Abstract
PURPOSE To explore potential profile characteristics associated with neuro-oncology nurses' missed nursing care (MNC) and analyze differences in characteristics of neuro-oncology nurses across these profiles. METHODS A cross-sectional study design using convenience sampling involved 446 neuro-oncology nurses from ten Grade A oncology hospitals across six provinces in China, conducted from April to June 2024. The General Information Questionnaire, the Oncology Missed Nursing Care Self-Rating Scale, the Practice Environment Scale, and the Psychological Capital Scale were employed for data collection. Latent profile analysis was performed to identify MNC profiles, followed by multinomial logistic regression analysis to examine predictors of MNC. RESULTS The incidence of MNC among neuro-oncology nurses was found to be 36.4%. Three latent profiles were identified: "severe missed nursing care profile" (20.6%), "medium-risk missed nursing care profile" (51.3%), and 'low-risk missed nursing care profile' (28.1%). Compared with the "severe missed nursing care profile," neuro-oncology nurses with a technical secondary school or junior college education, who expressed job satisfaction, good self-confidence, and mental resilience were more likely to fall into the "medium-risk missed nursing care profile." Additionally, those aged 18-35 years were more likely to be categorized in the "low-risk missed nursing care profile," and nurses working in a positive nursing work environment were also more likely to belong to the "medium-risk" or "low-risk missed nursing care profiles." CONCLUSION There is notable heterogeneity in the levels of missed nursing care among neuro-oncology nurses. Nursing managers should prioritize addressing middle-risk missed nursing care and enhancing both the working environment and psychological support for neuro-oncology nurses. Tailored interventions based on the distribution of different profiles can improve nursing quality, increase job satisfaction, and enhance patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global variable of missed nursing care and practice environment are widely recognized as two crucial contextual factors that significantly impact the quality of nursing care. This study assessed the current status of missed nursing care and the characteristics of the nursing practice environment in Iran. Additionally, this study aimed to explore the relationship between these two variables. METHODS We conducted an across-sectional study from May 2021 to January 2022 in which we investigated 255 nurses. We utilized the Missed Nursing Care Survey, the Nursing Work Index-Practice Environment Scale, and a demographic questionnaire to gather the necessary information. We used the Shapiro‒Wilk test, Pearson correlation coefficient test, and multiple linear regression test in SPSS version 20 for the data analyses. RESULTS According to the present study, 41% of nurses regularly or often overlooked certain aspects of care, resulting in an average score of 32.34 ± 7.43 for missed nursing care. It is worth noting that attending patient care conferences, providing patient bathing and skin care, and assisting with toileting needs were all significant factors contributing to the score. The overall practice environment was unfavorable, with a mean score of 2.25 ± 0.51. Interestingly, 'nursing foundations for quality of care' was identified as the sole predictor of missed nursing care, with a β value of -0.22 and a p-value of 0.036. CONCLUSIONS This study identified attending patient care interdisciplinary team meetings and delivering basic care promptly as the most prevalent instances of missed nursing care. Unfortunately, the surveyed hospitals exhibited an undesirable practice environment, which correlated with a higher incidence of missed nursing care. These findings highlight the crucial impact of nurses' practice environment on care delivery. Addressing the challenges in the practice environment is essential for reducing instances of missed care, improving patient outcomes, and enhancing overall healthcare quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No previous study has examined the direct effect of occupational fatigue, inter-shift recovery and compassion competence on caring behaviours, including assurance, knowledge-skill, respect and commitment in intensive care nurses. AIM We studied the direct effect of participating nurses' occupational fatigue, inter-shift recovery and compassion competence levels on their caring behaviours and the relationship among these variables. STUDY DESIGN This was a descriptive correlational study. All nurses who were registered members of the Turkish Intensive Care Nurses Association were invited to participate in this online survey. This study was conducted with 315 intensive care nurses using convenience sampling between April and July 2022. The data were collected using the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery Scale, which consists of three subscales: acute fatigue, chronic fatigue and inter-shift recovery; the Compassion Competence Scale, including communication, sensitivity and insight subscales; and the Caring Behaviours Inventory-24. In addition, a structural equation model was established using variables correlating with caring behaviours. Independent variables were occupational fatigue, inter-ship recovery and compassion competence; and the dependent variable was caring behaviours in this hypothesized model. RESULTS Three hundred and fifteen nurses completed the survey (315/1000) with a response rate of 31.5%. The increase in the inter-shift recovery levels of participants was statistically and positively associated with caring behaviours (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.001-0.011, β = .154 [moderate effect size], p < .05). The sub-dimensions of the Compassion Competence Scale, that is, communication (95% CI: 0.110-0.443, β = .251 [moderate effect size]) and sensitivity (95% CI: 0.084-0.427, β = .241 [moderate effect size]), were statistically and positively associated with the caring behaviours of participants (p < .05). In addition, independent variables accounted for 35% (large effect size) of the total change in caring behaviours (R2 = 0.350). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that the high inter-shift recovery and compassion competence levels of intensive care nurses are positively associated with their caring behaviours. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Nursing managers should consider the direct effect of occupational fatigue, inter-shift recovery and the compassion competence levels of intensive care nurses on their caring behaviours to provide high-quality care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is necessary to find ways to mediate the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care in settings where nursing staffing is inadequate. This study aimed to identify the single and multiple sequential mediation effects of organizational support, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurse-nurse collaboration on the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care. METHODS Data were collected from 237 registered Korean nurses working in general wards in October 2022. The measures used were the modified role overload scale, nurse-physician collaboration scale, nurse-nurse collaboration scale, a short version of the Perceived Organizational Support Scale, and the modified Missed Nursing Care Scale. Data were analyzed using PROCESS macro in SPSS. A hypothesis test was performed using Model 81, proposed by Hayes, which includes serial multiple mediators. RESULTS Organizational support, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurse-nurse collaboration showed a mediation effect on missed nursing care. Organizational support, nurse-physician collaboration, and nurse-nurse collaboration showed significant multiple sequential mediation effects on the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care. When the indirect effect sizes of nurse-physician collaboration were compared with those of nurse-nurse collaboration in both single and multiple sequential mediation paths, the indirect effect of nurse-physician collaboration was greater than that of nurse-nurse collaboration on the relationship between role overload and missed nursing care. CONCLUSIONS As an alternative strategy to reduce missed nursing care in situations with insufficient nursing staffing, organizational support should precede nurse-physician and nurse-nurse collaboration. In particular, improving nurse-physician collaboration shows promise in mitigating missed nursing care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Missed nursing care (MNC) negatively impacts the quality of patient care. There may be a relationship between the nursing practice environment (NPE) and MNC; however, this relationship has not been examined in developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. PURPOSE To determine the relationship between the NPE and MNC during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A cross-sectional study of 300 participants was conducted in 4 teaching hospitals in Iran. Data were collected using a demographic and clinical form, the Nursing Professional Practice Environment Questionnaire, and MISSCARE survey and analyzed using structural equation modeling. RESULTS The hypothesized model was well fit, showing that 1 unit improvement of the NPE domains of patient-centered care , effective leadership , and policy transparency decreased MNC by 0.18, 0.12, and 0.05, respectively. CONCLUSION The model confirmed the association between the dimensions of the NPE and MNC. These findings can assist health policymakers and nursing managers in improving the NPE.

