Abstract
Beta-cypermethrin (β-CY) residues in food are an important threat to human health. Microorganisms can degrade β-CY residues during fermentation of fruits and vegetables, while the mechanism is not clear. In this study, a comprehensively investigate of the degradation mechanism of β-CY in a food microorganism was conducted based on proteomics analysis. The β-CY degradation bacteria Gordonia alkanivorans GH-1 was derived from fermented Pixian Doubanjiang. Its crude enzyme extract could degrade 77.11% of β-CY at a concentration of 45 mg/L within 24 h. Proteomics analysis revealed that the ester bond of β-CY is broken under the action of esterase to produce 3-phenoxy benzoic acid, which was further degraded by oxidoreductase and aromatic degrading enzyme. The up-regulation expression of oxidoreductase and esterase was confirmed by transcriptome and quantitative reverse transcription PCR. Meanwhile, the expression of esterase Est280 in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) resulted in a 48.43% enhancement in the degradation efficiency of β-CY, which confirmed that this enzyme was the key enzyme in the process of β-CY degradation. This study reveals the degradation mechanism of β-CY by microorganisms during food fermentation, providing a theoretical basis for the application of food microorganisms in β-CY residues.

Abstract
In recent decades, the increasingly widespread application of chemical pesticides has exacerbated the emergence of insecticide resistance among insect pests. In this study, we examined the rapid response of bacteria in the midgut of the fruit fly Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae) to stress induced by the insecticides lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad by analyzing the bacterial community structure and diversity in the midguts of 4-day-old B. tau. The results revealed that 4-day-old B. tau females were more resistant to lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad than their 4-day-old male counterparts. Alpha- and beta-diversity analyses revealed no significant differences between male and female B. tau with respect to the diversity and richness of gut bacteria in response to the same treatments. In response to treatment with lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad at lethal concentration 50 (LC50), we detected significant changes in the structure and diversity of the bacterial community in the midguts of both male and female B. tau. Particularly among the dominant bacterial genera, there were decreases in the relative abundances of Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, and Pectobacterium. Increases were observed in the relative abundances of Dysgonomonas, Erwinia, and Providencia. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for gaining a better understanding of the relationships between midgut bacteria and the insecticide resistance of B. tau.

Abstract
Pesticides already were detected in the oceans, and their fates require evaluation in these environmental conditions. Therefore, marine-derived fungi were assessed for Esfenvalerate biodegradation, approaching the effects of seawater and use of commercial emulsifiable formulation. Residual pesticide and four metabolites were quantified. Furthermore, kinetics were determined for the three tested strains (Microsphaeropsis sp. CBMAI 1675, Acremonium sp. CBMAI 1676, and Westerdykella sp. CBMAI 1679). These facultative marine fungi biodegraded up to 87 ± 2% of 100 mg L-1 Esfenvalerate in liquid media. However, Esfenvalerate biodegradation was faster in low salinity conditions than in artificial seawater. Moreover, rates of consumption were higher for Esfenvalerate in the pure form than for the commercial emulsifiable formulation. These results suggest that half-life of Esfenvalerate formulated with inert ingredients in seawater can have a double prolongation effect that can contribute to health and environmental issues.

Biodegradation of the Pesticides Bifenthrin and Fipronil by Bacillus Isolated from Orange Leaves. Appl Biochem Biotechnol 2022; 195:3295-3310. Abstract
The pyrethroid bifenthrin and the phenylpyrazole fipronil are widely employed insecticides, and their extensive use became an environmental issue. Therefore, this study evaluated their biodegradation employing bacterial strains of Bacillus species isolated from leaves of orange trees, aiming at new biocatalysts with high efficiency for use singly and in consortium. Experiments were performed in liquid culture medium at controlled temperature and stirring (32 °C, 130 rpm). After 5 days, residual quantification by HPLC-UV/Vis showed that Bacillus amyloliquefaciens RFD1C presented 93% biodegradation of fipronil (10.0 mg.L-1 initial concentration) and UPLC-HRMS analyses identified the metabolite fipronil sulfone. Moreover, Bacillus pseudomycoides 3RF2C showed a biodegradation of 88% bifenthrin (30.0 mg.L-1 initial concentration). A consortium composed of the 8 isolated strains biodegraded 81% fipronil and 51% bifenthrin, showing that this approach did not promote better results than the most efficient strains employed singly, although high rates of biodegradation were observed. In conclusion, bacteria of the Bacillus genus isolated from leaves of citrus biodegraded these pesticides widely applied to crops, showing the importance of the plant microbiome for degradation of toxic xenobiotics.

