Female control of male reproductive function in a Mexican Snake

Evolutionary insights into the regulation of courtship behavior in male amphibians and reptiles

Comparative studies of species differences and similarities in the regulation of courtship behavior afford an understanding of evolutionary pressures and constraints shaping reproductive processes and the relative contributions of hormonal, genetic, and ecological factors. Here, we review species differences and similarities in the control of courtship and copulatory behaviors in male amphibians and reptiles, focusing on the role of sex steroid hormones, the neurohormone arginine vasotocin (AVT), and catecholamines. We discuss species differences in the sensory modalities used during courtship and in the neural correlates of these differences, as well as the value of particular model systems for neural evolution studies with regard to reproductive processes. For example, in some genera of amphibians (e.g., Ambystoma) and reptiles (e.g., Cnemidophorus), interspecific hybridizations occur, making it possible to compare the ancestral with the descendant species, and these systems provide a window into the process of behavioral and neural evolution as well as the effect of genome size. Though our understanding of the hormonal and neural correlates of mating behavior in a variety of amphibian and reptilian species has advanced substantially, more studies that manipulate hormone or neurotransmitter systems are required to assess the functions of these systems.

Alterations in gonadotropin-releasing hormone immunoactivities in discrete brain areas of male goldfish during spawning behavior

In male goldfish, spawning behavior and gonadotropin (GtH) secretion are stimulated during exposure to females which were induced to perform spawning behavior by treatment with prostaglandin F2 alpha (PG). In this study, exposure to PG-treated females for 1 or 2 h significantly increased serum GtH levels, and GtH-releasing hormone (GnRH) concentrations in the olfactory bulbs, telencephalon and hypothalamus, indicating that spawning behavior can influence cellular events of the brain GnRH neuronal system and pituitary GtH secretion in male goldfish. To study the role of the olfactory system in the hormonal responses to PG-treated females, bilateral sectioning of olfactory tracts (OTX), medial (mOTX) or lateral (lOTX) olfactory tract were carried out in male goldfish. Both OTX and mOTX, but not lOTX, blocked the behavioral response of male goldfish to PG-treated females and abolished the increases in serum GtH and brain GnRH levels, suggesting that alterations in pituitary GtH secretion and brain GnRH levels are associated with a pheromonal activation of spawning behavior through the medial olfactory tracts in male goldfish. This behavioral activation of the GnRH neuronal system provides a useful physiological model for studying the regulation of GnRH system in male goldfish.

Behavioral facilitation of reproduction in sexual and unisexual whiptail lizards

All-female, parthenogenetic species afford a unique test of hypotheses regarding the nature and evolution of sexuality. Mating behavior accomplishes the transfer of gametes and stimulates the coordination of reproductive activity of the male and female. Cnemidophorus uniparens, a parthenogenetic species, is believed to have resulted from the hybridization of two extant gonochoristic species, Cnemidophorus inornatus and Cnemidophorus gularis. C. uniparens regularly and reliably perform behaviors identical in form to those performed during mating by male C. inornatus. We have determined experimentally that individuals of the parthenogenetic species demonstrating male-like pseudosexual behavior also share a similarity in function with males of the sexually reproducing species. The number of female C. inornatus ovulating increases, and the latency to ovulation decreases, if a sexually active conspecific male is present. A similar facilitatory effect on ovarian recrudescence occurs in the all-female C. uniparens in the presence of a male-like individual. These results show that behavioral facilitation of ovarian recrudescence is important in sexual and unisexual species. This may represent a potent selection pressure favoring the maintenance of male-typical behaviors, thus accounting for the display of behavioral traits usually associated with males in unisexual species of hybrid origin.

Ovarian development in red-sided garter snakes, Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis: relationship to mating

Female red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) exhibit a complex array of behavioral patterns. Females may mate once, more than once, or not at all in the spring of the year, and a high percentage of females may mate in late summer before returning to winter hibernacula. The role of mating in the induction of ovarian growth in this species is complicated by this pattern of spring and late summer mating. Females hibernated in the laboratory that mate on emergence in the spring exhibit higher frequencies of ovarian recrudescence than females that do not mate when exposed to males. Yet neither male courtship nor mating in the spring is required for ovarian development. However, mated and unmated females collected in the field in the spring of the year do not differ in frequencies of ovarian recrudescence. Ovarian growth in unmated females collected in the spring parallels the incidence of mating in the previous late summer. Thus, mating may influence the initiation of ovarian growth, but the effect can occur immediately (from spring mating) or be stored over winter (from late summer mating). Large year-to-year variation in reproductive rates of female red-sided garter snakes suggests that other factors such as nutrition and stored energy reserves may modify the effects of mating on ovarian growth.

Gamete production, sex hormone secretion, and mating behavior uncoupled

A common observation for seasonally breeding vertebrates is that the reproductive processes of gamete production, sex steroid hormone secretion, and mating behavior coincide, and further, that sex steroid hormones activate mating behavior. The postulate of hormone-dependence of mating behavior is based primarily on detailed studies of laboratory and domesticated species. However, comparison of a wide array of vertebrates reveals numerous exceptions to this supposed rule. Consideration of these species indicates that there is no fixed or intrinsic causal association among gamete production, sex hormone secretion, and mating behavior within any of the classes of vertebrates.

Hormonal independence of courtship behavior in the male garter snake

Garter snakes exhibit a dissociated reproductive tactic in which gonadal activity is minimal at the time of mating, increasing only after the breeding season has ended. Experiments are presented demonstrating that neither short-term nor longterm castration affects courtship behavior in adult male red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis). So long as males have passed through a low-temperature dormancy period (hibernation), castration either shortly after emergence in the spring, or before entering winter dormancy in the fall, does not prevent the display of intense courtship behavior on emergence. Similarly, males castrated during mating activity the previous spring prior to the annual testicular growth phase actively courted females on emergence from hibernation. Males adrenalectomized and castrated during low-temperature dormancy also courted females on emergence. Hypophysectomy during or before low-temperature dormancy did not prevent males from displaying high-intensity courtship behavior on emergence from hibernation. Treatment with sex steroid hormones, as well as hypothalamic and pituitary hormones, and a variety of neural and metabolic affectors also fails to elicit courtship behavior in noncourting males during the summer. It was concluded that causal mechanisms controlling courtship behavior in the red-sided garter snake are fundamentally different, at least at the physiological level, from those mechanisms described for many laboratory and domesticated species.

Metabolic changes in male snakes, Thamnophis melanogaster, during a breeding period

1. Daily basking periods were lengthened substantially during a breeding period in a natural population of the snake, Thamnophis melanogaster. 2. In the laboratory, oxygen consumption of male T. melanogaster significantly increased during a breeding period, compared to pre- and post-breeding levels in the same males. 3. In both laboratory and field males, serum lipid increased initially and then decreased during the breeding period. 4. Serum protein of laboratory males decreased significantly following the breeding period. 5. Serum glucose did not change significantly in laboratory males, but increased significantly during the breeding period in field males. 6. Changes in oxygen consumption and nutrient distribution may reflect changing energy demands attendant with gonadal recrudescence in this snake.
