Mechanism and application of Lactobacillus in type 2 diabetes-associated periodontitis

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accelerates the progression of periodontitis through diverse pathways. Abnormal immune responses, excessive activation of inflammation, increased levels of advanced glycation end products, and oxidative stress have defined roles in the pathophysiological process of T2DM-associated periodontitis. Furthermore, in the periodontium of diabetic individuals, there are high levels of advanced glycation end-products and glucose. Meanwhile, progress in microbiomics has revealed that dysbacteriosis caused by T2DM also contributes to the progression of periodontitis. Lactobacillus, owing to its fine-tuning function in the local microbiota, has sparked tremendous interest in this field. Accumulating research on Lactobacillus has detailed its beneficial role in both diabetes and oral diseases. In this study, we summarize the newly discovered mechanisms underlying Lactobacillus-mediated improvement of T2DM-associated periodontitis and propose the application of Lactobacillus in the clinic.

Diversity and probiotic characterisation of yeast isolates in the bovine gastrointestinal tract

The use of yeasts as a feed supplement for cattle can promote animal development and performance. However, for the positive results to be consistent, strains with probiotic properties must be selected. The objective of this study was to isolate and identify yeasts present in the bovine feces and evaluate their probiotic potential together with strains previously isolated from the rumen (preliminary study). A total of 193 isolates were studied, including 139 isolates (19 species) from fecal samples from 11 different animals (Bos taurus and Bos indicus) and 54 strains previously isolated from rumen fluid (Bos taurus). The yeast population in the feces ranged from 3.51 to 4.99 log CFU/g, with Candida pararugosa being the most abundant (isolated from the feces of six samples analysed). Isolates were selected that had negative results in the safety tests (hemolytic activity, DNAse, and gelatinase) and had percentages greater than 35 and 70% for hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation, respectively. In addition, selected isolates had percentages greater than 77.7 and 74.7% for coaggregation with pathogenic strains of Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens, respectively. The isolates with percentage growth at 39 °C greater than 64.6% and viability greater than 96.7% were selected for survival testing under bovine gastrointestinal conditions. After the tests, the seven best isolates were selected, belonging to the species Candida pararugosa (L60, CCMA 928 and CCMA 930) and Pichia kudriavzevii (L97, L100, CCMA904, CCMA 907). The selected isolates were exopolysaccharide producers. Based on the results of the evaluated properties, the seven selected isolates were classified as potential probiotics for cattle.

Oral Lactobacillus species and their probiotic capabilities in patients with periodontitis and periodontally healthy individuals

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to identify oral Lactobacillus species and characterize their adhesion properties and antibacterial activity in patients with periodontitis compared with periodontally healthy individuals.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three hundred and fifty-four isolates from the saliva, subgingival, and tongue plaque of 59 periodontitis patients and 59 healthy individuals were analyzed. Oral Lactobacillus species were identified through the culture method in the modified MRS medium and confirmed by molecular testing. Moreover, the radial diffusion assay and cell culture methods were used to determine the antibacterial activities of oral strains against oral pathogens and their adhesion activity in vitro.

RESULTS

67.7% of the cases and 75.7% of the control samples were positive for the Lactobacillus species. Lacticaseibacillus paracasei and Limosilactobacillus fermentum were the dominant species in the case group, whereas Lacticaseibacillus casei and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum were dominant in the control group. Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus gasseri had higher antibacterial effects against oral pathogens. Moreover, Ligilactobacillus salivarius and L. fermentum demonstrated the highest ability to adhere to oral mucosal cells and salivary-coated hydroxyapatite.

CONCLUSION

L. crispatus, L. gasseri, L. fermentum, and L. salivarius can be introduced as probiotic candidates since they demonstrated appropriate adherence to oral mucosal cells and salivary-coated hydroxyapatite and also antibacterial activities. However, further studies should be conducted to assess the safety of probiotic interventions using these strains in patients with periodontal disease.

Lactobacillus fermentum attenuates the alveolar bone loss in ligature-induced periodontitis in mice

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the effects of Lactobacillus fermentum BELF11 on periodontitis in mice (LIP).

METHODS

Sixty mice were randomly assigned to a control group (CTL), LIP/PBS group (LIP and PBS applied), or LIP/BELF11 group (LIP and L. fermentum BELF11 applied). For 14 days, PBS or L. fermentum BELF11 was applied twice daily to the mice in the LIP/PBS or LIP/BELF11 group, respectively. After 14 days, radiographic, histological, and pro-inflammatory cytokine assessments were conducted.

RESULTS

The LIP/PBS and LIP/BELF11 groups demonstrated greater alveolar bone loss than the CTL group (p < 0.05). The LIP/BELF11 group showed significantly reduced alveolar bone loss on the mesial side compared to the LIP/PBS group. Histologically, the LIP/BELF11 group showed consistent patterns of connective tissue fiber arrangement, lower levels of inflammatory infiltration, less alveolar bone loss, and higher alveolar bone density than the LIP/PBS group, despite showing more signs of destruction than the CTL group. The LIP/BELF11 group also exhibited significantly lower levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines than the LIP/PBS group.

CONCLUSIONS

L. fermentum BELF11 inhibits alveolar bone loss and periodontitis progression by regulating pro-inflammatory cytokine production. These findings suggest that L. fermentum BELF11 may be a potential adjunctive therapy in periodontal treatment.

Dental plaque-inspired versatile nanosystem for caries prevention and tooth restoration

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent human diseases resulting from tooth demineralization caused by acid production of bacteria plaque. It remains challenges for current practice to specifically identify, intervene and interrupt the development of caries while restoring defects. In this study, inspired by natural dental plaque, a stimuli-responsive multidrug delivery system (PMs@NaF-SAP) has been developed to prevent tooth decay and promote enamel restoration. Classic spherical core-shell structures of micelles dual-loaded with antibacterial and restorative agents are self-assembled into bacteria-responsive multidrug delivery system based on the pH-cleavable boronate ester bond, followed by conjugation with salivary-acquired peptide (SAP) to endow the nanoparticle with strong adhesion to tooth enamel. The constructed PMs@NaF-SAP specifically adheres to tooth, identifies cariogenic conditions and intelligently releases drugs at acidic pH, thereby providing antibacterial adhesion and cariogenic biofilm resistance, and restoring the microarchitecture and mechanical properties of demineralized teeth. Topical treatment with PMs@NaF-SAP effectively diminishes the onset and severity of caries without impacting oral microbiota diversity or surrounding mucosal tissues. These findings demonstrate this novel nanotherapy has potential as a promising biomedical application for caries prevention and tooth defect restoration while resisting biofilm-associated diseases in a controlled manner activated by pathological bacteria.

