qualquer efeito negativo sobre o desempenho dos animais.

True ileal digestible tryptophan to lysine ratios in ninety- to one hundred twenty-five-kilogram barrows1

Three experiments were conducted to determine the optimal true ileal digestible (TID) Trp:Lys ratio for 90- to 125-kg barrows. Basal diets contained 0.55% TID Lys and were either corn-based (Exp. 1) or corn- and soybean meal-based (Exp. 2 and 3) diets supplemented with crystalline AA. In addition, each experiment contained a corn-soybean meal control diet. The number of pigs per pen progressively increased, with pigs housed in 2 (n = 82; initial and final BW of 88.5 and 113.6 kg, respectively), 7 (n = 210, initial and final BW of 91.2 and 123.3 kg, respectively), or 20 to 22 (n = 759; initial and final BW of 98.8 and 123.4 kg, respectively) pigs per pen for each successive experiment. Pigs in Exp. 1 were fed 6 incremental additions of L-Trp, equating to TID Trp:Lys ratios of 0.109, 0.145, 0.182, 0.218, 0.255, and 0.290. For the 28-d period, there was a quadratic improvement in G:F (P = 0.05) and ADG (P = 0.08) with increasing TID Trp:Lys, characterized by an improvement in performance of pigs fed the basal diet compared with those consuming diets with a 0.145 TID Trp:Lys ratio, with a plateau thereafter as TID Trp:Lys increased. Pigs fed the control diet had less increase in backfat depth than the average of pigs fed the titration diets (1.30 vs. 4.09 mm, respectively; P = 0.02), but pork quality was unaffected by dietary treatment. Pigs in Exp. 2 were fed 4 incremental additions of L-Trp, equating to TID Trp:Lys ratios of 0.130, 0.165, 0.200, and 0.235. Average daily gain and ADFI increased in a linear fashion with increasing TID Trp:Lys for the 29-d trial (P < 0.01), with quadratic improvements in d-29 BW (P = 0.06) and G:F (P = 0.05). Pigs fed the diet containing a TID Trp:Lys ratio of 0.165 had greater d-29 BW, ADG, G:F, and lower serum urea N concentration than pigs fed the basal diet (P < 0.05), but were similar to pigs fed TID Trp:Lys ratios of 0.200 and 0.235 for all criteria measured. In Exp. 3, TID Trp:Lys ratios of 0.13, 0.15, 0.17, 0.19, and 0.21 were evaluated. The response to increasing TID Trp:Lys was limited to a quadratic (P < 0.10) improvement in G:F with increasing TID Trp:Lys ratios. Maximum G:F was noted at a TID Trp:Lys ratio of 0.17. No relationship was noted between TID Trp:Lys and carcass characteristics. These experiments demonstrate that the minimum TID Trp:Lys ratio for pigs from 90 to 125 kg of BW is at least 0.145, but not greater than 0.17.
