Abstract
A 54-year-old African-American male presented to the colorectal surgery clinic with the chief complaint of a painful anal swelling that had been ongoing for several weeks. An adequate rectal examination was not possible due to severe pain. Therefore, he was taken to the operating room for an exam under anesthesia where a presacral mass was identified. A transgluteal core needle biopsy was performed which was consistent with gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Computed tomography imaging identified a 16 cm ×10 cm ×9 cmrectal gastrointestinal stromal tumor. Given the size and location, the patient began treatment with neoadjuvant Imatinib. His progress was followed with serial computed tomography scans and clinic visits. A 3D model was created the tumor and surrounding structures to aide in pre- and intraoperative planning. The model was utilized during patient education and found to valuable in describing the potential for levator invasion and framing potential post-operative outcomes. The patient was able to undergo rectal preservation via a robotic low anterior resection with a transanal total mesorectal excision, coloanal anastomosis, and diverting ileostomy.

Ethical concerns encompass informed consent, resource allocation, and equitable access. The future of breast surgery lies in continued research and development, ensuring that robotics becomes a standard of care accessible to all patients. This technology is reshaping breast surgery and offering new possibilities for minimally invasive, patient-centred care, ultimately redefining the standards of care in this critical field of medicine.

Abstract
The printing and manufacturing of anatomical 3D models has gained popularity in complex surgical cases for surgical planning, simulation and training, the evaluation of anatomical relations, medical device testing and patient-professional communication. 3D models provide the haptic feedback that Virtual or Augmented Reality (VR/AR) cannot provide. However, there are many technologies and strategies for the production of 3D models. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to show and compare eight different strategies for the manufacture of surgical planning and training prototypes. The eight strategies for creating complex abdominal oncological anatomical models, based on eight common pediatric oncological cases, were developed using four common technologies (stereolithography (SLA), selectie laser sinterning (SLS), fused filament fabrication (FFF) and material jetting (MJ)) along with indirect and hybrid 3D printing methods. Nine materials were selected for their properties, with the final models assessed for application suitability, production time, viscoelastic mechanical properties (shore hardness and elastic modulus) and cost. The manufacturing and post-processing of each strategy is assessed, with times ranging from 12 h (FFF) to 61 h (hybridization of FFF and SLS), as labor times differ significantly. Cost per model variation is also significant, ranging from EUR 80 (FFF) to EUR 600 (MJ). The main limitation is the mimicry of physiological properties. Viscoelastic properties and the combination of materials, colors and textures are also substantially different according to the strategy and the intended use. It was concluded that MJ is the best overall option, although its use in hospitals is limited due to its cost. Consequently, indirect 3D printing could be a solid and cheaper alternative.

Abstract
Within the human body, the intricate network of blood vessels plays a pivotal role in transporting nutrients and oxygen and maintaining homeostasis. Bioprinting is an innovative technology with the potential to revolutionize this field by constructing complex multicellular structures. This technique offers the advantage of depositing individual cells, growth factors, and biochemical signals, thereby facilitating the growth of functional blood vessels. Despite the challenges in fabricating vascularized constructs, bioprinting has emerged as an advance in organ engineering. The continuous evolution of bioprinting technology and biomaterial knowledge provides an avenue to overcome the hurdles associated with vascularized tissue fabrication. This article provides an overview of the biofabrication process used to create vascular and vascularized constructs. It delves into the various techniques used in vascular engineering, including extrusion-, droplet-, and laser-based bioprinting methods. Integrating these techniques offers the prospect of crafting artificial blood vessels with remarkable precision and functionality. Therefore, the potential impact of bioprinting in vascular engineering is significant. With technological advances, it holds promise in revolutionizing organ transplantation, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. By mimicking the natural complexity of blood vessels, bioprinting brings us one step closer to engineering organs with functional vasculature, ushering in a new era of medical advancement.

