Abstract
The cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between work-related factors, perceived work fatigue (PWF) and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among handicraft artisans. 364 artisans participated in a questionnaire survey, and a structural equation model (SEM) was developed to explore the direct and indirect relationships between these factors using partial least squares analysis. The SEM explained 98.2% of the variance in MSDs and revealed that exposure to biomechanical factors had a direct impact on PWF and MSDs, with PWF mediating the effect of biomechanical factors on MSDs. Additionally, job demand was found to be positively associated with MSDs, while job control and social support reduced the risk of MSDs. The findings underscore the importance of strategic initiatives to mitigate the risk of developing MSDs among artisans. The study also highlights the potential of SEM as a novel framework for understanding the complex pathogenesis of MSDs in occupational health research.Practitioner summary: The study sought to comprehensively examine the intricate relationships among work-related factors, PWF, and MSDs. To achieve this, an SEM approach was employed to capture both direct and indirect relationships between these factors, employing partial least squares analysis. Findings revealed SEM as an innovative framework for understanding the intricate development of MSDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The 'Fit to Dance?' survey has been used in a number of studies to understand the health and wellbeing of dancers. These data have not been collected in Brazil as there is no validated questionnaire available in Brazilian Portuguese, culturally validated in Brazil with a scope as broad and comprehensive as that of 'Fit to Dance?'. OBJECTIVE Translate into Brazilian Portuguese and culturally validate the questionnaire 'Fit to Dance?' in Brazil. METHODS This was a validity and reliability study of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the 'Fit to Dance?' SURVEY The stages of the research were: translation into the target language (Brazilian Portuguese), translation synthesis, translation validation and cross-cultural adaptation by a committee of experts in Dance Medicine and Science (DMS), reverse translation into English, pilot study (test/retest), and final version of the questionnaire. RESULTS The questionnaire was applied to 21 dancers of different dance genres, with an age average of 25 ± 7.0 years. Cronbach's alpha (0.705), ICC (0.984) and Kappa (0.794) results reached adequate values. CONCLUSION The Brazilian Portuguese version of the questionnaire 'Fit to Dance?' is effective, has adequate levels of validity and reliability, and can be used to report injuries and aspects of health and well-being of Brazilian dancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the prevalence and associated factors of musculoskeletal pain among professional dancers who experienced a lapse in group practice due to coronavirus disease 2019. METHODS General characteristics, practice time, region of musculoskeletal pain due to injury using the visual numeric scale (VNS), and causative motion were surveyed among professional dancers. Pain of VNS 0 to 3 was categorized as "no or minor," 4 to 6 was categorized as "moderate," and 7 to 10 was categorized as "severe." The causal motions of musculoskeletal pain were analyzed according to body region. Factors other than motion associated with pain were also analyzed. RESULTS In total, 368 participants were included. In the univariate analysis, age and practice time were positively associated with "moderate" pain. Practice time, dance experience, and postural accuracy were positively associated with "severe" pain, as was performing Korean traditional dance. In the multivariable analysis, practice time, group practice, and age were positively associated with pain of VNS 4 to 10, and practice time, group practice, and Korean traditional dance were positively associated with pain of VNS 7 to 10. CONCLUSION Among the factors related to dancer training, practice time, group practice, and dance type affect the occurrence of pain.

Abstract
Dancing is a demanding form of art that consists of a purposefully selected series of human movements presented in a rhythmic way. However, Dancers represent a medically under-served occupational group who are at high risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Injury prevention among dancers has become challenging due to the dearth of research in the field. Therefore, a cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries among Sri Lankan traditional dancers is vital of need. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the prevalence of common musculoskeletal injuries among university undergraduates who follow Sri Lankan traditional dancing. This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study that included undergraduate students from four local universities. Stratified sampling method was used to select 293 participants and an online questionnaire was used to collect data. Among the three types of traditional dancing styles, many were following Kandyan dancing: 45.1%. Out of the study sample, 190 dancers (64.84%) reported injuries with males indicating the highest rate of injuries (36.87%). The most common injury types reported were strain and sprain. Kandyan dancers reported the highest number of injuries (p<0.025), contributing to the highest rate of injury due to strains (19.45%). Twirls and prolonged mandiya positions are found to be the common mechanisms that cause injuries. Only 10.6% of the participants approached physiotherapy treatments after an injury. According to the findings of the current study, there is a significant rate of dancing-related injuries among Sri Lankan traditional dancers.