Characterization of the anti-pathogenic, genomic and phenotypic properties of a Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus VHProbi M14 isolate

A strain of lactic acid bacteria from cheese was isolated, that showed strong growth inhibitory effects on Streptococcus mutans. The API 50CH system and 16S rDNA sequencing verified that this was a novel strain, and was named Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus VHProbi M14. The strain inhibited the growth of S. mutans and Fusobacterium nucleatum under mixed culture conditions, coaggregated with S. mutans and F. nucleatum, and reduced the adhesion of S. mutans and F. nucleatum on cultured human primary gingival epithelial (HPGE) cells. The pH, peroxidase and protease sensitivity testing found antibacterial substances of protein- and peptide-like structures in addition to organic acids. The antimicrobial substances were sensitive to hydrolysis with trypsin, papain and pineapple protease and were inactived at temperatures above 100°C. Ammonium sulphate-precipitated proteins from the M14 strain retained the ability to inhibit the growth of S. mutans and F. nucleatum. The M14 strain contained 23 bacteriocin-related genes encoding for metabolites, belonging to class II bacteriocins. The M14 strain also showed inhibitory effects on 8 other pathogenic strains (A. actinomycetemcomitans, C. albicans, E. coli, G. vaginalis, P. acnes, P. gingivalis, S. aureus, S. enteritids), and thus has a broad spectrum of bacterial inhibition. This new isolate has been identified as having potential to be used as a probiotic bacterium in clinical applications.

Bio-inspired special wettability in oral antibacterial applications

Most oral diseases originate from biofilms whose formation is originated from the adhesion of salivary proteins and pioneer bacteria. Therefore, antimicrobial materials are mainly based on bactericidal methods, most of which have drug resistance and toxicity. Natural antifouling surfaces inspire new antibacterial strategies. The super wettable surfaces of lotus leaves and fish scales prompt design of biomimetic oral materials covered or mixed with super wettable materials to prevent adhesion. Bioinspired slippery surfaces come from pitcher plants, whose porous surfaces are infiltrated with lubricating liquid to form superhydrophobic surfaces to reduce the contact with liquids. It is believed that these new methods could provide promising directions for oral antimicrobial practice, improving antimicrobial efficacy.

Encapsulation of Lactobacillus acidophilus in solid lipid microparticles via cryomilling

We herein delved into the microencapsulation of Lactobacillus acidophilus (LA) into solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) via the cryomilling technique. For this aim, a frozen lipid mixture containing LA was pulverized at different times (7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 min) using a cryogenic mixer mill to produce probiotic-loaded SLMs. The impacts of different cryomilling durations on the SLMs properties (morphology, particle size, water activity, polymorphism, crystallinity, and thermal behavior) and the viability of LA were evaluated. Microencapsulation improved the viability of LA in simulated gastrointestinal fluids, heat stress, and different concentrations of salt and sucrose. SLMs also were suitable to be incorporated into foods. However, once the cryomilling time was prolonged, the viability of encapsulated LA declined, and particle size grew. The cryomilling technique showed great potential as an alternative approach for encapsulation due to the lack of solvent, short processing time, and simplicity.

The efficacy of probiotics in the management of intra-oral halitosis: a systematic review

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the efficacy of probiotics in reducing halitosis of dental origin.

METHODS

MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CENTRAL were searched up to and including June 2020. Randomised placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trials in systemically healthy adult patients who were given any form of probiotics to manage halitosis of dental origin were included. Primary outcome measures were organoleptic scores and volatile sulphur concentration levels. Secondary outcome measures were microbiologic parameters and quality of life (QOL).

RESULTS

Of the 301 potentially relevant articles, eight articles were selected for the review. The risk of bias assessment showed that two studies were of low risk of bias, four studies had some concerns, and two studies had a high risk of bias. The beneficial effect of probiotics could neither be confirmed in periodontally treated patients administered with up to 8 weeks of probiotics, nor in periodontitis patients who received both non-surgical periodontal therapy and adjunctive probiotics up to 90 days. Microbiological findings 1 month after probiotics administration and QOL measures showed no significant differences compared to control. Considerable heterogeneity was observed among probiotic administration protocols.

CONCLUSIONS

The available evidence suggests no convincing benefit for the use of probiotics in the management of halitosis. Standardised protocols on recruitment of halitosis subjects and organoleptic measurements are required for future studies on probiotics as an intervention.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The lack of well-conducted studies with a low risk of bias precludes any clinical recommendation. Further research is needed to verify the efficacy of probiotics in the management of intra-oral halitosis.

Formation of Biofilm by Tetragenococcus halophilus Benefited Stress Tolerance and Anti-biofilm Activity Against S. aureus and S. Typhimurium

Tetragenococcus halophilus, a halophilic lactic acid bacterium (LAB), plays an important role in the production of high-salt fermented foods. Generally, formation of biofilm benefits the fitness of cells when faced with competitive and increasingly hostile fermented environments. In this work, the biofilm-forming capacity of T. halophilus was investigated. The results showed that the optimal conditions for biofilm formation by T. halophilus were at 3–9% salt content, 0–6% ethanol content, pH 7.0, 30°C, and on the surface of stainless steel. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) analysis presented a dense and flat biofilm with a thickness of about 24 μm, and higher amounts of live cells were located near the surface of biofilm and more dead cells located at the bottom. Proteins, polysaccharides, extracellular-DNA (eDNA), and humic-like substances were all proved to take part in biofilm formation. Higher basic surface charge, greater hydrophilicity, and lower intracellular lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were detected in T. halophilus grown in biofilms. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging revealed that biofilm cultures of T. halophilus had stronger surface adhesion forces than planktonic cells. Cells in biofilm exhibited higher cell viability under acid stress, ethanol stress, heat stress, and oxidative stress. In addition, T. halophilus biofilms exhibited aggregation activity and anti-biofilm activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella Typhimurium. Results presented in the study may contribute to enhancing stress tolerance of T. halophilus and utilize their antagonistic activities against foodborne pathogens during the production of fermented foods.