Abstract
Due to the fixed bony structure of the pelvis, the pelvic operation space is limited, complicating the surgical operation of rectal cancer, especially middle and low rectal cancer. The closer the tumor is to the anal verge, the smaller the operative field and operating space, the longer the operative time, and the greater the incidence of intraoperative side injuries and postoperative complications. To date, there is still no clear definition of a difficult pelvis that affects the surgical operation of rectal cancer. Few related research reports exist in the literature, and views on this aspect are not the same between countries. Therefore, it is particularly important to predict the difficulty of rectal cancer surgery in a certain way before surgery and to select the surgical method most suitable for each case during the treatment of rectal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic choledochojejunostomy (LCJ) is an essential basic skill for biliary surgeons. Therefore, we established a convenient and effective LCJ 3D printing model to evaluate whether the model could simulate the actual operation situation and determine its effectiveness and validity in surgical training. METHODS A 3D printing dry laboratory model was established to simulate LCJ. The face and content validity of the model were evaluated by six experienced biliary surgeons based on 5-point Likert scale questionnaires. A total of 15 surgeons with different levels of experience performed LCJ on the model and evaluated the structural validity of the model using the objective structured assessment of technical skills (OSATS). Simultaneously, the operation time of each surgery was also recorded. A study was also performed to further evaluate the learning curve of residents. RESULTS The operating space score of the model was 4.83 ± 0.41 points. The impression score of bile duct and intestinal canal was 4.33 ± 0.52 and 4.17 ± 0.41 points, respectively. The tactile sensation score of bile duct suture and intestinal canal suture was 4.00 ± 0.63 and 3.83 ± 0.41points, respectively. The OSATS score for model operation in the attending group was 29.20 ± 0.45 points, which was significantly higher than that in the fellow group (26.80 ± 1.10, P = 0.007) and the resident group (19.80 ± 1.30, P < 0.001). In addition, there was a statistical difference in operation time among surgeons of different experience levels (P < 0.05). Residents could significantly improve the surgical score and shorten the time of LCJ through repeated training. CONCLUSIONS The 3D printing LCJ model can simulate the real operation scenes and distinguish surgeons with different levels of experience. The model is expected to be one of the training methods for biliary tract surgery in the future.

Abstract
Purpose Advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCC) can have unclear borders, and simple expanded resection may not only destroy surrounding normal tissues unnecessarily, but can also leave residual tumor cells behind. In this article, we describe a new method for resection and evaluate its accuracy. Methods The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data of 12 patients with advanced cSCC were reconstructed to obtain three-dimensional (3D) tumor models and guide plates for surgeries. Thirty-eight patients with the same cSCC stage, who underwent expanded resection, were included. The distances between the upper, lower, left and right horizontal margins and tumor pathological boundaries were classified as "positive", "close" (0-6 mm), "adequate" (6-12 mm) or "excessive" (>12 mm). The positive margin rate and margin distance were compared between the groups. Results The 3D tumor models of 12 patients were all successfully reconstructed. The positive rate of 48 surgical margins in the guide plate group was 2.1%, and the proportion of "adequate" margins was 70.8%. A total of 152 margins of 38 patients were included in the extended resection group, for which the positive rate was 13.8%; this was higher than that of the guide plate group (P = 0.045). The proportion of "adequate" margins was 27.6%, with group differences seen in the distance distribution (P < 0.01). Conclusions In surgical resection of advanced cSCC, compared with simple expanded resection, surgical planning using a 3D tumor model and guide plate can reduce the rate of horizontal surgical margins, and the probability of under- or over-resection.Clinical Trial Registration: http://www.chictr.org.cn, Identifier [No. ChiCTR2100050174].

Abstract
In utero electroporation (IUE) requires high-level training in microinjection through the mouse uterine wall into the lateral ventricle of the mouse brain. Training for IUE is currently being performed in live mice as no artificial models allow simulations yet. This study aimed to develop an anatomically realistic 3D printed simulator to train IUE in mice. To this end, we created embryo models containing lateral ventricles. We coupled them to uterus models in six steps: (1) computed tomography imaging, (2) 3D model segmentation, (3) 3D model refinement, (4) mold creation to cast the actual model, (5) 3D mold printing, and (6) mold casting the molds with a mix of soft silicones to ensure the hardness and consistency of the uterus and embryo. The results showed that the simulator assembly successfully recreated the IUE. The compression test did not differ in the mechanical properties of the real embryo or in the required load for uterus displacement. Furthermore, more than 90% of the users approved the simulator as an introduction to IUE and considered that the simulator could help reduce the number of animals for training. Despite current limitations, our 3D simulator enabled a realistic experience for initial approximations to the IUE and is a real alternative for implementing the 3Rs. We are currently working on refining the model.

