Abstract
Sleep problems such as poor sleep quality and insomnia are common issues among medical and paramedical students, which may lead to mental health disorders and impaired academic performance. Despite the availability of different sleep programs and psychological interventions, as well as a few reviews exploring their effects on sleep variables in college students, a systematic review comparing their effectiveness in medical students is still lacking. This systematic review aims to investigate psychological interventions to improve sleep quality and address sleep problems in medical students. Four databases (PubMed, SciDirect, Scopus, and PsycNet) were searched to retrieve original research articles written in English and published from January 1, 2000, to September 30, 2023. Outcome measures were sleep quality, insomnia, sleep behavior, sleep quantity, and sleep-related problems. A total of 19 articles met the inclusion criteria, and 4 categories of interventions were identified (1) sleep hygiene, (2) cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), (3) a combination of sleep hygiene/CBT with other modalities, and (4) other psychotherapeutic interventions such as progressive muscle relaxation, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy yoga, and mindfulness. Ten studies were randomized control trials, two were quasi-experimental, and the remaining seven were pre- and post-intervention designs (one group only and no control). Overall, both individual CBT and sleep hygiene education led to significant improvement in sleep quality and sleep problems among medical students, but CBT was more effective with consistent positive effects on sleep quality. Nevertheless, significant improvements in sleep quality and sleep-related outcomes were observed in studies combining these psychological interventions. Effective comparisons were limited due to the substantial heterogeneity between the studies. Further research is required to elucidate the type of psychological intervention, optimal mode of delivery, duration, and number of contacts of these interventions, including the moderators to improve sleep quality among medical students.

Abstract
Childhood trauma has been found to have serious negative consequences for mental and physical health. However, the precise mechanisms through which trauma influences health outcomes are unclear. Childhood trauma-related disruptions to sleep in adulthood represent an important potential mechanism. Two 7-day multilevel studies investigated the effects of childhood trauma on daily sleep outcomes and stress-related variables and whether the effects of trauma on sleep outcomes were mediated through these stress-related variables (or vice versa). Participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire before a 7-day online daily diary study. Measures of daily stress, perseverative cognition, and sleep were completed daily. Multi-level modelling found that higher levels of childhood neglect were associated with poorer daily sleep quality, shorter sleep duration, longer sleep onset latency, and higher daily stress and rumination levels. Higher childhood abuse was associated with shorter sleep duration, greater morning tiredness, and higher levels of daily stress, rumination, and worry. Childhood trauma was found also to have bidirectional, indirect effects on sleep quality and morning tiredness through daily stress-related variables. The current findings suggest that interventions aimed at mitigating the negative effects of childhood trauma should also incorporate components that target modifiable risk factors, such as sleep, stress, worry, and rumination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND College students and young adults (18-25 years) frequently experience poor sleep quality, with insomnia being particularly prevalent among this population. Given the widespread use of digital devices in the modern world, electronic device-based sleep interventions present a promising solution for improving sleep outcomes. However, their effects in this population remain underexplored. OBJECTIVE We aimed to synthesize current evidence on the effectiveness of electronic device-based sleep interventions in enhancing sleep outcomes among college students and young adults. METHODS In total, 5 electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science) were searched to identify randomized controlled trials on digital sleep interventions. Sleep interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia, mindfulness, and sleep education programs delivered via web-based platforms or mobile apps, were evaluated for their effects on sleep quality, sleep parameters, and insomnia severity. Pooled estimates of postintervention and follow-up effects were calculated using Hedges g and 95% CIs under a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed with I2 statistics, and moderator and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore sources of heterogeneity. Evidence quality was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluations framework. RESULTS This study included 13 studies involving 5251 participants. Digital sleep interventions significantly improved sleep quality (Hedges g=-1.25, 95% CI -1.83 to -0.66; I2=97%), sleep efficiency (Hedges g=0.62, 95% CI 0.18-1.05; I2=60%), insomnia severity (Hedges g=-4.08, 95% CI -5.14 to -3.02; I2=99%), dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep (Hedges g=-1.54, 95% CI -3.33 to -0.99; I2=85%), sleep hygiene (Hedges g=-0.19, 95% CI -0.34 to -0.03; I2=0%), and sleep knowledge (Hedges g=-0.27, 95% CI 0.09-0.45; I2=0%). The follow-up effects were significant for sleep quality (Hedges g=-0.53, 95% CI -0.96 to -0.11; I2=78%) and insomnia severity (Hedges g=-2.65, 95% CI -3.89 to -1.41; I2=99%). Moderator analyses revealed several significant sources of heterogeneity in the meta-analysis examining the effects of digital sleep interventions on sleep outcomes. Variability in sleep quality was influenced by the sleep assessment tool (P<.001), intervention type and duration (P=.001), therapist guidance (P<.001), delivery mode (P=.002), history of insomnia (P<.001), and the use of intention-to-treat analysis (P=.001). Heterogeneity in insomnia severity was primarily attributed to differences in the sleep assessment tool (P<.001), while the effect size on sleep efficiency varied based on intervention duration (P=.02). The evidence quality ranged from moderate to very low certainty across measured outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Digital sleep interventions are effective in improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia severity, with moderate effects on dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep, sleep hygiene, and sleep knowledge. These interventions offer a viable approach to managing sleep problems in college students and young adults. Abstract