Abstract
This work aims to assess footprint parameters in a group of professional ballet dancers and to determine the correlation between the aforementioned parameters and lateralization, stabilometric parameters, pedobarographic parameters and work environment conditions. A group subjected to tests consisted of 44 elite professional ballet dancers and the reference group was composed of 44 students. The test of balance and thrust under feet involved 30 s-long free standing with open eyes on a podographic platform. The research-related analysis was concerned with footprint parameters (foot length and width, Clarke angle, and Weissflog index), stabilometric parameters (path length and ellipse field, mean value of the velocity and deflection of the displacement of the center of the foot pressure on the ground) and pedobarographic parameters (percentage thrust on the right, left foot as well as the front and rear part the foot). Statistically significant differences between the groups were observed in relation to the stabilometric parameters, the percentage pressure of the left forefoot and the right heel, as well as the value of the Clarke angle (p ≤ 0.05). The longitudinal arch of the foot and the width of the foot in ballet dancers are not dependent on the total and professional career duration and weekly training volume.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ballet dancers have a high prevalence of injuries to the lower extremity. Many studies have investigated the relationship between dance injury and risk factors. However, risk factors for lower-extremity injury comparing recreational- and elite-level ballet dancers are scarce. OBJECTIVE To systematically review available original studies to assess risk factors for lower-extremity injury in female ballet dancers between recreational and elite ballet dancers. DATA SOURCES Five online databases [Web of Science, PubMed, OVID (Medline), EBSCO, and ProQuest] were searched systematically. STUDY SELECTION Included studies had an analytic study design published in the past 11 years and investigated an association between potential risk factors and lower-extremity injury in female ballet dancers. STUDY APPRAISAL Assessed independently by 2 reviewers using the Downs and Black (DB) criteria and Oxford Centre of Evidence-Based Medicine. RESULTS Seventeen studies were included. Alignment was a risk factor for lower-extremity injury in both recreational and elite ballet dancers. In elite ballet dancers, poor lumbopelvic movement control, inappropriate transversus abdominis contraction, decreased lower-extremity strength, and poor aerobic fitness were risk factors for lower-extremity injury. In recreational ballet dancers, hypermobility of the hip and ankle and longer training hours were risk factors for lower-extremity injury. Mean DB score was 15.94 (SD 1.57). The majority of studies were retrospective cohort studies or had poor follow-up, with 7 level 2b studies, 6 level 3b studies (cross-sectional), and 4 level 1b studies (prospective cohort with good follow-up). CONCLUSIONS Alignment was identified as a common risk factor for recreational and elite ballet dancers. Other risk factors differed between recreational ballet dancers and elite ballet dancers. Future studies are warranted to use a prospective study design, identify dance level-specific risk factors, and implement evidence-based prevention strategies.

Abstract
Background: Bharatanatyam dance form is an amalgamation of emotion, rhythm, expression, and sculpturesque poses that demand high levels of physical and psychological power during a performance. Objectives: To explore musculoskeletal pain and analyze risk factors in Bharatanatyam dancers. The level of injury risk for the “Natyarambham” posture adopted by dancers was also assessed. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in forty female Bharatanatyam dancers who received a minimum of 5 consecutive years of formal dance training from a recognized dance institute. A self-designed questionnaire comprising of demographic profile, dancing characteristics, presence of musculoskeletal pain, and specific area of pain according to the body region was administered. The injury risk of the “Natyarambham” posture was evaluated using a rapid entire body assessment tool (REBA). Results: Among 40 female dancers, 75% dancers (n = 30/40, 75% [95% CI 0.61, 0.89] reported pain. The most common site of pain was the low back (n = 22/40, 55% [95% CI 0.39, 0.71]). Using Bonferroni correction for multiple independent comparisons, a significant difference was identified between dancers with and without pain for average performances per year (P = 0.028). As per REBA risk level scoring for Natyarambham posture, 62.5% (n = 25/40, 62.5% [95% CI 0.22, 0.53]) dancers were in the category of high-risk level. Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated that the point prevalence of pain in Bharatanatyam dancers is high. Natyarambham posture is considered high risk based on postural assessment.