Lactobacilli as Anti-biofilm Strategy in Oral Infectious Diseases: A Mini-Review

The spread of biofilm-related diseases in developed countries has led to increased mortality rates and high health care costs. A biofilm is a community of microorganisms that is irreversibly attached to a surface, behaving very differently from planktonic cells and providing resistance to antimicrobials and immune response. Oral diseases are an excellent example of infection associated with the formation of highly pathogenic biofilms. It is generally accepted that, when the oral homeostasis is broken, the overgrowth of pathogens is facilitated. Among them, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans are the main etiological agents of periodontitis, while Streptococcus mutans is strongly associated with the onset of dental caries. Other microorganisms, such as the fungus Candida albicans, may also be present and contribute to the severity of infections. Since the common antibiotic therapies usually fail to completely eradicate biofilm-related oral diseases, alternative approaches are highly required. In this regard, the topical administration of probiotics has recently gained interest in treating oral diseases. Thus, the present mini-review focuses on the possibility of using Lactobacillus spp. as probiotics to counteract biofilm-mediated oral infections. Many evidence highlight that Lactobacillus living cells can impede the biofilm formation and eradicate mature biofilms of different oral pathogens, by acting through different mechanisms. Even more interestingly, lactobacilli derivatives, namely postbiotics (soluble secreted products) and paraprobiotics (cell structural components) are able to trigger anti-biofilm effects too, suggesting that they can represent a novel and safer alternative to the use of viable cells in the management of biofilm-related oral diseases.

Lactic Acid Bacteria Diversity and Characterization of Probiotic Candidates in Fermented Meats

Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms which confer health benefits to the host when administered in adequate amounts. Many lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains have been classified as probiotics and fermented foods are an excellent source of such LAB. In this study, novel probiotic candidates from two fermented meats (pancetta and prosciutto) were isolated and characterized. LAB populations present in pancetta and prosciutto were evaluated and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum was found to be the dominant species. The antagonistic ability of selected isolates against LAB and non-LAB strains was investigated, in particular, the ability to produce anti-microbial compounds including organic acids and bacteriocins. Probiotic characteristics including antibiotic susceptibility, hydrophobicity and autoaggregation capacity; and ability to withstand simulated gastric juice, bile salt, phenol and NaCl were assessed. Among the characterized strains, L. plantarum 41G isolated from prosciutto was identified as the most robust probiotic candidate compared. Results from this study demonstrate that artisanal fermented meat is a rich source of novel strains with probiotic potential.

Probiotic Properties of Lactobacilli and Their Ability to Inhibit the Adhesion of Enteropathogenic Bacteria to Caco-2 and HT-29 Cells

We evaluated the probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria using resistance, safety, and functional assays. A preliminary subtractive screening of nineteen strains was performed based on their survival in simulated gastric and intestinal juice, and cell surface characteristics (hydrophobicity and auto-aggregation). Five strains were selected for further characterization, which included the assessment of their co-aggregation to pathogens, phenol tolerance, antimicrobial activity, and safety. Moreover, their adhesion to Caco-2 and HT-29 cells and the ability to inhibit pathogenic bacteria adhesion were evaluated. All strains had high (≥ 80.0%) survival rates in gastric and intestinal juices. Among them, Lactobacillus brevis CCMA 1284, L. plantarum CCMA 0743, and L. plantarum CCMA 0359 exhibited higher hydrophobicity (95.33, 96.06, and 80.02%, respectively), while L. paracasei CCMA 0504 and L. paracasei CCMA 0505 had the highest auto-aggregation values (45.36 and 52.66%, respectively). However, these last two strains were positive for the DNAse test, which is a safety concern. The CCMA 0359 and CCMA 1284 strains did not show antimicrobial activity, while the CCMA 0505 strain had a higher percentage of adhesion (4.75%) to Caco-2 cells. In the simulated competition and exclusion assays, the CCMA 0743 strain was able to reduce Salmonella adhesion to both cells (Caco-2 and HT-29), but only the CCMA 0743 and CCMA 0505 strains inhibited Escherichia coli adhesion to HT-29 cells in the competition assay. According to the results of these evaluated attributes, this strain showed to be an excellent candidate for probiotic use.

Explorative study on Lactobacillus species and their acid-producing capacity and anti-microbial activity in head and neck cancer patients

OBJECTIVE

To determine acid-producing capacity and anti-microbial activity of Lactobacillus species collected pretreatment and post treatment in head and neck cancer patients.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Lactobacillus isolates from 21 patients pretreatment and post treatment were identified using molecular methods. The patients' stimulated salivary secretion was determined pretreatment, and 6 and 12 months post treatment and caries lesions/new filled surfaces registered at 24 months post treatment. The acid-producing capacity of the Lactobacillus isolate was analyzed using a colorimetric fermentation test in microtiter plates. The anti-microbial activity of the isolates against Streptococcus mutans associated with caries, and against the mucosal pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans, and Enterococcus faecalis was analyzed by determining inhibitory zones on agar plates.

RESULTS

The most frequent species were L. paracasei (n = 21), L. casei/rhamnosus (n = 17) and L. fermentum (n = 10). Sixty-seven percent of the patients harbored L. paracasei either at 6 or 12 months post radiotherapy. The corresponding figures for L. casei/rhamnosus and L. fermentum were 62% and 33%. L. paracasei strains showed the best acid-producing capacity and L. fermentum strains the lowest. Strong acid-producing capacity was most common among isolates collected at 6 months post treatment. Seventy-two percent of the strains showed an anti-microbial activity against S. mutans, one strain against S. aureus and none against C. albicans or E. faecalis.

