Abstract
ObjectivesTo systematically review research testing nature-based interventions for people living with mild cognitive impairment or dementia, and to report how authors have defined their interventions by presenting a taxonomy of the nature-based interventions.MethodsA conceptual systematic review of research published between 2008 and 2024 investigating nature-based interventions for people living with mild cognitive impairment or dementia was conducted. Three reviewers contributed independently. Exclusion criteria: not specifying if participants had mild cognitive impairment or dementia, only recruiting caregivers, no primary data, study protocols, abstracts, reviews, not peer-reviewed journal articles and any other grey literature. Intervention descriptions within the papers were thematically analysed.ResultsFifty-two articles reporting fifty-one studies were included. The most common interventions were nature virtual reality (VR technology) and gardening. From the definition data, we produced a taxonomy with overarching domains of: (a) Other terms used; (b) Characteristics; (c) Activities. Subdomains included: development or approach, modes of action, location, physical features, and activities. Some interventions could be grouped. Structure and standardisation of the interventions varied, with a lack of clear reporting.ConclusionThis taxonomy provides conceptualisations of nature-based interventions that can be used by future researchers to guide the development, evaluation and reporting of robust interventions in this area.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Horticultural therapy (HT) has been proposed to be an effective intervention for improving the psychosocial well-being of people with dementia and their caregivers. However, constraints such as limited land space in high-density cities, unstable weather, and lack of gardening experience may hamper the delivery of HT to people with dementia and their caregivers. OBJECTIVE This pilot study aimed to examine the feasibility and preliminary effects of a technology-enhanced home-based HT for people with dementia and their caregivers using a hydroponic indoor growing system. METHODS A single-group pre-post design was adopted. A total of 37 dyads of people with dementia and their caregivers participated in 3 weekly face-to-face sessions, followed by 8 weeks of home-based horticultural activities. Outcomes were measured at baseline and postintervention (at week 11), including feasibility outcomes, cognitive function, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and happiness levels of people with dementia. Caregivers' outcomes included positive aspects of caregiving, perceived stress levels, depressive symptoms, caregiver distress, and happiness levels. Semistructured focus group interviews were conducted with the caregivers to further explore their horticultural experience. RESULTS Intervention feasibility was established with a completion rate of 83.78% and an attrition rate of 2.63% (n=1). Significant improvements were detected in caregiver distress (P<.05) and the happiness level of people with dementia (P<.01). The qualitative findings indicated that HT improved the psychological well-being of both people with dementia and caregivers, enhanced the relationships between caregivers and people with dementia, expanded the caregivers' social networks, and enhanced the autobiographical memory of people with dementia. CONCLUSIONS This pilot study provides evidence on the feasibility of using a hydroponic indoor grower to conduct home-based HT for people with dementia and their caregivers. The findings suggest positive effects on the psychological well-being of both people with dementia and their caregivers. Caregivers reported potential positive effects of HT on the autobiographical memory retrieval of people with dementia. Due to the pilot nature of this study, a control group was not employed. Therefore, large-scale randomized controlled trials are encouraged to further confirm the effectiveness of the intervention. Abstract
Background Depression and anxiety are the two most common mental health conditions, that often co-exist and relapse over time. There is a need for sustainable treatment options to address increasing rates of depression and anxiety and reduce the strain on health systems. Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) is a nature-based health intervention that can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, however synthesised evidence of its effectiveness is required to inform commissioning and availability of interventions. Aim The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the effectiveness of STH for reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Method Following PRISMA guidelines and the protocol registered on Prospero (CRD42024542671) a systematic search of scientific databases and grey literature was conducted to identify quantitative studies examining the impact of STH interventions on depression and anxiety outcomes. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they reported on an STH intervention that was led by a trained practitioner, administered to adult populations who were identified as either at risk, with symptoms or diagnosis of depression and/or anxiety and reported on depression or anxiety outcomes measured using validated scales. Data from eligible studies were extracted and analysed using a random effects meta-analysis. Results Seventeen studies were identified for inclusion including four RCTs, ten quasi-experimental studies with comparators and three single group studies. Nine studies reported outcomes for depression only, two for anxiety only and six for both depression and anxiety. Across studies with comparators, meta-analyses revealed large and significant effects in favour of the STH group for depression (SMD= -1.01; p=<.001) and moderate and significant effects in favour of the STH group for anxiety (SMD=-.62; p<.001). There was significant heterogeneity across studies, with high risk of bias, particularly for statistical validity and outcome measure reliability. Conclusions STH interventions have the potential to support existing treatment approaches for depression and anxiety. However, to inform commissioning and upscaling of services, rigorous randomised studies comparing STH to treatment as usual for depression and anxiety are required.

