Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited understanding of how temporomandibular disorder (TMD) symptoms, psychological distress, and well-being are related to each other and to OHRQoL in Chinese young adults. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify correlations between TMD symptom severity, psychological status, and OHRQoL while also examining factors associated with low OHRQoL. METHODS Participants, recruited from a major university in the capital city, completed a survey that included demographics, the Chinese versions of the expanded five TMD symptoms (5Ts) screener, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), Ryff's Scales of Psychological Well-being-18 (SPWB-18), and Oral Health Impact Profile for TMDs (OHIP-TMD). Data were analysed using Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney U tests, Spearman's correlation, and logistic regression (α = 0.05). RESULTS The study sample consisted of 414 individuals (mean age 22.0 years [SD 2.1], 77.8% female). Among them, 23.4%, 22.2%, 15.7%, and 38.6% had no (NT), intra-articular (IT), pain-related (PT), and combined (CT) TMD symptoms, respectively. Significant differences were observed in global TMD severity (CT>IT, PT>NT), global distress (CT>IT, NT), and OHRQoL (CT>IT, PT, NT), but not global well-being. Global TMD severity was significantly, albeit weakly, correlated with global distress (rs = 0.32) and global well-being (rs = -0.12). Global distress, in turn, showed a significant but weak negative association with global well-being (rs = -0.34). Both global TMD severity and global distress exhibited moderate correlations with global OHIP (rs = 0.63/0.42). CONCLUSIONS Global TMD severity, incorporating symptom duration, frequency, intensity, and interference, was the main determinant of low OHRQoL in Chinese young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) in early adolescence have predominantly featured Western samples, with a focus on mental ill-being. OBJECTIVES This pioneering study investigated the relationships between TMD pain, somatic symptoms, and both mental well-being and ill-being. It also examined mind-body correlates in Asian young adolescents. METHODS Participants, aged 14, were enrolled in a public school. They completed a survey that included socio-demographics, the TMD Pain Screener, Patient Health Questionnaire-15, Life Goals Questionnaire, Meaning in Life Questionnaire, Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale, Satisfaction With Life Scale, and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales-21. Data were analysed using chi-square/Mann-Whitney U tests and Spearman's correlation (α = 0.05). RESULTS Among the 142 participants (52.8% female), 12.0% presented with TMD pain and 35.2% experienced medium-to-high somatic symptoms. Individuals with TMD pain and moderate-to-high somatic symptoms had significantly higher scores for somatic symptom burden/TMD pain, depression, anxiety and stress, while having substantially lower scores for the presence of life meaning and life satisfaction, compared to those without TMD pain and none/minimal-to-low somatic symptoms. Moderate correlations were observed between TMD pain and somatic symptoms (rs = 0.40), as well as between somatic symptoms and depression, anxiety and stress (rs = 0.51 to 0.57). Life satisfaction was negatively correlated with emotional distress (rs = -0.43 to -0.61). CONCLUSIONS TMD pain was associated with somatic symptoms but not with emotional distress. The moderate relationships between somatic symptoms and depression, anxiety and stress highlight the concept of somatisation in Asian cultures, even during early adolescence.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may be an 'idiom' of psychological distress in Confucian heritage cultures (CHCs). OBJECTIVES This systematic review/meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of TMDs in CHCs and compared the differences in TMD occurrence between time periods and age groups. Additionally, the associated biopsychosocial risk factors were also examined. METHODS The study protocol was developed a priori following the PRISMA guidelines and Joanna Briggs Institute systematic review methodology (CRD42021245526). Electronic searches of seven databases were conducted from January 2002 to Dec 2021. Reference lists of identified studies were hand-searched for additional articles. Study selection, quality assessment, and data extraction were done. Meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS Forty-eight articles were included in the systematic review. Overall prevalences were: TMDs-15% (95% CI: 15-16%); TMD pain-8% (95% CI: 7-9%); TMJ sounds-24% (95% CI: 21-27%); and TMJ locking-7% (95% CI: 1-13%). While TMD prevalence appeared to have declined from 2002 to 2011 to 2012-2021, the occurrence of TMD pain, TMJ sounds, and locking increased marginally or remained constant. TMD prevalence in children/adolescents was 18% (95% CI: 14-22%) and 17% (95% CI: 16-18%) among adults. Significant associations between TMDs and bruxism/psychological distress/education levels were specified by 73%/90%/88% of the relevant studies. CONCLUSIONS TMDs are prevalent in CHCs and a slight increase in TMD pain (2%) and TMJ sounds (8%) were discerned over the past two decades. TMDs are related to a myriad of biopsychosocial variables, particularly psychological distress, and these factors must be addressed within the cultural context of patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have a relatively high prevalence among university students. This study aimed to identify independent risk factors for TMD in university students and develop an effective risk prediction model. METHODS This study included 1,122 university students from four universities in Changchun City, Jilin Province, as subjects. Predictive factors were screened by using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and the machine learning Boruta algorithm in the training cohort. A multifactorial logistic regression analysis was used to construct a TMD risk prediction model. Internal validation of the model was conducted via bootstrap resampling, and an external validation cohort comprised 205 university students undergoing oral examinations at the Stomatological Hospital of Jilin University. RESULTS The prevalence of TMD among university students was 44.30%. Ten predictive factors were included in the model, comprising gender, facial cold stimulation, unilateral chewing, biting hard or resilient foods, clenching teeth, grinding teeth, excessive mouth opening, malocclusion, stress, and anxiety. The model demonstrated good predictive ability with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of 0.853, 0.838, and 0.821 in the training cohort, internal validation cohort, and external validation cohort, respectively. The calibration curves demonstrated that the predicted results were consistent with the actual results, and the decision curve analysis (DCA) indicated the model's high clinical utility. CONCLUSIONS An online nomogram of TMD in university students with good predictive performance was constructed, which can effectively predict the risk of TMD in university students. The model provides a useful tool for the early identification and treatment of TMDs in university students, helping clinicians to predict the probability of TMDs in each patient, thus providing more personalized and accurate treatment decisions for patients.