Abstract
Electrical stimulation modulates sensory feedback and improves motor performance, at least for individuals with compromised sensorimotor function. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a 4-wk intervention with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) at improving strength and balance in dancers. Nineteen dancers completed a timed, single-leg balance test, the Y-balance test, and contractions with the hip flexor and knee extensor muscles to assess maximal strength and force steadiness. They completed 4-wks of moderate-intensity bodyweight exercises (3x/wk) and were pseudo-randomized to either a Treatment or Sham group in a single-blind design. The Treatment group received constant TENS over the hamstring muscles during the exercises, whereas the Sham group was exposed to a brief TENS current. The data were pooled due to few significant between-group differences from before to after the intervention. Most outcome measures significantly improved: hip extensor muscles were stronger (P ≤ 0.01), time stood on a single-leg with eyes closed increased (P = 0.02), and the distance reached during the Y-balance test increased (P ≤ 0.001). The improvement in scores on the Y-balance test exceeded the minimal clinically significant change. Twelve sessions of moderate-intensity bodyweight exercises improved muscle strength and balance in experienced dancers. The addition of TENS, however, did not augment the gains in function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevalence and severity of symptoms related to muscle and joint pain seem to be high in most dancers. HYPOTHESIS There will be a worse quality of life related to foot health for ballet dancers compared with nondancers. STUDY DESIGN Case-control study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level 4. METHODS A sample of 156 women was recruited from a clinic of podiatric medicine and surgery. Self-reported data were measured by the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ), which has 33 questions that assess 8 health domains of the feet and general health, namely, foot pain, foot function, general foot health, footwear, general health, physical activity, social capacity, and vigor. RESULTS Statistically significant differences (P < 0.05) were shown for foot pain, foot function, foot health, and general health, which together revealed a worse foot health-related quality of life (lower FHSQ scores) but a better general health (higher FHSQ scores) for ballet dancers compared with nondancers. The remaining domains did not show statistically significant differences (P > 0.05). According to multivariate linear regression models (P < 0.05), the practice of ballet dance (group) was the only independent variable that predicted the dependent variables, such as foot pain (R2 = 0.052;β = +8.349), foot function (R2 = 0.108; β = +11.699), foot health (R2 = 0.039; β = +10.769), and general health (R2 = 0.019; β = -6.795). CONCLUSION Ballet dancers showed a negative impact on quality of life related to foot health but better overall quality of life (general health) compared with nondancers. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Paying attention to a dancer's foot health could provide important benefits for the dancer's foot health and physical practice of dance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine risk factors for injury in pre-professional modern dancers. DESIGN With prospectively designed screening and injury surveillance, we evaluated four risk factors as categorical predictors of injury: i) hypermobility; ii) dance technique motor-control; iii) muscle tightness; iv) previous injury. Screening and injury data of 180 students enrolled in a university modern dance program were reviewed over 4-yrs of training. Dancers were divided into 3-groups based on predictor scores. Dance exposure was based on hours of technique classes/wk. Negative binomial log-linear analyses were conducted with the four predictors, p < 0.05. RESULTS Dancers with low and high Beighton scores were 1.43 and 1.22 times more likely to sustain injury than dancers with mid-range scores (p ≤ 0.03). Dancers with better technique (low or medium scores) were 0.86 and 0.63 times less likely to sustain injury (p = 0.013 and p < 0.001) compared to those with poor technique. Dancers with one or 2-4 tight muscles were 2.7 and 4.0 times more likely to sustain injury (p ≤ 0.046). Dancers who sustained 2-4 injuries in the previous year were 1.38 times more likely to sustain subsequent injury (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This contributes new information on the value of preseason screening. Dancers with these risk factors may benefit from prevention programs.