Abstract
3D printing was invented thirty years ago. However, its application in healthcare became prominent only in recent years to provide solutions for drug delivery and clinical challenges, and is constantly evolving. This cost-efficient technique utilises biocompatible materials and is used to develop model implants to provide a greater understanding of human anatomy and diseases, and can be used for organ transplants, surgical planning and for the manufacturing of advanced drug delivery systems. In addition, 3D printed medical devices and implants can be customised for each patient to provide a more tailored treatment approach. The advantages and applications of 3D printing can be used to treat patients with different eye conditions, with advances in 3D bioprinting offering novel therapy applications in ophthalmology. The purpose of this review paper is to provide an in-depth understanding of the applications and advantages of 3D printing in treating different ocular conditions in the cornea, glaucoma, retina, lids and orbits.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology has attracted a great deal of interest because it can be easily adapted to many industries and research sectors, such as biomedical, manufacturing, education, and engineering. Specifically, 3D bioprinting has provided significant advances in the medical industry, since such technology has led to significant breakthroughs in the synthesis of biomaterials, cells, and accompanying elements to produce composite living tissues. 3D bioprinting technology could lead to the immense capability of replacing damaged or injured tissues or organs with newly dispensed cell biomaterials and functional tissues. Several types of bioprinting technology and different bio-inks can be used to replicate cells and generate supporting units as complex 3D living tissues. Bioprinting techniques have undergone great advancements in the field of regenerative medicine to provide 3D printed models for numerous artificial organs and transplantable tissues. This review paper aims to provide an overview of 3D-bioprinting technologies by elucidating the current advancements, recent progress, opportunities, and applications in this field. It highlights the most recent advancements in 3D-bioprinting technology, particularly in the area of artificial organ development and cancer research. Additionally, the paper speculates on the future progress in 3D-bioprinting as a versatile foundation for several biomedical applications.

Abstract
Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is a procedure used to treat kidney stones. In PCNL, a needle punctures the kidney through an incision in a patient’s back and thin tools are threaded through the incision to gain access to kidney stones for removal. Despite being one of the main endoscopic procedures for managing kidney stones, PCNL remains a difficult procedure to learn with a long and steep learning curve. Virtual reality simulation with haptic feedback is emerging as a new method for PCNL training. It offers benefits for both novices and experienced surgeons. In the first case, novices can practice and gain kidney access in a variety of simulation scenarios without offering any risk to patients. In the second case, surgeons can use the simulator for preoperative surgical rehearsal. This paper proposes the first preliminary study of PCNL surgical rehearsal using the Marion Surgical PCNL simulator. Preoperative CT scans of a patient scheduled to undergo PCNL are used in the simulator to create a 3D model of the renal system. An experienced surgeon then planned and practiced the procedure in the simulator before performing the surgery in the operating room. This is the first study involving survival rehearsal using a combination of VR and haptic feedback in PCNL before surgery. Preliminary results confirm that surgical rehearsal using a combination of virtual reality and haptic feedback strongly affects decision making during the procedure.

Abstract
There is a growing body of evidences that brain surrogates will be of great interest for researchers and physicians in the medical field. They are currently mainly used for education and training purposes or to verify the appropriate functionality of medical devices. Depending on the purpose, a variety of materials have been used with specific and accurate mechanical and biophysical properties, More recently they have been used to assess the biocompatibility of implantable devices, but they are still not validated to study the migration of leaching components from devices. This minireview shows the large diversity of approaches and uses of brain phantoms, which converge punctually. All these phantoms are complementary to numeric models, which benefit, reciprocally, of their respective advances. It also suggests avenues of research for the analysis of leaching components from implantable devices.

Abstract
Mechanical characterisation of soft viscous materials is essential for many applications including aerospace industries, material models for surgical simulation, and tissue mimicking materials for anatomical models. Constitutive material models are, therefore, necessary to describe soft biological tissues in physiologically relevant strain ranges. Hereby, the adaptive quasi-linear viscoelastic (AQLV) model enables accurate modelling of the strain-dependent non-linear viscoelastic behaviour of soft tissues with a high flexibility. However, the higher flexibility produces a large number of model parameters. In this study, porcine muscle and liver tissue samples were modelled in the framework of the originally published AQLV (3-layers of Maxwell elements) model using four incremental ramp-hold experiments in uniaxial tension. AQLV model parameters were reduced by decreasing model layers (M) as well as the number of experimental ramp-hold steps (N). Leave One out cross validation tests show that the original AQLV model (3M4N) with 19 parameters, accurately describes porcine muscle tissue with an average R2 of 0.90 and porcine liver tissue, R2 of 0.86. Reducing the number of layers (N) in the model produced acceptable model fits for 1-layer (R2 of 0.83) and 2-layer models (R2 of 0.89) for porcine muscle tissue and 1-layer (R2 of 0.84) and 2-layer model (R2 of 0.85) for porcine liver tissue. Additionally, a 2 step (2N) ramp-hold experiment was performed on additional samples of porcine muscle tissue only to further reduce model parameters. Calibrated spring constant values for 2N ramp-hold tests parameters k1 and k2 had a 16.8% and 38.0% deviation from those calibrated for a 4 step (4N) ramp hold experiment. This enables further reduction of material parameters by means of step reduction, effectively reducing the number of parameters required to calibrate the AQLV model from 19 for a 3M4N model to 8 for a 2M2N model, with the added advantage of reducing the time per experiment by 50%. This study proposes a 'reduced-parameter' AQLV model (2M2N) for the modelling of soft biological tissues at finite strain ranges. Sequentially, the comparison of model parameters of soft tissues is easier and the experimental burden is reduced.