Abstract
Pyrethroids, such as cypermethrin (CYP), are widely employed in agriculture, promoting environmental pollution and the need for efficient decontamination methods. In this study, bacteria from orange crops were explored for CYP biodegradation. Among 40 tested bacterial strains, 20 grew in the presence of CYP and 19 performed statistically significant CYP biodegradation in 5 days (20.5%-97.8%). In addition, 3-phenoxybenzoic acid, the main metabolite from CYP, was quantified ranging from 1.1 mg.L-1 to 32.1 mg.L-1. The five most efficient strains, and consortia composed of 5, 10 and 20 bacteria biodegraded the CYP formulation as sole carbon source in phosphate buffer and in minimum mineral medium. Under optimized conditions determined employing Response Surface Methodology, Bacillus sp. CSA-1 and the consortium composed of 10 strains biodegraded 71.0% and 71.6% CYP in 24 h, respectively. Moreover, metabolite identification enabled the proposal of an extended biodegradation pathway with 29 identified compounds, including different new amide and amine derivatives that expanded the knowledge about the fate of this compound in the environment. Experiments of bioaugmentation in soil using Bacillus sp. CSA-1 and the consortium of 10 bacterial strains resulted in faster CYP biodegradation than natural attenuation, showing that the selection of efficient strains for composing a consortium is an interesting approach for bioremediation of pyrethroids.

Abstract
Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and levofloxacin (LEV), widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotics, are often found in sewage from the sewage treatment plants and marine environment. In this study, CIP and LEV biodegrading bacterial consortia were obtained from industrial wastewater. Microorganisms in these consortia were identified as Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) and Elizabethkingia miricola (E. miricola). The impacts of the critical operating parameters on the elimination of CIP and LEV by bacterial consortia have been investigated and optimized to achieve the maximum levels of CIP and LEV biodegradation. Using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS), possible degradation pathways for CIP and LEV were suggested by analyzing the intermediate degradation products. The role of the enzymes fluoroquinolone-acetylating aminoglycoside (6'-N-acetyltransferase) and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) in the breakdown of fluoroquinolones (FQs) was investigated as well. According to our findings, various biodegradation mechanisms have been suggested, including cleavage of piperazine ring, substitution of F atom, hydroxylation, decarboxylation, and acetylation, as the main biotransformation reactions. This study discovers the ability of non-reported bacterial strains to biodegrade both CIP and LEV as a sole carbon source, providing new insights into the biodegradation of CIP and LEV.

Abstract
Pyrethroids are a class of insecticides structurally similar to that of natural pyrethrins. The application of pyrethrins in agriculture and pest control lead to many kinds of environmental pollution affecting human health and loss of soil microbial population that affect soil fertility and health. Natural pyrethrins have been used since ancient times as insect repellers, and their synthetic versions especially type 2 pyrethroids could be highly toxic to humans. PBO (Piperonyl butoxide) is known to enhance the toxicity of prallethrin in humans due to the resistance in its metabolic degradation. Pyrethroids are also known to cause plasma biochemical profile changes in humans and they also lead to the production of high levels of reactive oxygen species. Further they are also known to increase SGPT activity in humans. Due to the toxicity of pyrethrins in water bodies, soils, and food products, there is an urgent need to develop sustainable approaches to reduce their levels in the respective fields, which are eco-friendly, economically viable, and socially acceptable for on-site remediation. Keeping this in view, an attempt has been made to analyse the advances and prospects in using pyrethrins and possible technologies to control their harmful effects. The pyrethroid types, composition and biochemistry of necessary pyrethroid insecticides have been discussed in detail, in the research paper, along with their effect on insects and humans. It also covers the impact of pyrethroids on different plants and soil microbial flora. The second part deals with the microbial degradation of the pyrethroids through different modes, i.e., bioaugmentation and biostimulation. Many microbes such as Acremonium, Aspergillus, Microsphaeropsis, Westerdykella, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus have been used in the individual form for the degradation of pyrethroids, while some of them such as Bacillus are even used in the form of consortia.

