Abstract
Recently, poultry industry has been seeking antibiotic residue-free poultry products and safe nutritious feed additives. Whether rosemary ultrafine powder (RUP) affects productive performance by regulating the intestinal microbiome of aged layers remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of dietary RUP supplementation on the production performance, egg quality, antioxidant capacity, intestinal microbial structure, and metabolome of aged hens. The results indicate that RUP had no significant effect on production performance but significantly enhanced Thick albumen height, Haugh unit, yolk color (P < 0.05), daily feed intake, and qualified egg rate. Serum content of non-esterified fatty acids, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase increased significantly (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the liver total protein content was significantly increased (P < 0.05). 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed that RUP significantly impacted both α- and β-diversity of the caecum microbiota. Linear discriminant analysis of effect size and random forest identified Bacteroides, Muribaculum, Butyricimonas, Odoribacter, and Prevotella as biomarkers in groups A and B. In comparing groups A and C, Barnesiella, Turicibacter, and Acholeplasma were critical bacteria, while comparing groups A and D highlighted Barnesiella and Candidatus Saccharimonas as differential bacteria. FAPROTAX analysis of the caecum microbiota revealed that the functional genes associated with harmful substance biodegradation were significantly increased in the RUP-fed group. Based on Spearman correlation analysis, alterations in microbial genera were associated with divergent metabolites. In summary, dietary RUP can improve egg quality and antioxidant capacity and regulate the intestinal microbiome and metabolome in aged breeders. Therefore, RUP can potentially be used as a feed additive to extend breeder service life at an appropriate level of 1.0 g/kg.

Abstract
Melatonin (MT) is an amine hormone secreted by the body that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to investigate pathophysiological protection of MT in heat-stressed chickens. By modelling heat-stressed chickens and treating them with MT. After 21 days of administration, serum antioxidant enzymes, biochemical indices, inflammatory cytokine and heat-stress indices were detected, along with cardiopulmonary function indices and histological observations in chickens. The results show heat-stress induced a decrease (P < 0.05) in body weight and an increase in body temperature, which was reversed after MT intervention. Treatment with MT inhibited (P < 0.05) the secretion of pro-inflammatory factors interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor α, serum heat shock protein 70, corticosterone, and elevated (P < 0.05) the levels of biochemical factors total protein, albumin, globulin, and increased (P < 0.05) the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase in chicken serum caused by heat stress, and the best effect was observed with the medium dose of MT. The heat-stress caused cardiac atrophy and pulmonary congestion, decreased (P < 0.05) the cardiac function indices creatine kinase isoenzyme, cardiac troponin I, angiotensin receptor I, creatine kinase and lung function indices myeloperoxidase, angiotensin-II, heat shock factor I, and increased (P < 0.05) the lung vascular endothelial growth factor II. Sections of the heart and lungs after administration of MT were observed to be more complete with more normal tissue indices. At the same time, compared with heat stress, heart and lung function indices of grade chickens after MT administration were significantly (P < 0.05)reduced and tended to normal levels, and the best effect was observed in the medium-dose MT. In conclusion, heat stress can cause pathophysiological damage in chickens, and 1 mg/kg/d of exogenous melatonin can attenuate this adverse effect.

Abstract
Over the past decades, global climate change has led to a significant increase in the average ambient temperature causing heat stress (HS) waves. This increase has resulted in more frequent heat waves during the summer periods. HS can have detrimental effects on poultry, including growth retardation, imbalance in immune/antioxidant pathways, inflammation, intestinal dysfunction, and economic losses in the poultry industry. Therefore, it is crucial to find an effective, safe, applicable, and economically efficient method for reducing these negative influences. Medicinal plants (MPs) contain various bioactive compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Due to the biological activities of MPs, it could be used as promising thermotolerance agents in poultry diets during HS conditions. Nutritional supplementation with MPs has been shown to improve growth performance, antioxidant status, immunity, and intestinal health in heat-exposed chickens. As a result, several types of herbs have been supplemented to mitigate the harmful effects of heat stress in chickens. Therefore, several types of herbs have been supplemented to mitigate the harmful effects of heat stress in chickens. This review aims to discuss the negative consequences of HS in poultry and explore the use of different traditional MPs to enhance the health status of chickens.

Abstract
The signature of selection is a crucial concept in evolutionary biology that refers to the pattern of genetic variation which arises in a population due to natural selection. In the context of climate adaptation, the signature of selection can reveal the genetic basis of adaptive traits that enable organisms to survive and thrive in changing environmental conditions. Breeds living in diverse agroecological zones exhibit genetic "footprints" within their genomes that mirror the influence of climate-induced selective pressures, subsequently impacting phenotypic variance. It is assumed that the genomes of animals residing in these regions have been altered through selection for various climatic adaptations. These regions are known as signatures of selection and can be identified using various summary statistics. We examined genotypic data from eight different cattle breeds (Gir, Hariana, Kankrej, Nelore, Ongole, Red Sindhi, Sahiwal, and Tharparkar) that are adapted to diverse regional climates. To identify selection signature regions in this investigation, we used four intra-population statistics: Tajima's D, CLR, iHS, and ROH. In this study, we utilized Bovine 50 K chip data and four genome scan techniques to assess the genetic regions of positive selection for high-temperature adaptation. We have also performed a genome-wide investigation of genetic diversity, inbreeding, and effective population size in our target dataset. We identified potential regions for selection that are likely to be caused by adverse climatic conditions. We observed many adaptation genes in several potential selection signature areas. These include genes like HSPB2, HSPB3, HSP20, HSP90AB1, HSF4, HSPA1B, CLPB, GAP43, MITF, and MCHR1 which have been reported in the cattle populations that live in varied climatic regions. The findings demonstrated that genes involved in disease resistance and thermotolerance were subjected to intense selection. The findings have implications for marker-assisted breeding, understanding the genetic landscape of climate-induced adaptation, putting breeding and conservation programs into action.