Abstract
Background Older adults are at risk of developing cognitive impairments, and cognitive training is commonly used to enhance cognitive function in this population. The effectiveness of cognitive training is further optimized with the integration of leisure-based activities, such as horticultural therapy. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is a lack of studies examining the effect of integrating virtual reality (VR) with leisure-based activities to provide real-world experiences and enhance cognitive outcomes in older adults. Furthermore, while immersive VR cognitive training has demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing multiple cognitive domains, methodological limitations-such as the absence of control groups or the use of passive controls-hinder the ability to draw conclusive conclusions regarding its comparative effectiveness. Objective This study conducted immersive leisure-based VR cognitive training in community-dwelling older adults to investigate its effectiveness on cognitive and physical functions. We employed an active control group in which participants received well-arranged leisure activities without focusing on cognitive components. Methods This cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted in the community facilities in northern Taiwan between 2022 and 2023. The VR cognitive training group received simulated gardening activities, such as planting, fertilizing, and harvesting, and tasks involving cognitive challenges, such as producing plant essential oils, for 60 min daily, 2 days per week, for 8 weeks. The control group received non-cognitive training. The outcomes evaluated were cognitive function assessed by Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), immediate memory assessed by Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS)-Word List, working memory and mental flexibility assessed by WMS-Digit Span Forward, WMS-Digit Span Backward, and WMG-Digit Span Sequencing (DSS), and physical function assessed by the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Results The study recruited 137 older adults. After VR cognitive training, higher significant improvements were seen in MoCA (p < 0.001), WMS-DSS (p = 0.015), and TUG (0.008*) compared with the control group. Conclusions This study is the first to examine the effects of fully immersive, leisure-based VR cognitive training on cognitive and physical function in community-dwelling older adults, highlighting its potential as a promising tool for promoting health compared to the non-cognitive training commonly used in community facilities.

Abstract
AIM Our study aims to assess the effectiveness of horticultural therapy in improving outcomes in older patients with dementia. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS The included studies comprised randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that aimed to assess the effectiveness of horticultural therapy on cognitive function in older patients with dementia. The study design and data extraction were independently conducted by two investigators, who also evaluated the risk of bias using RoB 2.0. The meta-analysis was carried out using Stata 15.1 software. DATA SOURCES On November 2023, we searched relevant English and Chinese publications in PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI and Wanfang databases. RESULTS The meta-analysis included a total of 9 RCTs, involving 655 older patients diagnosed with dementia. The findings from these studies demonstrated that horticultural therapy had a significant positive impact on various aspects of the patients' well-being when compared to conventional care. Specifically, it was found to improve cognitive function scores, alleviate symptoms of depression, enhance daily activities and enhance overall quality of life. When conducting a subgroup analysis, it was observed that horticultural therapy had a statistically significant effect on cognitive function in older patients with dementia when the intervention frequency was at least two times per week. Furthermore, interventions with a duration of less than 6 months were found to be more effective than those lasting 6 months or longer. Additionally, outdoor horticultural therapy was found to be superior to indoor interventions. Moreover, structured interventions were observed to yield better outcomes compared to non-structured interventions. CONCLUSION More high-quality studies are needed to further corroborate these findings due to the low quality of the included studies. Horticultural therapy has been found to have a significantly positive impact on the cognitive function, depression status, ADL, and quality of life of older patients with dementia. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE We provide references for non-pharmacologic treatment of older patients with dementia. WHAT PROBLEM DID THE STUDY ADDRESS?: This study aimed to measure the efficacy of horticultural therapy in older patients with dementia across four dimensions: cognitive function, depression levels, daily living activities and overall quality of life. WHAT WERE THE MAIN FINDINGS?: In older patients with dementia, horticultural therapy has been proven to have a significant positive impact on cognitive function, depressive status, activities of daily living and quality of life. Abstract
Health-promoting outdoor environments designed for people living with dementia (PLwD) has proved to be an effective non-pharmacological intervention for treatment of symptoms and improved well-being. However, for individuals with Young-Onset Dementia (YOD), who have particular symptoms and needs, the content and design of these environments are underexplored. This study aimed to explore the needs of individuals with YOD in a garden setting, to generate design-related knowledge for 'dementia-friendly' outdoor environments, while contributing to the field of Evidence-Based Design (EBD). An 8-week long nature-based program was carried out in Alnarp's rehabilitation garden, a specifically developed garden based on research from e.g., landscape architecture, environmental psychology and medical science. The study used a triangulation of qualitative methods including six participants with YOD and a multidisciplinary team of five staff members. Content analysis was used for all gathered data, including 17 semi-structured interviews with participants with YOD and with staff. Data collection and analysis was performed based on the evidence-based Quality Evaluation Tool (QET). The study led to a target group adapted version of the QET for people with YOD containing 20 developed environmental qualities for designers to pursue in therapeutic gardens, including the additional quality of Calmness. A progression was noted, as a result of perceived positive effects during the intervention, indicating possible change and development of the group's needs and preferences in the outdoors.

