Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has brought various opportunities and challenges to critical care nurses, whose emergency abilities in caring for critically ill patients are related to their safety, clinical effectiveness, and improved prognosis. Currently, there is a lack of research on the actual situation and influencing factors of ICU nurses' emergency ability during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although empirical observations from different departments can provide valuable basis for the health system to formulate preventive measures, efficient training programs and future public emergencies. DESIGN A cross-sectional descriptive study. METHODS Data were collected from 486 subjects through electronic surveys from November 8 to 15, 2022, in seven general public hospitals (all tertiary A hospitals) in Beijing, China. RESULTS The emergency ability of ICU nurses hover at the intermediate level (145.42 ± 23.29). The variables of work experience, participated in PHE rescue activities, participated in PHE education, cumulative rescue more than 10 times and positive coping were associated with the emergency ability of ICU nurses. CONCLUSION Despite the COVID-19 restrictions, the emergency ability of ICU nurses is acceptable, at a medium level. The ICU nurse of seniority, participated in PHE rescue activities, participated in PHE education, cumulative rescue more than 10 times had excellent emergency ability; The importance of positive coping style was also evident, which means that intervention in psychological is seen as necessary.

Abstract
Background Establishing an empowering work environment is significantly contributing to nurse's job satisfaction, performance, retention, and organizational success. This study aimed to conduct a scoping review to chart and synthesize current research on interventions to support nurses' psychological empowerment. Methods Ten databases were searched, including PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, EBSCOhost, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, and OpenGrey, following the Joanna Briggs Institute's methodology for scoping reviews. The search encompassed literature from its inception to 5 September 2024. The selection of studies followed predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. A manualized systematic quality assessment method was applied to the included studies, and the extracted data were charted using a series of tables. Results Eleven studies were included. Seven studies reported the theoretical framework used. The interventions are all educational and are divided into two main sections: theoretical learning and applied practice. The duration of the interventions spanned a wide range of hours. The intervention format was based on offline training. The participants included both nurse managers and nurses. The evaluation measures were mostly multiple time points using the Spreitzer Psychological Empowerment Instrument. The interventions were generally effective, although some studies reported different results. Conclusion Research on psychological empowerment interventions for nurses is still in the developmental phase, with preliminary evidence validating their positive effects. Future research should focus on conducting randomized controlled studies with larger sample sizes, selecting appropriate theoretical frameworks to design interventions, enriching the content and form of interventions, and strengthening evaluation measures to improve the quality of psychological empowerment interventions for nurses. Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological empowerment notably impacts nurses' work engagement and high-quality care. A spiritual climate is a work environment that respects individuals and encourages them to express personal views. Previous studies have shown that a spiritual climate enhances psychological empowerment, however, the relationship between them among the nursing population remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the effect of a spiritual climate on nurses' psychological empowerment and provide a scientific basis for improving psychological empowerment among nurses. METHODS A cross-sectional survey of 837 nurses from five hospitals in Sichuan Province, Southwest China, was conducted using a convenience sampling method; this survey included nurses' demographic characteristics, the Psychological Empowerment Scale (PES), and the Chinese version of the Spiritual Climate Scale (C-SCS). The data were analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression. RESULTS The sample of 837 nurses attained a psychological empowerment score of (45.49 ± 6.42) and a spiritual climate score of (75.25 ± 16.75). The one-way ANOVA revealed that psychological empowerment scores among nurses varied based on differences in age, department, years of work experience, professional title, level of work intensity, and children (yes/no). Pearson's correlation analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between the spiritual climate and nurses' psychological empowerment (r = 0.564, P < 0.001), and multiple linear regression analysis showed that working in the intensive care unit (ICU), work intensity, and the four items pertaining to spiritual climate influenced nurses' psychological empowerment, explaining 32.6% of the total variance in psychological empowerment. CONCLUSION The findings suggested that the spiritual climate perceived by nurses and psychological empowerment are moderately high. Working in the ICU, work intensity, and the four items pertaining to spiritual climate influence nurses' psychological empowerment. Nursing managers should pay attention to the daily work intensity of nurses, especially ICU nurses, organize work tasks reasonably, promote dynamic and balanced nurse human resource deployment based on patients' conditions and nurses' workloads, and implement scientific scheduling plans to establish a positive spiritual climate in the workplace. Additionally, group workshops and systematic training programs can effectively enhance psychological empowerment among nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses are on the frontline for managing epidemic diseases. Different aspects of clinical nursing competencies during epidemics are important issues that need investigation. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the required clinical competencies for nurses during epidemics. Understanding these competencies could provide valuable information for health care services and nursing education organizations to prepare nurses for future epidemics. METHODS The qualitative conventional content analysis study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with 12 nurses that were actively engaged in providing patient care during COVID-19 pandemic in Shahid Beheshti hospital in Kashan/Iran, from October 2022 to March 2023. The data analysis process was conducted according to 5 steps suggested by Graneheim and Lundman. RESULTS After analysis, the 159 competencies were derived from interviews that were categorized to 11 subcategories, and three categories of clinical nursing skills in epidemics, knowledge of epidemics, and soft skills for nurses in epidemics. CONCLUSION Nurses need wide range of competencies to address the professional expectations regarding providing acceptable care during epidemics. Knowing these competencies can help nursing managers to prepare nurses for crisis such as what world experienced during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background The Saudi Arabian government has published its 2030 vision for improving health care to meet worldwide standards for the nursing profession. To fulfill this vision, building large-scale healthcare facilities is necessary. Among the most common occupations, nursing is vital to health care systems. Although working in health care institutions is challenging, demanding, and comprehensive, they are created to save lives and enhance patient satisfaction. Therefore, health care organizations must seek to develop psychologically empowered and decision-making nurses who can help meet clients' demands and enhance patient care, safety, quality, and outcomes. This study aims to determine the association between psychological empowerment (PE) and clinical decision-making (CDM) among staff nurses. Methods This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional correlation design. Three Saudi Ministry of Health-affiliated hospitals in the Al-Baha region were included. The sample size was calculated using the Raosoft online sample size calculator, with a total of 318 participants. The study sample included nurses working in inpatient, outpatient, and critical care departments. Convenience sampling techniques with inclusion and exclusion criteria were employed. An online survey with three sections was used for data collection: sociodemographic characteristics, the psychological empowerment instrument, and the nursing decision-making instrument. Data collection began at the beginning of February 2023 and was completed by the beginning of April 2023. Results The participants were 318 nurses working in critical areas, inpatient, and outpatient departments at three governmental hospitals in the Al-Baha region. Overall, 285 participants (89.6%) had a high level of PE, and the majority, 263 participants (82.7%), exhibited flexible-oriented decision-making. Approximately three-quarters of the sample, 281 participants (88.4%), were female, and more than half of the staff nurses, 187 participants (58.8%), were married. The majority of participants, 250 (78.6%), had a bachelor's degree. Regarding professional experience, most staff nurses, 134 participants (42.1%), had between one and five years of experience, and the majority worked in inpatient units, 160 participants (50.3%), while 104 (32.7%) worked in critical care. Conclusion The current study found a significant association between nurses' PE and CDM. Nurses with the highest PE were the most flexible in their CDM. Moreover, the findings of this study offer some points that nurse managers and leaders can use to generate empowerment and make their staff better decision-makers. One recommendation is to develop training and coaching programs to enhance PE among staff nurses, thereby raising their work meaningfulness, which would reflect in better CDM. Additionally, this study recommends that future research be conducted to examine how PE affects CDM.