Exploration of the Existence Forms and Patterns of Dissolved Oxygen Molecules in Water

The structure of liquid water is primarily composed of three-dimensional networks of water clusters formed by hydrogen bonds, and dissolved oxygen is one of the most important indicators for assessing water quality. In this work, distilled water with different concentration of dissolved oxygen were prepared, and a clear negative correlation between the size of water clusters and dissolved oxygen concentration was observed. Besides, a phenomenon of rapid absorption and release of oxygen at the water interfaces was unveiled, suggesting that oxygen molecules predominantly exist at the interfaces of water clusters. Oxygen molecules can move rapidly through the interfaces among water clusters, allowing dissolved oxygen to quickly reach a saturation level at certain partial pressure of oxygen and temperature. Further exploration into the mechanism by molecular dynamics simulations of oxygen and water clusters found that oxygen molecules can only exist stably at the interfaces among water clusters. A semi-empirical formula relating the average number of water molecules in a cluster (n) to 17O NMR half-peak width (W) was summarized: n = 0.1 W + 0.85. These findings provide a foundation for exploring the structure and properties of water.

Interfacial Glucose to Regulate Hydrated Lipid Bilayer Properties: Influence of Concentrations

A series of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out with a hydrated 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) bilayer with the variation of glucose concentrations from 0 to 30 wt % in the presence of 0.3 M NaCl. The study suggested that although the thickness of the lipid bilayer dropped significantly with the increase in glucose concentration, it expanded laterally at high glucose levels due to the intercalation of glucose between the headgroups of adjacent lipids. We adopted the surface assessment via the grid evaluation method to compute the deviation of the bilayer's key structural features for the different amounts of glucose present. This suggested that the accumulation of glucose molecules near the headgroups influences the local lipid bilayer undulation and crimping of the lipid tails. We find that the area compressibility modulus increases with the glucose level, causing enhanced bilayer rigidity arising from the slow lateral diffusion of lipids. The restricted lipid motion at high glucose concentrations controls the sustainability of the curved bilayer surface. Calculations revealed that certain orientations of CO → of interfacial glucose with the PN → of lipid headgroups are preferred, which helps the glucose to form direct hydrogen bonds (HBs) with the lipid headgroups. Such lipid-glucose (LG) HBs relax slowly at low glucose concentrations and exhibit a higher lifetime, whereas fast structural relaxation of LG HBs with a shorter lifetime was noticed at a higher glucose level. In contrast, lipid-water (LW) HBs exhibited a higher lifetime at a higher glucose level, which gradually decreased with the glucose level lowering. The study interprets that the glucose concentration-driven LW and LG interactions are mutually inclusive. Our detailed analysis will exemplify small saccharide concentration-driven membrane stabilizing efficiency, which is, in general, helpful for drug delivery study.

Self-Hybridized Vibrational-Mie Polaritons in Water Droplets

We study the self-hybridization between Mie modes supported by water droplets with stretching and bending vibrations in water molecules. Droplets with radii >2.7  μm are found to be polaritonic on the onset of the ultrastrong light-matter coupling regime. Similarly, the effect is observed in larger deuterated water droplets at lower frequencies. Our results indicate that polaritonic states are ubiquitous and occur in water droplets in mists, fogs, and clouds. This finding may have implications not only for polaritonic physics but also for aerosol and atmospheric sciences.

Photomolecular effect: Visible light interaction with air-water interface

Although water is almost transparent to visible light, we demonstrate that the air-water interface interacts strongly with visible light via what we hypothesize as the photomolecular effect. In this effect, transverse-magnetic polarized photons cleave off water clusters from the air-water interface. We use 14 different experiments to demonstrate the existence of this effect and its dependence on the wavelength, incident angle, and polarization of visible light. We further demonstrate that visible light heats up thin fogs, suggesting that this process can impact weather, climate, and the earth's water cycle and that it provides a mechanism to resolve the long-standing puzzle of larger measured clouds absorption to solar radiation than theory could predict based on bulk water optical constants. Our study suggests that the photomolecular effect should happen widely in nature, from clouds to fogs, ocean to soil surfaces, and plant transpiration and can also lead to applications in energy and clean water.

Effect of Extreme Variations of Fundamental Constants on the Structure of Atoms and Molecules

The fundamental constants (FCs) of physics are promoted to dynamic quantities in modern theories. So far most of the literature focused on small fractional variations in the values of FCs. In this paper, we investigate the novel regime of extreme but transient variations of FCs. We focus on the speed of light (c) and show that its variation can dramatically change the electronic structure and chemistry of atoms and molecules. These changes are induced by increased relativistic effects when c is reduced from its nominal value. To model these changes, we solve the fully relativistic Dirac equation at different values of c. We show that at extreme variations of c, the periodic table is truncated, the nominal ground states of atoms can change, water fails to serve as a universal solvent, and the ammonia molecule becomes planar.

Second inflection point of supercooled water surface tension induced by hydrogen bonds: A molecular-dynamics study

Surface tension of supercooled water is a fundamental property in various scientific processes. In this study, we perform molecular dynamics simulations with the TIP4P-2005 model to investigate the surface tension of supercooled water down to 220 K. Our results show a second inflection point (SIP) in the surface tension at temperature TSIP ≈ 267.5 ± 2.3 K. Using an extended IAPWS-E functional fit for the water surface tension, we calculate the surface excess internal-energy and entropy terms of the excess Helmholtz free energy. Similar to prior studies [Wang et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 21, 3360 (2019); Gorfer et al., J. Chem. Phys. 158, 054503 (2023)], our results show that the surface tension is governed by two driving forces: a surface excess entropy change above the SIP and a surface excess internal-energy change below it. We study hydrogen-bonding near the SIP because it is the main cause of water's anomalous properties. With decreasing temperature, our results show that the entropy contribution to the surface tension reaches a maximum slightly below the SIP and then decreases. This is because the number of hydrogen bonds increases more slowly below the SIP. Moreover, the strengths and lifetimes of the hydrogen bonds also rise dramatically below the SIP, causing the internal-energy term to dominate the excess surface free energy. Thus, the SIP in the surface tension of supercooled TIP4P-2005 water is associated with an increase in the strengths and lifetimes of hydrogen bonds, along with a decrease in the formation rate (#/K) of new hydrogen bonds.