Abstract
Heat stress in chickens caused by high temperatures in summer is a serious issue faced by the poultry industry globally, which reduces product quality. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of resveratrol in alleviating heat stress injury and inflammatory response of jejunal mucosa in black-boned chickens through TLR4/MAPK signaling pathway. In total, 240 black-boned chickens (28-day old) were randomly divided into 4 treatment groups as follows. The normal temperature (NT) and normal temperature with resveratrol (NT+Res) groups received a basal diet without and with 400 mg/kg resveratrol, respectively, and treated at 24℃ ± 2℃, 24 h/d. The high temperature (HT) and high temperature with resveratrol (HT+Res) groups received basal diet without and with 400 mg/kg resveratrol, respectively, and treated at 37℃ ± 2℃ for 8 h/d and 24°C ± 2°C for the rest of the time for 12 d. The results revealed the heat-stress responses impaired the villous structure of the jejunum, causing a rough and uneven surface of the jejunal villus, and local intestinal villi were even more prone to rupture. However, resveratrol significantly improved the morphology and structure of jejunal mucosa under heat stress. Heat stress increased the mRNA levels of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), c-Jun, c-fos, caspase-3, and p38 (P < 0.05), reduced mRNA level of Bcl-2, and reduced the expression of tight junction proteins Occludin, ZO-1, and Claudin1 (P < 0.05) in the jejunal mucosa. However, resveratrol inhibited the TLR4/ mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway via downregulating TLR4, c-Jun, p38, and caspase-3 (P < 0.05); upregulating Bcl-2 (P < 0.05); decreasing the protein levels of MKK3, p53, and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MYD88); and increasing the protein levels of Occludin, ZO-1, and Claudin1. In addition, it reduced the levels of JNK and p38 proteins (P < 0.05) and inflammatory factors like tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the jejunal mucosa of black-boned chickens under heat stress. In conclusion, resveratrol may play a regulatory role in heat-stress-induced damage and inflammatory response in the intestinal mucosa of black-boned chickens under heat stress.

Abstract
The growing interest in countering the adverse effects of heat stress in poultry using phytogenic feed additives has garnered considerable attention in recent times, this research sought to examine the impact of rosemary leaves extract (RLE) and oregano leaves extract (OLE) on the growth performance, physiological responses, and hepatic mRNA expression of heat shock proteins in broiler chickens exposed to heat stress. A total of 150 male Indian River chicks, aged one day, were randomly allocated into five equally sized groups, each consisting of six replicates. The initial group was designated as the control and was provided with the basal diet. The second and third groups (R1 and R2) were administered the basal diet enriched with 50 and 100 mg/kg of rosemary leaves extract (RLE), respectively. The fourth and fifth groups (O1 and O2) were fed the basal diet supplemented with 50 and 100 mg/kg of oregano leaves extract (OLE), respectively. These chicks were reared in a controlled environmental chamber maintained at a temperature of 32±2 °C and relative humidity of 50 ± 5 %. Ferruginol was the leading component in RLE, whereas thymol was the prevalent constituent in OLE. RLE and OLE both have high DPPH• and ABTS•+ antioxidant potential. Among the experimental groups, the fourth group (O1) showed the heaviest live body weight and the lowest feed conversion ratio, indicating improved growth performance. There was a significant reduction in plasma total lipids and LDL-cholesterol levels within the R2 and O2 groups, respectively. Enhanced total antioxidant capacity and an improvement in the T3 hormone were observed in the R1 and R2 groups. In the second and fourth groups, the mRNA expression of hsp70 and 90A were both found to be significantly downregulated, respectively. In conclusion, the addition of 50 mg/kg of oregano leaves extract (OLE) to the diets of heat-stressed broilers resulted in improved hepatic heat shock proteins, along with certain physiological responses, ultimately contributing to enhanced growth performance.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the effect of exposure to heat stress on the HSP70 gene expression pattern ex vivo in chickens. The adult healthy birds (n = 15) grouped into three replicates of n = 5 each were used to isolate peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The PBMCs were subjected to heat stress at 42 °C for 1 h, and cells without heat stress (NHS) were taken as control. The cells were seeded in 24 well plates and incubated in a humidified incubator at 37 °C under 5% CO2 for recovery. HSP70 expression kinetics were evaluated at 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h of the recovery period. Compared with NHS, the expression pattern of HSP70 was upregulated gradually from 0 to 4 h with peak (p < 0.05) expression recorded at 4 h of recovery time. mRNA expression of HSP70 escalated in a time-dependent manner from 0 to 4 h of heat exposure and thereafter exhibited a gradually decreasing pattern till 8 h of the recovery period. The findings from this study highlight the protective role of HSP70 against the deleterious effects of heat stress in chicken PBMCs. Further, the study demonstrates the possible use of PBMCs as a cellular system in assessing the heat stress effect in chickens ex vivo.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute heat stress could induce high mortality and cause huge economic losses in the poultry industry. Although many studies have revealed heat stress-induced injuries of multiple tissues, the main target tissue and molecular mechanism of death under acute heat stress was largely unknown. This study systematically compared the transcriptome data of five main visceral tissues in chickens to reveal the response of multiple tissues to acute heat stress and determine the main target tissue of acute heat stress, further revealing the injuries of main target tissue and their potential mechanism by combing pathological section and qRT-PCR technologies. RESULTS The transcriptome data of five visceral tissues revealed that acute heat stress broadly caused inflammatory response and damaged tissues metabolic homeostasis. Among the five tested visceral tissues, the number of differentially expressed genes in the lung was the highest, and their fold changes were the greatest, indicating that the lung was the main target tissue of acute heat stress. The results of pathological section revealed severe inflammation, emphysema and pulmonary hemorrhage in the lung under acute heat stress. Our study found that some pro-inflammatory genes, including CNTFR, FURIN, CCR6, LIFR and IL20RA, were significantly up-regulated both in the heat-stress and heat-death groups, and their fold changes in the heat-death group were significantly greater than that in the heat-stress group. We also found an anti-inflammatory gene, AvBD9, exhibiting an extremely high expression in the heat-stress group but a low expression in the heat-death group. CONCLUSIONS Our study found that acute heat stress caused multiple tissue injuries broadly and the lung was the main target tissue of acute heat stress in chicken. Acute heat stress caused a severe inflammatory response, emphysema, and pulmonary haemorrhage, The severe inflammatory response in the heat-death group was related to the up-regulation of pro-inflammatory genes and down-regulation of anti-inflammatory genes.

