Prevalence and factors associated with dysmenorrhea in women at child bearing age in the Dschang Health District, West-Cameroon

Exploring the molecular mechanism of Dioscorea alata L. for the treatment of menstrual disorders using network pharmacology and molecular docking

Menstrual disorders (MDs), including premenstrual syndrome, amenorrhea, and dysmenorrhea, affect women globally. Dioscorea alata L., a traditional yam species, has been used medicinally, but its potential in treating MDs remains understudied. This study employs a network pharmacology approach to examine the effects of D. alata's secondary metabolites on MDs via multi-target mechanisms. Compounds were identified from literature and PubChem, while disease-related targets were gathered from GeneCards, DisGeNET, and CTD databases. Swiss target prediction was used to link compounds to targets. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed using STRING, and Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG enrichment analyses were conducted to predict functional pathways. Eighteen bioactive compounds and 120 therapeutic targets specific to MDs were identified. KEGG analysis revealed 20 significant pathways related to menstrual disturbances. Among the 120 targets, TNF α, PPARG, ESR1, and AKT1 were highlighted as key therapeutic targets. Molecular docking showed strong interactions between Daidzein and ESR1, Diosgenin and TNF α, Alatanin and AKT1, and PPARG. The findings suggest that D. alata's bioactive compounds, such as Diosgenin, Daidzein, Genistin, Cycloartane, and Alatanin, could modulate pathways involved in ovarian follicle formation, hormone regulation, estrogen receptor signaling, and the stress-activated MAP kinase pathway. This study provides new insights into the multi-target potential of D. alata for treating menstrual disorders, supporting further investigation and therapeutic development.

The influence of physical activity, body mass index and urinary levels of prostaglandin (PGF2α) with the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the effect of physical activity, body mass index (BMI), and levels of prostaglandins (PGF2α) urine on the occurrence of dysmenorrhea in adolescents.

METHODS

A total of 128 female students included in the study. The study was conducted from January to March 2023 using a cross-sectional design. This study utilized the Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire (MSQ) and gynecological examination with ultrasonography. The urinary prostaglandin (PGF2α) was measured using the enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay (ELISA). Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression test.

RESULTS

The age range of the participants included in the study was 14-17, with a mean age of 15.85 ± 0.65. There was an correlation between physical activity, BMI, and urinary prostaglandin (PGF2α) levels with the incidence of dysmenorrhea in adolescents (p < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, it revealed that underweight, and had a high urinary prostaglandin significant correlated to primary dysmenorrhea with odds ratio 4.78 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.98-11.54) and 4.88 (95% CI 1.98-12.08), respectively. High physical activity and overweight was not associated with incidence of dysmenorrhea in adolescents.

CONCLUSION

This study provides valuable insights into the correlation between physical activity, BMI, and levels of prostaglandins (PGF2α) in urine. A high level of urinary prostaglandin was found to be the most influential factor in the incidence of primary dysmenorrhea in adolescents. By addressing factors associated with dysmenorrhea in adolescents, healthcare professionals can potentially enhance well-being by reducing menstrual pain and encouraging a healthy lifestyle to prevent dysmenorrhea.

Prevalence of dysmenorrhea and associated risk factors among university students in Zimbabwe

BACKGROUND

Dysmenorrhea is an often incapacitating condition that is characterized by painful menstruation and general body malaise. In Zimbabwe, this condition is understudied, and its associated risk factors are poorly understood.

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the prevalence and associated risk factors of dysmenorrhea among female students at Midlands State University in Zimbabwe.

DESIGN

This is a cross-sectional study that employed simple random sampling technique to obtain data from 382 students using pretested and self-administered questionnaires.

METHODS

Data were analyzed using STATA version 16. Associations between dysmenorrhea, menstrual, sociodemographic, and lifestyle characteristics were measured using chi-square test and logistic regression model.

RESULTS

The prevalence of dysmenorrhea was 75.9%, with 28.6% of sufferers describing their pain as severe. Dysmenorrhea significantly affected the school/daily activities of respondents (χ2 = 18.22, p < 0.001). Family history (χ2 = 4.28, p = 0.04), age of menarche (χ2 = 14.8, p < 0.001), regularity of menstrual cycle (χ2 = 18.1, p < 0.001), and parity (χ2 = 8.8, p = 0.03) were associated with the prevalence of dysmenorrhea. The risk of developing dysmenorrhea almost doubled with positive family history (prevalence odds ratio = 1.68 (95% confidence interval: 1.03 to 2.75, p = 0.040)); increased with decrease in age of menarche (prevalence odds ratio = 0.19 (95% confidence interval: 0.10 to 0.45, p < 0.001)) and decreased with increase in parity (prevalence odds ratio = 0.15 (95% confidence interval: 0.03 to 0.82, p = 0.029)). However, the risk was low among those with irregular menstrual cycles (prevalence odds ratio = 0.14 (95% confidence interval: 0.10 to 0.33, p < 0.001)). Physical exercise, smoking, alcohol, and coffee consumption were not associated with the prevalence of dysmenorrhea (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Dysmenorrhea is common among female students at Midlands State University, and it significantly affects their academic activities. Family history, regular menstrual cycle, nulliparity, and lower age of menarche were risk factors. More awareness is recommended including studies on impact and management strategies.
