Abstract
Orofacial injuries constitute the medico-legal cases reported, especially, in cases associated with road traffic accidents, assaults, and violence making it an emerging healthcare problem. Therefore, it is of interest to document data on the maxillofacial trauma and fractures among Indians. 150 subjects within the age of 15 to 60 years with maxillofacial fractures, detailed medical history including demographics, radiographs, medical history, associated injuries, and etiology of fractures were used for this study. Sites for both maxillary and mandibular fractures were noted. The type of intubation (medical insertion procedure) used and post-operative complications were also recorded. Lefort I, II, and III fractures were seen in 4%, 12%, 6% subjects respectively, whereas, ZMC fracture was seen in 66% study subjects. Mandibular fractures were most commonly seen in the para-symphysis region with 30% subjects followed by condylar region with 28.66% subjects. Data shows that maxillofacial trauma has a high incidence in India with RTA (road traffic accidents being the most common reason for the trauma seen in young males with significant concomitant injuries. Most common fracture is seen in mandible region. However, they can be managed well with very few postoperative complications.

ÖZ
Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı maksillofasiyal bölgede meydana gelen fraktürlerin yaş ve cinsiyete göre dağılımlarını, lokalizasyonlarını, sayısını, deplasman varlığını, radyolojik özelliklerini Konik Işınlı Bilgisayarlı Tomografi (KIBT) ile retrospektif olarak değerlendirmektir.
Gereç ve Yöntemler: Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi, Ağız Diş ve Çene Radyolojisi Anabilim Dalı’na 2019 ve 2021 yılları arasında travma nedeniyle başvuran 84 hastadan alınan KIBT görüntüleri retrospektif olarak incelenmiştir. Yaş, cinsiyet, fraktür lokalizasyonu, fraktürlerde deplasman varlığı kayıt altına alındı. İstatistiksel analiz için tüm hasta grubuna tanımlayıcı ve frekans analizleri uygulanırken, hastaların yaş ve cinsiyetlerini; fraktür hattı ve fraktür bölgesi ile karşılaştırırken ki-kare testi uygulandı.
Bulgular: 60 erkek 24 kadın hasta (E/K, 2,5/1) olmak üzere toplam 84 hastanın maksillofasiyal travma nedeniyle KIBT görüntüsü incelendi. Çalışmada incelenen hasta grubunun yaşları 6 ve 72 arasında değişmekte olup yaş ortalaması 33.17±1.48 olarak belirlendi. Farklı etiyolojik nedenlerden kaynaklı çeşitli lokalizasyonlarda meydana gelen 116 fraktür hattı sayısı radyolojik olarak tespit edildi. İncelenen tüm fraktürlerin 73’ünde deplasman izlenirken kalan 43 fraktür hattında deplasman görülmedi. Meydana gelen fraktürler en sık angulus mandibulada (%22,61:n=19) tespit edildi. En az fraktür mandibula ramus (%3,57; n=3) ve koronoid proseste (%3,57; n=3) görüldü.
Sonuçlar: Fraktür hatlarının varlığının, lokalizasyonlarının ve kırık parçalarının yer değişiminin doğru radyografik teknikler aracılığıyla tespit edilmesi, gerekli tedavi prosedürlerinin uygulanması açısından önem taşımaktadır. İki boyutlu radyografilerin kullanımının yetersiz kaldığı durumlarda KIBT gibi üç boyutlu görüntüleme yöntemleri tercih edilmelidir.

Abstract
Introduction Approximately 3 million facial injuries occur annually, some of which result in maxillofacial fractures. The aim of our study was to evaluate the aetiology and characteristics of maxillofacial fractures presenting to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Methods The medical records for 809 patients treated for maxillofacial fractures were retrospectively reviewed between the dates of 01/01/2016 to 30/06/2017. Results A total of 1381 maxillofacial fractures were recorded. The majority of patients were males (n = 682, 84.3%) with a male:female ratio of 5.59:1. The age group with the highest number of admissions was the 26–50 years age group (n = 395, 48.8%). Assaults was found to be most frequent aetiological factor for maxillofacial fractures in the male cohort and falls was the leading cause of maxillofacial fractures in the female cohort. The most common fractured site in our study was the mandible (n = 599, 43.3%) with the angle and symphysis/parasymphysis regions of the mandible being the most susceptible to injury. Teams that were more frequently involved in the care of these patients included ophthalmology (n = 86) trauma and orthopaedics (n = 53), neurosurgery/neurology (n = 95) teams. Conclusion Socioeconomic status plays a significant role in the aetiology of facial fractures. Furthermore, assaults and falls were found to be the leading aetiological factors for maxillofacial fractures in the male and female cohorts respectively. There is a need to develop strategies in preventing falls in care homes, and addressing violence in young people through public awareness campaigns via the public health sector to reduce the incidence of such fractures. This study reported a male predominance in maxillofacial fractures, with the male:female ratio roughly 5.59:1.2. Roughly 79.23% of all maxillofacial fractures occurred between the ages of 16-50 years. The most common fractured site was the mandibular region, followed by the orbit, and the zygomatic region The most frequent aetiological factor was assault, followed by falls, and road traffic accidents. Patients that live in the most deprived 10% of small areas in England made up 32% of all admissions.