BACKGROUND Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-I) provides flexibility but requires significant time and includes potentially challenging components such as sleep restriction therapy. This raises questions about its incremental effectiveness compared to less demanding minimal interventions such as sleep hygiene psychoeducation. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the incremental efficacy of self-guided iCBT-I with optional on-demand feedback for university students with insomnia compared to a single session of digital psychoeducation on sleep hygiene. METHODS In a randomized controlled trial, 90 students with insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index ≥10) were randomly allocated to self-help-based iCBT-I (45/90, 50%) or one session of digital sleep hygiene psychoeducation with stimulus control instructions (active control group [aCG]: 45/90, 50%). The self-help-based iCBT-I consisted of 6 sessions on psychoeducation, sleep restriction, and stimulus control, including written feedback on demand from an eCoach. Assessments occurred at baseline (T1), 8 weeks after treatment (T2), and at a 6-month follow-up (T3) via web-based self-assessment and diagnostic telephone interviews. The primary outcome was insomnia severity at T2. Analyses of covariance were conducted in an intention-to-treat sample. Secondary outcomes included diagnoses of insomnia and major depression, sleep quality, sleep efficiency, worrying, recovery experiences, recovery activities, presenteeism, procrastination, cognitive irritation, and recuperation in sleep. RESULTS There was no difference in insomnia severity at T2 between the iCBT-I group (mean 11.27, SD 5.21) and aCG group (mean 12.36, SD 4.16; F1,989.03=1.12; P=.29; d=-0.26; 95% CI 0.68 to 0.17). A significant difference emerged at T3 (iCBT-I: mean 9.43, SD 5.36; aCG: mean 12.44, SD 5.39; F1,426.15=4.72; P=.03), favoring iCBT-I with a medium effect (d=-0.57; 95% CI 1.07 to -0.06). Most secondary outcomes revealed no significant differences between the groups. In total, 51% (23/45) of participants in the iCBT-I group completed all 6 sessions, and 69% (31/45) completed the 4 core sessions. CONCLUSIONS In the short term, students might benefit from low-intensity, easily accessible digital sleep hygiene psychoeducation or iCBT-I. However, it appears that iCBT-I offers superiority over sleep hygiene psychoeducation in the long term. Abstract
Background Sleep disturbances and their associated health issues are common among medical students. Despite this, the epidemiology of sleep disturbances among medical students in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remains inadequately understood. Our objective was to synthesise the prevalence of sleep disturbances, including poor sleep quality, insufficient sleep duration, and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and their variation in relation to academic performance and stress levels. Methods We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis. Two independent reviewers searched PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and the reference lists of relevant studies and reviews up to May 2024. We assessed the quality of the included studies using a risk of bias tool. We performed meta-analyses using random-effects models and used Cochran's Q between-subgroups statistic to test for differences across subgroups. We used the I2 statistic to assess the statistical heterogeneity. Further, we assessed the publication bias using Doi plots. Results We included 150 studies conducted in 16 MENA countries. We found that 59.1% of medical students suffer from poor sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index mean (x̄) = 8.5; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 7.0-10.1), 59.8% have insufficient sleep duration (<7 hours per night) averaging 6.1 hours per night (95% CI = 5.4-6.9), and 38.4% experience EDS (Epworth Sleepiness Scale x̄ = 8.6; 95% CI = 8.0-9.1). Our results indicate a significantly higher prevalence of poor sleep quality among students with moderate or high stress levels during the preclinical training period and in low-income MENA countries. A significantly higher prevalence of insufficient sleep duration was found among students during preclinical academic years. A significantly higher prevalence of EDS was found among students in public medical schools and those in low-income MENA countries. We observed no differences in poor sleep quality and EDS between students with poor and good academic performance. Conclusions Our findings highlight the substantial prevalence of sleep disturbances among MENA medical students. Medical schools must address this critical issue with targeted, locally informed, and culturally appropriate interventions. Further research is needed to assess the association between sleep disturbances and identify factors for tailored interventions that mitigate the adverse consequences on medical students' health and well-being. Abstract
