Abstract
Microbiomes provide multiple life-support functions for plants, including nutrient acquisition and tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses. Considering the importance of C4 cereal and biofuel crops for food security under climate change conditions, more attention has been given recently to C4 plant microbiome assembly and functions. Here, we review the current status of C4 cereal and biofuel crop microbiome research with a focus on beneficial microbial traits for crop growth and health. We highlight the importance of environmental factors and plant genetics in C4 crop microbiome assembly and pinpoint current knowledge gaps. Finally, we discuss the potential of foxtail millet as a C4 model species and outline future perspectives of C4 plant microbiome research.

Abstract
In this study, 20-day-old soybean plants were watered with 100 mL of 100 mM NaCl solution and sprayed with silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) or potassium silicate every 3 days over 15 days, with a final dosage of 12 mg of SiO2 per plant. We assessed the alterations in the plant's growth and physiological traits, and the responses of bacterial microbiome within the leaf endosphere, rhizosphere, and root endosphere. The result showed that the type of silicon did not significantly impact most of the plant parameters. However, the bacterial communities within the leaf and root endospheres had a stronger response to SiO2 NPs treatment, showing enrichment of 24 and 13 microbial taxa, respectively, compared with the silicate treatment, which led to the enrichment of 9 and 8 taxonomic taxa, respectively. The rhizosphere bacterial communities were less sensitive to SiO2 NPs, enriching only 2 microbial clades, compared to the 8 clades enriched by silicate treatment. Furthermore, SiO2 NPs treatment enriched beneficial genera, such as Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Variovorax in the leaf and root endosphere, likely enhancing plant growth and salinity stress resistance. These findings highlight the potential of SiO2 NPs for foliar application in sustainable farming by enhancing plant-microbe interactions to improve salinity tolerance.

Abstract
The root-associated microbiota plays an important role in the response to environmental stress. However, the underlying mechanisms controlling the interaction between salt-stressed plants and microbiota are poorly understood. Here, by focusing on a salt-tolerant plant wild soybean (Glycine soja), we demonstrate that highly conserved microbes dominated by Pseudomonas are enriched in the root and rhizosphere microbiota of salt-stressed plant. Two corresponding Pseudomonas isolates are confirmed to enhance the salt tolerance of wild soybean. Shotgun metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing reveal that motility-associated genes, mainly chemotaxis and flagellar assembly, are significantly enriched and expressed in salt-treated samples. We further find that roots of salt stressed plants secreted purines, especially xanthine, which induce motility of the Pseudomonas isolates. Moreover, exogenous application for xanthine to non-stressed plants results in Pseudomonas enrichment, reproducing the microbiota shift in salt-stressed root. Finally, Pseudomonas mutant analysis shows that the motility related gene cheW is required for chemotaxis toward xanthine and for enhancing plant salt tolerance. Our study proposes that wild soybean recruits beneficial Pseudomonas species by exudating key metabolites (i.e., purine) against salt stress.

Abstract
As carriers of direct contact between plants and the atmospheric environment, the microbiomes of phyllosphere microorganisms are increasingly recognized as an important area of study. Salt secretion triggered by salt-secreting halophytes elicits changes in the community structure and functions of phyllosphere microorganisms, and often provides positive feedback to the individual plant/community environment. In this study, the contents of Na+ and K+ in the rhizosphere, plant and phyllosphere of Tamarix chinensis were increased under 200 mmol/L NaCl stress. The increase in electrical conductivity, Na+ and K+ in the phyllosphere not only decreased the diversity of bacterial and fungal communities, but also decreased the relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Basidiomycota. Influenced by electrical conductivity and Na+, the bacteria-fungus co-occurrence network under salt stress has higher complexity. Changes in the structure of the phyllosphere microbial community further resulted in a significant increase in the relative abundance of the bacterial energy source and fungal pathotrophic groups. The relative abundance of Actinobacteriota and Acidobacteriota in rhizosphere showed a decreasing trend under salt stress, while the complexity of the rhizosphere co-occurrence network was higher than that of the control. In addition, the relative abundances of functional groups of rhizosphere bacteria in the carbon cycle and phosphorus cycle increased significantly under stress, and were significantly correlated with electrical conductivity and Na+. This study investigated the effects of salinity on the structure and physicochemical properties of phyllosphere and rhizosphere microbial communities of halophytes, and highlights the role of phyllosphere microbes as ecological indicators in plant responses to stressful environments.

