Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between genetic polymorphisms in SOD2 and SOD3 and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Material and methods: The cohort study included 109 participants, all of whom underwent root canal treatment on a single-rooted maxillary or mandibular tooth with asymptomatic periapical periodontitis. The OHRQoL was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 at three intervals: prior to root canal treatment (T0), 7 (T7), and 30 (T30) days post-treatment. Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal cells for genotyping of polymorphisms in SOD2 (rs5746136, rs4880, and rs10370) and SOD3 (rs2855262 and rs13306703) using real-time PCR. Both Univariate and Multivariate Poisson Regression analyses were conducted, with p < 0.05 indicating statistical significance. Results: The rs2855262 polymorphism in the SOD3 gene showed a significant difference in the functional limitation domain in both codominant (p = 0.037) and recessive (p = 0.040) models. The rs13306703 polymorphism in SOD3 demonstrated a significant difference in physical pain [in codominant (p = 0.001) and recessive (p < 0.001) models], psychological discomfort [in codominant (p = 0.002) and recessive (p = 0.002) models], handicap [in codominant (p = 0.011) and dominant (p = 0.015) models], and total score [in codominant (p = 0.011) and recessive (p = 0.007) models]. In the Multivariate Poisson Regression analysis, SOD2 (rs5746136) was associated with the psychological disability domain [in codominant (p = 0.049) and recessive (p = 0.040) models] and SOD3 (rs13306703), in the handicap domain [in codominant (p = 0.028) and dominant (p = 0.037) models]. Conclusions: Genetic polymorphisms in SOD2 and SOD3 genes can influence the OHRQoL response in patients with asymptomatic periapical periodontitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multiple studies have demonstrated the association between Quality of Life (QoL) and the prevalence of caries, periodontitis, and tooth loss. However, the role of the position and location of tooth loss in impacting QoL remains unclear. AIM To evaluate the association of tooth loss, including anterior losses, with Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) in Chileans aged 15 years and older who participated in the ENS 2016-2017. METHODS In this cross-sectional study we included 5473 individuals enrolled in the last Chilean National Health Survey (ENS 2016-2017). HRQoL was measured using the EQ-5D questionnaire, while OHRQoL was assessed through a general question (GQ/ENS) and five specific questions (SQ/ENS). An analysis of variance test was performed to determine how difference or variation in the number(s) of teeth affected their HRQoL. Odds ratios with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were calculated using multinomial logistic regression to determine how and to what degree anterior tooth loss was associated both with HRQOL and OHRQOL in the study sample. RESULTS The number of remaining teeth was significantly higher in the 'No problems' group across all EQ-5D dimensions, except Anxiety/Depression. The largest difference was in Self-care, where 'No problems' had a mean of 20.18 compared to 6.43 teeth in the 'Problematic' group. Anxiety/Depression showed higher odds of 'Some problems' with upper anterior tooth loss, while 'Usual Activities' showed higher odds of 'problematic' with lower anterior tooth loss. Participants with an 'Excellent' OHRQoL perception had a mean of 24.32 teeth. Also, upper and lower anterior tooth loss increased the odds of OHRQoL self-perception. CONCLUSIONS Tooth loss was associated with lower HRQoL and OHRQoL in some groups, with more remaining teeth associated with better outcomes, while anterior tooth loss was- linked to worse self-perceived oral health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare the clinical response to periodontal treatment in localized and generalized gingivitis using periodontal variables and patient-reported outcomes (PROs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty participants (30 with localized gingivitis, 30 with generalized gingivitis) underwent scaling, polishing, and oral hygiene instruction at baseline and monthly follow-ups until periodontal health was restored. Periodontal variables (bleeding on probing [BOP], gingival index [GI], and plaque index [PLI]) along with PROs on oral hygiene practices and the Self-Efficacy Scale for Self-Care (SESS) were assessed. RESULTS At 1-month follow-up, generalized gingivitis showed significantly greater improvements in BOP (p < 0.001) and GI (p < 0.001) versus localized gingivitis, with no intergroup difference in PLI reduction (p = 0.747). Periodontal health was achieved in 80% of localized cases versus 30% of generalized cases after single-session therapy (p < 0.001), with 70% of generalized cases requiring multiple re-treatments. Unresolved generalized cases had higher baseline BOP (p = 0.014) but similar baseline PLI (p = 0.322) and no significant differences in treatment-induced BOP (p = 0.137) or PLI changes (p = 0.563). SESS scores improved significantly in both groups, with greater SE-D score improvement in localized cases. Localized gingivitis had higher baseline prolonged brushing rates (> 2 min: 66.7% vs. 33.3%), but post-intervention oral hygiene did not differ between groups. CONCLUSIONS Localized gingivitis responded well to single-session therapy, whereas generalized gingivitis required multiple treatments due to higher baseline inflammation, emphasizing the need for distinct clinical strategies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study supports subtype-specific management in gingivitis, advocating single-session therapy for localized cases and staged interventions for generalized cases to optimize outcomes and reduce overtreatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontitis is the major cause of tooth loss in adults and one of the most common non-communicable diseases. Clinically, periodontitis impairs oral health and associated with various systemic diseases. Maintaining a healthy diet is considered risk reduction of periodontitis. To explore the causal effect between dietary data and periodontitis by Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. METHODS A total of 11,704 participants and 21 dietary variables from the NHANES were in random forest to rank the importance in predicting periodontitis. Data were from the genome wide association studies (GWASs) database to estimate causal relationships between diet data and periodontitis. Two-sample MR analyses were conducted by using the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method. RESULTS The MR showed alcohol consumption and sugars intake increased the risk of chronic periodontitis with odds ratio (OR) 2.768 (95% CI: 1.03e + 00-7.42e + 00) and 2.123 (95% CI: 1.06e + 00-4.26e + 00) respectively. Vitamins and minerals, including folic acid and folate, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin C, calcium, vitamin D and zinc, were not causally associated with chronic periodontitis. Alcohol consumption greater than 2.5 drinks per day and sugar intake more than 4.88 g increased the risk of periodontitis, with a calculated relative risk of 1.33 and 1.61, respectively. CONCLUSION It is suggested to drink alcohol less than 2.5 drinks/day and consume sugar less than 4.88 g/day to avoid alcohol and sugar consumption promoting the development of periodontitis. Establishing a dietary pattern conducive to periodontal health may be the focus of further clinical research.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the association between periodontitis and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in adults, and to compare OHRQoL across different severities of the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Searches were conducted in five electronic databases up to December 2023. Observational studies that provided a clear definition of periodontitis and used validated measures of OHRQoL were included. Meta-analyses were performed both overall and based on factors that could explain heterogeneity between studies. RESULTS Sixty studies comprising 14,851 individuals were included in the review. Meta-analyses showed that periodontitis was associated with impaired OHRQoL: any OHRQoL instruments (n = 33 studies; SMD: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.53-0.93), solely using the OHIP-14 (n = 26 studies; MD: 5.14, 95% CI: 3.64-6.64), and risk assessment (n = 9 studies; adjusted RR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.12-1.78). Stages III-IV periodontitis had a greater impact than Stages I-II periodontitis. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses indicated smaller effect size estimates for individuals with comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS Periodontitis negatively impacts OHRQoL, with a positive score-response relationship found between periodontitis severity and poorer OHRQoL. However, the magnitude of this association appears to be diminished in individuals with comorbidities.

Abstract
This meta-analysis aimed to assess the impact of identity-building interventions on recovery identity and patient-reported health outcomes in chronic disease patients. We identified 15 relevant empirical studies (comprising 2261 patients) from 989 records through extensive keyword searches and manual screening conducted between March 2nd and March 13th, 2023. Utilizing the Cochrane tool, meta-regression, and the GRADE approach, we evaluated these studies for their characteristics, findings, and quality. The analysis revealed that identity-building interventions, encompassing recovery-oriented group, interest group, and linguistic approaches, positively influenced identity synthesis and had varying effects on health outcomes. Notably, multiple regression analysis demonstrated that identity synthesis significantly predicted health outcomes. However, the study identified mild heterogeneity, a high attrition bias risk, and insufficient data on selection and detection bias as limitations. Overall, identity-building interventions proved influential in enhancing recovery identity, a vital predictor of patient-reported health outcomes in chronic disease patients.