Abstract
Anatomic models are important in medical education and pre-operative planning as they help students or doctors prepare for real scenarios in a risk-free way. Several experimental anatomic models were made with additive manufacturing techniques to improve geometric, radiological, or mechanical realism. However, reproducing the mechanical behavior of soft tissues remains a challenge. To solve this problem, multi-material structuring of soft and hard materials was proposed in this study, and a three-dimensional (3D) printer was built to make such structuring possible. The printer relies on extrusion to deposit certain thermoplastic and silicone rubber materials. Various objects were successfully printed for testing the feasibility of geometric features such as thin walls, infill structuring, overhangs, and multi-material interfaces. Finally, a small medical image-based ribcage model was printed as a proof of concept for anatomic model printing. The features enabled by this printer offer a promising outlook on mimicking the mechanical properties of various soft tissues.

Abstract
In the field of robotic hand design, soft body and anthropomorphic design are two trends with a promising future. Designing soft body anthropomorphic robotic hands with human-like grasping ability, but with a simple and reliable structure, is a challenge that still has not been not fully solved. In this paper, we present an anatomically correct robotic hand 3D model that aims to realize the human hand's functionality using a single type of 3D-printable material. Our robotic hand 3D model is combined with bones, ligaments, tendons, pulley systems, and tissue. We also describe the fabrication method to rapidly produce our robotic hand in 3D printing, wherein all parts are made by elastic 50 A (shore durometer) resin. In the experimental section, we show that our robotic hand has a similar motion range to a human hand with substantial grasping strength and compare it with the latest other designs of anthropomorphic robotic hands. Our new design greatly reduces the fabrication cost and assembly time. Compared with other robotic hand designs, we think our robotic hand may induce a new approach to the design and production of robotic hands as well as other related mechanical structures.

Abstract
Physical organ models are the objects that replicate the patient-specific anatomy and have played important roles in modern medical diagnosis and disease treatment. 3D printing, as a powerful multi-function manufacturing technology, breaks the limitations of traditional methods and provides a great potential for manufacturing organ models. However, the clinical application of organ model is still in small scale, facing the challenges including high cost, poor mimicking performance and insufficient accuracy. In this review, the mainstream 3D printing technologies are introduced, and the existing manufacturing methods are divided into "directly printing" and "indirectly printing", with an emphasis on choosing suitable techniques and materials. This review also summarizes the ideas to address these challenges and focuses on three points: 1) what are the characteristics and requirements of organ models in different application scenarios, 2) how to choose the suitable 3D printing methods and materials according to different application categories, and 3) how to reduce the cost of organ models and make the process simple and convenient. Moreover, the state-of-the-art in organ models are summarized and the contribution of 3D printed organ models to various surgical procedures is highlighted. Abstract
In this study, an efficient methodology for manufacturing a realistic three-dimensional (3D) cerebrovascular phantom resembling a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) for applications in stereotactic radiosurgery is presented. The AVM vascular structure was 3D reconstructed from brain computed tomography (CT) data acquired from a patient. For the phantom fabrication, stereolithography was used to produce the AVM model and combined with silicone casting to mimic the brain parenchyma surrounding the vascular structure. This model was made with tissues-equivalent materials for radiology. The hollow vascular system of the phantom was filled with a contrast agent usually employed on patients for CT scans. The radiological response of the phantom was tested and compared with the one of the clinical case. The constructed model demonstrated to be a very accurate physical representation of the AVM and its vasculature and good morphological consistency was observed between the model and the patient-specific source anatomy. These results suggest that the proposed method has potential to be used to fabricate patient-specific phantoms for neurovascular radiosurgery applications and medical research.

