Abstract
This report documents the pathological features of primary cardiac myxoid tumour (MT) in 11 dogs. Macroscopically, all the tumours were located in the tricuspid valve (TV), its septal leaflet being predominantly affected. Therefore, it appears that the TV is the most common site of occurrence for cardiac MT in dogs. Two gross anatomical types of canine valvular MT were evident. Seven of the 11 tumours were round or oval with a smooth or gently lobulated and glistening surface, while the other four were gelatinous, multilobulated and polypoid, with an irregular surface. Microscopically, in nine cases the tumours had an abundant myxoid matrix within which elongated spindle-shaped cells with no remarkable cytological atypia were sparsely embedded, suggesting a benign character (ie, myxoma). In the other two cases the tumours consisted of variably dense, haphazardly arranged, interlacing streams of anaplastic spindle-shaped or polygonal cells containing many mitotic figures, indicative of a malignant form of myxoma (ie, myxosarcoma). Isolated or clustered collections of myxoma cells (eg, cords, rings, syncytia) characteristic of human atrial myxoma were only rarely evident or lacking in all 11 cases, indicating that rarity or absence of such structural features may be specific to valvular MTs. Immunohistochemical findings were indicative of smooth muscle differentiation of the neoplastic cells. Tumour embolization to the intrapulmonary arteries and/or tumour implantation on the endocardium of the right heart chambers was evident only in the four cases of irregular-surfaced MT.

Abstract
Myxomas are rare tumors in dogs, in contrast to humans. Myxomas may cause left ventricular outflow tract obstructions. Primary cardiac tumors should be considered even in young dogs. Myxomas may be cavitated and dynamic.

A retrospective analysis of stereotactic body radiation therapy for canine heart base tumors: 26 cases. J Vet Cardiol 2020; 27:62-77. Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study retrospectively evaluated outcomes and adverse radiation effects (AREs) associated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for canine heart base tumors (HBTs). A secondary aim was to identify any demographic or echocardiographic factors that might determine which dogs would most benefit from SBRT. ANIMALS Twenty-six dogs that received SBRT for an imaging-based diagnosis of a HBT were evaluated. METHODS Twenty-three dogs were treated with three fractions of 10 Gy delivered daily or every other day. The remaining 3 dogs received variable protocols of one to five fractions. Demographic, echocardiographic, and radiographic information, AREs, and treatment responses were collected. Correlations of these data with survival time were evaluated. RESULTS The median overall survival time was 404 days (95% confidence interval: 239-554 days). The majority of dogs experienced a partial response (25%) or stable disease (60%) for a median duration of 333 days (95% confidence interval: 94-526 days). Three dogs had progressive disease within six months of SBRT. Radiographic pneumonitis was identified in 7 of 23 dogs, and clinical pneumonitis was identified in 4 dogs. No other AREs were noted. The rate of distant metastasis was 13%. On multivariate analysis, it was found that vena caval obstruction, supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, clinical signs, and enlarged locoregional lymph nodes at presentation were negatively associated with survival time. CONCLUSIONS Stereotactic body radiation therapy was delivered with a low rate and degree of normal tissue complications. Asymptomatic dogs with confirmed, progressive growth of a HBT may most likely benefit from SBRT.

Abstract
A 10 yr old papillon was evaluated for lethargy, inappetence, tachypnea, and labored breathing. Physical examination findings included dehydration, tachypnea, tachycardia, and muffled heart sounds. Thoracic radiographs revealed an enlarged cardiac silhouette. Echocardiography revealed a mild volume of pericardial effusion and no evidence of right atrial tamponade or a cardiac-associated mass. Cytological analysis of the pericardial effusion was consistent with blood. There was no evidence of neoplasia. Coagulation parameters were within normal limits. Initial treatment consisted of pericardiocentesis. A subtotal pericardiectomy was later performed. No surgical complications were noted, and the dog was discharged 2 days following surgery. Results of the histological examination of the pericardium revealed hemangiosarcoma. Treatment with doxorubicin was initiated 12 days after surgery, at which time, pulmonary metastasis was suspected. The dog survived for 18 days after subtotal pericardiectomy, when it was euthanized because of complications presumably related to pulmonary metastatic disease. This is the first published report of primary pericardial hemangiosarcoma. The dog had a short survival time; thus, the response to subtotal pericardiectomy combined with adjuvant doxorubicin treatment could not be determined. Pulmonary metastatic disease was suspected 12 days following surgery. Based on this case report, pericardial hemangiosarcoma carries a guarded prognosis.