Abstract
Communication in healthcare extends beyond patient care, impacting the work environment and job satisfaction. Interprofessional communication is essential for fostering collaboration, but challenges arise from differences in training, roles, and hierarchies. The study aimed to explore psychiatric outpatient clinicians' experiences of interprofessional communication and their perceptions of how the communication intersects the organizational and social work environment of healthcare. Qualitative research involved focus group interviews with clinicians from five psychiatric outpatient units in Central Sweden, representing diverse professions. The authors analyzed semi-structured interview data thematically to uncover clinicians' perspectives on interprofessional communication. An overarching theme, "Adjustment of communication," with subthemes "Synchronized communication" and "Dislocated communication," emerged. Clinicians adapted communication strategies based on situations and needs, with synchronized communication promoting collaboration and dislocated communication hindering it. Communicating with each other was highly valued, as it contributed to a positive work environment. The study underscores the importance of an open, supportive environment that fosters trust, and respect among healthcare clinicians. Consistent with prior research, collaboration gaps underscore the urgent need to improve interprofessional communication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research has established a relationship between favorable nurse work environments and better nurse, patient, and organizational outcomes. However, the instrument most frequently used to measure the nurse work environment, the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI), has not had its items significantly re-evaluated since the 1980s. OBJECTIVE We sought to examine the psychometric properties of an updated PES-NWI and create an instrument suitable for further testing and refinement to measure the present-day nurse work environment. Specifically, we sought to establish construct, structural, discriminative, and concurrent validity. For reliability, we desired to establish interrater reliability and internal consistency reliability. METHODS We administered a modified PES-NWI to a national sample of direct-care hospital nurses (n = 818) in the United States. We then assessed the psychometric properties of the instrument. RESULTS While the modified PES-NWI displayed adequate validity and reliability properties, further testing and refinement of the instrument is necessary. CONCLUSIONS With this updated measure of the nurse work environment, researchers and hospital leaders can identify modifiable opportunities for improvement in contemporary hospital nurse work environments which may enhance nurse and patient outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the relationships of three missed critical nursing care processes on labor and delivery units with reduced nursing time at the bedside and adequacy of unit staffing during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. DESIGN A cross-sectional survey. SETTING Online distribution from January 14 to February 26, 2021. PARTICIPANTS A national convenience sample (N = 836) of registered nurses employed on labor and delivery units. METHODS We conducted descriptive analyses on respondent characteristics and critical missed care items adapted from the Perinatal Missed Care Survey. We conducted robust logistic regression analyses to assess the relationships of three missed critical nursing care processes (surveillance of fetal well-being, excessive uterine activity, and development of new maternal complications) with reduced nursing time at the bedside and adequacy of unit staffing during the COVID-19 pandemic. RESULTS Less nursing time at the bedside was associated with greater odds of missing any of the critical aspects of care, adjusted odds ratio = 1.77, 95% confidence interval [1.12, 2.80]. Adequate staffing greater than or equal to 75% of the time was associated with lower odds of missing any of the critical aspects of care compared to adequate staffing less than or equal to 50% of the time, adjusted odds ratio = 0.54, 95% confidence interval [0.36, 0.79]. CONCLUSION Perinatal outcomes are dependent on the timely recognition of and response to abnormal maternal and fetal conditions during childbirth. In times of unexpected complexity in care and resource constraints, a focus on three critical aspects of perinatal nursing care is needed to maintain patient safety. Strategies that enable bedside presence of nurses, including maintaining adequate unit staffing, may help to mitigate missed care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Missed nursing care can jeopardize the safety of patients. The practice environment contains various elements that may impact nursing staff's capability to provide appropriate care. PURPOSE To examine the association between the practice environment and missed nursing care in Jordanian hospitals. METHODS A cross-sectional design, including the MISSCARE survey and the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, was used for this study. RESULTS Data were gathered from 672 nurses working in 10 hospitals between March and July 2021. Findings revealed significant negative correlations between nurses' participation in hospital affairs ( r = -0.077, P = .046), nursing foundations for quality of care ( r = -0.139, P < .001), and missed nursing care. CONCLUSION Information from this study can help nursing leaders modify practice environment elements that impact missed nursing care occurrences, which will help improve the quality of care provided to patients.