Applicability of 3D-printed models in hepatobiliary surgey: results from "LIV3DPRINT" multicenter study. HPB (Oxford) 2021; 23:675-684. Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatobiliary resections are challenging due to the complex liver anatomy. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) has gained popularity due to its ability to produce anatomical models based on the characteristics of each patient. METHODS A multicenter study was conducted on complex hepatobiliary tumours. The endpoint was to validate 3DP model accuracy from original image sources for application in the teaching, patient-communication, and planning of hepatobiliary surgery. RESULTS Thirty-five patients from eight centers were included. Process testing between 3DP and CT/MRI presented a considerable degree of similarity in vascular calibers (0.22 ± 1.8 mm), and distances between the tumour and vessel (0.31 ± 0.24 mm). The Dice Similarity Coefficient was 0.92, with a variation of 2%. Bland-Altman plots also demonstrated an agreement between 3DP and the surgical specimen with the distance of the resection margin (1.15 ± 1.52 mm). Professionals considered 3DP at a positive rate of 0.89 (95%CI; 0.73-0.95). According to student's distribution a higher success rate was reached with 3DP (median:0.9, IQR: 0.8-1) compared with CT/MRI or 3D digital imaging (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION 3DP hepatic models present a good correlation compared with CT/MRI and surgical pathology and they are useful for education, understanding, and surgical planning, but does not necessarily affect the surgical outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Three-dimensional (3D) printing has many uses in healthcare such as in surgical training. It is becoming an interesting tool finding new pedagogical purposes in medical simulation. In this study, using a process consisting of 3D modeling, a simulator dedicated to pyeloplasty was designed, manufactured, and evaluated by experts. DESIGN With the aid of open-source software and computer-aided design software, 3D models of a renal parenchyma, a renal pelvis and a ureter were created. This renal apparatus was processed and crafted with additive manufacturing using soft polymer materials. Polyvinyl alcohol material was used to print the components in order to make them dissectible and to evaluate their use in surgical teaching. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Seven expert surgeons evaluated the model by performing a pyeloplasty sequence established in a previous work. An evaluation grid with 8 items related to surgical movement was rated on a 5-point Likert scale to assess how similar working with the model was to actual surgery. RESULTS Three items were rated with a score greater than or equal to 4 (Needle penetration, Thread-sliding, and Cutting Strength). Suture strength was rated with a score above 3.5 for both renal pelvis and ureter, whereas elasticity was rated below 3. Handling and mobility properties were rated above 3 for the renal pelvis and below 3 for the ureter. The cost of the unit was $0.30 per renal unit. The primary difference identified was a difference in elongation between polyvinyl alcohol material and real biological tissue. CONCLUSIONS It is feasible to generate and print a low cost upper urinary tract model from patient data imagery using environmentally friendly products that can be used effectively in surgical training. The simulator has been able to reproduce sensations related to surgical movements for a low cost. Hereafter, research into the pedagogical benefits provided to students, and through them, patients, should be performed. 3D printing models can offer new opportunities for healthcare simulation specific to different surgical fields.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid glands and surrounding structures are very complex, and this complexity can pose a challenge for clinicians when explaining and communicating to the patient the details of a proposed surgery for thyroid cancer. A three-dimensional (3D) thyroid cancer model could help and improve this communication. METHODS A 3D-printed phantom of a thyroid gland and its presenting cancer was produced from segmented head and neck contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) data from a patient with thyroid cancer. The phantom reflects the complex anatomy of the arteries, veins, nerves, and other surrounding organs, and the printing materials and techniques were adjusted to represent the texture and color of the actual structures. Using this phantom, patients and clinicians completed surveys on the usefulness of this 3D-printed thyroid cancer phantom. PARTICIPANTS patients (n = 33) and clinicians (n = 10). RESULTS In the patient survey, the patients communicated that the quality of understanding of their thyroid disease status was enhanced when clinicians explained using the phantom. The clinicians communicated that the 3D phantom was advantageous for explaining complex thyroid surgery procedures to patients, and that the 3D phantom was helpful in educating patients with relatively poor anatomical knowledge. CONCLUSIONS Using 3D printing technology, we produced a CT-based 3D thyroid cancer phantom, and patient and clinician surveys on its utility indicated that it successfully helped educate patients, providing them with an improved understanding of the disease.