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Evidence shows that throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses suffered from emotional symptoms, yet in spite of this, few studies within "positive psychology" have analyzed the emergence/promotion of positive traits, such as hardiness. In this context, the present study aimed to test a model regarding the mediating role of self-efficacy between anxiety experienced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and hardiness assessed six months later among nurses in critical care units (CCU) in Spain. Materials and Methods: An observational, descriptive, prospective longitudinal study with two data collection periods: (1) from the 1 to the 21 June 2020 (final phase of the state of alarm declared in Spain on 14 March) in which socio-demographic and occupational variables, anxiety (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, DASS-21), self-efficacy (General Self-Efficacy Scale, GSES) and basal resilience (Resilience Scale-14, RS-14) were assessed, and (2) a follow-up 6 months later (January-March 2021) in which hardiness (Occupational Hardiness Questionnaire, OHQ) was evaluated. To analyze the data, multivariate regressions were performed using the PROCESS macro (simple mediation, model 4). Results: A total of 131 Spanish nurses from CCUs, with a mean age of 40.54 years (88.5% women) participated in the study. Moderate and severe levels of anxiety were observed in 19.1% of the sample. Significant and positive correlations were observed between self-efficacy, hardiness and resilience (all p < 0.001). Significant negative correlations were observed between anxiety and self-efficacy (p < 0.001), hardiness (p = 0.027) and resilience (p = 0.005). The indirect effect of anxiety on hardiness through self-efficacy was significant (Effect (SE) = -0.275 (0.100); LLCI = -0.487, ULCI = -0.097), contributing to 28% of the variance, including resilience (p = 0.015), age (p = 0.784), gender (p = 0.294) and years of experience (p = 0.652) as covariates. A total mediation was observed (non-significant anxiety-hardiness direct effect; Effect (SE) = -0.053 (0.215), t = 0.248, p = 0.804, LLCI = -0.372, ULCI = 0.479). Conclusions: The results suggest that in Spanish CCU nurses, anxiety experienced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic may contribute to the development of hardiness through positive resources such as self-efficacy.

Abstract
Aim The objective was to investigate the impact of structural empowerment and demographic factors on the psychological empowerment of nurses. Background The empowerment of nurses plays a crucial role in improving patient care and achieving successful healthcare outcomes. When nurses feel empowered in their work environment, they tend to remain dedicated to their jobs and experience higher levels of job satisfaction and engagement. Methods This cross-sectional study utilized a convenience sample of 287 nurses recruited from various hospital units, resulting in a response rate of 94.7%. Data were collected through a paper survey consisting of three sections: structural empowerment, psychological empowerment, and demographics. Results The first hierarchical regression explains 57.0% variance in nurses' psychological empowerment (F = 78.52, p < 0.001). Age (β = 0.37, p < 0.01) and structural empowerment (β = 0.69, p < 0.001) have a positive influence on nurses' psychological empowerment. Conversely, having a bachelor's degree (β = -0.16, p < 0.01) had a negative impact psychological empowerment. The second hierarchical regression clarifies the specific aspects of structural empowerment that influences positively on nurses' psychological empowerment: access to opportunities (β = 0.13, p < 0.01), support (β = 0.13, p < 0.01), resources (β = 0.35, p < 0.001), and informal power (β = 0.12, p < 0.01). Conclusion This study emphasizes the importance of considering demographic variables, such as age and education, in conjunction with structural empowerment to effectively enhance nurses' psychological empowerment. Implications for Nursing Management. Nursing managers should tailor their empowerment strategies based on the demographic characteristics of their nurses. It is essential to focus on providing nurses with access to opportunities, support, resources, and informal power. These insights provide valuable guidance for nursing managers to enhance nurses' psychological well-being, job satisfaction, and overall quality of life. Ultimately, this contributes to positive outcomes for patients, nursing staff, and healthcare organizations.

Abstract
The primary frontline healthcare providers who have frequent contact with COVID-19 patients are nurses. Many nurses have been infected with COVID-19 and have experienced severe emotional exhaustion and burnout. It is essential to assess nurses' psychological health during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with burnout, resilience, and empowerment among Indonesian COVID-19 nurse survivors. In this cross-sectional study, 182 COVID-19 survivor nurses participated from September to November 2022 with convenience sampling. An online survey using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI), the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), and the Psychological Empowerment Scale (PES) were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using descriptive and binary logistic regression analyses. The majority of the nurses were aged between 30-45 years (61.6%), and females (67.4%) experienced burnout. Higher resilience was found among nurses contracting COVID-19 (83.1%). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the absence of psychological impact (OR = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.21-0.93) is significantly related to higher burnout experience. In addition, workplace, especially in hospital (OR = 4.32, 95% CI = 1.09-17.09) was associated with resilience, and a gap time after receiving negative COVID-19 result (OR = 3.90, 95% CI = 1.27-12.03) was correlated with psychological empowerment, in our results 4-6 month after had a negative result was at higher risk. To maintain a positive psychological aspect for COVID-19 nurse survivors, it needs to implement psychological support in the workplace and ensure an appropriate workload of nurse professionals.