Abstract
Introduction Current research suggests that missed nursing care is widespread in preoperative lung cancer patients in China, and preoperative airway management nursing care for lung cancer patients is not standardized. Missed nursing care for preoperative lung cancer patients, on the other hand, is rarely investigated, particularly from the patient's perspective. This study aimed to develop and validate the MISSCARE Survey for pre-operative patients with lung cancer in China. Methods This study generated the preliminary draft of the MISSCARE Survey - Lung Cancer Patient (MS-LCP) and tested its reliability and stability through three rounds of lung cancer resection (494, 50, and 309 cases, respectively). 20 patients and 6 experts determined the face and content validity. EFA and CFA assessed construct and convergent validity. Internal consistency, including Cronbach's alpha, Spearman-Brown reliability, and re-test reliability, was also examined. Results The scale contained 15 items, including specific care, communicative care, timely care, and basic care. KMO was 0.932 (> 0.6), and Bartlett's Test of Sphericity showed P = 0.000 (<0.05). The attribution factor's item loads ranged from 0.765 to 0.853, accounting for 82.20% of the variation. The scale's Cronbach's alpha, Spearman-Brown, and retest reliability were 0.945, 0.879, and 0.824. CFA showed goodness of fit (RMSEA = 0.021, χ2/df = 1.138, GFI = 0.900, AGFI = 0.945, CFI = 0.996, NFI = 0.967, IFI = 0.996). For each dimension, AVE ranged from 0.555 to 0.717 (>0.50) and CR from 0.861 to 0.904 (>0.70). Conclusion The MS-LCP was reliable and valid in this study, making it appropriate for the Chinese lung cancer patient population. This tool is more objective in its presentation of missed nursing care, assisting nursing staff in optimizing nursing procedures before surgery, increasing the implementation of higher-quality tumor care, and promoting the recovery of lung cancer surgery patients.

Abstract
Uvod: Stiske zaradi zdravstvene nege, ki ostaja zaradi različnih razlogov neizvedena, so pri medicinskih sestrah pogosto spregledane in neprepoznane. Namen integrativnega pregleda literature je pregledati najnovejše raziskave, ki opisujejo, kako se neizvedena zdravstvena nega izraža na duševnem počutju medicinskih sester.Metode: Uporabili smo integrativni pregled literature, izveden v skladu s PRISMA smernicami v podatkovnih bazah PubMed, CINAHL, Wiley, COBISS.SI in Google Učenjak. Potek iskanja in analize literature je prikazan s pomočjo PRISMA diagrama. Zadetke smo razvrstili glede na raven dokazov. Uporabili smo tematsko analizo vsebine.Rezultati: Skupaj je bilo identificiranih 175 in v končno analizo vključenih 11 virov. Identificirano je bilo 96 kod združenih v 4 kategorije: (1) Telesno, duševno in čustveno počutje, (2) Moralno etične dileme, (3) Sprejemanje odločitev pri delu – prilagajanje, (4) Poklicne in osebne vrednote.Diskusija in zaključek: Neizvedena zdravstvena nega je za medicinske sestre pomemben izvor stisk in stresa, saj zaradi neizvajanja vseh potrebnih aktivnosti v zdravstveni negi prihajajo v neskladje s svojimi osebnimi in poklicnimi vrednotami. Naši rezultati dodajajo vsebinski kontekst in boljše razumevanje posledic neizvedene zdravstvene nege pri medicinskih sestrah. Vsakodnevno odločanje, katere aktivnosti bo potrebno izpustiti, vpliva ne samo na slabše počutje, nezadovoljstvo in izgorelost, ampak celo na zapuščanje delovnih mest in poklica.

Abstract
Background:
Caring behavior impacts care quality and improves patients’ satisfaction. Hourly rounding aims at preventing missed care and improving hospital patient satisfaction.
Objectives:
This study aimed to examine the Jordanian nurses’ perception of caring behavior and hourly rounding and assess the correlation between perception of caring behavior and hourly rounding.
Methods:
A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was used to conduct this study. A convenience sample of 1378 nurses completed the online Hourly Rounding Questionnaire (HRQ) and the Caring Dimension Inventory (CDI-25).
Results:
Nurses’ lowest agreement about hourly rounding was on the documentation. In comparison, the highest agreement was making patients safer by preventing falls. The mean of caring behavior was 105.39, indicating a high level of care. This study revealed significant differences in nurses’ perceptions of hourly rounding concerning hospital type, shifts, working units, and gender. Moreover, a strong positive correlation was found between nurses’ perceptions of hourly rounding and their perception of caring.
Implications for Nursing:
Nurses should take the psychosocial aspect of the patients as an essential priority when providing care. The nurse leaders are responsible for supervising, supporting, and evaluating that hourly rounding according to policy and protocols.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrated the importance of hourly rounding and caring behavior and their correlation.

