Abstract
PURPOSE Sarcopenic obesity (SO), a condition characterized by the coexistence of obesity and sarcopenia, has primarily been studied in elderly populations. However, it can also affect individuals with chronic diseases. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of SO in patients with acromegaly. METHODS Observational, cross-sectional study, involving patients with acromegaly followed at a tertiary center and controls matched for age and sex. Health assessment questionnaire, physical tests, body composition and bone mineral density assessment, were performed in all participants. SO was diagnosed using criteria from ESPEN and EASO Consensus Statements. RESULTS 48 patients with acromegaly (acromegaly group - AG, 26 women, mean age 56.3 ± 11.6, mean BMI 31.3 ± 4.9) were compared to 48 controls (control group - CG, 26 women, mean age 56.7 ± 13.7, BMI 25.5 ± 4.7). Despite having greater total and appendicular lean mass, AG showed significant impairments in physical performance, particularly in strength, gait speed and balance (p < 0.05). The prevalence of SO in the AG was 16.7%, compared to 0% in the CG (p = 0.006), and positively correlated with increased fat mass and impaired physical performance. CONCLUSIONS SO is present in patients with acromegaly and is associated with notable functional impairments despite increased muscle mass.

Abstract
The scope of this study was to determine the diagnostic performance of ABSI for obesity and sarcopenic obesity, compared to the results of bioimpedance analysis (BIA) and BMI, by sex and age group. It involved a cross-sectional study with 12,793 participants in the second round of ELSA-Brasil (Longitudinal Study of Adult Health in Brazil), which obtained measurements of body fat percentage using BIA and anthropometry, verifying the performance of the diagnostic tests in order to compare the indices. The results showed that for obesity in men in all three age groups, the sensitivity was below 49%. Specificity ranged from 73% to 93%, with a higher percentage in the 65 to 79 age group. The same pattern was found for women, with sensitivity lower than 42%, and specificity ranged from 85% to 92%, and was higher in older women. With respect to sarcopenic obesity, the sensitivity and specificity among men in the three age groups were 72% was 99%, respectively. Among women, sensitivity was around 95% and specificity around 70% in all age groups. ABSI, compared to BIA, showed a reduced ability to identify obesity. However, it proved to be a good marker of sarcopenic obesity.

Abstract
Since sarcopenic obesity (SO) impacts negatively on our health, early detection of SO is essential. However, prevalence of SO in an apparently healthy population has not been well examined. This study aimed to elucidate the prevalence and related factors of SO in middle-aged women, and to investigate useful diagnostic criteria for SO. Body component analyses were conducted on 432 female Osaka University employees aged 30-59 during their health checkups. Healthy (H) and SO groups were defined using cutoff values of 5.7 kg/m2 for skeletal muscle mass index and 30% for percent body fat. Serum myostatin and insulin levels were additionally measured. Among 432 participants, the prevalence of SO was 6.3%. Grip strength (P < 0.0001) was lower and triglyceride (P = 0.0004) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.0105) levels, and Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (P = 0.0262) were higher in the SO group than in the H group. Serum myostatin levels in the SO group were lower than in the H group (3,107 pg/mL vs. 3,957 pg/mL, P = 0.0003). Myostatin levels may be suppressed in individuals with SO without any pre-existing conditions. Our diagnostic criteria for SO could reveal the risks for metabolic-related diseases and may be useful for the early detection of SO.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and its association with the level of physical activity, alone and combined with sedentary behavior. METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed. The sample was composed of 317 women aged between 24 and 59 years. Sarcopenic obesity was determined by the coexistence of sarcopenia (reduced muscle mass and strength) and obesity (% fat). Dual-energy x-ray absorption was used to evaluate muscle mass and % fat, with cutoff points of <15 kg and <31.71%, respectively. Strength was assessed by the handgrip test, with a cutoff point of <21.68 kg. Levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior were assessed using the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Individuals who did not achieve 150 minutes per week of physical activity were considered insufficiently active. The cutoff point for sedentary behavior was determined based on the 75th percentile (480 min/wk), considering excessive sedentary behavior (≥75th percentile) and low/moderate sedentary behavior (<75th percentile). RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was 7.9% (95% CI, 4.9-10.8). Sarcopenic obesity was associated with the general physical activity level (odds ratio, 3.96; 95% CI, 1.32-11.8) and being insufficiently active together with low/moderate sedentary behavior (odds ratio, 4.88; 95% CI, 1.49-16.0). CONCLUSIONS There was the presence of sarcopenic obesity in adult women which was associated with the level of general physical activity, alone and combined with sedentary behavior.

