Goltz syndrome: a rare case of father-to-daughter transmission

An 8-year-old girl presented to us with skin-coloured to yellowish soft compressible papules, intermixed with hypopigmented and hyperpigmented macules in a Blaschkoid pattern, and 'lobster-claw deformity' affecting her bilateral feet. Additional examination findings included short stature, facial asymmetry, low-set ears, hypodontia, enamel hypoplasia, tonsillar enlargement and spina-bifida occulta at S1-3 vertebral level. A diagnosis of Goltz syndrome was suspected clinically, which was confirmed on skin biopsy. Her father also had hypopigmented and hyperpigmented macules in a Blaschkoid distribution, 'lobster-claw' deformity and kyphoscoliosis. None of the other family members were affected.

Focal dermal hypoplasia: ultrastructural abnormalities of the connective tissue

We followed over 10 years three girls with focal dermal hypoplasia syndrome. The histopathological changes demonstrated at the optical level an hypoplastic dermis with thin and scarce collagen bundles and a marked diminution of elastic fibers. Mature adipose tissue was found scattered within the papillary and reticular dermis. No alterations in the basal membrane were observed by immunocytochemical or ultrastructural techniques. Ultrastructurally, in the skin-affected areas, loosely arranged collagen bundles composed of few fibrils were seen scattered in the extracellular matrix. Scarce elastic fibers of normal morphology were also observed. Fibroblasts were smaller, oval-shaped, and diminished in number with a poorly developed cytoplasm. In these fibroblasts, the most conspicuous feature was a remarkable and irregular thickening of the nuclear fibrous lamina. Taking into account that a common link between all laminopaties may be a failure of stem cells to regenerate mesenchymal tissue, this failure would induce the dermal hypoplasia observed in our patients presenting Goltz syndrome.

Delleman (oculocerebrocutaneous) syndrome: few variations in a classical case

Delleman syndrome involves a group of congenital abnormalities affecting the eye, skin and central nervous system. It is a rare and sporadic disorder. We report on a 4-year-old male child who presented to us with oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome featuring: focal alopecia on the left side of the scalp, left periorbital skin appendages, a left-sided orbital dermoid, a large left-sided intracranial cyst,optic atrophy. About 35 such cases have been reported in the literature so far. To our knowledge optic atrophy associated with oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome has not been reported previously. Our patient had only a single seizure and his IQ was normal.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome (EEC): report of a case with perioral papillomatosis

We report a 13-year-old boy with ectodermal dysplasia, ectrodactyly, and syndactyly, hypospadias, photophobia, conductive hearing loss, and perioral papillomatosis. His father had ectrodactyly and hypotrichosis. The clinical picture suggested ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome. The presence of perioral papillomatosis, classically seen in Goltz syndrome, has been reported only once before in EEC syndrome.

Gorlin-Goltz: what's in a name?

This paper describes the clinical features of two very distinct syndromes with similar names: Gorlin-Goltz and Goltz-Gorlin Syndromes. A case report is presented that highlights the differences between these syndromes. To avoid errors in diagnosis because of the similarity in names, the authors caution that, based on additional information now available, the preferred names should be Focal Dermal Hypoplasia syndrome for Goltz-Gorlin syndrome and Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma syndrome for Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz-Gorlin) syndrome with taurodontism

This paper is a case report of a 10-year-old girl with focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) who presented for dental care. She displayed many of the well-documented oral features associated with this syndrome. Additionally, she had taurodontism of a permanent mandibular molar. Although taurodontism affected only one tooth in this patient, the presentation of taurodontism with FDH has not been reported previously.

Focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz syndrome): report of two cases with minor cutaneous and extracutaneous manifestations

Two women, ages 33 and 16 years, had focal dermal hypoplasia (Goltz syndrome) with unusual, minimal clinical manifestations. The lesions consisted of patchy, atrophic, scaly, telangiectatic macules arranged in a linear pattern along Blaschko's lines, involving the anterior and lateral aspects of both legs (patient 1) and the anterolateral aspect of the left leg (patient 2). Type I partial syndactyly involving the second and the third toes in both patients was also present. The clinical and histopathologic features and diagnostic difficulties of cases of this disorder with minimal cutaneous and extracutaneous manifestations are discussed.