Abstract
Aims To analyze the incidence of maxillofacial fractures due to motor vehicle accidents in Dubai, as well as age, sex, etiology, patterns, treatment, and complications. To compare the findings with similar studies and provide recommendations for the prevention and management of these fractures. Materials and methods A 7-year retrospective study of maxillofacial fractures due to motor vehicle accidents was done. Results We found that most of the accidents took place in December, and the majority of the patients were pedestrians (27%). Male to female ratio was 6:1, and patients in their third decade of life were the most affected (39%). The parasymphysis was the most prominently affected region (27.7%), followed by the orbital bone (18.6%). Open reduction surgery was done in 56% of the cases, and postoperative complications were found in 18.4%. Conclusions Pedestrians were most commonly involved in the accidents. An increase in awareness, trauma centers, and better facilities would perhaps improve the management of such fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Road traffic collisions (RTC) are known to be one of the major causes of maxillofacial trauma (MFT). The road user factor is of crucial importance in the prevalence, severity, and treatment of maxillofacial injuries. The aims of the study were to determine the prevalence of maxillofacial trauma among road users, to illustrate injury patterns and to identify road users at high risk. METHODS This historical prospective multi-center study was based on Israel's Trauma Registry between 2008-2018, which included 4829 hospitalized patients following RTC with MFT. Data were analyzed according to six road user types (vehicle driver, passenger, bicyclist, motorcyclist, pedestrian, and e-bike/scooter), maxillofacial injury location, and maxillofacial treatment. RESULTS MFT, which accounted for 5% of the hospitalized RTC injuries, was not equally distributed among road users, as bicyclists and e-bike/scooters were more prone to maxillofacial trauma (7.2% and 10.1%, respectively) than vehicle drivers (3.2%). Children (age 0-14 years) comprised almost half of the cyclists, 25% of the pedestrians and 20% of the passengers. Some MFT patients experienced multiple injuries, with the majority involving jaw and facial bones and to a lesser extent the mouth, teeth, gingivae, and alveolar bone (mouth and dento-alveolar (DA) trauma). Approximately 30% of hospitalized road casualties with MFT underwent MF surgery, with the need for surgery lowest among pedestrians. CONCLUSION Hospitalized road casualties had different types of MFT in terms of prevalence, location, severity, and treatment, depending on the road user type.

Abstract
In developed countries, violence is the main cause of oral maxillofacial (OMF) injuries. In Brazil, there are scant records of such lesions. The scope of this study was to detail the OMF injuries resulting from physical aggression in a capital of the Brazilian northeast and analyze gender differences. The Forensic Medicine Institute of São Luís, state of Maranhão, featured 15,847 reports, which occurred in 2012, and they were investigated. Socioeconomic, demographic data and OMF characteristics were analyzed. The Chi-square and Fisher's Exact tests were applied to assess gender differences. Of the cases examined, 1977 were OMF. Female victims, aged 20-59, dark-skinned, without a partner and maids were the most affected. Ecchymosis-type lesions, in the mouth and lip regions arising from the use of blunt instruments, causing permanent functional impairment, were the most prevalent in women (P < 0.05), whereas dental fracture and contusion arising from sharp instruments causing permanent deformity, occupational disability, and threat to life were detected in men (P < 0.05). The conclusion drawn is that the incidence of OMF due to physical aggression is high in São Luís, state of Maranhão, and although women are the most affected, the OMF in men are more severe.

Abstract
Road infrastructure sustainability is directly associated with the safety of human beings. As a transportation engineer and policymaker, it is necessary to optimize the funding mechanism for road safety improvement by identifying problematic road segments. Infrastructure improvement is one of the key targets for efficient road safety management. In this study, data envelopment analysis (DEA) technique has been applied in combination with a geographical information system (GIS) to evaluate the risk level of problematic segments of a 100 km-long motorway (M-2) section. Secondly, the cross efficient method has been used to rank the risky segments for prioritization and distribution of funding to improve the road safety situation. This study will help in efficiently identifying the risky segments for safety improvement and budget allocation prioritization. GIS map will further improve the visualization and visibility of problematic segments to easily locate the riskiest segments of the motorway.

Abstract
Three-dimensional imaging methods have an important role in the diagnosis of dentomaxillofacial fractures that can not be seen on the plain films. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is one of the three-dimensional imaging methods and has facilitated dental professionals' access to cross-sectional imaging. CBCT units allow different technical parameters and the data acquired by CBCT, can be reformatted. Osseous structures are correctly examined with this technique but the technique is not useful for the examination of soft tissues. Therefore, the purpose of its use should be based on the expected diagnostic gain. The aim of this review is to present the use of CBCT with different multi-planar reformatted sections and three-dimensional reconstructions of dentoalveolar and mandibular fractures.

Abstract
Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among the Indian population. Motorcycle accidents are the most prominent type of injuries among road traffic accidents in India. In this prospective cross-sectional study, all the patients attending three centers in north Bangalore, with facial injuries occurring from a motorcycle accident, were included. The subjects were analyzed for the type of collision, helmet use, type of helmet use, and fastening status of the helmets. A total of 311 motorcyclists were included in this study for a period of 18 months (December 2015 to June 2017). There were 79.7% males and 20.3% females. The most prominent age group was 21 to 30 years. The percentage of riders sustaining facial injuries was significantly more in the non-helmeted group. The most common injuries in open face helmets were in the middle and lower third of the face, whereas in closed face helmets it was in the middle third of the face. The numbers of injuries were significantly higher in the nonfastened helmet group as compared with fastened helmet group. Helmet fixation is an important characteristic along with helmet type for the better effectiveness and safety of the helmets for the motorcyclists.

Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to give an insight into the retrospective analysis of a number of maxillofacial trauma cases reported to our institute and research center. Materials and Methods: The data for this study was obtained from the medical records and outpatient prescription slips of cases treated at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department from 2010 to 2016. Etiology, age, gender, pattern of fracture, and surgical treatment modalities undertaken in these patients were recorded. Results: A total of 353 maxillofacial trauma patients with mean age of 40 years, treated at our institute were evaluated from 2010 to 2016. Mandible was the most commonly fractured bone with parasymphysis as the most frequent site. Majority of victims were males (male:female ratio of 4:1) and also in the third decade of life. This study showed that 73% patients were treated by open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), 25.8% by intermaxillary fixation (IMF) and Stabilization of fracture mandible with acrylic splint and circummandibular wiring was done in 0.8% pediatric patients. Conclusion: It was concluded that road traffic accidents were reported as the leading cause of maxillofacial fractures followed by assault, falls, and familial dispute. Maxillofacial surgeons as health care providers must continue their ‘face it’ campaign to decrease the incidence of road traffic accidents. Open reduction and internal fixation remains the gold standard treatment modality.

Abstract
Background The epidemiology of facial injuries varies based on lifestyle, cultural background and socioeconomic status in different countries and geographic zones. This study evaluated the epidemiology of maxillofacial fractures and treatment plans in hospitalized patients in Northeast of Iran (2015-2016). Material and Methods In this retrospective study, the medical records of 502 hospitalized patients were evaluated in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery in Kamyab Hospital in Mashhad, Iran. The type and cause of fractures and treatment plans were recorded in a checklist. Data were analyzed with Mann–Whitney test, chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test, using SPSS 21. Results The majority of patients were male (80.3%). Most subjects were in 20-30-year age range (43.2%). The fractures were mostly caused by accidents, particularly motorcycle accidents (MCAs), and the most common site of involvement was the body of the mandible. There was a significant association between the type of treatment and age. In fact, the age range of 16-59 years underwent open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) more than other age ranges (P=0.001). Also, there was a significant association between gender and fractures (P=0.002). Conclusions It was concluded that patient age and gender and trauma significantly affected the prevalence of maxillofacial traumas, fracture types and treatment plans. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Motor vehicle accidents (MVA) and falls are major causes of maxillofacial injuries posing real challenges for the medical staff. PURPOSE To describe the demographic and injury characteristics, as well as the treatment procedures of casualties diagnosed with maxillofacial injuries. METHODS The investigators implemented a multicenter retrospective study composed of hospitalized maxillofacial trauma patients recorded in the Israel Trauma Registry for 2000 to 2011. The predictor variable was mechanism of injury and the outcome variable was type of injury, severity, and hospital resources utilization. Descriptive and bivariate statistics with P values was set at 0.05. RESULTS The study included 11,592 reported hospitalized maxillofacial trauma patients (39.4% of them were MVA, 33.5% were falls), with a male predominance of a 3:1 ratio. The high-risk age groups were the first 3 decades of life in both etiologies, while age groups above 75 years were also frequent in falls. Severity of maxillofacial injuries, multiple injuries, admission to intensive care units, hospitalization for more than 15 days, inpatient mortality, and rehabilitation after discharge was significantly higher in MVA compared with falls. Conversely, maxillofacial surgeries were performed slightly more among patients injured in falls (34.1% and 31.1% respectively), as tongue and mouth are more prone targets in falls, compared with zygoma, maxilla, mandible, and teeth in MVA. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that the etiologies present an entire separate pattern of trauma. A better understanding and proper identification of their high-risk groups should lead to appropriate prevention programs and treatment protocols.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maxillofacial fractures occur in a significant proportion worldwide and can occur as an isolated injury or in combination with other severe injuries including cranial, spinal, and upper and lower body injuries requiring prompt diagnosis with possible emergency interventions. The epidemiology of facial fractures varies with regard to injury type, severity, and cause and depends on the population studied. Hence, understanding of these factors can aid in establishing clinical and research priorities for effective treatment and prevention of these injuries. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this present retrospective study, we provide a comprehensive overview regarding cranio-maxillofacial trauma on 3611 patients to assist the clinician in assessment and management of this unique highly specialized area of traumatology. A preformed pro forma was used to analyze the medical records of patients treated for facial trauma in The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital, Chennai. The distribution according to age, gender, etiology, type of injury, time interval between accident and treatment, loss of consciousness, facial bones involved, pattern of fracture lines, treatment offered, and postoperative complications were recorded and evaluated. RESULTS We inferred male patients sustained more injuries mostly in the third decade of age. Road traffic accidents were the most common cause of injury. Mandible was the most commonly fractured bone in the facial skeleton. Soft tissue injuries occurred more in road traffic accidents and upper lip was the commonest site of injury. CONCLUSION Our study provides insights into the epidemiology of facial injuries and associated factors and can be useful not only in developing prevention strategies but also for grading the existing legal regulations and also for framing a more effective treatment protocol.