Abstract
AIM Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterized by the coexistence of the loss of muscle mass and function with excess adipose tissue. Its prevalence has increased concomitantly with population aging, becoming one of the most significant challenges for public health, threatening the quality of life and the physical and mental health of the elderly population. METHODS This study estimated the prevalence and factors associated with SO among adults and the elderly in Brazil's macro-regions, utilizing MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and the Virtual Health Library databases. Primary outcomes included SO prevalence overall and by subgroups, with secondary outcomes identifying associated factors. RESULTS A systematic review of 33 studies with 10 266 participants up to July 2023 showed a 17% prevalence of SO (95% confidence interval: 13-21%), using a random effects meta-analysis. The Central-West region had the highest occurrence (27%). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (26%) and bioimpedance (6%) were the top diagnostic methods. Protective factors were chronic kidney disease and healthy lifestyles; risk factors included socioeconomic status, functionality, lifestyle, biochemical parameters, and comorbidities such as osteoarthritis and apnea. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of SO in Brazil is significant, emerging as a critical public health problem. It is essential to direct attention to changes in prevalence rates in the coming years, given the rising obesity trends and the absolute increase in the elderly population. Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterized by concomitant sarcopenia and obesity and presents a high risk of disability, morbidity, and mortality among older adults. However, predictions based on sequential neural network SO studies and the relationship between physical fitness factors and SO are lacking. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for SO in older adults by focusing on physical fitness factors. A comprehensive dataset of older Korean adults participating in national fitness programs was analyzed using sequential neural networks. Appendicular skeletal muscle/body weight was defined as SO using an anthropometric equation. Independent variables included body fat (BF, %), waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and various physical fitness factors. The dependent variable was a binary outcome (possible SO vs normal). We analyzed hyperparameter tuning and stratified K-fold validation to optimize a predictive model. The prevalence of SO was significantly higher in women (13.81%) than in men, highlighting sex-specific differences. The optimized neural network model and Shapley Additive Explanations analysis demonstrated a high validation accuracy of 93.1%, with BF% and absolute grip strength emerging as the most influential predictors of SO. This study presents a highly accurate predictive model for SO in older adults, emphasizing the critical roles of BF% and absolute grip strength. We identified BF, absolute grip strength, and sit-and-reach as key SO predictors. Our findings underscore the sex-specific nature of SO and the importance of physical fitness factors in its prediction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) have emerged as significant contributors to negative health outcomes in the past decade. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of probable sarcopenia, sarcopenia, and SO in a community-dwelling population of 1151 adults aged ≥55 years in Lima, Peru. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted between 2018 and 2020. Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of low muscle strength (LMS) and low muscle mass (LMM) according to European (EWGSOP2), US (FNIH) and Asian (AWGS2) guidelines. We measured muscle strength by maximum handgrip strength and muscle mass using bioelectrical impedance analyzer. SO was defined as a body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2 and sarcopenia. RESULTS The study participants had a mean age of 66.2 years (SD 7.1), age range between 60 to 92 years old, of which 621 (53.9%) were men. Among the sample, 41.7% were classified as obese (BMI ≥30.0 kg/m²). The prevalence of probable sarcopenia was estimated to be 22.7% (95%CI: 20.3-25.1) using the EWGSOP2 criteria and 27.8% (95%CI: 25.2-30.4) using the AWGS2 criteria. Sarcopenia prevalence, assessed using skeletal muscle index (SMI), was 5.7% (95%CI: 4.4-7.1) according to EWGSOP2 and 8.3% (95%CI: 6.7-9.9) using AWGS2 criteria. The prevalence of sarcopenia based on the FNIH criteria was 18.1% (95%CI: 15.8-20.3). The prevalence of SO, considering different sarcopenia definitions, ranged from 0.8% (95%CI: 0.3-1.3) to 5.0% (95%CI: 3.8-6.3). CONCLUSION Our findings reveal substantial variation in the prevalence of sarcopenia and SO, underscoring the necessity for context-specific cut-off values. Although the prevalence of SO was relatively low, this result may be underestimated. Furthermore, the consistently high proportion of probable sarcopenia and sarcopenia point to a substantial public health burden.