Abstract
Organ phantoms are widely used for evaluating medical technologies, training clinical practitioners, as well as surgical planning. In the context of cardiovascular disease, a patient-specific cardiac phantom can play an important role for interventional cardiology procedures. However, phantoms with complicated structures are difficult to fabricate by conventional manufacturing methods. The emergence of three-dimensional (3D) printing with soft materials provides the opportunity to produce phantoms with complex geometries and realistic properties. In this work, the aim was to explore the use of a direct 3D printing technique to produce multimodal imaging cardiac phantoms and to test the physical properties of the new materials used, namely the Poro-Lay series and TangoPlus. The cardiac phantoms were first modeled using real data segmented from a patient chest computer tomography (CT) scan and then printed with the novel materials. They were then tested quantitatively in terms of stiffness and ultrasound (US) acoustic values and qualitatively with US, CT, and magnetic resonance imaging systems. From the stiffness measurements, Lay-fomm 40 had the closest Young's modulus to real myocardium with an error of 29-54%, while TangoPlus had the largest difference. From the US acoustics measurements, Lay-fomm 40 also demonstrated the closest soft tissue-mimicking properties with both the smallest attenuation and impedance differences. Furthermore, the imaging results show that the phantoms are compatible with multiple imaging modalities and thus have potential to be used for interventional procedure simulation and testing of novel interventional devices. In conclusion, direct 3D printing with Poro-Lay and TangoPlus is a promising method for manufacture of multimodal imaging phantoms with complicated structures, especially for soft patient-specific phantoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to describe the development of a low-cost, reusable, interactive 3D-printed model to simulate vascular anastomoses in kidney transplantation. DESIGN We used a de-identified high-resolution abdominal and pelvic computed tomography scan and computer-aided design software to create a model to simulate vascular anastomoses in kidney transplantation. Surgical residents were asked to tie anastomoses and complete a survey regarding the effectiveness of the model. SETTING University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan)-academic, tertiary care center. PARTICIPANTS University of Michigan general, vascular, and cardiothoracic surgery residents participated in this study (n = 12). RESULTS After using the model, all 12 residents reported having a better understanding of how to set up and sew the renal artery and vein anastomoses. All 12 residents found the model to be an effective teaching tool. CONCLUSIONS Surgical trainees find this low-cost, reusable, interactive 3D-printed model to be an effective way to develop the technical skills necessary for vascular anastomoses in kidney transplantation.

Abstract
Minimally invasive surgeries have numerous advantages, yet complications may arise from limited knowledge about the anatomical site targeted for the delivery of therapy. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure for treating aortic stenosis. Here, we demonstrate multimaterial three-dimensional printing of patient-specific soft aortic root models with internally integrated electronic sensor arrays that can augment testing for TAVR preprocedural planning. We evaluated the efficacies of the models by comparing their geometric fidelities with postoperative data from patients, as well as their in vitro hemodynamic performances in cases with and without leaflet calcifications. Furthermore, we demonstrated that internal sensor arrays can facilitate the optimization of bioprosthetic valve selections and in vitro placements via mapping of the pressures applied on the critical regions of the aortic anatomies. These models may pave exciting avenues for mitigating the risks of postoperative complications and facilitating the development of next-generation medical devices.

Abstract
Biliary tract rhabdomyosarcoma is a soft tissue malignant musculoskeletal tumor which is located in the biliary tract. Although this tumor represents less than 1% of the total amount of childhood cancers, when localized, a >70% overall 5-year survival rate, the resection is clinically challenging and complications might exist during the biliary obstruction. Although surgery remains a mainstay, complete tumor resection is generally difficult to achieve without mutilation and severe long-term sequelae. Therefore, manufacturing multi-material 3D surgical planning prototypes of the case provides a great opportunity for surgeons to learn beforehand what they can expect. Additionally, practicing before the operation enhances the probability of success. That is why different compositions of materials have been characterized to match the mechanical properties of the liver. To do this, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests and Shore hardness tests have been carried out. Amongst the material samples produced, 6%wt PVA (poly vinyl alcohol)/1%wt PHY (Phytagel)-1FT (Freeze-Thaw cycles) and 1%wt agarose appear as the best options for mimicking the liver tissue in terms of viscoelasticity. Regarding the Shore hardness, the best solution is 1%wt agarose. Additionally, a surgical planning prototype using this last material mentioned was manufactured and validated using a CT (Computed Tomography) scanner. In most of the structures the difference between the 3D model and the organ in terms of dimensions is less than 3.35 mm, which represents a low dimensional error, around 1%. On the other hand, the total manufacturing cost of the 3D physical model was €513 which is relatively low in comparison with other technologies.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM) has drawn tremendous attention as a versatile platform for the on-demand fabrication of objects with excellent spatial control of chemical compositions and complex architectures. The development of materials that are specifically designed for AM is highly desirable for a variety of applications ranging from personal healthcare, tissue engineering, biomedical devices, self-folding origami structures, and soft robotics. Polymeric macromolecules have received increasing attention due to a wide variety of materials, the versatility for novel chemistries, and the ability to tune chemical composition and architecture. This Viewpoint highlights the development of polymeric materials for direct-ink writing and vat photopolymerization for 3D printing applications. Recent chemical innovations and polymer architectures are overviewed, which also includes recent developments in responsive and adaptive objects from AM. Polymers for biological interface and sustainability in AM are also discussed.