Abstract
Pakistan is a country where the nursing profession still has to get a good working environment as it is directly related to improved patient care. The nursing practice environment is a key factor that contributes to retention. Bearing in mind the importance of the issue the present study is designed to know the current state of the nursing practice environment. The data were collected from the nurses working in the medical wards and critical care units in the Pakistan Institute of Neurosciences, Lahore. Convenience sampling was used to select the respondents and collect the data. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed among the nurses and 110 questionnaires were used for the data analysis in Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Frequency, descriptive statistics, reliability, and validity analyses were performed. As per the results of the study, the questionnaire used in the study was reliable and valid. Additionally, the results of the study established that the nursing practice environment is poor asking for concrete steps to make it better for improved patient care delivery. Nurse leaders can dedicate their efforts to the improvement of the nursing practice environment to improve the nurse job outcomes. Further, they can also arrange the trainings for the professional development of the nurses to ensure the better healthcare services delivery. The perceptions of the good nursing practice environment can be fostered among the nurses by having their active participation in the hospital matters and decision making because they are also the key staff in the hospital environment.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among patient safety competency, systems thinking and missed nursing care. BACKGROUND Patient safety competency and systems thinking are important nurse attributes that promote patient safety. Missed nursing care is known to negatively impact patient safety. However, how nurses' patient safety competency and systems thinking relate to missed nursing care is unknown. METHODS A cross-sectional survey design was used to collect data from nurses practicing in two general hospitals in South Korea. Data were collected between 3 March and 17 April 2020. Questionnaires were distributed to nurses providing direct care in general and specialty units. Patient safety competency, systems thinking and missed nursing care were measured using reliable and valid instruments. A total of 432 complete sets of data were used in final analysis. RESULTS Higher patient safety competency of nurses was associated with lower missed nursing care. Systems thinking partially mediated the relationship between knowledge of patient safety competency and missed nursing care, and attitudes of patient safety competency and missed nursing care. CONCLUSIONS The knowledge, skills and attitudes sub-scales of patient safety competency showed somewhat different effects in the relationship between missed nursing care and systems thinking, suggesting that each attribute may tap into a separate aspect of patient safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The influence of the work environment on missed care and service quality has been well documented. However, available evidence concerning this relationship comes mostly from developed countries. Few studies have been conducted in low- or middle-income countries. We assessed the relationship between the work environment and missed nursing care in highly specialised hospitals in Mexico. METHODS We conducted an observational cross-sectional study with data collected from January 2019 to February 2020 in 11 highly specialised hospitals (n = 510 nurses). We estimated missed nursing care utilising the MISSCARE questionnaire and used the Practice Environment Scale-Nursing Work Index instrument to assess the work environment. After describing the main attributes of the study sample according to the type of work environment, we constructed five adjusted fractional regression models, the first concerning the overall index of missed care, and the others pertaining to its various dimensions. RESULTS The sample analysed was balanced as regards adjustment variables according to the type of work environment. The adjusted estimates confirmed an inverse relationship between the missed care index and enjoying an enhanced, or favourable, work environment. Overall, the difference was 9 percentage points (pp); however, by dimension of missed care, the major differences between enhanced and attenuated, or unfavourable, work environments were registered for basic care, followed by patient education and discharge planning (4pp) and individual needs (8pp). CONCLUSIONS The work environment determines the frequency of missed nursing care, both overall and by dimension. Nursing managers need to create short- and mid-term strategies favouring positive work environments in order to improve working conditions for nursing professionals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recognizing the values and norms significant to healthcare organizations (Safety Culture) are the prerequisites for safety and quality care. Understanding the safety culture is essential for improving undesirable workforce attitudes and behaviours such as lack of adverse event reporting. The study assessed the frequency of adverse event reporting, the patient safety culture determinants of the adverse event reporting, and the implications for Ghanaian healthcare facilities. METHODS The study employed a multi-centre cross-sectional survey on 1651 health professionals in 13 healthcare facilities in Ghana using the Survey on Patient Safety (SOPS) Culture, Hospital Survey questionnaire. Analyses included descriptive, Spearman Rho correlation, one-way ANOVA, and a Binary logistic regression model. RESULTS The majority of health professionals had at least reported adverse events in the past 12 months across all 13 healthcare facilities. Teamwork (Mean: 4.18, SD: 0.566) and response to errors (Mean: 3.40, SD: 0.742) were the satisfactory patient safety culture. The patient safety culture dimensions were statistically significant (χ2 (9, N = 1642) = 69.28, p < .001) in distinguishing between participants who frequently reported adverse events and otherwise. CONCLUSION Promoting an effective patient safety culture is the ultimate way to overcome the challenges of adverse event reporting, and this can effectively be dealt with by developing policies to regulate the incidence and reporting of adverse events. The quality of healthcare and patient safety can also be enhanced when healthcare managers dedicate adequate support and resources to ensure teamwork, effective communication, and blame-free culture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite its association with patient safety, few studies on missed nursing care have been conducted in nursing homes. We aimed to describe individual and environmental factors in a sample of registered nurses (RNs) reporting missed nursing care in nursing homes, and to explore the association between these factors and missed nursing care. METHODS In the present, multicentre cross-sectional study, 217 RNs from 43 nursing homes in Northern Italy reported all episodes of missed nursing care (ie, any aspect of required care that was omitted or delayed) that occurred in the 20 most dependent residents (according to RNs' judgement; 860 residents in total) over 3 consecutive days. Multilevel multivariable logistic regression models were used to test possible explanatory factors of missed nursing care (individual, work-related, organisational, and work environment factors), which were entered in a step-wise manner. RESULTS Younger RNs (P=.026), freelance RNs (P=.046), RNs with a permanent contract (P=.035), and those working in publicly-owned nursing homes reported more episodes of missed nursing care (P<.012). Public ownership (odds ratio [OR]=9.88; 95% CI 2.22-44.03; P=.003), a higher proportion of residents with severe clinical conditions (OR=2.45; 95% CI 1.12-5.37; P=.025), a lower proportion of RNs (OR=2.24; 95% CI 1.10-4.54; P=.026), and perceived lack of time to care for residents (OR=2.33; 95% CI 1.04-5.26; P=.041) were statistically significantly associated with missed nursing care. CONCLUSION Factors associated with missed nursing care are similar in hospitals and nursing homes, and include heavy workload and perceived lack of time for care. Because missed nursing care in nursing homes represents tasks performed specifically by RNs, missed nursing care in this setting should be measured in terms of these tasks. An optimal skill mix is crucial to guarantee not only comfort and basic care for nursing home residents, but also good outcomes for residents with severe clinical conditions.