Abstract
Salinity poses a significant threat to plant growth and development. The root microbiota plays a key role in plant adaptation to saline environments. Nevertheless, it remains poorly understood whether and how perennial grass plants accumulate specific root-derived bacteria when exposed to salinity. Here, we systematically analyzed the composition and variation of rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria, as well as root exudates in perennial ryegrass differing in salt tolerance grown in unsterilized soils with and without salt. Both salt-sensitive (P1) and salt-tolerant (P2) perennial ryegrass genotypes grew better in unsterilized soils compared to sterilized soils under salt stress. The rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria of both P1 and P2 had lower alpha-diversity under salt treatment compared to control. The reduction of alpha-diversity was more pronounced for P1 than for P2. The specific root-derived bacteria, particularly the genus Pseudomonas, were enriched in rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria under salt stress. Changes in bacterial functionality induced by salt stress differed in P1 and P2. Additionally, more root exudates were altered under salt stress in P2 than in P1. The content of important root exudates, mainly including phenylpropanoids, benzenoids, organic acids, had a significantly positive correlation with the abundance of rhizosphere and endophytic bacteria under salt stress. The results indicate that the interactions between root-derived bacteria and root exudates are crucial for the salt tolerance of perennial ryegrass, which provides a potential strategy to manipulate root microbiome for improved stress tolerance of perennial grass species.

Abstract
Rhizosphere microbiomes play an important role in enhancing plant salt tolerance and are also commonly employed as bio-inoculants in soil remediation processes. Cultivated soybean (Glycine max) is one of the major oilseed crops with moderate salt tolerance. However, the response of rhizosphere microbes me to salt stress in soybean, as well as their potential application in saline soil reclamation, has been rarely reported. In this study, we first investigated the microbial communities of salt-treated and non-salt-treated soybean by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Then, the potential mechanism of rhizosphere microbes in enhancing the salt tolerance of soybean was explored based on physiological analyses and transcriptomic sequencing. Our results suggested that Ensifer and Novosphingobium were biomarkers in salt-stressed soybean. One corresponding strain, Ensifer sp. GMS14, showed remarkable growth promoting characteristics. Pot experiments showed that GMS14 significantly improved the growth performance of soybean in saline soils. Strain GMS14 alleviated sodium ions (Na+) toxicity by maintaining low a Na+/K+ ratio and promoted nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) uptake by soybean in nutrient-deficient saline soils. Transcriptome analyses indicated that GMS14 improved plant salt tolerance mainly by ameliorating salt stress-mediated oxidative stress. Interestingly, GMS14 was evidenced to specifically suppress hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production to maintain reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis in plants under salt stress. Field experiments with GMS14 applications showed its great potential in saline soil reclamation, as evidenced by the increased biomass and nodulation capacity of GMS14-inoculated soybean. Overall, our findings provided valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying plant-microbes interactions, and highlighted the importance of microorganisms recruited by salt-stressed plant in the saline soil reclamation.