Abstract
AIM Skeletal muscle mass to visceral fat area ratio (SVR) has been recognised as an index of sarcopenic obesity. SVR is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), metabolic syndrome and arterial stiffness which are known risk factors for cognitive dysfunction. We aimed to investigate association between SVR and cognitive function in patients with T2DM. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 1326 patients with T2DM and mean age 61.3 ± 8.0 years. SVR was assessed based on bioelectrical impedance measurements of muscle mass and visceral fat area (VFA). Cognitive function was assessed using Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS). Linear regression was used to examine the association between SVR in quartiles and RBANS score, adjusting for demographics, education, presence of depressive symptoms, clinical covariates and medications. RESULTS The lower SVR quartiles were negatively associated with RBANS total score in the unadjusted analysis. The corresponding coefficients for Quartiles 1 and 2 SVR were -3.79 (95 % CI -5.39 to -2.19; p < 0.001) and -1.47 (95 % CI -2.86 to -0.07; p = 0.039) in fully adjusted analysis. The negative association between Quartile 1 SVR and RBANS score was evident in immediate memory, delayed memory, visuo-spatial construction, language and attention domains. Muscle mass and VFA alone had weaker associations with RBANS scores. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated, for the first time, an independent association between reduced SVR and lower cognitive function. This is evident in global and multiple cognitive domains. The synergistic effects of reduced muscle mass and visceral obesity may be more pronounced than their independent effects on cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and its associated factors in community-dwelling older adults at risk of malnutrition based on the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), and Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI). METHODS The study participants were 345 adults aged >65 years who visited Geriatric Internal Medicine outpatient clinics. The study included people without acute illness for whom the risk of malnutrition could be assessed and appropriate measurements taken. At the baseline visit, participants' data and measurements were gathered. The primary data included sociodemographic details, anthropometric measurements, malnutrition screening tests, and functional assessments. RESULTS The participants' mean age was 76.21±5.59 years, and 57.1% were men (n=97). The prevalence rate of sarcopenia was 45.5%. Compared to individuals without sarcopenia, those with it were older; had lower MNA, PNI, and GNRI scores; and had lower muscle mass, muscle strength, and lower leg circumferences (p<0.001). After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we found that sarcopenia, advanced age, male sex, high risk of malnutrition, calf circumference, and a low PNI score were all significantly associated with a low GNRI score (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia was significantly associated with advanced age, male sex, and high risk of malnutrition. Patients' nutritional and functional status should always be assessed for therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Singapore Study of Macro-Angiopathy and microvascular Reactivity in Type 2 Diabetes (SMART2D) is a prospective cohort study which was started in 2011 to investigate the effect of risk factors on vascular function and diabetes-related complications in Asians. We aimed to compare the longitudinal change in risk factors by accounting for batch effect and assess the tracking stability of risk factors over time in patients recruited for SMART2D. In this study, we (1) described batch effect and its extent across a heterogenous range of longitudinal data parameters; (2) mitigated batch effect through statistical approach; and (3) assessed the tracking stability of the risk factors over time. METHODS A total of 2258 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were recruited at baseline. The study adopted a three-wave longitudinal design with intervals of 3 years between consecutive waves. The changes in a few selected risk factors were assessed after calibration, assuming patients with similar demographic and anthropometry profile had similar physiology. The tracking pattern of the risk factors was determined with stability coefficients derived from generalised estimating equations. RESULTS The medians of the longitudinal differences in risk factors between the waves were mostly modest at <10%. Larger increases in augmentation index (AI), aortic systolic blood pressure (BP) and aortic mean BP were consistently observed after calibration. The medians of the longitudinal differences in AI, aortic systolic BP and aortic mean BP between the waves were <2% before calibration, but increased slightly to <5% after calibration. Most of the risk factors had moderate to high tracking stability. Muscle mass and serum creatinine were among those with relatively high tracking stability. CONCLUSIONS The longitudinal differences in parameters between the waves were overall modest after calibration, suggesting that calibration may attenuate longitudinal differences inflated by non-biological factors such as systematic drift due to batch effect. Changes of the hemodynamic parameters are robust over time and not entirely attributable to age. Our study also demonstrated moderate to high tracking stability for most of the parameters.

Abstract
Remnant cholesterol (RC) is a highly atherogenic lipid. Previous studies have shown that RC was closely associated with many metabolism-related diseases. However, the relationship of RC with metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear. This study's objective is to investigate the relationship of RC with MetS. A total of 60,799 adults who received health assessments were included in this study. RC was calculated by subtracting the directly measured values for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) from total cholesterol (TC) and divided into 5 groups according to its quintile. MetS diagnosis according to National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATP III) definitions. Application of receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and multivariate logistic regression to assess the association of RC with MetS. In RC quintile groups, the prevalence of MetS was 0.84, 1.10, 1.92, 3.87 and 37.71%, respectively. Multivariate logical regression analysis showed that RC and MetS maintained a stable independent positive correlation between both sexes. An interaction test further showed that the MetS risk associated with RC was significantly higher in women than in men. Moreover, ROC analysis results showed that RC had high accuracy in identifying MetS, especially among young and middle-aged men [(area under the curve: AUC) < 30 years: 0.9572, 30-39 years: 0.9306, 40-49 years: 0.9067]. The current study provided the first evidence of a positive association between RC and MetS, and that this correlation was stronger in women than in man, which may be due to the relative deficiency of estrogen in women.

Abstract
The age-related loss of muscle mass promotes many impairments. Training and protein supplementation are suggested to prevent muscle wasting, but recommendations for all populations are not based on scientific evidence. This study combines protein/carbohydrate supplementation (PCS) and training for seniors and postmenopausal women. Project A: 51 postmenopausal women (PMW, 57.3 ± 3.0 years old) underwent health-oriented training (12 weeks, moderate-strength training + moderate-endurance training). The intervention group (IG) additionally received 110 g sour milk cheese (SMC) and toast. Project B: 25 women and 6 men (65.9 ± 4.9 years old) performed intense sling training (12 weeks). The IG additionally received 110 g SMC, toast, and buttermilk. Strength was tested before and after in both studies. Project A: there was significant increase in strength, no additional effect of PCS, and a reduction in body fat in the controls. Project B: there was significant increase in strength, significant additional effects of PCS for trunk strength, and a significant reduction in body weight. Combining training and PCS may counteract strength loss. Combined endurance/resistance training is recommended to PMW for whom the benefits of PCS are restricted. Aged subjects may benefit from PCS when training intensely, but these benefits may be strongly individual.

