Understanding Disenfranchised Grief in a Post-COVID-19 World-A Pilot Study of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses in Palliative Care

Disenfranchised grief is a form of grief that remains unacknowledged and unsupported. Building on Doka's foundational concept of disenfranchised grief, the guiding framework for this pilot project was the Knowledge to Action framework. This study is a quantitative cross-sectional web-based survey, which included a validated questionnaire: the Witnessing Disenfranchised Grief Scale. The Witnessing Disenfranchised Grief Scale measures how participants feel their grief is recognized and validated by friends and family versus administrators or supervisors. A χ2 analysis (P < .05) was completed with findings suggesting that palliative care advanced practice registered nurses broadly experienced higher levels of support from witness C types (colleagues, coworkers, family, or friends) when compared with witness A types (supervisors, bosses, or persons with administrative responsibility). A 2-sample t test also demonstrated significance when comparing both witness groups. Overall mean scores were significantly higher (P < .001) in the witness C group (mean, 68.7) versus the witness A group (mean, 51.2). Higher mean scores indicate a higher level of support reported by the participant. The findings affirm that advanced practice registered nurses working in palliative care continue to grieve both death and non-death-related losses and report a higher degree of witnessed grief by their friends, family members, and colleagues. Participants' supervisors, bosses, or administrators provide less grief acknowledgment.

Disenfranchised Grief: Which Grieving Rules Do German Mid-adolescents Hold?

Every society adheres to grieving rules that govern how people experience loss and grief. These are rarely communicated explicitly, which can lead to insecurities in dealing with one's own grief and the grief of others. This is particularly true for adolescents. Based on Doka's concept of disenfranchised grief, this study explores the grieving rules of mid-adolescents. Cross-sectional data collection took place in November and December 2022 at six secondary schools in Germany. A total of 226 adolescents predominantly aged between 14 and 16 years completed the questionnaire. The analysis of the data shows that in some respects, mid-adolescents have similar grieving rules as adults. However, they are more inclusive when it comes to losses of ex-partners, pets and people with intellectual disabilities. Possible sources of (self-)disenfranchisement are parasocial relationships and the duration of grief. Open communication about grieving rules is suggested to prevent possible disenfranchisement.

A Trisonance: Identities of Women Whose Mothers Were Murdered by Their Fathers

The current qualitative study aimed to examine the narrative identities of women bereaved to intimate partner femicide. Eleven adult Israeli female offspring whose biological mothers were murdered by their biological fathers were interviewed for the purpose of this study. Due to the uniqueness of their loss experience and circumstances, participants' identity is narrated as a "trisonance": They are not like their fathers, their mothers, nor as society perceives them. This very particular route for identity reconstruction as a means of psychological survival is discussed in light of the literature on identity construction and bereavement and derives recommendations for practice.

Shattered Voices: Daughters' Meaning Reconstruction in Loss of a Mother to Intimate Partner Homicide

Intimate partner homicide is a major public health concern around the world and the most lethal outcome of domestic violence. Its impact on the surviving bereaved offspring is immense, yet there is a significant gap in the literature regarding the long-term effects of this type of loss. The current qualitative study is aimed at filling this gap. The study used the constructivist paradigm of bereavement as a theoretical background to reveal the meanings constructed by bereaved Israeli daughters whose biological mothers were killed in acts of intimate partner homicide by their biological fathers. Three main themes of meaning emerged from 12 in-depth semi-structured interviews: "destruction of one's home"; "blast injury"; and "in doubt". An examination of the three themes in the current study reveals a deep shatter in participants' world of meaning to its very basic foundations. In light of intense psychological and social forces, the participants constructed and reconstructed such narratives of meaning in a continuous process of meaning making throughout their lives, years, and decades post loss. Derived from the findings are implications for practice. Mental healthcare professionals must attend to this basic shatter with an extreme level of caution, as they help homicide survivors reconstruct a world of meaning shattered by loss. Moreover, the long-lasting effects emphasize an appropriate legal and political involvement; specifically, policy regulations and rights should provide psychosocial care programs that are suited to the needs of offspring co-victims of intimate partner homicide in particular. In light of the strong social influence on participants' loss experience, further efforts are required to raise social awareness about this burning social concern and to fight the stigmatization of co-victims of homicide in general and co-victims of intimate partner homicide in particular.

"Out of the Depths Have I Called Thee": Jewish Israeli Undertakers' Management of Death Anxiety

According to Terror Management Theory, there are three common buffers that minimize the anxiety of mortality salience: affirmation of one's cultural worldview, the self and one's personal values, and one's significance in the context of close personal relationships. The current study aimed to explore the manner by which Jewish Israeli undertakers manage their constant exposure to death and buffer against death anxiety. A deductive and inductive thematic analysis captured a dialectical movement between, and within, two conflicting worldviews participants were engaged in, in their attempt to manage the mortality salience effect they experience and buffer against death anxiety.