Abstract
Dementia care currently presents a challenge to healthcare providers on many levels. The rapid increase in the number of people with dementia and the costs of care certainly contribute to these challenges. However, managing the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs) has become one of the most significant tasks in providing care and can lead to poor health and well-being outcomes, not only for the people living with dementia (PLWD) but also for those providing their care. Cost-effective, easily implemented, highly adaptable, empirically based alternatives are needed. Interventions such as Horticultural Therapy (HT), which is naturally informed by Montessori-Based Methods for Dementia and sensory reminiscence therapies, meets these qualifying factors. This article, based on a review of current best practices and clinical experience, hopes to provide recommendations for such an intervention along with special considerations for PLWD and adaptations for different acuity levels. With additional safe and effective, person-centered, non-pharmacological interventions available for the complex cognitive and neuropsychiatric manifestations of this disease, a better care milieu can be provided, improving the quality of life for both patients and caregivers. This article also identifies the need for continued research into the synergistic effects of person-centered behavioral and psychosocial interventions combined with environmental approaches to provide the optimal healing environment for those coping with dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gardening and horticultural therapy (HT) has been widely recognised as a multicomponent approach that has affected a broad range of health and well-being outcomes. The aim of this umbrella review and meta-analysis was to compare the findings of previous reviews on the impact of multiple gardening interventions and gardening attributes on different well-being constructs. METHODS Electronic databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to December 2022. Interventional and observational reviews were eligible for inclusion in this umbrella review. Outcome measures included mental well-being, health status and quality of life. The key exposure variables were gardening and horticultural therapy. Narrative synthesis was used to evaluate the overall impact of gardening and HT on study outcomes. For a subsample of studies with available quantitative data, a random effect meta-analysis was conducted. RESULTS This umbrella review included 40 studies (10 interventional studies, 2 observational studies, and 28 mixed interventional and observational studies). The reviewed studies reported an overall positive impact of gardening activities on several measures of mental well-being, quality of life, and health status. Meta-analysis showed a significant and positive effect of gardening and HT activities on well-being (effect size (ES) 0.55, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.23, 0.87, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Evidence from observational and interventional studies supports a positive role for gardening and HT activities on well-being and general health. Interventional studies with horticultural-based therapies were effective in improving well-being and quality of life both in the general population and vulnerable subgroups. The high degree of heterogeneity in the included studies cautions against any direct clinical implications of the study findings.