Abstract
Background: The aging society worldwide carries public and inevitable issues. Aging is accompanied by multiple diseases, and the health impacts challenge healthcare and social systems. In addition to medical treatment, exercise has been recognized as an effective strategy not only for disease prevention and alleviation, but also for multiple health benefits on health promotion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a suitable Pilates exercise intervention program on health maintenance and benefits in community-dwelling middle-aged women with a quasi-experimental design. Methods: We recruited healthy middle-aged community-dwelling women who had not regularly exercised in the previous three months. The participants were assigned to the experimental (n = 22) and control (n = 23) groups based on a quasi-experimental design. The experimental group participated in a mat-based Pilates exercise class twice a week (1 h/session) throughout the 12-week intervention, whereas there was no intervention for the control group. Body composition, basal metabolic rate, and functional physical fitness—comprising cardiovascular capacity, flexibility, muscular strength of upper limbs, muscular strength of lower limbs, core strength, agility, static balance, and dynamic balance—were assessed as primary outcomes in both groups before and after the intervention. Results: There were no significant differences in any of the dependent variables between the two groups before the exercise intervention. After the 12-week intervention, body composition, including body mass index, body fat (−1.5 to 3%), and basal metabolic rate (+10.6%), and functional fitness, including flexibility (+3.5%), core strength (+31.5%), lower-limb strength (+13.5%), agility (+7.3%), and balance (+4.2%), improved significantly in the experimental group relative to the control group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the improvement in physical fitness in lower-limb strength, agility, and balance for fall prevention also demonstrated higher clinical significance than the control. Conclusions: This 12-week mat-based Pilates exercise program significantly improved body composition, basal metabolic rate, and functional physical fitness in community-dwelling middle-aged women. The beneficial effects of Pilates exercise programs may thus promote improved health in the middle-aged female population, with practical implications for communities.

Abstract
The coexistence of sarcopenia and obesity characterizes sarcopenic obesity. In this condition, there is an imbalance between lean and fat mass amounts. It is a prevalent issue that is gaining prevalence among the elderly population. To evaluate the condition, allied health professionals may employ non-invasive diagnostic techniques, such as gait speed, skeletal muscle mass, and muscle strength. Nevertheless, early diagnosis and treatment of pathology are essential for preventing debilitating effects and providing the highest quality of care. This article reviews the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in numerous medical conditions, such as cancer, arthritis, postoperative cases, diabetes mellitus, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. In addition, this paper aims to examine the available evidence regarding the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in other conditions along with their diagnostic markers and therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Our aim was to summarize the available literature on three yet unsolved questions, namely: 1) the dilemma surrounding definition of sarcopenic obesity (SO), especially in young adults; 2) the potential impact of this phenotype on weight-loss programme outcomes; and 3) the strategies for optimum management (prevention/treatment) of SO in clinical practice. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION A literature review using the PubMed/Medline database was conducted, and data were summarized based on a narrative approach. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS Firstly, SO can be screened by the 30-sec sit-to-stand test; ≤25 and ≤21; and confirmed by the ratio of (appendicular lean mass/Body Mass Index) ≤0.789 and 0.512 in males and females, respectively. Secondly, SO is associated with impaired physical fitness, reduced resting energy expenditure and an inactive lifestyle, that seems to negatively impact on weight-management outcomes, namely increasing early dropout and difficulty in maintaining weight loss in the long term. Finally, prevention/treatment of SO in young adults must be realized through tailored lifestyle intervention (diet+exercise) to preserve and improve strength and muscle mass, even where weight loss is necessary. CONCLUSIONS Our findings have clinical implications since they may help in screening, managing and improving the weight-loss outcomes of patients with SO in clinical settings.

METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 368 women from 50 years to 80 years old. Anthropometric and biochemical characteristics were analyzed, and physical performance was evaluated. The statistical analysis used measures of central tendency and dispersion for descriptive data, Pearson correlations to demonstrate the initial associations between the variables, and canonical correlation (CC) to evaluate the relationship between the set of anthropometric adiposity indices and performance-related variables. RESULTS The participants had a mean age of 58.57±8.21 years, a visceral adiposity index of 7.09±4.23, a body mass index of 29.20±4.94 kg/m2, and a conicity index of 1.33±0.07. The average handgrip strength was 25.06±4.89 kgf, gait speed was 1.07±0.23 m/s, and the mean Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) score was 10.83±1.36. The first canonical function presented the highest shared variance, CC, and redundancy index (cumulative percentage of variance, 82.52; Wilks' lambda, 0.66; CC, 0.532; p<0.001). From the analysis of this canonical function, the conicity index (-0.59) displayed inverse correlations with handgrip strength (0.84) and the SPPB (0.68), as well as a direct correlation with gait speed (-0.43). CONCLUSIONS In middle-aged and older women, there was an inverse relationship between the conicity index and muscle strength and power, while a direct relationship was found between the same index and gait speed.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the longitudinal association between skeletal muscle mass (SMM) loss and cognitive decline over time in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study of 453 patients from SMART2D cohort with follow-up intervals of 1.6 to 6.4 years. Baseline and follow-up measurements included bio-impedance analysis (BIA) measure of skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) and Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) measure of cognitive function. We examined the association between annual rate of SMI and RBANS scores using linear regression, adjusting for demographics, education, depression, clinical co-variables and presence of apolipoprotein E4 (APOE) Ɛ4 allele. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 60.3 ± 7.4 years. Compared to patients with Tertile 1 SMI change, the group with greater SMI decline (Tertile 3 SMI change) experienced 0.30 decline in RBANS total score (95%CI -0.57 to -0.03; p = 0.030) in the adjusted analysis. RBANS scores for subdomains in immediate memory and visuo-spatial/construction were lower in Tertile 3 SMI change group with corresponding coefficients -0.54 (95%CI -1.01 to -0.06; p = 0.026), and -0.71 (95%CI -1.30 to -0.12; p = 0.019) respectively. CONCLUSION In patients with T2DM, BIA measure of muscle mass loss over time was independently associated with cognitive decline globally and in the domains of memory and visuo-spatial/construction.