Objective: To evaluate sleep continuity, timing, quality, and disorder in relation to suicidal ideation and attempts among college students. Participants: Eight hundred eighty-five undergraduates aged 18-25 in the southwestern United States. Methods: Participants completed questionnaires on sleep, suicide risk, mental health, and substance use. Differences in sleep variables were compared by lifetime and recent suicidal ideation and suicide attempts using covariate-adjusted and stepwise regression models. Results: A total of 363 (41.0%) individuals reported lifetime suicidal ideation, of whom 172 (47.4%) reported suicidal ideation in the last 3 months and 97 (26.7%) had attempted suicide in their lifetime. Sleep disturbances were prevalent among those with lifetime suicidal ideation or a lifetime suicide attempt. Insomnia was identified as the best predictor of recent suicidal ideation, but this relationship did not survive adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: Sleep continuity, quality, and sleep disorders are broadly associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors among college students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep and mental health problems are very common in university students. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a multi-component sleep-mood intervention on improving sleep and mental health in university students with clinically significant insomnia symptoms, and to investigate possible mediators. METHODS Thirty-five participants were randomized to the Sleep Mood Intervention: Live Effectively (SMILE) intervention (n = 23), or wait-list group (n = 12). SMILE is a multi-component group therapy and includes elements of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), mindfulness, and lifestyle modifications, in four weekly two-hour sessions. The primary outcome was insomnia severity. Secondary outcomes were severity of depression and anxiety, and quality of life (QoL). Dysfunctional beliefs and attitudes about sleep and pre-sleep arousal were assessed as mediators. RESULTS Intention-to-treat analysis showed significant time x treatment interaction on insomnia symptoms p = .02, partial η²= 0.15, d = 0.84 [95% CI: 0.63 to 1.14], with significantly lower insomnia severity for SMILE compared to waitlist at post-test. No significant effects were found on depression d = 0.02 [95% CI: -0.35 to 0.37], anxiety d = 0.15 [95% CI: -0.16 to 0.53], and QoL d = 0.09 [95% CI: -0.25 to 0.42]. Dysfunctional beliefs mediated the effect on insomnia severity, but pre-sleep arousal did not. CONCLUSIONS This integrated group intervention is associated with reductions in insomnia symptoms in university students. Since no significant effects were detected on mood and QoL, future studies with larger sample size may explore the effects of this intervention on these outcomes. Abstract
This study investigated: i) the effects of loneliness on self-reported sleep outcomes and daily stress/hassles, ii) whether the effects of loneliness on sleep outcomes were mediated through prior-day stress/hassles and iii) if the effects of loneliness on daily stress/hassles were mediated through prior-night sleep measures. Using a 7-day diary design, this study aimed to investigate relationships between loneliness, daily sleep outcomes and daily stress/hassles. Participants (N = 174, Mage 19.95, 86.2% female) completed the UCLA Loneliness Scale once before a 7-day online diary twice per day. Measures of daily stress and hassles were completed before bed and sleep outcomes the following day. Multilevel modelling found higher levels of loneliness were associated with poorer sleep quality, greater pre-sleep arousal, morning tiredness, fewer total hours slept and higher levels of daily stress and hassles across the 7-day study. Loneliness was found also to have indirect effects on sleep quality, pre-sleep arousal and morning tiredness through prior-day daily stress and hassles. In addition, loneliness also had indirect effects on daily stress and hassles through prior night sleep measures. The current findings suggest that interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of loneliness should also incorporate components that target modifiable risk factors such as sleep and stress.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sleep difficulties are common amongst university students and are associated with mental illness and reduced wellbeing. This paper reports a pilot study of Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) tailored specifically for university students. It was hypothesized that the intervention would be feasible, acceptable, and improve sleep, anxiety, depression, and wellbeing. METHOD Students aged 18-25 participated via videoconferencing small group sessions of CBT-I. Feasibility was assessed through sign-up, consent rates, and study attrition, while acceptability was assessed using intervention adherence and a measure of intervention acceptability. Outcome measures included sleep quality, insomnia, suicidal ideation, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and wellbeing, and were assessed at baseline and post-intervention. RESULTS Participants were 44 students (M = 21.8 years). Feasibility was confirmed by sign-up and consent rates (80% of the students who expressed interest agreed to participate); overall study attrition was 48%, comprised largely of participants not commencing treatment (27%). Participants perceived the program as effective and logical and made use of the skills suggested. In terms of adherence, 82% of the participants who engaged with treatment attended two or more sessions and 63% attended all four sessions; and 92% were either very satisfied or mostly satisfied. Sleep quality, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and wellbeing all significantly improved from pre- to post-intervention. DISCUSSION There was evidence that the CBT-I intervention tailored for university students was acceptable to participants and could be feasible to deliver. Sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and wellbeing improved significantly. These findings suggest that the intervention is suitable for evaluation in a fully powered randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There are well-documented health disparities among sexual and/or gender minority (LGBTQ+) individuals generally, but there is limited research investigating the disparities in health-related lifestyle factors and mental health among LGBTQ+ graduate students, which is a group that may be especially vulnerable. PARTICIPANTS This project was a secondary analysis of data from the American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment's (NCHA) Fall 2019 wave, which included 7,766 graduate students. METHODS Students self-reported engagement in health-related lifestyle factors and psychological distress. Welch's independent samples t-tests were used to compare differences in psychological distress and lifestyle behaviors and multiple linear regression models were used to test lifestyle factors as predictors of LGBTQ+ psychological distress. RESULTS LGBTQ+ graduate students reported worse lifestyle profiles compared to their peers and greater psychological distress. Sleep quality had the strongest association with psychological distress among LGBTQ+ graduate students. CONCLUSIONS These findings have important implications for policies and interventions to improve health and decrease suffering in LGBTQ+ graduate students.