Abstract
The imprudent use of agrochemicals to control agriculture and household pests is unsafe for the environment. Hence, to protect the environment and diversity of living organisms, the degradation of pesticides has received widespread attention. There are different physical, chemical, and biological methods used to remediate pesticides in contaminated sites. Compared to other methods, biological approaches and their associated techniques are more effective, less expensive and eco-friendly. Microbes secrete several enzymes that can attach pesticides, break down organic compounds, and then convert toxic substances into carbon and water. Thus, there is a lack of knowledge regarding the functional genes and genomic potential of microbial species for the removal of emerging pollutants. Here we address the knowledge gaps by highlighting systematic biology and their role in adaptation of microbial species from agricultural soils with a history of pesticide usage and profiling shifts in functional genes and microbial taxa abundance. Moreover, by co-metabolism, the microbial species fulfill their nutritional requirements and perform more efficiently than single microbial-free cells. But in an open environment, free cells of microbes are not much prominent in the degradation process due to environmental conditions, incompatibilities with mechanical equipment and difficulties associated with evenly distributing inoculum through the agroecosystem. This review highlights emerging techniques involving the removal of pesticides in a field-scale environment like immobilization, biobed, biocomposites, biochar, biofilms, and bioreactors. In these techniques, different microbial cells, enzymes, natural fibers, and strains are used for the effective biodegradation of xenobiotic pesticides.

Abstract
Continued fenvalerate use has caused serious environmental pollution and requires large-scale remediation. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was discovered in fenvalerate metabolites degraded by Citrobacter freundii CD-9. Coculturing is an effective method for bioremediation, but few studies have analyzed the degradation pathways and potential mechanisms of cocultures. Here, a DBP-degrading strain (BDBP 071) was isolated from soil contaminated with pyrethroid pesticides (PPs) and identified as Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila. The optimum conditions for DBP degradation were determined by response surface methodology (RSM) analysis to be 30.9 mg/l DBP concentration, pH 7.5, at a culture temperature of 37.2°C. Under the optimized conditions, approximately 88% of DBP was degraded within 48 h and five metabolites were detected. Coculturing C. freundii CD-9 and S. acidaminiphila BDBP 071 promoted fenvalerate degradation. When CD-9 was cultured for 16 h before adding BDBP 071, the strain inoculation ratio was 5:5 (v/v), fenvalerate concentration was 75.0 mg/l, fenvalerate was degraded to 84.37 ± 1.25%, and DBP level was reduced by 5.21 mg/l. In addition, 12 fenvalerate metabolites were identified and a pathway for fenvalerate degradation by the cocultured strains was proposed. These results provide theoretical data for further exploration of the mechanisms used by this coculture system to degrade fenvalerate and DBP, and also offer a promising method for effective bioremediation of PPs and their related metabolites in polluted environments.

Biodegradation of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid by Acinetobacter johnsonii FZ-5 and Klebsiella oxytoca FZ-8 under anaerobic conditions. Biodegradation 2021; 33:17-31. Abstract
4-Hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) is a common organic compound that is prevalent in the environment, and the persistence of 4-HBA residues results in exertion of pollution-related detrimental effects. Bioremediation is an effective method for the removal of 4-HBA from the environment. In this study, two bacterial strains FZ-5 and FZ-8 capable of utilizing 4-HBA as the sole carbon and energy source under anaerobic conditions were isolated from marine sediment samples. Phylogenetic analysis identified the two strains FZ-5 and FZ-8 as Acinetobacter johnsonii and Klebsiella oxytoca, respectively. The strains FZ-5 and FZ-8 degraded 2000 mg·L-1 4-HBA in 72 h with degradation rates of 71.04% and 80.10%, respectively. The optimum culture conditions for degradation by the strains and crude enzymes were also investigated. The strains FZ-5 and FZ-8 also exhibited the ability to degrade other lignin-derived compounds, such as protocatechuic acid, cinnamic acid, and vanillic acid. Immobilization of the two strains showed that they could be used for the bioremediation of 4-HBA in an aqueous environment. Soils inoculated with the strains FZ-5 and FZ-8 showed higher degradation of 4-HBA than the uninoculated soil, and the strains could survive efficiently in anaerobic soil. This is the first report of 4-HBA-degrading bacteria, belonging to the two genera, which showed degradation ability under anaerobic conditions. This study expound the strains could efficiently degrade 4-HBA in anaerobic soil and will help in the development of 4-HBA anaerobic bioremediation systems.