Abstract
Different microorganisms can produce different proteases, which can adapt to different industrial requirements such as pH, temperature, and pressure. Salt-tolerant proteases (STPs) from microorganisms exhibit higher salt tolerance, wider adaptability, and more efficient catalytic ability under extreme conditions compared to conventional proteases. These unique enzymes hold great promise for applications in various industries including food, medicine, environmental protection, agriculture, detergents, dyes, and others. Scientific studies on microbial-derived STPs have been widely reported, but there has been little systematic review of microbial-derived STPs and their application in high-salt conventional soybean fermentable foods. This review presents the STP-producing microbial species and their selection methods, and summarizes and analyzes the salt tolerance mechanisms of the microorganisms. It also outlines various techniques for the isolation and purification of STPs from microorganisms and discusses the salt tolerance mechanisms of STPs. Furthermore, this review demonstrates the contribution of modern biotechnology in the screening of novel microbial-derived STPs and their improvement in salt tolerance. It highlights the potential applications and commercial value of salt-tolerant microorganisms and STPs in high-salt traditional soy fermented foods. The review ends with concluding remarks on the challenges and future directions for microbial-derived STPs. This review provides valuable insights into the separation, purification, performance enhancement, and application of microbial-derived STPs in traditional fermented foods.

Abstract
Developing and planting salt-tolerant plants has become a promising way to utilize saline-alkali land resources and ensure food security. Root-associated microbes of salt-tolerant plants have been shown to promote plant growth and alleviate high salt stress, yet very little is known about the salt resistance mechanisms of core microbes in different niches. This study characterized the microbial community structures, assembly processes, and functional profiles in four root-related compartments of two salt-tolerant plants by amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing. The results showed that both plants significantly altered the microbial community structure of saline soils, with greater microbial alpha diversity in the rhizosphere or rhizoplane compared with bulk soils. Stochastic process dominated the microbial assembly processes, and the impact was stronger in Suaeda salsa than in S. glauca, indicating that S. salsa may have stronger resistance abilities to changing soil properties. Keystone species, such as Pseudomonas in the endosphere of S. glauca and Sphingomonas in the endosphere of S. salsa, which may play key roles in helping plants alleviate salt stress, were identified by using microbial co-occurrence network analysis. Furthermore, the microbiomes in the rhizoplane soils had more abundant genes involved in promoting growth of plants and defending against salt stress than those in bulk soils, especially in salt-tolerant S. salsa. Moreover, microbes in the rhizoplane of S. salsa exhibited higher functional diversities, with notable enrichment of genes involved in carbon fixation, dissimilar nitrate reduction to ammonium, and sulfite oxidation. These findings revealed differences and similarities in the microbial community assembly, functional profiles and keystone species closely related to salt alleviation of the two salt-tolerant plants. Overall, our study provides new insights into the ecological functions and varied strategies of rhizosphere microbes in different plants under salt stress and highlights the potential use of keystone microbes for enhancing salt resistance of plants.

Abstract
Plants adapted to challenging environments offer fascinating models of evolutionary change. Importantly, they also give information to meet our pressing need to develop resilient, low-input crops. With mounting environmental fluctuation-including temperature, rainfall, and soil salinity and degradation-this is more urgent than ever. Happily, solutions are hiding in plain sight: the adaptive mechanisms from natural adapted populations, once understood, can then be leveraged. Much recent insight has come from the study of salinity, a widespread factor limiting productivity, with estimates of 20% of all cultivated lands affected. This is an expanding problem, given increasing climate volatility, rising sea levels, and poor irrigation practices. We therefore highlight recent benchmark studies of ecologically adaptive salt tolerance in plants, assessing macro- and microevolutionary mechanisms, and the recently recognized role of ploidy and the microbiome on salinity adaptation. We synthesize insight specifically on naturally evolved adaptive salt-tolerance mechanisms, as these works move substantially beyond traditional mutant or knockout studies, to show how evolution can nimbly "tweak" plant physiology to optimize function. We then point to future directions to advance this field that intersect evolutionary biology, abiotic-stress tolerance, breeding, and molecular plant physiology.