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Performance of Cognitive Refocusing Treatment for Insomnia (CRT-I) relative to stimulus control treatment (SCT) remains unknown among college students. This pilot trial compared single-session, electronic-based, peer-led CRT-I to SCT, and as well as awareness-based (AC) and no-treatment (NTC) controls. PARTICIPANTS College students (N = 82; Mage=18.59 [SD = 0.78]; 58% female; 61% White; 16% Hispanic) with insomnia symptoms were randomly assigned to CRT-I (n = 12), SCT (n = 14), and AC (n = 14) conditions, or non-randomly recruited to NTC (n = 42). METHODS All participants completed baseline and one-month follow-up surveys, and reported daily task enactment (except NTC). RESULTS Feasibility ratings were comparable across conditions. Within-group treatment effects revealed greater improvements in (a) insomnia symptom severity among CRT-I (d = 1.13) and SCT (d = 1.66) groups relative to AC (d = 0.90) and (b) pre-sleep cognitive arousal among CRT-I (d = 0.94) and SCT (d = 1.42) groups relative to AC (d = 0.75). CONCLUSIONS Brief, electronic-based, peer-led CRT-I and SCT interventions appear feasible and potentially efficacious for college insomnia.

Abstract
Background Sleep problems occur in many university students which affects their mental health and daily functioning. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has been proven effective in adults but research in university students, who struggle to maintain a 24-hour rhythm, is still limited. We hypothesize that a guided digital CBT-I intervention, enriched with components on the biological clock ('i-Sleep & BioClock') will be effective in reducing insomnia severity and improving mental health outcomes for students with sleep problems. Objectives We aim to evaluate the effectiveness of a guided online sleep and biological clock self-help intervention in improving sleep, depression symptoms, anxiety symptoms, functioning, academic performance, and quality of life in university students at 6 weeks and 18 weeks. Methods This is a two-arm parallel-group superiority randomized controlled trial, comparing a 5-week guided online 'i-Sleep & BioClock' intervention to online psychoeducation (PE). We aim to include 192 university students (Bachelor, Master, and PhD) with at least subthreshold insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index ≥10), aged ≥16, who can speak Dutch or English. We are excluding students with current risk for suicide or night shifts. The primary outcome is insomnia severity. Secondary outcomes include sleep estimates (sleep and light exposure diary), depression, anxiety, functioning, quality of life, and academic performance. The effectiveness of the intervention compared to online PE will be evaluated using linear mixed models. Discussion The current study tests the effectiveness of an online self-help intervention for university students who suffer from sleep problems. This trial builds upon an open feasibility study and will provide evidence of an online guided self-help program for students. The findings of this study will determine the potential wider dissemination of the intervention to address the high need for available and accessible help for students experiencing insomnia. Abstract
Poor sleep quality, a global public health concern, poses a significant burden on individuals, particularly health care university students facing intense academic stress. A three-center cross-sectional study was conducted at the Higher Institute of Nursing and Health Sciences in Tetouan (Morocco), Faculty of Medicine in Tangier (Morocco) and Faculty of Nursing in Valencia (Spain). We collected various data using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Pittsburgh sleep quality questionnaire, the international physical activity questionnaire (IPAQ) and the smartphone addiction questionnaire short-version (SAS-SV). A total of 1210 students were included in our study (mean age 20.4 years, 67.2% female, nursing students (66.2%) and medical students (33.8%), 76.1% students from Morocco and 33.9% from Spain). Analysis revealed a higher prevalence of poor sleep quality among Moroccans students compared to Spanish ones (p < 0.001), that nursing students showed less favorable sleep quality than medical students (p < 0.011) and that living with a chronic disease was linked to less favorable sleep quality (p < 0.001). Lastly, intense or weak physical activity and smartphone addiction were correlated with poor sleep quality (p < 0.001). In the multivariate analysis, an association persisted between poor sleep quality and factors such as the country of study (Odds ratio (OR): 6.25 [95% Confidence Interval (CI): 4.34-9.09]), involvement in nursing studies (OR: 3.50 [95% CI: 2.36-5.27]), and the presence of chronic diseases (OR: 2.70 [95% CI: 1.72-4.16]), (p < 0.01 each). Our findings highlight the multifaceted factors affecting sleep quality in young university students. The implications underscore the imperative of interventions tailored to this demographic group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood trauma is experienced by approximately one third of young people in the United Kingdom and has been shown to confer an increased risk for mental health difficulties in adulthood. Understanding the associations between these factors before negative health outcomes manifest in adulthood is imperative to help inform the development of interventions. The aims of this study were two-fold; first, to investigate the effects of childhood trauma on daily stress-related vulnerability factors over a period of 7 days and to test whether any observed relationships were moderated by protective or risk factors. Second, to explore the indirect effects of childhood trauma on reasons for living, optimism, daily suicide ideation, defeat and entrapment through the daily stress-related vulnerability factors. METHODS 212 participants were recruited to an ecological momentary assessment study to complete three diaries per day for a 7-day period. Participants completed daily measures of stress, hassles, executive functioning, impulsivity, sleep quality (stress-related vulnerability factors) as well as measures of reasons for living, optimism, daily thoughts of suicide, defeat and entrapment. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire was also completed at baseline. RESULTS Analyses found that childhood trauma was significantly associated with higher scores on the daily stress-related vulnerability factors and positively related to each of the daily indicators of suicide risk. The study also uncovered key pathways whereby trauma had indirect effects on reasons for living, optimism, daily thoughts of suicide, defeat and entrapment through executive functioning, impulsivity, sleep quality and stress. LIMITATIONS The measures of executive function and sleep were self-reported and future research ought to replicate the current findings using more objective methods. DISCUSSION The findings from this study highlight the complexity of childhood trauma and its damaging effects on stress-related vulnerability factors and poorer mental health outcomes. Greater understanding of pathways by which trauma may impact later health outcomes is essential for development of interventions.

Abstract
Objective Sleep quality is a crucial concern, particularly among youth. The integration of health coaching with question-answering (QA) systems presents the potential to foster behavioural changes and enhance health outcomes. This study proposes a novel human-AI sleep coaching model, combining health coaching by peers and a QA system, and assesses its feasibility and efficacy in improving university students' sleep quality. Methods In a four-week unblinded pilot randomised controlled trial, 59 university students (mean age: 21.9; 64% males) were randomly assigned to the intervention (health coaching and QA system; n = 30) or the control conditions (QA system; n = 29). Outcomes included efficacy of the intervention on sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index; PSQI), objective and self-reported sleep measures (obtained from Fitbit and sleep diaries) and feasibility of the study procedures and the intervention. Results Analysis revealed no significant differences in sleep quality (PSQI) between intervention and control groups (adjusted mean difference = -0.51, 95% CI: [-1.55-0.77], p = 0.40). The intervention group demonstrated significant improvements in Fitbit measures of total sleep time (adjusted mean difference = 32.5, 95% CI: [5.9-59.1], p = 0.02) and time in bed (adjusted mean difference = 32.3, 95% CI: [2.7-61.9], p = 0.03) compared to the control group, although other sleep measures were insignificant. Adherence was high, with the majority of the intervention group attending all health coaching sessions. Most participants completed baseline and post-intervention self-report measures, all diary entries, and consistently wore Fitbits during sleep. Conclusions The proposed model showed improvements in specific sleep measures for university students and the feasibility of the study procedures and intervention. Future research may extend the intervention period to see substantive sleep quality improvements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Community-oriented primary health care is a health promotion model that includes community diagnosis of a targeted community. PURPOSE This educational project aimed to develop and implement an innovative approach of applying the principles of evidence-based practice in the teaching of community diagnosis, where the class of nursing students serves as an example of community. METHODS The method consisted of a lecture and an evidence-based simulation of community diagnosis based on data collection regarding the lifestyle and health behaviors of third-year nursing students from a 4-year academic nursing program (200 students; 90% response rate). RESULTS The data analysis revealed insufficient consumption of fruits, vegetables, and unsweetened fluids; excessive consumption of red and processed meat; insufficient engagement in physical activity; high anxiety level; and sleep deprivation. CONCLUSIONS This educational approach allowed an interactive presentation of community health diagnostic methodology as well as community health problem prioritization applying the principles of an evidence-based approach. The method also improves students' awareness of their health and makes them better ambassadors of promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Abstract
Previous systematic reviews and meta-analysis of sleep interventions with young adults have not reached consensus on what contributes to their efficacy. Behaviour-change theories may influence the efficacy of interventions; hence, the aim of this research was to investigate the role of such theories in sleep interventions with this population. Six electronic databases and reference lists were searched (April-May 2021) for published sleep behaviour-change interventions with emerging adults (aged 18-29 years) that used control groups. A selection of 20 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria, but only six were based on behaviour-change theories. Meta-analysis was run with eight studies, as the others had a high risk of bias or did not present the necessary data to calculate Hedges' g. The estimation of a random effects model for the studies showed a small effect in the sleep quality of the participants in the experimental group (g = -0.26; 95% confidence interval -0.42 to -0.09), with low levels of heterogeneity (I2 = 21%), and a small 95% prediction interval (-0.59 to 0.08). Although we could not examine theory or any other moderators of the effect, a qualitative analysis of the behaviour-change techniques present in the interventions leads us to hypothesise that there is not a direct link between behaviour-change techniques and the success of the intervention. Other characteristics of the interventions may be linked to their variable levels of efficacy and should be investigated in the future, as for now there are no answers as to what the key is for successful sleep interventions.