Abstract
It is commonly accepted that exposure to stress may cause overactivity in the orofacial muscles, leading to consistent muscle pain, which is the main symptom of temporomandibular disorders. The central neural mechanism underlying this process, however, remains unclear. The locus coeruleus is considered to play an important role in stress-related behavioral changes. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the role of locus coeruleus neurons in masseter overactivity induced by stress. C57BL/6 mice were subjected to chronic restraint stress for 14 days to establish an animal model. The behavioral changes and the electromyography of the masseter muscle in mice were measured. The expression of Fos in locus coeruleus was observed by immunofluorescence staining to assess neuronal activation. A chemogenetic test was used to inhibit locus coeruleus neuronal activity, and the behavioral changes and electromyography of the masseter muscle were observed again. The results exhibited that chronic restraint stress could induce anxiety-like behavior, overactivity of the masseter muscle, and significant activation of locus coeruleus neurons in mice. Furthermore, inhibition of noradrenergic neuron activity within the locus coeruleus could alleviate stress-induced anxiety behavior and masseter muscle overactivity. Activation of noradrenergic neurons in locus coeruleus induced by stress may be one of the central regulatory mechanisms for stress-induced anxiety-like behaviors and overactivity of masseter muscles.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The associations of Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) pain with somatic symptoms, mental ill-being/distress, and well-being were explored, along with the mental correlates of TMD (TS) and somatic symptom (SS) burden in older adolescents-young adults. METHODS TMD/somatic symptoms were appraised with the five quintessential symptoms (5Ts) of the DC/TMD/Somatic Symptom Scale-8, whereas mental distress/well-being was assessed with the Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales-21/Scales of Psychological Well-being-18. Data were examined using Chi-square/non-parametric tests and multivariate analyses (α = .05). RESULTS Among the 366 participants, 51.4%, 28.1%, 6.8%, and 13.7% had no TMD (NT), TMD pain (TP), TMD dysfunction (TD), and combined TMD (CT) respectively. Though mental distress varied substantially (CT, TP>NT, TD), no significant differences in well-being were discerned. SS burden, but not TS burden, was moderately correlated to distress. CONCLUSIONS The prospect of TMD pain was increased by being female, depressed, and anxious but reduced by "positive relations with others" and "self-acceptance".

Abstract
In recent decades, the focus of health research has shifted to the impact of disease or impairment on how people proceed, behave, and experience quality of life. People's lives are affected by oral diseases in various ways. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is inextricably linked to general health and well-being, and it has far-reaching consequences for clinical practice and dentistry research. Particularly in Indonesia, increasing attention to OHRQoL is related to several concerning oral conditions, such as the extremely high number of cases of tooth decay and inflammation of dental supportive tissue that inexplicably lowers the population's OHRQoL. To date, there has yet to be a bibliometric study of OHRQoL research in Indonesia. We intend to map the existing scientific literature on OHRQoL research in Indonesia during the last five years and investigate its research gaps. Scopus and the Sinta Database (a national database through Google Scholar) were used to retrieve Indonesian OHRQoL research publications from 2018 to 2023. Bibliographic data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25.0 and VOS Viewer 1.6.19. The data demonstrate that the number of OHRQoL-related publications in Indonesia and the number of local writers have increased over time. More of these publications were published in prestigious national journals than foreign ones. The study found that local researchers tended to conduct OHRQoL research on children and older populations, raising the issue of tooth decay or tooth loss. Exploring other subjects, such as dental anxiety, patient satisfaction, chewing performance, aesthetics, and appearance, and other populations (people with oral cancer and other systemic conditions) could broaden the environment of OHRQoL research in Indonesia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Literature concerning Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and the Covid-19 pandemic is limited and disparate findings related to TMD frequencies, psychological distress, and quality of life were presented. This study investigated the prevalence of painful Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and compared the psychological, sleep, and oral health-related quality of life profiles of patients seeking TMD care before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS Data were accrued from consecutive adult patients 12 months before (BC; control) and during (DC; case group) the Covid-19 pandemic. The Diagnostic Criteria for TMDs (DC/TMD), Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scales (DASS)-21, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-TMDs were utilized and statistical analysis was performed using Chi-square/non-parametric tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS The prevalence of painful TMDs was 50.8% before and 46.3% during the pandemic. Significant differences in PSQI and OHIP component scores were discerned between the BC and DC groups contingent on TMD pain. Total-DASS was moderately correlated to total-PSQI/OHIP (rs = 0.41-0.63). CONCLUSION The covid-19 pandemic did not appear to exacerbate psychological distress but affected sleep and increased unease over TMD dysfunction.