Abstract
The consideration of ecological and human health risk is an emerging concern with the excessive or inappropriate use of deltamethrin. In this study, the degradation conditions of the newly deltamethrin-degrading strain Stenotrophomonas maltophilia XQ08 were optimized, which were temperature 35 °C, pH 7.5, cell concentration 5.5 × 108 cfu/mL, and substrate concentration 50 mg/L. Strain XQ08 could effectively degrade deltamethrin into three smaller molecular weight and lower toxic compounds. Enriched strain XQ08 was immobilized in a charcoal-alginate matrix and possessed more prominent biodegradability, reusability, storability and thermostability than free XQ08. In a continuous reactor system, immobilized XQ08 could averagely remove 78.81% of deltamethrin at the gradient influent dosages of 50, 75 and 100 mg/L within 30 d. Immobilized XQ08 introduced into the filed brown and yellow soils exhibited a superior degradation potential for deltamethrin with the half-lives of 1.77 and 2.04 d, which were 2.39 and 2.14 folds, or 6.09 and 5.47 folds faster than free XQ08 degradation (4.23 and 4.37 d) or natural dissipation (10.78 and 11.16 d), respectively. Moreover, application of free XQ08 decreased the persistence of deltamethrin in Brassica pekinensis and Brassica chinensis from 5.47 and 6.23 to 2.05 and 2.32 d, or by 62.52% and 62.76%, respectively. This study provides a feasible, effective and rapid biological removal technology for deltamethrin-contaminated environments in situ.

Abstract
As a biologically inspired insecticide, pyrethroids (PYRs) exert evident toxic side effects on non-target organisms. PYRs and their general toxic intermediate 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) have shown high detection rates/levels in human beings recently, for which diet was identified as the major exposure route. Microbial mineralization has emerged as a versatile strategy in addressing such escalating concern. Herein, PYRs and 3-PBA biodegradation with regards to strain safety, application and surfactant were summarized. Numerous PYRs-degrading microbes have been reported yet with a minority focused on 3-PBA. Most isolates were from contaminated sites while several microbial food cultures (MFCs) have been investigated. MFCs such as Bacillus spp. and Aspergillus spp. that dominate in PYRs-degrading microbial pools are applicable candidates for agricultural by-products detoxification during the postharvest process. Subsequently, we discussed committed degradation steps, wherein hydrolase responsible for PYRs ester linkage cleavage and oxygenase for 3-PBA diphenyl ether bond rupture play vital roles. Finally, comprehensive information of the key enzyme genes is outlined along with methodologies concerning gene cloning. Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (CYP) is competent for diphenyl ether scission. Newly-developed omics has become a feasible gene and enzyme mining technology. To achieve PYRs mineralization in feed and food commodities, the screening of MFCs rich in related enzymes and the construction of MFCs-derived genetically modified microbes (GMMs) exhibit great potential considering the safety issues.

Abstract
The microbial diversity of several environments has been explored by researchers for the biodegradation of pyrethroids. In this study, a new approach was employed aiming at the use of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner, a strain commercially available as bioinsecticide, for Cypermethrin (Cyp) biodegradation. This bacterial strain grew in the presence of Cyp and biodegraded this xenobiotic in a liquid medium. A central composite design for surface response methodology was employed for biodegradation. Under optimized conditions (50 mg·L-1 of Cyp, pH 8.5, 37 °C), 83.5% biodegradation was determined with the production of 12.0 ± 0.6 mg·L-1 3-phenoxybenzoic acid after 5 days. Moreover, a biodegradation pathway with the 18 compounds identified by GC-MS and LC-MS/MS was proposed. Experiments in soil for 28 days at 30 °C were performed, and 16.7% Cyp degradation was determined under abiotic conditions, whereas 36.6 ± 1.9% biodegradation was observed for B. thuringiensis Berliner with the native microbiome, indicating that bioaugmentation with this strain promoted a significant increase in the Cyp decontamination. Therefore, B. thuringiensis Berliner can act as biodegrader agent and insecticide at the same time, promoting decontamination of chemicals as Cyp while maintaining the protection of crops against insects. Moreover, B. thuringiensis species can produce bacteriocins with antifungal activity, which may increase agricultural productivity.