Abstract
Oligonol is a low‐molecular‐weight polyphenol product derived from lychee (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) fruits. This study was focused on the effects of oligonol on the skeletal muscle of ovariectomized rats. We randomly divided female Sprague–Dawley rats into three groups: a sham surgery control group (Sham), an ovariectomy (OVX) group, and an OVX group treated with oligonol (OVX + Oligonol). Oligonol was intraperitoneally administrated at 30 mg/kg daily for 6 weeks. Oligonol treatment after OVX decreased body weight and fat mass, regulated lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle, without loss of lean mass and bone. Bone turnover was not affected by oligonol. In protein synthesis and degradation, oligonol increased the levels of the mammalian target of rapamycin and its downstream targets, eukaryotic initiation factor 4E‐binding protein 1 and 70‐kDa ribosomal protein S6 kinase, and it stimulated the expression of ubiquitin‐proteasome pathway proteins, the forkhead box transcription factors of the class O and the muscle ring‐finger protein‐1. Moreover, oligonol treatment enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics. Thus, our results indicated that oligonol treatment had beneficial effects on the skeletal muscle in an estrogen‐deficiency rat model.

Abstract
AIMS Little is known about pathophysiology of sarcopenia in diabetes. We aimed to study amino acid profile associated with skeletal muscle mass loss longitudinally in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). METHODS This is a prospective study of 1140 patients aged 56.6 ± 10.6 years from the SMART2D cohort. Skeletal muscle mass was measured using bio-impedance analysis at baseline and follow-up. Amino acids were measured by mass spectrometry. RESULTS Over a period of up to 7.9 years, 43.9% experienced skeletal muscle mass loss. Lower baseline valine, leucine and isoleucine levels were associated with decreased skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) with corresponding coefficient 0.251(95 %CI 0.009 to 0.493), 0.298(95 %CI 0.051 to 0.544)) and 0.366(95 %CI 0.131 to 0.600). Higher baseline valine, leucine, isoleucine, alanine and tryptophan levels were associated with reduced odds of muscle mass loss with corresponding odds ratio (OR)0.797 (95 %CI 0.690 to 0.921), 0.825 (95 %CI 0.713 to 0.955), 0.826 (95 %CI 0.718-0.950), 0.847 (95 %CI 0.739-0.969) and 0.835 (95 %CI 0.720-0.979). CONCLUSION The branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine and isoleucine were positively associated with change in SMI and reduced odds of muscle mass loss longitudinally. Further studies should be conducted to elucidate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the relationship between these amino acids and muscle mass loss in T2DM.

Abstract
Resumo Introdução: Sarcopenia e obesidade têm relação com diversas condições de saúde. Poucos estudos, entretanto, têm analisado a presença destas condições em mulheres incontinentes no climatério, e não está claro se existe associação destas com a gravidade da incontinência urinária (IU). Objetivo: Analisar provável sarcopenia, sarcopenia e obesidade em mulheres com diferentes gravidades de IU na fase do climatério e a associação da sarcopenia com a gravidade da IU. Métodos: Estudo transversal realizado em maternidade pública do nordeste do Brasil, em mulheres com IU a partir de 40 anos. Foram avaliadas questões sociodemográficas, histórico uroginecológico, gravidade da IU (Incontinence Severity Index - ISI), força de preensão e medidas antropométricas (circunferência abdominal e índice de massa corporal - IMC). Foram analisadas médias e desvios-padrão, frequências absolutas e relativas, teste T e exato de Fisher (significância de 5%). Resultados: Amostra de 177 mulheres com média de 56,3 (± 9,7) anos. Sobre a IU, 69 (39,0%) mulheres apresentavam IU mista e 53,1% gravidade moderada. Apenas 18,1% apresentavam IMC normal, 46,8% obesidade geral e 80,3% obesidade abdominal. Provável sarcopenia (baixa força) foi observada em 35 (20%) mulheres e sarcopenia em 3,4%. Mulheres com IU grave ou muito grave apresentaram menor força de preensão (p = 0,02) e maior IMC (p = 0,04). A sarcopenia foi associada à maior gravidade de IU (p = 0,005). Conclusão: Observou-se provável sarcopenia e maior IMC em mulheres com maior gravidade de IU e associação da sarcopenia com a maior gravidade de IU. São necessárias medidas preventivas quanto a tais condições, evitando futuras complicações.

Abstract Introduction: Sarcopenia and obesity are associated with several health conditions. Few studies, however, have analyzed the presence of these conditions in climacteric women with incontinence, and the association between these conditions and the severity of urinary incontinence (UI) is not clear. Objective: To analyze probable sarcopenia, sarcopenia, and obesity in climacteric women with different UI severities, and the association between sarcopenia and UI severity. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study in a public maternity hospital in Northeast Brazil, with women aged ≥ 40 years. Sociodemographic issues, urogynecological history, UI severity (Incontinence Severity Index - ISI), grip strength, and anthropometric measures (waist circumference and body mass index - BMI) were evaluated. Means, standard deviations, absolute and relative frequencies, T test, and Fisher exact test were used (significance at 5%). Results: The sample comprised 177 women, with a mean age of 56.3 (± 9.7) years. Regarding UI, 69 (39.0%) women presented mixed UI, and 53.1% presented moderate UI severity. Only 18.1% women had normal BMIs, and 46.8% had general obesity and 80.3% had abdominal obesity. Probable sarcopenia (low strength) was observed in 35 (20%) women, and sarcopenia, in 3.4%. Women with severe/very severe UI presented lower grip strengths (p = 0.02) and higher BMIs (p = 0.04). Sarcopenia was associated with greater UI severity (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Probable sarcopenia and higher BMI were observed in women with greater UI severities, and sarcopenia was associated with greater UI severity. Preventive measures are needed in such conditions to avoid future complications.

