The Effect of Healthy Mental Lifestyle Package On Sleep Quality, Mental Health, and Lifestyle of Substance Users

Background

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a training package based on the lived experience of substance abusers on sleep problems and mental health.

Materials and Methods

The current study was performed on 70 subjects equally distributed into two groups of control and intervention, Data collection tools included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), and the Basic Adlerian Scales for Interpersonal Success-Adult Form (BASIS-A) Inventory. Data analysis was administered using the independent t-test, paired t-test, and MANCOVA. Statistical significance was considered when the P value < 0.05.

Results

A total of 70 subjects participated in this study; 7 (10.6%) were females and 59 (89.4%) were males, with a mean age of 36.29 ± 8.588 years. The total score of PSQI was 12.48 (±4.206) and 13.16 (±3.397) for control and intervention groups, respectively, and declined to 12.33 (±4.442) and 9.56 (±4.45) after the intervention. The intervention resulted in an improved score for scales of belonging, going along, taking charge, harshness, being liked by all, and striving for perfection. Whereas the total score of the GHQ is reduced for both groups, that in the intervention group showed a higher decrease, which was also statistically significant.

Conclusion

The developed training package successfully improved participants' sleep quality, mental health, and lifestyle.

A qualitative exploration of the role of NGOs in the recovery support for persons with substance use disorders in a low-income African setting

BACKGROUND

In sub-Saharan Africa, most government mental health facilities are under-resourced to cater for the mental health needs of the population, including the provision of treatment and recovery support services for persons with substance use disorders (SUDs). However, in other settings, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play significant roles by complementing governments' efforts in the provision of care for vulnerable groups. Presently, no study exists that examines the contributions of NGOs in the recovery support of individuals with SUDs in the Ghanaian context. This study sets out to explore the role of NGOs in the recovery of persons with SUDs in Ghana.

METHOD

Using a descriptive qualitative design, eight staff (directors and senior recovery practitioners) from eight NGOs in southern Ghana were purposively selected and interviewed face-to-face using semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were audio-taped, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using the thematic analysis within an inductive approach.

RESULTS

The results showed that NGOs provide three main services: treatment of drug addiction (through psychotherapy and recovery capital), re-integration of recovered individuals into society, and advocacy and awareness creation in schools and communities. These efforts are thwarted by limited qualified professionals and inadequate government support.

CONCLUSION

Our results underscore the need for government agencies to collaborate with NGOs involved in the recovery management of persons with SUDs and other mental disorders to complement their efforts in strategizing, designing, and implementing context-appropriate substance misuse prevention and intervention programs and policies in Ghana.

Determinants and prevalence of relapse among patients with substance use disorders: case of Icyizere Psychotherapeutic Centre

BACKGROUND

Relapse to substance use after successful detoxication and rehabilitation is a public health concern worldwide. Forty to sixty percent of persons in general relapsed after completing detoxication and rehabilitation treatments. Although substance use remains a burden in Rwanda, very little is known about relapse among people with substance use disorder (SUD). Hence, this study aimed to examine prevalence and the factors associated with relapse to substance use at Icyizere Psychotherapeutic Centre (IPC), Rwanda.

METHODS

Retrospective, cross-sectional survey was conducted among 391 patients with SUD at IPC. Multiple logistic regression models using STATA version 13 were used to determine the factors associated with relapse among the patients with SUD.

RESULTS

Majority (84.1 %) of the participants were males. More than half (54.1 %) of them were aged between 18 and 30 years with the age average of 33 years (SD = 11.9 years). The results showed a higher prevalence of relapse among patients with SUD (59.9 %). The multivariate analyses indicated that people with SUD living only with their mothers had a greater risk of relapse compared to those with both biological parents [OR = 1.9, 95 % CI (1.02-3.6), p = 0.04]. Patients that were hospitalized between one to three months were more likely (11.2 times) to relapse after treatments compared to those who spent more than three months in hospitalization [OR = 9.2, 95 % CI (1.1-77.6), p = 0.02]. Furthermore, people that used more than two substances had 1.5 greater risk to relapse than those who consumed one substance. Participants were more likely to relapse if they lived with their peers [OR = 2.4, 95 % CI: (1.2-7.8), p = 0.01] or if they lived in a family with conflicts [OR = 2.1, 95 % CI (1.05-9.7), p = 0.02].

CONCLUSIONS

This study is conducted at one institution caring for patients with SUD. The prevalence was 59.9 %. Future studies are recommended to investigate the effectiveness of the existing relapse prevention programs in order to adjust prevention strategies.

Drugs as Soulmates: The Construction and Validation of a 12-Item Soulmate Scale to Measure Substance Addiction and Loneliness

Substance users use substances to tackle psychological stress, frustrations, poor social support and poor-quality relationships. Such experience resembles seeking a soulmate for receiving comfort, a sense of security and satisfaction to relieve feelings of loneliness. Against this backdrop, the study aims to develop a Soulmate Scale to measure substance use and loneliness. Data were collected from 507 drug abusers between 18-71 years of age who were receiving drug addiction treatment in Hong Kong. Both exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted. Results show a valid and reliable scale with three factors: psychological release and shelter, staunch and supportive friendship, and spiritual solace and companionship. This study offers additional support for understanding the drug-taking experience of substance users from their perspective. The Scale provides a useful tool to assess the underlying reasons for substance users to persistently take drugs and formulate corresponding intervention plans to achieve drug abstinence.

Long-term relapse prevention strategies among poly-substance users in Ghana: New insights for clinical practice

In spite of several decades of research and treatment efforts, the rate of relapse to substance abuse remains high, averaging about 75% within a 3- to 6-month duration after treatment. Recent research has focused on exploring contextually relevant relapse prevention approaches. This study explores relapse prevention strategies utilized by individuals to support their abstinence efforts four years after treatment for poly-substance use disorders in a Psychiatric Rehabilitation Unit in Ghana. Using a qualitative exploratory approach (descriptive phenomenology), semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 individuals previously treated for poly-substance use disorders. Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed thematically with an inductive approach. Participants employed a multitude of factors and strategies, including finding a sense of purpose and meaning in life, religious and spiritual engagements, family and social support, and self-initiated schemes to maintain long-term sobriety. Clinicians should collaborate with and thoroughly explore personal, familial, and contextual factors and strategies that support the abstinence efforts of individuals recovering from poly-substance use disorder.