Abstract
Reminiscence therapy (RT) is an effective psychological intervention to address mental disorders in the elderly; however, it is insufficiently appraised in elderly postoperative cervical cancer patients complicated with anxiety or depression. Hence, this study aimed to explore the effect of RT-engaged care (RTEC) on this population. Totally, 112 elderly postoperative cervical cancer patients with anxiety or depression were enrolled in this single-center, randomized, controlled study, and randomized into RTEC group (N = 56) or usual care group (N = 56) for a 12-week intervention. Evaluations were performed at baseline and the 4 th week (W4), 8th week (W8), and 12th week (W12) after intervention initiation.Hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS)-anxiety score at W12 (P = 0.028) as well as HADS-depression score at W8 (P = 0.028) and W12 (P = 0.017) were reduced in RTEC group compared to usual care group. However, the mini-mental state examination score at W4, W8, and W12 was not different between the two groups (all P > 0.050). Concerning quality of life (QoL), EuroQol 5-dimensions score at W12 was reduced in RTEC group than in usual care group (P = 0.010). Both quality of life questionnaire Core 30 (QLQ-C30) global-health-status score and QLQ-C30 function score at W8 and W12 were elevated in RTEC group compared to usual care group (all P < 0.050). Whereas no difference was seen in QLQ-C30 symptom score at these timepoints between the two groups (all P > 0.050). In conclusion, RTEC alleviates psychological burden and improves QoL in elderly postoperative cervical cancer patients with anxiety or depression, while the effect in enhancing cognitive function is not obvious.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the association between breakfast skipping and periodontitis and the mediating role of sugar and lipid metabolism and systemic inflammation in this association using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2016-2018. METHODS This study included 11,953 participants, representing an estimated 33.9 million people. Complex sample logistic regression was used to assess the independent association between breakfast skipping and periodontitis. Subgroup analysis was conducted with modifiers including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), urban residence, education level, marital status, and diabetes. Structural equation modeling assessed potential mediation by biomarkers related to glucose and lipid metabolism along with systemic inflammation. RESULTS The fully adjusted logistic regression model indicated a positive association between breakfast skipping and periodontitis (odds ratio [OR] = 1.234 (1.026-1.483), p = 0.025). This association was highlighted in middle-aged (40-60 years), female, highly educated, married individuals with BMI < 25 kg/m2, and those in urban areas without diabetes. Blood glucose (β ± SE = 0.006 ± 0.002, p = 0.014), triglycerides (β ± SE = 0.004 ± 0.002, p = 0.033), and white blood cell count (β ± SE = 0.011 ± 0.003, p = 0.003) were identified as partial mediators. CONCLUSIONS A new, independent association between breakfast skipping, and periodontitis has been discovered, which is partially mediated by sugar and lipid metabolism, and systemic inflammation. The findings provide new insights into the benefits of chrononutrition for periodontal health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the adjunctive use of the probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019 (B. lactis HN019) to conventional therapy on clinical and microbiological parameters in patients with generalized gingivitis. METHODS Sixty systemically healthy individuals with untreated generalized gingivitis were submitted to periodontal therapy and allocated to receive Placebo (n = 30) or Probiotic (n = 30) lozenges, twice a day for 8 weeks. Bleeding on Marginal Probing (BOMP) was evaluated at baseline, after 2 and 8 weeks. Supra and subgingival biofilm were obtained at baseline and 8 weeks post-therapy for analyses by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Differences between therapeutic groups were analyzed by non-parametric tests (p<0.05). RESULTS The Placebo and Probiotic groups showed a significant reduction in BOMP at 8 weeks compared to baseline (p<0.05). The Probiotic group had a lower percentage of BOMP when compared with the Placebo group at 8 weeks (p<0.0001). Alpha and beta-diversity showed no statistical significance between groups and time points. At phylum level, no significant differences were observed between groups and time points. At genus level, an increase in the relative abundances of Bergeyella and Corynebacterium were significantly associated with a greater reduction in bleeding in the Placebo group and with less reduction in bleeding in the Probiotic group, respectively. At species level, Schaalia spp., Streptococcus gordonii, and Leptotrichia wadei increased in Placebo and decreased in the Probiotic group after treatment. Granulicatella adiacens decreased significantly after the probiotic therapy, while Saccharibacteria (TM7) spp., Solobacterium moorei, and Catonella morbi increased significantly. In the Placebo group, Bergeyella sp. HMT-322 was associated with a greater percentage of reduction in bleeding. In both groups, Actinomyces species were related to less reduction in bleeding. CONCLUSION The adjuvant use of B. lactis HN019 alongside conventional therapy enhanced the reduction in BOMP and promoted greater changes in the microbiological profile of patients with generalized gingivitis. Abstract
Objective: This case-control study aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of salivary interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-10, and IL-1β/IL-10 ratio to discriminate periodontitis from periodontal health and stable from unstable periodontitis. Methods: Saliva samples were collected from 135 (healthy on an intact periodontium = 45 [as healthy control], stable periodontitis = 39, and unstable periodontitis = 51) participants, and then clinical periodontal parameters were recorded. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine salivary levels of IL-1β and IL-10. Area under the curves (AUCs), sensitivity, and specificity of IL-1β, IL-10, and IL-1β/IL-10 were estimated to discriminate between groups. Result: The level of salivary IL-1β was significantly higher in unstable periodontitis than in stable periodontitis and healthy control groups (426 ± 59, 247 ± 55, and 204 ± 36 pg/ml [picograms per milliliter], respectively). While the level of salivary IL-10 was significantly higher in the control group (360.7 ± 80.5 pg/ml) than unstable periodontitis group (146.92 ± 1.8 pg/ml), no significant difference was found between the control and stable periodontitis (317.04 ± 59.8 pg/ml) groups. IL-1β, IL-10, and IL-1β/IL-10 had significant diagnostic accuracy for differentiating healthy control from unstable periodontitis (AUCs = 0.99, 0.96, and 1; sensitivity = 0.98,1, and 1; specificity = 0.95, 0.95, and 1, respectively). Similarly, they showed significant diagnostic accuracy in distinguishing unstable from stable periodontitis (AUCs = 0.98, 0.99, and 1; sensitivity = 0.94, 1, and 1; specificity = 0.94, 0.97, and 1, respectively). Conclusion: Salivary IL-1β, IL-10, and IL-1β/IL-10 have a high potential to discriminate healthy control from periodontitis and stable from unstable periodontitis. Abstract
For decades, periodontitis has been considered to be a local inflammatory disease of the periodontal tissues in the oral cavity. Initially, associations of periodontitis with a multitude of noncommunicable diseases were each studied separately, and relationships were shown. The associations of periodontitis with morbidities, such as cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, respiratory diseases, have been demonstrated. As most such studies were cross-sectional in nature, questions about causality cannot be univocally answered. And periodontitis as an independent risk factor for one systemic disease, becomes even more difficult to assess since recently periodontitis has also been associated with multimorbidity. Periodontitis and many systemic diseases share environmental, lifestyle and genetic risk factors, and share immunopathology. Moreover, suffering from one common noncommunicable disease may increase the susceptibility for another such chronic disease; the systemic effects of one condition may be one of various risk factors for another such disease. The overarching effect of any systemic disease is it causing a pro-inflammatory state in the individual; this has also been shown for periodontitis. Moreover, in periodontitis a prothrombotic state and elevated immunological activity have been shown. As such, when we consider periodontal disease as another systemic disease, it can affect the susceptibility and progression of other systemic diseases, and importantly, vice versa. And with this, it is not surprising that periodontitis is associated with a variety of other noncommunicable diseases. The medical definition of a systemic disease includes diseases that affect different organs and systems. Thus, the aim of this opinion paper is to propose that periodontitis should be considered a systemic disease in its own right and that it affects the individual's systemic condition and wellbeing. The dental and medical profession and researchers alike, should adapt this paradigm shift, advancing periodontal disease out of its isolated anatomical location into the total of chronic noncommunicable diseases, being for some conditions a comorbid disease and, vice versa, comorbidities can affect initiation and progression of periodontal disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to translate and validate the condition-specific Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) in the Croatian cultural context and assess the impact of periodontal diseases and nonsurgical periodontal therapy on quality of life (QoL). MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out on 150 individuals: 50 periodontally healthy, 50 with gingivitis, and 50 with periodontitis who self-administrated the OHIP. The participants' age ranged between 18 and 71 years, with the median age of 45 (34-57) years. Forty-seven percent of the participants were females. The validity and reliability of the Croatian OHIP version were tested. The impact of gingivitis and periodontitis on QoL was assessed. Changes in QoL induced by nonsurgical periodontal therapy in 20 patients with periodontitis were analyzed. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Categorical data were presented by absolute and relative frequencies. The normality of the distribution of continuous variables was tested by the Shapiro-Wilk test. Continuous data were described by the median and the limits of the interquartile range (IQR). Differences in continuous variables between two independent groups were tested with the Mann-Whitney U test, and between three groups with the Kruskal-Wallis test (post hoc Conover). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to examine the differences in the total score before and after therapy. All p values were two-sided. The level of significance was set at alpha of 0.05. RESULTS The analysis detected a single-factor structure that explained for the 56.9% of the variance. Cronbach's alpha value was 0.937, which indicated an excellent internal consistency. Overall OHIP score reported a strong correlation with the subjective estimate of periodontal problems (Rho = 0.92; p < 0.001). Test-retest reliability was high (r = 0.984; p < 0.001). The periodontitis group had the highest OHIP score (28 [23-34]), followed by the gingivitis group (14 [12-20]) and the periodontally healthy group (9 [5-11]; p < 0.001). Nonsurgical periodontal therapy significantly improved the QoL in those with periodontitis (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The condition-specific Croatian version of the OHIP instrument can be considered adequate to measure the impact of periodontal diseases on oral health-related QoL. Periodontal diseases, especially periodontitis, have a negative effect on the patient's QoL. Nonsurgical periodontal treatment can improve patients' QoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have indicated the association between poor oral health and depression in adults. This study evaluated oral and social functions contribution to the association between tooth loss and depressive symptoms in Chilean individuals. METHODS We used data from the Chilean National Health Survey. The number of remaining teeth (≤19 versus ≥20 teeth) and anterior tooth losses were the exposure variables. Outcome was depression, measured through a self-report question and with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI SF). Mediating variables were determined by five questions, including problems regarding "speaking", "pain and suffering", "eating", "daily activities", and "social relationships". We performed logistic regression models adjusted by multiple confounders variables. Finally, we calculated indirect, direct effect, total effect, and the proportion mediated (PM). RESULTS We included 5383 participants. The self-reported depression and suspected depression prevalence were 22,1 % and 14,0 % respectively. The total effect of fewer remaining teeth (≤19) on self-reported depression was 1.21 (95 % CI 1.02-1.44), and 1.09 (95 % CI 0.90-1.33) for suspected depression. All five variables of oral and social functions significantly mediated the association between tooth loss and depression. Feeling uncomfortable when speaking or eating discomfort were the most significant mediators. LIMITATIONS The mediation analysis should be interpreted with caution due to the cross-sectional design. CONCLUSIONS Deterioration of oral and social functions was a significant mediator in the association between tooth loss and depression, in particular feeling uncomfortable when speaking or eating. This mechanism should be considered in interventions to improve mental health.

