Abstract
A 10 yr old papillon was evaluated for lethargy, inappetence, tachypnea, and labored breathing. Physical examination findings included dehydration, tachypnea, tachycardia, and muffled heart sounds. Thoracic radiographs revealed an enlarged cardiac silhouette. Echocardiography revealed a mild volume of pericardial effusion and no evidence of right atrial tamponade or a cardiac-associated mass. Cytological analysis of the pericardial effusion was consistent with blood. There was no evidence of neoplasia. Coagulation parameters were within normal limits. Initial treatment consisted of pericardiocentesis. A subtotal pericardiectomy was later performed. No surgical complications were noted, and the dog was discharged 2 days following surgery. Results of the histological examination of the pericardium revealed hemangiosarcoma. Treatment with doxorubicin was initiated 12 days after surgery, at which time, pulmonary metastasis was suspected. The dog survived for 18 days after subtotal pericardiectomy, when it was euthanized because of complications presumably related to pulmonary metastatic disease. This is the first published report of primary pericardial hemangiosarcoma. The dog had a short survival time; thus, the response to subtotal pericardiectomy combined with adjuvant doxorubicin treatment could not be determined. Pulmonary metastatic disease was suspected 12 days following surgery. Based on this case report, pericardial hemangiosarcoma carries a guarded prognosis.

Abstract

Abstract
Malignant neoplasms occur commonly in cattle, with lymphosarcoma being the most common. Chondrosarcoma rarely has been described and only in mature cattle. The present report describes a chondrosarcoma of the left scapula of an 8-month-old Holstein steer. Histologic examination of the mass revealed an unencapsulated, multilobular neoplasm composed of neoplastic spindle cells embedded in irregular islands of chondroid matrix, consistent with a diagnosis of chondrosarcoma.

Abstract
An eight-year-old, spayed, female golden retriever was presented with progressive right hindlimb lameness and polyuria/polydipsia. Multiple soft tissue masses were palpable within the hindlimb muscles. A tentative diagnosis of sarcoma was made on fine needle aspiration. A computed tomography scan of the hindlimb and thorax confirmed the presence and location of the masses, none of which were associated with the bones of the hindlimb. In addition, two pulmonary lesions were identified in the right cranial lung lobe. A diagnosis of chondrosarcoma was confirmed on histopathology with a final diagnosis of extraskeletal chondrosarcoma. A high, hindlimb amputation was performed, and chemotherapy was initiated. Polyuria and polydipsia resolved 2 weeks postoperatively. Numerous lung lesions, suspected to be metastases were found on routine followup radiographs, 73 days post surgery after which the dog was lost to follow-up.

Abstract
A 4-year-old, male cat was presented with a fixed, subcutaneous mass in the lumbosacral region. A histopathological examination revealed a well-defined but nonencapsulated neoplasm characterized by a proliferation of predominantly spindle cells, with high mitotic activity. Interspersed between these cells were single cellular elements with chondroid differentiation. Large areas of cartilaginous tissue with foci of endochondral ossification, necrosis and myxoid tissue were also observed within the neoplastic parenchyma. A diagnosis of extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma was made based on the histological pattern - characterized by the coexistence of cartilaginous islands and undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, results of Alcian blue staining at various pH, immunohistochemical reactivity against vimentin and S-100, and the absence of skeletal involvement or other primary tumour sites. Clinical history of the cat excluded traumas, vaccinations or other types of subcutaneous inoculation. Six months on from surgical treatment, neither recurrence nor metastases have been detected.

Abstract
A 5-year-old cross-bred dog was examined with an 8-week history of coughing and a 3-week history of collapsing during exercise. Thoracic radiography revealed moderate right-sided cardiomegaly and a partially mineralized area over the dorsocranial heart base. Echocardiography demonstrated moderate eccentric and concentric right ventricular hypertrophy and a hypoechoic mass in the main pulmonary artery. The owners declined further investigations and the dog died at home 4 days later. Postmortem revealed a primary pulmonary artery chondrosarcoma. This is the first case report of a pulmonary artery chondrosarcoma in a dog and presents another differential diagnosis of syncope in the dog.

Abstract
Eighty-one cases of canine pleural and/or mediastinal effusions were identified from radiography and ultrasonography records reviewed between 1992 and 2000 at the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital, University of Cambridge. All cases had a follow-up period of at least 12 months. Twenty-eight underlying disease processes were associated with pleural and/or mediastinal effusions. The most common disease was pyothorax (13 cases). Other common diseases identified were idiopathic pericardial effusion, cranial mediastinal mass, idiopathic chylothorax, secondary lung metastases and dilated cardiomyopathy. Approximately one-quarter of all cases recovered completely after initial treatment and one-third of all cases either died during, or were euthanased immediately after, completion of the initial investigations.

Abstract
An 18-month-old, entire male German shepherd dog was presented with signs indicative of a caudal abdominal space-occupying mass. A needle-core biopsy of this mass failed to establish a definitive diagnosis, but identified a prominent round-cell component. The dog's condition worsened and euthanasia was performed on humane grounds. Histopathology of the mass revealed a mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.

Abstract
Two miniature Schnauzer dogs were treated for pericardial masses. In one dog the mass consisted of necrotic fat that was attached to the apex of the pericardium by a pedicle. No obvious communication with the abdomen was present. The second dog had a peritoneopericardial hernia associated with a chronic cystic haematoma. In each case the mass was presumed to have arisen following congenital displacement of the omentum into the pericardium. The pericardial mass was removed and subtotal pericardectomy performed in both dogs. Recovery was complete in each case.