CONCLUSION

The most frequent species isolated from head and neck cancer patients both pretreatment and post treatment were L. paracasei, L. casei/rhamnosus, and L. fermentum. L. paracasei showed the best acid-producing capacity and the highest proportion with anti-microbial activity against S. mutans.

Probiotic properties of yeasts isolated from Brazilian fermented table olives

AIMS

To investigate the probiotic potential of yeasts isolated from naturally fermented Brazilian table olives.

METHODS AND RESULTS

Eighteen yeast strains were tested in terms of: safety; survival of gastrointestinal and digestion conditions; antimicrobial activity; cellular hydrophobicity; autoaggregation ability and adhesion to epithelial cells; coaggregation and inhibition of pathogenic bacteria adhesion. Six yeasts showed favourable results for all probiotic attributes: Saccharomyces cerevisiae CCMA 1746, Pichia guilliermondii CCMA 1753, Candida orthopsilosis CCMA 1748, Candida tropicalis CCMA 1751, Meyerozyma caribbica CCMA 1758 and Debaryomyces hansenii CCMA 1761. These yeasts demonstrated resistance to 37°C, pH 2·0 and bile salts, and survived in vitro digestion (≥10⁶  CFU per ml). Furthermore, the yeasts exhibited a hydrophobic cell surface (42·5-92·2%), autoaggregation capacity (41·0-91·0%) and adhesion to Caco-2 (62·0-82·8%) and HT-29 (57·6-87·3%) epithelial cell lines. Also, the strains showed antimicrobial activity against Salmonella Enteritidis as well as the ability to coaggregate and reduce the adhesion of this pathogen to intestinal cells.

CONCLUSIONS

Autochthonous yeasts from naturally fermented Brazilian table olives have probiotic properties, with potential for development of new probiotic food products.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY

These data are important and contribute to the knowledge of new potential probiotic yeasts capable of surviving gastrointestinal tract conditions and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria.

Casein phosphopeptide combined with fluoride enhances the inhibitory effect on initial adhesion of Streptococcus mutans to the saliva-coated hydroxyapatite disc

Background

Recent preventive strategies for dental caries focus on targeting the mechanisms underlying biofilm formation, including the inhibition of bacterial adhesion. A promising approach to prevent bacterial adhesion is to modify the composition of acquired salivary pellicle. This in vitro study investigated the effect and possible underlying mechanism of pellicle modification by casein phosphopeptide (CPP) on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) initial adhesion, and the impact of fluoride on the efficacy of CPP.

Methods

The salivary pellicle-coated hydroxyapatite (s-HA) discs were treated with phosphate buffered saline (negative control), heat-inactivated 2.5% CPP (heat-inactivated CPP), 2.5% CPP (CPP) or 2.5% CPP supplemented with 900 ppm fluoride (CPP + F). After cultivation of S. mutans for 30 min and 2 h, the adherent bacteria were visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and quantitatively evaluated using the plate count method. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to evaluate the proportions of total and dead S. mutans. The concentrations of total, free, and bound calcium and fluoride in the CPP and fluoride-doped CPP solutions were determined. The water contact angle and zeta potential of s-HA with and without modification were measured. The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by a Turkey post hoc multiple comparison test.

Results

Compared to the negative control group, the amount of adherent S. mutans significantly reduced in the CPP and CPP + F groups, and was lowest in the CPP + F group. CLSM analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the proportion of dead S. mutans between the four groups. Water contact angle and zeta potential of s-HA surface significantly decreased in the CPP and CPP + F groups as compared to the negative control group, and both were lowest in the CPP + F group.

Conclusions

Pellicle modification by CPP inhibited S. mutans initial adhesion to s-HA, possibly by reducing hydrophobicity and negative charge of the s-HA surface, and incorporating fluoride into CPP further enhanced the anti-adhesion effect.

Adhesion, anti-adhesion and aggregation properties relating to surface charges of selected Lactobacillus strains: study in Caco-2 and H357 cells

This study aimed to assess adhesion and anti-adhesion, aggregation, and surface properties of four selected oral Lactobacillus strains, L. fermentum SD7, L. paracasei SD1, L. rhamnosus SD4, and L. rhamnosus SD11, together with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. Human cells, enterocytes Caco-2 and oral keratinocyte H357 were used, and various enteric and oral pathogens were included. Results showed that all Lactobacillus tested gave high adhesion and internalization in both Caco-2 and H357 cells similar to L. rhamnosus GG, and it suggests that such properties are strain dependent and specific to host cells. Anti-adhesion was different; it depended on the internalization ability of individual Lactobacillus and pathogenic strains to Caco-2 and H357. Coaggregation ability depended on autoaggregation of both the Lactobacillus and pathogenic strains. A positive correlation between surface charges and aggregation, and internalization and anti-adhesion of all Lactobacillus was found. In conclusion, results suggests that the selected Lactobacillus might be potential probiotics for usage in both the oral cavity and intestinal tract due to their abilities of aggregation, adherence and anti-internalization to both Caco-2 and H357 cells.

Characterization of Diversity and Probiotic Efficiency of the Autochthonous Lactic Acid Bacteria in the Fermentation of Selected Raw Fruit and Vegetable Juices