Periodontal and peri-implant diseases result from a chronic inflammatory response to dysbiotic microbial communities and are characterized by inflammation in the soft tissue and the ensuing progressive destruction of supporting bone, resulting in tooth or implant loss. These diseases' high prevalence, multifactorial etiology, extensive treatment costs, and significant detriment to patients' quality-of-life underscore their status as a critical public health burden. This review delineates the economic and sociocultural ramifications of periodontal and peri-implant diseases on patient welfare and healthcare economics. We delve into the implications of diagnosis, treatment, supportive care, and managing destructive tissue consequences, contrasting these aspects with healthy patients.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the cross-sectional association between severe periodontitis and diabetes mellitus (DM), in a representative sample of Spanish population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The di@bet.es epidemiological study is a population-based cohort study aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence of DM in the adult population of Spain. The at-risk sample at the final examination (2016-2017) included 1751 subjects who completed an oral health questionnaire. This questionnaire, together with demographic and risk factors, had been previously validated to build an algorithm to predict severe periodontitis in the Spanish population. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between severe periodontitis and DM with adjustment for confounding factors. RESULTS In total, 144 subjects developed DM, which yielded 8.2% cumulative incidence. Severe periodontitis was detected in 59.0%, 54.7% or 68.8% of the subjects depending on three different selected criteria at the 2016-2017 exam. All criteria used to define severe periodontitis were associated with DM in unadjusted analysis, but the magnitude of the association decreased after adjusting for significant confounders. The criteria '≥50% of teeth with clinical attachment loss ≥5 mm' presented an odds ratio of 4.9 (95% confidence interval: 2.2-10.7; p ≤ .001) for DM. CONCLUSIONS Severe periodontitis is associated with DM in the Spanish population.

Abstract
Masticatory performance is considered an important step in the beginning of the digestive process and considering the patient's aesthetic and functional factors, it is necessary to choose appropriate treatments. Based on the evidence during orthodontic treatment, the restoration of the physiological function of masticatory performance should not be neglected. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between orthodontic treatment and improved masticatory performance and oral health related to quality of life. In the present study, all articles published till the end of August 2023 were extracted by two trained researchers independently through a search in databases like PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, ISI, Web of Knowledge, Elsevier, Wiley, and Embase, and Google Scholar search engine using keywords and their combinations. Data analysis was done using the fixed effects model in a meta-analysis, by STATA (version 17); a P-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. Based on the results, the mean difference in masticatory performance between pre-treatment and post-treatment was 2.23 (MD: 2.23; 95CI, 2.17, 2.29. p<0.01; I2= 99.98%; p<0.01). The mean difference in oral health related to quality of life between pre-treatment and post-treatment was -32.23 (MD: -32.23; 95CI, -33.35, -31.11. p<0.01; I2= 97%; p<0.01). Orthodontic treatment had a positive effect on masticatory performance and improved the quality of life of patients after treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Well-being encompasses physical, mental, social, and cultural aspects. Sleep quality and pathologies are among the objective conditions jeopardising it. Chronic insomnia, inflammatory-based diseases, and mood disorders often occur in a single cluster, and inflammation can negatively impact sleep, potentially harming well-being. Some evidence from specific clinical populations suggests that also some resolved past diseases could still have an impact on present sleep quality and well-being. The aim of the present study is to investigate, in the general population, whether and to what degree well-being and insomnia are associated with resolved pathologies. METHODS A cross-sectional survey (IPSAD®) was carried out using anonymous postal questionnaires that investigated past and present general health, well-being, and insomnia. A total of 10,467 subjects answered the questionnaire. RESULTS Several classes of both current and resolved pathologies resulted in increased odds ratios for current insomnia (odds ratios = 1.90; 1.43, respectively) and impaired well-being (odds ratios = 1.75; 1.33, respectively), proportional to the number of the displayed pathologies. Notably, both current and resolved past psychiatric disorders were strongly associated with both current impaired well-being (odds ratios = 5.38; 1.70, respectively) and insomnia (odds ratios = 4.99; 2.15, respectively). CONCLUSIONS To explain these associations, we suggest that systemic inflammation conveyed by several medical conditions disrupts homeostatic processes, with final effects on sleep quality and behaviour.

Abstract
AIM To assess whether oral health problems affect disease-specific quality of life (QoL) of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients, and vice versa, whether IBD affects oral-health-related QoL. MATERIALS AND METHODS Individuals reporting IBD and matched controls were surveyed on general anamnestic information, oral-health-related questions and the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-5. IBD patients were additionally surveyed on years since diagnosis, disease activity and severity as well as health-related QoL (Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, sIBDQ). OHIP-5 and sIBDQ were defined as primary outcome parameters, and several predictors and confounders were used in adjusted univariable and multivariable regression analyses. RESULTS Answers from 1108 IBD patients and 3429 controls were analysed. Compared with controls, IBD patients reported significantly more frequently an oral impact on daily life and worse oral-health-related QoL, with Crohn's disease (CD) patients being more severely affected than ulcerative colitis (UC) patients. The diagnosis of UC and CD, having <20 teeth, severe periodontitis and stressful daily-life experience were associated with a higher prevalence of poor oral-health-related QoL. Among IBD patients, an impaired IBD-specific, health-related QoL was significantly associated with the diagnosis of CD and depression, IBD activity and severity, having <20 teeth, presence of oral lesions and stressful daily-life experience, while a longer time since diagnosis was significantly associated with an improved IBD-specific, health-related QoL. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study indicate, for the first time, that oral health problems are associated with an impairment of IBD-specific health-related QoL, and vice versa, IBD is associated with an impaired oral health-related QoL. This emphasizes the potential advantages of including dental professionals in the multi-disciplinary treatment teams of IBD patients.

