Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with chronic diseases are at higher risk of sarcopenia, and precise prediction is essential for its prevention. This study aims to develop a risk scoring model using longitudinal data to predict the probability of sarcopenia in this population over next 3-5 years, thereby enabling early warning and intervention. METHODS Using data from a nationwide survey initiated in 2011, we selected patient data records from wave 1 (2011-2012) and follow-up data from wave 3 (2015-2016) as the study cohort. Retrospective data collection included demographic information, health conditions, and biochemical markers. After excluding records with missing values, a total of 2891 adults with chronic conditions were enrolled. Sarcopenia was assessed based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 guidelines. A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with random effects and diverse machine learning models were utilized to explore feature contributions to sarcopenia risk. The Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) algorithm was employed to optimize the full Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model and develop an online application tool. RESULTS Among total population, 580 (20.1%) individuals were diagnosed with sarcopenia in wave 1 (2011-2012), and 638 (22.1%) were diagnosed in wave 3 (2015-2016), while 2165 (74.9%) individuals were not diagnosed with sarcopenia across the study period. MLP model, performed better than other three classic machine learning models, demonstrated a ROC AUC of 0.912, a PR AUC of 0.401, a sensitivity of 0.875, a specificity of 0.844, a Kappa value of 0.376, and an F1 score of 0.44. According to MLP model-based SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) scoring, weight, age, BMI, height, total cholesterol, PEF, and gender were identified as the most important features of chronic disease individuals for sarcopenia. Using the RFE algorithm, we selected six key variables-weight, age, BMI, height, total cholesterol, and gender-achieving an ROC AUC of about 0.9 for the online application tool. CONCLUSION We developed an MLP machine learning model that incorporates only six easily accessible variables, enabling the prediction of sarcopenia risk in individuals with chronic diseases. Additionally, we created a practical online application tool to assist in decision-making and streamline clinical assessments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the association of serum uric acid levels with handgrip strength (HGS) and dynapenia in postmenopausal women. METHODS A cross-sectional study among 422 participants collected data on age, age at menopause, adiposity, alcohol consumption, body mass index, current smoking status, HGS (measured using a digital dynamometer) and physical activity. Serum levels of creatinine, glucose, glycated hemoglobin, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, thyroid-stimulating hormone and uric acid were evaluated. Women were categorized into quartiles. A directed acyclic graph was designed to identify confounding variables. Multivariable regression analysis was used to assess associations between uric acid with HGS or dynapenia. RESULTS Women with hyperuricemia presented significant association with lower HGS (p = 0.00028). After adjusting for potential confounders, the multivariable linear regression to analyze the association between uric acid and HGS showed an inverted U-shaped curve, with quartile 1 (β = -0.54; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.50, 0.40), quartile 3 (β = -0.21; 95% CI: -1.20, 0.74) and quartile 4 (β = -1.3; 95% CI: -2.3, -0.37) compared with quartile 2. Serum uric acid levels were significantly associated with HGS (p = 0.036). CONCLUSIONS The association between uric acid quartiles with HGS or dynapenia displayed an inverted U-shaped curve. These findings suggest that specific serum uric acid levels within the normal range are associated with better HGS.