Abstract
Background Myxoma is a very rare benign cardiac tumor in dogs. This is the first description of a cardiac myxoma originating from the left ventricular outflow tract, presumably causing sudden death. Case presentation A previously healthy 12-year-old male West Highland white terrier was found dead during its 1-week stay in a kennel. The dog was known to have a cardiac murmur. On necropsy, a pedunculated neoplasia was found attached to the interventricular aspect of the left ventricular outflow tract, resulting in almost complete obstruction of the aorta. As this was the only abnormality identified, the tumor was considered as the cause of sudden death. Histopathologic findings were compatible with a myxoma. Conclusions Benign intraluminal tumors of the heart are very rare in dogs, but may have fatal consequences. Echocardiography could have revealed the cause of the cardiac murmur of this previously asymptomatic dog. Surgical removal could have been possible, as the tumor was pedunculated.

Abstract
Cardiac tumours are uncommon in the canine and feline population and often an incidental finding. Common types include haemangiosarcoma (HSA), aortic body tumours (chemodectoma and paraganglioma) and lymphoma. These neoplasms can cause mild to severe, life-threatening clinical signs that are independent of the histological type and may be related to altered cardiovascular function or local haemorrhage/effusion into the pericardial space. Cardiac tumours may require symptomatic treatment aimed at controlling tumour bleeding and potential arrhythmias, and other signs caused by the mass effect. Additional treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. For all medical therapies, complete remission is unlikely and medical management, beyond adjunctive chemotherapy in HSA, requires further investigation but combination chemotherapy is recommended for lymphoma. The aim of this report is to summarize and critically appraise the current literature in a descriptive review. However, interpretation is limited by the lack of definitive diagnosis and retrospective nature of most studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the imaging modality of choice for cardiac tumors in people. Although neoplastic pericardial effusion (PE) carries a poor prognosis, benign idiopathic pericardial effusion does not. Definitive diagnosis is critical for surgical intervention, but currently available diagnostic techniques such as echocardiography and pericardial fluid cytology often are inconclusive. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVE Describe CMR findings associated with PE and determine whether CMR aids in differentiation of benign and neoplastic causes of PE. ANIMALS Eight client-owned dogs with PE diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). METHODS CMR was performed with a 1.5 T, including dark blood, steady-state free procession cine, pre- and postcontrast T1-weighted imaging, and delayed inversion recovery prepped imaging. RESULTS CMR confirmed a cardiac mass and supported suspected tumor type in 4 dogs with suspected hemangiosarcoma. In 1 equivocal TTE case, CMR did not demonstrate a mass, but neoplasia was later diagnosed. In another equivocal case, CMR did not demonstrate a mass but showed findings consistent with a pericardiocentesis complication. In 1 dog without evidence of cardiac neoplasia, abdominal magnetic resonance imaging identified presumptive hepatic and splenic metastases. On reevaluation of the original CMR study, the 2 equivocal cases that were interpreted as tumor negative were reassessed as tumor positive. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE CMR did not substantially improve diagnosis of cardiac tumors compared with TTE in these 8 cases, but it yielded useful descriptive information regarding extent, anatomic location, and potential tumor type and confirmed that CMR requires extensive additional training for tumor identification.

Abstract
This is the first description of a left ventricular inflow tract obstruction secondary to a myxoma in a dog. A 4 yr old, male fox terrier presented with a 1 mo history of cough and exercise intolerance. Expiratory dyspnea, pulmonary crackles, irregular cardiac rhythm, and a grade 4/6 pansystolic cardiac murmur over the left cardiac apex were the most important features on physical examination. The electrocardiogram revealed atrial fibrillation. Thoracic radiographs showed left-sided cardiac enlargement and mild pulmonary edema, especially in the hilar area. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography showed severe left atrial dilation and a homogenous, echodense mass involving both leaflets of the mitral valve and the posteromedial papillary muscle, inducing mitral stenosis. Spectral Doppler echocardiography was consistent with severe left ventricular inflow tract obstruction secondary to a mass. Therapy for congestive heart failure was prescribed. Follow-up examinations of the dog 1 mo, 2 mo, and 6 mo after diagnosis showed an improvement in clinical signs, but similar echocardiographic features. Eleven months after diagnosis, the dog was euthanized at the owner's request because of recurrent congestive heart failure. The postmortem examination showed the cardiac tumor was consistent with a myxoma.

