Job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and associated factors among hospital nurses: a cross-sectional study in Türkiye

Job satisfaction strongly affects nurses' life satisfaction and is directly affected by life satisfaction. Our study aimed to determine nurses' life and job satisfaction, show their relationship, and evaluate the factors affecting them. This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2022 at a university hospital in Türkiye. The study population included all nurses working at the hospital for at least one month, and 920 nurses participated. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, which consisted of sections on sociodemographic characteristics, job and life satisfaction, and factors related to the nursing profession. Job satisfaction was measured using the Index of Job Satisfaction, while life satisfaction was assessed with the Life Satisfaction Scale, both validated tools. Data collection occurred during periodic health examinations through face-to-face interviews. Most participants chose the nursing profession willingly and found it suitable for themselves. However, many reported dissatisfaction with their earnings. Higher job satisfaction was associated with older age, having children, good perceived health, shorter weekly working hours, willingly choosing the nursing profession and unit, and favorable working conditions and income. Similarly, life satisfaction was higher among those with good perceived health, fewer weekly working hours, willingly chosen profession and unit, and no smoking or chronic diseases. Supportive working conditions and adequate income strongly influenced both job and life satisfaction. A significant, positive, and moderate correlation was found between job and life satisfaction, highlighting their interconnectedness. These findings suggest that improving nurses' working conditions, ensuring adequate income, and supporting healthier lifestyles could enhance job and life satisfaction. Enhancing working conditions is essential to improving nurses' job satisfaction, which, in turn, positively impacts their overall life satisfaction. Policymakers should prioritize initiatives that address workplace challenges and foster a supportive environment for nurses.

Balancing Knowledge and Health: A Comparative Analysis of Students and Healthcare Workers Nutrition Related Health Behaviors, a Cross-Sectional Study

The study aimed to investigate nutrition-related health behaviors among nursing and medical students compared to healthcare workers (HCWs), including nurses and physicians. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and November 2022, using the I-MEDAS and lifestyle-related behavior questionnaires. The participants included nursing and medical students, nurses, and physicians, with a total of 384 participants: 16.9% physicians, 23.17% nurses, and 59.9% students, 93% of whom were nursing students. The average I-MEDAS score (out of 17) was 7 for physicians, 8 for nurses, and 8 for students, with no significant differences in lifestyle behavior scores between the groups (p = 0.11), although nurses tended to score lower. Nurses also had a significantly higher BMI compared to physicians and students (p < 0.001). Physicians and nurses reported lower engagement in leisure activities and household chores, fewer sleep hours, and poorer sleep quality. The findings highlight a decline in healthy lifestyle behaviors and poor adherence to the Mediterranean diet among HCWs and students, particularly nurses, emphasizing the need for interventions to promote healthier habits in these groups.

Benefits of Mediterranean and Japanese Diets among Nurses: A Scoping Literature Review

INTRODUCTION

The present study aimed at all the benefits induced by taking the Mediterranean or Japanese diet among nurses and whether any beneficial differences in intakes between the two diets were considered.

METHODS

The author searched PubMed and Embase databases for medical subheadings terms and free full text referring to "Diet," "Mediterranean," "Japanese," and "Nurses" before 31st December 2022.

RESULTS

A total of 14 studies were included in this scoping review, which better underlined all the benefits implicated in the Mediterranean or Japanese diets assumption and also if there were any differences between the two diets. These eating behaviors were exclusively investigated among nurses.

CONCLUSION

The nursing profession has always been considered the most stressful healthcare activity. However, some important concerns in the regular lifestyle, such as eating and physical activity, might help to live better.

Public views on healthcare workers' burnout before and during COVID-19: A comparative study

INTRODUCTION

Understanding burnout among nurses and physicians may mobilize public support for increasing budgets, personnel, and trust in both routine and pandemic times. The study aimed to examine public views of nurse and physician burnout both before and 1 year after the COVID-19 outbreak.

DESIGN

This study was conducted in two phases in a pre-post design.

METHODS

The general public (a random sample) responded to a structured questionnaire with 1-2 open-ended questions: (a) before the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2019 during routine life (n = 504) and (b) 1 year after the COVID-19 outbreak, in 2021 (n = 500). Quantitative and qualitative data on public perceptions of nurse and physician burnout, its sources and consequences, were collected.

RESULTS

The public view was that hospital physicians and even more so hospital nurses suffer from higher burnout than those working in the community, and that this worsened during the pandemic. Three themes related to caregiver burnout were identified: (a) work overload, (b) lack of sensitivity, empathy, and motivation, and (c) impaired ability to provide quality care.