Abstract
Background Research has shown that university students engage in behaviors that are associated with poor sleep quality, such as higher caffeine and alcohol intake. Yet studies exploring eating habits and weight loss mechanisms related to sleep quality have generally been inconclusive. This study explored total daily caffeine consumption (along with different sources of caffeine) as well as dieting and exercising to lose weight in the last 30 days as risk factors for poor sleep quality among an undergraduate university population. Methods Full-time undergraduate students (n = 400) participated in an anonymous online survey about various health behaviors at a large, mid-Atlantic university. Multivariable linear regressions were run to consider subjective sleep quality in relation to caffeine consumption and dieting behavior along with other covariates. A sensitivity analysis was run to explore how different types of caffeinated beverages were associated with sleep quality as well. All analyses were conducted using SAS JMP Version 16. Results A stepwise multivariable linear regression controlling for alcohol use, grade point average, biological sex, and stress showed significant increases in sleep quality scores (indicating worsening sleep quality). Total caffeine consumption remained significant through the models until psychosocial factors were added (B = 0.003, p = 0.0035). The sensitivity analysis indicated that total caffeine consumption from soda remained significant across all models, significantly increasing sleep quality scores (B = 0.01; p = 0.0054). Discussion Higher amounts of caffeine from sodas were associated with more significant decreases in sleep quality than other types of caffeine, including energy drinks, coffee, and tea. Dieting or exercising to lose weight was not significantly associated with sleep quality. The results of this study can help to refine intervention efforts designed to improve sleep quality among undergraduate university students. Behavioral interventions specific to reducing caffeine intake, specifically from caffeinated sodas, may prove to be beneficial with this population.

Abstract
PURPOSE This meta-analysis was to assess the efficacy of digital psychological interventions to improve physical symptoms (i.e., fatigue, pain, disturbed sleep, and physical well-being) among cancer patients, as well as to evaluate the variables that possibly moderate intervention effects. METHODS Nine databases were searched for the literature up to February 2023. Two reviewers independently conducted a quality assessment. Effect sizes were reported as the standardized mean difference (Hedge's g) and estimated using a random-effects model. RESULTS The meta-analysis included 44 randomized clinical trials comprising 7200 adults with cancer. Digital psychological interventions were associated with significant improvements in short-term fatigue (g = -0.33; 95% CI, -0.58 to -0.07) and disturbed sleep (g = -0.36; 95% CI, -0.57 to -0.15), but with non-significant changes in pain (g = -0.23; 95% CI, -0.68 to 0.21) and physical well-being (g = 0.31; 95% CI, -0.18 to 0.80). Additionally, no alleviation in long-term physical symptoms was observed. In subgroup analysis, results suggest that the country significantly moderated the effectiveness of digital psychological interventions in alleviating fatigue. CONCLUSIONS Digital psychological interventions can be effective for improving short-term fatigue and disturbed sleep in patients with cancer. Clinicians could consider digital psychological interventions as a possible and efficient addition to better manage some of the physical symptoms during and after cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many university students have difficulties with sleep; therefore, effective psychological treatments are needed. Most research on psychological treatments to improve sleep has been conducted with middle-aged and older adults, which means it is unclear whether existing psychological treatments are helpful for young adult university students. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to discover university student preferences for a psychological intervention to improve sleep quality. METHODS Focus groups were conducted over 3 stages to examine students' views regarding content, format, and session duration for a psychological intervention to improve sleep. A thematic analysis was conducted to analyze participant responses. RESULTS In total, 30 participants attended small focus group discussions. Three key themes were identified: (1) program development, (2) help-seeking, and (3) student sleep characteristics. Program development subthemes were program format, program content, and engagement facilitators. Help-seeking subthemes were when to seek help, where to access help, stigma, and barriers. Student sleep characteristics subthemes were factors disturbing sleep and consequences of poor sleep. CONCLUSIONS Students emphasized the need for a sleep intervention with an in-person and social component, individualized content, and ways to monitor their progress. Participants did not think there was a stigma associated with seeking help for sleep problems. Students identified the lack of routine in their lifestyle, academic workload, and the pressure of multiple demands as key contributors to sleep