Abstract
OBJECTIVE The primary objective of this investigation was to assess the impact of acupuncture intervention and explore the intricacies of acupoint selection as a therapeutic strategy for chemotherapy-induced Anorexia (CIA). METHOD Eight electronic databases were searched to identify relevant studies on the use of acupuncture for the treatment of CIA to conduct a comprehensive meta-analysis. Following this, the Apriori algorithm, correlation analysis, and cluster analysis were performed to identify correlations between the selection of acupoints. RESULTS Acupuncture significantly reduced the incidence of anorexia (RR = 0.76, 95%CI: 0.65, 0.90; I2=63%; p = 0.001; n = 503) and anorexia score (SMD=-0.33, 95%CI: -0.53, -0.14; I2=22%; p = 0.0008; n = 419), as well as preserved body mass (MD = 2.70, 95%CI: 1.08, 4.32; I2=0%; p = 0.001; n = 187) and enhanced physical strength (MD = 4.23, 95%CI: 1.90, 6.55; I2=58%; p = 0.0004; n = 377). Moreover, subgroup analysis highlighted its efficacy in managing anorexia associated with non-gastrointestinal tumors and mitigating the severity of cisplatin-induced anorexia. Meanwhile, Zusanli (ST36), Neiguan (PC6), Tianshu (ST25), Zhongwan (RN12), and Qihai (RN6) were identified as crucial acupoints in CIA management. CONCLUSION Acupuncture holds promise as a potential non-pharmacological approach for managing anorexia during cancer chemotherapy. To provide robust evidence of its effectiveness, well-designed Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) with larger participant cohorts, and consistent core outcome measures are essential.

Abstract
Background Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common complication following abdominal surgery, which can lead to significant negative impacts on patients' well-being and healthcare costs. However, the efficacy of current treatments is not satisfactory. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the therapeutic effects of acupuncture intervention and explore the regulation of acupoint selection for treating POI in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Methods We searched eight electronic databases to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for POI in CRC and conducted a meta-analysis. Subsequently, we utilized the Apriori algorithm and the Frequent pattern growth algorithm, in conjunction with complex network and cluster analysis, to identify association rules of acupoints. Results The meta-analysis showed that acupuncture led to significant reductions in time to first defecation (MD=-20.93, 95%CI: -25.35, -16.51; I2 = 93.0%; p < 0.01; n=2805), first flatus (MD=-15.08, 95%CI: -18.39, -11.76; I2 = 96%; p < 0.01; n=3284), and bowel sounds recovery (MD=-10.96, 95%CI: -14.20, -7.72; I2 = 94%; p < 0.01; n=2043). A subgroup analysis revealed that acupuncture not only reduced the duration of POI when administered alongside conventional care but also further expedited the recovery of gut function after colorectal surgery when integrated into the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathway. The studies included in the analysis reported no instances of serious adverse events associated with acupuncture. We identified Zusanli (ST36), Shangjuxu (ST37), Neiguan (PC6), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Xiajuxu (ST39), Hegu (LI4), Tianshu (ST25), and Zhongwan (RN12) as primary acupoints for treating POI. Association rule mining suggested potential acupoint combinations including {ST37, ST39}≥{ST36}, {PC6, ST37}≥{ST36}, {SP6, ST37}≥{ST36}, and {ST25, ST37}≥{ST36}. Conclusion Meta-analysis indicates acupuncture's safety and superior effectiveness over postoperative care alone in facilitating gastrointestinal recovery. Machine-learning approaches highlight the importance of the lower He-sea points, including Zusanli (ST36) and Shangjuxu (ST37), in treating POI in CRC patients. Incorporating additional acupoints such as Neiguan (PC6) (for pain and vomiting) and Sanyinjiao (SP6) (for abdominal distension and poor appetite) can optimize treatment outcomes. These findings offer valuable insights for refining treatment protocols in both clinical and experimental settings, ultimately enhancing patient care.

Abstract
Acupuncture can ameliorate or treat diseases according to the meridian theory in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM); however, its mechanism has not been scientifically clarified. On the other hand, telocytes (TCs) are morphologically in accordance with the meridian system, which needs further cytological investigations and acupuncture confirmation. The present study showed that acupuncture could activate TCs in several ways, alleviating rabbit ulcerative colitis. TCs could cytologically communicate the acupoints, the acupuncture sites in skin with their corresponding large intestine by TC homo-cellular junctions, exosomes around TCs, and TC-mediated nerves or blood vessels. TCs expressed transient receptor potential vanilloid type 4, the mechanosensitive channel protein that can transduce the mechanical stimulation of acupuncture into biochemical signals transferring along the extremely thin and long TCs. Collectively, a cellular mechanism diagram of acupuncture was concluded based on TC characteristics. Those results also confirmed the viewpoint that TCs were the key cells of meridian essence in TCM.