Abstract
Cypermethrin (CY) is a synthetic pyrethroid widely used to control insect pests and it elicits a toxic effect on the human body. In this study, Bacillus licheniformis B-1 isolated from tea garden soil was used to degrade CY effectively. A specific enzyme was mainly localized in the extracellular compartments of B-1. This enzyme was identified as an esterase that could be produced without CY. The enzyme was purified 23.03-fold to apparent homogeneity with 8.38% overall recovery by ammonium sulfate precipitation, anion exchange chromatography, and gel filtration chromatography. The molecular mass of the CY-degrading enzyme was 66.4 kDa, and its optimal pH and temperature were 8.5 and 40 °C, respectively. Appropriate Zn2+ , Mn2+ , Mg2+ , Tween 80, SDS, Triton X-100, and BSA concentrations could greatly increase the activity of this enzyme. By contrast, EDTA, 1,10-phenanthroline, NaF, and PMSF strongly inhibited its activity. The purified enzyme showed Km and Vmax values were 5.532 nmol/mL and 33.445 nmol/min. The CY residue in lettuce and cherry tomatoes could be removed more than 50% under the conditions of the treatment concentration for 500 mg/L and the enzyme preparation dilution of 100 times. These results suggested that the CY-degrading enzyme, a constitutive enzyme that mainly exists in the extracellular space, was a novel esterase that might be used to detoxify CY, and could remove CY in vegetables effectively. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Our research found a novel cypermethrin-hydrolyzing esterase from Bacillus licheniformis B-1 and proved that the enzyme could remove cypermethrin in vegetables effectively.

Abstract
Deltamethrin and its major metabolite 3‐phenoxybenzoic acid (3‐PBA) have caused serious threat to the environment as well as human health, yet little is known about their degradation pathways by bacterial co-cultures. In this study, the growth and degradation kinetics of Acinetobacter junii LH-1-1 and Klebsiella pneumoniae BPBA052 during deltamethrin and 3-PBA degradation were established, respectively. When the inoculum proportion of the strains LH-1-1 and BPBA052 was 7.5:2.5, and LH-1-1 was inoculated 24 h before inoculation of strain BPBA052, 94.25% deltamethrin was degraded and 9.16 mg/L of 3-PBA remained within 72 h, which was 20.36% higher and 10.25 mg/L lesser than that in monoculture of LH-1-1, respectively. And the half-life of deltamethrin was shortened from 38.40 h to 24.58 h. Based on gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic butyl dacyl ester, and phenol were identified as metabolites during deltamethrin degradation in co-culture. This is the first time that a co-culture degradation pathway of deltamethrin has been proposed based on these identified metabolites. Bioremediation of deltamethrin-contaminated soils with co-culture of strains LH-1-1 and BPBA052 significantly enhanced deltamethrin degradation and 3-PBA removal. This study provides a platform for further studies on deltamethrin and 3-PBA biodegradation mechanism in co-culture, and it also proposes a promising approach for efficient bioremediation of environment contaminated by pyrethroid pesticides and their associated metabolites.

Abstract
Pyrethroids are broad-spectrum insecticides and presence of chiral carbon differentiates among various forms of pyrethroids. Microbial approaches have emerged as a popular solution to counter pyrethroid toxicity to marine life and mammals. Bacterial and fungal strains can effectively degrade pyrethroids into non-toxic compounds. Different strains of bacteria and fungi such as Bacillus spp., Raoultella ornithinolytica, Psudomonas flourescens, Brevibacterium sp., Acinetobactor sp., Aspergillus sp., Candida sp., Trichoderma sp., and Candia spp., are used for the biodegradation of pyrethroids. Hydrolysis of ester bond by enzyme esterase/carboxyl esterase is the initial step in pyrethroid biodegradation. Esterase is found in bacteria, fungi, insect and mammalian liver microsome cells that indicates its hydrolysis ability in living cells. Biodegradation pattern and detected metabolites reveal microbial consumption of pyrethroids as carbon and nitrogen source. In this review, we aim to explore pyrethroid degrading strains, enzymes and metabolites produced by microbial strains. This review paper covers in-depth knowledge of pyrethroids and recommends possible solutions to minimize their environmental toxicity.
