The development changes and correlations of some blood hormone levels and immune indexes during the postnatal period in neonatal calves

Comparison of the peripheral blood leukocyte population between Japanese Black and Holstein calves

Japanese black (JB) calves have greater susceptibility to infectious diseases compared to Holstein (Hol) calves. In order to clarify the differences in cellular immune status between JB and Hol calves, the leukocyte population and lymphocyte proliferative ability were analyzed. In total 200 healthy calves, 1 day to 14 weeks of age, were examined: 105 JB and 95 Hol calves. Lower numbers in peripheral blood and percentage in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of CD3(+)TcR1-N12(+) T cells and major histocompatibility complex class-II(+)CD14(-) B cells were observed in the JB compared to the Hol. The percentage of TcR1-N12(+)CD25(+) T cell in the JB was significantly lower than that of the Hol at 4-6, and 8-10 weeks. Interleukin (IL)-2 sensitivity in the JB was lower than that in the Hol, and significant differences were observed in age groups of 6-8 weeks and 10-14 weeks. These findings indicated that the lower numbers of γδ T cells and B cells in the JB compared to the Hol might be associated with the specificity of the immune systems in JB calves.

Neonatal immune development in the calf and its impact on vaccine response

Clinical, haematological, metabolic and endocrine traits during the first three months of life of suckling simmentaler calves held in a cow-calf operation

Newborn suckling Simmentaler calves (10 males and 9 females) in a cow-calf operation were examined from birth up to the age of 3 months. The average daily gain from 47 to 120 kg was 0.86 kg. Except for higher average daily weight gains and insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations and lower thyroid hormone levels in male than female calves, there were no significant sex differences. Plasma glucose, total protein and immunoglobulin G concentrations increased on day 1 of life, thrombocyte number and plasma triglyceride concentrations rose during the first 7 days, whereas lymphocyte and monocyte percentage and plasma inorganic phosphorus, phospholipid, cholesterol and albumin concentrations increased during the first 14 or 21 days and then remained elevated. Eosinophil percentage increased after 3 weeks and insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations increased over the whole growth period. There were transient elevations of plasma glucagon concentrations up to day 14, of the activity of alkaline phosphatase transiently up to day 7 and of gamma-glutamyltransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities on day 1 of life. Plasma iron concentration transiently decreased up to day 28 and creatine kinase activity up to day 7. Total white blood cell number, neutrophil percentage, packed cell volume and concentrations of haemoglobin, calcium, magnesium (after a transient rise on day 1), non-esterified fatty acids, bilirubin, creatinine, triiodothyronine and thyroxine decreased from birth up to days 42, 56, 28, 28, 21, 84, 14, 14, 7, 14 and 7, respectively. Basophil percentage and concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate, urea and insulin did not exhibit significant age-dependent changes. The behaviour of most traits in the first weeks was the same in suckling calves under study as in non-suckling pre-ruminant calves. However, packed cell volume, red blood cell number, haemoglobin and plasma iron concentrations were higher, whereas glucose and insulin concentrations were lower than normally found in veal calves. On the other hand, concentrations of glucose, insulin and insulin-like growth factor-I in suckling calves in the third month of age were higher than can normally be measured in breeding calves.

Delaying colostrum intake by one day has important effects on metabolic traits and on gastrointestinal and metabolic hormones in neonatal calves

Effects on metabolic and endocrine traits of feeding colostrum on d 1 and 2, then mature milk up to d 7, or glucose or water on d 1, colostrum on d 2 and 3 and then mature milk up to d 7 were studied in calves. Calves fed colostrum within the first 24 h after birth had significantly higher rectal temperatures, heart rates and respiratory frequencies than calves provided only water or glucose. Significantly elevated plasma nonesterified fatty acid and bilirubin concentrations on d 1 and 2 of life in calves fed only water on d 1 compared with calves of the other groups mirrored reduced energy intake. Fecal consistency was significantly higher during wk 1 of life, and gastrin and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide increased only on d 1 and/or 2 of life in calves already fed colostrum on d 1, expressing improved functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. Significantly higher plasma globulin levels up to d 7 in calves fed colostrum on d 1 than in those starting colostrum intake only on d 2 demonstrated significantly enhanced efficiency of gamma-globulin absorption. Furthermore, significantly higher circulating glucose, albumin, insulin, insulin-like growth factor-I concentrations and significantly lower urea levels in calves fed colostrum on d 1 compared with those fed colostrum starting on d 2 of life indicated stimulation of anabolic processes. In conclusion, colostrum intake by calves within the first 24 h of life is needed not only for an adequate immune status, but also to produce the additional important and favorable effects on metabolic and endocrine traits and on vitality.
