Abstract
Dental traumas in sports are common and have physical, social, psychological, and economic impacts. The aim of this study was to determine, through a systematic review, the prevalence of dental trauma in contact and non-contact sports. This review was submitted to PROSPERO (CRD42023421206). Included studies addressed the prevalence of dental trauma in young athletes and adults above 18 years, excluding reviews, editorials, symposiums, or those evaluating athletes under 18 years. A literature search was conducted using the databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, LIVIVO, SPORTDiscus, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source (via EBSCO), and Lilacs and BBO, as well as gray literature. Bias risk was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute's Critical Appraisal Checklist. Data were synthesized considering study characteristics, population, sport, and outcomes. R Statistics software was used for all meta-analyses. A total of 1707 articles were identified. After applying eligibility criteria, eight were selected. Three studies, not previously observed, were later added after reading four systematic reviews on a similar topic. Fourteen contact sports and five non-contact sports were analyzed. The prevalence of dental trauma was 11.38% in contact sports and 5.24% in non-contact sports. Regardless of the type of sport, athletes face risks of dental trauma, with contact sports showing higher prevalence. The use of mouthguards is essential across all contact and non-contact sports as a preventive measure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Most of the previous studies in the available literature discussed the time of arrival in general to the healthcare system, while a minority studied the relationship between the type of trauma and arrival. The aim of this retrospective study is to assess the arrival time of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) depending on the urgency of treatment according to Andreasen. MATERIALS AND METHODS This 8-year retrospective study was carried out at the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University Dental Clinic in Zagreb, Croatia. Andreasen's classification was used to define the kind of TDI as well as to divide them by the need for urgent treatment or treatment priorities in three groups: acute, subacute, and delayed. RESULTS The sample consisted of 1040 children (59% male and 41% female) with a median age of 7. Each year, the age group most affected by TDIs was 6-12 years old. While there is a general increase in the prevalence of TDIs overall, there is a decline in TDIs among children aged 6-12 and an increase among preschoolers and adolescents (below 6 and above 12 years old). Throughout the years, 52.73% red/acute and 41.16% yellow/subacute TDIs were not treated on time due to delayed arrival. More patients from Zagreb come in the first 24 h, while more patients from outside Zagreb come to the clinic a month or more after their injuries. Patients which suffered TDI accompanied with soft-tissue injury arrived sooner. CONCLUSIONS It is necessary to introduce monitoring and education of patients under the age of 6 and over 12, as well as their parents/caregivers. New programs should be implemented and new referent centers that specialize in treating TDIs outside of Zagreb should be established.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The ever-increasing human life expectancy has currently resulted in a noticeable rise in the world's older population. Addressing the healthcare needs of the older people has become a significant concern for many countries. Moreover, the older people are particularly vulnerable to traumatic events. This study aimed to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on prehospital care provided by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for trauma-related cases among the older people in Iran. METHODS This retrospective cohort study involved analyzing the medical records of 1,111 older people aged above 60 who experienced traumatic injuries and received pre-hospital emergency services from March 2018 to March 2022. In order to collect the data, the checklist made by the researcher was used and data analysis in SPSS16 was done using the Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS The age group of 60-74 received the highest number of services both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The older men experienced more traumatic events compared to women throughout the study period. The majority of the traumatic events occurred between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. CONCLUSIONS The high prevalence rate of geriatric traumas can be primarily attributed to their physical problems and no control over movements caused by old age, as well as unsafe living conditions. To address these issues, it is suggested that facilities be provided to assist with mobility problems. Moreover, constructing suitable pedestrian bridges and regularly checking neighborhoods and surroundings to identify potential risk factors should be prioritized. Once these risk factors are identified, efforts can be made to adjust and eliminate them, thereby minimizing traumatic events and enhancing a safe and friendly environment for the older people.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Usually, orthodontic movements encompass children and young adult patients, which are more susceptible to the occurrence of traumatic dental injuries. It is necessary to understand whether the effects of orthodontic movements on traumatized teeth could induce pulp necrosis. The aim of this study was to answer the following question: "Do orthodontic movements of traumatized teeth induce dental pulp necrosis?". MATERIAL AND METHODS Searches were performed for studies published up to May 11, 2023, in the MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, SciELO Citation Index, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Grey Literature Report databases, without restriction for language or year of publication. The revised Cochrane risk of bias tools for nonrandomized interventions (ROBINS-I) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. The overall quality of evidence was assessed through the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) tool. RESULTS Of 2671 potentially relevant studies, five were included. Four were classified as having a moderate risk of bias and one as a serious risk of bias. It was reported a higher susceptibility to pulp necrosis in teeth subjected to orthodontic movements with history of trauma involving periodontal tissues. Additionally, orthodontic movements of traumatized teeth with total pulp obliteration had an increased risk of pulp necrosis. GRADE analysis presented a moderate certainty of evidence. CONCLUSIONS An increased risk for pulp necrosis when traumatized teeth are subjected to orthodontic movements was verified. However, this is based on evaluations performed with subjective tests. Further well-designed studies are necessary to confirm this trend. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Clinicians must be aware of the possibility of pulp necrosis. However, endodontic treatment is recommended when verified signs and symptoms of pulp necrosis.