difficulties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Emerging work suggests that racism-related stressors may contribute to adverse sleep health, yet little is known about how culturally relevant resources may influence the relationship between racism-related stressors and adverse sleep health. The aim of this study was to examine associations between weekly reports of racial hassles and young adults' sleep health (i.e., sleep onset latency, total sleep time, sleep quality) and to determine whether various forms of parental ethnic-racial socialization would moderate these associations. METHODS Participants were 141 college students (Mage = 20.7 years, standard deviation (SD) = 1.22, 70% female) who identified as either Black (n = 88; 62.4%) or Latinx (n = 53; 37.6%). Participants completed an initial 1.5-hour assessment in the laboratory and 4 weekly sleep diary surveys (assessed sleep health and depressive symptoms). RESULTS Weekly racial hassles are related to greater sleep onset latency, decreased total sleep time, and poorer sleep quality. The promotion of mistrust and cultural socialization significantly moderated associations between weekly racial hassles and sleep onset latency and total sleep time, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results provide supportive evidence that parental ethnic-racial socialization practices, a preemptive cultural resource, may be an understudied mechanism in sleep health research. Future research is needed to clarify the role of parental ethnic-racial socialization in promoting sleep health equity among youth and young adults.

Abstract
The present study sought to examine associations between anxiety sensitivity and both sleep and physical activity among college students, who are particularly vulnerable to sleep disturbance, decreased physical activity, and the development of psychopathology, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were 683 college students (Mage = 20.33, SD = 3.58; 72% female; 70.3% White) who completed self-report measures online for course credit. Results indicated that after controlling for the effects of age, gender identity, and race, greater sleep disturbance was significantly associated with higher overall anxiety sensitivity (7% unique variance; β = 0.27, t = 6.67, p < .001) as well as its three subdomains (physical concerns: 4% variance; β = 0.21, t = 4.97, p < .001; cognitive concerns: 6% variance; β = 0.25, t = 6.17, p < .001; social concerns: 6% variance; β = 0.26, t = 6.22, p < .001). Additionally, more time spent walking was associated with greater anxiety sensitivity physical concerns (1% variance; β = 0.11, t = 2.52, p = .012) and greater vigorous intensity physical activity was associated with lower anxiety sensitivity social concerns (1% variance; β = -0.13, t = -2.76, p = .006). These findings suggest that sleep problems may be more universally relevant to anxiety sensitivity than physical activity and interventions to promote healthier sleep may be useful for decreasing anxiety sensitivity in college students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Existing research has demonstrated that depression is positively related to smartphone addiction, but the role of sleep has not been discussed thoroughly, especially among engineering undergraduates affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. AIM To evaluate sleep as a mediator of the association between smartphone addiction and depression among engineering undergraduates. METHODS Using a multistage stratified random sampling method, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 692 engineering undergraduates from a top engineering university in China, and data were collected by self-reported electronic questionnaires. The data included demographic characteristics, such as age, gender, the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version (SAS-SV), the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to examine the association between smartphone addiction and depression, while structural equation models were established to evaluate the possible mediating role of sleep. RESULTS Based on the cutoffs of the SAS-SV, the rate of smartphone addiction was 63.58 percent, with 56.21 percent for women and 65.68 percent for men, among 692 engineering students. The prevalence of depression among students was 14.16 percent, with 17.65 percent for women, and 13.18 percent for men. Smartphone addiction was positively correlated with depression, and sleep played a significant mediating effect between the two, accounting for 42.22 percent of the total effect. In addition, sleep latency, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction significantly mediated the relationship between depression and smartphone addiction. The mediating effect of sleep latency was 0.014 [P < 0.01; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.006-0.027], the mediating effect of sleep disturbances was 0.022 (P < 0.01; 95%CI: 0.011-0.040), and the mediating effect of daytime dysfunction was 0.040 (P < 0.01; 95%CI: 0.024-0.059). The influence of sleep latency, sleep disturbances, and daytime dysfunction accounted for 18.42%, 28.95%, and 52.63% of the total mediating effect, respectively. CONCLUSION The results of the study suggest that reducing excessive smartphone use and improving sleep quality can help alleviate depression.