Spectroscopic and Theoretical Identifications of Two Structural Motifs of (H2O)10 Cluster

Precise characterization of archetypal systems of aqueous hydrogen-bonding networks is essential for developing accurate potential functions and universal models of water. The structures of water clusters (H2O)n (n = 2-9) have been verified recently through size-specific infrared spectroscopy with a vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser (VUV-FEL) and quantum chemical studies. For (H2O)10, the pentagonal prism and butterfly motifs were proposed to be important building blocks and were observed in previous experiments. Here we report the size-specific infrared spectra of (H2O)10 via a joint experimental and theoretical study. Well-resolved spectra provide a unique signature for the coexistence of pentagonal prism and butterfly motifs. These (H2O)10 motifs develop from the dominant structures of (H2O)n (n = 8, 9) clusters. This work provides an intriguing prelude to the diverse structure of liquid water and opens avenues for size-dependent measurement of larger systems to understand the stepwise formation mechanism of hydrogen-bonding networks.

Structure and dynamics of liquid water from ab initio simulations: adding Minnesota density functionals to Jacob's ladder

The accurate representation of the structural and dynamical properties of water is essential for simulating the unique behavior of this ubiquitous solvent. Here we assess the current status of describing liquid water using ab initio molecular dynamics, with a special focus on the performance of all the later generation Minnesota functionals. Findings are contextualized within the current knowledge on DFT for describing bulk water under ambient conditions and compared to experimental data. We find that, contrary to the prevalent idea that local and semilocal functionals overstructure water and underestimate dynamical properties, M06-L, revM06-L, and M11-L understructure water, while MN12-L and MN15-L overdistance water molecules due to weak cohesive effects. This can be attributed to a weakening of the hydrogen bond network, which leads to dynamical fingerprints that are over fast. While most of the hybrid Minnesota functionals (M06, M08-HX, M08-SO, M11, MN12-SX, and MN15) also yield understructured water, their dynamical properties generally improve over their semilocal counterparts. It emerges that exact exchange is a crucial component for accurately describing hydrogen bonds, which ultimately leads to corrections in both the dynamical and structural properties. However, an excessive amount of exact exchange strengthens hydrogen bonds and causes overstructuring and slow dynamics (M06-HF). As a compromise, M06-2X is the best performing Minnesota functional for water, and its D3 corrected variant shows very good structural agreement. From previous studies considering nuclear quantum effects (NQEs), the hybrid revPBE0-D3, and the rung-5 RPA (RPA@PBE) have been identified as the only two approximations that closely agree with experiments. Our results suggest that the M06-2X(-D3) functionals have the potential to further improve the reproduction of experimental properties when incorporating NQEs through path integral approaches. This work provides further proof that accurate modeling of water interactions requires the inclusion of both exact exchange and balanced (non-local) correlation, highlighting the need for higher rungs on Jacob's ladder to achieve predictive simulations of complex biological systems in aqueous environments.

The temperature of maximum density for aqueous solutions

Experimental and theoretical advances for understanding the temperature of maximum density (TMD) of aqueous solutions are outlined. The main equations that relate the TMD behavior to key thermodynamic properties are stated. The experimental TMD data are classified as a function of the nature of the solute (inorganic electrolytes, non-electrolytes, organic salts and ionic liquids, and amino acids and proteins). In addition, the experimental results that explore the effect of pressure are detailed. These experimental data are rationalized by making use of qualitative and semi-quantitative arguments based on the thermodynamics of aqueous systems. The main theoretical and simulation advances in TMD for aqueous solutions are also shown-including new calculations in the context of the scaled particle theory-and their ability to reproduce the experimental data is evaluated. Finally, new experiments and theoretical and simulation developments, which could give important insights into the problem of TMD for aqueous solutions, are proposed.

Long-range, water-mediated interaction between a moderately active antifreeze protein molecule and the surface of ice

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that a molecule of moderately active antifreeze protein (type III AFP, QAE HPLC-12 isoform) is able to interact with ice in an indirect manner. This interaction occurs between the ice binding site (IBS) of the AFP III molecule and the surface of ice, and it is mediated by liquid water, which separates these surfaces. As a result, the AFP III molecule positions itself at a specific orientation and distance relative to the surface of ice, which enables the effective binding (via hydrogen bonds) of the molecule with the nascent ice surface. Our results show that the final adsorption of the AFP III molecule on the surface of ice is not achieved by chaotic diffusion movements, but it is preceded by a remote, water-mediated interaction between the IBS and the surface of ice. The key factor that determines the existence of this interaction is the ability of water molecules to spontaneously form large, high-volume aggregates that can be anchored to both the IBS of the AFP molecule and the surface of ice. The results presented in this work for AFP III are in full agreement with the ones obtained by us previously for hyperactive CfAFP, which indicates that the mechanism of the remote interaction of these molecules with ice remains unchanged despite significant differences in the molecular structure of their ice binding sites. For that reason, we can expect that also other types of AFPs interact with the ice surface according to an analogous mechanism.

Carboranylphosphines: B9-Substituted Derivatives with Enhanced Reactivity for the Anchoring to Dendrimers

Several ortho-carboranes bearing a phenoxy or a phenylamino group in the B9 position were prepared employing various protection and deprotection strategies. Following established protocols, dendritic compounds were synthesized from a hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene or thiophosphoryl chloride core, and possible anchoring options for the B9-substituted ortho-carboranes were investigated experimentally and theoretically (DFT). Furthermore, 1- or 1,2-phosphanyl-substituted carborane derivatives were obtained. The resulting diethyl-, diisopropyl-, di-tert-butyl-, diphenyl- or diethoxyphosphines bearing a tunable ortho-carborane moiety are intriguing ligands for future applications in homogeneous catalysis or the medicinal sector.