Abstract
Serum urate (SU) levels are significantly elevated in conditions such as gout, type 2 diabetes (T2D), obesity, and other metabolic syndromes. Recently, due to the high prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA), numerous clinical connections between SU and musculoskeletal disorders like sarcopenia, osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD), and osteoporosis (OP) have been identified. This review discusses the mechanisms linking SU to musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the clinical associations of SU with conditions such as sarcopenia, T2D with sarcopenia, McArdle disease, heart failure, gout, OA, IDD, OP and exercise-induced acute kidney injury (EIAKI), offering valuable insights for improved prevention and treatment strategies. Mechanisms linking SU to musculoskeletal disorders include oxidative stress, MSU (monosodium urate) crystal deposition, inflammation, and other factors. In adults, both age and SU levels should be considered for preventing sarcopenia, while gender and SU may directly impact muscle mass in children and adolescents. HUA and gout may be risk factors for OA progression, although some reports suggest otherwise. A U-shaped relationship between SU and IDD has been reported, particularly in Chinese men, indicating lower or higher SU level may be risk factors for IDD. Maintaining SU levels within a certain range may help prevent OP and fractures. Future research, including epidemiological studies and new pathogenesis findings, will further clarify the relationship between musculoskeletal diseases and SU.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Patients and Methods This cross-sectional study included 597 adult inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and ultrasonography-confirmed fatty liver disease. Participants were stratified into tertiles based on femoral neck BMD. Gender-stratified linear regression analyses were performed to assess the relationship between SUA and femoral neck BMD. Nonlinear associations were explored using generalized additive models and two-piece linear regression. Results No significant linear association was observed between SUA and femoral neck BMD in either gender (all P > 0.05). However, after adjusting for confounders, a nonlinear relationship was identified in male patients, with a threshold at 388 μmol/L. The effect sizes for SUA levels below and above this threshold were 0.001 (95% CI: 0.000 to 0.002, P = 0.008) and -0.000 (95% CI: -0.002 to 0.000, P = 0.117), respectively. No nonlinear relationship was observed in female patients. Conclusion In male MAFLD patients, SUA levels exhibit a nonlinear relationship with femoral neck BMD, with a positive association observed between 300 μmol/L and 388 μmol/L. This relationship was not observed in female patients, suggesting gender-specific effects of SUA on bone health in MAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Recent research suggests that uric acid, as a metabolite with antioxidant properties, may affect muscle function and health. However, the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and low muscle mass remains relatively obscure. This study focuses on the association between SUA and low muscle mass in a middle-aged and elderly population in the United States. METHODS Utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a total of 12,106 patients aged ≥45 years, possessing complete analytical data, were incorporated. Low muscle mass in our study is defined as indices below 0.789 for males and 0.512 for females, according to the FNIH Biomarkers Consortium. Gender stratified analyses were conducted employing a multivariate weighted logistic regression model. When examining serum uric acid (SUA) levels, the SUA dataset was stratified into deciles, and odds ratios (ORs) were calculated across distinct subgroups of males and females. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) method was employed to investigate the potential nonlinear association between SUA levels and low muscle mass. A series of subgroup analyses stratified by demographic variables and clinical experience were conducted. RESULTS A total of 2,185 participants (18.05%) were identified with low muscle mass, comprising 1,121 males and 1,064 females. Females with low muscle mass had higher SUA levels and an increased incidence of hyperuricemia compared to those without low muscle mass. In females, a fully adjusted multivariable weighted regression model revealed a positive association between hyperuricemia and low muscle mass (OR, 1.43; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.92; P = 0.021). No significant association was observed in males. Additionally, RCS curves indicated a J-shaped relationship between increasing SUA levels and the risk of low muscle mass in females, and an inverse J-shaped relationship in males. CONCLUSIONS This study reveals a significant positive correlation between hyperuricemia and the risk of low muscle mass in middle-aged and older women in the United States, whereas the relationship between SUA levels and low muscle mass did not attain statistical significance. In the male cohort, neither SUA levels nor hyperuricemia demonstrated a significant association with low muscle mass.