Abstract
Soil salinization is a serious global environmental problem affecting sustainable development of agriculture. Legumes are excellent candidates for the phytoremediation of saline soils; however, how soil microbes mediate the amelioration of coastal saline ecosystems is unknown. In this study, two salt-tolerant legumes, Glycine soja and Sesbania cannabina were planted in coastal saline soil for three years. Soil nutrient availability and microbiota structure (including bacteria, fungi, and diazotrophs) were compared between the phytoremediated soils and control soil (barren land). Planting legumes reduced soil salinity, and increased total carbon, total nitrogen, and NO3--N contents. Among the soil microbiota, some nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., Azotobacter) were enriched in legumes, which were probably responsible for soil nitrogen accumulation. The complexity of the bacterial, fungal, and diazotrophic networks increased significantly from the control to the phytoremediated soils, suggesting that the soil microbial community formed closer ecological interactions during remediation. Furthermore, the dominant microbial functions were chemoheterotrophy (24.75%) and aerobic chemoheterotrophy (21.97%) involved in the carbon cycle, followed by nitrification (13.68%) and aerobic ammonia oxidation (13.34%) involved in the nitrogen cycle. Overall, our findings suggested that G. soja and S. cannabina legumes were suitable for ameliorating saline soils as they decreased soil salinity and increased soil nutrient content, with microorganisms especially nitrogen-fixing bacteria, playing an important role in this remediation process.

Abstract
This review evaluates oilseed crop soybean endophytic bacteria, their prospects, and challenges for sustainable agriculture. Soybean is one of the most important oilseed crops with about 20-25% protein content and 20% edible oil production. The ability of soybean root-associated microbes to restore soil nutrients enhances crop yield. Naturally, the soybean root endosphere harbors root nodule bacteria, and endophytic bacteria, which help increase the nitrogen pool and reclamation of another nutrient loss in the soil for plant nutrition. Endophytic bacteria can sustain plant growth and health by exhibiting antibiosis against phytopathogens, production of enzymes, phytohormone biosynthesis, organic acids, and secondary metabolite secretions. Considerable effort in the agricultural industry is focused on multifunctional concepts and bioprospecting on the use of bioinput from endophytic microbes to ensure a stable ecosystem. Bioprospecting in the case of this review is a systemic overview of the biorational approach to harness beneficial plant-associated microbes to ensure food security in the future. Progress in this endeavor is limited by available techniques. The use of molecular techniques in unraveling the functions of soybean endophytic bacteria can explore their use in integrated organic farming. Our review brings to light the endophytic microbial dynamics of soybeans and current status of plant microbiome research for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
It is of great significance to explore the structure and salinity response of microbial communities in salt-tolerant plants to understand the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions. Herein, we investigated the phyllosphere and rhizosphere microbial communities of Avicennia marina, a pioneer salt-tolerant plant, at three sites with different salinities in the coastal intertidal zone. The results showed that salinity had different effects on phyllosphere and rhizosphere microbial communities and had a greater impact on bacterial communities and bacterial network interactions. The rhizosphere bacterial community alpha diversity significantly increased with increasing salinity. Moreover, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria decreased significantly, while that of Bacteroidota and Actinobacteriota, with stronger salt tolerance and nutrient utilization capacity, increased significantly. Functional prediction indicated that the microbial communities could produce catalase, peroxidase, 3-phytase, and tryptophan synthase, which may exert potential antistress and growth-promoting functions. Among them, catalase, 3-phytase, alkaline phosphatase, and acid phosphatase increased significantly in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere bacterial communities and the phyllosphere fungal community with increasing salinity. Importantly, the dominant taxa Kushneria and Bacillus, which are salt tolerant and growth promoting, were isolated from the phyllosphere and rhizosphere, respectively, and verified to have the ability to alleviate salt stress and promote the growth of rice. IMPORTANCE Avicennia marina is a pioneer salt-tolerant plant in coastal intertidal mangroves, an efficient blue carbon ecosystem. It is of great importance to explore how salinity affects the phyllosphere and rhizosphere microbial communities of A. marina. This study showed that the microbial communities in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere of A. marina had different constitutive properties, adaptive network interactions, and potential stress-promoting functions. Furthermore, the dominant bacteria Kushneria and Bacillus were obtained from the phyllosphere and rhizosphere, respectively, and their coculture with rice could effectively alleviate salt stress and promote rice growth. Additionally, the effects of salinity changes on microbial community structure, associations, and functional potential in the phyllosphere and rhizosphere of A. marina were observed. This study has enriched our understanding of the microbial community structure, function, and ecological stability of mangrove species in coastal intertidal zones and has practical significance for improving crop yield by using salt-tolerant plant microbiomes.