Abstract
Background: Patient safety is a major concern in the healthcare industry worldwide. Increasing patient safety is critical for avoiding negative outcomes in nursing care and achieving goals at the desired level of quality. One of the indicators of this quality care given to patient is known as missed care.
Aim: Aims of this study to explore the factors influencing missed care in order to improve the quality of nursing care.
Methods: This study is a systematic review that explores the factors influencing missed nursing care in hospitals. Meanwhile, the literature search was carried out in the CINAHL Pubmed, Ebsco, Science Direct, Proquest, Willey, Sage from 2017 to 2021.
Results: The results from six databases (n=3702) were sorted into 22 collected articles which include 18 quantitative, 2 qualitative, and 2 mixed methods. These findings highlighted three factors that influence missed nursing care: a lack of staffing, nurse competency, and the working environment.
Conclusion: The factors that contribute with missed nursing care in hospitals include lack of nurse staff, competency, and work environment. As a result, the nursing manager's critical role is to create adequate nursing staff, improve their competency, and foster a positive work environment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Especially in acute care, evidence points to an association between care staffing and resident outcomes. However, this evidence is more limited in residential long-term care (LTC). Due to fundamental differences in the population of care recipients, organisational processes and staffing models, studies in acute care may not be applicable to LTC settings. We especially lack evidence on the complex interplay among nurse staffing and organisational context factors such as leadership, work culture or communication, and how these complex interactions influence resident outcomes. Our systematic review will identify and synthesise the available evidence on how nurse staffing and organisational context in residential LTC interact and how this impacts resident outcomes. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We will systematically search the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus and PsycINFO from inception for quantitative research studies and systematically conducted reviews that statistically modelled interactions among nurse staffing and organisational context variables. We will include original studies that included nurse staffing and organisational context in LTC as independent variables, modelled interactions between these variables and described associations of these interactions with resident outcomes. Two reviewers will independently screen titles/abstracts and full texts for inclusion. They will also screen contents of key journals, publications of key authors and reference lists of all included studies. Discrepancies at any stage of the process will be resolved by consensus. Data extraction will be performed by one research team member and checked by a second team member. Two reviewers will independently assess the methodological quality of included studies using four validated checklists appropriate for different research designs. We will conduct a meta-analysis if pooling is possible. Otherwise, we will synthesise results using thematic analysis and vote counting. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval is not required as this project does not involve primary data collection. The results of this study will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications and conference presentation. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42021272671.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unfinished Nursing Care (UNC) concept, that express the condition when nurses are forced to delay or omit required nursing care, has been largely investigated as tasks left undone, missed care, and implicit rationing of nursing care. However, no summary of the available evidence regarding UNC antecedents has been published. The aim of this study is to identify and summarise antecedents of UNC as documented in primary studies to date. METHODS A systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines was conducted. MEDLINE, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and PROSPERO databases were searched for quantitative studies reporting the relationships between antecedents and UNC published after 2004 up to 21 January 2020. The reference lists of secondary studies have been scrutinised to identify additional studies. Two reviewers independently identified studies and evaluated them for their eligibility and disagreements were resolved by the research team. The quality appraisal was based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools, according to the study designs. A data extraction grid was piloted and then used to extract data. The antecedents that emerged were thematically categorised with an inductive approach. RESULTS Fifty-eight studies were included; among them, 54 were cross-sectional, three were cohort studies, and one was a quasi-experimental study. They were conducted mainly in the United States and in hospital settings. The UNC antecedents have been investigated to date at the (a) unit (e.g., workloads, non-nursing tasks), (b) nurse (e.g., age, gender), and (c) patient levels (clinical instability). CONCLUSIONS At the unit level, it is highly recommended to provide an adequate staff level, strategies to deal with unpredictable workloads, and to promote good practice environments to reduce or minimise UNC. By contrast, at the nurse and patient levels, there were no clear trends regarding modifiable factors that could decrease the occurrence of UNC. The map of antecedents that emerged can be used to design interventional studies aimed at changing research from merely descriptive to that which evaluates the effectiveness of interventions.

Abstract
AIMS Identify and examine drivers of nurse manager competency and high-quality practice environments. BACKGROUND Nurse managers are a key predictor of positive professional practice environments which are, in turn, associated with nurse, patient, and organizational outcomes. However, little work has examined the factors that contribute to nurse manager competency. METHODS Nurse managers completed online surveys which were matched to unit-level aggregate data of their subordinate direct care nurses' responses on the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. This resulted in a final sample of 541 nurse managers across 47 U.S. hospitals. Multilevel path analysis was utilized to assess a model of the antecedents and consequences of nurse manager competency. RESULTS Nurse manager competency and practice environments were predictive of missed nursing care and nurse-reported quality of care. Nurse manager experience was found to have twice the effect on competency as advanced education. CONCLUSIONS Nurse manager competency and its downstream effects are achieved through nurse manager experience and advanced education. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Nurse manager competency yields better practice environments and nursing care. Considering the influence of experience, careful attention should be paid to the competency development process of more novice nurse managers.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to illustrate the relationship between nurse staffing and missed care, and how missed care affects quality of care and adverse events in Thai hospitals. BACKGROUND Quality and safety are major priorities for health care system. Nurse staffing and missed care are associated with low quality of care and adverse events. However, examination of this relationship is limited in Thailand. METHODS This cross-sectional study collected data from 1188 nurses in five university hospitals across Thailand. The participants completed questionnaires that assessed the patient-to-nurse ratio, adequacy of staffing, missed care, quality of care and adverse events. Logistic regression models were used to estimate associations. RESULTS Higher patient-to-nurse ratio, poor staffing and lack of resource adequacy were significantly associated with higher odds of reporting missed care. Higher nurse-reported missed care was significantly associated with higher odds of adverse events and poor quality of care. CONCLUSIONS Poor nurse staffing was associated with missed care, and missed care was associated with adverse events and lower quality of care in Thai university hospitals. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Improving nurse staffing and assuring adequate resources are recommended to reduce missed care and adverse events and increase quality of care.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the relationships among nurse fatigue, individualized nursing care, and nurse-reported quality of care. DESIGN The study used a cross-sectional design. Data from 858 registered nurses providing bedside care in hospitals were collected between March and April 2021 in the United States. METHODS Participants completed a self-administered online survey, including the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion Recovery scale, the Individualized Care Scale-Nurse version, and a single item assessing nursing care quality. Relationships among the study variables were examined using multiple linear and logistic regression models. FINDINGS Nurses' higher levels of acute fatigue were significantly associated with decreased perceptions of individualized nursing activities provided to patients on their last shifts, specifically related to personal life condition and decision-making control. Nurses' higher levels of chronic fatigue were significantly associated with decreased perception of individualized nursing activities provided to patients on their last shifts related to clinical condition, personal life condition, and decision-making control. Nurses with higher levels of acute or chronic fatigue, and who perceived their nursing care activities as less individualized were less likely to assess their quality of care as excellent. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that addressing hospital nurses' acute and chronic fatigue may contribute to promoting the delivery of individualized nursing care and in improving patients' quality of care. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Healthcare institutions are encouraged to regularly monitor and manage nurse fatigue to improve the delivery of individualized and quality nursing care to their patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a valid and reliable scale to measure the role of the nursing professional in the community (REFCO). DESIGN Observational with cross-sectional and instrumental design. SITE: Populated centers and communities of the coast, highlands and jungle from Peru. PARTICIPANTS The validation phase of the questionnaire had the voluntary participation of 402 Peruvian adults (50.7% from the coast, 40.5% from the highlands and 8.8% from the jungle). INTERVENTIONS The elaborated questionnaire that measures perceptions about the role of the nursing professional in the community was applied. MAIN MEASUREMENTS The psychometric properties of the REFCO scale were analyzed, such as content validation and internal consistency through the calculation of Aiken's V, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and later confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), respectively. Finally, the reliability of the scale was calculated. RESULTS Overall, all values were statistically significant when evaluated with the V-Aiken coefficient. Likewise, the skewness and kurtosis values of all the items of the instrument did not exceed the range >±1.5. The correlations between factors 1 and 2 were significant (p < .05). The reliability of the scale presents a Cronbach's α coefficient = 0.865. CONCLUSIONS The REFCO scale has 9 items and 2 dimensions; outreach and education; with content and construct validity that provide evidence for community nursing categories, which is useful for measuring nursing work in the community field.