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) presents a serious risk to human health. The increased prevalence of sarcopenia in the HFpEF population has a negative impact on patient prognosis. Uric acid (UA) is the byproduct of purine metabolism and is harmful to the cardiovascular system. This study aims to establish the potential relationship between sarcopenia and serum UA in HFpEF patients. METHODS Data were obtained from 180 individuals (aged ≥60 years) with HFpEF admitted to the Geriatric Department of Jiangsu Province Hospital between January 2021 and December 2022. The UA values were grouped into 4 quartiles (Q1-Q4). Logistic generalized linear models and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression were used to analyze the relationship between sarcopenia and UA. Subgroups based on gender were utilised for further analysis. RESULTS After adjusting for covariates, odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for sarcopenia prevalence in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quartiles were 2.56 (0.57-12.65), 4.94 (1.10-24.49), and 6.95 (1.30-44.25), respectively, unlike the 1st quartile (P for trend = 0.022). The RCS plot demonstrated a positive linear relationship between serum UA levels and sarcopenia (P for non-linearity = 0.190). A sex-based subgroup analysis revealed a statistically significant relationship between UA and sarcopenia in males (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In summary, the prevalence of sarcopenia is positively related to serum UA levels among the elderly diagnosed with HFpEF. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the study design, additional investigations are necessary to validate our findings and identify the optimal range for UA reduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, we investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and fatty liver in middle-aged and elderly patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to provide a theoretical foundation for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. METHODS A total of 282 patients diagnosed with T2DM aged 50 and older and were admitted to the Endocrinology Department of Xin Medical University First Affiliated Hospital between December 2021 and February 2023, were selected. Body mass index (BMI), and limb and trunk muscle mass of the patients were measured, and data were collected. Patients were grouped based on the sarcopenia diagnostic criteria. All study participants underwent the same physical examinations and laboratory tests. The relationship between the onset of sarcopenia and fatty liver in middle-aged and elderly patients diagnosed with T2DM was then investigated using statistical analysis. RESULTS Comparing the sarcopenia group to the non-sarcopenia group revealed statistically significant variations in gender, BMI, fatty liver prevalence rate, uric acid (UA), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), blood glucose, blood lipid associated indicators, and limb skeletal muscle content. There were, however, no statistically significant differences in age, disease duration, hypertension, smoking, or alcohol intake. There was a positive correlation between BMI, UA, fasting c-peptide, and Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Index (ASMI). Higher levels of BMI, ASMI, and UA were identified as protective variables against sarcopenia by multifactorial logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION Higher levels of BMI, ASMI, and UA can greatly reduce skeletal muscle atrophy in patients with T2DM. Patients with a fatty liver may be less vulnerable to sarcopenia. There is little evidence, however, that a fatty liver works as a preventive factor against sarcopenia.

Abstract
AIM To explore the effects and mechanisms of different concentrations of uric acid on skeletal muscle cells. METHODS C2C12 myoblasts were differentiated into myotubes and then exposed to a medium containing uric acid (0 μM, 200 μM, 400 μM, 600 μM, 800 μM, 1000 μM, 1200 μM, 1400 μM). The myotube diameters were observed under light microscopy; the expressions of myosin heavy chain (MyHC), autophagy-related proteins (LC3BII/LC3BI, P62), cGAS, and p-Sting/Sting proteins were analyzed using Western blotting or immunoprecipitation; and oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage were evaluated using ROS, mtDNA and JC-1 assays. Cell viability was measured via CCK8 assay, and 1000-μM uric acid was selected for follow-up experiments. Furthermore, C2C12 myotubes were divided into a blank control group (Ctrl), a high-uric-acid group (HUA), and an HUA plus cGASn inhibitor group (HUA + RU.521). Then, the myotube diameter was observed, oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage were evaluated, and MyHC and autophagy-related protein expressions were analysed. RESULTS C2C12 myotubes cultured in 400-μM uric acid medium had the greatest myotube diameter and the highest MyHC protein expression. At 1000-μM uric acid, the diameter and MyHC protein expression were significantly decreased, LCB3II/LCB3I expression was notably increased, and the level of p62 protein expression was considerably decreased. RU.521 partially alleviated the HUA-induced C2C12 myotubes changes. CONCLUSIONS Uric acid bidirectionally affected C2C12 myotubes: 400-μΜ uric acid promoted myotube growth, while 1000-μΜ uric acid triggered myotube atrophy with increased autophagy. Inhibiting cGAS-Sting signaling attenuated HUA-induced C2C12 myotube autophagy and atrophy. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 430-439.