Abstract
Dementia is on the rise globally and includes complex cognitive and neuropsychiatric manifestations. Prioritizing neuropsychiatric symptom management in persons living with dementia (PLWD) can reduce rates of adverse events and reduce caregiver burden. Therefore, health care providers and caregivers should explore all available therapeutic modalities for PLWD to provide high-quality care to these individuals. The current systematic review synthesizes the evidence concerning the use of therapeutic horticulture (TH) as a nonpharmacological tool for decreasing neuro-psychiatric symptoms, such as agitation and depression, in PLWD. Findings support the use of TH as a low-cost intervention that nurses can use as an important aspect of the care plan for PLWD, particularly in dementia care facilities. Abstract
Introduction One of various non-pharmacological treatments for people with dementia (PwD) is horticultural therapy. The aim of this double-blind, pre- and post-test, pilot study was to examine the effects of horticultural activities (HA) for PwD at a residential and daytime care facility. Whether combining HA with elements drawn from other psychosocial interventions (cognitive stimulation) would maximize any benefits was also newly examined. Materials and methods Twenty-four PwD were involved either in HA, alone (TG1, N = 7) or combined with some cognitive stimulation (TG2, N = 8), or in indoor treatment-as-usual activities (CG, N = 9). Benefits were assessed in terms of general cognitive functioning (for participants with mild-to-moderate dementia), mood, behavioral and psychological symptoms, and quality of life. Results No differences emerged between TG1 and TG2 in any outcome measure, so the two groups were combined (N = 15). Compared with the CG, the TG involved in HA exhibited less frequent and severe behavioral and psychological symptoms and an improved mood after the intervention. Caregivers also reported less distress in the TG after the intervention than in the CG. Considering only PwD with mild-to-moderate dementia, the TG also showed benefits in a measure of general cognitive functioning, and self-reported quality of life, compared with the CG. Discussion Our results further confirm that engaging PwD in participatory HA in contact with natural elements can decrease their dementia symptoms and their caregivers' distress, but also increase PwD's quality of life. Our findings also suggest the need to consider dementia severity when assessing the benefits of horticultural therapy.

Abstract
Introduction Exposure to nature is known to support psychological wellbeing, and can support People with Dementia (PwD). Here we describe a case study conducted at a care facility for PwD to examine the effect of their exposure to nature after intervention to renovate an existing Therapeutic Garden (TG). Changes in frequency of attendance and behavior in the TG were examined. A single case was also considered to assess individual benefits. Materials and methods Twenty-one PwD participated in the study. Their behavior in the TG was observed for 4 weeks before and after the intervention (using behavioral mapping), and measures of individual characteristics (general cognitive functioning, behavioral/neuropsychiatric symptoms, depression, and quality of life) were administered. Results Ten of the 21 PwD visited the TG more often after the intervention, their social behaviors (e.g., talking to others) increased, and their active isolated behavior in the garden (e.g., smelling, touching flowers) tended to increase. The increase in social behavior related to less severe baseline depressive symptoms. Passive isolated behaviors related to more impaired baseline cognitive functioning. The case of Mrs. A extended the findings for the whole sample: although her dementia symptoms (apathy, motor disturbances) worsened, she visited the TG more often after the intervention, her social exchanges and active isolated actions increased, and her agitation and wandering decreased. Discussion These results support the benefits of exposure to nature for PwD, and underscore the importance of considering users' profiles to optimize their use of a TG.

Abstract
BackgroundDepression, an increasing global crisis, has affected many people's daily life, especially for older adults. Horticultural therapy has been widely used in non-pharmacological treatment for patients with depression, with a body of studies demonstrating its therapeutic effects. However, a lack of systematic reviews and meta-analyses makes it difficult to get a holistic picture of this research field.ObjectivesWe aimed to evaluate the reliability of the previous studies and the effectiveness of horticultural therapy (including the intervention of environmental settings, activities, and duration) on older adults with depression.MethodsThis systematic review was conducted under the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) guidelines. We searched relevant studies in multiple databases, and the original search was finished on 25 September 2022. We included studies using randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-experimental designs.ResultsWe yielded a total of 7,366 studies and finally included 13 which involved 698 aged people with depression. Results from meta-analysis indicated significant effects of horticultural therapy on reducing depressive symptoms for the older adults. Besides, we found different outcomes among various horticultural interventions (such as environmental setting, activities, and duration). Depression reduction was more effective in care-providing settings than in community settings; participatory activities were more effective in reducing depression than observational activities; intervention of 4–8 weeks might represent the optimal course of treatment compared to interventions more than 8 weeks in duration.ConclusionWe came up with a comprehensive set of recommendations based on the meta-analysis: aged people in care-providing settings with depression could get the most benefit from horticultural therapy by participating in participatory activities for 4–8 weeks.Systematic review registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?ID=CRD42022363134, identifier CRD42022363134.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Access to outdoor space is widely recommended for people with dementia. However, there is limited information on the occupations of people with dementia within these spaces. We sought to review the research literature to identify the occupations of people with dementia in outdoor spaces in residential aged care and/or hospitals and report on features that support occupational participation as well as the benefits of occupational participation in these spaces. METHODS Scoping review. We searched electronic databases involving health, design, and horticulture literature. Studies were included if they involved people with dementia and considered occupations within gardens or garden-like spaces of hospitals, subacute rehabilitation facilities, or residential aged care. RESULTS We identified 19 articles meeting the review criteria. Outdoor spaces for people with dementia varied in design and supported a range of occupations with the most common being social occupations, gardening, and physical activities. Quantitative studies suggested that benefits of outdoor occupations for people with dementia were improvements in activity participation, social connection, mood, agitation, light exposure, and sleep. Qualitative studies supported these findings and identified additional perceived benefits such as engagement, maintaining identity, health, and reduced levels of distress. Benefits were also reported for families and staff. CONCLUSIONS Current literature shows that many occupations can be done outside and that these are beneficial for people with dementia. Despite the wide range of benefits, multiple studies reported that outdoor spaces remain under-utilised. More work is required to design spaces for occupational engagement, support access to outdoor spaces, and promote occupational participation.