Abstract
AIM To explore the nursing workforce allocation in intensive care units (ICUs) of COVID-19-designated hospitals during the epidemic peak in China. DESIGN A nationwide cross-sectional online survey. METHODS A total of 37 head nurses and 262 frontline nurses in 37 ICUs of COVID-19-designated tertiary hospitals located in 22 cities of China were surveyed. The self-reported human resource allocation questionnaire was used to assess the nursing workforce allocation. RESULTS The average patient-to-nurse ratio was 1.89 ± 1.14, and the median working hours per shift was 5 h. The top four majors of front-line nurses in ICUs were respiratory (31.30%), lemology (27.86%), intensive care (21.76%) and emergency (17.18%). We also found that a smaller average patient-to-nurse ratio (odds ratio [OR]: 0.328, 95% CI: 0.108, 1.000), longer average weekly rest time per person (OR: 0.193, 95% CI: 0.051, 0.729) and larger proportion of 6-9 working years (OR: 0.002, 95% CI: 0.001, 1.121) decreased the occurrence of nursing adverse events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical competency is the ability to integrate knowledge, skills, attitudes and values into a clinical situation and it is very important in nursing education, clinical settings, nursing management, and crises. This study aimed to investigate nurses' professional competence and its correlates before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS We conducted this cross-sectional study before and during the COVID-19 outbreak and recruited all nurses working in hospitals affiliated to Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences, southern Iran, so we included 260 and 246 nurses in the study before and during the COVID-19 epidemic, respectively. Competency Inventory for Registered Nurses (CIRN) was used to collect data. After inputting the data into SPSS24, we analysed them using descriptive statistics, chi-square and multivariate logistic tests. A significant level of 0.05 was considered. RESULTS The mean clinical competency scores of nurses were 156.97 ± 31.40 and 161.97 ± 31.36 before and during the COVID-19 epidemic, respectively. The total clinical competency score before the COVID-19 epidemic was not significantly different from that during the COVID-19 epidemic. Interpersonal relationships (p = 0.03) and desire for research/critical thinking (p = 0.01) were significantly lower before the COVID-19 outbreak than during the COVID-19 outbreak. Only shift type had an association with clinical competency before the COVID-19 outbreak, while work experience had an association with clinical competency during the COVID-19 epidemic. CONCLUSION The clinical competency among nurses was moderate before and during the COVID-19 epidemic. Paying attention to the clinical competence of nurses can improve the care conditions of patients, and nursing managers should improve the clinical competence of nurses in different situations and crises. Therefore, we suggest further studies identifying factors improving the professional competency among nurses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic produced changes in intensive care units (ICUs) in patient care and health organizations. The pandemic event increased patients' risk of developing psychological symptoms during and after hospitalisation. These consequences also affected those family members who could not access the hospital. In addition, the initial lack of knowledge about the virus and its management, the climate of fear and uncertainty, the increased workload and the risk of becoming infected and being contagious, had a strong impact on healthcare staff and organizations. This highlighted the importance of interventions aimed at providing psychological support to ICUs, involving patients, their relatives, and the staff; this might involve the reorganisation of the daily routine and rearrangement of ICU staff duties. AIM To conduct a systematic review of psychological issues in ICUs during the COVID-19 pandemic involving patients, their relatives, and ICU staff. METHODS We investigated the PubMed and the ClinicalTrials.gov databases and found 65 eligible articles, upon which we commented. RESULTS Our results point to increased perceived stress and psychological distress in staff, patients and their relatives and increased worry for being infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 in patients and relatives. Furthermore, promising results were obtained for some psychological programmes aiming at improving psychological measures in all ICU categories. CONCLUSION As the pandemic limited direct inter-individual interactions, the role of interventions using digital tools and virtual reality is becoming increasingly important. All considered, our results indicate an essential role for psychologists in ICUs.