Abstract
Introduction Soil salinization is a serious abiotic stress for grapevines. The rhizosphere microbiota of plants can help counter the negative effects caused by salt stress, but the distinction between rhizosphere microbes of salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive varieties remains unclear. Methods This study employed metagenomic sequencing to explore the rhizosphere microbial community of grapevine rootstocks 101-14 (salt tolerant) and 5BB (salt sensitive) with or without salt stress. Results and Discussion Compared to the control (treated with ddH2O), salt stress induced greater changes in the rhizosphere microbiota of 101-14 than in that of 5BB. The relative abundances of more plant growth-promoting bacteria, including Planctomycetes, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, Cyanobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Chloroflexi, and Firmicutes, were increased in 101-14 under salt stress, whereas only the relative abundances of four phyla (Actinobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Chloroflexi, and Cyanobacteria) were increased in 5BB under salt stress while those of three phyla (Acidobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, and Firmicutes) were depleted. The differentially enriched functions (KEGG level 2) in 101-14 were mainly associated with pathways related to cell motility; folding, sorting, and degradation functions; glycan biosynthesis and metabolism; xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism; and metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, whereas only the translation function was differentially enriched in 5BB. Under salt stress, the rhizosphere microbiota functions of 101-14 and 5BB differed greatly, especially pathways related to metabolism. Further analysis revealed that pathways associated with sulfur and glutathione metabolism as well as bacterial chemotaxis were uniquely enriched in 101-14 under salt stress and therefore might play vital roles in the mitigation of salt stress on grapevines. In addition, the abundance of various sulfur cycle-related genes, including genes involved in assimilatory sulfate reduction (cysNC, cysQ, sat, and sir), sulfur reduction (fsr), SOX systems (soxB), sulfur oxidation (sqr), organic sulfur transformation (tpa, mdh, gdh, and betC), increased significantly in 101-14 after treatment with NaCl; these genes might mitigate the harmful effects of salt on grapevine. In short, the study findings indicate that both the composition and functions of the rhizosphere microbial community contribute to the enhanced tolerance of some grapevines to salt stress.

Abstract
Anopheles merus can breed in a range of saltwater concentrations. The consequences of this ability on the life history of adult An. merus are poorly understood. This study examined the effects of exposure to 0, 2.1875, 4.375, 8.75, and 17.5 g/L of sodium chloride on An. merus. The effects on larval development, adult longevity, fertility, and fecundity, as well as deltamethrin tolerance were examined. The effect of larval salt exposure on the expression of defensin-1 in adults was examined by quantitative Real-Time PCR. Finally, the effect of the larval salt concentration on microbial dynamics was assessed by 16S Next Generation Sequencing. High concentrations of saltwater increased larval development time and number of eggs laid, as well as deltamethrin tolerance. Larval exposure to salt also reduced the expression of defensin-1. The exposure also had a significant effect on microbial diversity in larvae and adults. The diversity of larvae decreased once adults emerged. Salt-tolerant bacterial genera predominated in larvae but were absent in adults. High salt concentrations resulted in greater abundance of Plasmodium-protective genera in adults. Although this study was conducted on a laboratory strain of An. merus, these data suggest that osmoregulation has a significant effect on the life history of the species with potential epidemiological consequences.