Abstract
Most people living with dementia in the early-to-middle stages live in the community or in their own homes and engagement in enjoyable activities is fundamental to maintaining quality of life and autonomy. Horticulture-based activities are beneficial for the health and well-being for people living with dementia ("PLWD") in residential care settings, yet evidence within community settings, where the majority live, has not been comprehensively synthesized. A mixed studies systematic review protocol was registered and a systematic search conducted to June 2022 across MEDLINE, COCHRANE, Web of Science, Embase, Psycnet, CINAHL, PsycINFO databases, using terms relating to dementia and horticulture. Original studies examining group or individual horticulture-based programs for community-dwelling PLWD were included. Forty-five articles were selected for full review, eight met inclusion criteria and were retained for data extraction. Evidence from three mixed methods, two quantitative, two qualitative, and one case study design, involving a total of 178 community dwelling PLWD, was narratively summarized. Findings revealed that involvement in horticulture-based activities led to positive impacts on engagement, social interactions, and mental and physical well-being in PLWD. No conclusive evidence was found from included studies for improvement in cognitive function. As most studies to date have concentrated on PLWD in long-term care settings, future research should evaluate the effect of these types of activities in a more rigorous intervention design in community settings.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to examine (1) the feasibility of the study procedures (i.e. recruitment, retention, attendance, and assessment completion rates), and (2) the effects of horticultural therapy (HT) on apathy, cognitive ability, quality of life, and functional capacity.Methods: This was a parallel-group, match-paired, randomized controlled trial. Thirty-two participants were allocated to either the experimental or the control group. Data were collected at baseline (T0), immediately postintervention (T1), and 3 months postintervention (T2). The Apathy Evaluation Scale-informant version (AES-I); Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE); Quality of Life in Alzheimer's disease (QoL-AD) scale; Barthel index (BI) were used to measure apathy, cognitive ability, quality of life, and functional capacity, respectively.Results: The recruitment, retention, attendance and assessment completion rates were 22.7%, 87.5%, 100% and 100%, respectively. The between-group differences in AES-I (p = 0.007) and MMSE (p = 0.034) scores were statistically significant at T1. In the experimental group, the AES-I (p = 0.001), MMSE (p = 0.010), and QoL-AD (p = 0.017) scores were significantly different over time. In the post hoc pair-wise analysis, the AES-I scores of the experimental group observed at T1 were significantly lower than that at T0 (p = 0.032). In the control group, the MMSE scores (p = 0.001) were significantly different over time.Conclusion: HT is feasible for residents with dementia and apathy. The HT program effectively reduced apathy and promoted cognitive function, but its effects on quality of life and functional capacity were not observed.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To systematically determine the effectiveness of horticultural therapy (HT) on the physical functioning and psychological health of older people. BACKGROUND With advancing age and increased chronic diseases, older adults are vulnerable to physical deterioration and psychological problems. There is evidence that horticultural therapy (HT) has positive effect among older adults. However, less attention has been devoted to systematically evaluating the physical functioning and psychological health effects of HT in older adults. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted based on the checklist for PRISMA. METHODS The searches were conducted in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane, China Network Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan Fang, and China Science and Technology Journal Database, from their inception until June 2021. Randomised controlled trials published in either English or Chinese were reviewed. The Review Manager 5.4 software was used for meta-analyses. The quality of included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool by two independent researchers. RESULTS Ten studies involving 884 participants were included. Compared with the control group, HT can significantly improve upper body flexibility and aerobic endurance in older adults with cancer. Besides, HT was found to be more effective for promoting emotional functioning and well-being, subjective social functioning, and quality of life among the elderly. The attendance rate for HT was 66%-100%, and no negative events were found. CONCLUSION Horticultural therapy has potentially positive effects on the physical functioning and psychological health of older adults. However, more rigorous randomised controlled trials with larger populations are required to confirm the findings. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE As a safe and promising nonpharmacological intervention, healthcare professionals may consider the HT intervention when caring for older adults with cancer, dementia and frailty.