Abstract
Objectives: This case report looks at a 53-year-old patient who had suffered a penetrating foreign body injury to the retro-orbital space and the surgical approach taken to remove the large glass fragments found and to correct the damage caused. Having fallen while holding a drinking glass, this patient suffered multiple laceration injuries to the maxillofacial region upon the glass shattering in contact with the face. However, unbeknownst to the patient, several glass fragments became embedded in the retro-orbital space, and this was only detected on presentation 2 days post-injury with unusual symptoms of sharp, sudden pain elicited on extreme gaze as well as ocular motility restriction. Methods: This embedded foreign body required a creative surgical approach to remove it involving gaining access to the retro-orbital space via a superior approach and cautiously following the path the glass shards took upon entry, all the way to the posterior aspect of superior rectus. Intra-operative radiographic guidance was required due to the restriction of operating within this space and particularly when removing glass fragments distal to superior rectus. Results and Conclusion: The patient recovered well and experienced an immediate improvement in ocular motility with a return to relative normality over the next few months.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The world wide pattern of oral and maxillofacial surgical conditions has rarely been reported despite its significance in ensuring quality of care. A large number of patients are managed surgically in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department of Dhaka Dental College Hospital but there has been no surgical audit to identify the potential problems in patient care. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to identify the pattern of oral and maxillofacial conditions in patients of maxillofacial surgery of Dhaka Dental College Hospital, which would provide valuable information to build up the focus of attention, to develop a future strategy plan, to improve its clinical care and extend the academic and research field. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective survey of oral and maxillofacial surgical cases managed at the inpatient Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dhaka Dental College Hospital. All admitted patients from 1st January, 2012 to 31st December, 2012 were included in this study. The patients' data were retrieved from the wards registers and patient records. The data were recorded as age, sex, occupation, geographic distribution, diagnosis, treatment done and operation name. These were studied to assess the prevalence of age, sex, diseases and the name of the treatment offered. Analysis of major groups of diagnosis on the basis of age and sex was also studied. Mortality was also recorded. RESULTS Between 1st January, 2012 and 31st December, 2012 a total of 768 patients were treated. Among them 494 patients were male while 274 were female, male female ratio was 1.80:1. The majority of the patients were from Dhaka division. The mean age of the patients was 33.20 years; peak age group was 15-30 years. The most common diagnosis was maxillofacial injuries (35 %), followed by oral squamous cell carcinoma (22 %) and odontogenic tumours and hamartomas (11 %). Maxillo-mandibular fixation or wiring was the main modality of treatment. The mortality rate was 0.26 % of total patients. CONCLUSIONS The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dhaka Dental College Hospital is a busy centre for specialized maxillofacial services in Bangladesh. A good number of patients with a wide range of oral and maxillofacial surgical conditions are managed here. Maxillofacial injury and oral cancer are the two most common conditions encountered here.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been aimed at evaluating the relationship of maxillofacial fractures in farmers, which are caused due to traumas while working in farms, with trauma etiologies, maxillofacial fracture areas, age, sex, and seasonal variables. METHODS Among the farmers who have come to our emergency service unit as a result of maxillofacial trauma between 2010 and 2012, 146 patients have been analyzed retrospectively. The patients' demographic findings, trauma etiologies, seasonal variables of trauma, and maxillofacial fracture area distribution have been analyzed. RESULTS Patients' age varies between 12 and 80 and 87 of them are female (59.59%), while 59 are male (40.41%). The subjects' etiological distribution is as follows: 47.5% is traumas caused by cattle among the farm animals; 15.75% is traumas caused by the blows of agricultural tools; 12.33% is traumas caused by tractor accidents; 9.59% is traumas caused by falling from haystacks; 7.53% is traumas caused by falling from agricultural vehicles, and 6.85% is traumas caused by horse kicks. When trauma etiology, age, sex, seasonal distribution, and the maxillofacial fractures were analyzed, statistically significant results have been determined. CONCLUSIONS Although the number of maxillofacial traumas is considerably high in farmers due to farm animals, agricultural devices, and agricultural tools, while these traumas can cause functional and aesthetically minor fractures on the face, they can cause important and serious fractures as well. While knowing the mechanism of etiological fractures and accidents in different study groups can be guiding in the speedy diagnosis and treatment of possible fractures, it can also be helpful in taking precautions against traumas in these groups as well.

Abstract
Interpersonal violence (IPV) and heavy alcohol consumption are major problems in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Cranio-maxillofacial fractures, particularly nasal and zygomatic bone fractures, as well as isolated radial fractures (Colles fractures) and ulnar shaft fractures (parry fractures), are indicative of IPV, while alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is the consequence of chronic alcohol abuse. We therefore aim to investigate whether a significant association exists between the prevalence of cranio-maxillofacial fractures and parry fractures and ALD in a Western Cape population. Embalmed cadavers (n = 124) used for medical students' anatomy training at the Division of Anatomy and Histology, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University were studied. The cadavers were dissected according to departmental protocol. The liver of each cadaver was investigated for macroscopic pathology lesions. Tissue samples were removed, processed to wax, and sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). All soft tissue was removed from the skulls, radii, and ulnae, which were then investigated for healed skeletal trauma. The results showed 37/124 (29.8%) cadavers had healed cranio-maxillofacial fractures and 24/124 (19.4%) cadavers had morphologic features of ALD. A total of 12/124 (9.7%) cadavers showed signs of both ALD and healed cranio-maxillofacial trauma. More males were affected than females, and left-sided facial fractures were statistically more common compared to the right side. This study illustrated a significant trend between alcohol abuse and cranio-maxillofacial fractures in individuals from communities with a low socio-economic status (SES) where IPV is a major problem.

