Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder, exhibiting an upward trend in prevalence. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of Parkinson's disease, temporal trends between 1980 and 2023, and variations in prevalence by location, age, sex, survey period, sociodemographic index (SDI), human development index (HDI), and study characteristics (sample size, diagnostic criteria, and data source). METHODS In this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and Global Health for observational studies that reported Parkinson's disease prevalence in the general population from database inception to Nov 1, 2023. We included studies if they were original observational investigations, had participants from the general population or community-based datasets, and provided numerical data on the prevalence of Parkinson's disease either with 95% CIs or with sufficient information to calculate 95% CIs. Studies were excluded if they were conducted in a specific population, had a sample size smaller than 1000, or were review articles, case reports, protocols, meeting abstracts, letters, comments, short communications, posters, and reports. The publication characteristics (first author and publication year), study location (countries, WHO regions, SDI, and HDI), survey period, study design, diagnostic criteria, data source, participant information, and prevalence data were extracted from articles using a standard form. Two authors independently evaluated eligibility, and discrepancies were resolved through discussion with the third author. We used random effect models to pool estimates with 95% CIs. Estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) was calculated to assess the temporal trend in prevalence of Parkinson's disease. The study was registered with PROSPERO, CRD42022364417. FINDINGS 83 studies from 37 countries were eligible for analysis, with 56 studies providing all-age prevalence, 53 studies reporting age-specific prevalence, and 26 studies providing both all-age and age-specific prevalence. Global pooled prevalence of Parkinson's disease was 1·51 cases per 1000 (95% CI 1·19-1·88), which was higher in males (1·54 cases per 1000 [1·17-1·96]) than in females (1·49 cases per 1000 [1·12-1·92], p=0·030). During different survey periods, the prevalence of Parkinson's disease was 0·90 cases per 1000 (0·48-1·44; 1980-89), 1·38 cases per 1000 (1·17-1·61; 1990-99), 1·18 cases per 1000 (0·77-1·67; 2000-09), and 3·81 cases per 1000 (2·67-5·14; 2010-23). The EAPC of Parkinson's disease prevalence was significantly higher in the period of 2004-23 (EAPC 16·32% [95% CI 6·07-26·58], p=0·0040) than in the period of 1980-2003 (5·30% [0·82-9·79], p=0·022). Statistically significant disparities in prevalence were observed across six WHO regions. Prevalence increased with HDI or SDI. Considerable variations were observed in the pooled prevalence of Parkinson's disease based on different sample sizes or diagnostic criteria. Prevalence also increased with age, reaching 9·34 cases per 1000 (7·26-11·67) among individuals older than 60 years. INTERPRETATION The global prevalence of Parkinson's disease has been increasing since the 1980s, with a more pronounced rise in the past two decades. The prevalence of Parkinson's disease is higher in countries with higher HDI or SDI. It is necessary to conduct more high-quality epidemiological studies on Parkinson's disease, especially in low SDI countries. FUNDING National Nature Science Foundation of China. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The incidence and prevalence of Parkinson's disease are important for public health planning yet there is a lack of representative, up-to-date estimations for France. METHODS For this cross-sectional study, subjects with suspected Parkinson's were identified in the EGB database, a 1/97 random sample of the national healthcare insurance database, linked to the national hospital-discharge summary database. Incidence and prevalence were estimated using a specific definition that included those with a diagnosis (hospitalization or listed as a long-term chronic disease for full reimbursement) and a sensitive definition that also included those with an indicative drug reimbursement profile. Estimations were extrapolated to the national population, standardizing on age and gender. RESULTS According to either the specific or the sensitive definitions, the annual incidence of Parkinson's disease during the study period was respectively 36 and 49 per 100,000 person-years and prevalence in 2010 was 308-410 per 100,000 persons in the population as a whole. According to the age groups 55-64, 65-74, 75-84 and ≥85 years incidence was respectively 33-46, 139-172, 301-363 and 442-560 per 100,000 person-years amongst men and 32-55, 81-117, 203-270 and 251-313 per 100,000 person-years amongst women. The 2010 prevalence stratified by the same age groups was 293-376, 898-1161, 2524-3011 and 3760-4578 per 100,000 persons amongst men and 199-351, 618-889, 1910-2433 and 2504-3263 per 100,000 persons amongst women. CONCLUSIONS The specific and sensitive definitions of disease bracket the true values; the relatively small range indicates that the current study provides good estimations of incidence and prevalence of Parkinson's disease for recent years in France.