Abstract
This paper is a systematic review of quantitative studies conducted on the benefits of visiting gardens and gardening therapy for people with dementia (PWD) in an effort to assess the effectiveness of such treatments and obtain information on the most appropriate garden design for this population. This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA) guidelines. Four databases were searched (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Scopus), with no time limits. Out of a total of 480 articles considered, 16 studies were selected for review. In all but two of the studies examined, gardening therapy and the use of therapeutic gardens induced psychophysiological improvements in PWD. The areas showing the greatest effects were Engagement, Agitation, Depression/Mood, Stress, and Medication. It also emerged that interest in this sphere has been growing in the last decade, but there is still a shortage of empirical evidence of the beneficial effects of therapeutic gardens in relation to the type and severity of dementia, and of garden design guidelines. Despite the limited number of studies investigated, the review confirmed the benefits of gardening and therapeutic gardens in PWD. There is nonetheless a need to conduct more quantitative research to support currently-available evidence and generate more information, focusing on garden design criteria, in-garden activities, the type and severity of dementia examined, and effects on caregivers as well as on PWD.

Abstract
Dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological syndrome which has an increasing impact on society, provoking behavioral, cognitive, and functional impairments. AD lacks an effective pharmacological intervention; thereby, non-pharmacological treatments (NPTs) play an important role, as they have been proven to ameliorate AD symptoms. Nevertheless, results associated with NPTs are patient-dependent, and new tools are needed to predict their outcome and to improve their effectiveness. In the present study, 19 patients with AD underwent an NPT for 83.1 ± 38.9 days (mean ± standard deviation). The NPT was a personalized intervention with physical, cognitive, and memory stimulation. The magnetoencephalographic activity was recorded at the beginning and at the end of the NPT to evaluate the neurophysiological state of each patient. Additionally, the cognitive (assessed by means of the Mini-Mental State Examination, MMSE) and behavioral (assessed in terms of the Dementia Behavior Disturbance Scale, DBD-13) status were collected before and after the NPT. We analyzed the interactions between cognitive, behavioral, and neurophysiological data by generating diverse association networks, able to intuitively characterize the relationships between variables of a different nature. Our results suggest that the NPT remarkably changed the structure of the association network, reinforcing the interactions between the DBD-13 and the neurophysiological parameters. We also found that the changes in cognition and behavior are related to the changes in spectral-based neurophysiological parameters. Furthermore, our results support the idea that MEG-derived parameters can predict NPT outcome; specifically, a lesser degree of AD neurophysiological alterations (i.e., neural oscillatory slowing, decreased variety of spectral components, and increased neural signal regularity) predicts a better NPT prognosis. This study provides deeper insights into the relationships between neurophysiology and both, cognitive and behavioral status, proving the potential of network-based methodology as a tool to further understand the complex interactions elicited by NPTs.