Abstract
AIM To determine the accuracy of biomarker combinations in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva through meta-analysis to diagnose periodontitis in systemically healthy subjects. METHODS Studies on combining two or more biomarkers providing a binary classification table, sensitivity/specificity values or group sizes in subjects diagnosed with periodontitis were included. The search was performed in August 2022 through PUBMED, EMBASE, Cochrane, LILACS, SCOPUS and Web of Science. The methodological quality of the articles selected was evaluated using the QUADAS-2 checklist. Hierarchical summary receiver operating characteristic modelling was employed to perform the meta-analyses (CRD42020175021). RESULTS Twenty-one combinations in GCF and 47 in saliva were evaluated. Meta-analyses were possible for six salivary combinations (median sensitivity/specificity values): IL-6 with MMP-8 (86.2%/80.5%); IL-1β with IL-6 (83.0%/83.7%); IL-1β with MMP-8 (82.7%/80.8%); MIP-1α with MMP-8 (71.0%/75.6%); IL-1β, IL-6 and MMP-8 (81.8%/84.3%); and IL-1β, IL-6, MIP-1α and MMP-8 (76.6%/79.7%). CONCLUSIONS Two-biomarker combinations in oral fluids show high diagnostic accuracy for periodontitis, which is not substantially improved by incorporating more biomarkers. In saliva, the dual combinations of IL-1β, IL-6 and MMP-8 have an excellent ability to detect periodontitis and a good capacity to detect non-periodontitis. Because of the limited number of biomarker combinations evaluated, further research is required to corroborate these observations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to review halitosis research, discuss its various causes, and propose effective interventions based on the underlying etiologies and mechanisms. The main research question is to identify the primary factors contributing to halitosis and appropriate strategies to address them. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive literature review was conducted on halitosis and its associated causes, including oral pathological factors, oral microbial influences, microbial metabolic pathways, gastrointestinal diseases, and gut microbiota dysbiosis. RESULTS Unhealthy eating habits and an imbalance of microorganisms in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract were identified as primary causes of halitosis. Dental caries, periodontal disease, xerostomia, and digestive disorders like gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome were also found to be related to the development of halitosis. Due to poor oral hygiene or antibiotic use, disruption of microbial communities can result in dysbiosis, inflammation, and halitosis. CONCLUSIONS Halitosis is a multifactorial condition with various underlying causes, including oral and systemic diseases. Effective interventions should be tailored based on the specific etiologies and mechanisms involved. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Understanding the factors contributing to halitosis is crucial for developing appropriate treatment strategies. Enhancing oral hygiene habits, using antimicrobial drugs, or administering probiotics may help regulate oral or intestinal flora, thereby improving halitosis and overall oral health.

Abstract
(1) Background: The link between oral and systemic health is becoming increasingly obvious. Oral diseases, particularly periodontitis, have been linked to various diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, among others. This survey aimed to assess the oral health condition of individuals, considering both their overall health and periodontal status, by performing oral examinations and collecting data using questionnaires. (2) Methods: After obtaining approval from the University's Ethics Committee, the study was carried out from 2021 to 2022 at the Department of Oral Health, located in the Emergency Municipal Hospital in Timisoara, Timis County, Romania. Bivariate correlations were performed using nonparametric Spearman's Rho using SPPS software version 23. To assess the importance of smoking frequency related to the severity of periodontitis diagnosis, the ANOVA Simple test (one-way) and Hochberg GT2 post hoc analysis were utilized. The chi-squared test was employed for nominal variables. A significance level of 0.05 (alpha = 0.05) was adopted for all statistical tests. (3) Results: There is a significant positive association between the frequency of systemic disease and the severity of the periodontitis diagnosis taken as a total, Rho (242) = 0.151, p < 0.05, and taken as a stage, Rho (242) = 0.199, p < 0.01, thus as the severity of the diagnosis increases, the patient presents comorbidities. Hochberg GT2 post hoc analysis indicates that the non-smoking group has statistically significantly lower diagnostic severity (Mdif = -0.81, p = 0.01), with a strong effect size (Cohen's d = 0.73). (4) Conclusions: The findings are increasingly indicating a potential association between oral diseases and a range of systemic diseases. The impact of periodontal disease on the quality of life is significant, especially in individuals with associated systemic conditions and present risk factors.

Abstract
PURPOSE Most individuals experience significant deterioration in their oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in the first few days after tooth extraction. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) protocols on OHRQoL after extraction of lower molars. METHODS The investigators designed a double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial study. Patients with indications for lower molar extraction were included in the study and randomized into four groups: control group, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy group, LLLT group (LLLT.G), and aPDT and LLLT group (aPDT + LLLT.G).The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire was used through an interview with the participants before the extraction (T0 - baseline) and on the 7th (T1) and 30th (T2) days after extraction. Other variables were age, sex, ethnicity, decayed-missing-filled teeth (DMFT) and tooth types. Appropriate univariate and bivariate statistics were computed, and statistical significance was set at a value P < .05. RESULTS The sample was composed of 40 patients with a mean age of 41.25 ± 13.97 and 25 (62.5%) were women. The mean OHIP-14 scores were significantly different in the intervals at T0 versus T1 and T0 versus T2 for all domains (P < .001), demonstrating a positive impact on the OHRQoL. The total scores indicated a significant improvement in the OHRQoL in the aPDT (7.10, standard deviation 4.18, P = .043), LLLT (6.40, SD 5.87, P = .025), and aPDT + LLLT (5.30, SD 3.59, P = .012) groups compared to that in the control group (12.90, SD 6.64) at T1. Patients undergoing extraction of lower mandibular molars with aPDT + LLLT had the lowest mean OHIP-14 total score at T1 (5.30) and T2 (0.70). CONCLUSION The aPDT and LLLT protocols had a positive impact on the participants' OHRQoL. These procedures can be applied in everyday surgical practice.

Abstract
In stage IV periodontitis patients with pathologic tooth migration (PTM), interdisciplinary treatment includes regenerative periodontal surgery (RPS) with an application of biomaterials and orthodontic therapy (OT) to restore function, esthetics and thereby quality of life (QoL). In a 24-month randomized trial we explored the synergy between regenerative medicine and biomechanical force application. The following methods were used: Forty-three patients had been randomized to a combined treatment comprising RPS and subsequent OT starting either 4 weeks (early OT) or 6 months (late OT) post-operatively. Clinical periodontal parameters and oral health-related QoL (GOHAI) were recorded up to 24 months. We obtained the following results: Mean clinical attachment gain (∆CAL ± SD) was significantly higher with early OT (5.96 ± 2.1 mm) versus late OT (4.65 ± 1.76 mm) (p = 0.034). Pocket closure (PPD ≤ 4 mm) was obtained in 91% of defects with early OT compared to 90% with late OT. GOHAI-scores decreased significantly from 26.1 ± 7.5 to 9.6 ± 4.7 (early OT) and 25.1 ± 7.1 to 12.7 ± 5.6 (late OT). Inconclusion, teeth severely compromised by intrabony defects and PTM can be treated successfully by RPS followed by early OT with the advantage of an overall reduced treatment time. As a result of the combined periodontal-orthodontic therapy, the oral health-related QoL of patients was significantly improved. Early stimulation of wound healing with orthodontic forces had a favorable impact on the outcomes of regenerative periodontal surgery.