High, Multiple, and Nonvolatile Polarizations in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid [(CH3)3(CH2CH2Cl)N]2InCl5·H2O for Memcapacitor

Dielectrics with high, nonvolatile, and multiple polarizations are required for fabricating memcapacitors that enable high parallelism and low energy consumption in artificial neuromorphic computing systems as artificial synapses. Conventional ferroelectric materials based on displacive and order-disorder types generally have difficulty meeting these requirements due to their low polarization values (∼150 μC/cm2) and persistent electrical hysteresis loops. In this study, we report a novel organic-inorganic hybrid (CETM)2InCl5·H2O (CETM = (CH3)3(CH2CH2Cl)N) exhibiting an intriguing polarization vs electric field (charge vs voltage) "hysteresis loop" and a record-high nonvolatile polarization over 30 000 μC/cm2 at room temperature. The polarization is highly dependent on the period and amplitude of the ac voltage, showing multiple nonvolatile states. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, time-dependent current behavior, disparate resistor response in the dehydrated derivative (CETM)2InCl5, and the negative temperature dependence of ionic conductance support that the memcapacitor behavior of (CETM)2InCl5·H2O stems from irreversible long-range migration of protons. First-principles calculations further confirm this and clarify the microscale mechanism of anisotropic polarization response. Our findings may open up a new avenue for developing memcapacitors by harnessing the benefits of ion migration in organic-inorganic hybrids.

Exploring Cyclic Peptide Nanotube Stability Across Diverse Lipid Bilayers and Unveiling Water Transport Dynamics

Cyclic Peptide Nanotubes (CPNTs) have emerged as compelling candidates for various applications, particularly as nanochannels within lipid bilayers. In this study, the stability of two CPNTs, namely 8 × [(Cys-Gly-Met-Gly)2] and 8 × [(Gly-Leu)4], are comprehensively investigated across different lipid bilayers, including 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), a mixed model membrane (POPE/POPG), and a realistic yeast model membrane. The results demonstrate that both CPNTs maintain their tubular structures in all lipid bilayers, with [(Cys-Gly-Met-Gly)2] showing increased stability over an extended period in these lipid membranes. The insertion of CPNTs shows negligible impact on lipid bilayer properties, including area per lipid, volume per lipid, and bilayer thickness. The study demonstrates that the CPNT preserves its two-line water movement pattern within all the lipid membranes, reaffirming their potential as water channels. The MSD curves further reveal that the dynamics of water molecules inside the nanotube are similar for all the bilayer systems with minor differences that arise due to different lipid environments.

Plausible photomolecular effect leading to water evaporation exceeding the thermal limit

We report in this work several unexpected experimental observations on evaporation from hydrogels under visible light illumination. 1) Partially wetted hydrogels become absorbing in the visible spectral range, where the absorption by both the water and the hydrogel materials is negligible. 2) Illumination of hydrogel under solar or visible-spectrum light-emitting diode leads to evaporation rates exceeding the thermal evaporation limit, even in hydrogels without additional absorbers. 3) The evaporation rates are wavelength dependent, peaking at 520 nm. 4) Temperature of the vapor phase becomes cooler under light illumination and shows a flat region due to breaking-up of the clusters that saturates air. And 5) vapor phase transmission spectra under light show new features and peak shifts. We interpret these observations by introducing the hypothesis that photons in the visible spectrum can cleave water clusters off surfaces due to large electrical field gradients and quadrupole force on molecular clusters. We call the light-induced evaporation process the photomolecular effect. The photomolecular evaporation might be happening widely in nature, potentially impacting climate and plants' growth, and can be exploited for clean water and energy technologies.

Terahertz Spectroscopy of Aqueous Solutions of Sodium Halides (NaX): Self- and Cross-Correlation Contributions of Ions and Hydration Shell Water for X- = F-, Cl-, Br-, and I. We investigated the terahertz (THz) absorption spectra of aqueous sodium halide solutions through molecular dynamics simulations using polarizable models of both water and ions. Specifically, we have considered aqueous solutions (∼1 M) of NaF, NaCl, NaBr, and NaI and calculated the difference THz spectrum of these solutions by subtracting the corresponding pure water contribution from the total THz spectrum of an ionic solution. The difference absorption spectrum of a given solution is then dissected into contributions from ion and ion-water correlations and also modifications of water-water correlations in the presence of the ions. The different components are further decomposed into induced dipole and permanent charge/dipole components and also into self- and cross-correlation components. The ion-water cross-correlation components are subsequently decomposed into contributions coming from different solvation shells through radially resolved calculations of such ion-water cross-correlations. Through all of these dissections, we could investigate the origin of different parts of the difference THz spectra of the sodium halide solutions studied here. It is found that while features below or around 100 cm-1 and also around 200 cm-1 arise mainly from ion and ion-water motion, that at the librational region above 600 cm-1 primarily originates from changes in water librational motion influenced by the ions. The variations of intensities of different components are also linked to the size and charge density of the anions in the solutions.

Thermodynamics perturbation theory for solvation of nonpolar solutes in rose model

A simple model of water, called the rose model, is used in this work. The rose model is a very simple model that can provide insight into the anomalous properties of water. In the rose water model, the molecules are represented as two-dimensional Lennard-Jones disks with potentials for orientation-dependent pairwise interactions mimicking formations of hydrogen bonds. We have recently applied a Wertheim integral equation theory (IET) and a thermodynamic perturbation theory (TPT) to the rose model in bulk. These analytical theories offer the advantage of being computationally less intensive than computer simulations by orders of magnitudes. Here we have applied the TPT to study the transfer of a nonpolar solute into rose water, the so-called hydrophobic effect. Similarly as in our previous work for bulk water, we have found that the theory reproduces the computer simulation results quite well at higher temperatures, while the theories predict the qualitative trends at low temperatures.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Influence of Temperature and Salt on the Dynamic Hydration Layer in a Model Polyzwitterionic Polymer PAEDAPS

We investigate the hydration of poly(3-[2-(acrylamido) ethyldimethylammonio] propanesulfonate) over a range of temperatures in pure water and with the inclusion of 0.1 mol/L NaCl using atomistic molecular dynamics simulation. Drawing on concepts drawn from the field of glass-forming liquids, we use the Debye-Waller parameter () for describing the water mobility gradient around the polybetaine backbone extending to an overall distance ≈18 Å. The water mobility in this layer is defined through the mean-square water molecule displacement at a time on the order of water's β-relaxation time. The brushlike topology of polybetaines leads to two regions in the dynamic hydration layer. The inner region of ≈10.5 Å is explored by pendant group conformational motions, and the outer region of ≈7.5 Å represents an extended layer of reduced water mobility relative to bulk water. The dynamic hydration layer extends far beyond the static hydration layer, adjacent to the polymer.