Abstract
CONTEXT Evaluation of Maxillofacial fractures in hilly region of Garhwal Himalyas and its relation with age, gender, anatomical location, seasonal variation and treatment provided. AIMS The aim of the present study is to analyze the pattern of maxillofacial fractures in the Garhwal Himalayan region of India and to compare the results with similar studies in India and the rest of the world. SETTINGS AND DESIGN This was a prospective study conducted on 102 patients with 128 facial fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted on 102 patients who were admitted for the treatment of maxillofacial fractures in the Department of Dentistry at Government Medical College, Srinagar, Uttarakhand, India. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED All analyses were performed using Chi-square test and level of significance. RESULTS Peak incidence was noted in the second to fourth decades of life. Male: female ratio was 4:1. Road traffic accident was the main etiology (42.2%), followed by fall (37.2%) and assault (11.8%). Among other etiology of injury, distinguishing feature was bear bite, which was only seen in winters causing 5.9% of total injury. Fall was reported high in females whereas road traffic accident in males. Mandible was fractured in 73.5% of patients while mid-face in 26.5% of patients. Open reduction with internal fixation was the choice of treatment in 60.8% of cases. Nearly 79.4% of patients were treated under local anesthesia. The mean duration of hospitalization was (standard deviation 5.2 days) 5.3 days. CONCLUSIONS Road traffic accidents still remain the main cause of maxillofacial fractures in developing countries such as India. In hilly area, road traffic accident can be minimized by better wide roads with guide walls/parapet, strict law enforcement for overspeed, overload, and to use seat belts while driving, and use of helmet while riding two-wheeler. Open reduction internal fixation remains the first choice of treatment in facial fractures due to early return of function with minimal morbidity and better nutritional status in patients compared to closed reduction.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to analyze the biomechanical effects of sinuses in the skull on the facial impact response. Two models were built, where one had sinuses and the other had none. The models were verified using cadaver test data, including impacts to frontal bone, zygomatic bone, and maxillae. In the maxilla and zygoma impact, sinuses were found to have no significant effect on the global distribution of stress or stiffness of facial bones, and the influence was limited in local area. In forehead impact, the sinuses significantly affected the distribution of stress and strain in the skull due to its location in facial bones. The result shows that if the sinus is far away from the location of impact, its effect on the overall response of skull could be ignored. In addition, the distance between the region of interest and sinuses is another important parameter when studying the local effect of sinuses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of facial trauma among victims of road traffic accidents and investigate factors associated with it. METHODS A cross-sectional study was carried out using the medical and dental charts of 2570 victims of road traffic accidents with bodily and/or facial injuries between 2008 and 2011. Sociodemographic variables of the victims and characteristics of the accidents and injuries were evaluated. Statistical analyses included the χ(2) test as well as the Poisson univariate and multivariate regression analyses for the determination of the final hierarchical model. RESULTS The prevalence of facial injuries was 16.4%. Most of the victims were male. Among the victims with facial injuries, 44.3% had polytrauma to the face. The prevalence of facial injuries was high among accidents that occurred at night (Prevalence Ratio (PR), 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-1.84; P = .007) and victims up to 9 years of age (PR, 2.31; 95% CI, 1.03-5.17; P = .041). Moreover, the prevalence of facial injuries was lower among victims of motorcycle accidents than victims of automobile accidents (PR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.44-0.89; P = .001). CONCLUSION The prevalence of facial injuries was high in this study and was significantly associated with the place of residence, time of day, age group, and type of accident.

Abstract
Background: Facial fracture is gradually become a public health problem in our community due to the attendant morbidity and mortality. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the pattern of facial fracture in Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital. This cross-sectional study was undertaken to provide information regarding gender, age, etiology, and diagnosis of patients with maxillofacial fractures. Materials and Methods: A 1-year review of patients diagnosed and treated for facial fractures in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital between January 2011 and December 2011. The diagnosis was based on radiographic data and clinical examination. The main analysis outcome measures were etiology, age, gender, site, and treatment. Data were organized and presented by means of descriptive statistics and Pearson's Chi-square test. The level of significance adopted was 5%. Results: A total of 40 patients were treated in this period. Over 95% were male, 81% were caused by road traffic crash (RTC) and 86.4% were in the 21-30 years group. Most patients (52%) had mandibular fractures, and the most common site was the body. Most patients with midfacial fractures had fractures of the zygomaticomaxillary region (36%), while fractures of the parasymphyseal region were more common in the mandible 156 (31%). The most common treatment for jaw fractures was mandibulomaxillary fixation (MMF). Stable zygomatic complex fractures were reduced (elevated) intraorally, and unstable ones were supported by antral packs. Conclusions: This study highlights facial fractures secondary to RTC as a serious public health problem in our environment. Preventive strategies remain the cheapest way to reduce direct and indirect costs of the sequelae of RTC. It also bring to the fore the necessity to shift to open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of fractures.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to determine the pattern of midface trauma with associated concomitant injuries seen in our environment. METHODOLOGY This was a prospective analysis of trauma patients with midfacial injuries presenting at a referral center in South West Nigeria. In addition to socio-demographic data, the following information was also obtained: Mechanism of injuries, type of midfacial injuries, concomitant/associated injuries and treatment. RESULTS A total of 101 patients with midfacial injuries were involved. They were made up of 85 males and 16 females. The 20-29 year age group was mostly affected (44.6%) and the most common cause of midface injuries was road traffic accident (91.1%). The zygoma was fractured more than any other midfacial bone (46.0%). A total of 144 associated injuries were recorded among these patients, head and ocular injuries accounted for 49 (34%) and 35 (24.3%) respectively. The patients were mostly treated conservatively or by closed reduction. CONCLUSION The rate of head and ocular injuries among patients with midfacial injury was high. Knowledge of these associated injuries provides useful strategies for patient care and prevention of further complications. A multidisciplinary approach is important for optimum management of these patients.

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present the case of maxillofacial trauma patient with maxillary sinus fracture diagnosed with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and to explore the applications of this technique in evaluating the maxillofacial region. A 23-year-old male patient attempted to our clinic who had an injury at midface with complaints of swelling, numbness. The patient was examined before in emergency center but any diagnosis was made about the maxillofacial trauma. The patient re-examined clinically and radiographically. A fracture on the frontal wall of maxillary sinus is determined with the aid of CBCT. The patient consulted with the department of maxillofacial surgery and it is decided that any surgical treatment was not necessary. The emerging technique CBCT would not be the primary choice of imaging maxillofacial trauma. Nevertheless, when advantages considered this imaging procedure could be the modality of choice according to the case.