Abstract
Background and Objectives. There is a deficiency of research on orthodontic movements and management strategies for traumatized teeth to avoid further treatment complications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge of Lithuanian orthodontists about dental trauma and the orthodontic management of traumatized teeth. Materials and Methods. Lithuanian orthodontists and orthodontic residents were introduced to the purpose, objectives and questionnaire of the study. The questionnaire was developed based on demographics, the participants' personal experience, specific questions about dental traumas and orthodontic treatment tactics for patients with a history of dental trauma. Results. A total of 54 participants (42 orthodontists and 12 orthodontic residents) completed the survey. The overall response rate was 42.9%. The results of the survey revealed that the largest share of the study participants-61%-stated that they had treated traumatized teeth just a few times during the whole practice. Briefly, 53.7% of respondents inquired about the dental trauma history only if they saw signs of complications. The results of the survey revealed that the frequency of correct answers to questions about dental trauma was 63.7%, and that about the orthodontic treatment of traumatized teeth was 54.9%. It is worth noting that one-third of physicians pointed out the lack of information about the orthodontic management of traumatized teeth. Conclusion. The knowledge of Lithuanian orthodontists and orthodontic residents about dental injuries and the orthodontic treatment of traumatized teeth is insufficient. Further educational training is recommended.

Abstract
This study aimed to describe Traumatic Dental Injuries (TDI) in a child population, with a discussion focused on the impact of non-clinical variables on TDI. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and relational study about TDI in deciduous dentition in a children's hospital was performed. A total of 166 patients were included, of which 51.8% were male and 48.2% were female. Subluxation was the most observed injury (37.5%), and high-severity lesions predominated (60.2%). Regarding non-clinical variables, 89.2% of the patients attended urgent care centers within 24 h, and 43.4% within the first 3 h. Pointed objects were the leading cause of TDI (47%). Most TDIs were concentrated between the ages of 2 and 4 (53.5%). Concerning the place of TDI occurrence, the school (41.6%) was associated with faster urgent dental care attendance, and the home (37.3%) was associated with TDI occurrence in children under 2 years of age. Previous TDI experience (24.1% of patients) did not generate differences in the time interval between the TDI and arrival at the hospital, compared with children without a TDI history. While the behavior of clinical variables agrees with the literature reviewed, several non-clinical variables show wide differences. There is a need to identify the non-clinical variables that can significantly interact with phenomena specific to the study population (social, demographic, and cultural). The study of these variables can be useful in applying health policies. In the group studied, the non-clinical data reveals the need to educate parents or guardians on the importance of timely care in TDI, the long-term consequences of traumatism affecting deciduous dentition, and the implication of the maturation of the child's motor skills in TDI.

Abstract
Background:
Replanted teeth can lead to critical biological conditions involving ankylosis and external root resorption. To prevent these occurrences, antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) and Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBMT) can be used during the postoperative phase.
Case Report:
The present report described the clinical case of a patient, an adult male with the avulsion of teeth #11 and #21. Teeth were stored under dry conditions and replanted 18h after trauma. The pulp was removed before replantation and aPDT was performed using a low power laser (660 nm,100 mW, 9 J) in direct irradiation of the root canal. A passive flexible splint was fixed in place from tooth #13 to #23 for 4 weeks. The PBMT was applied three times a week, for the first 2 months, using the same laser device but with an infrared wavelength (808 nm, 100 mW, 3J). Clinical and radiographic examination supported the assessment of inflammatory/infectious resorption.
Conclusion:
The combination of laser therapy with endodontic procedures for treating traumatized teeth ensured successful clinical and radiographic outcomes at a 2-year follow-up examination.