Simple Model of Liquid Water Dynamics

We develop an analytical statistical-mechanical model to study the dynamic properties of liquid water. In this two-dimensional model, neighboring waters can interact through a hydrogen bond, a van der Waals contact, or an ice-like cage structure or have no interaction. We calculate the diffusion coefficient, viscosity, and thermal conductivity versus temperature and pressure. The trends follow those seen in the water experiments. The model explains that in warm water, heating drives faster diffusion but less interaction, so the viscosity and conductivity decrease. Cooling cold water causes poorer energy exchange because water's ice-like cages are big and immobile and collide infrequently. The main antagonism in water dynamics is not between vdW and H bonds, but it is an interplay between both those pair interactions, multibody cages, and no interaction. The value of this simple model is that it is analytical, so calculations are immediate, and it gives interpretations based on molecular physics.

Mechanism of antifreeze protein functioning and the "anchored clathrate water" concept

In liquid water, there is a natural tendency to form aggregates that consist of water molecules linked by hydrogen bonds. Such spontaneously formed aggregates are surrounded by a "sea" of disordered water molecules, with both forms remaining in equilibrium. The process of creating water aggregates also takes place in the solvation water of proteins, but in this case, the interactions of water molecules with the protein surface shift the equilibrium of the process. In this paper, we analyze the structural properties of the solvation water in antifreeze proteins (AFPs). The results of molecular dynamics analysis with the use of various parameters related to the structure of solvation water on the protein surface are presented. We found that in the vicinity of the active region responsible for the binding of AFPs to ice, the equilibrium is clearly shifted toward the formation of "ice-like aggregates," and the solvation water has a more ordered ice-like structure. We have demonstrated that a reduction in the tendency to create "ice-like aggregates" results in a significant reduction in the antifreeze activity of the protein. We conclude that shifting the equilibrium in favor of the formation of "ice-like aggregates" in the solvation water in the active region is a prerequisite for the biological functionality of AFPs, at least for AFPs having a well-defined ice binding area. In addition, our results fully confirm the validity of the "anchored clathrate water" concept, formulated by Garnham et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 108, 7363 (2011)].

Enhanced Hydrogen Bonds of the (H2O)n (n = 4-8) Clusters Confined in Uranyl Peroxide Cluster Na20(UO2)20(O2)30

Water is a basic resource and an essential component of living organisms. It often exhibits some novel properties under confinement. The water clusters (H₂O)_n (n = 4-8) confined in the cavity of uranyl peroxide cluster Na₂₀(UO₂)₂₀(O₂)₃₀ (U₂₀) have been computationally investigated by using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations in this study. The results show that the confined water clusters can form hydrogen bonds with the internal oxygen atoms (O_uranyl) of U₂₀, and their conformations changed significantly. The average lengths (2.553-2.645 Å) of hydrogen bonds in confined (H₂O)_n are shorter than those (2.731-2.841 Å) in the corresponding free water clusters. Moreover, these confined hydrogen bonds show better hydrogen bond patterns according to the quantified indices. The natural bond orbital (NBO) calculations determine that there is electron transferring from the U₂₀ to its interior (H₂O)_n. It is the main reason for enhancing hydrogen bond interactions among the confined water molecules because their oxygen atoms are more negatively charged and their hydrogen atoms are more positively charged. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and interacting quantum atoms (IQA) analyses indicate that the confined hydrogen bonds are more covalent, based on the significant electron density ρ(r) and local energy density H(r) at the bond critical points (BCPs), and the stronger energies of interatomic exchange interactions (V_xc). These findings may help to promote the communication of confined water clusters and enrich the understating of confined hydrogen bonds.

Preferential Ordering and Organization of Hydration Water Favor Nucleation of Ice by Ice-Nucleating Proteins over Antifreeze Proteins

Bacteria containing ice-nucleating proteins (INPs) evolved in nature to nucleate ice at the high sub-zero ambiance. The ability of the INPs to induce order in the hydration layer and their aggregation propensity appear to be key factors of their ice nucleation abilities. However, the mechanism of the process of ice nucleation by INPs is yet to be understood clearly. Here, we have performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations and analyzed the structure and dynamics of the hydration layer around the proposed ice-nucleating surface of a model INP. Results are compared with the hydration of a topologically similar non-ice-binding protein (non-IBP) and another ice-growth inhibitory antifreeze protein (sbwAFP). We observed that the hydration structure around the ice-nucleating surface of INP is highly ordered and the dynamics of the hydration water are slower, compared to the non-IBP. Even the ordering of the hydration layer is more evident around the ice-binding surface of INP, compared to the antifreeze protein sbwAFP. Particularly with increasing repeat units of INP, we observe an increased population of ice-like water. Interestingly, the distances between the hydroxyl groups of the threonine ladder and its associated channel water of the ice-binding surface (IBS) of INP in the X and Y direction mimic the oxygen atom distances of the basal plane of hexagonal ice. However, the structural synergies between the hydroxyl group distances of the threonine ladder and its associated channel water of the IBS of sbwAFP and oxygen atom distances of the basal plane are less evident. This difference makes the IBS of the INP a better template for ice nucleation than AFP, although both of them bind to the ice surface efficiently.

Ben Naim's four-arm model with density anomaly: Theory and computer simulations

Molecular dynamics, Wertheim's integral equation theory (IET), and thermodynamics perturbation theory (TPT) were used to study the thermodynamics and structure of particles interacting through angle-dependent potential. The particles are modeled as two-dimensional Lennard-Jones disks with four hydrogen bonding arms arranged symmetrically. The model was introduced by Ben-Naim and we call it the BN4 model. The BN4 model exhibits density anomaly and other anomalous properties similar to those in water and in the Mercedes-Benz (MB) model. The IET is based on the orientationally averaged version of the Ornstein-Zernike equation and correctly predicts the pair correlation function of the model at high temperatures. Both TPT and IET are in semiquantitative agreement with the simulation values of the molar volume, isothermal compressibility, thermal expansion coefficient, and heat capacity.