Abstract
The image of the hospital is presented to the public as a place of healing. Though the oft-criticized total institutions of the past have been notably dismantled, the totalizing practices therein are now operationalized in the health care system. Through the lens of Erving Goffman, this article offers ways in which health care institutions operationalize totalizing practices, contributing to the mortification of patients and nurses alike in service to the bureaucratic machine. This article examines the ways in which totalizing practices may disrupt the agency of both patients and nurses alike.

Abstract
AIM This study examined the aspects of the nurse practice environment and patient safety climate and the various job dimensions that contribute to the occurrence of missed nursing care. BACKGROUND Missed nursing care is a crucial healthcare concern that poses significant threats to patient safety. The available literature on missed nursing care is confined to high-resource nations, where hospital policies, mechanisms and processes to support professional nursing practice are well established. METHODS This is a multi-centre, cross-sectional study, using self-report scales, which involves 624 clinical nurses in selected hospitals in the Philippines. RESULTS Patient safety climate (β = -0.148, p = 0.001), decision authority (β = -0.101, p = 0.018) and staffing/resource adequacy (β = -0.086, p = 0.014) significantly predicted missed nursing care. Nurse, unit and hospital variables were not related with missed nursing care. DISCUSSION Nurses who perceived greater decision authority, positive safety climate and adequate staffing/resources were less likely to miss or omit patient care activities. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY Institutional measures to foster decision authority in nurses, improve safety climate and address staffing/resource issues can be a viable solution to reduce the occurrence of missed nursing care.

Abstract
Introduction: Nursing needs close interpersonal contact with the patient and emotional involvement, therefore can contribute to professional burnout and rationing of nursing care. Aim: Assessing the relationship between the rationing of nursing care and professional burnout in nursing staff. Materials and Methods: The study included a group of 219 nurses working in cardiovascular facilities. This was a cross-sectional study designed to investigate the relationship between factors of the care rationing and professional burnout. The survey data was collected with standardised and research instruments such as the revised Basel Extent of Rationing of Nursing Care questionnaire (BERNCA-R) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results: The total mean BERNCA-R score was 1.38 (SD = 0.62), while the total MBI score amounted to 38.14 (SD = 22.93). The specific components of professional burnout yielded the values: emotional exhaustion (M = 44.8), job dissatisfaction (M = 40.66), and depersonalisation (M = 28.95). Multiple linear regression showed that independent predictors of BERNCA-R score were emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, job dissatisfaction, and multi-jobs activity (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The level of rationing of nursing care in cardiovascular facilities increases along with emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and job dissatisfaction, and multi-jobs activity.

Abstract
Background: Nursing care has a significant impact on patient safety, which affects clinical outcomes, patients’ satisfaction with the care received and nursing personnel’s satisfaction with the care provided. This study aimed to determine the extent of nursing care rationing and its relationship with patient safety including identification of the specific reasons. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 245 nurses and was performed between April–June 2019 in four hospitals in Wrocław, Poland. The standardized and relevant research tools such as Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC) and the Perceived Implicit Rationing of Nursing Care (PIRNCA) were used. The data was submitted to hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The study was approved by the Bioethics Committee and was followed with the STROBE guidelines. Results: The PIRNCA scores were negatively correlated with the HSOPSC subscales, which indicates that more frequent rationing of nursing care was associated with lower levels of patient safety parameters. It was shown that the highest level of unfinished nursing care was associated with decreases in patient safety factors linked with supervisor manager expectations actions promoting safety (rs = −0.321, p < 0.001), teamwork within hospital units (rs = −0.377, p < 0.001), feedback and communication about error (rs = −0.271, p < 0.001), teamwork across hospital units (rs = −0.221, p < 0.01), and hospital handoffs transitions (rs = −0.179, p < 0.01). Moreover, the strongest association was observed between the PIRNCA scores with patient safety grade (rs = 0.477, p < 0.001). Also, the PIRNCA scores among the internal unit were significantly higher than in the intensive care and surgical units. Conclusion: Our study indicated the presence of nursing care rationing. Regarding patient safety, we found insufficient numbers of medical personnel and excessive personnel workload for providing safe care to patients, a lack of transparency in handling adverse event reports and analyses, and a lack of cooperation between hospital units regarding patient safety.