Abstract
A 9-year-old female Golden Retriever was presented with an acute onset of progressive respiratory distress. Echocardiography revealed a left atrial mass that limited blood flow from the pulmonary veins. The pathological evaluation revealed a left atrial ossifying myxosarcoma, bilateral adrenocortical adenomas, multifocal pituitary hyperplasia with expression of adrenocorticotrophic hormone, and multiple pituitary Rathke's cleft cysts. These pathologic findings are similar to those described in Carney complex, a familial human syndrome characterized by cardiac myxoma and extracardiac tumors associated with mutations in the protein kinase A regulator gene PRKAR1A. Mutations were not detected in PRKAR1A exons in the present case.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In baboons, Papio sp. neoplasms tend to affect the hematopoietic system most commonly, with rare documentation of myxomatous neoplasms. In contrast, women can develop myxomatous masses within deep peripelvic tissues with some frequency during their reproductive years. METHODS We have identified and examined, retrospectively, myxomatous perineal masses in twelve female baboons within one research facility and compared their histopathologic, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic features to their human variants. RESULTS Our results indicate that these myxomatous neoplasms, in humans and non-human primates, share common features. CONCLUSION Further research, particularly molecular genetic analysis, may be needed to identify the baboon as a true animal model for myxomatous perineal neoplasms.

Abstract
Primary and secondary neoplasms of the canine and feline heart are uncommon. During a 2-year period, 83 dogs suffering from primary cardiac (n=11), extracardiac benign (n=6) or malignant (n=66) tumours and 30 cats with primary cardiac (n=1) or extracardiac (n=29) malignant tumours were examined. Echocardiography revealed four cases of primary cardiac neoplasms in dogs, but secondary heart tumours were not detected. After necropsy, tissue samples from the heart and tumours were examined histologically and immunohistochemically. In dogs, primary neoplasms included seven haemangiosarcomas, two chemodectomas, one rhabdomyosarcoma, and one neurofibrosarcoma. In 24 of 66 dogs examined, metastases of extracardiac neoplasms were found in the heart (15 carcinomas, six malignant lymphomas, three haemangiosarcomas). In cats, one case of primary haemangiosarcoma of the pericardium and five cases of secondary cardiac tumours (two malignant lymphomas, three carcinomas) occurred. Cardiac neoplasms in cats were not identified clinically but were detected by detailed gross sectioning of the heart (n=2) or histopathological examinations (n=3). This study showed an unexpectedly high number (36%) of dogs with cardiac metastases.

Abstract
Congestive heart failure is a common presentation in small animal practice. Cardiac tumours are an unusual cause of congestive heart failure and, when they occur, usually cause clinical signs associated with pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade. This case report outlines the clinical and histological findings in two dogs presented with clinical signs of congestive heart failure caused by obstruction of blood flow by intracavitary cardiac tumours. Case 1 showed signs of left-sided heart failure caused by osteosarcoma within the left atrial lumen, and case 2 presented with clinical signs of right-sided heart failure due to haemangiosarcoma occupying the right atrial and ventricular lumens. This case report provides further evidence for the inclusion of intracardiac neoplasia in the differential diagnosis for dogs with clinical signs of congestive heart failure.

Abstract
A case of cardiac myxoma arising from the tricuspid valve is described in an 8-year-old dog that had suffered intermittent episodes of syncope. At surgical operation, a large, irregular, gelatinous mass was found attached to the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve. The excised tumour, measuring 5x4x3.5 cm, had a grey-to-yellow, friable, mucoid, multilobulated and polypoid appearance, with focal haemorrhage. Histologically, the tumour consisted of a hypocellular mass of a myxoid matrix, rich in acid mucopolysaccharides, with a supporting structure of spindle-like, elongated or stellate cells scattered in an abundant stroma. The surface of the mass was covered by a single layer of endothelial-like cells. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the surface cells of the mass were positive for the endothelial marker CD34 and the constituent cells within the mass reacted positively and uniformly with antibodies to vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin. The dog died 36 h after the operation and, at necropsy, wide dissemination of myxomatous embolization to the intrapulmonary arteries was found.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the hindlimb of a 10-year-old Labrador retriever was performed preoperatively to define the limits and invasive nature of a synovial myxoma. This unusual tumour in dogs has also only rarely been reported in humans, although the use of advanced imaging techniques has been more widely reported in the assessment of soft tissue tumours in people. MRI was an invaluable aid in the delineation of the extensive pathological changes associated with this tumour and consequently its surgical treatment. Amputation was performed and the dog remained disease-free 18 months after surgery.

Abstract
A retrospective study was conducted from 1,919 necropsies of dogs, and 52 cases were selected on the basis of primary or metastatic neoplasia in the pericardium, the heart base, or the myocardium. Primary intrapericardial neoplasms were more frequent than intrapericardial metastases. Hemangiosarcomas were the most frequent primary neoplasms, followed by chemodectomas. Lymphomas were the most frequent metastatic neoplasms, followed by fibrosarcomas and rhabdomyosarcomas. Other neoplasms, either primary or metastatic, occurred rarely.