Investigation of Hexylamine Adsorption on Gold in Perchloric Acid

The adsorption of hexylamine at the solution-gold interface in 1 M HClO₄ in the presence of 0.1 M Fe²⁺ and 0.1 Fe³⁺ was studied by potentiodynamic, chronoamperometric and EIS methods. The main kinetic characteristics of the oxidation-reduction reaction iron ions (exchange current density, transfer coefficient, diffusion coefficients of iron ions) were determined. It was shown that the physical adsorption of hexylamine on gold can be described by the Dhar-Flory-Huggins isotherm. The values of the adsorption constant and the Gibbs free adsorption energy were obtained. A comparison of the free adsorption energy at these interfaces with the interaction energies of hexylamine and water molecules, and hexylamine molecules with each other was carried out. It was shown that hexylamine adsorption at all of these interfaces is due mainly to the hydrophobic effect of the interaction of hexylamine and water molecules.

Role of Charge Ordering in the Dynamics of Cluster Formation in Associated Liquids

Liquids are archetypes of disordered systems, yet liquids of polar molecules are locally more ordered than nonpolar molecules, due to the Coulomb interaction based charge ordering phenomenon. Hydrogen bonded liquids, such as water or alcohols, for example, represent a special type of polar liquids, in that they form labile clustered local structures. For water, in particular, hydrogen bonding and the related local tetrahedrality, play an important role in the various attempts to understand this liquid. However, labile structures imply dynamics, and it is not clear how it affects the understanding of this type of liquids from purely static point of view. Herein, we propose to reconsider hydrogen bonding as a charge ordering process. This concept allows us to demonstrate the insufficiency of the analysis of the microscopic structure based solely on static pair correlation functions, and the need for dynamical correlation functions, both in real and reciprocal space. The subsequent analysis allows to recover several aspects of our understanding of hydrogen bonded liquids, but from the charge order perspective. For water, it confirms the jump rotation picture found recently, and it allows to rationalize the contradicting pictures that arise when following the interpretations based on hydrogen bonding. For alcohols, it allows to understand the dynamical origin of the scattering prepeak, which does not exist for water, despite the fact that both these liquids have very similar hydroxyl group chain clusters. The concept of charge ordering complemented by the analysis of dynamical correlation functions appear as a promising way to understand microheterogeneity in complex liquids and mixtures from kinetics point of view.

Accurate calculation of tunneling splittings in water clusters using path-integral based methods

Tunneling splittings observed in molecular rovibrational spectra are significant evidence for tunneling motion of hydrogen nuclei in water clusters. Accurate calculations of the splitting sizes from first principles require a combination of high-quality inter-atomic interactions and rigorous methods to treat the nuclei with quantum mechanics. Many theoretical efforts have been made in recent decades. This Perspective focuses on two path-integral based tunneling splitting methods whose computational cost scales well with the system size, namely, the ring-polymer instanton method and the path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) method. From a simple derivation, we show that the former is a semiclassical approximation to the latter, despite that the two methods are derived very differently. Currently, the PIMD method is considered to be an ideal route to rigorously compute the ground-state tunneling splitting, while the instanton method sacrifices some accuracy for a significantly smaller computational cost. An application scenario of such a quantitatively rigorous calculation is to test and calibrate the potential energy surfaces of molecular systems by spectroscopic accuracy. Recent progress in water clusters is reviewed, and the current challenges are discussed.

Unveiling the role of long-range and short-range forces in the non-productive adsorption between lignin and cellulases at different temperatures

Quantitatively understanding of interaction mechanism between lignin and cellulases is essential for the efficient improvement of lignocellulose enzymatic hydrolysis. However, the individual contribution of multiple forces between lignin and cellulases to the non-productive adsorption of enzymes still remains deeply ambiguous, especially in situations of near enzymatic hydrolysis temperatures. Herein, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and computational simulations were utilized to quantitatively analyze the intermolecular forces between lignin and enzyme at 25 °C and 40 °C. Our results unveiled that an increase in temperature obviously improved adsorption capacity and total intermolecular forces between lignin and cellulases. This positive relationship mainly comes from the increase in the decay length of hydrophobic forces for lignin-cellulases when temperature increases. Different from the hydrophobic interaction which provides long-range part of attractions, van der Waals forces dominate the intermolecular force only at approaches < 2 nm. On the other hand, electrostatic forces exhibited repulsive effects, and its intensity and distance were limited due to the low surface potential of cellulases. Short-range forces including hydrogen bonding (main) and π-π stacking (minor) stabilize the non-specific binding of enzymes to lignin, but increasing temperature reduces hydrogen bond number. Therefore, the relative contribution of long-range forces increased markedly at higher temperatures, which benefits protein capture and brings lignin and cellulase close together. Finally, the structure-activity relationships between lignin physicochemical properties and its inhibitory effect to enzymes indicated that hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and steric effects drive the final adsorption capacity and glucose yields. This work provides quantitative and basic insights into the mechanism of lignin-cellulase interfacial interactions and guides design of saccharification enhancement approaches.

Recent advances in natural small molecules as drug delivery systems

Drug delivery systems (DDSs) are a multidisciplinary approach toward the effective delivery of drugs to their target sites. Natural small molecule (NSM) compounds with anticancer activity, self-assembly and co-assembly functions show great potential for application as novel DDSs in the biomedical field. NSMs are widely sourced, have many modification sites, and readily form hydrogen bonds, π-π interactions, van der Waals interactions, and other non-covalent bonds in solvents, resulting in ordered structures. Moreover, their good biocompatibility and bioactivity allow compositions based on these compounds to be used in life science applications such as tissue engineering, drug delivery and cell imaging, showing the potential medical value of NSMs as DDSs. In this review, we summarise the role, assembly principles and applications of natural products such as triterpenoids, diterpenoids, sterols, alkaloids and polysaccharides in the construction of small molecule systems, which are expected to provide an important reference for the development of more active natural nanomaterials and the study of single or multi-component interactions.