The diversity of indigenous lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermented broccoli, cherry, ginger, white radish, and white-fleshed pitaya juices was analyzed using culture-independent and -dependent approaches. The major properties of selected probiotic strains, including dynamic variations in pH, viable cell counts, antibiotic resistance, bacterial adhesion to hydrophobic compounds, and survivability during simulated gastrointestinal transit, were investigated using broccoli as the fermentation substrate. In broccoli and ginger juices, the genus Lactobacillus occupied the dominant position (abundances of 79.0 and 30.3%, respectively); in cherry and radish juices, Weissella occupied the dominant position (abundances of 78.3 and 83.2%, respectively); and in pitaya juice, Streptococcus and Lactococcus occupied the dominant positions (52.2 and 37.0%, respectively). Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Weissella cibaria/soli/confusa, Enterococcus gallinarum/durans/hirae, Pediococcus pentosaceus, Bacillus coagulans, and Lactococcus garvieae/lactis subspecies were identified by partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing. In general, the selected autochthonous LAB isolates displayed no significant differences in comparison with commercial strains with regard to growth rates or acidification in fermented broccoli juice. Among all the isolates, L. mesenteroides B4-25 exhibited the highest antibiotic resistance profile (equal to that of L. plantarum CICC20265), and suitable adhesion properties (adhesion of 13.4 ± 5.2% ∼ 36.4 ± 3.2% and 21.6 ± 1.4% ∼ 69.6 ± 2.3% to ethyl acetate and xylene, respectively). Furthermore, P. pentosaceus Ca-4 and L. mesenteroides B-25 featured the highest survival rates (22.4 ± 2.6 and 21.2 ± 1.4%, respectively), after simulated gastrointestinal transit. These results indicated a high level of diversity among the autochthonous bacterial community in fermented fruit and vegetable juices, and demonstrated the potential of these candidate probiotics for applications in fermentation.

Insight into Oral Biofilm: Primary, Secondary and Residual Caries and Phyto-Challenged Solutions

INTRODUCTION

Dental caries is known to be one of the most widespread, chronic infections affecting all ages and populations worldwide. The plethora of oral microbial population paves way for various endogenous infections and plays a crucial role in polymicrobial interactions contributing to biofilm-mediated diseases like caries and periodontal diseases.

METHODS

Extensive literature survey was conducted using the scientific databases like PubMed, Google scholar, Science Direct, etc. using the key words like dental caries, orodental infections, dental microbes, dental biofilm, secondary caries, phytotherapy, etc. The literature was analyzed thoroughly and critical review was performed.

RESULTS

The risk of development of secondary caries and residual caries further results in treatment failure. Drug resistance developed by oral microbes and further side effects pose serious hurdles in the current therapeutic strategies. The hyperactivities of various MMPs and the resulting massive ECM degradation are the challenging part in the design of effective therapeutic approaches. Anticariogenic phytotherapy is well appreciated owing to lesser side effects and versatility of their action. But appreciable outcomes regarding the phytochemical bioavailability and bioretention are still challenging. Site-specific delivery of phytoagents at the infected site may enhance the efficiency of these drugs. Accordingly emerging phytodentistry can be promising for the management of secondary and residual caries.

CONCLUSION

This article presents major cariogens and their mechanisms in initiating and aggravating dental caries. Effectiveness of phytotherapy and different mode of action of phytochemicals against cariogens are outlined. The article also raises major concerns and possibilities of phytochemical based therapeutics to be applied in the clinical arena of caries management.

Survival of Microencapsulated Probiotic Bacteria after Processing and during Storage: A Review

The use of live probiotic bacteria as food supplement has become popular. Capability of probiotic bacteria to be kept at room temperature becomes necessary for customer's convenience and manufacturer's cost reduction. Hence, production of dried form of probiotic bacteria is important. Two common drying methods commonly used for microencapsulation are freeze drying and spray drying. In spite of their benefits, both methods have adverse effects on cell membrane integrity and protein structures resulting in decrease in bacterial viability. Microencapsulation of probiotic bacteria has been a promising technology to ensure bacterial stability during the drying process and to preserve their viability during storage without significantly losing their functional properties such acid tolerance, bile tolerance, surface hydrophobicity, and enzyme activities. Storage at room temperatures instead of freezing or low temperature storage is preferable for minimizing costs of handling, transportation, and storage. Concepts of water activity and glass transition become important in terms of determination of bacterial survival during the storage. The effectiveness of microencapsulation is also affected by microcapsule materials. Carbohydrate- and protein-based microencapsulants and their combination are discussed in terms of their protecting effect on probiotic bacteria during dehydration, during exposure to harsh gastrointestinal transit and small intestine transit and during storage.

Effective in situ repair and bacteriostatic material of tooth enamel based on salivary acquired pellicle inspired oligomeric procyanidins

Remineralization and reduction of cariogenic bacteria at the tooth surface are effective ways to treat dental caries.

Effects of Streptococcus sanguinis Bacteriocin on Cell Surface Hydrophobicity, Membrane Permeability, and Ultrastructure of Candida Thallus

Candida albicans (C.a) and Candida tropicalis (C.t) were treated with Streptococcus sanguinis bacteriocin (S.s bacteriocin), respectively; the bacteriostatic dynamics of S.s bacteriocin, their effects on cell surface hydrophobicity, leakage of inorganic phosphorus and macromolecular substance, cytosolic calcium concentration, and ultrastructure changes of Candida thallus were detected and analyzed. The results showed that inhibitory effect of S.s bacteriocin on C.a and C.t reached peak level at 24 h, the cell-surface hydrophobicity decreased significantly (P < 0.05) after S.s bacteriocin treatment, and there was leakage of cytoplasmic inorganic phosphorus and macromolecular substance from C.a and C.t; cytosolic calcium concentration decreased greatly. After 24 h treatment by S.s bacteriocin, depressive deformity and defect could be found in the cell surface of C.a and C.t; the thallus displayed irregular forms: C.a was shrunken, there was unclear margins abutting upon cell wall and cell membrane, nucleus disappeared, and cytoplasm was inhomogeneous; likewise, C.t was first plasmolysis, and then the cytoplasm was shrunk, the ultrastructure of cell wall and cell membrane was continuously damaged, and the nucleus was karyolysis. It was illustrated that S.s bacteriocin had similar antifungal effect on C.a and C.t; their cell surface hydrophobicity, membrane permeability, and ultrastructure were changed significantly on exposure to S.s bacteriocin.

Probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 exhibit strong antifungal effects against vulvovaginal candidiasis-causing Candida glabrata isolates

Aims

This study investigates the antagonistic effects of the probiotic strains Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 against vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC)-causing Candida glabrata.