Abstract
Acupuncture point specificity has been recognized as a key scientific issue in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), but there is limited clinical trial or animal study to verify the characteristics of PC6, BL15, and ST36 in the protection from myocardial injury. We aimed to compare the effects among these three acupoints on the acute myocardial infarction mice model and to explore possible mechanisms for the first time. We found that PC6 is the most appropriate acupoint to deliver efficacy and safety to treat acute MI in mice. BL15 stimulation improved the systolic function, but increased the risk of arrhythmia. ST36 only slightly attenuated systolic function and had no effect on arrhythmia during MI. RNA profiles of skin tissue in local acupoints demonstrated that the most altered DEGs and related pathways may partly support its best effects of PC6 treatment on MI injury, and support the observed phenomenon of the acupoint specificity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postoperative ileus after colorectal surgery is a frequent problem that significantly delays recovery, increases perioperative costs, and negatively impacts on daily life, physical and psychosocial functioning, and wellbeing. We investigated the effect of acupuncture at different single acupoint combined with standard care on postoperative ileus. METHODS In this single-centre, three-arm, prospective, randomised trial, we enrolled patients with primary colorectal cancer undergoing elective colorectal resection at Cancer Hospital Chinese Academy of Medical Science in Beijing, China. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to receive either electroacupuncture (EA) at ST36 or ST25 combined with standard care (two EA groups) once daily from post-operative days 1-4, or standard care alone (standard care group). The co-primary outcomes were time to first flatus and time to defecation assessed in the intention-to-treat population. This study is registered with Chictr.org.cn, ChiCTR1900027466. FINDING Between Nov 15, 2019, and Sep 30, 2020, 129 patients were assessed for eligibility, 105 patients (35 patients per group) were enrolled and included in the intention-to-treat analysis. After receiving EA at ST36, the time to first flatus and defecation were shorter (between-group difference -10.98 [97.5% CI -21.41 to -0.56], p = 0·02 for flatus; -25.41 [-47.89 to -2.93], p = 0·02 for defecation). However, we did not observe a significant difference in time to first flatus and defecation between the EA at ST25 group and standard care group (between-group difference -5.54 [97.5% CI -15.78 to 4.70], p = 0·26 for flatus; -17.69 [-40.33 to 4.95], p = 0·08 for defecation). There were no serious adverse events. INTERPRETATION Compared with standard care alone, standard care combined with EA at ST36, but not ST25, significantly enhances bowel function recovery in a postoperative setting to patients with colorectal cancer with laparoscopic elective colorectal resection. Abstract
So far, a number of acupuncture studies have shown anti-inflammatory effects of acupuncture treatment, mostly known at specific point ST36. However, there is no literature that oversaw the inflammation-regulatory effects of acupuncture in each tissue. Therefore, we investigated how acupuncture at specific acupoint ST36 regulates inflammation and its underlying mechanisms. We searched literatures on PubMed until July 2021 using the keywords “animal, acupuncture, ST36, inflammation, immune,” and 292 literatures were searched. We ultimately selected 69 studies to determine the anti-inflammatory actions of acupuncture at ST36 and classified the changes of inflammatory mediators according to target regions. Forty-three studies were included in body fluids, 27 studies in the digestive system, 17 studies in the nervous system, and 30 studies in other tissues or organs. In this review, we found that acupuncture at ST36 has clinical benefits in relieving inflammation through several mechanisms such as vagus nerve activation, toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/NF-κB signaling, macrophage polarization, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, and cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. We expect that these data will inform further studies related to ST36 acupuncture on inflammation.

Abstract
Background The relationship between inflammatory bowel disease and gut microbiota is inextricable. Electroacupuncture (EA) can alleviate acute experimental colitis, but the performance of intestinal microorganisms and the mechanism are still not fully understood. We investigated the relationship between the EA and gut microbes and clarified the role of tight junction and adiponectin in the anti-inflammatory effect of EA. Methods Male C57BL/6 mice were randomized into three groups: normal control, dextran sulfate sodium- (DSS-) induced ulcerative colitis (DSS), and DSS with EA ST36 (DSS + EA). Mice body weight, DAI score, colon length, and histological score were evaluated for colitis severity. Colonic inflammation and tight junctions were demonstrated by the immunohistochemical (IHC) method. Systemic responses were confirmed by plasma cytokines and adiponectin with multiplex immunoassays. Gut microbiome profiling was conducted by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results EA had benefit in relieving both macroscopic and microscopic colonic inflammation. It can reduce disease activity, maintain colon length, and ameliorate histological inflammatory reaction. In IHC stain, EA decreased CD11b, F4/80, TLR4, and MyD88 and preserved claudin-1 and ZO-1 expression. Compared with the control group, the DSS group showed elevated levels of CRP, IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-6, but decreased adiponectin. These changes were reversed by EA, accompanied by modulation of the overall structure of gut microbiota. Conclusion Our findings suggest that EA exerts its therapeutic effect by TLR4 signaling via the MyD88-dependent pathway. EA could increase adiponectin, maintain mucosal tight junctions, and modulate gut microbiota.

Abstract

Nevertheless, the specific mechanisms underlying the efficacy of this treatment remain unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the variations of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) and explore the changes in mSCF/KIT-ETV1 signaling in the antrum and corpus of diabetic mice after treatment with EA. Methods. Male C57BL/6 mice were randomized into five groups: control group, diabetic group (DM), diabetic-plus-sham EA group (SEA), diabetic-plus-low-frequency EA group (LEA), and diabetic-plus-high-frequency EA group (HEA). The expression levels of Ano1, c-Kit, and ETV1 were assessed by immunofluorescence in the antrum and corpus. Western blotting and PCR methods were further used to evaluate c-Kit, mSCF, and ETV1 expression. Results. (1) c-Kit and Ano1 were obviously decreased in the DM group, but c-Kit reduced much more than Ano1. (2) The mSCF, c-Kit, and ETV1 mRNA and protein levels were obviously decreased in the DM group in both the antrum and the corpus (P < 0.01), but they were significantly elevated in the LEA and HEA groups (P < 0.01). Conclusions. Ano1 is a reliable marker to detect ICC changes in diabetes; low- and high-frequency EA at acupoint ST36 can protect the networks of ICC possibly via normal activation of mSCF/KIT-ETV1 signaling.