Temperature Dependence of Non-Condon Effects in Two-Dimensional Vibrational Spectroscopy of Water

Non-Condon effects in vibrational spectroscopy refers to the dependence of a molecule's vibrational transition dipole and polarizability on the coordinates of the surrounding environment. Earlier studies have shown that such effects can be pronounced for hydrogen-bonded systems like liquid water. Here, we present a theoretical study of two-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy under the non-Condon and Condon approximations at varying temperatures. We have performed calculations of both two-dimensional infrared and two-dimensional vibrational Raman spectra to gain insights into the temperature dependence of non-Condon effects in nonlinear vibrational spectroscopy. The two-dimensional spectra are calculated for the OH vibration of interest in the isotopic dilution limit where the coupling between the oscillators is ignored. Generally, both the infrared and Raman line shapes undergo red shifts with decrease in temperature due to strengthening of hydrogen bonds and decrease in the fraction of OH modes with weaker or no hydrogen bonds. The infrared line shape is further red-shifted under the non-Condon effects at a given temperature, while the Raman line shape does not show any such red shift due to non-Condon effects. The spectral dynamics becomes slower on decrease of temperature due to slower hydrogen bond relaxation and, for a given temperature, the spectral diffusion occurs at a faster rate upon inclusion of non-Condon effects. The time scales of spectral diffusion extracted from different metrics agree well with each other and also with experiments. The changes in the spectrum due to non-Condon effects are found to be more significant at lower temperatures.

Temperature Dependence of Hydrogen Bond Networks of Liquid Water: Thermodynamic Properties and Structural Heterogeneity from Topological Descriptors

Topological analyses of hydrogen bond networks were performed based on the complex network and island statistics of liquid water at different temperatures. The influence of temperature on the liquid water structures and the topological properties of the hydrogen bond networks was investigated by Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations with the TIP4P/2005 potential model. The bilinear behavior of the second peak in the radial distribution function with the temperature was properly reproduced by these simulations. The average connectivity also displayed a bilinear behavior consistent with being a local descriptor. The semiglobal average path length (or geodesic distance) descriptor showed an unprecedented trimodal distribution, whose areas were dependent on the temperature. Considering equilibrium between these three sets of networks, standard enthalpy and entropy of equilibrium were determined for the first time, providing new insights into the structural heterogeneities of liquid water with interesting perspectives for modeling these quantitative properties of hydrogen bond networks.

Isochores and Heat Capacity of Liquid Water in Terms of the Ion–Molecular Model

Thermodynamics of liquid water in terms of a non-standard approach—the ion–molecular model—is considered. Water is represented as a dense gas of neutral H2O molecules and single charged H3O+ and OH− ions. The molecules and ions perform thermal collisional motion and interconvert due to ion exchange. The energy-rich process—vibrations of an ion in a hydration shell of molecular dipoles—well known to spectroscopists with its dielectric response at 180 cm−1 (5 THz), is suggested to be key for water dynamics. Taking into account this ion–molecular oscillator, we compose an equation of state of liquid water to obtain analytical expressions for the isochores and heat capacity.

Influence of salt and temperature on the self-assembly of cyclic peptides in water: a molecular dynamics study

It is found in the literature that cyclic peptides (CPs) are able to self-assemble in water to form cyclic peptide nanotubes (CPNTs) and are used extensively in the field of nanotechnology. Several factors influence the formation and stability of these nanotubes in water. However, an extensive study of the contribution of several important factors is still lacking. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of temperature and salt (NaCl) on the association tendency of CPs. Furthermore, the self-association behavior of CPs in aqueous solutions at various temperatures is also thoroughly discussed. Cyclo-[(Asp-D-Leu-Lys-D-Leu)₂] is considered for this study and a series of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at three different temperatures, viz. 280 K, 300 K, and 320 K, both in pure water and in NaCl solutions of different concentrations are carried out. The calculations of radial distribution functions, preferential interaction parameters, cluster formation and hydrogen bonding properties suggest a strong influence of NaCl concentration on the association propensity of CPs. Low NaCl concentration hinders CP association while high NaCl concentration facilitates the association of CPs. Besides this, the association of CPs is found to be enhanced at low temperature. Furthermore, the thermodynamics of CP association is predominantly found to be enthalpy driven in both the presence and absence of salt. No crossover between enthalpy and entropy in CP association is observed. In addition, the MM-GBSA method is used to investigate the binding free energies of the CP rings that self-assembled to form nanotube like structures at all three temperatures.

The electric field changes the anomalous properties of the Mercedes Benz water model

The influence of a homogeneous constant electric field on water properties was assessed. We used a simple two-dimensional statistical mechanical model called the Mercedes-Benz (MB) model of water in the study. The MB water molecules are two-dimensional disks with Gaussian arms that mimic the formation of hydrogen bonds. The model is modified with added charges for interaction with the electric field. The influence of the strength of the electric field on the water's properties was studied using Monte Carlo simulations. The structure and thermodynamics of the water were determined as a function of the strength of the electric field. We observed that the properties and phase transitions of the water in the low strength electric field does not change. In contrast, the high strength electric field shifts boiling and melting points as well as the position of the density maxima. After further increasing the strength of the electric field the density anomaly disappears.

Elucidating the Sluggish Water Dynamics at the Ice-Binding Surface of the Hyperactive Tenebrio molitor Antifreeze Protein

Quasi-ice-like hydration waters on the ice-binding surface (IBS) of an antifreeze protein (AFP) commonly exhibit sluggish dynamics especially at low temperatures. In this work, we have analyzed molecular dynamics (MD) simulation trajectories at two different temperatures for Tenebrio molitor antifreeze protein (TmAFP) to explore whether the unique quasi-ice-like structuring of hydration water has any impact on making their dynamics slower on the IBS of the protein. Our calculation reveals that, as translational dynamics is coupled with the conformational fluctuations, hydration water on the IBS exhibits sluggish translational motion due to reduced flexibility of the IBS compared to that on the non-ice-binding surface (NIBS) of the protein. Interestingly, it is noticed that rotational motion of hydration water is not coupled with the conformational fluctuations of the surfaces. In that case, structural relaxations of the protein-water (PW) and water-water (WW) hydrogen bonds compete with each other to make the rotational dynamics of hydration water around the IBS either faster or slower with respect to those around the NIBS. At low temperature, the slower structural relaxation of water-water hydrogen bonds dominates and imparts sluggish rotational motion of the hydration water on the IBS of the protein. The slower structural relaxation of water-water hydrogen bonds and hence the retarded rotational dynamics, despite the weak short-lived PW hydrogen bonds on the IBS, is clearly a manifestation of the rigid quasi-ice-like structure of the hydration shell on that surface.