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies on the association between serum uric acid (UA) levels and sarcopenia have yielded contradictory results. This meta-analysis and literature review assessed the association between serum UA levels and sarcopenia. Moreover, we conducted a comparative analysis of the differences in serum UA concentrations between individuals with and without sarcopenia. METHODS A systematic search was conducted across various medical databases, namely PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, CNKI, and Wanfang (from the start to August 20, 2023). This search focused on published studies that investigated the relationship between serum UA levels and sarcopenia. The relationship between serum UA concentration and the occurrence of sarcopenia was analyzed, and the differences in serum UA concentrations between individuals with sarcopenia and control groups were reviewed. Statistical analysis was performed using STATA 11.0 and R 4.1.3. RESULTS Sixteen studies were considered for our analysis. The results indicated a significant association between low serum UA concentration and a higher sarcopenia risk, particularly among male patients (adjusted odds ratio = 0.65, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.49, 0.87, P = .004, I2 = 0%). Individuals with sarcopenia exhibited decreased serum UA concentrations compared with those of the control group (mmol/L: weighted mean difference = -28.25, 95% CI = -40.45, -16.05, P < .001; mg/dL: weighted mean difference = -0.82, 95% CI = -1.05, -0.58, P < .001). Additionally, serum UA concentration was positively correlated with skeletal muscle mass index and handgrip strength (skeletal muscle index: correlation coefficient = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.11, 0.22, P < .001; handgrip strength: common odds ratios = 0.10, 95% CI = 0.06, 0.14, P < .001). CONCLUSION Individuals with sarcopenia have relatively low serum UA concentrations. A notable correlation between serum UA concentration and sarcopenia was observed. Hence, monitoring UA levels could aid in the early detection and treatment of sarcopenia, enabling timely intervention to preserve muscle mass and strength.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease, which is usually associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity. However, the incidence of MALFD in non-obese individuals without T2DM is increasing, and the pathogenesis is unclear. Serum uric acid to creatinine ratio (sUA/Cr) can reflect overall metabolic status. This study aims to observe the association between sUA/Cr and MAFLD in non-obese individuals without T2DM. METHODS A total of 21,996 individuals were included in this study. The subjects were divided into four subgroups: non-obese patients without T2DM, obese patients without T2DM, non-obese patients with T2DM, and obese patients with T2DM. Logistic regression analyzed the correlation between sUA/Cr and MAFLD subgroups. Receiver operating characteristics analyzed the predictive value of sUA/Cr for MAFLD subgroups. The stratified analyses by sex and age were performed. RESULTS Non-obese MAFLD individuals without T2DM had higher sUA/Cr levels than their counterparts. sUA/Cr was significantly correlated positively with MAFLD in non-obese patients. Similar results were observed in both males and females and in populations at all age stages (all p<0.01). sUA/Cr was capable of discriminating MAFLD in non-obese individuals without T2DM (AUC: 0.667), especially for patients over 60 years old (AUC: 0.704). CONCLUSION The sUA/Cr ratio was correlated with MAFLD in non-obese patients without T2DM. The predictive value of sUA/Cr for MAFLD was observed. Hence, the sUA/Cr ratio might be given more concern for the risk of MAFLD in non-obese individuals without T2DM.

Abstract
Background The results of previous studies on the association between serum uric acid levels and bone mineral density and the risk of osteoporosis are controversial. Fat free mass (FFM) is more strongly associated with bone mineral density (BMD) than it is with body fat mass (BFM). Skeletal muscle mass is assumed to contribute indirectly to the relationship between serum uric acid levels and BMD. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the association between serum uric acid levels and BMD and abnormal BMD (at least osteopenia) by considering body composition in men aged ≥ 50 years. Methods This was a retrospective observational cross-sectional study. We used data obtained from 2,991 men aged ≥50 years who completed questionnaires, anthropometric surveys, laboratory tests, and bone mineral density scans. A subgroup analysis of 1,135 men who additionally underwent body composition data analysis using Inbody® was performed. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to explore the relationship between serum uric acid levels and BMD at three sites (L1-L4, Femur neck, Femur total). In addition, multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association of serum uric acid levels with abnormal BMD (at least osteopenia). Results Positive correlations between serum uric acid levels and BMD at the three sites (L1-L4, Femur neck, Femur total) were observed in unadjusted and fully adjusted models except the BMD of the femoral neck (P-value=0.054).Furthermore, FFM and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) showed positive association with serum uric acid level and BMD at three sites, with statistical significance. An increase in serum uric acid level was associated with a lower risk of abnormal BMD after adjusting for confounders including FFM and SMI. Conclusion Serum uric acid level was positively associated with BMD at three sites and had a protective effect against abnormal BMD after adjusting for multiple confounders, including FFM and SMI, in men aged ≥ 50 years.