Abstract
Background: The pattern of craniofacial soft-tissue injuries occurring either in isolation or in association with fractures vary in different societies and is multiply influenced. The effects are enormous because of the prominence of the face; therefore, the purpose of this study was to document any changing pattern, severity and management of these craniofacial injuries in our center. Patients and Method: Cranio-maxillofacial region was classified into upper, middle and lower face. The cause, type, and site of the injuries were documented. Gunshot injuries were further categorized as penetrating, perforating or avulsions. Further, classification of injuries into mild, moderate, and severe was carried out based on multiple factors. Result: A total of 126 patients with soft-tissue injuries presented to our hospital out of which 85 (67.5%) were males and 41 (32.5) were females. The age range of the patients was between 10 months and 90 years with a mean ± SD of 26.4 ± 15.5 years. Road traffic accident was the most common etiology of which vehicular accidents constituted 50 (54.9%) and the motorcycle was 2 (2.2%). Assault contributed 16 (17.6%) while cases due to gun shots were 13 (14.3%). A total of 19 (15.1%) patients had associated head injuries, 11 (8.7%) patients had craniofacial fractures involving any of the bones while 3 (2.4%) patients had limb fractures and 2 (1.6%) patients had rib fractures. There were 51 (41.8%) cases classified as mild injuries, 37 (30.3%) cases as moderate injuries and 24 (19.7%) cases as severe injuries. Total of 126 cases managed, 121 (96.0%) received primary closure of the wounds while 5 (4.0%) received delayed closure under general anesthesia.

Abstract
A retrospective study was carried out wherein 10 patients with glass particle injury reporting to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery between January 2011 and March 2012 were included. Preoperative photographs and radiographs were done, and detailed surgical planning followed. Ninety percent of the patients were males with involvement of the right side of the face in 70% of the cases. The most common presenting symptom was patient sensation, which was the reason for availing delayed treatment in 70% of cases, followed by delayed or fibrotic healing (20%) and pain (10%). The diagnosis and planning were done based on computed tomographic scan (50% cases), plain radiographs (30%), needle as tactile aid (10%), and palpation (10%). Eighty percent of cases were diagnosed/presented late. The timely diagnosis of glass particle injuries requires a high degree of suspicion for the same. A systematic diagnosis and treatment planning for such injuries can minimize the morbidity and prevent such injuries from being overlooked at time of primary injury.

Abstract
AIM The present study was planned to investigate the etiology of maxillofacial injuries and to analyze the pattern of maxillofacial factures as well as the various factors influencing their distribution. STUDY DESIGN A one year cross-sectional study was done and 1,108 patients with maxillofacial fractures were analyzed consecutively from April 2010 to March 2011 who reported to the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Centre for Dental Education & Research and Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre, AIIMS, New Delhi. A performa was designed to collect the data that included age and sex distribution, etiology, influence of alcohol, type of fractures, use of restraints devices, associated injuries and treatment delivered. RESULTS Out of 1,108 patients, 89.62 % were males with a male:female ratio of 8.63:1. The 21-30 year age group was found to be maximum (39.98 %). Road traffic accidents accounted for 49.01 %, followed by assault (22.38 %) and fall from height (21.66 %). Two wheelers were the most commonly involved vehicle. Out of 437 road traffic accident patients (excluding pedestrian, n = 106), only 52.40 % were found to be using restraints devices at the time of accident. Totally 25.45 % patients were under the influence of alcohol at the time of injury. According to anatomical distribution of fractures, mandibular fractures (33.57 %) were most prevalent, followed by maxilla (31.13 %), nasal (28.33 %) and zygoma (24.36 %). Head injuries (18.32 %) were found to be the most common associated injuries followed by lower limb fractures. CONCLUSION The motive behind executing this article is to analyze the various trends of facial fractures and all those factors that affect their distribution. A perfect understanding of pattern of maxillofacial fracture will assist the executors of health care in the treatment planning and management of facial injuries. Knowledge gained from the present study would influence in assessing the effectiveness of existing preventive measures and elaboration of future preventive measures and conducting new research.

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and etiology of maxillofacial fractures and also to evaluate different treatment modalities. Study design: The sample consisted of 1,038 patients, with maxillofacial injuries treated at our center from June 2006 to June 2011. Cause, type, site of injury, gender, age and treatment given to them, all these parameter are evaluated. Conclusion: The results of this study exhibit that road traffic accidents is the main reason for maxilla facial injuries followed by fall from height. Maxillofacial injuries are more frequent in male than in female. The mandible was most frequently involved facial bone. The miniplate osteosynthesis was the most widespread of the fixation technique but conservative management of the fractured bone also has a significance importance in treatment modalities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maxillofacial-oral injuries is a serious health problem in China. The main aetiologic factors and types of maxillofacial-oral injuries differ according to different geographical areas and socio-economic statuses of populations in different countries or within the same country. AIM The aim of this study was to analyze the types and external causes of maxillofacial-oral injuries among hospitalized patients in Xi'an, China, and thereafter to determine the status of maxillofacial-oral injuries in this region and to provide clinical clues for a future prevention of these injuries. MATERIAL AND METHODS Totally, 627 patients aged 3-64 years with maxillofacial-oral injuries, who were hospitalized in two public stomatological hospitals in Xi'an from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2008, were included in this study. The types and external causes of injuries were analyzed in terms of age, gender and urban and rural location. RESULTS The results showed that jaw fractures (n = 406, 64.8%) and contusion/laceration injuries (n = 161, 25.7%) were the most frequent injuries. Injuries were 4.6 times more common in males than in females. Most maxillofacial-oral injuries occurred in those aged 18-59 years (71.1%), with a peak incidence in the 15- to 39-year-old group (31.4%). The proportion of patients from urban areas (45.5%) was lower than that from rural areas (54.4%). Regardless of gender, age and location, vehicle traffic accidents was the most common cause (n = 263, 41.9%), followed by falls (n = 109, 17.2%) and fighting-induced injuries (n = 87, 13.9%). CONCLUSIONS Preventive strategies for maxillofacial-oral injuries due to traffic accidents should be emphasized and promoted in the first hand, especially for males, rural residents and those aged between 18 and 59 years.