On the Choice of Different Water Model in Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Nanopore Transport Phenomena

The water transport through nanoporous multilayered graphene at 300k is investigated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation with different water models in this study. We used functionalized and non-functionalized membranes along with five different 3-point rigid water models: SPC (simple point charge), SPC/E (extended simple point charge), TIP3P-FB (transferable intermolecular potential with 3 points-Force Balance), TIP3P-EW (transferable intermolecular potential with 3 points with Ewald summation) and OPC3 (3-point optimal point charge) water models. Based on our simulations with two water reservoirs and a porous multilayered graphene membrane in-between them, it is evident that the water transport varies significantly depending on the water model used, which is in good agreement with previous works. This study contributes to the selection of a water model for molecular dynamics simulations of water transport through multilayered porous graphene.

Improving Condensed-Phase Water Dynamics with Explicit Nuclear Quantum Effects: The Polarizable Q-AMOEBA Force Field

We introduce a new parametrization of the AMOEBA polarizable force field for water denoted Q-AMOEBA, for use in simulations that explicitly account for nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). This study is made possible thanks to the recently introduced adaptive Quantum Thermal Bath (adQTB) simulation technique which computational cost is comparable to classical molecular dynamics. The flexible Q-AMOEBA model conserves the initial AMOEBA functional form, with an intermolecular potential including an atomic multipole description of electrostatic interactions (up to quadrupole), a polarization contribution based on the Thole interaction model and a buffered 14-7 potential to model van der Waals interactions. It has been obtained by using a ForceBalance fitting strategy including high-level quantum chemistry reference energies and selected condensed-phase properties targets. The final Q-AMOEBA model is shown to accurately reproduce both gas-phase and condensed-phase properties, notably improving the original AMOEBA water model. This development allows the fine study of NQEs on water liquid phase properties such as the average H-O-H angle compared to its gas-phase equilibrium value, isotope effects, and so on. Q-AMOEBA also provides improved infrared spectroscopy prediction capabilities compared to AMOEBA03. Overall, we show that the impact of NQEs depends on the underlying model functional form and on the associated strength of hydrogen bonds. Since adQTB simulations can be performed at near classical computational cost using the Tinker-HP package, Q-AMOEBA can be extended to organic molecules, proteins, and nucleic acids opening the possibility for the large-scale study of the importance of NQEs in biophysics.

Multiple insights call for revision of modern thermodynamic models to account for structural fluctuations in water

Modern thermodynamic models incorporate the concept of association (hydrogen bonding) and they can describe very satisfactorily many properties of water containing mixtures. They have not been successful in representing water's anomalous properties and this work provides a possible explanation. We have analyzed and interpreted recent experimental data, molecular simulation results, and two-state theory approaches and compared against the predictions from thermodynamic models. We show that the dominance of the tetrahedral structure implemented in modern thermodynamic models may be the reason for their failure for describing water systems. While this study does not prove the two-state theories for water, it indicates that a high level of tetrahedral structure of water is not in agreement with water's anomalous properties when used in thermodynamic models.

Water Adsorption on Mica Surfaces with Hydrophilicity Tuned by Counterion Types (Na, K, and Cs) and Structural Fluorination

The stability of adsorbed water films on mineral surfaces has far-reaching implications in the Earth, environmental, and materials sciences. Here, we use the basal plane of phlogopite mica, an atomically smooth surface of a natural mineral, to investigate water film structure and stability as a function of two features that modulate surface hydrophilicity: the type of adsorbed counterions (Na, K, and Cs) and the substitution of structural OH groups by F atoms. We use molecular dynamics simulations combined with in situ high-resolution X-ray reflectivity to examine surface hydration over a range of water loadings, from the adsorption of isolated water molecules to the formation of clusters and films. We identify four regimes characterized by distinct adsorption energetics and different sensitivities to cation type and mineral fluorination: from 0 to 0.5 monolayer film thickness, the hydration of adsorbed ions; from 0.5 to 1 monolayer, the hydration of uncharged regions of the siloxane surface; from 1 to 1.5 monolayer, the attachment of isolated water molecules on the surface of the first monolayer; and for >1.5 monolayer, the formation of an incipient electrical double layer at the mineral-water interface.

Correlated Local Fluctuations in the Hydrogen Bond Network of Liquid Water

The hypothesis that liquid water can separate into two phases in the supercooled state has been supported by recent experimental and theoretical studies. However, whether such structural inhomogeneity extends to ambient conditions is under intense debate. Due to the dynamic nature of the hydrogen bond network of liquid water, exploring its structure requires detailed insight into the collective motion of neighboring water molecules, a missing link that has not been examined so far. Here, highly sensitive quantum mechanical calculations detect that the time evolution of nearby hydrogen bonds is strongly correlated, revealing a direct mechanism for the appearance of short-range structural fluctuations in the hydrogen bond network of liquid water for the first time. This correlated dynamics is found to be closely connected to the static structural picture. The distortions from the tetrahedral structure do not occur independently but are correlated due to the preference of nearby donors and acceptors to be in similar environments. The existence of such cooperative fluctuations is further supported by the temperature dependence of the local structural evolution and explained by conventional analysis of localized orbitals. It was found that such correlated structural fluctuations are only observed on a short length scale in simulations at ambient conditions. The correlations of the nearby hydrogen bond pairs of liquid water unveiled here are expected to offer a new insight into connecting the dynamics of individual water molecules and the local structure of the hydrogen bond network.