Methods and Results

Growth inhibitory activities of Lact. rhamnosus GR-1 and Lact. reuteri RC-14 strains against C. glabrata were demonstrated using a spot overlay assay and a plate-based microtitre assay. In addition, these probiotic lactobacilli strains also exhibited potent candidacidal activity against C. glabrata, as demonstrated by a LIVE/DEAD yeast viability assay performed using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The metabolic activities of all C. glabrata strains were completely shut down in response to the challenges by the probiotic lactobacilli strains. In addition, both probiotic lactobacilli strains exhibited strong autoaggregation and coaggregation phenotypes in the presence of C. glabrata, which indicate that these lactobacilli strains may exert their probiotic effects through the formation of aggregates and, thus the consequent prevention of colonization by C. glabrata.

Conclusions

Probiotic Lact. rhamnosus GR-1 and Lact. reuteri RC-14 strains exhibited potent antagonistic activities against all of the tested C. glabrata strains. These lactobacilli exhibited antifungal effects, including those attributed to their aggregation abilities, and their presence caused the cessation of growth and eventual cell death of C. glabrata.

Significance and Impact of the Study

This is the first study to report on the antagonistic effects of these probiotic lactobacilli strains against the non-Candida albicans Candida (NCAC) species C. glabrata.

Inhibitory effect of Lactobacillus salivarius on Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation

Dental caries arises from an imbalance of metabolic activities in dental biofilms developed primarily by Streptococcus mutans. This study was conducted to isolate potential oral probiotics with antagonistic activities against S. mutans biofilm formation from Lactobacillus salivarius, frequently found in human saliva. We analysed 64 L. salivarius strains and found that two, K35 and K43, significantly inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation with inhibitory activities more pronounced than those of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), a prototypical probiotic that shows anti-caries activity. Scanning electron microscopy showed that co-culture of S. mutans with K35 or K43 resulted in significantly reduced amounts of attached bacteria and network-like structures, typically comprising exopolysaccharides. Spot assay for S. mutans indicated that K35 and K43 strains possessed a stronger bactericidal activity against S. mutans than LGG. Moreover, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that the expression of genes encoding glucosyltransferases, gtfB, gtfC, and gtfD was reduced when S. mutans were co-cultured with K35 or K43. However, LGG activated the expression of gtfB and gtfC, but did not influence the expression of gtfD in the co-culture. A transwell-based biofilm assay indicated that these lactobacilli inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation in a contact-independent manner. In conclusion, we identified two L. salivarius strains with inhibitory activities on the growth and expression of S. mutans virulence genes to reduce its biofilm formation. This is not a general characteristic of the species, so presents a potential strategy for in vivo alteration of plaque biofilm and caries.

Effects of Lactobacillus salivarius-containing tablets on caries risk factors: a randomized open-label clinical trial

Background

To evaluate the effects of the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus salivarius on caries risk factors.

Methods

The study was performed in 64 healthy volunteers to evaluate the effects of L. salivarius-containing tablets on caries risk factors. The participants were divided randomly into four groups, and took tablets containing L. salivarius WB21, L. salivarius TI 2711, Ovalgen® DC (antibody against glucosyltransferase from Streptococcus mutans), or xylitol. Levels of mutans streptococci and lactobacilli, amount of salivary flow, salivary pH, and salivary buffering capacity were assessed before and after taking the tablets. Subsequently, a short-term administration trial using L. salivarius WB21-containing tablets was performed in eight healthy volunteers. The participants took L. salivarius WB21-containing tablets (2.0 × 10⁹ colony forming units/day) for 2 weeks, and the numbers of mutans streptococci in saliva were counted.

Results

The levels of mutans streptococci seemed to decrease in the L. salivarius WB21, TI 2711, and Ovalgen® DC groups compared to the xylitol group, with no significant differences between the groups. Lactobacilli levels significantly increased in the L. salivarius WB21 and TI 2711 groups compared to the other groups. Concerning salivary flow and salivary pH, no significant differences were observed between the groups. The salivary buffering capacity significantly increased in the L. salivarius TI 2711 group (P = 0.003) and Ovalgen® DC group (P = 0.002) compared to the xylitol group. The short-term administration trial showed that the L. salivarius WB21-containing tablets significantly decreased the number of mutans streptococci (P = 0.039).

Conclusion

L. salivarius-containing tablets were suggested to increase resistance to caries risk factors.

Identification of Lactobacillus from the saliva of adult patients with caries using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has been presented as a superior method for the detection of microorganisms in body fluid samples (e.g., blood, saliva, pus, etc.) However, the performance of MALDI-TOF MS in routine identification of caries-related Lactobacillus isolates from saliva of adult patients with caries has not been determined. In the present study, we introduced a new MALDI-TOF MS system for identification of lactobacilli. Saliva samples were collected from 120 subjects with caries. Bacteria were isolated and cultured, and each isolate was identified by both 16S rRNA sequencing and MALDI-TOF MS. The identification results obtained by MALDI-TOF MS were concordant at the genus level with those of conventional 16S rRNA-based sequencing for 88.6% of lactobacilli (62/70) and 95.5% of non-lactobacilli (21/22). Up to 96 results could be obtained in parallel on a single MALDI target, suggesting that this is a reliable high-throughput approach for routine identification of lactobacilli. However, additional reference strains are necessary to increase the sensitivity and specificity of species-level identification.

Screening of Lactobacillus spp. for the prevention of Pseudomonas aeruginosa pulmonary infections

BACKGROUND

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that significantly increases morbidity and mortality in nosocomial infections and cystic fibrosis patients. Its pathogenicity especially relies on the production of virulence factors or resistances to many antibiotics. Since multiplication of antibiotic resistance can lead to therapeutic impasses, it becomes necessary to develop new tools for fighting P. aeruginosa infections. The use of probiotics is one of the ways currently being explored. Probiotics are microorganisms that exert a positive effect on the host's health and some of them are known to possess antibacterial activities. Since most of their effects have been shown in the digestive tract, experimental data compatible with the respiratory environment are strongly needed. The main goal of this study was then to test the capacity of lactobacilli to inhibit major virulence factors (elastolytic activity and biofilm formation) associated with P. aeruginosa pathogenicity.