Abstract
Introduction: There is growing evidence of research indicating that the gut microbiota is involved in the development of sarcopenia. Nevertheless, there exists a notable deficiency in comprehension concerning the connection between irregularities in the intestinal microbiome and metabolic processes in older individuals suffering from sarcopenia. Methods: To analyze fecal samples obtained from a cohort of 30 older patients diagnosed with sarcopenia as well as 30 older patients without sarcopenia, this study employed 16S rDNA sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS)-based non-targeted metabolomics profiling techniques. Results: As a result, we found that 29 genera and 172 metabolites were significantly altered in the sarcopenic patients. Among them, Blautia, Lachnospiraceae_unclassified, and Subdoligranulum were the bacteria with a potential diagnostic value for sarcopenia diagnosis. Correlation analysis between clinical indices and these gut bacteria suggested that the IL-6 level was negatively correlated with Blautia. Function prediction analysis demonstrated that 17 Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways differ significantly between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic patients. The primary classes of metabolites identified in the study included lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, and organoheterocyclic compounds. KEGG enrichment analysis showed that purine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, butanoate metabolism, and histidine metabolism may contribute to the development of sarcopenia. The correlation study on gut microbiota and metabolites found that Lachnospiraceae_unclassified was positively associated with seven metabolites that were more abundant in the non-sarcopenia group and negatively correlated with three metabolites that were more abundant in the sarcopenia group. In addition, Subdoligranulum was positively correlated with seven metabolites that were lacking in sarcopenia and negatively correlated with two metabolites that were enriching in sarcopenia. Moreover, Blautia was positively associated with xanthosine. Discussion: We conducted a study on the intestinal microbiota and metabolic profile of elderly individuals with sarcopenia, offering a comprehensive analysis of the overall ecosystem. Through this investigation, we were able to validate existing research on the gut-muscle axis and further investigate potential pathogenic processes and treatment options for sarcopenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the interaction between serum uric acid (SUA) levels with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) to low muscle strength (LMS) among older people in China. METHODS Cohort data were obtained from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2015. A total of 2,822 community-dwelling adults aged 60 and above were enrolled for the follow-up. Serum uric acid was collected after 8 h of fasting, and handgrip strength was measured with a dynamometer. eGFR was calculated with an equation based on the Chinese population. A generalized additive model was employed for interaction analysis and progressively adjusted confounders. RESULTS During the follow-up, a total of 659 individuals were excluded due to the lack of grip strength data, leaving 2,163 participants for analysis. Despite the protective effect of high uric acid against low muscle strength, especially in older females, it is not statistically significant (OR = 0.69, 95%CI = 0.45-1.04, P = 0.075). Following the progressive adjustment of covariates, the association between higher eGFR and elevated SUA levels remained statistically significant in females, showing a reduced odds ratio with low muscle strength (OR = 0.82, 95%CI = 0.70-0.97, P = 0.021). However, this trend was not observed in male participants. CONCLUSIONS This Chinese population-based cohort study suggests that among older females, a higher serum uric acid level combined with a higher estimated glomerular filtration rate is linked to a reduced risk of low muscle strength. This implies that the relationship between high serum uric acid levels and the risk of low grip strength might differ by gender.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia has emerged as a significant public health concern. Uric acid (UA), as a metabolite with excellent antioxidant capacity, has been found to be associated with sarcopenia. However, the casual effects of UA on incident sarcopenia still remain unclear. Our study aimed to explore the longitudinal association between UA and incident sarcopenia among middle-aged and older adults. METHOD A total of 5086 participants aged ≥45 years old without sarcopenia at baseline were included from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Due to the sex differences, the UA levels were analyzed by categorizing into sex-specific quartiles or by using UA levels as a continuous variable (per 1 mg/dL). The longitudinal association between UA and incident sarcopenia was evaluated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS During the 4-year follow-up period, 552 (10.85%) participants with incident sarcopenia were identified, of which 370 cases were males and 182 cases were females. Compared to the first quartile (Q1) UA levels, the Q3 and Q4 UA levels were significantly associated with lower risk of incident sarcopenia in males (Q3: adjusted hazard ratio (HR), 0.72; 95% CI (confidence interval), 0.54-0.97; Q4: HR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.41-0.80). When UA was as a continuous variable (per 1 mg/dL), the association in males remained significant (HR: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.79-0.97). No significant association was observed in females. CONCLUSION Our findings indicated that UA was negatively associated with incident sarcopenia in males but not in females among middle-aged and older Chinese.