Children's and Adolescents' Happiness and Family Functioning: A Systematic Literature Review

BACKGROUND

the present research represents the first systematic review of the literature on the relation between happiness (i.e., subjective well-being, life satisfaction, positive affect) and family functioning in families with children aged 6-18 years.

METHOD

relevant articles were systematically searched in three scientific databases (i.e., PsycInfo, Pubmed, and Web of Science) in June 2022. The databases were searched for original articles published after 1968 with the keywords "happiness" and "family functioning."

RESULTS

of the 2683 records recovered, 124 original articles met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review. The articles were divided according to four emergent themes: (1) family dimensions and happiness; (2) global family functioning (i.e., family functioning, and family relationships), environmental variables, and happiness; (3) parental differences; (4) longitudinal studies.

CONCLUSIONS

the results of the review provide evidence for a positive relation between happiness and family functioning, across different cultures and age groups: Family dimensions (e.g., cohesion, communication) were found to strongly predict children's and adolescents' happiness. Future studies should investigate the differences between fathers and mothers using multi-informant and mixed methods procedures and a longitudinal research approach. The implications of the findings for children's positive development are discussed.

The role of mental health, personality disorders and childhood adversities in relation to life satisfaction in a sample of general population

BACKGROUND

Mental health disorders are one of the leading causes of the disease burden globally.

AIM

The aim of this population-based study was to investigate the relationship between life satisfaction and mental health by taking into account its less studied areas, such as personality disorders and childhood adversities.

METHODS

The sample of this cross-sectional study was derived from a population-based Kuopio Depression Study performed in Eastern Finland. Health questionnaires were mailed in 1998, 1999, 2001 and 2005 including questions on several clinical factors. Questions on childhood home were asked in 1999. The inclusion criteria for the final study sample in 2005 were based on previously repeatedly (1998, 1999, 2001) reported life satisfaction, depression or alexithymic features (with/without). Psychiatric diagnoses of major depressive disorder and personality disorder were confirmed by structured clinical interview I and II for DSM-IV in 2005. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the studied relationships.

RESULTS

In general, the broad spectrum of poor mental health indicators was associated with concurrent life dissatisfaction. After multiple adjustments, major depressive disorder (MDD), hopelessness and mental distress remained independent correlates of life dissatisfaction, while personality disorder or self-reported childhood adversities lost their significance when these other factors were included in the model.

CONCLUSIONS

Mental health is closely interwoven with life satisfaction. Even if personality disorder and childhood adversities were significant correlates of life dissatisfaction, adverse concurrent mental symptoms and features and MDD were its strongest correlates.

The burden of alcohol drinking on co-workers in the Australian workplace

OBJECTIVE

To estimate the cost of the extra time worked by Australian workers due to their co-workers' alcohol drinking.

DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

A secondary analysis of data obtained from 1677 Australian workers aged 18 years or older collected as part of a broader national study into the third-party harms of alcohol. Computer-assisted telephone interviews were conducted between October and mid December 2008.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Self-reported measures of the time spent covering for other people at work because of their alcohol drinking; measures of other impacts from co-workers' alcohol drinking; and self-reported income.

RESULTS

Around a third of Australian workers have experienced negative effects from their co-workers' alcohol drinking, with 3.5% of workers reporting having to work extra hours to cover for others. The total annual cost to the Australian economy of this extra work is estimated to be $453 million.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study suggest that Australian workers are significantly affected by other people's alcohol drinking, at considerable cost. This finding highlights the significant cost to the workplace of alcohol consumption, extending previous work which has focused only on alcohol-related absenteeism.

Effects of childhood exposure to familial alcoholism and family violence on adolescent substance use, conduct problems, and self-esteem

Exposure to familial alcoholism has been associated with many behavioral and emotional difficulties among offspring. However, few studies have examined environmental risks that often coexist with familial alcoholism, and which may influence the development of offspring psychosocial problems. This study examined potential additive and interactive effects of childhood exposure to family violence and childhood exposure to familial alcoholism on adolescent functioning. Three domains of adolescent functioning were examined in a high-risk community sample of 109 families: lifetime levels of substance use, conduct disorder behaviors, and self-esteem. Results indicated that both childhood exposure to familial alcoholism and childhood exposure to family violence were associated with psychosocial functioning of offspring during adolescence, although the relations differ according to domain of functioning and gender.

The family and alcohol: effects of excessive drinking and conceptualizations of spouses over recent decades

There is much debate in the addiction literature about the extent to which excessive drinking affects nondrinking family members. The issue is considered in this review by examining and evaluating research relating to the effects of drinking on children, family systems, and partners of drinkers. The latter group have, historically, been blamed and apologized for their partner's drinking, although more recent theories have adopted a stress and coping paradigm, thus normalizing individuals and their behaviors. Conceptualizations of spouses over the last five decades are described and evaluated in the second part of the review. Finally, the review considers the impact of the recent stress and coping paradigm on clinical interventions for excessive drinkers and their families, and suggestions are made for future research.

Influence of negative childhood experiences on psychological functioning, social support, and parenting for mothers recovering from addiction

OBJECTIVE

This study was conducted with mothers recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and had three aims: first, to understand the range of negative childhood events these mothers experienced; second, to understand their current level of distress and their parenting experiences; and third, to examine the relationships between negative childhood events and parenting experiences.

METHOD

Forty-six mothers participated in a cross-sectional exploratory study and completed a range of self-report measures, including the Child Abuse & Trauma Scale, Social Support Inventory, CES-D, Parenting Stress Index, and the Parenting Scale.

RESULTS

When compared to norming samples these mothers reported significantly higher levels of aversive childhood experiences, psychological distress, parenting stress and use of problematic parenting behaviors along with lower levels of social support. Higher levels of neglect and growing up in a negative home environment were significantly correlated with lower levels of social support from the family, higher levels of distress and parenting stress, and greater use of problematic parenting behaviors.

CONCLUSION

For this sample there is a greater incidence of aversive childhood experiences and greater problems with maternal functioning. Mothers recovering from addiction have an additional need for clinical attention towards issues of recovery from childhood abuse and responding to parenting difficulties with their own children.