Abstract
Learning anatomy is commonly facilitated by use of cadavers, plastic models and more recently three-dimensional printed (3DP) anatomical models as they allow students to physically touch and hold the body segments. However, most existing models are limited to surface features of the specimen, with little opportunity to manipulate the structures. There is much interest in developing better 3DP models suitable for anatomy education. This study aims to determine the feasibility of developing a multi-material 3DP heart model, and to evaluate students' perceptions of the model. Semi-automated segmentation was performed on computed tomgoraphy plastinated heart images to develop its 3D digital heart model. Material jetting was used as part of the 3D printing process so that various colors and textures could be assigned to the individual segments of the model. Morphometric analysis was conducted to quantify the differences between the printed model and the plastinated heart. Medical students' opinions were sought using a 5-point Likert scale. The 3DP full heart was anatomically accurate, pliable and compressible to touch. The major vessels of the heart were color-coded for easy recognition. Morphometric analysis of the printed model was comparable with the plastinated heart. Students were positive about the quality of the model and the majority of them reported that the model was useful for their learning and that they would recommend their use for anatomical education. The successful feasibility study and students' positive views suggest that the development of multi-material 3DP models is promising for medical education.

Abstract
Liver phantoms have been developed as an alternative to human tissue and have been used for different purposes. In this article, the items used for liver phantoms fabrication are mentioned same as in the previous literature reviews. Summary and characteristics of these materials are presented. The main factors that need to be available in the materials used for fabrication in computed tomography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine were analyzed. Finally, the discussion focuses on some purposes and aims of the liver phantom fabrication for use in several areas such as training, diagnoses of different diseases, and treatment planning for therapeutic strategies – for example, in selective internal radiation therapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy, laser-induced thermotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, and microwave coagulation therapy. It was found that different liver substitutes can be developed to fulfill the different requirements.

Abstract
Here, we present a new hybrid additive manufacturing (AM) process to create drug delivery systems (DDSs) with selectively incorporated drug depots. The matrix of a DDS was generated by stereolithography (SLA), whereas the drug depots were loaded using inkjet printing. The novel AM process combining SLA with inkjet printing was successfully implemented in an existing SLA test setup. In the first studies, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate-based specimens with integrated depots were generated. As test liquids, blue and pink ink solutions were used. Furthermore, bovine serum albumin labeled with Coomassie blue dye as a model drug was successfully placed in a depot inside a DDS. The new hybrid AM process makes it possible to place several drugs independently of each other within the matrix. This allows adjustment of the release profiles of the drugs depending on the size as well as the position of the depots in the DDS.

Abstract
There is a need to quantify and reproduce the mechanical behavior of brain tissue for a variety of applications from designing proper training models for surgeons to enabling research on the effectiveness of personal protective gear, such as football helmets. The mechanical response of several candidate phantom materials, including hydrogels and emulsions, was characterized and compared to porcine brain tissue under similar strains and strain rates. Some candidate materials were selected since their compositions were similar to brain tissue, such as emulsions that mimic the high content of lipids. Others, like silicone, were included since these are currently used as phantom materials. The mechanical response of the emulsion was closer to that of the native porcine brain tissue than the other candidates. The emulsions, created by addition of oil to a hydrogel, were able to withstand compressive strain greater than 40%. The addition of lipids in the emulsions also prevented the syneresis typically seen with hydrogel materials. This allowed the emulsion material to undergo freeze-thaw cycles with no significant change in their mechanical properties.