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia and sarcopenia are both strongly linked to an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and this study was designed to look into the interactive effects of hyperuricemia on ASCVD risk. METHODS This study collected information from patients (N = 2647) who underwent health check-ups at the Health Care Building of Wuhan Union Hospital between January 2019 and December 2020. Skeletal muscle mass was measured using bioelectrical impedance methods. The Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia diagnostic criteria were used to classify patients with sarcopenia. ASCVD risk was calculated using the Framingham Heart Study, and ASCVD risk ≥ 20% was considered high risk ASCVD. IBM SPSS 25.0 and GraphPad prism 8.0 software were used for data analysis and graphing. RESULTS The prevalence of hyperuricemia and sarcopenia was 23.57% and 15.34%, respectively. The occurrence of cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and low HDL-Cemia was significantly higher in subjects with hyperuricemia combined with sarcopenia (OR = 1.734, 3.064, 1.61, 8.77 and 1.691 respectively, p < 0.05); Hyperuricemia and high-risk ASCVD were independently associated (OR = 1.355, 95% CI = 1.000-1.838, p = 0.04). Although there was no significant association between sarcopenia and high-risk ASCVD after controlling for confounders (OR = 1.274, 95% CI = 0.828-1.959, p = 0.271), sarcopenia combined with hyperuricemia significantly increased high-risk ASCVD (OR = 3.229, 95% CI 1.544-6.751, p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Hyperuricemia is independently associated with high-risk ASCVD; Sarcopenia and high-risk ASCVD did not show an independent relationship, but there was a synergistic effect of the two on ASCVD risk, which may imply that managing both hyperuricemia and sarcopenia may have a greater cardiovascular benefit.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become one of the most common chronic liver diseases in the world. The risk factor for NAFLD is often considered to be obesity, but it can also occur in people with lean type, which is defined as lean NAFLD. Lean NAFLD is commonly associated with sarcopenia, a progressive loss of muscle quantity and quality. The pathological features of lean NAFLD such as visceral obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic inflammation are inducers of sarcopenia, whereas loss of muscle mass and function further exacerbates ectopic fat accumulation and lean NAFLD. Therefore, we discussed the association of sarcopenia and lean NAFLD, summarized the underlying pathological mechanisms, and proposed potential strategies to reduce the risks of lean NAFLD and sarcopenia in this review.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare the biomarker profile of pre-frail and frail adults in the UK Biobank cohort by sex. METHODS In total, 202,537 participants (67.8% women, aged 37 to 73 years) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Further, 31 biomarkers were investigated in this study. Frailty was defined using a modified version of the Frailty Phenotype. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to explore the biomarker profile of pre-frail and frail individuals categorized by sex. RESULTS Lower concentrations of apoA1, total, LDL, and HDL cholesterol, albumin, eGFRcys, vitamin D, total bilirubin, apoB, and testosterone (differences ranged from -0.30 to -0.02 per 1-SD change), as well as higher concentrations of triglycerides, GGT, cystatin C, CRP, ALP, and phosphate (differences ranged from 0.01 to 0.53 per 1-SD change), were identified both in pre-frail and frail men and women. However, some of the associations differed by sex. For instance, higher rheumatoid factor and urate concentrations were identified in pre-frail and frail women, while lower calcium, total protein, and IGF-1 concentrations were identified in pre-frail women and frail women and men. When the analyses were further adjusted for CRP, similar results were found. CONCLUSIONS Several biomarkers were linked to pre-frailty and frailty. Nonetheless, some of the associations differed by sex. Our findings contribute to a broader understanding of the pathophysiology of frailty as currently defined.

Abstract
Studies have indicated that the skeletal muscle mass and strength was related to serum uric acid (UA), but there is a lack of research on the association of skeletal muscle fat content with UA. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to investigate the correlation of skeletal muscle fat index (SMFI) and hyperuricemia (HUA) in Chinese adults. 500 subjects (306 men and 194 women) were included in the study. The participants were divided into four groups according to SMFI quartiles. Pearson's correlations between SMFI and metabolic variables were calculated. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between the quartiles of SMFI and risk of hyperuricemia. UA showed a positive association with SMFI after adjusted for BMI, age and gender. A significant association between the SMFI and risk of HUA was found, the OR for HUA was 2.79 (95% CI 1.18-6.59, p<0.05) in Q2, 2.41(95% CI 1.00-5.81, p<0.05) in Q3, and 2.63 (95% CI 1.03-6.72, p<0.05) in Q4, after adjusted for BMI. In conclusion, the SMFI was significantly associated with the level of serum UA, and the higher SMFI may indicate a higher risk of HUA, independent of BMI.