Abstract
THE AIM The aim of this study was to analyze maxillofacial region fractures during the past 20 years in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery in Prishtina. METHODS We have analyzed the histories of all patients with trauma who were hospitalized in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery in Prishtina since the opening of the clinic in 1983 through 2005. Narrowing the subject of our research, we concentrated on fractures of the maxillofacial region treated at the Clinic of Maxillofacial Surgery for the period 2001-2005. We have analyzed those fractures and compared them with the period from 1983 to 2005 only when it was reasonable. RESULTS During this period, 1,945 patients were treated for trauma in the maxillofacial region by the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. This group included 19.8% females and 80.2% males. The largest age group were those between 20 and 20 years of age. Causes of trauma for both periods were predominantly traffic accidents; however, during the period 2001-2005, interpersonal conflicts were increasingly the cause of fractures. CONCLUSION Interpersonal conflict as a cause of maxillofacial trauma has risen in recent years. With this increase the methods of treating fractures in this region are also changing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, orofacial sequelae are recognized as very influential on the quality-of-life for a victim of orofacial damage. Therefore, correct forensic assessment for indenisation purposes is mandatory. However, orofacial damage is frequently reduced to organic components, which results in a forensic assessment process, which are inadequate. This study aims to improve the orofacial damage assessment through the development of an auxiliary tool, the orohanditest. MATERIALS AND METHODS A preliminary inventory was constructed, using relevant bibliographic elements and retrospective study of forensic examinations reports concerning orofacial trauma. This inventory was then utilized in the assessment of 265 orofacial trauma victims for validation. Validity was studied by analyzing the internal construct validity (exploring factorial validity and assessing internal consistency) and the external construct validity (assessing convergent validity and discriminant validity). The level of significance was defined as P < 0.05. RESULTS The final inventory (orohanditest) was comprised of the three components of body (8 items), functions (10 items) and situations (24 items), which were found to be statistically reliable and valid for assessment. The final score (orofacial damage coefficient) reflects the orofacial damage severity. CONCLUSION Orohanditest provides a reliable, precise, and complete orofacial damage description and quantification. Therefore, this method can be useful as an auxiliary tool in the orofacial damage assessment process.

Abstract
Background The etiology, demographics, fracture site in facial injury patients have been reported worldwide. However, few studies have attempted to identify changes in maxillofacial fractures over time periods and between countries. The statistics are vastly different due to variations in social, environmental, and cultural factors. Methods Data were collected from departmental records between 1996 and 2006 for patients treated at Christchurch Hospital for facial fractures. Variables examined included incidence, demographics, site of fracture, and treatment methods. Results A total of 2563 patients presented during the study period, 1158 patients in the first half and 1404 patients in the second half. Male-to-female ratio was 4:1 in both periods and males in 16- to 30-year group accounted for about half of all patients. Interpersonal violence was the most common cause of injuries, and there was a decrease in injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents. Approximately half of all patients required hospitalization and surgery, and the most common method of treatment was open reduction and internal fixation. Conclusion Maxillofacial fracture is a common injury in young males following interpersonal violence in New Zealand. Studies in other countries and over different time periods yield interesting differences in the etiology, demographics, and fractures patterns. These are due to environmental, societal, cultural, and legislative differences.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of injuries to the head and face in adolescent and teenager victims of non-natural deaths. A retrospective study was undertaken by the analysis of medical forensic reports obtained from medical forensic examinations performed at the Department of Forensic Medicine of the city of Campina Grande, PB, Brazil, between January 2003 and December 2007. From a total of 607 reports issued during this time span, the study sample consisted of 423 reports (69.6%) referring to adolescents and teenagers of both genders, aged 12 to 18 years, who were confirmed to have died from external causes. The causes of death were encoded according to the Chapter XX of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10). The majority of victims were 17 year old males (25.8%). Firearms (33.3%) and transport accidents (32.2%) were the most common causes of death, with boys showing a 3.7 times greater likelihood of getting killed by firearms than girls. There was statistically significant relationship between the occurrence of transport accidents and gender. The majority of victims (71.6%) presented with multiple injuries throughout the body. There was statistically significant relationship between the occurrence of transport accidents and the presence of multiple injuries. A high percentage of the victims presented with injuries to the head and face. There was statistically significant relationship between the occurrence of transport accidents and the presence of injury to the head. Fatal gunshot wounds and transport accidents were the main causes of death of male adolescents and teenagers. The victims presented with multiple injuries, especially to the head and face, and the mandible was the most frequently injured facial bone. .