Abstract
This longitudinal study aimed to investigate the association between self-perceived oral health, oral-health-related quality-of-life (OHRQoL), toothache, and university students' academic performance or dropout. A cohort of 2,089 students from 64 different courses at a public university in southern Brazil was interviewed in 2016 regarding their self-perceived oral health (Locker instrument; dichotomized into good/poor), OHRQoL (Oral Impacts on Daily Performances instrument, OIDP) and having had any toothache over the last 6 months (yes/no). After three years (2020), the academic records of 1,870 of these students were assessed, their average grade over all courses evaluated, and their dropout status was determined. Multivariable linear or logistic regression adjusting for gender, skin color, age, family income and maternal education was used to associate oral health variables (self-perceived oral health, OIDP, toothache) and academic performance or dropout. In 2016, 28.6% reported negative self-perceived oral health through the Locker instrument and 31.4% had toothache in the last 6 months. Over the next three years, 36.2% had dropped out. In multivariable regression, toothache in the last 6 months had a decrease of 0.32 (β -0.32, CI95% -0.59; -0.04) points in the final grade and were 35% (OR 1.35 CI95% 1.08; 1.69) more likely to dropout than students without toothache. In conclusion, this study showed that worse oral health conditions may be associated with worse academic performance or dropping out.

Abstract
AIM To compare the level of inflammatory markers and endothelial function 24 h (Day 1) and 90 days (Day 90) after conventional quadrant-wise scaling and root planing (Q-SRP) versus one-stage full-mouth SRP (FM-SRP) in patients affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients affected by periodontitis and T2DM were randomly allocated to receive FM-SRP or Q-SRP and followed up at Day 1 and Day 90. Serum samples, vital signs, and flow-mediated dilation (FMD) parameters were collected at baseline, Day 1, and Day 90. Periodontal variables were collected at baseline and Day 90. The primary outcome was the C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration at Day 1 after periodontal treatment. Student's t-test for independent samples was used for between-group comparisons (Mann-Whitney U test for non-normal data), while analysis of variance with post hoc Tukey tests (Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests for non-normal data) were used for intra-group comparisons. RESULTS Forty subjects were included in the study. FM-SRP produced a significant increase in CRP and a significant reduction in FMD at Day 1 compared to Q-SRP (p < .05). The absolute change in HbA1c (mmol/mol) from baseline to Day 90 was significantly improved in the Q-SRP (ΔHbA1c = -1.59 [SD = 1.20]) compared to the FM-SRP group (ΔHbA1c = -0.8 [SD = 0.95]) (p = .04). CONCLUSIONS FM-SRP triggers a robust acute-phase response at 24 h after treatment compared to Q-SRP. Such systemic acute perturbations may offset the beneficial systemic effects of periodontal treatment in terms of HbA1c reduction and improvement in endothelial function in T2DM subjects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare periodontitis prevalence estimates obtained using the new classification system with those generated using other case definitions from the literature, examine the strength of the association between tobacco smoking and periodontitis (and that between periodontitis and its impact on oral-health-related quality of life; OHRQoL) using those definitions. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the 2009 New Zealand Oral Health Survey, a cross-sectional dental examination survey of a representative sample of people aged 18 or over. We identified cases using 10 different periodontitis case definitions and then compared weighted prevalence estimates across those. The associations between smoking and periodontitis, and between periodontitis and short-form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) scores, were then compared across the various case definitions. RESULTS There was considerable variation in periodontitis prevalence estimates (range 3% to 59%). All definitions (but one) showed a higher prevalence of periodontitis in smokers than in non-smokers. The new classification stage III definition showed the strongest association, with an adjusted prevalence ratio of 1.99 (95%CI: 1.35, 2.91). All case definitions (but one) had a higher mean OHIP-14 score among people with periodontitis. CONCLUSIONS Periodontitis prevalence estimates are greatly influenced by case definition choice. The new classification system may be more accurate than any other used to date, but questions remain about its utility for periodontal epidemiology.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the influence of smile esthetics on the quality of life in a Han Chinese population. METHODS A total of 110 Han Chinese volunteers (52 males and 58 females, mean age 26.7 years) were recruited, and frontal images of their smiles were collected. A photoediting program was used to evaluate the following components of smile esthetics: the buccal corridor ratios, the angle between the interpupillary and commissural lines, the number of visible teeth, and width-to-length ratios of the maxillary central incisors. Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in these volunteers was evaluated using the Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14). Statistical analyses were performed by using Pearson's correlations and multiple linear regression (α = 0.05). RESULTS Compared to males, females scored higher on psychological impact (p = 0.017). Moreover, the number of visible teeth had a significant effect on social impact, psychological impact and esthetic concern (all p < 0.05). However, the buccal corridor ratios, the angle between the interpupillary and commissural lines, and the width-to-length ratios of the maxillary central incisor did not correlate with the OHRQoL (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The number of visible teeth significantly influenced the quality of life in a Han Chinese population. Smile esthetics had a significantly greater psychological impact on females than males. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE This study highlights the effects of smile esthetics on the quality of life in a Han Chinese population. Female patients may raise more esthetic concerns in clinical practice.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the association between 11 oral conditions and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study used a multistage sampling strategy to draw a representative sample of adults aged ≥35 years living in Porto Alegre, Brazil. OHRQoL was assessed using OHIP-14. Oral examinations were conducted to assess gingivitis, dental calculus, tooth loss, gingival recession (GR), dentine hypersensitivity (DHS), dental caries (DFT), dental erosion, and non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL). Questionnaires recorded the following self-reported oral variables: xerostomia, halitosis, and perceived need for dental treatment. Structural Equation Models were used to assess the associations adjusting to demographic and behavioral variables. RESULTS 1022 individuals were analyzed. The overall OHIP mean equaled 9.2 ± 9.7 points. Xerostomia [coefficient (coef)=0.10], halitosis (coef=0.28), DFT (coef=0.16), and DHS (coef=0.19) were significantly and directly associated with negative impacts of OHIP-14. GR was significantly and indirectly associated with poor OHRQoL due to higher DHS. Perceived need for dental treatment was significantly and directly associated with higher OHIP-14 (coef=0,40). CONCLUSIONS Poor OHRQoL was observed in a sample of Brazilian adults and old people. Five important oral conditions were associated to poor OHRQoL. Tooth loss, gingivitis, calculus, dental erosion and NCCL did not associate with OHRQoL. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Poorer oral health related quality of life is observed in a Brazilian urban area compared to other parts of the world. Xerostomia, halitosis, dental caries, gingival recession, and dentine hypersensitivity may be targeted to improve oral health and consequently oral health related quality of life.

Abstract
Introduction This research investigates framing in online patient information for those newly diagnosed with periodontitis.Methods This study is a cross-sectional analysis of websites using corpus linguistic techniques. A Google search was conducted with the term 'gum disease.' Ten pages of search results were reviewed and information available was separated into types of resource: retail, healthcare, and dental practice websites. The dataset was analysed in terms of word frequency, collocation and keyness as compared to the British National Corpus Written Sampler. Differences between sources were assessed.Results Across combined data sources, there was a tendency for the most advanced symptoms of periodontitis to be given prominence. There was also a negative skew towards avoidance of negative outcomes of treatment rather than achieving positive ones. When comparing types of resource, retail websites tended to be more positive, with a focus on improving 'milder' stages of disease.Conclusions Negative framing could potentially induce engagement with treatment and self-care by the process of 'fear-appeal'; however, there is a risk that negativity demotivates an already anxious patient. Further research is required to evaluate patient perceptions of the information and to investigate effects this could have on behaviour change.