Abstract
Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder. We sought to synthesize studies on the prevalence of PD to obtain an overall view of how the prevalence of this disease varies by age, by sex, and by geographic location. We searched MEDLINE and EMBASE for epidemiological studies of PD from 1985 to 2010. Data were analyzed by age group, geographic location, and sex. Geographic location was stratified by the following groups: 1) Asia, 2) Africa, 3) South America, and 4) Europe/North America/Australia. Meta-regression was used to determine whether a significant difference was present between groups. Forty-seven studies were included in the analysis. Meta-analysis of the worldwide data showed a rising prevalence of PD with age (all per 100,000): 41 in 40 to 49 years; 107 in 50 to 59 years; 173 in 55 to 64 years; 428 in 60 to 69 years; 425 in 65 to 74 years; 1087 in 70 to 79 years; and 1903 in older than age 80. A significant difference was seen in prevalence by geographic location only for individuals 70 to 79 years old, with a prevalence of 1,601 in individuals from North America, Europe, and Australia, compared with 646 in individuals from Asia (P < 0.05). A significant difference in prevalence by sex was found only for individuals 50 to 59 years old, with a prevalence of 41 in females and 134 in males (P < 0.05). PD prevalence increases steadily with age. Some differences in prevalence by geographic location and sex can be detected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND General practitioners (GPs) and neurologists are involved in treating headache patients in Portugal. Having migraine themselves might influence the way they perceive and treat migraine patients. OBJECTIVE To identify clinicians' perceptions about migraine, their own headache status and management of their own migraine. METHODS An observational cross-sectional survey of GPs and neurologists using anonymous questionnaires including demographic data, headache and migraine status and migraine perception questions. RESULTS Of 348 respondent physicians, 20% were neurologists and 53% were females with an average age of 48 years. The majority had an interest in migraine and considered it disabling (93%), although 65-85% reported management difficulties, GPs more often than neurologists. Satisfaction with current treatment options was high (69-79%). 63 physicians suffered from migraine and 81% felt it influenced their perception of the disease. Portuguese physicians preferentially treat their own migraines with NSAIDs (33%), analgesics (29%) and triptans (20%). CONCLUSION Portuguese physicians treating migraine patients have realistic perceptions about the disease and those with migraine feel their perception is influenced by their experience. Although reporting management difficulties, the majority of physicians are satisfied with current treatment options for migraine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES There are few data on neurological disorders prevalence from low- and middle-income countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and none specific to the African elderly. We aimed to determined the prevalence of neurological disorders in those aged 70 years and over in a rural African community. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was a cross-sectional two-phased community epidemiological survey set in the rural Hai district of Tanzania. Screening was performed with a validated screening questionnaire with high sensitivity and specificity. Positive responders to screening underwent full neurological history and examination to confirm or refute the presence of neurological disorders and to classify the disorder using the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10). RESULTS Of 2232 participants, there were 384 neurological diagnoses amongst 349 people. The age-adjusted prevalence of people with neurological diagnoses was 154.1 per 1000 (95% CI 139.2-169.1). The age-adjusted prevalence per 1000 of the most common neurological disorders were tremor (48.2), headache (41.8), stroke (23.0), peripheral polyneuropathy (18.6), upper limb mononeuropathy (6.5) and parkinsonism (5.9). CONCLUSIONS This is the first published community-based neurological disorders prevalence study specifically in the elderly in SSA. It reveals a high prevalence of neurological morbidity and demonstrates the contribution neurological disorders make to the non-communicable disease epidemic. This is likely to increase as the population of low-income countries ages constituting a public health dilemma.