Abstract
Objective Finding natural, handy and efficient nutritional solutions to prevent and mitigate negative effects caused by environmental heat stress and to be applied to large-scale laying hen industry. Research design A 3-weeks trial was conducted on 128 laying hens TETRA-SL LL (50 weeks of age) housed in 8 cages/group, 4 laying hens/cage, 32 laying hens/group, under heat stress conditions (34±1°C). The basal diet on corn and soybean meal was formulated to be isocaloric and isonitrogenic. Compared to Control group diet (C), experimental groups E1 included 1% zinc-enriched yeast; E2 included 2% parsley and E3 included 1% zinc-enriched yeast combined with 2% parsley to minimize the heat stress effects. Methods The parsley and the zinc-enriched yeast were analysed for their chemical composition, total polyphenols, antioxidant capacity, minerals, vitamin E and incorporated into the ration structure. Production parameters, egg quality, biochemical and haematological profiles of blood samples were analysed during the trial. Results A statistically significant (p < 0.05) average egg weight was noticed on E2 and E3 compared to Control group, and also during the 1st week compared to the 2nd and the 3rd experimental weeks. Average daily feed intake values were highly significant (p < 0.001) on E3 group compared to C, E1, E2, and on the 2nd week compared to the 3rd experimental week (p < 0.021). Feed conversion rate was highly significant (p < 0.001) during the 2nd and the 3rd experimental weeks compared to the 1st week. The average daily egg production was highly significant (p < 0.001) within 1st week compared to the 2nd and 3rd weeks. A highly significant (p < 0.001) yolk coloration was noticed on E2 and E3 groups. The malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration decreased significantly (p < 0.05) to all experimental groups compared to Control group during the 14th and 28th days of storage. Conclusion These findings suggest that the two ingredients minimized the heat stress effects on production performance parameters with a demonstrated antioxidant capacity role by delaying the lipid peroxidation during different storage time periods.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to characterize the proteins differentially expressed in the pectoralis major muscle of broilers supplemented with passion fruit seed oil (PFSO) under cyclic heat stress conditions. Ninety one-day-old male chicks were housed in cages arranged in a climatic chamber, where they were kept under cyclic heat stress for eight hours a day from the beginning to the end of the experiment. The birds were divided into two experimental groups, one group supplemented with 0.9% PFSO and a control group (CON) without PFSO supplementation. At 36 days of age, 18 birds were slaughtered to collect muscle samples. From pools of breast fillet samples from each group, proteolytic cleavage of the protein extracts was performed, and later, the peptides were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The 0.9% PFSO supplementation revealed the modulation of 57 proteins in the pectoralis major muscle of broilers exposed to cyclic heat stress. Among them, four proteins were upregulated, and 46 proteins were downregulated. In addition, seven proteins were expressed only in the CON group. These results suggest that PFSO may increase heat tolerance, with a possible reduction in oxidative stress, activation of neuroprotective mechanisms, protection against apoptosis, decrease in inflammatory responses, and regulation of energy metabolism.

Abstract
Severe heat stress can cause human and animal heart failure and sudden death, which is an important issue of public health worldwide. Our previous studies in animals showed that myocardial cells injury was critical in the above process, and Hsp90 induction has a definite anti-myocardial injury effect, especially through aspirin (ASA). But the mechanism has not been fully clarified. In this study, an in vitro heat stress model of chicken primary myocardial cells (CPMCs) most sensitive to heat stress was used to explore the cell injuries and corresponding molecular resistance mechanism. We found that heat stress resulted in serious oxidation stress and calcium overload in mitochondria, which destroyed the mitochondrial structure and function and then triggered the cell death mechanism of CPMCs. Hsp90 was proven to be a central regulator for resisting heat-stress injury in CPMCs mitochondria using its inhibitor and inducer (geldanamycin and ASA), respectively. The mechanism involved that Hsp90 could activate Akt and PKM2 signals to promote Bcl-2 translocation into mitochondria and its phosphorylation, thereby preventing ROS production and subsequent cell apoptosis. In addition, Hsp90 inhibited mitochondrial calcium overload to overcome MPTP opening and MMP suppression through the inhibitory effect of Raf-1-ERK activation on the CREB-IP3R pathway. This study is the first to reveal a pivotal reason for heat-stressed damage in chicken myocardial cells at subcellular level and identify an effective regulator, Hsp90, and its protective mechanisms responsible for maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis.

Abstract
In this study, chlorogenic acid (CGA) was injected into the amniotic cavity of chicken embryos to study the effects of in ovo feeding of CGA on the antioxidant capacity of postnatal broilers. On the 17th day of embryonic age, a total of 300 healthy broiler fertile eggs with similar weights were randomly subjected to five groups as follows; in ovo injection with 0.5 ml CGA at 4 mg/egg (4CGA) or 7 mg/egg (7CGA) or 10 mg/egg (10CGA), or sham-injection with saline (positive control, PC) or no injection (negative control, NC). Each group had six replicates of ten embryos. Six healthy chicks with similar body weights hatched from each replicate were selected and reared until heat stress treatment (35°C ± 1°C, 8 h/d) at 28-42 days of age. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the hatching rate between the groups (p > 0.05). After heat stress treatment, 4CGA group showed an improved intestinal morphology which was demonstrated by a higher villus height in the duodenum and a higher villus height/crypt depth ratio in the jejunum, compared with the NC group (p < 0.05). The antioxidant capacity of chickens was improved by in ovo feeding of CGA since 4CGA decreased the plasma content of malondialdehyde (MDA) (p < 0.05), whereas, it increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and catalase (CAT) activities compared with NC group (p < 0.05). Also, the MDA content of the different injection groups had a quadratic effect, with the 4CGA group having the lowest MDA content (P quadratic < 0.05). In the duodenum, 4CGA injection significantly increased the mRNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase 1 (H O -1), glutathione synthetase (GSS), and SOD1 compared to the NC and PC groups (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of glutathione reductase (GSR) and GPX7 were significantly increased in all CGA-treated groups compared with the PC group (p < 0.05), while the mRNA expression of CAT was significantly increased by 4CGA group than the NC group (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of epigenetic-related genes, ten eleven translocation 1 and 2 (Tet1 and Tet2), and DNA-methyltransferase 3 alpha (DNMT3A) in the duodenum of 4CGA injected group was significantly increased compared with the NC and PC groups (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of Nrf2, SOD1, and Tet2 showed a significant quadratic effects with the 4CGA group having the highest expression (P quadratic < 0.05). In conclusion, in ovo feeding of CGA alleviated heat stress-induced intestinal oxidative damage. Injection with CGA of 4 mg/egg is considered most effective due to its actions in improving intestinal antioxidant capacity, especially in the duodenum. The antioxidant effects of in ovo CGA on postnatal heat-stressed broilers may be related to its regulation of epigenetic mechanisms. Thus, this study provides technical knowledge to support the in ovo feeding of CGA to alleviate oxidative stress in postnatal heat-stressed broilers.