Abstract
This case report out lines a rare complete intrusion of a permanent, maxillary central incisor (tooth 11) into the nasal cavity, with a late diagnosis and treatment. An eight-year-old boy was referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgery service with absence of tooth 11 after an episode of a fall from his own height. Approximately 50 days after the trauma, the patient presented, with a complaint of obstruction of the right nostril. The clinical examination and tomographic evaluation showed that the tooth had been intruded into the nasal cavity on the right side. The tooth in question was removed under general anesthesia by direct approach through the right nostril. The patient was followed up for approximately one year without complications. This case demonstrates the importance of a detailed evaluation during the first examination after intrusive luxation so the correct diagnosis is made and the correct treatment is performed to avoid greater morbidity and complications for the patient.

Abstract
Background Time elapsed between trauma and treatment greatly influences the prognosis of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs). The aim of this study was to analyze clinical and radiographic findings related to complications of TDIs among patients seeking delayed treatment of such injuries. Materials and Methods 123 permanent teeth with a history of previous TDIs were included in the study. Clinical findings analyzed were the type of fracture, type and number of injured teeth, crown discoloration, and pulpal status of the injured tooth (pulpal diagnosis). The radiographic findings analyzed included pulp canal obliteration (PCO), root resorption (RR), and periapical radiolucency (PR). Statistical analysis included descriptive analysis. Results Tooth discoloration was the most common presenting complaint (53.65%), while fall (48.78%) was the most frequent cause of trauma. The range of time duration between trauma and presentation for treatment was 5 months to 30 years (average time 12.82 years). Pulp necrosis (PN) was the most common complication (90.24%). Almost half of the teeth with PN had fracture injury and discoloration along with a high frequency of PR (78.37%). Even teeth with a normal appearance were found to have a high incidence of PN (76.92%) and PR (53.84%). The crown discoloration was the second most frequent finding (48.78%). Many teeth (41.66%) with vital pulp were also discolored. Most of the teeth (79.31%) with yellowish discoloration and all teeth with brownish discoloration were nonvital. A high frequency of PN (90%) and PR (78.33%) was found in teeth with discoloration. PR was the most common radiographic finding (69.10%), while PCO and RR were observed in 17.88% and 21.13% of teeth, respectively. Conclusion The findings of this study support the fact that delayed treatment of TDIs leads to increased complications. PN was the most common complication followed by tooth discoloration, RR, and PCO among patients seeking delayed treatment after TDIs.

Abstract
The treatment for intrusive dislocation is a clinical challenge and must be started soon after the intrusion injury. The affected tooth or teeth must be extruded by using light forces. This case report of traumatic intrusion of permanent central incisors aims to describe and discuss the process of repositioning the teeth in the dental arch. After a domestic accident, a 10-year-2-month-old boy suffered 11-mm intrusion of the maxillary central incisors along with enamel-dentin fracture and subluxation of the maxillary lateral incisors. Treatment started 2 days after the incident with an orthodontic extrusion of the maxillary central incisors with a fixed edgewise standard appliance. Orthodontic arches were used, and the force vectors were directed to the desired locations for the repositioning of the teeth. The treatment for extrusion and stabilization of the maxillary central incisors lasted 5 months and 22 days. Orthodontic traction with a fixed appliance is an effective procedure for the extrusion of both permanent maxillary central incisors intruded after trauma. Correct diagnosis, a short period between the trauma and the beginning of treatment, and appropriate mechanics were determining factors for a successful treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study sought to assess dental students' training and experiences in addressing traumatic dental injury (TDI), and, more specifically, their knowledge of TDI management in children. METHODS All Year 1 to Year 5 dental students (n = 413; response rate = 72.9%) were invited to participate in an online, self-administered survey, which was based on a validated questionnaire. Quantitative data were analysed via chi-squared test (p < .05) using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software program. RESULTS Only a few students were found to have undergone first-aid training in TDI (19.3%) and to have encountered TDI incidents (10.6%) before. Almost all preclinical and clinical students agreed that TDI constitutes an emergency (97.8% vs. 99.4%, respectively) and that tooth avulsion requires immediate care (97.1% vs. 99.0%, respectively). However, almost half of the students (48.8%) did not know the management protocols for a fractured tooth. Compared with clinical students, a significantly lower percentage of those in preclinical study knew the following: (1) the main cause of TDI, (2) the teeth that most commonly experience avulsion, (3) the management protocols for an avulsed tooth (e.g., handling, transportation and urgency of professional intervention) and (4) the management protocols for a fractured tooth (e.g., appropriate storage medium and need for immediate treatment). Amongst the clinical students, a significantly lower percentage of those in Year 3 knew how to transport and store avulsed and fractured teeth, and which teeth are most likely to experience avulsion. CONCLUSION This study identified areas of TDI education in need of further refinement. Revision of the dental curriculum in terms of design, content, teaching method and delivery time may thus be warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Splinting is an important procedure after avulsion. However, the role of splint stiffness and extension is not fully understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of splint stiffness and extensions on the mobility and stress on an injured tooth under physiological biting load. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three-dimensional (3D) finite element models were created from a cone beam computer tomogram of a patient with normal occlusion. An avulsion injury of the right central incisor was created with a 1000 N load application on the palatal of the injured tooth, causing increased socket width. Splints made from four materials were tested: 0.9 mm diameter wire-composite splint (WCS1), 0.4 mm diameter wire-composite splint (WCS2), 1.0 mm diameter nylon-composite splint (NCS), and a 2 mm high by 0.2 mm thick plastic strip composite splint (PSS). Three splint extensions (involving 6, 5, and 3 teeth) were evaluated. Mobility of the avulsed tooth and the maximum principal stress distributions in the adjacent teeth were calculated. RESULTS The injured incisor tooth mobility was not affected by the splint extensions. The NCS and PSS stabilized the avulsed incisor but allowed, respectively, 10 and 20 times more mobility under horizontal loading than the WCS1, which inhibited most mobility, while the WCS2 allowed double the mobility compared with WCS1. The NCS and PSS allowed more tooth mobility, mainly in the extrusion direction. Splints were 2-3 times more effective in limiting mobility under intrusive loads than extrusive loads. High levels of stress were found at the base of the composite attachments in the adjacent incisors. CONCLUSION Splinting an avulsed tooth to one or two teeth bilaterally using a nylon splint or a plastic strip is appropriate for tooth stabilization and should be recommended over the 0.4mm wire-composite splint, while the 0.9 mm orthodontic wire is too rigid and not recommended.

