Given that the global production of chlorophyll reaches billions of tons annually, a comprehensive understanding of its biosynthetic pathways and regulatory mechanisms is important. The metabolic pathways governing chlorophyll biosynthesis and catabolism are complex, encompassing a series of interconnected reactions mediated by a spectrum of enzymes. Environmental fluctuations, particularly abiotic stressors such as drought, extreme temperature variations, and excessive light exposure, can significantly perturb these processes. Such disruptions in chlorophyll metabolism have profound implications for plant growth and development. This review delves into the core aspects of chlorophyll metabolism, encompassing both biosynthetic and degradative pathways. It elucidates key genes and enzymes instrumental in these processes and underscores the impact of abiotic stress on chlorophyll metabolism. Furthermore, the review aims to deepen the understanding of the interplay between chlorophyll metabolic dynamics and stress responses, thereby shedding light on potential regulatory mechanisms.

The synergistic potential of biochar and nanoparticles in phytoremediation and enhancing cadmium tolerance in plants

Cadmium (Cd) is classified as a heavy metal (HM) and is found into the environment through both natural processes and intensified anthropogenic activities such as industrial operations, mining, disposal of metal-laden waste like batteries, as well as sludge disposal, excessive fertilizer application, and Cd-related product usage. This rising Cd disposal into the environment carries substantial risks to the food chain and human well-being. Inadequate regulatory measures have led to Cd bio-accumulation in plants, which is increasing in an alarming rate and further jeopardizing higher trophic organisms, including humans. In response, an effective Cd decontamination strategy such as phytoremediation emerges as a potent solution, with innovations in nanotechnology like biochar (BC) and nanoparticles (NPs) further augmenting its effectiveness for Cd phytoremediation. BC, derived from biomass pyrolysis, and a variety of NPs, both natural and less toxic, actively engage in Cd removal during phytoremediation, mitigating plant toxicity and associated hazards. This review scrutinizes the application of BC and NPs in Cd phytoremediation, assessing their synergistic mechanism in influencing plant growth, genetic regulations, structural transformations, and phytohormone dynamics. Additionally, the review also underscores the adoption of this sustainable and environmentally friendly strategies for future research in employing BC-NP microaggregates to ameliorate Cd phytoremediation from soil, thereby curbing ecological damage due to Cd toxicity.

Next generation chemical priming: with a little help from our nanocarrier friends

Plants are exposed to multiple threats linked to climate change which can cause critical yield losses. Therefore, designing novel crop management tools is crucial. Chemical priming has recently emerged as an effective technology for improving tolerance to stress factors. Several compounds such as phytohormones, reactive species, and synthetic chimeras have been identified as promising priming agents. Following remarkable developments in nanotechnology, several unique nanocarriers (NCs) have been engineered that can act as smart delivery systems. These provide an eco-friendly, next-generation method for chemical priming, leading to increased efficiency and reduced overall chemical usage. We review novel engineered NCs (NENCs) as vehicles for chemical agents in advanced priming strategies, and address challenges and opportunities to be met towards achieving sustainable agriculture.