Abstract
This study was conducted on 600 one-day-old male broiler chicks, using a 2 × 6 factorial design (ambient temperature, A x feed additive, F), for a period of 42 days. The chicks assigned to different groups were exposed to thermoneutral (TN, 24 ± 1 °C) and constant heat stress (HT, 36 ± 1 °C) conditions, and were only fed on a basal diet, and a basal diet supplemented with either 100 mg/kg chloramphenicol, 50 IU/kg α-tocopherol, or 200, 400, and 600 mg/kg of cumin essential oil (CEO). The results showed that heat stress adversely affected performance and carcass characteristics, and increased both the mortality rate and footpad lesions. Moreover, constant chronic heat stress showed negative effects on serum biochemistry and the intestinal microbiota, increased antioxidant activity in both the plasma and breast meat, and increased counts of the pathogenic microorganisms in the small intestine. On the other hand, dietary CEO supplementation positively affected these parameters. CEO had a slight effect on performance, carcass characteristics, mortality rate and the incidence of footpad lesions. When compared to the control group, it was determined that CEO generally had a positive effect on lipid peroxidation in the plasma and tissues and decreased antioxidant enzyme activity. Furthermore, CEO positively affected serum biochemistry and counts of beneficial microorganisms in the small intestine.

Abstract
Hyperthermia is clinically applied cancer treatment in conjunction with radio- and/or chemotherapy, in which the tumor volume is exposed to supraphysiological temperatures. Since cells can effectively counteract the effects of hyperthermia by protective measures that are commonly known as the heat stress response, the identification of cellular processes that are essential for surviving hyperthermia could lead to novel treatment strategies that improve its therapeutic effects. Here, we apply a meta-analytic approach to 18 datasets that capture hyperthermia-induced transcriptome alterations in nine different human cancer cell lines. We find, in line with previous reports, that hyperthermia affects multiple processes, including protein folding, cell cycle, mitosis, and cell death, and additionally uncover expression changes of genes involved in KRAS signaling, inflammatory responses, TNF-a signaling and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Interestingly, however, we also find a considerable inter-study variability, and an apparent absence of a 'universal' heat stress response signature, which is likely caused by the differences in experimental conditions. Our results suggest that gene expression alterations after heat stress are driven, to a large extent, by the experimental context, and call for a more extensive, controlled study that examines the effects of key experimental parameters on global gene expression patterns.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with different doses of rosmarinic acid (RA) on the growth performance, serum biochemical indices, liver antioxidant activity, and muscle nutritional component of broiler chickens during 1-20 days of age. A total of 1000 1-day-old Cobb 500 white-feathered broilers were divided into five groups. Each group included four replicates and 50 birds per replicate. The control group was the basic fodder group fed with a basal diet. The experimental groups included four levels of RA (100, 200, 300, and 400 mg/kg RA added to the basal diet, respectively). The results showed that a quadratic increase in final body weight (BW) and average daily gain (ADG) and a quadratic decrease in the feed/gain (F/G) ratio were observed with increasing dietary RA levels. At 200 mg/kg RA supplementation, growth performance was significantly improved. Moreover, under this RA treatment, the highest levels of total protein and globulin were detected in the serum, the activities of total superoxide dismutase and catalase in the liver of broilers were significantly increased, and the malondialdehyde content was significantly decreased, indicating a higher antioxidant capacity of the liver when 200 mg/kg RA was added to the basal diet. The flavor of the muscle meat was improved by dietary supplementation with 200 mg/kg RA. Therefore, adding 200 mg/kg of RA to the diet could significantly improve the growth performance of broilers, improve liver antioxidant capacity, and improve muscle quality, etc. The addition of RA to broiler feed as a natural antioxidant has great prospects.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of supplemental N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) on chronic heat stress-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in the ovaries of growing pullets. A total of 120, 12-wk-old, Hy-Line Brown hens were randomly separated into 4 groups with 6 replicates of 5 birds in each group for 21 d. The 4 treatments were as follows: the CON group and CN group were supplemented with basal diet or basal diet with 1 g/kg NAC, respectively; and the HS group and HSN group were heat-stressed groups supplemented with basal diet or basal diet with 1 g/kg NAC, respectively. The results indicated that the ovaries suffered pathological damage due to chronic heat stress and that NAC effectively ameliorated these changes. Compared with the HS group, antioxidant enzyme activities (including SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, and T-AOC) were enhanced, while the MDA contents and the expression levels of HSP70 were decreased in the HSN group. In addition, NAC upregulated the expression levels of HO-1, SOD2, and GST by upregulating the activity of Nrf2 at different time points to mitigate oxidative stress caused by heat exposure. Simultaneously, NAC attenuated chronic heat stress-induced NF-κB pathway activation and decreased the expression levels of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-8, IL-18, TNF-α, IKK-α, and IFN-γ. Cumulatively, our results indicated that NAC could ameliorate chronic heat stress-induced ovarian damage by upregulating the antioxidative capacity and reducing the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines.

Abstract
The reproductive performance of chicken breeders has significant economic importance in the poultry industry, and sperm motility is an indicator of reproductive performance. This study performed RNA-seq of the testes of Gushi chicken roosters with high and low sperm motility and identified differentially expressed RNAs involved in sperm motility. RNA-seq analysis showed that 73 and 67 differentially expressed mRNAs were up- and downregulated, and 47 and 56 differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs were up- and downregulated, respectively. The genes related to sperm motility and spermatogenesis included KIFC1, KCNK2, and REC8. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that the pathways related to sperm motility included oxidative phosphorylation and glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism. In addition, the MSTRG.15920.1-REC8-MSTRG.11860.2-VWC2 pathway may regulate sperm motility. This study helped elucidate the molecular genetic mechanism of sperm motility in chicken.

Abstract
Rosemary extract (RE) has been used as an antioxidant in cosmetics and food additives, indicating its potential as a feed additive to improve adaptation in high-producing dairy cows. Here, we investigated the effects of RE supplementation on lactation performance and rumen fermentation in high-producing dairy cows. Thirty multiparous cows were blocked into 15 groups based on milk production and were randomly assigned to one of two treatments: 0 or 28 g/d of RE supplementation to the basic diet per cow. The experiment was conducted over a 74-day period, which included an initial two-week adaptation period. We observed significant increases in milk and milk lactose yields following RE supplementation. Somatic cell count tended to decrease by treatment. Additionally, superoxide dismutase concentration significantly increased and malonaldehyde level decreased after RE supplementation. Sequencing of 16S rRNA revealed that RE supplementation significantly affected the microbial composition and decreased the richness of the microbiota. Specifically, the abundance of the genus Prevotella was significantly decreased by RE supplementation and was correlated with volatile fatty acids in the Mantel test, whereas no significant correlation was found for other genera. Our findings provide fundamental information on the potential for RE as a feed additive for dairy cows to improve antioxidant status and enhance propionate generation.