RESULTS

Sixty-seven lactobacilli were isolated from the oral cavities of healthy volunteers. These isolates together with 20 lactobacilli isolated from raw milks, were tested for their capacity to decrease biofilm formation and activity of the elastase produced by P. aeruginosa PAO1. Ten isolates, particularly efficient, were accurately identified using a polyphasic approach (API 50 CHL, mass-spectrometry and 16S/rpoA/pheS genes sequencing) and typed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The 8 remaining strains belonging to the L. fermentum (6), L. zeae (1) and L. paracasei (1) species were sensitive to all antibiotics tested with the exception of the intrinsic resistance to vancomycin. The strains were all able to grow in artificial saliva.

CONCLUSION

Eight strains belonging to L. fermentum, L. zeae and L. paracasei species harbouring anti-elastase and anti-biofilm properties are potential probiotics for fighting P. aeruginosa pulmonary infections. However, further studies are needed in order to test their innocuity and their capacity to behave such as an oropharyngeal barrier against Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonisation in vivo.

Who will win the race in childrens' oral cavities? Streptococcus mutans or beneficial lactic acid bacteria?

Adhesion to oral soft and hard tissue is crucial for bacterial colonisation in the mouth. The aim of this work was to select strains of oral lactic acid bacteria that could be used as probiotics for oral health. To this end, the adhesive properties of some lactic acid bacteria were investigated. Seventeen lactic acid bacteria including two Streptococcus mutans strains were isolated from the oral cavity of healthy children, while other strains were isolated from fermented meat products. The bacterial strains were applied to teeth surfaces covered with saliva or without saliva. A significant diversity in adhesion capacity to teeth surfaces among the lactic acid bacteria was observed. Lactic acid bacteria isolated from the oral cavity adhered the best to teeth surfaces covered with saliva, whereas lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented meat samples adhered the best to tooth surface without saliva. All strains of lactic acid bacteria were able to reduce the number of S. mutans cells, in particular on saliva-coated tooth surface. Therefore, they might have potential as probiotics for the oral cavity.

Analysis of cariogenic bacteria in saliva of cancer patients

This study examined salivary flow and salivary pH and the prevalence and levels of cariogenic bacteria in the saliva of oncological patients and healthy controls. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to assess the levels of microbes including Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sobrinus, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Lactobacillus acidophilus in the saliva of 41 patients with a solid tumor (SO), 30 patients with a hematologic malignancy (HE), and 40 healthy controls. Salivary flow and pH were lower in oncological patients than in controls. The frequencies of all four cariogenic bacteria were highest in the SO group. S. mutans and L. salivarius were the most commonly detected in all three study groups. Mean numbers of S. sobrinus and L. salivarius in the SO group were significantly higher than in controls (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between patients and controls with respect to mean numbers of S. mutans and L. acidophilus in saliva. However, the proportions of S. mutans, S. sobrinus, and L. salivarius versus total bacteria in the SO group were significantly higher than in controls. Within patients, both mean numbers and the proportions of S. mutans and S. sobrinus were significantly different (p<0.05). In summary, significant differences were found in salivary pH values and the levels of S. mutans, S. sobrinus, and L. salivarius between SO patients and healthy controls.

Effects of probiotic Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 on halitosis and oral health: an open-label pilot trial

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether oral administration of lactobacilli alters the degree of halitosis and clinical conditions associated with halitosis.

STUDY DESIGN

Twenty patients with genuine halitosis were given 2.0 x 10(9)Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 and xylitol in tablet form daily. Oral malodor and clinical parameters were evaluated at the same time of day for each patient after 2 and 4 weeks.

RESULTS

All 20 patients were positive for L. salivarius DNA in their saliva at 2 weeks, although 12 patients were negative for this organism at baseline. Oral malodor parameters significantly decreased at 2 weeks in the subjects with physiologic halitosis. The scores of an organoleptic test and bleeding on probing significantly decreased at 4 weeks in the subjects with oral pathologic halitosis.

CONCLUSIONS

Oral administration of probiotic lactobacilli primarily improved physiologic halitosis and also showed beneficial effects on bleeding on probing from the periodontal pocket.

Lactobacillus species and genotypes associated with dental caries in Thai preschool children

Lactobacilli have been associated with the presence and progression of dental caries. Nevertheless, the relation between certain species or genotypes of Lactobacillus and caries is unclear and there are no data available for the Thai population. This study aimed to examine the distribution of species and genotypes of oral Lactobacillus among children with rather high caries prevalence, and to investigate whether certain species or genotypes were more related to caries activity than others. One hundred and sixty-five children were examined for caries status. Saliva samples were collected and the numbers of lactobacilli were counted. A total of 357 Lactobacillus isolates from 59 children were identified to species level by 16S ribosomal RNA genes polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -restriction fragment length polymorphism and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing. Furthermore, 304 isolates from 56 children were genotyped using arbitrarily primed PCR. Significant correlation was found between levels of lactobacilli and dental caries (P < 0.001). Among the 10 identified species of Lactobacillus, L. salivarius was more prevalent in children with moderate to high caries prevalence compared with children with low caries prevalence, while L. fermentum was the most predominant species in all study groups. Moreover, a genetic heterogeneity of Lactobacillus species was found among the children and those with high caries prevalence tended to be colonized with more than one clonal type. In summary, L. salivarius may be a putative caries pathogen among preschool Thai children.

Oral Lactobacillus species in type 2 diabetic patients living in southern Thailand

Although lactobacilli are part of normal oral, gastrointestinal and genitourinary flora, they are an uncommon cause of infections in human. Lactobacillus-associated infections have generally occurred in patients with serious underlying conditions e.g. diabetes and cancer that might favour certain microorganisms. The aim of this study was to characterize species and genotypes of lactobacilli isolated from diabetic patients and non-diabetic subjects. One hundred and five type 2 diabetic patients and 103 non-diabetic subjects were recruited in this study. A total of 170 isolates of Lactobacillus were identified using 16S rRNA gene PCR-RFLP and genotyping were performed using AP-PCR by ERIC primers. It was found that type 2 diabetic patients had a significantly higher prevalence (p = 0.008) and level of lactobacilli than non-diabetic controls (p = 0.030). The most frequently isolated Lactobacillus spp. were L. casei/paracasei and L. fermentum in both the diabetic and non-diabetic groups. Strains of L. casei/paracasei and L. fermentum from between and within individuals were genotyped, and the genotyping of Lactobacillus strains showed diversity between individuals. One up to three genotypes of these two species could be found in the same subject. Interestingly, fewer genotypes were found in the diabetic patients than in the non-diabetic subjects.

