Abstract
This systematic review synthesizes evidence from research investigating the biological correlates of latent transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology (e.g., the p-factor, internalizing, externalizing) across the lifespan. Eligibility criteria captured genomic and neuroimaging studies investigating general and/or specific dimensions in general population samples across all age groups. MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO were searched for relevant studies published up to March 2023 and 46 studies were selected for inclusion. The results revealed several biological correlates consistently associated with transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology, including polygenic scores for ADHD and neuroticism, global surface area and global gray matter volume. Shared and unique associations between symptom dimensions are highlighted, as are potential age-specific differences in biological associations. Findings are interpreted with reference to key methodological differences across studies. The included studies provide compelling evidence that the general dimension of psychopathology reflects common underlying genetic and neurobiological vulnerabilities that are shared across diverse manifestations of mental illness. Substantive interpretations of general psychopathology in the context of genetic and neurobiological evidence are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Correlational studies have frequently linked neuroticism to lower well-being and poorer social adaptation. In this study, we examined the longitudinal associations of neuroticism with life satisfaction and aspects of social adaptation (i.e., loneliness, number of close friends, and interpersonal trust). METHOD Cross-lagged panel models (CLPMs) and random intercepts cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) were used to analyze the prospective associations between variables in a nationally representative adult sample from Germany (N = 5,663 to 11,079 per analysis; 2-4 measurement waves with lags of 4-5 years). RESULTS CLPMs indicated that higher neuroticism was related to lower life satisfaction, higher loneliness, fewer friends, and lower interpersonal trust, but not vice versa. At the within-person level, RI-CLPMs revealed similar findings with increased neuroticism predicting decreases in life satisfaction, increases in loneliness, and decreases in interpersonal trust. Indices of social adaptation partially mediated the link between neuroticism and life satisfaction at the between-person but not at the within-person level. Exploratory multigroup analyses support the generalization of the cross-lagged effects of neuroticism on life satisfaction and social adaptation across age, gender, and geographical regions (East versus West Germany). CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the role of neuroticism in shaping psychosocial outcomes over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preschool psychiatric symptoms significantly increase the risk for long-term negative outcomes. Transdiagnostic hierarchical approaches that capture general ('p') and specific psychopathology dimensions are promising for understanding risk and predicting outcomes, but their predictive utility in young children is not well established. We delineated a hierarchical structure of preschool psychopathology dimensions and tested their ability to predict psychiatric disorders and functional impairment in preadolescence. METHODS Data for 1253 preschool children (mean age = 4.17, s.d. = 0.81) were drawn from three longitudinal studies using a similar methodology (one community sample, two psychopathology-enriched samples) and followed up into preadolescence, yielding a large and diverse sample. Exploratory factor models derived a hierarchical structure of general and specific factors using symptoms from the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment interview. Longitudinal analyses examined the prospective associations of preschool p and specific factors with preadolescent psychiatric disorders and functional impairment. RESULTS A hierarchical dimensional structure with a p factor at the top and up to six specific factors (distress, fear, separation anxiety, social anxiety, inattention-hyperactivity, oppositionality) emerged at preschool age. The p factor predicted all preadolescent disorders (ΔR2 = 0.04-0.15) and functional impairment (ΔR2 = 0.01-0.07) to a significantly greater extent than preschool psychiatric diagnoses and functioning. Specific dimensions provided additional predictive power for the majority of preadolescent outcomes (disorders: ΔR2 = 0.06-0.15; functional impairment: ΔR2 = 0.05-0.12). CONCLUSIONS Both general and specific dimensions of preschool psychopathology are useful for predicting clinical and functional outcomes almost a decade later. These findings highlight the value of transdiagnostic dimensions for predicting prognosis and as potential targets for early intervention and prevention.

Abstract
Anxiety and depression are pervasive and pernicious mental health problems for young adults. Developmental trajectories of adolescent temperament (Effortful Control, Negative Emotionality, and Positive Emotionality) may help us predict who will experience anxiety/depression during young adulthood. The present study used longitudinal data from a large, community sample of Mexican-origin youth ( N = 674) to examine how temperament develops across adolescence (age 10–16) and whether the developmental trajectories of temperament are associated with anxiety/depression during young adulthood (ages 19 and 21). Results indicate that Effortful Control, Negatively Emotionality, and the Affiliation facet of Positive Emotionality tend to decrease across adolescence, whereas Surgency tends to increase. Smaller decreases in Effortful Control and greater increases in Positive Emotionality across adolescence were associated with fewer anxiety/depression symptoms during young adulthood, whereas smaller decreases in Negative Emotionality were associated with more anxiety/depression symptoms later on. Thus, temperament development serves as both a protective factor (Effortful Control, Positive Emotionality) and a risk factor (Negative Emotionality) for later anxiety/depression in Mexican-origin youth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research using latent variable modelling has identified a superordinate general dimension of psychopathology, as well as several specific/lower-order transdiagnostic dimensions (e.g., internalising and externalising) within the meta-structure of psychiatric symptoms. These models can facilitate discovery in genetic and neuroscientific research by providing empirically derived psychiatric phenotypes, offering greater validity and reliability than traditional diagnostic categories. The prospective review outlined in this protocol aims to integrate and assess evidence from research investigating the biological correlates of general psychopathology and specific/lower-order transdiagnostic symptom dimensions. Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies investigating general population samples of any age group or developmental period will be included to capture evidence from across the lifespan. METHODS AND ANALYSIS MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycINFO databases will be systematically searched for relevant literature. The review will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Eligibility criteria were designed to capture psychiatric genetic (i.e., molecular genetic and genomic) and neuroimaging (i.e., brain structural and brain functional) studies investigating latent transdiagnostic dimension(s) or structural model(s) of psychopathology across any age group. Studies which include or exclude participants based on clinical symptoms, disorders, or relevant risk factors (e.g., history of abuse, neglect, and trauma) will be excluded. Biometric genetic research (e.g., twin and family studies), candidate gene studies, neurophysiology studies, and other non-imaging based neuroscientific studies (e.g., post-mortem studies) will be excluded. Study quality and risk of bias will be assessed using the Joanna Briggs Checklist for Analytical Cross-Sectional Studies, the Joanna Briggs Checklist for Cohort Studies, and the Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) system. Meta-analysis will be conducted if sufficient data is available. DISCUSSION This protocol outlines the first systematic review to examine evidence from studies investigating the latent structure and underlying biology of psychopathology and to characterise these relationships developmentally across the lifespan. The prospective review will cover a broad range of statistical techniques and models used to investigate latent transdiagnostic dimensions of psychopathology, as well as a numerous genetic and neuroscientific methods.