Abstract
The induction of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) potentially mediates meat-quality development under stress conditions. To investigate the effects and mechanism of HSP70 on the meat quality of the pectoralis major (PM) muscles of broilers exposed to pre-slaughter transport, a total of 168 broilers were intraperitoneally injected with L-glutamine (Gln) or saline. Twenty-four hours later, broilers were subjected to transport or held under normal living conditions. The results indicated that acute Gln supplementation significantly increased HSP70 expression in the PM of transported broilers (p < 0.05). The overexpression of HSP70 significantly alleviated the decreases in muscle pH and water-holding capacity and improved the shrinking of muscle fibers induced by transport (p < 0.05). HSP70 induction increased ATP content, decreased the activities of glycolytic enzymes, and lowered the phosphorylation level of AMP-activated protein kinase in transported broilers (p < 0.05). In addition, the overexpression of HSP70 greatly increased total superoxide dismutase and the total antioxidant capability and decreased the levels of reactive oxygen species, malonaldehyde, and carbonyls in the PM of transported broilers (p < 0.05). Overall, this work indicated that HSP70 could effectively improve the meat quality of transported broilers by improving the energy status, inhibiting glycolytic influx, and restoring redox homeostasis.

Abstract
Environmental factors such as stocking density and high temperature can cause oxidative stress and negatively affect the physiological status and meat quality of broiler chickens. Here, we evaluated the effects of heat stress on the growth performance, antioxidant levels, and meat quality of broilers under different stocking densities. A total of 885 28-day-old male broilers (Ross 308) were subjected to five treatments (16, 18, 21, 23, and 26 birds/m2) and exposed to high temperatures (33 °C for 24 h) for 7 days. High stocking density (23 and 26 birds/m2) resulted in significantly decreased body weight (p < 0.01) and superoxide dismutase activity in the blood (p < 0.05) and increased (p < 0.05) rectal temperature and corticosterone. Additionally, the concentrations of heat shock protein 70 and malondialdehyde in the liver were higher in the 26 birds/m2 group (p < 0.05). Similarly, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of breast meat increased linearly as the stocking density increased (p < 0.05). There was increased shear force in breast meat at low stocking density (p < 0.01). Thus, lower stocking density can relieve oxidative stress induced by high temperatures in broilers and improve the antioxidant capacity and quality of breast meat during hot seasons.

High Temperature-Induced Oxidative Stress Affects Systemic Zinc Homeostasis in Broilers by Regulating Zinc Transporters and Metallothionein in the Liver and Jejunum. Abstract
To investigate the change in zinc homeostasis of broilers under heat stress, 512 broiler chickens were raised to the age of 28 days. The broilers were then assigned to heat stress and normal temperature (36.0°C vs. 26.0°C) groups for 7 days. The results showed that oxidative stress induced by high temperature had a negative effect on the growth performance of broilers. Heat stress altered zinc homeostasis and led to a redistribution of zinc in broilers, which was reflected in increased zinc concentrations in the jejunum, liver, and tibia. Upregulation of the expression of the zinc exporter ZnT1 and importers ZIP8 and ZIP14 in the jejunum indicated that more zinc was absorbed and transported from the jejunum into the blood, while the liver increased its capacity to hold zinc through upregulation of metallothionein (MT) expression, which was achieved by reducing ZnT1 expression and upregulating the expression of the importer ZIP3. The pathway was mediated by zinc transporters, but the capacity of MT to chelate and release zinc ions also played a crucial role. The mechanism of alterations in zinc homeostasis under heat stress was revealed by the changes in zinc transporters and MT levels in the intestine and liver. Heat stress also altered cecal microbial diversity and reduced the relative abundances of Bilophila and Dialister. In conclusion, broilers altered systemic zinc homeostasis through the regulation of zinc transporters and MT in the liver and jejunum to resist oxidative stress induced by high temperature.

Abstract
Purpose Progressive corneal edema and endothelial cell loss represent the major corneal complications observed in diabetic patients after intraocular surgery. However, the underlying pathogenesis and potential treatment remain incompletely understood. Methods We used streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetic mice and db/db type 2 diabetic mice as diabetic animal models. These mice were treated with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress agonist thapsigargin; 60-mmHg intraocular pressure (IOP) with the ER stress antagonist 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA); mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1; or reactive oxygen species scavenger N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC). Corneal thickness and endothelial cell density were measured before and after treatment. Human corneal endothelial cells were treated with high glucose with or without 4-PBA. The expression of corneal endothelial- and ER stress–related genes was detected by western blot and immunofluorescence staining. Mitochondrial bioenergetics were measured with an Agilent Seahorse XFp Analyzer. Results In diabetic mice, the appearance of ER stress preceded morphological changes in the corneal endothelium. The persistent ER stress directly caused corneal edema and endothelial cell loss in normal mice. Pharmacological inhibition of ER stress was sufficient to mitigate corneal edema and endothelial cell loss in both diabetic mice after high IOP treatment. Mechanistically, inhibiting ER stress ameliorated the hyperglycemia-induced mitochondrial bioenergetic deficits and improved the barrier and pump functional recovery of the corneal endothelium. When compared with NAC, 4-PBA and SkQ1 exhibited better improvement of corneal edema and endothelial cell loss in diabetic mice. Conclusions Hyperglycemia-induced ER stress contributes to the dysfunction of diabetic corneal endothelium, and inhibiting ER stress may offer therapeutic potential by improving mitochondrial bioenergetics.