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was designed to analyze the etiology and patterns of soft-tissue facial lacerations associated with maxillofacial fractures and to identify associations between facial lacerations and underlying fractures. METHODS Of 1960 patients who had been admitted for maxillofacial fractures between 2001 and 2010, only patients with complete clinical records presenting with facial lacerations were considered for this study. Facial lacerations were classified according to the MCFONTZL system. RESULTS Of the 1960 patients admitted with maxillofacial fractures, 637 had 836 associated facial lacerations. Motor vehicle accidents and falls were responsible for most injuries to patients with facial lacerations. According to etiology, fractures resulting from work-related accidents more frequently produced associated lacerations.For all causes of injury, more facial lacerations were observed over the "T" area formed by the upper orbit and forehead, nose, upper and lower lips, and chin. Lacerations and maxillofacial fractures were more frequently localized to the middle third of the face, followed by the inferior third.There was a strong association between lacerations and fractures in the chin region, considering both symphyseal and parasymphyseal fractures (direct trauma) and condylar fractures (indirect trauma). CONCLUSIONS An association between facial lacerations and underlying maxillofacial fractures was observed, particularly in the inferior orbital area and over the zygoma, mandible, and chin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maxillofacial fractures can lead to substantial long-term functional, esthetic and psychological complications. AIM The aim of this study is to evaluate these injuries in a Turkish Iranian population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study of 170 patients with 210 maxillofacial fractures admitted to the emergency department of a central referral emergency hospital in the area over a 5 year period is presented. Patients' data included demographic information, etiology, site and associated injuries and complications. RESULTS Road traffic accident was the commonest cause (40%) and the age group of 21-30 comprised the biggest group (30%). Mandibular fractures outnumbered midface fractures (150 vs. 60). Ramus (21.5%) and zygoma (26.5%) were the commonest fracture regions respectively in mandible and midface. Male: female ratio was 3.8:1 Almost half of patients (46%) had sustained associated injuries most of which was soft tissue laceration of the face (17.5%). 22 patient (13%) had associated complication and the hemorrhage was the commonest form of that (9%). CONCLUSION It seems that road traffic accidents continue to be the leading cause of maxillofacial fractures and there is an urgent need to implement enhanced regulations and monitoring on motor vehicular traffic.

Abstract
The aim was to report the distribution, frequency and aetiology of jaw fractures in patients treated at the University Hospital, Malmö, 1993-2003 and to compare two previous studies from 1952-1962 and 1975-1985. In 1993-2003, 461 patients, 137 women (mean age 42 years; range 15-82) and 324 men (mean age 28 years; range 17-59) were diagnosed and treated. Women were significantly older than men (P<0.001). The most frequent cause of jaw fractures was falls in women (45%). In men, interpersonal violence (46%) was most common followed by road traffic accidents (RTAs) (24%) mostly involving bicycles (14%). The frequency of falls in women and men was significantly different (P<0.001) as was the difference between violence in men and women (P<0.001). The proportion of fractures caused by RTAs was significantly higher in 1952-1962 than in 1993-2003 (P<0.001). There was a significant increase in the proportion of fractures caused by violence between the two studies (P=0.007). In 1993-2003 the proportion of fractures in women due to falls was significantly higher than in 1952-1962 (P=0.006). Violence has replaced RTAs as the main cause for jaw fractures in men; for women falling is the commonest cause.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Two wheeler users in India are the most vulnerable for road fatalities and two wheelers constitute the major portion of vehicular traffic. OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence of maxillofacial injuries among the victims of motorized two wheeler road traffic accidents in Bangalore city. MATERIALS AND METHODS Medical records of cases reported during January 2006-June 2007 to hospitals were considered and data regarding age, sex, date of trauma, rider or pillion rider, alcohol consumption, site of injury on the face and associated injuries to other parts of the body were recorded. RESULTS The prevalence of injuries among males and females was in the ratio of 3:1. Most of them were in the age group of 21-30 years. Most of the cases were recorded on Saturdays (17.4%) and in the months of August (9%) and September (9.7%) and the least number of cases were reported in January, March and June (2.1%) of 2007. The decrease in number of cases coincides with the implementation of the Helmet Rule in the city. CONCLUSION There is a need to stress on the importance of usage of helmets and adherence to traffic rules during the high-risk periods to reduce the incidence of road traffic accidents and accompanying maxillofacial injuries.

Abstract
Background Facial trauma or tumor surgery in the head and face area often lead to massive destruction of the facial skeleton. Cell-based bone reconstruction therapies promise to offer new therapeutic opportunities for the repair of bone damaged by disease or injury. Currently, embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are discussed to be a potential cell source for bone tissue engineering. The purpose of this study was to investigate various supplements in culture media with respect to the induction of osteogenic differentiation. Methods Murine ESCs were cultured in the presence of LIF (leukemia inhibitory factor), DAG (dexamethasone, ascorbic acid and β-glycerophosphate) or bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2). Microscopical analyses were performed using von Kossa staining, and expression of osteogenic marker genes was determined by real time PCR. Results ESCs cultured with DAG showed by far the largest deposition of calcium phosphate-containing minerals. Starting at day 9 of culture, a strong increase in collagen I mRNA expression was detected in the DAG-treated cells. In BMP-2-treated ESCs the collagen I mRNA induction was less increased. Expression of osteocalcin, a highly specific marker for osteogentic differentiation, showed a double-peaked curve in DAG-treated cells. ESCs cultured in the presence of DAG showed a strong increase in osteocalcin mRNA at day 9 followed by a second peak starting at day 17. Conclusion Supplementation of ESC cell cultures with DAG is effective in inducing osteogenic differentiation and appears to be more potent than stimulation with BMP-2 alone. Thus, DAG treatment can be recommended for generating ESC populations with osteogenic differentiation that are intended for use in bone tissue engineering.