Abstract
Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a slow, irreversible, progressive, complex, and fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Available pharmacological treatment, known for almost two decades, does not cure the disease, but only alleviates the symptoms, with various efficacy and different side effects. Therefore, there is an unmet need to find other person-centered or personalized approaches to treat AD.Areas covered: This article describes the application of precision medicine-like approaches utilizing nonpharmacological treatment strategies and the use of natural products in personalized care for patients with AD.Expert opinion: Due to the heterogeneity of disease symptoms, somatic conditions, and patient preferences, there is definitely no "one size fits all" intervention. Therefore, individualized treatment choice is based on dementia stage, medical and psychiatric comorbidity, leading symptoms, patient preferences, and remaining capacity of the patient. In the absence of disease-modifying agents, a patient-centered, multidisciplinary team approach appears to be the best option to alleviate the heavy symptomatic burden in this unfortunate population. Hence, appropriate interventions can be offered along the AD continuum, while a better understanding of personal characteristics might help in establishing optimal individualized treatment, as well as its duration and intensity, to deliver interventions in the most effective ways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research suggests there is a lack of post-diagnostic support to enable people living with dementia to fulfil social and active lives throughout their dementia journey. Gardening has been found to have many benefits for people living with dementia. Although such research is important, most research frames people with dementia as passive recipients of stimulation. Research into the impact of a community-based gardening group, where people living with dementia are active in the development of an outdoor space, is underdeveloped. Knowledge about the impact of participating in such groups is also sparse. The Good Life Club (GLC) was co-developed and evaluated to respond to these gaps. OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this article is to present the findings regarding the impact of attending the GLC on the self-reported well-being for people living with dementia and care partners. METHODS Qualitative data were collected via 22 semi-structured interviews. Fourteen interviews were conducted before the GLC and eight after the GLC. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Dementia Care Mapping data were collected to supplement the interview data. FINDINGS Four key themes were identified. The first was that participants considered having active participation in social life to be a key aspect of living a good life. The second was that the way that the GLC was set up and delivered gave the participants ownership of the GLC and within this they felt able to contribute. The third was the importance of social connectedness and peer support to the well-being of both people living with dementia and care partners. Fourth, positive mood and well-being was directly experienced through gardening. CONCLUSIONS The combination of long-term investment of time and energy to the GLC, ongoing friendships and in-session autonomy act as key ingredients in creating a group that is relaxed, full of humour and highly valued.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically identify and describe studies that have evaluated the impact of gardens and gardening on health and well-being. A secondary objective was to use this evidence to build evidence-based logic models to guide health strategy decision making about gardens and gardening as a non-medical, social prescription. DESIGN Scoping review of the impact of gardens and gardening on health and well-being. Gardens include private spaces and those open to the public or part of hospitals, care homes, hospices or third sector organisations. DATA SOURCES A range of biomedical and health management journals was searched including Medline, CINAHL, Psychinfo, Web of Knowledge, ASSIA, Cochrane, Joanna Briggs, Greenfile, Environment Complete and a number of indicative websites were searched to locate context-specific data and grey literature. We searched from 1990 to November 2019. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA We included research studies (including systematic reviews) that assessed the effect, value or impact of any garden that met the gardening definition. DATA EXTRACTION AND SYNTHESIS Three reviewers jointly screened 50 records by titles and abstracts to ensure calibration. Each record title was screened independently by 2 out of 3 members of the project team and each abstract was screened by 1 member of a team of 3. Random checks on abstract and full-text screening were conducted by a fourth member of the team and any discrepancies were resolved through double-checking and discussion. RESULTS From the 8896 papers located, a total of 77* studies was included. Over 35 validated health, well-being and functional biometric outcome measures were reported. Interventions ranged from viewing gardens, taking part in gardening or undertaking therapeutic activities. The findings demonstrated links between gardens and improved mental well-being, increased physical activity and a reduction in social isolation enabling the development of 2 logic models. CONCLUSIONS Gardens and gardening can improve the health and well-being for people with a range of health and social needs. The benefits of gardens and gardening could be used as a 'social prescription' globally, for people with long-term conditions (LTCs). Our logic models provide an evidence-based illustration that can guide health strategy decision making about the referral of people with LTCs to socially prescribed, non-medical interventions involving gardens and gardening.

Abstract
Recent literature has revealed the positive effect of gardening on human health; however, empirical evidence on the effects of gardening-based programs on psychosocial well-being is scant. This meta-analysis aims to examine the scientific literature on the effect of community gardening or horticultural interventions on a variety of outcomes related to psychosocial well-being, such as social cohesion, networking, social support, and trust. From 383 bibliographic records retrieved (from 1975 to 2019), seven studies with a total of 22 effect sizes were selected on the basis of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Meta-analytic findings on 11 comparisons indicate a positive and moderate effect of horticultural or gardening interventions on psychosocial well-being. Moderation analysis shows a greater effect size in individualistic than collectivistic cultures. A greater effect size was also observed in studies involving community gardening compared to horticultural intervention. Nevertheless, an effect of publication bias and study heterogeneity has been detected. Despite the presence of a large number of qualitative studies on the effect of horticulture/gardening on psychosocial well-being, quantitative studies are lacking. There is a strong need to advance into further high-quality studies on this research topic given that gardening has promising applied implications for human health, the community, and sustainable city management.