Abstract
Heat stress is one of the major environmental stressors challenging the global poultry industry. Identifying the genes responsible for heat tolerance is fundamentally important for direct breeding programs. To uncover the genetic basis underlying the ambient temperature adaptation of chickens, we analyzed a total of 59 whole genomes from indigenous chickens that inhabit South Asian tropical regions and temperate regions from Northern China. We applied FST and π-ratio to scan selective sweeps and identified 34 genes with a signature of positive selection in chickens from tropical regions. Several of these genes are functionally implicated in metabolism (FABP2, RAMP3, SUGCT, and TSHR) and vascular smooth muscle contractility (CAMK2), and they may be associated with adaptation to tropical regions. In particular, we found a missense mutation in thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (41020238:G>A) that shows significant differences in allele frequency between the chicken populations of the two regions. To evaluate whether the missense mutation in TSHR could enhance the heat tolerance of chickens, we constructed segregated chicken populations and conducted heat stress experiments using homozygous mutations (AA) and wild-type (GG) chickens. We found that GG chickens exhibited significantly higher concentrations of alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and creatine kinase than AA chickens under heat stress (35 ± 1°C) conditions (P < 0.05). These results suggest that TSHR (41020238:G>A) can facilitate heat tolerance and adaptation to higher ambient temperature conditions in tropical climates. Overall, our results provide potential candidate genes for molecular breeding of heat-tolerant chickens.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine if synbiotics can function as alternatives to antibiotics in broiler production under heat stress (HS). Day-old broiler chicks (528 birds) were randomly placed in floor pens within 2 identical temperature-controlled rooms (11 birds/pen and 24 pens/room). The pens of each room were evenly divided among 3 treatments (n = 8): basal diet (CON), the basal diet mixed with 50 ppm of bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) or a synbiotic (50 ppm of PoultryStar meUS, SYN). From d 15, room 2 was under thermoneutral (TN) conditions (TN-CON, TN-BMD, and TN-SYN), while HS was applied to room 1 at 32oC for 9 hrs/d (0800 to 1700) (HS-CON, HS-BMD, and HS-SYN). Treatment effects on footpad dermatitis and gait score were measured on 5 birds/pen, and latency to lie (LTL) test was measured on 2 birds/pen at d 27 and d 41; and 1 broiler/pen was sampled on d 28 and d 42, respectively. Body, liver, and spleen weight were determined. Plasma levels of interleukins (IL), heat shock protein 70, immunoglobulin (Ig)Y, liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) enzyme activities were examined. Heat stress suppressed BW and IgY concentrations on both d 28 and d 42, while suppressed plasma IL-6 concentrations, SOD activities, and LTL duration on d 28 only (P < 0.05). Among all treatments, SYN birds had the best foot and skeletal health scores on both d 27 and d 41 (P < 0.05). On d 42, SYN increased BW, and TN-SYN birds had higher relative spleen weight than both TN-BMD and TN-CON birds (P < 0.05). Antibiotic BMD increased BW (P < 0.05) but decreased SOD activities (P < 0.05) on d 42. These results indicate that the SYN supplementation decreases HS negative effect on broilers by improving BW, foot, and skeletal health, while BMD improves BW but also increases oxidative stress in broilers. The data suggest that synbiotic supplement may function as an alternative to antibiotics in broiler production during summer seasons, especially in the tropical and subtropical regions.

Abstract
Simple Summary Much research is devoted to the search for potent alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters in the poultry industry. It is hypothesized that the efficacy of potential alternatives could be influenced by their type and the delivery strategy utilized. Consequently, this study evaluated the efficacy of a commercial essential oil blend across different delivery routes as a potent alternative to in-feed antibiotics in broiler chickens using selected biochemical, immune, and performance parameters. The results provide evidence that the successive delivery of essential oils via in ovo and in-water routes in broiler chickens offers the potential to improve broiler chicken biochemical and antioxidant status. However, the in ovo delivery of essential oil at 0.2 mL dosage (saline + essential oil, dilution ratio—2:1) suffers the limitations of reduced hatchability. Abstract This study evaluated the effect of an essential oil blend and its delivery routes on broiler chicken growth performance, blood biochemistry, intestinal morphology, and immune and antioxidant status. Eggs were incubated and allotted to 3 groups: non-injected group, in ovo saline group, and in ovo essential oil group. On day 18 of incubation, essential oil in saline or saline alone was injected into the amnion. At hatch, chicks were assigned to post-hatch treatment combinations (1) in ovo essential oil + in-water essential oil (in ovo + in-water EO); (2) in ovo essential oil (in ovo EO); (3) in ovo saline; (4) in-water essential oil; (5) in-feed antibiotics (Bacitracin methylene disalicylate) and (6) a negative control (NC; corn-wheat-soybean diet) in 8 replicate cages (6 birds/cage) and raised for 28 day. The in ovo EO group reduced (p < 0.05) chick length and hatchability, all groups recorded no difference in growth performance at 0–28 day. The in ovo + in-water EO treatment reduced (p < 0.05) blood creatine kinase and aspartate aminotransferase levels whilst increasing (p < 0.05) total antioxidant capacity in birds. The in ovo + in-water delivery of EO might represent a potential antibiotic reduction strategy for the poultry industry but more research is needed to address the concern of reduced hatchability.

Abstract
Keap1-Nrf2-ARE and heat shock proteins (Hsps) are important endogenous protection mechanisms initiated by heat stress to play a double protective role for cell adaptation and survival. H9C2 cells and 80 300-day-old specific pathogen-free chickens were randomly divided into the control and tea polyphenol groups and used to establish a heat stress model in vitro and in vivo. This task was conducted to explore the protection and mechanism of tea polyphenols in relieving thermal injury. A supplement with 10 μg/mL tea polyphenols could effectively relieve the heat damage of H9C2 cells at 42°C. Accordingly, weaker granular degeneration, vacuolar degeneration, and nucleus deep staining were shown. A strong antioxidant capacity was manifested in the upregulation of the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) (at 5 h, P < 0.05), Hemeoxygenase-1 mRNA (at 2 h, P < 0.01), superoxide dismutase (SOD) (at 2, 3, and 5 h, P < 0.05), and Nrf2 (at 0 and 5 h, P < 0.01). A high expression of Hsps was reflected in CRYAB at 3 h; Hsp27 at 0, 2, and 3 h (P < 0.01); and Hsp70 at 3 and 5 h (P < 0.01). The supplement with 0.2 g/L tea polyphenols in the drinking water also had a good effect in alleviating the heat stress damage of the myocardial cells of hens at 38°C. Accordingly, light pathological lesions and downregulation of the myocardial injury-related indicators (LDH, CK, CK-MB, and TNF-α) were shown. The mechanism was related to the upregulation of T-AOC (at 0 h, P < 0.05), GSH-PX (at 0.5 d, P < 0.01), SOD (at 0.5 d), and Nrf2 (at 0 d with P < 0.01 and 2 d with P < 0.05) and the induced expression of CRYAB (at 0.5 and 2 d), Hsp27 (at 0, 0.5, and 5 d), and Hsp70 (at 0 and 0.5 d). In conclusion, the tea polyphenols enhanced the antioxidant capacity and induced Hsps to relieve heat stress injury.