Abstract
University is a time of significant transitions during a young adult's life, with delayed and shortened sleep and poor mental health a common occurrence. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effect of both multi-component and single-component sleep interventions on improving university students' sleep and mental health. Five databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL and Cochrane Library) were searched for relevant literature published until April 2022. Treatment studies including university students aged 18-24 years, participating in a sleep intervention (multi-component, e.g., CBT-I, or single-component, e.g., sleep hygiene) were eligible. Comparator groups were either active, i.e., alternative intervention, or passive, i.e., waitlist control or treatment-as-usual, with study outcomes to include measures of sleep and mental health. Of 3435 references screened, 11 studies involving 5267 participants, with and without insomnia symptoms, were included for a narrative synthesis on intervention designs and methodology. Six studies eligible for meta-analyses showed a moderate effect of sleep interventions in reducing sleep disturbance (SMD = -0.548 [CI: -0.837, -0.258]) at post-treatment, alongside a small effect in improving anxiety (SMD = -0.226 [CI: -0.421, -0.031]) and depression (SMD = -0.295 [CI: -0.513, -0.077]). Meta-regression examining study and intervention characteristics identified subpopulation (experiencing insomnia or not) as a significant moderator for effects on sleep (p = 0.0003) and depression (p = 0.0063), with larger effects in studies with participants experiencing insomnia. Comparison group type (active or passive) was also a significant moderator (p = 0.0474), with larger effects on sleep in studies using passive comparison groups. Study type, delivery format, and intervention duration were not identified as significant moderators. At follow-ups, small but significant effects were sustained for anxiety and depression. Protecting and promoting sleep amongst university students may help safeguard and advance mental health.

Abstract
Research suggests that psychological stress is associated with insomnia, but there is limited research on vulnerabilities that might amplify this association, particularly in college students. Based on a sample of 507 undergraduates, the current study demonstrates that the observed positive correlation between self-perceived stress and insomnia severity is moderated by the tendency to engage in repetitive negative thinking (RNT) at bedtime. Additionally, separate analyses of those who scored below/above the threshold for insomnia (non-insomniacs vs. insomniacs) revealed that the interaction between stress and these negative bedtime cognitions differed qualitatively between the two groups. In insomniacs, the stress-insomnia relationship was dampened for those with lower levels of bedtime RNT, but amplified for those with higher levels. For non-insomniacs, the stress-insomnia relationship was stronger for those with minimal bedtime RNT, while higher levels of bedtime RNT appeared to overshadow this association. To develop a better understanding of the contribution of stress and RNT to clinically relevant levels of insomnia, future studies should take into account the dissimilar patterns of moderation seen in non-insomniacs and insomniacs, either through prospective screening or separate analyses. Findings from the current study suggest that insomnia treatments that can simultaneously reduce stress and address bedtime RNT may be optimal.

Abstract
CITATION Sleep is a biological necessity, and insufficient sleep and untreated sleep disorders are detrimental for health, well-being, and public safety. Healthy People 2030 includes several sleep-related objectives with the goal to improve health, productivity, well-being, quality of life, and safety by helping people get enough sleep. In addition to adequate sleep duration, healthy sleep requires good quality, appropriate timing, regularity, and the absence of sleep disorders. It is the position of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) that sleep is essential to health. There is a significant need for greater emphasis on sleep health in education, clinical practice, inpatient and long-term care, public health promotion, and the workplace. More sleep and circadian research is needed to further elucidate the importance of sleep for public health and the contributions of insufficient sleep to health disparities. Abstract
Sleep difficulties are widespread among international students. Internet-based interventions are suggested as a low-threshold treatment option but may require cultural adaptation among culturally diverse populations. The present pilot study investigated the effectiveness and acceptance of an internet-based intervention to improve sleep difficulties in international students. A total of 81 international students of 36 nationalities were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 41) or waitlist control group (n = 40). The intervention group received immediate access to a culturally non-adapted unguided internet-based sleep intervention consisting of three modules based on sleep hygiene and cognitive techniques to reduce rumination. At baseline, 4 and 12 weeks after randomisation, insomnia severity, measured by the Insomnia Severity Index, and secondary outcomes (sleep quality, depression, anxiety, perceived stress, well-being, presenteeism, mental health literacy) were assessed. Data were analysed using linear multi-level analyses. Additionally, satisfaction and perceived cultural appropriateness of the intervention were evaluated by international students after 4 weeks, and compared with ratings of German students, who represent the original target group. Insomnia severity improved over time in the intervention group compared to the control group, revealing a significant estimated mean difference of -5.60 (Hedges' g = 0.84, p < 0.001) after 12 weeks. Satisfaction and perceived cultural appropriateness was high and comparable to that of German students. The present study shows that a culturally non-adapted internet-based sleep intervention can be a low-threshold treatment option to help meet the high demand for mental healthcare among international students. It thus indicates that cultural adaptation might not represent a precondition for providing effective internet-based sleep interventions to this target group.