Abstract
Aging women experience hormonal changes, such as decreased estrogen and increased circulating androgen, due to natural or surgical menopause. These hormonal changes make postmenopausal women vulnerable to body composition changes, muscle loss, and abdominal obesity; with a sedentary lifestyle, these changes affect overall energy expenditure and basal metabolic rate. In addition, fat redistribution due to hormonal changes leads to changes in body shape. In particular, increased bone marrow-derived adipocytes due to estrogen loss contribute to increased visceral fat in postmenopausal women. Enhanced visceral fat lipolysis by adipose tissue lipoprotein lipase triggers the production of excessive free fatty acids, causing insulin resistance and metabolic diseases. Because genes involved in β-oxidation are downregulated by estradiol loss, excess free fatty acids produced by lipolysis of visceral fat cannot be used appropriately as an energy source through β-oxidation. Moreover, aged women show increased adipogenesis due to upregulated expression of genes related to fat accumulation. As a result, the catabolism of ATP production associated with β-oxidation decreases, and metabolism associated with lipid synthesis increases. This review describes the changes in energy metabolism and lipid metabolic abnormalities that are the background of weight gain in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social disadvantage may contribute to increased prevalence of sarcopenia and obesity. This study investigated if socioeconomic factors are associated with obesity, sarcopenia, or sarcopenic obesity (SO), in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This was a cross-sectional analysis of data from the Tasmanian Older Adult Cohort study. Obesity was defined by body fat percentage (Men: ≥25%; Women: ≥35%) and sarcopenia was defined as the lowest 20% of sex-specific appendicular lean mass (ALM)/height (m2) and handgrip strength. Socioeconomic factors investigated were education (tertiary degree, secondary or no secondary school), occupation (high skilled white-collar, low skilled white-collar, or blue-collar) and residential area (advantaged or disadvantaged area). Multinomial logistic regression analyses yielding odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) were performed and adjusted for potential confounders. Mediation analysis was performed. RESULTS 1099 older adults (63.0 ± 7.5 years; 51.1% women) participated. Older adults with a tertiary degree were significantly less likely to have obesity (0.68; 0.47, 0.98) and SO (0.48; 0.24, 0.94) compared with those who had no secondary schooling. No associations were found for occupation. Similarly, older adults living in advantaged areas were significantly less likely to have obesity (0.61; 0.39, 0.95). Steps per day mediated the association between residential area and body fat percentage by 51%. CONCLUSION Lower educational attainment, but not occupation, was associated with increased likelihood for both obesity and SO in community-dwelling older adults. Low physical activity levels in disadvantaged areas substantially contributed to higher obesity prevalence in this population. Further research is necessary to confirm whether similar associations exist in populations with greater levels of social disadvantage and to design effective community-based interventions.

Abstract
Obesity may aggravate the effects of sarcopenia on skeletal muscle structure and function in the elderly, but no study has attempted to identify the gene variants associated with sarcopenia in obese women. Therefore, the aims of the present study were to: (1) describe neuromuscular function in sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic women with or without obesity; (2) identify gene variants associated with sarcopenia in older obese women. In 307 Caucasian women (71 ± 6 years, 66.3 ± 11.3 kg), skeletal muscle mass was estimated using bioelectric impedance, and function was tested with a 30 s one-leg standing-balance test. Biceps brachii thickness and vastus lateralis cross-sectional area (VLACSA) were measured with B-mode ultrasonography. Handgrip strength, maximum voluntary contraction elbow flexion (MVCEF), and knee extension torque (MVCKE) were measured by dynamometry, and MVCKE/VLACSA was calculated. Genotyping was performed for 24 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), selected based on their previous associations with muscle-related phenotypes. Based on sarcopenia and obesity thresholds, groups were classified as sarcopenic obese, non-sarcopenic obese, sarcopenic non-obese, or non-sarcopenic non-obese. A two-way analysis of covariance was used to assess the main effects of sarcopenia and obesity on muscle-related phenotypes and binary logistic regression was performed for each SNP to investigate associations with sarcopenia in obesity. There were no significant obesity * sarcopenic status interactions for any of the investigated muscle-related phenotypic parameters. Neither sarcopenia nor obesity had a significant effect on biceps brachii thickness, but sarcopenia was associated with lower VLACSA (p = 0.003). Obesity was associated with lower MVCEF (p = 0.032), MVCKE (p = 0.047), and MVCKE/VLACSA (p = 0.012) with no significant effect of sarcopenia. Adjusted for age and height, three SNPs (ACTN3 rs1815739, MTHFR rs1801131, and MTHFR rs1537516) were associated with sarcopenia in obese participants. Sarcopenia was associated with a smaller muscle size, while obesity resulted in a lower muscle quality irrespective of sarcopenia. Three gene variants (ACTN3 rs1815739, MTHFR rs1801131, and MTHFR rs1537516) suspected to affect muscle function, homocysteine metabolism, or DNA methylation, respectively, were associated with sarcopenia in obese elderly women. Understanding the skeletal muscle features affected by sarcopenia and obesity, and identification of genes related to sarcopenia in obese women, may facilitate early detection of individuals at particular risk of sarcopenic obesity.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of age on the association between daily gait speed (DGS) and abdominal obesity defined by visceral fat area (VFA). A cross-sectional study was performed using data from an annual community-based health check-up. A total of 699 participants aged 20–88 years were enrolled in this analysis. DGS was assessed using tri-axial accelerometers worn for ≥ 7 days with at least 10 measuring hours each day. VFA was measured using a visceral fat meter. Since DGS differed significantly with age, the participants were divided into two groups: younger adults (YA), aged 20–49 years, and older adults (OA), aged 50–88 years. The association between DGS and VFA differed significantly with age (r = 0.099 for YA and r = − 0.080 for OA; test for difference between correlation coefficients, P = 0.023). In OA, the adjusted odds ratio of abdominal obesity (VFA ≥ 100 cm2) was 0.40 (95% confidence interval 0.18, 0.88, P = 0.022) for the highest DGS quartile (DGS ≥ 1.37 m/s) compared to that for the lowest quartile (DGS < 1.11 m/s), whereas no significant association was found in YA. These data could aid in raising awareness of the self-management of obesity via DGS monitoring, especially in OA.

