Consumer versus resource control and the importance of habitat heterogeneity for estuarine bivalves

A global synthesis of predation on bivalves

Predation is a dominant structuring force in ecological communities. In aquatic environments, predation on bivalves has long been an important focal interaction for ecological study because bivalves have central roles as ecosystem engineers, basal components of food webs, and commercial commodities. Studies of bivalves are common, not only because of bivalves' central roles, but also due to the relative ease of studying predatory effects on this taxonomic group. To understand patterns in the interactions of bivalves and their predators we synthesised data from 52 years of peer-reviewed studies on bivalve predation. Using a systematic search, we compiled 1334 studies from 75 countries, comprising 61 bivalve families (N = 2259), dominated by Mytilidae (29% of bivalves), Veneridae (14%), Ostreidae (8%), Unionidae (7%), and Dreissenidae and Tellinidae (6% each). A total of 2036 predators were studied, with crustaceans the most studied predator group (34% of predators), followed by fishes (24%), molluscs (17%), echinoderms (10%) and birds (6%). The majority of studies (86%) were conducted in marine systems, in part driven by the high commercial value of marine bivalves. Studies in freshwater ecosystems were dominated by non-native bivalves and non-native predator species, which probably reflects the important role of biological invasions affecting freshwater biodiversity. In fact, while 81% of the studied marine bivalve species were native, only 50% of the freshwater species were native to the system. In terms of approach, most studies used predation trials, visual analysis of digested contents and exclusion experiments to assess the effects of predation. These studies reflect that many factors influence bivalve predation depending on the species studied, including (i) species traits (e.g. behaviour, morphology, defence mechanisms), (ii) other biotic interactions (e.g. presence of competitors, parasites or diseases), and (iii) environmental context (e.g. temperature, current velocity, beach exposure, habitat complexity). There is a lack of research on the effects of bivalve predation at the population and community and ecosystem levels (only 7% and 0.5% of studies respectively examined impacts at these levels). At the population level, the available studies demonstrate that predation can decrease bivalve density through consumption or the reduction of recruitment. At the community and ecosystem level, predation can trigger effects that cascade through trophic levels or effects that alter the ecological functions bivalves perform. Given the conservation and commercial importance of many bivalve species, studies of predation should be pursued in the context of global change, particularly climate change, acidification and biological invasions.

Blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) population structure in southern New England tidal rivers: Patterns of shallow-water, unvegetated habitat use and quality

The blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, has a broad geographic distribution encompassing coastal waters of the eastern United States and Gulf of Mexico, but intraspecific patterns of habitat use and quality are lacking at northern latitudes. This study examined the population structure of blue crabs in the Seekonk and Taunton Rivers (Rhode Island and Massachusetts, USA): two tidally influenced rivers contiguous with the Narragansett Bay Estuary and dominated by shallow-water, unvegetated habitats. Crabs were collected fortnightly from May through August (2012-2016), and abundance- and growth-based metrics were used to assess riverine habitat use and quality. These metrics were also analyzed with respect to crab life history traits and in situ abiotic conditions to elucidate patterns of habitat selection throughout ontogeny. Crabs measuring 8 to 185 mm carapace width (CW; n = 2,577) were collected, and two distinct age-classes occupied the rivers during the spring and summer (maximum abundance ~ 5 crabs/10 m²). The younger age-0+ cohort was numerically dominant (~ 88% of total catch) and comprised of male and juvenile female crabs (mean ± SD abundance = 0.28 ± 0.26 males/10 m² and 0.14 ± 0.12 juvenile females/10 m²). Males accounted for the majority of age-1+ crabs (~ 83% of cohort), yet sexually mature females were also observed (9% of cohort; mean ± SD abundance = 0.04 ± 0.06 adult females/100 m²; size at 50% maturity ± 95 CI = 129.0 ± 0.2 mm CW). Crabs were spatially segregated along a salinity gradient with males and juvenile females prevalent in oligohaline waters (upper river salinity ~ 5 ppt) and adult females mainly concentrating in higher salinity areas (mid- and lower river salinity ~ 11-21 ppt). Seasonal and interannual patterns in crab abundance also differed by sex and ontogeny. Peak catches of males and juvenile females occurred during the spring and mid-summer, and annual abundances were positively related to dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. In contrast, mature females were most abundant during August and years with elevated water temperatures. The absolute and relative growth rates of juvenile crabs equaled 0.9 ± 0.3 mm CW/day and 1.5 ± 0.6 % CW/day, respectively, and were directly related to DO levels. A synoptic examination of crab abundance and growth across a broad geographic range indicated that shallow-water, unvegetated habitats presently serve as functional nurseries in southern New England tidal rivers.

Predator-prey interactions in a ladybeetle-aphid system depend on spatial scale

The outcome of species interactions may manifest differently at different spatial scales; therefore, our interpretation of observed interactions will depend on the scale at which observations are made. For example, in ladybeetle-aphid systems, the results from small-scale cage experiments usually cannot be extrapolated to landscape-scale field observations. To understand how ladybeetle-aphid interactions change across spatial scales, we evaluated predator-prey interactions in an experimental system. The experimental habitat consisted of 81 potted plants and was manipulated to facilitate analysis across four spatial scales. We also simulated a spatially explicit metacommunity model parallel to the experiment. In the experiment, we found that the negative effect of ladybeetles on aphids decreased with increasing spatial scales. This pattern can be explained by ladybeetles strongly suppressing aphids at small scales, but not colonizing distant patches fast enough to suppress aphids at larger scales. In the experiment, the positive effects of aphids on ladybeetles were strongest at three-plant scale. In a model scenario where predators did not have demographic dynamics, we found, consistent with the experiment, that both the effects of ladybeetles on aphids and the effects of aphids on ladybeetles decreased with increasing spatial scales. These patterns suggest that dispersal was the primary cause of ladybeetle population dynamics in our experiment: aphids increased ladybeetle numbers at smaller scales because ladybeetles stayed in a patch longer and performed area-restricted searches after encountering aphids; these behaviors did not affect ladybeetle numbers at larger spatial scales. The parallel experimental and model results illustrate how predator-prey interactions can change across spatial scales, suggesting that our interpretation of observed predator-prey dynamics would differ if observations were made at different scales. This study demonstrates how studying ecological interactions at a range of scales can help link the results of small-scale ecological experiments to landscape-scale ecological problems.