Advances in the design of probiotic products for the prevention of major diseases in dairy cattle

Probiotics are frequently used for multiple objectives and the majority of applications are performed both in human beings and in different animals. The specificity of species showed by the members of the indigenous microbiotia led us to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from their natural bovine ecosystems and to select those with probiotic potentiality. The beneficial probiotic LAB were isolated from the vaginal tract and mammary gland of adult heifers, faeces and oral cavity of newborn calves. Bacterial strains and their numbers varied in each tract under study. Their surface properties, evaluated using the MATH test, revealed that the higher number of low hydrophobic strains were isolated from vaginal tract, mammary gland or faeces. The capability of autoaggregation also differed with higher degree in those isolated from vagina, whereas those that originated in the mammary gland or faeces showed low autoaggregation characteristics. The production of antagonistic substances showed that the production of hydrogen peroxide was higher in the strains isolated from the vaginal tract, while those able to produce organic acid were isolated from all the environments. A few strains were able to produce bacteriocins and were isolated only from the mammary gland and faeces, but not from the vaginal tract. Further studies are being performed to complete the functional characterization of the strains in order to evaluate their survival in the environmental conditions of each tract. Finally, the selected strains could be combined for the design of probiotic products to be used both in adult cows and in neonates, based on the host-specificity, due to their autochthonous origin and their potential use in the tract where they were isolated.

Improvement of periodontal condition by probiotics with Lactobacillus salivarius WB21: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

AIM

This randomized clinical study was designed to evaluate the effect of probiotic intervention using lactobacilli on the periodontal condition of volunteers without severe periodontitis.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Freeze-dried Lactobacillus salivarius WB21 (WB21)-containing tablets or a placebo were given to volunteers in a double-blind randomized study. A total of 66 volunteers were finally enrolled and randomly assigned to receive tablets containing WB21 (6.7 x 10(8) CFU) with xylitol or xylitol alone (placebo) three times a day for 8 weeks. Periodontal clinical parameters and whole saliva samples were obtained at baseline (BL), 4 weeks, and the end of the interventional period (8 weeks). Salivary lactoferrin (Lf) levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Lactobacilli in saliva and plaque samples was detected by semi-quantitative RT-PCR using 16S rRNA primers.

RESULTS

Periodontal clinical parameters were improved in both groups after an 8-week intervention. Current smokers in the test group showed a significantly greater improvement of plaque index and probing pocket depth from BL when compared with those in the placebo group. Salivary Lf level was also significantly decreased in the test group smokers.

CONCLUSION

Our results indicate that probiotics could be useful in the improvement/maintenance of oral health in subjects at a high risk of periodontal disease.

Ecology of lactobacilli in the oral cavity: a review of literature

Lactobacilli appear in the oral cavity during the first years of a child's life. Their presence depends on numerous factors such as the presence of ecological niches e.g. natural anfractuosities of the teeth.A strong correlation has been established between the saliva Lactobacillus count and dental caries, the higher the DMF index, the higher the number of children harbouring a high Lactobacillus count.Among children, the presence of lactobacilli in coronal caries is incontestable. Among adults, lactobacilli are found in root caries. Since 1999, taxonomical revisions make it difficult to interpret the results obtained in the numerous previous studies carried out on the identification of oral lactobacilli, but whatever the sampling method or the identification technique, the carious site or the age of sampled subjects, most species belong to the Lactobacillus casei group.This is important because if a specific correlation can be found between few species of lactobacilli and caries a better understanding of their properties could allow the development of new tools for prevention.

Probiotics: contributions to oral health

Probiotics have been extensively studied for their health-promoting effects. The main field of research has been in the gastrointestinal tract. However, in the past few years probiotics have also been investigated in the oral health perspective, which is the topic of the present review. We discuss the mechanisms of bacterial adhesion, potential of probiotics in oral cavity colonization, interspecies interactions, and possible effects on immunomodulation, and means of probiotic administration. We suggest that probiotic treatment of diseases other than dental caries and periodontal disease should also be systematically investigated. In general, hardly any randomized controlled trials have been conducted in this area and the studies on probiotics vs oral health are still in their cradle. Hence, much more investigations are called for before any evidence-based conclusions can be drawn: if or not probiotic therapy can be recommended for oral health purposes.

Molecular and biochemical characterizations of human oral lactobacilli as putative probiotic candidates

INTRODUCTION

The objective of this study was to characterize the lactobacilli from the human oral cavity as a potential source of probiotic strains.

METHODS

Samples were collected from four different locations within the oral cavity: surface of healthy tooth, oral mucous membrane, surface of tooth decay and deep tooth decay. On the basis of morphological and biochemical properties eight categories were formed and 26 isolates were selected for further characterization. The isolates were determined as Lactobacillus sp. using primers specific for 16S rDNA. Sequencing of 16S rDNA genes and repetitive sequence-based polymerase chain reactions were used for determination to species and subspecies levels.

RESULTS

Predominant species were Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus salivarius and Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei, while Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus cellobiosus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis and Lactobacillus gasseri were also present. The isolates Lactobacillus salivarius BGHO1, Lactobacillus fermentum BGHO36 and BGHO64, Lactobacillus gasseri BGHO89 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis BGHO99 exhibited antagonistic action on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Micrococcus flavus, Salmonella enteritidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus mutans, but not on growth of Candida albicans. Moreover, the isolates L. salivarius BGHO1 and L. gasseri BGHO89 were tolerant to low pH and high concentration of bile salts.

CONCLUSION

Taken together, these findings imply that L. salivarius BGHO1 and L. gasseri BGHO89 might be subjects for additional investigation as potential probiotic strains.