Abstract
Background Professional dancers are at significant risk of injury due to the physical demands of their career. Despite their high numbers, the experience of injury in freelance or part-time dancers is not well understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the occurrence and characteristics of injury in part-time compared with full-time Australian professional dancers. Methods Data were collected using a cross-sectional survey distributed to employees of small and large dance companies and freelance dancers in Australia. Statistical comparisons between full-time and part-time dancer demographics, dance training, injury prevalence and characteristics were made using χ2, two-tailed Fisher’s exact tests, independent t-tests and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results A total of 89 full-time and 57 part-time dancers were included for analysis. A higher proportion of full-time dancers (79.8%) than part-time dancers (63.2%) experienced an injury that impacted on their ability to dance in the past 12 months (p=0.035). Injuries characteristics were similar between groups with fatigue being the most cited contributing factor. Part-time dancers took longer to seek treatment while a higher proportion of full-time dancers were unable to dance in any capacity following their injury. Conclusion More full-time dancers sustained an injury in the past 12 months, and were unable to dance in any capacity following their injury. However injuries still commonly occurred in part-time dancers without necessarily a large volume of dance activity. Part-time dancers often access general community clinicians for treatment, who may need additional education to practically advise on appropriate return to dance.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review of case reports documenting the epidemiology of unique and rare musculoskeletal injuries in dancers. A systematic review was conducted online using PubMed and Google Scholar, as per PRISMA guidelines up to July 30, 2016. Predefined eligibility criteria were applied, and the data thus compiled was analysed. Study quality was assessed based on CARE guidelines. 72 studies reporting 92 dance injuries were included in the review. The average age of dancers was 23 years (SD = 10 years) with majority being females (65%). Chronic injuries were the most common presentation with lower extremity injuries being the commonest. Foot and knee injuries were the top two articulations involved across injuries and groups. Overall bony injuries were most frequently reported, with stress injury being the most common type. Conservative approach was the most commonly reported treatment approach across case reports. The methodological quality of case reports included in the study varied considerably and lacked uniformity. The evidence provided, though not sufficient for any recommendation, it should alert the physicians and those concerned with the primary care of the dancers to be vigilant of the eccentricity and severity of the injuries, their atypical presentation, mode, mechanism and trend, thereby being prepared for the unexpected.

Abstract
Background The literature indicated that the majority of professional ballet dancers present static and active dynamic range of motion difference between left and right lower limbs, however, no previous study focused this difference in non-professional ballet dancers. In this study we aimed to evaluate active movements of the hip in non-professional classical dancers. Methods We evaluated 10 non professional ballet dancers (16-23 years old). We measured the active range of motion and flexibility through Well Banks. We compared active range of motion between left and right sides (hip flexion and abduction) and performed correlation between active movements and flexibility. Results There was a small difference between the right and left sides of the hip in relation to the movements of flexion and abduction, which suggest the dominant side of the subjects, however, there was no statistical significance. Bank of Wells test revealed statistical difference only between the 1st and the 3rd measurement. There was no correlation between the movements of the hip (abduction and flexion, right and left sides) with the three test measurements of the bank of Wells. Conclusion There is no imbalance between the sides of the hip with respect to active abduction and flexion movements in non-professional ballet dancers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assemble and synthesize the best evidence on the epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and pain in dancers. DATA SOURCES Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Embase, and other electronic databases were searched from 1966 to 2004 using key words such as dance, dancer, dancing, athletic injuries, occupational injuries, sprains and strains, and musculoskeletal diseases. In addition, the reference lists of relevant studies were examined, specialized journals were hand-searched, and the websites of major dance associations were scanned for relevant information. STUDY SELECTION Citations were screened for relevance using a priori criteria, and relevant studies were critically reviewed for scientific merit by the best evidence synthesis method. After 1865 abstracts were screened, 103 articles were reviewed, and 32 (31%) of these were accepted as scientifically admissible (representing 29 unique studies). DATA EXTRACTION Data from accepted studies were abstracted into evidence tables relating to the prevalence and associated factors, incidence and risk factors, diagnosis, treatment, economic costs, and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries and pain in dancers. DATA