Abstract
Background A low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR <90 mL/min/1.73 m2) is widely recognized as a risk factor for major adverse cardiac events (MACE) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusion (CTO). However, the impact of successful CTO-PCI on quality of life (QOL) of patients with low eGFR remains unknown. Objectives The aim of this prospective study was to assess the QOL of CTO patients with low eGFR after successful PCI. Methods Consecutive patients undergoing elective CTO-PCI were prospectively enrolled and subdivided into four groups: eGFR ≥90 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 410), 90 > eGFR ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 482), 60 > eGFR ≥ 30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 161), and eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (n = 23). The primary outcomes included QOL, as assessed with the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire, and symptoms, as assessed with the Rose Dyspnea Scale (RDS) and Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ), at 1 month and 1 year after successful PCI. Results With the decline of eGFR, CTO patients were more likely to present with comorbidities of hypertension, diabetes, hyperuricemia, and previous stroke, in addition to lower hemoglobin levels and left ventricular ejection fraction (p < 0.05). Low eGFR was associated with greater incidences of in-hospital pericardiocentesis, major bleeding, acute renal failure, and subcutaneous hematoma, but not in-hospital MACE (p < 0.05). Symptoms of dyspnea and angina were alleviated in all CTO patients with eGFR ≥30 mL/min/1.73 m2 at 1 month and 1 year after successful CTO-PCI, but only at 1 month for those with eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m2 (p < 0.01). Importantly, QOL was markedly improved at 1 month and 1 year after successful PCI (p < 0.01), notably at a similar degree between patients with low eGFR and those with normal eGFR (p > 0.05). Conclusion Successful PCI effectively improved symptoms and QOL of CTO patients with low eGFR.

Abstract
Background: Chronic renal failure (CRF) is a major public health problem affecting individuals’ quality of life (QOL). Hemodialysis is one of the most common treatments for CRF. Although hemodialysis increases the life expectancy of CRF patients, it also arouses several problems affecting these patients’ QOL. Objectives: This study aimed to detect factors affecting QOL in hemodialysis patients in the East Azerbaijan province, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the East Azerbaijan Province in 2021. Data collection instruments were the SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire and a demographic information checklist. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS software version 25 using Spearman’s rank correlation, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: The mean score of QOL was 42.6 ± 7.6, and the mean scores of the physical and psychological dimensions of QOL were 40.7 ± 9.9 and 43.4 ± 7.4, respectively. The highest mean score of QOL was 44.6 ± 6.2 for men, 42.7 ± 5.8 for the married, and 41.2 ± 6.9 for those with high levels of education. The mean score of QOL was not significantly correlated with any of the individual characteristics and clinical factors, except for age (P = 0.03), level of education (P = 0.03), and duration of each dialysis session (P = 0.05). From the QOL dimensions, physical dimension had a significant relationship with marital status (P = 0.03), age (P = 0.04), and duration of each dialysis session (P = 0.02). Moreover, psychological dimension was significantly correlated with marital status (P = 0.01). Conclusions: Patients undergoing hemodialysis have low QOL and need further attention from the authorities in terms of care and social support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients' experiences, feelings, and perceptions play key roles in quality of life and dental care quality, but they are poorly understood in periodontal disease. Therefore, this meta-synthesis aimed to gain deep insights into the feelings, experiences, and perceptions of people living with periodontal disease. METHODS Electronic database searches in PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Open AIRE were conducted up to December 2021 (updated in June 2022). The JBI Critical Appraisal Tool was used for quality assessment. Then reviewers integrated findings from qualitative studies with a thematic synthesis approach. RESULTS A total of 567 studies were identified, of which eight involving 131 participants met the inclusion criteria. Studies were conducted between 2008 and 2021within Europe (Sweden and UK), Asia (Korea, Indonesia, and Singapore), and Oceania (New Zealand). Three analytical themes with nine descriptive themes emerged from the qualitative data. The themes were as follows: (1) "pressure (physical, psychosocial, and financial)," (2) "coping and adaptation (avoidance of the status quo, trying to understand it, and taking responsibility for their own)," (3) "reflection and evaluation (exploring the causes, personal control, and calling for better dental care)." CONCLUSIONS This review provides insights into how patients perceive and cope with periodontal disease. The findings highlighted patient-centered care in PD, and based on the findings, it is possible to provide more precise and efficient interventions for better patient compliance and treatment outcomes.

Abstract
La periodontitis es una enfermedad crónica de tipo no transmisible, caracterizada por ser inflamatoria, infecciosa y multifactorial. Es una de las enfermedades más prevalentes en cavidad oral hasta el punto de ser considerada una epidemia. Esta condición se puede prevenir y tratar; sin embargo, las medidas sanitarias siguen siendo insuficientes para lograr un control efectivo en la práctica clínica. La progresión de la periodontitis se basa en la presencia de un microbioma disbiótico que desencadena una respuesta inflamatoria del huésped, lo cual se traduce clínicamente en la pérdida del tejido de soporte dental y provoca su pérdida. Cabe destacar la importancia del conocimiento sobre la relación existente entre la enfermedad periodontal y la salud sistémica, la bidireccionalidad y la necesidad del manejo multidisciplinario. La periodontitis representa un problema para la salud pública de los países de Latinoamérica y es responsabilidad que los estados gubernamentales, así como de todo el personal sanitario, ejecutar estrategias de salud con el fin de reducir el impacto de la enfermedad en las poblaciones más vulnerables. El objetivo del presente ensayo es analizar los factores por los cuales la enfermedad periodontal sigue siendo altamente prevalente y, así mismo, promover la prevención de la enfermedad y medidas de control.

Abstract
AIM To compare the level of inflammatory markers, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and gingival parameters 1 month after introduction of electric toothbrush and intensive oral hygiene maneuvers adaptation (OHI) versus routine habits (no-OHI) in patients affected by generalized gingivitis. METHODS 140 subjects with generalized gingivitis were randomized to receive either OHI or no-OHI. Full-mouth plaque/bleeding scores (FMPS/FMBS), serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6- (IL-6) and an Oral health impact profile-14 questionnaire (OHIP-14) were collected at baseline and at 1-month follow-up visit. RESULTS In the OHI, a significant FMPS and FMPBS reduction (p<0.01), a significant intragroup decrease in hs-CRP and IL-6 (p<0.01) and a significant improvement of OHRQoL (p<0.01) was noted at 1-month. In the no-OHI, lower-magnitude differences were noted only for oral parameters. Resolution of gingivitis varied between OHI and no-OHI (89% versus 7% respectively, p<0.01). A Logistic multivariate regression suggested that FMBS ≤8% was associated with odds ratio of 13 of having both CRP and IL-6 below the selected threshold for healthy young adults (p=0.04). CONCLUSIONS Gingivitis resolution determined important reductions of gingival inflammation and plaque levels, as well as systemic inflammatory markers and an improvement of quality of life (NCT03848351).

Abstract
AIM The aim of this prospective study was to describe long-term patient-reported outcomes following surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. METHODS Oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of 43 patients diagnosed with peri-implantitis was recorded using the short form of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14), where low scores indicate low impact. A Norwegian version of the OHIP-14 form was filled out 1 week before and 6-, 18- and 36 months after the peri-implant surgery. The mean and median OHIP-14 scores were calculated for its seven domains (i.e Functional limitation, Physical pain, Psychological discomfort, Physical disability, Psychological disability, Sosial disability and Handicap) across four different time-points. The dataset was analyzed to find correlations between independent variables and the OHIP-scores. RESULTS The OHIP-14 scores were at a low level from baseline to 36 months post-surgery. The mean scores at specific timepoints were at baseline 7.2 (SD 7.3), 6 months post-surgery 6.0 (SD 6.9), 18 months post-surgery 6.8 (SD 9.7) and 3 years post-surgery 7.0 (SD 9.4). None of these changes were statistically significant. Specific domains of OHRQoL did not significantly differ across different time-points (pre- and post-surgery) in males (except for domain 'handicap') or females (except for domain 'functional limitation'). CONCLUSIONS The reported OHIP-14 measures were initially low and stayed low up to three years after peri-implant surgery. This may indicate that neither the disease nor the treatment deteriorated or improved the OHRQoL.

Abstract
AIM To assess the effect of surgical root coverage (RC) on dentin hypersensitivity (DH) associated with gingival recession. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two independent reviewers conducted electronic literature searches in MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web Of Science, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, ScienceDirect, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases as well as a manual search to identify eligible clinical studies from January 2000 to March 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing two surgical RC techniques or a surgical RC technique with or without adjuvant were included. Meta-analyses were performed on data provided by RCTs. RESULTS Thirteen RCTs with a total of 701 patients (1086 recessions) were included. The percentage of DH suppression was 70.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] [64.4-76.6]; I2 = 39.2% [3.5-61.8], Q-test = 0.02) after surgical RC. Recession reduction and percentage of RC were both statistically significantly associated with DH suppression (estimate = 0.66 [0.10-1.23], p = .022, R2 = 14.45% and estimate = 0.04 [0.01-0.08], p = .012, R2 = 29.54%, respectively). Coronally advanced flap (CAF) + connective tissue graft showed results statistically more effective than CAF + xenogeneic collagen matrix in DH suppression (73.3% [65.6-79.8] and 61.4% [51.7-70.3], respectively; p = .048). CONCLUSIONS Success of surgical RC is associated with DH suppression.