Abstract
The present study compared metabolic risk factors, physical performances, and musculoskeletal impairment among categories determined by visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and trunk skeletal muscle (SM) mass in middle-aged Japanese men. In total, 1026 healthy Japanese males aged between 35 and 59 years were categorized into 4 groups according to the amount of VAT and SM in the trunk measured using low-dose computed tomography (LowVAT-HighSM, LowVAT-LowSM, HighVAT-HighSM, and HighVAT-LowSM). Height, body mass waist circumference, body fat, intramuscular adipose tissue (IntraMAT), subcutaneous adipose tissue, biochemical blood profiles (triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and γ-glutamyl trans peptidase), physical performances (trunk flexibility, the chair-stand test, two-step length and hand-grip strength), the prevalence of low back pain, and lifestyle habits for exercise, alcohol intake and smoking, were compared among the groups. The results showed that LowVAT-HighSM had significantly superior biochemical blood profiles and physical performances to the other groups. HighVAT-LowSM had significantly higher %IntraMAT and the prevalence of low back pain. The two-step length, which is an index of walking ability, significantly differed according to the four subject categories. These results indicate that metabolic risk factors, physical performances, and prevalence of low back pain in middle-aged Japanese men may differ among four categories determined by VAT and trunk SM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical health is an important factor for what is considered successful aging. Using valid and reproducible tools to classify PH of older adults may help to develop appropriate rehabilitation protocols for this population. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the convergent validity and reproducibility of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) core set to classify the physical health of older adults. METHODS A total of 101 older adults were evaluated for handgrip strength, physical performance (Short Physical Performance Battery), and physical activity level (International Physical Activity Questionnaire). Physical health was classified with the ICF core set (14 categories of body functions, 4 of body structures, 9 of activity and participation, and 3 environmental factors) and an impairment index was calculated for each component. RESULTS Higher levels of physical activity were associated to lower impairment index in the body function and activity and participation components, but was not associated to environmental factors. Better physical performance and handgrip strength were also related to lower impairment index in all components. The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient analysis indicated good reproducibility for body function, body structure, the capacity component of the activity and participation, and for two environmental factors (use of medications and assistive devices), but moderate reproducibility for the performance component of activity and participation, and poor reproducibility for the environmental factor related to access to health services. CONCLUSION The ICF core set for the physical health of older adults is a valid and reproducible tool and can be used in clinical practice and research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the changes in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) level and metabolic indices such as blood pressure, serum lipid level and serum glucose level according to grip strength in postmenopausal women. METHOD Data from participants (postmenopausal women) in the Seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2018 were analyzed. Absolute handgrip strength was the sum of the maximal grip strength of both hands, and relative handgrip was calculated as absolute handgrip divided by the body mass index. We performed linear regression analysis after adjusting for confounders to assess the influence of grip strength on hs-CRP level and metabolic indices. RESULTS Linear regression analysis showed that after adjusting for confounders, with an increased absolute grip strength, systolic blood pressure and hs-CRP levels were decreased; however, the changes were not significant for the remaining indices. Relative grip strength was associated with hs-CRP levels and metabolic indices. With a high relative grip strength, hs-CRP, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, hemoglobin A1c and triglyceride levels were decreased, while the high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was increased. CONCLUSION Our study evaluated the overall health status using grip strength in postmenopausal women. The grip strength adjusted by body size was suitable in evaluating the overall health status, including inflammatory and metabolic indices. Additionally, increased grip strength was associated with a better health status in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Background The reduction of female sex hormones causes changes in the contractile properties of muscles as well as infiltration of fat in the muscle tissue. This results in a consequent decline in muscle strength. These changes are related to higher levels of functional impairment and physical disability. In this sense, several anthropometric indices have been used to quantify body and visceral fat. Thus, the objective of this paper is to propose cutoff points for adiposity anthropometric indices in order to identify low muscle mass, as well as to analyze the relationship between these indices and low muscle mass in middle-aged and older women. Methods Cross-sectional analytical study carried out in the Northeast of Brazil. The sample was formed by 593 women between 40—80 years old. Data collection included anthropometric assessment (BMI: Body Mass Index – WC: Waist Circumference – WHR: Waist-to-hip Ratio – WHtR: Waist-to-height Ratio – CI: Conicity Index – BAI: Body Adiposity Index – VAI: Visceral Adiposity Index – LAP: Lipid Accumulation Product), bioimpedance test and biochemical dosage. Moreover, sociodemographic data and practice of physical activity were collected. Descriptive statistics, Student's t-test, ROC curves, chi-squared and logistic regression were performed. Results The participants had a mean age of 53.11 (8.89) years, BMI of 28.49 (5.17) kg/m2 and WC of 95.35 (10.39). The prevalence of low muscle mass was 19.4%. Based on sensitivity and specificity of adiposity anthropometric indices, cutoff points were developed to identify the presence of low muscle mass (p < 0.05), except for VAI. After logistic regression, WC (OR = 6.2; CI 95%: 1.4—28.1), WHR (OR = 1.8; CI: 1.0—3.4), WHtR (OR = 5.0; CI 95%: 1.0—23.7) and BAI (OR = 14.5; CI 95%: 6.6—31.7) were associated with low muscle mass. Conclusions All anthropometric indices, except VAI, showed adequate accuracy in identifying low muscle mass in women, especially those that took into account WC. This suggests that they can become accessible and also be cost-effective strategies for assessing and managing health outcomes related to muscle mass analysis.