Abstract
Simple Summary China produces the largest number of meat-producing geese in the world. However, few studies have investigated the effects of electrical stunning parameters on stunning stress or meat lipid oxidation in geese. We aimed to evaluate the stunning stress and meat lipid oxidation in geese stunned at a high electrical frequency level with different electrical current intensities in a water bath. Stunning the geese at 40 mA resulted in the minimum stunning stress based on the gene expression and hormones released in the hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis. Stunning geese with 40 mA resulted in low stunning stress and lipid oxidation in breast meat (d 2), with moderate antioxidant capacity in the meat of the breast (d 2) and thigh (d 0) as compared with 100 mA. A combination of 40 mA, 500 Hz, 10 s per bird is suitable for the electrical stunning of geese and for the alleviation of stunning stress and meat lipid oxidation. This study may help to alleviate stunning stress and improve meat quality in the geese production industry. Abstract Intensive slaughtering with electrical stunning (ES) is replacing traditional manual slaughtering of geese in China. This study aimed to assess stunning stress and meat lipid oxidation in geese stunned by high-frequency current intensities. Forty male Yangzhou geese, 92 days old, were randomly allocated into five treatments with eight replicates per treatment. The geese in the control group were not stunned, while the other birds were stunned by alternating current (AC) in a water bath. Each bird received a current intensity of 20 mA (E20mA), 40 mA (E40mA), 70 mA (E70mA), or 100 mA (E100mA) for 10 s at 500 Hz. The gene expression of c-jun N-terminal kinase 1 tended to decrease in the E40mA birds (p = 0.08). Stunning with 40 mA resulted in the maximum serum uric acid and urea among the ES groups and decreased serum adrenocorticotropin and creatine kinase (p < 0.01) compared with 70 mA and 100 mA. Increasing the current intensity reduced the diphenylpicrylhydrazyl free radical elimination ability and total-superoxide dismutase linearly in goose breast meat at d 2 and in thigh meat at d 0 (all p < 0.01). Stunning geese with 40 mA at 500 Hz for 10 s could alleviate stunning stress and meat lipid oxidation.

Abstract
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) extract (RE) has multiple pharmacological and biological activities, including the use as a food additive and medicine. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary RE supplementation on the growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant capacity, intestinal morphology, and microbiota of weaning piglets. A total of 192 crossbred weaned piglets [Duroc × (Large White × Landrace)] (initial body weight = 6.65 ± 0.33 kg, weaned days = 23 ± 1 d) were group housed (six pigs per pen; n = 8 pens/treatment). Pigs were fed a corn-soybean meal-based control diet or the basal diet supplemented with 100, 200, or 400 mg/kg RE. Pigs were allowed ad libitum access to fed for 21 d. The growth performance and apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients, and intestinal morphology and antioxidant status were evaluated. The components of the microbial microflora were also determined in the cecal samples. Compared with the control, dietary supplementation with RE increased the final body weight, average daily gain, and average daily feed intake (linear, P = 0.038, 0.016, and 0.009, respectively), and decreased the diarrhea ratio in piglets (linear, P < 0.05). The digestibility of crude protein (linear, P = 0.034) and gross energy (linear, P = 0.046) increased with treatment with RE. Piglets fed RE showed longer villus height (linear, P = 0.037 and 0.028, respectively) and villus height/crypt depth (linear, P = 0.004 and 0.012; quadratic, P = 0.023 and 0.036, respectively) in the jejunum and ileum, in addition to a lesser crypt depth in the jejunum (linear, P = 0.019) and ileum (quadratic, P = 0.042). The addition of RE increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (linear, P = 0.035 and 0.008, respectively) and glutathione peroxidase activity (linear, P = 0.027 and 0.039, respectively) and decreased the content of malondialdehyde (linear, P = 0.041 and 0.013; quadratic, P = 0.023 and 0.005, respectively) in the serum and liver. Dietary RE supplementation, compared with the control, increased the number of Bifidobacterium (linear, P = 0.034) and Bacteroidetes (linear, P = 0.029), while decreased Escherichia coli (linear, P = 0.008; quadratic, P = 0.014) in the cecal contents. Thus, dietary RE supplementation can improve growth performance, nutrient digestibility, antioxidant capacity, intestinal morphology, and the microbiota in weaned piglets, and 200 mg/kg may be considered the optimum dosage.

Abstract
Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary causative agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and causes heavy economic losses to the porcine industry worldwide. In this study, PK-15 cells were infected with PCV2 for 48 h, then harvested and subjected to label-free quantitative proteomic mass spectrometry. In total, 1212 proteins were differentially expressed in PCV2-infected cells compared with mock-infected cells, including 796 upregulated and 416 downregulated proteins. Gene ontology analysis showed that these differentially expressed proteins were involved in biological processes, cellular components and molecular functions, and these categories included cellular processes, environmental information processing, genetic information processing, disease, metabolism, and body systems. Enrichment analysis of the KEGG pathway showed that innate immune responses were significantly enriched. AlphaB-crystallin (CRYAB) interacts with desmin and cytoplasmic actin to prevent protein misfolding and aggregation, helping to maintain cytoskeletal integrity and promoting cell proliferation. In this study, CRYAB was found to effect the replication of PCV2, as verified by qRT-PCR, TCID50 determination and western blot analysis. Overexpression of CRYAB significantly upregulated PCV2 capsid protein and increased viral titers in both PK-15 cells and culture supernatants, whereas the opposite results were obtained in CRYAB knockdown cells. Furthermore, we revealed that the promotion of PCV2 replication by CRYAB was dependent on cell proliferation. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the effect of CRYAB on PCV2 replication and our findings contribute to a greater understanding of the mechanism of PCV2 replication and pathogenesis, as well as the host's response to PCV2 infection.

Abstract
High ambient temperature is one of the major causes of economic losses in the livestock industry. The poultry industry is an integral part of the livestock industry. It faces severe losses due to heat stress (HS). The adverse effects of HS can be seen on production performance, body temperature, intestinal health, appetite hormone regulation, immune responses and oxidative characteristics. It is important to monitor these parameters to identify the HS possessions during rearing so that timely action can be taken to minimize the adverse effects of high ambient temperature. Furthermore, the application of productive methods on farms is equally important. Several strategies have been suggested by researchers. Providing a suitable environment with selective rearing systems along with proper ventilation and hygiene is the basic requirement for all types of livestock reared for animal protein. Supplementation of appropriate feed additive could be useful for improving intestinal absorption and minimizing adverse effects of HS. Selection for breeding heat resistant birds also provide merits for improving the germplasm of the strains. Early age thermal conditioning also helps in developing resistance for HS. The most recent advancement is the supplementation of active substances during incubation. It is expected that these methods may have a potential impact on the poultry industry for creating thermotolerance in the newly hatched chicks. This review highlights the major issues concerning chicken health and suggests the measures to be adopted following the increase in environmental temperature.