Abstract
Medical training simulations that utilize 3D-printed, patient-specific tissue models improve practitioner and patient understanding of individualized procedures and capacitate pre-operative, patient-specific rehearsals. The impact of these novel constructs in medical training and pre-procedure rehearsals has been limited, however, by the lack of effectively embedded sensors that detect the location, direction, and amplitude of strains applied by the practitioner on the simulated structures. The monolithic fabrication of strain sensors embedded into lifelike tissue models with customizable orientation and placement could address this limitation. The demonstration of 3D printing of an ionogel as a stretchable, piezoresistive strain sensor embedded in an elastomer is presented as a proof-of-concept of this integrated fabrication for the first time. The significant hysteresis and drift inherent to solid-phase piezoresistive composites and the dimensional instability of low-hysteresis piezoresistive liquids inspired the adoption of a 3D-printable piezoresistive ionogel composed of reduced graphene oxide and an ionic liquid. The shear-thinning rheology of the ionogel obviates the need to fabricate additional structures that define or contain the geometry of the sensing channel. Sensors are printed on and subsequently encapsulated in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a thermoset elastomer commonly used for analog tissue models, to demonstrate seamless fabrication. Strain sensors demonstrate geometry- and strain-dependent gauge factors of 0.54-2.41, a high dynamic strain range of 350% that surpasses the failure strain of most dermal and viscus tissue, low hysteresis (<3.5% degree of hysteresis up to 300% strain) and baseline drift, a single-value response, and excellent fatigue stability (5000 stretching cycles). In addition, we fabricate sensors with stencil-printed silver/PDMS electrodes in place of wires to highlight the potential of seamless integration with printed electrodes. The compositional tunability of ionic liquid/graphene-based composites and the shear-thinning rheology of this class of conductive gels endows an expansive combination of customized sensor geometry and performance that can be tailored to patient-specific, high-fidelity, monolithically fabricated tissue models.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing or additive manufacturing, as a revolutionary technology for future advanced manufacturing, usually prints parts with poor control of complex gradients for functional applications. We present a single-vat grayscale digital light processing (g-DLP) 3D printing method using grayscale light patterns and a two-stage curing ink to obtain functionally graded materials with the mechanical gradient up to three orders of magnitude and high resolution. To demonstrate the g-DLP, we show the direct fabrication of complex 2D/3D lattices with controlled buckling and deformation sequence, negative Poisson's ratio metamaterial, presurgical models with stiffness variations, composites for 4D printing, and anti-counterfeiting 3D printing.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) printing refers to a number of manufacturing technologies that generate a physical model from digital information. Medical 3D printing was once an ambitious pipe dream. However, time and investment made it real. Nowadays, the 3D printing technology represents a big opportunity to help pharmaceutical and medical companies to create more specific drugs, enabling a rapid production of medical implants, and changing the way that doctors and surgeons plan procedures. Patient-specific 3D-printed anatomical models are becoming increasingly useful tools in today's practice of precision medicine and for personalized treatments. In the future, 3D-printed implantable organs will probably be available, reducing the waiting lists and increasing the number of lives saved. Additive manufacturing for healthcare is still very much a work in progress, but it is already applied in many different ways in medical field that, already reeling under immense pressure with regards to optimal performance and reduced costs, will stand to gain unprecedented benefits from this good-as-gold technology. The goal of this analysis is to demonstrate by a deep research of the 3D-printing applications in medical field the usefulness and drawbacks and how powerful technology it is.

Abstract
Extrusion-based 3D printing, an emerging technology, has been previously used in the comprehensive fabrication of light-emitting diodes using various functional inks, without cleanrooms or conventional microfabrication techniques. Here, polymer-based photodetectors exhibiting high performance are fully 3D printed and thoroughly characterized. A semiconducting polymer ink is printed and optimized for the active layer of the photodetector, achieving an external quantum efficiency of 25.3%, which is comparable to that of microfabricated counterparts and yet created solely via a one-pot custom built 3D-printing tool housed under ambient conditions. The devices are integrated into image sensing arrays with high sensitivity and wide field of view, by 3D printing interconnected photodetectors directly on flexible substrates and hemispherical surfaces. This approach is further extended to create integrated multifunctional devices consisting of optically coupled photodetectors and light-emitting diodes, demonstrating for the first time the multifunctional integration of multiple semiconducting device types which are fully 3D printed on a single platform. The 3D-printed optoelectronic devices are made without conventional microfabrication facilities, allowing for flexibility in the design and manufacturing of next-generation wearable and 3D-structured optoelectronics, and validating the potential of 3D printing to achieve high-performance integrated active electronic materials and devices.