Abstract
Tetrahedral DNA nanostructures (TDNs) are molecules with a pyramidal structure formed by folding four single strands of DNA based on the principle of base pairing. Although DNA has polyanionic properties, the special spatial structure of TDNs allows them to penetrate the cell membrane without the aid of transfection agents in a caveolin-dependent manner and enables them to participate in the regulation of cellular processes without obvious toxic side effects. Because of their stable spatial structure, TDNs resist the limitations imposed by nuclease activity and innate immune responses to DNA. In addition, TDNs have good editability and biocompatibility, giving them great advantages for biomedical applications. Previous studies have found that TDNs have a variety of biological properties, including promoting cell migration, proliferation and differentiation, as well as having anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-infective and immune regulation capabilities. Moreover, we confirmed that TDNs can promote the regeneration and repair of skin, blood vessels, muscles and bone tissues. Based on these findings, we believe that TDNs have broad prospects for application in wound repair and regeneration. This article reviews recent progress in TDN research and its applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND After diagnosis of periodontitis is made, detection of stage IV cases is critical for appropriate management that may call for interdisciplinary care. This study aims to identify and assess the accuracy of a simple screening approach for practice and surveillance of stage IV periodontitis. METHODS Masticatory function assessments by both validated self-reported masticatory dysfunction questionnaire and dual-color chewing gum mixing ability test (index test) were conducted in 214 consecutive patients, followed by a full-mouth periodontal examination. Periodontal diagnosis was based on the 2017 World Workshop classification of periodontal diseases (reference standard). Multivariate logistic regression and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) analyses were performed. RESULTS Overall, the individual patient-reported masticatory dysfunction questions showed low to moderate accuracy for predicting Stage IV periodontitis. The objective measures of masticatory function by calculating the variance of hue from the chewing gum test performed better with an AUROC of 0.840. A diagnostic approach based on age, self-report of altered food type intake, and chewing gum test result exhibited excellent performance for predicting Stage IV periodontitis (sensitivity: 89.7%; specificity:76.3%; AUROC:0.912). CONCLUSIONS Once the presence of periodontitis has been established, a simple diagnostic approach that does not require specialized workforce, complex or lengthy assessment allows identification of Stage IV periodontitis patients. This is important as these patients require specific case work up and interdisciplinary care pathways. Additional studies are required to validate the findings in multiple populations. Abstract
Objectives: To shorten the 24-item Arabic Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ(A)) for adolescents in Yemen. Material and methods: Two shortening methods derived six-item and nine-item versions: the item impact method selected items with the highest impact scores as rated by 30 participants in each subscale; and the regression method was applied using data of 385 participants from the PIDAQ(A) validity study, with the total PIDAQ(A) score as the dependent variable, and its individual items as the independent variables. The four derived versions were assessed for validity and reliability. Results: The means of the six-item and nine-item short versions of both methods were close. Cronbach’s alpha values extended from 0.90 to 0.92 (intra-class correlations = 0.85−0.88). In criterion validity, strong significant correlations were detected between scores of all short versions and the 24-item PIDAQ(A) score (0.96−0.98; p < 0.001). Construct validity displayed significant associations among all short versions and self-perceived dental appearance rank and self-perceived need for orthodontic braces rank (p < 0.05). Mean scores of all short versions were significantly different between adolescents with severe malocclusion and those with slight malocclusion in discriminant validity tests. In conclusion, all PIDAQ(A) short versions are valid and reliable.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We investigated the long-term usage pattern and satisfaction of continent catheterizable channels (CCCs). METHODS From 2005 to 2018, CCCs, including Mitrofanoff and antegrade continent enema (ACE) channels, were made in 67 patients (Mitrofanoff in 21 patients, ACE channels in 43 patients, and both in three patients) in our institution. An online survey was conducted for these patients in order to assess usage pattern, continent status, difficulty in usage, and patient satisfaction. RESULTS Sixteen (66.7%) out of 24 patients with the Mitrofanoff channel and 39 (84.7%) out of 46 patients with the ACE channel completed the online survey. In the Mitrofanoff channel group, 10 (62.5%) patients had spina bifida, two (12.5%) had Hinman syndrome, one (6.3%) had posterior urethral valves, and three (18.8%) had urethral trauma or atresia. Additionally, the mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 10.0 years, and the median follow-up duration was 10.9 years. All patients were using the Mitrofanoff channel to perform clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). Eleven patients (68.8%) had difficulty with catheterization, mostly at the stomal site. Most patients conducted CIC more than four times a day (13, 81.3%). Regarding urination status, seven patients (43.8%) responded that they were satisfied and nine (56.2%) responded they were neutral. In the ACE channel group, 35 patients (89.7%) had spina bifida, seven (17.9%) had cloacal anomalies, and 26 (66.7%) had anorectal malformations. The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 8.4 years, and the median follow-up period was 7.4 years. Two (5.1%) patients were no longer using their ACE channels, but 15 (38.5%) patients were still using their channels almost daily. Twenty-eight (71.8%) patients complained that performing enema was time-consuming, and seven (17.9%) patients reported pain when performing ACE and fecal incontinence. Most patients were satisfied with their defecation status (23, 59%), 15 (38.5%) were neutral, and one (2.6%) was dissatisfied. CONCLUSIONS While most patients who had either Mitrofanoff or ACE channels were still using their channels effectively, approximately half of the patients with CCCs demonstrated neutral satisfaction with their current status; this shows a poor result compared to previous reports. Considering the results of our patient-based study, thorough explanations should be provided to patients who are candidates for Mitrofanoff and ACE procedures; additionally, the discomfort related to the procedures should be comprehensively assessed during follow-up consults.

The effects of connective tissue graft position on clinical and aesthetical outcomes of gingival recession treatment: a controlled randomized clinical trial. Clin Oral Investig 2021; 26:2751-2759. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This randomized controlled clinical trial with 1-year follow-up compared the clinical and aesthetic results of coronally advanced flap (CAF) + connective tissue graft (CTG) positioned apical to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) (CAF + CTG-ACEJ) with CAF + CTG positioned on the CEJ (CAF + CTG-CEJ) for treating isolated gingival recession defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-eight patients with recession type 1 (RT 1) with a depth ≥ 3, gingival recessions were enrolled. Nineteen patients were randomly assigned to the CAF + CTG-ACEJ group or CAF + CTG-CEJ group. Clinical and aesthetical evaluations were made at 6 and 12 months. RESULTS While the 6 months results showed that both surgical techniques were similar for clinical outcomes, the results achieved at the 6th month were more stable in the CAF + CTG-ACEJ group at the 12th month with significantly better recession depth, mean, and complete root coverage values and aesthetical results. CONCLUSIONS Isolated gingival recession defects can be clinically successfully treated by both CAF + CTG-ACEJ and CAF + CTG-CEJ techniques. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Limited studies have compared the clinical and aesthetical effects of positioning CTG apical to the CEJ for the treatment of gingival recessions. This randomized clinical study showed that CAF + CTG-ACEJ technique can provide additional benefit for the treatment. The described technique is effective in obtaining better long-term CRC stability and aesthetics.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the effect of rehabilitation in fully/partially edentulous patients with stage IV periodontitis on oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and systemic health. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic electronic and manual search was conducted. Three authors independently reviewed, selected, and extracted the data. Outcomes were OHRQoL (Oral Health Impact Profile 14 [OHIP-14] and OHIP-49, General Oral Health Assessment Index [GOHAI], visual analogue scale, symptoms registration) and systemic health-related outcomes (incidence and prevalence of systemic diseases, values of systemic disease indicators). Qualitative data were synthesized for OHRQoL and systemic health-related outcomes. Meta-analysis was conducted on available quantitative data. RESULTS The search identified 59 articles (6724 subjects in total). OHRQoL improved across all the studies, irrespective of the number of missing teeth, their location, or treatment modality. Meta-analysis showed significant improvement of OHIP-49 (36.86, p < .01) in manuscripts including subjects affected by periodontitis, consistently with the remaining literature (reduction of score points post rehabilitation: OHIP-14 = 10.52, OHIP-49 = 56.02, GOHAI = 5.40, p < .01 for all). Non-rehabilitated subjects exhibited inferior cognitive status, higher medication intake, and frailty. However, our data are limited and should be interpreted with caution. CONCLUSIONS Oral rehabilitation improves OHRQoL and, potentially, systemic health in edentulous patients. It is unclear whether these findings may be extrapolated to patients with stage IV periodontitis.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory immune disease associated with a dysbiotic state, influenced by keystone bacterial species responsible for disrupting the periodontal tissue homeostasis. Furthermore, the severity of periodontitis is determined by the interaction between the immune cell response in front of periodontitis-associated species, which leads to the destruction of supporting periodontal tissues and tooth loss in a susceptible host. The persistent bacterial challenge induces modifications in the permeability and ulceration of the sulcular epithelium, which facilitates the systemic translocation of periodontitis-associated bacteria into distant tissues and organs. This stimulates the secretion of pro-inflammatory molecules and a chronic activation of immune cells, contributing to a systemic pro-inflammatory status that has been linked with a higher risk of several systemic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Although periodontitis and GDM share the common feature of systemic inflammation, the molecular mechanistic link of this association has not been completely clarified. This review aims to examine the potential biological mechanisms involved in the association between periodontitis and GDM, highlighting the contribution of both diseases to systemic inflammation and the role of new molecular participants, such as extracellular vesicles and non-coding RNAs, which could act as novel molecular intercellular linkers between periodontal and placental tissues.