Abstract
AIMS To validate the 'safe and effective staffing tool' and explore the impact of COVID-19 on the quality of Australian primary health care (PHC). DESIGN A national survey was conducted from October to December 2020. METHODS The online survey was distributed via social media and professional organisations to PHC nurses. RESULTS Three-hundred fifty-nine PHC nurses participated. A two-factor solution was found with factors named; 'Perception of quality of care provided' and 'Personal satisfaction with care delivered'. Cronbach's alpha demonstrated good internal consistency for the total scale (α = .915) and each subscale (α = .879/α = .864). Nearly three-quarters of participants (71.3%) were satisfied with the quality of care they delivered. Participants working in general practice, and those with more nursing experience had significantly higher scores in the factor 'perceptions of quality of care provided' and the total 'quality and satisfaction with care'. A lack of time, inadequate supervision and support, and performing non-nursing duties were reported to be impacting care quality. Most participants (80.5%) reported that COVID-19 had impacted negatively on the detection and management of non-COVID related health conditions. CONCLUSION The 'safe and effective staffing tool' is a valid and reliable measure of perceived quality of care and satisfaction with care delivered. Many PHC nurses perceive that there has been an overall reduction in the quality of care delivered due to COVID-19 and feel that there is a lack of adequate supervision and workplace support. Given the limited baseline data, further research is required to understand the extent that COVID-19 impacts these findings. However, this study demonstrates that strategies need to be implemented to support PHC nurses to provide high-quality care to optimise health outcomes and maintain nurse satisfaction. IMPACT This is the first attempt to evaluate care quality in Australian PHC. Policymaking requires this evidence to drive changes to better support PHC nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies performed in Central European countries showed a high prevalence of missed nursing care in various clinical settings before the COVID-19 pandemic. AIMS The aim of the study was to investigate which domains of the work environment were significant predictors of missed nursing care activities in Czech hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS A cross-sectional study was used. The RANCARE guideline and STROBE checklist were followed for reporting in the study. The sample consisted of 371 nurses from four acute care hospitals. The MISSCARE Survey and the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index questionnaires were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using multiple linear and logistic regression analyses. RESULTS Nurses reporting unfavorable environments consistently describe a higher frequency of episodes of missed care. Prevalence estimates of missed care in Czech acute care hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic was predicted from the overtime work, the nurses' perception of the "Nursing foundations for the quality of care," and their satisfaction with their current position. CONCLUSIONS Missed nursing care could be mitigated by improving the nurses' work environment. Domains of the nurse work environment are known as structural modifiable factors and their refinement could be a cornerstone for interventions to reduce the prevalence of missed nursing care. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY Monitoring the conditions and aspects of the nurse work environment in hospitals and considering nurses' concerns about the work environment on an ongoing basis are important strategies for nurse supervision as well as for policymakers.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To investigate hospital, unit and staff variables as the correlates of missed nursing care (MNC) in Czech hospitals. BACKGROUND There is a considerable variability in patterns of MNC across different hospital, unit and staff characteristics. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted. The STROBE guidelines for reporting observational studies were followed for reporting of the research study. METHODS A sample of 513 nurses working in nine acute care hospitals was recruited. MNC activities were measured with the MISSCARE Survey. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and univariate logistic regression. RESULTS Type of unit was confirmed as a significant predictor of MNC. Staff characteristics (nurses' work position, level of education and perceived adequacy of unit staff) and hospital variables did not contribute significantly to MNC. CONCLUSIONS The study replicated the patterns of MNC across different conceptual approaches. MNC was influenced by work environment characteristics rather than individual staff variables. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The results of this research showed that missed nursing care is influenced by work environment characteristics rather than individual staff variables.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to examine the effects of work environments and occupational fatigue on care left undone in rotating shift nurses, and to identify the indirect (mediation) effect of work environments on care left undone through nurses' occupational fatigue in South Korean acute care hospitals. DESIGN This study employed a cross-sectional design using an online survey to collect data from 488 rotating shift nurses of acute care hospitals in Korea between November and December 2018. METHODS A mobile schedule management application for shift nurses was used to advertise the study and to send a link to the online survey. The survey included questions on the nurses' work environment characteristics, care left undone activities, and the Korean version of the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion/Recovery scale. Poisson regression was used to explore the relationships among work environments, occupational fatigue, and care left undone. Hayes' Model 4 and a bootstrapping analysis were used to identify the mediating effect of occupational fatigue on the relationship between work environments and care left undone. FINDINGS The average number of tasks left undone was 3.45 (SD = 2.19). The higher the acute and chronic fatigue levels noted among nurses, the higher were the occurrences of care left undone. Conversely, the higher the intershift recovery level, the lower were the occurrences of care left undone. The results showed a positive relationship between care left undone and overtime hours and the number of patients per nurse. Moreover, nurses' occupational fatigue mediated the relationship between work environments and care left undone. Night shifts per month and the number of consecutive days off had an indirect effect on care left undone through occupational fatigue. CONCLUSIONS High levels of occupational fatigue and poor intershift recovery among nurses can lead to care left undone. Nurses' occupational fatigue mediates the effect of work environment on care left undone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE It is crucial for healthcare administrators and leaders to develop policies and mandatory regulations to facilitate better working conditions for nurses, consequently reducing their occupational fatigue and decreasing the occurrence of care left undone in acute care hospitals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the psychometric properties of the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES-NW) among undergraduate nurses and to compare their perceptions of the nursing practice environment by academic year and unit type. BACKGROUND Despite the fact that nursing students develop most of their undergraduate learning and training in the nursing practice environment, their perception about it has not been considered to date. METHODS The psychometric properties were analysed on a sample of 180 undergraduate nurses. Data collection was carried out in 2018. Data were analysed using percentages, frequencies, mean, standard deviation and Mann-Whitney U test. Factor structure was evaluated with exploratory factor analysis, and reliability was evaluated with Cronbach's alpha. RESULTS Psychometric analysis showed an adequate construct validity and reliability for the PES-NWI. Cronbach's Alpha was 0.884. Undergraduate nurses perceived most hospitals as favourable, scoring the 'Nurse-physician relationships' factor highest and 'Staffing and resource adequacy' factor lowest. CONCLUSION The PES-NWI is a valid and reliable instrument that could be applied in future research to explore nursing students' perceptions of the nursing practice environment. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Nurse managers are responsible for supervising and ensuring that the nursing practice environment at university hospitals meets the necessary criteria to support the workplace learning of undergraduate nurses.

