Coastal wetland restoration improves habitat for juvenile sportfish in Tampa Bay, Florida, U.S.A

Comparative diets and prey resource competition between early-juvenile common snook Centropomus undecimalis and non-native pike killifish Belonesox belizanus

Pike killifish Belonesox belizanus is an established non-native fish species in Florida, USA, that was first documented in south Florida in 1957 and then in Tampa Bay tributaries in 1994. Decreases in small-bodied fish abundances have been linked to the introduction of B. belizanus in both of these regions. Increases in the range and abundance of B. belizanus in the Tampa Bay area and overlap in habitat usage have led to concerns about potential competition with, and predation on, early-juvenile common snook Centropomus undecimalis [≤100 mm standard length (SL)]. Stomach contents of B. belizanus (N = 422; 14-127 mm SL) and early-juvenile C. undecimalis (N = 1132; 5-119 mm SL) were collected to examine the dietary overlap of these two species and potential differences in the diet of early-juvenile C. undecimalis from locations with and without B. belizanus co-occurring. Prey resources were collected by seine to assess prey resource limitation and prey selectivity. Stomach content analysis indicated that there was low overlap in the diet of early-juvenile C. undecimalis and B. belizanus (C ≤ 0.40). Early-juvenile C. undecimalis had a wider diet breadth, consuming many organisms that are not consumed by B. belizanus and which make up a large portion of the early-juvenile C. undecimalis diet. Analysis of prey resources indicated that some prey groups may have lower abundances in locations where B. belizanus are present, with some of these differences reflected in the diet of early-juvenile C. undecimalis. Despite these differences, there was minimal difference in the diet overlap of early-juvenile C. undecimalis from locations with and without B. belizanus co-occurring. Currently B. belizanus appear to be competing minimally with early-juvenile C. undecimalis for prey resources, with no substantial impacts being detected.

Equivocal associations between small-scale shoreline restoration and subtidal fishes in an urban estuary

Restoration of degraded coastal and estuarine habitats owing to human activities is a major global concern. In Puget Sound, Washington, U.S.A., removal of hard armor from beaches and intertidal zones has become a priority for state and local agencies. However, the effectiveness of these shoreline restoration programs for subtidal habitats and fish is unknown. We surveyed six restoration sites in Puget Sound over 2 years to evaluate associations between shoreline restoration and subtidal fish abundance. We measured the abundance of juvenile salmonids and forage fishes along armored, restored, and reference shorelines. Bayesian generalized linear models showed limited support for associations between shoreline restoration and these fishes in the 3-7 years since armor removal. Pacific herring were more abundant at reference shorelines; the shoreline effect for surf smelt varied by survey site. Shoreline restoration was not an important predictor of salmonid abundance; the best models for Chinook and chum salmon included predictors for survey site and eelgrass, respectively. The retention of survey site in several species' top models reveals the influence of the broader landscape context. We also found seasonal variation in abundance for chum salmon and surf smelt. Our results suggest that juvenile forage fish and salmonids in estuaries likely have unique responses to shoreline features, and that the positive effects of armor removal either do not extend into subtidal areas or are not detectable at local scales. To be most effective, coastal restoration programs should consider broader landscape patterns as well as species-specific habitat needs when prioritizing investments.

Image-driven hydrological parameter coupled identification of flood plain wetland conservation and restoration sites

A good many works focus on wetland vulnerability; some works also explore restoration sites at a very limited spatial extent. But the satellite image-driven hydrological data-based approach adopted in this work is absolutely new. Moreover, existing work only focused on identifying restoration sites in the present context, but for devising long-term sustainable planning, predicted hydrological parameters based on possible restoration sites may be an effective tool. Considering this, the present work focused on exploring hydrological data (water presence frequency (WPF), hydro-period (HP) and water depth (WD)) from time-series satellite images. This exploration may resolve the hydrological data scarcity of wetland over the wider geographical areas. Using these parameters, we developed wetland restoration and conservation sites for different historical years (2008, 2018) and predicted years (2028) using ensemble machine learning (EML) models. From the analysis, it was found that water depth, hydro-period and WPF became poorer over the period, and the trend may seem to continue in predicted years. Among the applied EML models, Random Subspace (RS) predicted wetland restoration and conservation sites precisely over others. The predicted area under high-priority restoration sites is 34% in 2018, which was 14% in 2008. In 2028, 12% more areas may fall in this priority level. Wetland away from main streams (mainly ortho-fluvial wetland) and fringe wetland parts should be given more priority for restoration. These present and predicted information will effectively help to frame sustainable wetland restoration planning.

Restored Coastal Habitat Can “Reel In” Juvenile Sportfish: Population and Community Responses in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA

Coastal habitats are declining worldwide, which has impacted economically important fisheries, especially in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. As a result, extensive intertidal oyster reef and living shoreline restoration projects have been implemented. Restoration can also theoretically benefit predator populations, but this relationship is understudied. Here, the impact of habitat restoration on juvenile predatory fish (i.e., sportfish) populations (abundance) and communities (species richness, diversity, and assemblage) was assessed prior to and following oyster reef restoration and living shoreline stabilization for up to three years, and incorporated the influence of 17 environmental predictor variables. Juvenile sportfish abundance and richness (n = 11) were variable over time but collectively higher on restored oyster reefs compared to controls, and similar between control and stabilized shorelines. Sportfish abundance was best described by a combination of biotic features of the site (e.g., reef height and benthic substrate cover), prey abundance, decreasing distance to the nearest ocean inlet and dissolved oxygen. Results suggest future restoration site selection should emphasize adequate dissolved oxygen (~6 mg/L), oyster densities above 50/m2 and reef height above 55 mm, and minimum shoreline vegetation coverage of 50% to support macrofaunal prey and subsequently attract sportfish. These findings can help natural resource managers better use habitat restoration as a tool for enhancing fish populations in the future.