Abstract
AIM To determine the association between periodontitis stage and grade with oral-health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). MATERIALS AND METHODS This cohort was derived from the Porto Alegre study. The original sample was representative of more than 3 million inhabitants of a Brazilian urban area. Full-mouth periodontal examinations at six sites per tooth were performed at baseline and 5 years later. Periodontitis grade was determined by direct evidence of progression of attachment loss over the follow-up. Stage of periodontitis and OHRQoL, determined by the oral health impact profile version 14 (OHIP-14), were recorded at the follow-up examination. Mean ratios (MRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated adjusting for age, sex, smoking, systemic diseases, tooth loss, and baseline periodontitis diagnosis. RESULTS Five-hundred and ninety-nine individuals were analysed. Individuals with periodontitis grade C + stage II (MR = 1.49; 95% CI = 1.08-2.04) and stages III/IV (MR = 1.83; 95% CI = 1.25-2.66) had significantly higher OHIP scores than those without periodontitis or with periodontitis stage I/grade B. Individuals with periodontitis stages II and III/IV + grade B did not differ from those without periodontitis or with periodontitis stage I/grade B. CONCLUSION Severity and progression rate of periodontitis are associated with poor OHRQoL.

Abstract
In the mid-1960s the microbial aetiology of periodontal diseases was introduced based on classical experimental gingivitis studies . Since then, numerous studies have addressed the fundamental role that oral microbiota plays in the initiation and progression of periodontal diseases. Recent advances in laboratory identification techniques have contributed to a better understanding of the complexity of the oral microbiome in both health and disease. Modern culture-independent methods such as human oral microbial identification microarray and next-generation sequencing have been used to identify a wide variety of microbial taxa residing in the gingival sulcus and the periodontal pocket. The first theory of the 'non-specific plaque' hypothesis gave rise to the 'ecological plaque' hypothesis and more recently to the 'polymicrobial synergy and dysbiosis hypothesis'. Periodontitis is now considered to be a multimicrobial inflammatory disease in which the various bacterial species within the dental biofilm are in a dysbiotic state and this imbalance favours the establishment of chronic inflammatory conditions and ultimately the destruction of tooth-supporting tissues. Apart from the known putative periodontal pathogens, the whole biofilm community is now considered to play a role in the establishment of inflammation and the initiation and progression of periodontitis in a susceptible host. Treatment is unlikely to eliminate putative pathogens but, when it is thoroughly performed it has the potential to establish a healthy ecosystem by altering the microbial community in numbers and composition and also contribute to the maturation of the host immune response.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a common disease that causes periodontium defects and tooth loss. Controlling inflammation and tissue regeneration are two key strategies in the treatment of periodontitis. Tetrahedral framework nucleic acids can modulate multiple biological behaviors, and thus, their biological applications have been widely explored. In this study, we investigated the effect of tFNAs on periodontium under inflammatory conditions. Lipopolysaccharide and silk ligature were used to induce inflammation in vivo and in vitro. The results displayed that tFNAs decreased the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and levels of cellular reactive oxygen species in periodontal ligament stem cells, which promoted osteogenic differentiation. Furthermore, animal experiments showed that tFNAs ameliorated the inflammation of the periodontium and protect periodontal tissue, especially reducing alveolar bone absorption by decreasing inflammatory infiltration and inhibiting osteoclast formation. These findings suggest that tFNAs can significantly improve the therapeutic effect of periodontitis and have the great potential significance in the field of periodontal tissue regeneration. tFNAs decreased the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and promoted osteogenic differentiation. tFNAs ameliorated the inflammation of the periodontium and protect periodontal tissue. tFNAs can significantly improve the therapeutic effect of periodontitis.

Abstract
Severe periodontitis is defined by extensive loss of the tooth attachment apparatus. It is the sixth most common human disease and is estimated to affect 11.2% of the global adult population, hence representing a significant healthcare, social, and economic burden. Since the 1990s, multiple epidemiologic, experimental, and interventional studies have evidenced how periodontitis may also impact systemic health and it has been independently associated with the majority of chronic noncommunicable diseases. The evidence supporting these associations, mainly focusing on diabetes, pregnancy complications, and cardiovascular disease, was thoroughly reviewed in 2012 by an international consensus workshop. In the last 5 years, however, important advances have been made, not only in our understanding of the etiopathogenesis of periodontitis, or concerning the mounting evidence regarding the independent associations between periodontitis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, but also with many other systemic diseases including metabolic disease and obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, certain cancers, respiratory diseases, and cognitive disorders including Alzheimer's disease. This review describes these scientific advances by gathering together the existing evidence on the importance and relevance of the associations between periodontitis and many systemic diseases.

Abstract
AIM To assess the impact of two root canal treatment protocols on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of patients in need of root canal treatment on their anterior teeth. METHODOLOGY The sample consisted of 120 participants (mean age: 34 years) enrolled in a pragmatic randomized clinical trial evaluating two root canal treatment protocols. Anterior teeth with nonvital pulps were allocated for root canal preparation with either hand files and filled with lateral compaction of gutta-percha (manual protocol) or canal preparation with a single file in a reciprocating movement and filled with a single cone technique (Reciproc protocol). OHRQoL data were assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile instrument (OHIP-14), which was administered before the root canal intervention (baseline), and 6 and 12 months after treatment. Demographic and clinical characteristics of participants were collected at baseline. Data were analysed using bivariate analyses, Poisson univariate and multiple regression (α = 0.05). RESULTS The drop-out rate from baseline was 27% and 28% at 6 and 12 months after treatment, respectively. Both root canal protocols significantly enhanced patients' OHRQoL, regardless of the follow-up time (P < 0.001). After 6 months, patients treated with the Reciproc protocol had significantly lower OHIP-14 overall scores (P = 0.030), as well as significantly lower scores for psychological discomfort (P = 0.031) and social disability (P = 0.013). After 12 months, no significant difference was observed between the two root canal protocols for OHIP-14 overall scores (P = 0.174). Either large or moderate effect sizes were observed for all domains and overall scores at both evaluation times, irrespective of the protocol. Low-income persons (RR = 2.03) and the Reciproc protocol (RR = 1.52) had a higher likelihood of a positive impact on OHRQoL 12 months after root canal treatment. CONCLUSIONS The two root canal protocols improved the OHRQoL and differences in scores were observed only after 6 months with poorer OHRQoL for the manual protocol. After 12 months, patients with low-income status and treated with Reciproc were associated with a greater improvement in OHRQoL scores.