Abstract
Background Traumatic dental injuries represent nearly 5% of children and adolescents' injuries leading to serious medical and psychological issues. This current study aims to evaluate the prevalence of dental trauma and its potential association with different predisposing factors among 12-and 15-year-old schoolchildren in Lebanon. Materials and Methods 7902 schoolchildren, 3806 male and 4096 female aged 12 years (n = 3985) and 15 years (n = 3917), were recruited by a stratified multistaged randomized cluster sampling method from public and private schools and were clinically examined in a national cross-sectional study. WHO criteria were used to assess anterior permanent teeth; the nature of trauma, the tooth involved, the size of the incisal overjet, and the type of the lip coverage were furthermore assessed. Data regarding age, sex, and causes of TDI were recorded through a structured questionnaire. Results The prevalence of dental trauma to anterior teeth was 10.9%. Maxillary central incisors (83.7%) were commonly affected. The most common type of injury was enamel fracture (68.3%), falls being the main reason (52.5%). Increased overjet (OR = 2.32, p = 0.034), deficient lip coverage (OR = 5.73, p = 0.019), and gender (OR = 5.36, p ≤ 0.001) were significant predisposing factors for dental trauma. Conclusion This research highlighted many predisposing factors for dental trauma that affect commonly the anterior teeth. Based on these results, the implementation of strategic preventive measurements targeting especially the identified risk groups remains crucial.

Abstract
Background Dental trauma is a common dental public health problem, and it affects 20% to 30% of permanent dentition worldwide. Objective To evaluate self-reported dental trauma to permanent anterior teeth and the receipt of dental treatment among male school children. Materials and Methods This cross-sectional study included grade 7 to 9 school children in Dammam/Al-Khobar, the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The participants responded to a pilot-tested self-completion questionnaire which contained questions about experience, types, place, and reasons for dental trauma and the receipt of dental treatment. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were performed. Results There were 258 students in the study with a mean age of 14.29 ± 1.11 years. Dental trauma was experienced by 39.5% of the participants. Tooth fracture (22.7%) was the most common type of dental trauma followed by tooth displacement (8.7%) and complete tooth removal (8%). The most common reason of dental trauma included fall (9.3%) and accidental hit by some objects (8.9). Home (19.8%), school (5%), and playground (4.2%) were reported as common places of dental trauma. Dental treatment was received by 20.5% of the samples. Most participants visited a dental clinic (10.8%) and used self-care at home (7.2%) after dental trauma. Nearly 4.7% of the participants received dental treatment immediately, 5% on the next day, and 2.7% after a month. Multiple logistic regression analyses showed a significant association of monthly family income (odds ratio = 0.44) with dental trauma (P = 0.008). Conclusion Dental trauma was highly prevalent among school children; however, few of them received care/dental treatment. Participants frequently experienced dental trauma due to a fall in their homes. Preventive measures should be taken to prevent dental trauma, reduce its burden, and improve quality of life.