Exploring Heterogeneous Dynamical Environment around an Ensemble of Aβ42 Peptide Monomer Conformations

Exploring the conformational properties of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides and the role of solvent (water) in guiding the dynamical environment at their interfaces is crucial for microscopic understanding of Aβ misfolding, which is involved in causing the most common neurodegenerative disorder, i.e., Alzheimer's disease. While numerous studies in the past have emphasized examining the conformational states of Aβ peptides, the role of water has not received much attention. Here, we have performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of several full-length Aβ₄₂ peptide monomers with different initial configurations. Our efforts are directed toward probing the origin of the heterogeneous dynamics of water around various segments of the Aβ peptide, identified as the two terminal segments (N-term and C-term) and the two hydrophobic segments (hp1 and hp2), along with the central turn region interconnecting hp1 and hp2. Our results revealed that water hydrating hp1, hp2, and turn (nonterminal segments) and C-term segments exhibit nonuniformly restricted translational as well as rotational motions. The degree of such restriction has been found to be correlated with the hydrogen bond relaxation time scales at the interface. Importantly, it is revealed that the water molecules around hp1 and, to some extent, around hp2, form relatively rigid hydration layers, compared to that around the other segments. Such rigid hydration layers arise due to relatively more solid-like caging motions resulting in relatively lesser hydration entropy. As hp1 and hp2 have been demonstrated to play a central role in Aβ aggregation, we believe that distinct water dynamics in the vicinity of these two segments, as outlined in this study, can provide vital information in understanding the early stages of the onset of the aggregation process of such peptides at higher concentration that can further aid toward advances in AD therapeutics.

The chaotropic effect of ions on the self-aggregating propensity of Whitlock's molecular tweezers

Molecular tweezers feature the first class of artificial receptors to pique the interest of researchers and emerge as an effective therapeutic candidate. The exceptional structure and exquisite binding specificity of tweezers establish this overall class of receptors as a promising tool, with abundant applications. However, their inclination to self-aggregate by mutual π-π stacking interactions of their aromatic arms diminishes their efficacy as a therapeutic candidate. Therefore, following up on sporadic studies, since the discovery of the Hofmeister series, on the ability of ions to either solvate (salting-in) or induce aggregation (salting-out) of hydrophobic solutes, the notions of ion-specificity effects are utilized on tweezer moieties. The impacts of three different aluminum salts bearing anions Cl^-, ClO₄^- and SCN^- on the self-association propensity of Whitlock's caffeine-pincered molecular tweezers are investigated, with a specific emphasis placed on elucidating the varied behavior of the ions on the hydration ability of tweezers. The comparative investigation is conducted employing a series of all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of five tweezer molecules in pure water and three salt solutions, at two different concentrations each, maintaining a temperature of 300 K and a pressure of 1 atm, respectively. Radial distribution functions, coordination numbers, and SASA calculations display a steady reduction in the aggregation proclivity of the receptor molecules with an increase in salt concentration, as progressed along the Hofmeister series. Orientational preferences between the tweezer arms reveal a disruptive effect in the regular π-π stacking interactions, in the presence of high concentrations of ClO₄^- and SCN^- ions, while preferential interactions and tetrahedral order parameters unveil the underlying mechanism, by which the anions alter the solubility of the hydrophobic molecules. Overall, it is observed that SCN^- exhibits the highest salting-in effect, followed by ClO₄^-, with both anions inhibiting tweezer aggregation through different mechanisms. ClO₄^- ions impart an effect by moderately interacting with the solute molecules as well as modifying the water structure of the bulk solution promoting solvation, whereas, SCN^- ions engage entirely in interaction with specific tweezer sites. Cl^- being the most charge-dense of the three anionic species experiences stronger hydration and therefore, imparts a very negligible salting-in effect.

Thermodynamics of hydrogels for applications in atmospheric water harvesting, evaporation, and desalination

Most thermodynamic modeling of hydrogels is built on Flory's theories for the entropy of mixing and rubber elasticity, and Donnan's equilibrium conditions if polyelectrolyte polymer and mobile ions are involved. The entropy of mixing depends on the number of solvent and polymer molecules while the configurational entropy depends on the volume the polymer occupied. Flory's theory treated these two entropy terms in the Gibbs free energy on an equal basis: using the molecular numbers as the variable. I argue that the molecular number and volume are two independent thermodynamic variables and reformulate Flory's classical hydrogel thermodynamic model by minimizing the Helmholtz free energy of a combined system consisting of the hydrogel and its environment. This treatment enables us to unequivocally state that the osmotic pressure is the thermodynamic pressure of the solvent inside the hydrogel and to unambiguously write down the chemical potential of each species. The balance of the chemical potentials of the mobile species, including both the solvent and the mobile ions gives a set of equations that can be simultaneously used to solve for the equilibrium volume of the hydrogel, the osmotic pressure, and the Donnan potential, including their coupling. The model is used to study the thermodynamic properties of both pure and salty water in non-electrolyte and electrolyte hydrogels such as (1) the latent heat of evaporation, (2) the ability of hydrogels to retain water and to absorb water from the atmosphere, (3) the use of hydrogels for desalination via solar or forward osmosis, (4) the antifouling characteristics of hydrogels, and (5) melting point suppression and boiling point elevation, and solubility of salts in hydrogels. These properties are of interest in solar-driven interfacial water evaporation for desalination and wastewater treatment, atmospheric water harvesting, and forward osmosis. The reformulated thermodynamic framework will also be useful for understanding polymer electrolytes and ion transport in electrochemical and biological systems.

Connection between water's dynamical and structural properties: Insights from ab initio simulations

SignificanceFirst-principles calculations, which explicitly account for the electronic structure of matter, can shed light on the molecular structure and dynamics of water in its supercooled state. In this work, we use density functional theory, which relies on a functional to describe electronic exchange and correlations, to evaluate which functional best describes the temperature evolution of bulk water transport coefficients. We also assess the validity of the Stokes-Einstein relation for all the functionals in the temperature range studied, and explore the link between structure and dynamics. Based on these results, we show how transport coefficients can be computed from structural descriptors, which require shorter simulation times to converge, and we point toward strategies to develop better functionals.