Abstract
Heat stress is one of the most challenging environmental stresses affecting domestic animal production, particularly commercial poultry, subsequently causing severe yearly economic losses. Heat stress, a major source of oxidative stress, stimulates mitochondrial oxidative stress and cell dysfunction, leading to cell damage and apoptosis. Cell survival under stress conditions needs urgent response mechanisms and the consequent effective reinitiation of cell functions following stress mitigation. Exposure of cells to heat-stress conditions induces molecules that are ready for mediating cell death and survival signals, and for supporting the cell's tolerance and/or recovery from damage. Heat-shock proteins (HSPs) confer cell protection against heat stress via different mechanisms, including developing thermotolerance, modulating apoptotic and antiapoptotic signaling pathways, and regulating cellular redox conditions. These functions mainly depend on the capacity of HSPs to work as molecular chaperones and to inhibit the aggregation of non-native and misfolded proteins. This review sheds light on the key factors in heat-shock responses for protection against cell damage induced by heat stress in chicken.

Abstract
In order to explore the function of vitamin C (VC) and VC-Na in the relief of heat stress injury in chicken cardiomyocytes, 150 30-day-old specific-pathogen-free chickens were randomly divided into a control group (fed normal drinking water), a VC group (50 μg/mL VC in drinking water), and a VC-Na group (50 μg/mL VC-Na in drinking water). After 7 days of adaptation feeding, the chickens were subjected to heat stress at 40 ± 2 °C and 60%-70% humidity for 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 h, respectively, and the sera and heart tissues of the chickens were collected immediately at the corresponding heat stress time points. The effects of VC and VC-Na supplementation on the relief of chicken myocardial cell injury following heat stress was studied by detecting the levels of LDH, CK, CK-MB, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the sera, and through histopathological analysis and the expression of CRYAB, Hsp27, and Hsp70 in the myocardial cells. The results showed that supplementing with 50 μg/mL VC or VC-Na significantly reduced the levels of LDH, and CK-MB in serum as well as heat-stress-induced granular and vacuolar degeneration, myocardial fiber breakage, and cell necrosis, indicating effective resistance to heat-stress damage. Additionally, the levels of T-AOC in serum were increased in the VC and VC-Na groups, suggesting enhancing of antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, the expression of CRYAB were induced at 0, 3, 5, and 10 h (P < 0.01) in both VC and VC-Na group, and that of Hsp70 were induced at 0 h (P < 0.05) in VC group and at 0, 3, 5, 10 h (P < 0.01) in VC-Na group. Thus, supplementing chicken diets with VC or VC-Na presented heat-stress damage resistance by enhancing antioxidant capacity and inducing expression of CRYAB and Hsp70.

Abstract
The continued use of sub-therapeutic antibiotics as feed additives in the poultry industry improved health and growth performance. However, the resulting antibiotic resistance increasingly becomes a major threat to public health. Probiotics are promising alternatives for the antibiotics used in poultry industry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the probiotic properties of Lactobacillus salivarius as feed additive in chickens. White leghorn chickens were randomly assigned to experimental groups. Effects of Lactobacillus salivarius supplementation on growth performance, resistance to Escherichia coli O78 challenge and heat-stress, and immune response after vaccinated with attenuated infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) vaccine were determined. The results showed that Lactobacillus salivarius supplementation improved growth performance, such as weight and longer shank length, increased relative weights of the immune organs and decreased concentrations of odor-causing compounds. In addition, Lactobacillus salivarius supplementation alleviated organ injury caused by Escherichia coli O78 challenge and heat stress. Furthermore, Lactobacillus salivarius results in enhanced immune response after IBDV vaccine immunization, enhanced specific antibody and IFN-γ production, and lymphocyte proliferation. Our results revealed a tremendous potential of Lactobacillus salivarius as antibiotics' substitute in poultry production.

Abstract
This study investigated whether Glutamine (Gln) could be used as an additive to improve antioxidant capacity in the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers. Two hundred and forty 22-day-old Arbor Acres broilers in the G1, G2, G3, and G4 groups (n = 60 each) were housed in a cyclic hot environment and fed the basal diet with 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% Gln, respectively. Compared with the G1 group, dietary 1.5% Gln increased (p < 0.05) pH and b* values, but decreased (p < 0.05) L* cooking loss, drip loss, and water loss rate in breast meat of heat-stressed broilers. Malondialdehyde levels in the breast muscle were lower (p < 0.05) in 1.0% and 1.5% Gln groups than that of the heat-stress group. Compared with the G1 group, dietary 1.5% Gln increased (p < 0.05) catalase (CAT), glutathione, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px,) and total antioxidant capacity in the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers. Furthermore, the CAT, GSH-Px, HSP70 mRNA expression levels, and HSP70 protein expression levels were increased (p < 0.05) in the G3 and G4 groups compared with the G1 group. In sum, Gln alleviated antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation in the breast muscle of heat-stressed broilers through antioxidant genes and HSP70 pathways.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of dietary resveratrol supplementation on innate immunity and inflammatory responses in the spleen of yellow-feather broilers under heat stress. A total of 288 yellow-feather broilers of 28-day-old were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups with 6 replicates. A thermo-neutral group (TN) (24 ± 2°C) received a basal diet and another 2 heat-stressed groups (37 ± 2°C for 8 h/D and 24 ± 2°C for the remaining time) were fed the basal diet (HT) or basal diet with 500 mg/kg resveratrol (HT+Res) for 14 consecutive days. The results showed that heat stress decreased (P < 0.05) the growth index of thymus, spleen, and bursa of Fabricius, reduced (P < 0.05) the levels of complement C3 and C4 in serum. Heat stress also caused activation of inflammatory immune responses evidenced by increased (P < 0.05) the mRNA abundance of HSP (heat shock protein) 70, toll-like receptor (TLR)1, TLR4, TLR5, myeloid differentiation factor-88 (MyD88), nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 1 (NOD1), Dectin-1, transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1), interleukin (IL)-1, IL-4, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, but decreased the mRNA abundance of interferon (IFN)-γ, activated nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK), and phosphoinositide-3 kinases-protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathways. Dietary supplementation with resveratrol improved (P < 0.05) the growth index of thymus, spleen and bursa Fabricius, and increased (P < 0.05) the serum level of complement C3 under heat stress. In addition, resveratrol reduced (P < 0.05) the mRNA abundance of HSP70, TLR4, TLR5, NOD1, Dectin-1, and TAK1, and inhibited the NF-κB, MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathway via down-regulated the phosphorylation of p65, extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2, c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase and AKT, as well as decreased the inflammatory cytokines expression, including IL-1, IL-4, IL-6, and TNF-α in the spleen under heat stress. Collectively, dietary resveratrol could have beneficial effects to regulate innate immunity and inflammatory response, via inhibiting the activation of NF-κB, MAPK, and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways induced by heat stress in the spleen.