Abstract
Reliable data on stroke incidence and prevalence are essential for calculating the burden of stroke and the planning of prevention and treatment of stroke patients. In the current study we have reviewed the published data from EU countries, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland, and provide WHO estimates for stroke incidence and prevalence in these countries. Studies on stroke epidemiology published in peer-reviewed journals during the past 10 years were identified using Medline/PubMed searches, and reviewed using the structure of WHO's stroke component of the WHO InfoBase. WHO estimates for stroke incidence and prevalence for each country were calculated from routine mortality statistics. Rates from studies that met the 'ideal' criteria were compared with WHO's estimates. Forty-four incidence studies and 12 prevalence studies were identified. There were several methodological differences that hampered comparisons of data. WHO stroke estimates were in good agreement with results from 'ideal' stroke population studies. According to the WHO estimates the number of stroke events in these selected countries is likely to increase from 1.1 million per year in 2000 to more than 1.5 million per year in 2025 solely because of the demographic changes. Until better and more stroke studies are available, the WHO stroke estimates may provide the best data for understanding the stroke burden in countries where no stroke data currently exists. A standardized protocol for stroke surveillance is recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide an overview on the prevalence and incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) in selected European countries. BACKGROUND PD is a common disease of unknown etiology. Accurate information on the epidemiology of PD is critical to inform health policy. An aging population will lead to more patients with PD; thus, the high financial burden PD places on society will increase. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic literature search was performed to identify studies on the prevalence and incidence of PD in the following European countries: Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. Only published studies were included. Abstracts, reviews, meta-analyses and letters to the editor were excluded. There were no language restrictions. Data were extracted using a standardized assessment form, and evidence tables were used to systematically report and compare the data. RESULTS Of 39 identified studies, most (87%) reported estimates of PD prevalence rates, while only a few (13%) reported estimates of PD annual incidence rates. Crude prevalence rate estimates ranged from 65.6 per 100,000 to 12,500 per 100,000 and annual incidence estimates ranged from 5 per 100,000 to 346 per 100,000. No publications could be identified for Austria or the Czech Republic. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION The observed variations in prevalence and incidence rates may result from environmental or genetic factors, but might also be a consequence of differences in methodologies for case ascertainment, diagnostic criteria, or age distributions of the study populations. The comparability of existing studies is limited.

Abstract
Abstract
This chapter focuses on peripheral neuropathy, which is the third or fourth most common neurologic disorder, even among the elderly. It begins with a description of the classification system for peripheral neuropathies. Because the underlying etiology or precipitating events of peripheral neuropathy are identifiable for the majority of affected individuals, epidemiologic research has largely focused on descriptive studies of disease frequency or on identifying the factors that modify the influence of the already existing risk factors. Three of the most common neuropathies are covered in detail: diabetic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, and Guillain–Barré syndrome. Each of these conditions is discussed in terms of distribution and risk factors, and is concluded with a discussion of future research directions to address unanswered questions. The chapter emphasizes methodologic approaches that that could be employed to improve the rigor of studies of these conditions.

Abstract
Heart failure occurs principally in the geriatric population and often is associated with severe comorbidity. Comorbid conditions that occur in the geriatric population at a prevalence equal to or greater than that of heart failure itself include the brain failure syndromes (i.e., delirium and dementia), depression, falls, postural hypotension, urinary incontinence, undernutrition, frailty, sensory deprivation, polypharmacy, and lack of social support. The effect of major geriatric comorbidities on the management of patients with heart failure is reviewed.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE An increasing body of literature suggests a role for clinically "silent" cerebrovascular disease in the pathogenesis of cognitive impairment. Such pathology commonly occurs in the absence of stroke. The main aim of the study was to examine neuropsychological impairment associated with cerebrovascular and peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and to compare cognitive deficits with a nonvascular control group. The main hypothesis was that older people with both transient ischemic attack (TIA) and PVD would demonstrate greater cognitive impairment than controls. METHODS A battery of neuropsychological tests was administered to 4 groups of community residents older than 65 years. The groups comprised 25 patients with carotid stenosis and TIA, 25 nonamputees with PVD, 25 patients with stroke, and 25 matched (with the stroke group) controls. RESULTS Stroke patients showed greater impairment than controls in all tests. PVD patients did not perform significantly worse (P<0.05 after Bonferroni correction) than control subjects on any of the neuropsychological tests. However, 25% of PVD patients had scores lying within the bottom 5% of control group scores for attention, calculation, and 1 test of frontal lobe function. TIA patients were more impaired in general intellectual impairment and frontal lobe function than controls. Frontal lobe impairment, suicidal thinking, and age were all independent predictors of global cognitive impairment in the TIA group. Frontal lobe impairment was the only predictor of global cognitive impairment in the PVD group. CONCLUSIONS TIA and PVD patients showed similar patterns of neuropsychological impairment, but TIA may result in more prolonged cognitive impairment, particularly in frontal lobe function. This group may be at increased risk of vascular dementia as well as impulsivity and suicide.