SYNTHESIS The scientifically admissible studies consisted of 15 (52%) cohort studies, 13 (45%) cross-sectional studies, and 1 (3%) validation study of a diagnostic assessment tool. There is a high prevalence and incidence of lower extremity and back injuries, with soft tissue and overuse injuries predominating. For example, lifetime prevalence estimates for injury in professional ballet dancers ranged between 40% and 84%, while the point prevalence of minor injury in a diverse group of university and professional ballet and modern dancers was 74%. Several potential risk factors for injury are suggested by the literature, but conclusive evidence for any of these is lacking. There is preliminary evidence that comprehensive injury prevention and management strategies may help decrease the incidence of future injury. CONCLUSIONS The dance medicine literature is young and heterogeneous, limiting our ability to draw consistent conclusions. Nonetheless, the best available evidence suggests that musculoskeletal injury is an important health issue for dancers at all skill levels. Better quality research is needed in this specialized area. Future research would benefit from clear and relevant research questions being addressed with appropriate study designs, use of conceptually valid and clinically meaningful case definitions of injury and pain, and better reporting of studies in line with current scientific standards.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Retrospective descriptive cohort study. OBJECTIVES To describe the distribution and rate of injuries in elite adolescent ballet dancers, and to examine the utility of screening data to distinguish between injured and noninjured dancers. BACKGROUND Adolescent dancers account for most ballet injuries. Limited information exists, however, regarding the distribution of, rate of, and risk factors for, adolescent dance injuries. METHODS AND MEASURES Two hundred four dancers (age, 9-20 years) were screened over 5 years. Screening data were collected at the beginning and injury data were collected at the end of each training year. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize distribution and rate of injuries. Inference statistics were used to examine differences between injured and noninjured dancers. RESULTS Fifty-three percent of injuries occurred in the foot/ankle, 21.6% in the hip, 16.1% in the knee, and 9.4% in the back. Thirty-two to fifty-one percent of the dancers were injured each year, and, over the 5 years, there were 1.09 injuries per 1000 athletic exposures, and 0.77 injuries per 1000 hours of dance. Significant differences between injured and noninjured dancers were limited to current disability scores (P = .007), history of low back pain (P = .017), right foot pronation (P = .005), insufficient right-ankle plantar flexion (P = .037), and lower extremity strength (P = .045). CONCLUSION Distribution of injuries was similar to that of other studies. Injury rates were lower than most reported rates, except when expressed per 1000 hours of dance. Few differences were found between injured and noninjured dancers. These findings should be considered when designing and implementing screening programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Misdiagnosed o sesamoid bone pathology in dancers may result in prolonged pain, disability, and career limitation. A thorough understanding of sesamoid disorders and appropriate treatment facilitates timely recovery. The potential loss of hallux plantar flexion strength consequent to sesamoidectomy is a major consideration for dancers. CASE DESCRIPTION An 18-year-old dance student sustained a delayed-union fracture of her lateral (fibular) sesamoid. Treatment included an inductive coupling external bone stimulator with pulsed electromagnetic field, activity, and weight-bearing restrictions, protective padding, strengthening, functional retraining, and progressive return to dance. OUTCOME Following use of an external bone stimulator for 12 months, the dancer successfully returned to her previous level of dancing. Repeated SF-36 and Dance Functional Outcome System scores confirmed this improvement. DISCUSSION Loss of hallux plantar flexion strength with sesamoid resection can be devastating to a dancer who requires push-off strength for multiple turns and jumps. Treatment with bone stimulation was therefore selected over more invasive measures. The dancer was compliant with systematic functional progression. Improvement, as seen on radiographs and outcome scores, accompanied her full functional recovery.

Abstract
Although dance medicine has derived extensive knowledge from sports medicine, some aspects covered in the practice of dance medicine are unique to this field. Acute and overuse injuries must be analyzed within the scope of associated mechanisms of injury, mainly related to the practice of specific dance techniques. Even though most available medical literature concerning dance medicine is specific to ballet-related conditions, many of the concepts covered here and in other articles can be helpful in the treatment and diagnosis of participants in other dance disciplines. Continued research is expanding the knowledge on injury patterns of different dance disciplines. It is the experience of dance practitioners that dancers are quite in touch with their bodies; thus, when their ailments are systematically analyzed, and underlying cause can usually be identified. In this sense, it is evident that the principles of dance medicine and rehabilitation allow the practitioner to arrive at a diagnosis and treat the underlying causes to prevent reinjury, ameliorate sequelae from injury, and minimize residual deficits after injury.