CONCLUSIONS

The public is aware of the experiences of caregivers both in times of routine and in emergency. Healthcare management must influence public opinion in order to receive support for organizational steps.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Healthcare leaders should leverage public support in order to receive backing for organizational moves aimed at improving work conditions and, in turn, the quality of care and patient outcomes.

Using data visualization to characterize whole-person health of public health nurses

OBJECTIVE

To characterize patterns in whole-person health of public health nurses (PHNs).

DESIGN AND SAMPLE

Survey of a convenience sample of PHNs (n = 132) in 2022. PHNs self-identified as female (96.2%), white (86.4%), between the ages 25-44 (54.5%) and 45-64 (40.2%), had bachelor's degrees (65.9%) and incomes of $50-75,000 (30.3%) and $75-100,000/year (29.5%).

MEASUREMENTS

Simplified Omaha System Terms (SOST) within the MyStrengths+MyHealth assessment of whole-person health (strengths, challenges, and needs) across Environmental, Psychosocial, Physiological, and Health-related Behaviors domains.

RESULTS

PHNs had more strengths than challenges; and more challenges than needs. Four patterns were discovered: (1) inverse relationship between strengths and challenges/needs; (2) Many strengths; (3) High needs in Income; (4) Fewest strengths in Sleeping, Emotions, Nutrition, and Exercise. PHNs with Income as a strength (n = 79) had more strengths (t = 5.570, p < .001); fewer challenges (t = -5.270, p < .001) and needs (t = -3.659, p < .001) compared to others (n = 53).

CONCLUSIONS

PHNs had many strengths compared to previous research with other samples, despite concerning patterns of challenges and needs. Most PHN whole-person health patterns aligned with previous literature. Further research is needed to validate and extend these findings toward improving PHN health.

Socioeconomic and ethnic disparities along five waves of the COVID-19 pandemic: Lessons we have not yet learnt

PURPOSE

The COVID-19 pandemic, now in its third year, has served as a magnifying glass, exposing the inequitable impact of the outbreak. The study aims to analyze the relationships between the socioeconomic and ethnic characteristics of the population and COVID-19 testing, infection, and vaccination throughout the first five pandemic waves.

DESIGN

A secondary analysis of an existing national database was conducted in Israel from March 2020 to May 2022. During the study period, Israel underwent 5 pandemic peaks or waves (March-April 2020, September-October 2020, January-February 2021, September 2021, and January-February 2022).

METHODS

Data on tests performed, confirmed COVID-19 cases, and uptake of vaccine doses one through four during the study period, were analyzed by the socioeconomic (SE) cluster (scale of 1 to 10) and ethnicity (Jewish, Arab, mixed Jewish- Arab ethnicity) of the residents' local authority.

RESULTS

COVID-19 testing rate gradually increased from the lowest to the highest SE clusters, with rates 3.2 times higher in the second highest, compared with the lowest cluster. People living in Jewish localities were tested twice more than those in Arab or mixed localities. The rate of confirmed cases was 1.9, 3.0, 6.3, and 4.3 times higher, respectively, among cluster 1 (the lowest) compared with cluster 9 (second highest) in the first, second, third, and fourth pandemic waves, respectively. Rates among people living in Arab or mixed localities were higher compared with those living in Jewish localities in 3 of the 5 waves. Vaccine uptake revealed a clear social gradient, with the percentage of the population being vaccinated gradually increasing from cluster 1 (the lowest) to the higher clusters. The relative difference between the lowest and highest SE clusters increased from 2.4 in the first vaccine dose to 5.5 in the third and fourth doses. Ethnic disparities also grew with vaccine dose, with a Jewish to an Arab rate ratio of 1.1, 1.2, 1.6, and 4.5 for vaccine doses 1,2,3, and 4, respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Covering 26 consecutive months of the COVID-19 pandemic at the national level, the current study demonstrates that despite high accessibility of tests and vaccines to the entirety of the population and tailored outreach efforts, socioeconomic, and ethnic disparities not only failed to diminish, but they even widened along the five pandemic waves.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The pandemic exposed the vulnerability of the weakest segments of the population. Therefore, the combined action of the Ministry of Health, health providers, and local authorities is required to further adapt health messages to the cultural characteristics of diverse populations, to equip the health professionals with practical tools to promote healthy choices among the vulnerable populations, and to build communities that promote healthy lifestyles. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of reducing health disparities and building trust between vulnerable populations and the healthcare system during "normal" or routine times, to better prepare for times of emergencies, such as the current pandemic.