Abstract
Microorganisms are critical drivers of biological processes that contribute significantly to plant sustainability and productivity. In recent years, emerging research on plant holobiont theory and microbial invasion ecology has radically transformed how we study plant–microbe interactions. Over the last few years, we have witnessed an accelerating pace of advancements and breadth of questions answered using omic technologies. Herein, we discuss how current state-of-the-art genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics techniques reliably transcend the task of studying plant–microbe interactions while acknowledging existing limitations impeding our understanding of plant holobionts.

Abstract
Phytophthora nicotianae is an oomycete pathogen of global significance threatening many important crops. It is mainly controlled by chemosynthetic fungicides, which endangers ecosystem and human health; thus, there is an urgent need to explore alternatives for these fungicides. In this study, a new anti-oomycete aliphatic compound, 2E,4E-decadienoic acid (DDA), was obtained through coculture of Bacillus subtilis Tpb55 and Trichoderma asperellum HG1. Both in vitro and in vivo tests showed that DDA had a strong inhibitory effect against P. nicotianae. In addition, rhizosphere microbiome analysis showed that DDA reduced the relative abundance of Oomycota in rhizosphere soil. Transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis revealed that treatment of P. nicotianae with DDA resulted in significant downregulation of antioxidant activity and energy metabolism, including antioxidant enzymes and ATP generation, and upregulation of membrane-destabilizing activity, such as phospholipid synthesis and degradation. The metabolomic analysis results implied that the pathways influenced by DDA were mainly related to carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, and the cell membrane. The biophysical tests further indicated that DDA produced oxidative stress on P. nicotianae, inhibited antioxidant enzyme and ATPase activity, and increased cell membrane permeability. Overall, DDA exerts inhibitory activity by acting on multiple targets in P. nicotianae, especially on the cell membrane and mitochondria, and can therefore serve as a novel environment-friendly agent for controlling crop oomycete disease. IMPORTANCE P. nicotianae is an oomycete pathogen that is destructive to crops. Although some oomycete inhibitors have been used during crop production, most are harmful to the ecology and lead to pathogen resistance. Alternatively, medium-chain fatty acids have been reported to exhibit antimicrobial activity in the medical field in previous studies; however, their potential as biocontrol agents has rarely been evaluated. Our in vivo and in vitro analyses revealed that the medium-chain fatty acid 2E,4E-decadienoic acid (DDA) displayed specific inhibitory activity against oomycetes. Further analysis indicated that DDA may acted on multiple targets in P. nicotianae, especially on the cell membrane and mitochondria. Our findings highlight the potential of DDA in controlling oomycete diseases. In conclusion, these results provide insights regarding the future use of green and environment-friendly anti-oomycete natural products for the prevention and control of crop oomycete diseases.

Abstract
Saline soils are a major challenge in agriculture, and salinization is increasing worldwide due to climate change and destructive agricultural practices. Excessive amounts of salt in soils cause imbalances in ion distribution, physiological dehydration, and oxidative stress in plants. Breeding and genetic engineering methods to improve plant salt tolerance and the better use of saline soils are being explored; however, these approaches can take decades to accomplish. A shorter-term approach to improve plant salt tolerance is to be inoculated with bacteria with high salt tolerance or adjusting the balance of bacteria in the rhizosphere, including endosymbiotic bacteria (living in roots or forming a symbiont) and exosymbiotic bacteria (living on roots). Rhizosphere bacteria promote plant growth and alleviate salt stress by providing minerals (such as nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium) and hormones (including auxin, cytokinin, and abscisic acid) or by reducing ethylene production. Plant growth-promoting rhizosphere bacteria are a promising tool to restore agricultural lands and improve plant growth in saline soils. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of plant growth-promoting bacteria under salt stress and their applications for improving plant salt tolerance to provide a theoretical basis for further use in agricultural systems.