Abstract
The professional practice environment is a factor that can have a significant impact on missed nursing care. The study aimed to find a relationship between nurses’ perceptions of their professional practice environment and missed nursing care and job satisfaction. An additional aim was to find differences in nurses’ perceived rating of the professional practice environment according to hospital location and job position. A descriptive correlational study was performed. The sample included 513 general and practical nurses providing direct care in nine Czech hospitals. The Revised Professional Practice Environment scale and the Missed Nursing Care (MISSCARE) survey were used to collect data. The professional practice environment was most correlated with satisfaction with the current position (0.4879). The overall score of missed care correlated most strongly with the subscale “staff relationships” (−0.2774). Statistically significant differences in the rating of two subscales, “control over practice” and “cultural sensitivity”, were found between nurses from hospitals in district capitals and those from hospitals in smaller cities. Statistically significant differences in the rating of the “leadership and autonomy in clinical practice” and “teamwork” subscales were found between general nurses and practical nurses. The professional practice environment is related to nurse satisfaction and missed nursing care.

Abstract
AIMS The aim was to examine whether the level of optimism and job and life satisfaction is a differentiating factor from the level of implicit rationing of nursing care in a sample of Polish registered nurses. BACKGROUND Satisfaction with life and job is reflected by greater effectiveness of nurses at work and creates a positive work environment, which in turn may modulate the level of implicit rationing of nursing care. METHODS A cross-sectional multicentre research design was adopted, employing a representative sample of 1,010 registered Polish nurses identified between the beginning of January and the end of June 2019. Four self-report scales were used in this study: Basel Extent of Rationing of Nursing Care, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Satisfaction with Job Scale and Life Orientation Test-Revised. The results were analysed using the k-means method, Student's t test and two-way ANOVA. RESULTS Optimistic thinking, and satisfaction with job and life exerted a significant effect on the level of implicit rationing of nursing care among Polish nurses. Nurses from the group 'pessimistic' were at higher risk of nursing care rationing than those from the group 'optimistic'. CONCLUSION Strengthening of the personal competencies, providing support and responding to all identified needs might increase job satisfaction of nurses and hence reduce the risk of nursing care rationing. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT Leadership modelling and training in positive thinking might be the methods to support nurses and to prevent nursing care rationing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pulmonary embolism (PE) remains a common and life-threatening event. The use of ultrasound-assisted thrombolysis (USAT) for the delivery of thrombolytic agents to the clot has developed in the last 10 years. A search yielded no evidence-based practice guidelines for the nursing care of the patient with PE during and post USAT treatment and specifically when using the EKOS machine. OBJECTIVE The objective of this integrative review was to explore the literature and web for any information on the use of USAT for adults with PE both during and post treatment. Our goal was to examine nurse-specific practices to develop appropriate protocols. METHODS We conducted a search of PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Google for any guidelines, observational studies, or experimental studies using USAT for PE in adults. Nurse authors independently reviewed the articles using a standardized data coding form. Information abstracted included sample and setting characteristics, access characteristics, medication, sheath removal, compression, and bleeding events. RESULTS Twenty-two articles, published in 2008-2019, met the eligibility criteria. Most studies were small retrospective studies at single sites. Variation existed on the clinician, the clinical area for placement, the amount and duration of delivery of medication, and where care was provided during the infusion. Few studies noted sheath removal or compression procedures. Fifteen studies reported 1 fatal, 12 major, 4 moderate, and 36 minor bleeding events at the catheter insertion sites. CONCLUSION There is lack of sufficient information for the development of nursing practice guidelines for this new technology.

Abstract
AIM This study evaluated the role of nurse caring in predicting missed nursing care, adverse patient events and the quality of nursing care. BACKGROUND Missed nursing care is an issue essential in health care, as it is associated with adverse patient events. While studies have previously examined factors that result in missed nursing care activities and adverse events, the role of nurse caring itself in this context has not yet been explored. METHODS A cross-sectional research design was adopted, employing a convenience sample of 549 registered nurses from six hospitals in the Philippines identified between October 2018 and January 2019. Four self-report scales were used in this study as follows: the caring behaviour inventory, the missed nursing care scale, the adverse patient events scale and a single-item scale to measure the quality of nursing care. RESULTS Comforting or talking with patients and changing patients' positioning in bed were the most frequently missed care tasks, while patient/family complaints and patient/family verbal abuse were the most frequently reported adverse events. Nurse caring strongly predicted the quality of care, missed nursing care and patient adverse events. CONCLUSION Fostering caring behaviours among nurses has a profound effect on nurses' decision to omit or provide nursing care as well as on reducing adverse events and promoting quality nursing care. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING MANAGEMENT The adoption of strategies to improve caring behaviours among nurses is critically important to prevent or reduce the occurrence of errors and adverse events.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To analyse oral care delivery in one hospital through exploring experiences from both nurses' and patients' perspectives and examining patients' oral health. BACKGROUND Oral health problems are associated with undernutrition and other general health outcomes. Although oral care belongs to the essentials of nursing, it is often neglected. Improving oral health may require behaviour change of both nurses and patients. Defining tailored strategies need a clear view on the context. DESIGN A context analysis in one hospital using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design was reported following the EQUATOR guidelines using two checklists: COnsolidated criteria for REporting Qualitative research (qualitative research) and STROBE (observational research). METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 nurses and 11 patients. The topic list was based on the Integrated Change Model. Prospective oral examination was performed among 91 surgical patients using the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT). RESULTS Nurses acknowledged that they did not prioritise oral care in daily practice. Furthermore, they lacked knowledge and skills to identify and provide care for oral problems. Nurses mentioned helpful resources to perform oral care, like standardised language and instruments. However, they had no access to or were unaware of them. Patients admitted that they did not prioritise oral care due to their sickness during hospitalisation, were unaware of the importance of oral care, but felt responsible for their oral care. The most prominent oral problems identified with the OHAT were unclean mouths (n = 75, 82%), unhealthy gum and tissues (n = 55, 60%) and dry mouth (n = 42, 46%). CONCLUSIONS This context analysis identified inadequate oral care due to lack of positive attitude and knowledge in both nurses and patients, skills for nurses, and resources. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The behavioural factors indicate strategies for development of a multicomponent intervention to improve oral care in this hospital, nutritional status and general health outcomes.