Abstract
The lack of long-term maintenance of the weight loss achieved during weight-management programs is the major cause of failure in obesity treatments. The identification of factors related to this outcome has clinical implications. Therefore, we aimed to assess the relationship between sarcopenic obesity (SO) and the weight-loss percentage (WL%). The WL% was measured at the six-month follow-up and after more than 12 months, in 46 adult participants with obesity, during an individualized weight-management program where participants were categorized as having or not having SO at the baseline. At the six-month follow-up, participants with SO did not display a significant difference in terms of WL%, when compared to those without SO (-10.49 ± 5.75% vs. -12.73 ± 4.30%; p = 0.148). However, after a longer term (i.e., >12 months), the WL% appeared to be significantly lower in the former (SO vs. non-SO) (-7.34 ± 6.29% vs. -11.43 ± 4.31%; p = 0.024). In fact, partial correlation analysis revealed a relationship between SO at the baseline and a lower WL% after more than 12 months (ρ = -0.425, p = 0.009), after controlling for age, sex, and body mass index (BMI). Participants with SO appeared to face more difficulties in maintaining the achieved WL over a longer term (>12 months follow-up) by comparison with their counterparts (i.e., non-SO). Should this finding be replicated in larger-sample studies, new strategies should be adopted for these patients in order to improve this clinical outcome, especially during the weight-maintenance phase.

Abstract
AIMS We examined the longitudinal relationship between baseline skeletal muscle mass and its change over time with eGFR decline and albuminuria progression among Asians with type 2 diabetes(T2D). METHODS This was a prospective cohort study of 1272 T2D patients. Skeletal muscle mass was estimated using tetra-polar multi-frequency bio-impedance analysis and Skeletal Muscle Mass Index(SMI) was defined as skeletal muscle mass/weight * 100. RESULTS After up to 8 years of follow-up, 33.3% of participants had CKD progression and 28.3% albuminuria progression. Every 1-SD above baseline SMI was associated with 18% lower risk of CKD progression[Hazards Ratio(HR)0.82; 95%CI 0.70-0.97; p = 0.018] and 17% lower risk of albuminuria progression [HR 0.83 (95%CI 0.71-0.97; p = 0.017)]. The largest decrease in SMI over time was associated with 67% higher risk of CKD progression, compared to those with the smallest change from baseline SMI tertile 2[HR 1.67 (95%CI 1.10-2.55); p = 0.016]. Pigment epithelium-derived factor(PEDF) and plasma leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein (LRG1) accounted for 40.1% of the association between SMI and CKD progression. CONCLUSIONS Low baseline skeletal muscle mass and its reduction over time is associated with increased risk of progression of CKD among Asians with T2D. PEDF and LRG1 mediated the inverse relationship between SMI and CKD progression.

Abstract
Objective In this study, we aimed to examine the association between physical activity patterns and sarcopenia in Arab men. Methods This cross-sectional study included 363 men (47.7 ± 15.4 years). We analyzed appendicular lean mass (ALM), handgrip strength test, and physical activity levels. ALM divided by height (meters) squared was calculated (ALM/Ht 2 ), and participants with −1 and −2 standard deviations below the sex-specific mean for Saudi young adults were considered to have sarcopenia class I and class II, respectively. Independent t-tests, analysis of variance, and Mann–Whitney U tests were performed to determine mean and median differences. Results We observed a significant difference between participants with and without sarcopenia in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA); the correlation between ALM/H2 and MVPA was borderline significant. With a 1-hour/week increase in MVPA, ALM/Ht 2 increased by 0.30 kg/m2. Total and ALM, handgrip strength, and MVPA were significantly lower in participants age >60 years; fat mass and waist circumference were unchanged as compared with middle-aged participants. Conclusions We identified an association between time spent in recreational MVPA and lean muscle mass among Arab men. Future studies should examine the role of MVPA training programs on muscle mass and strength in older men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity and its association with functionality, lifestyle, biomarkers, and morbidities in older adults. METHODS The study analyzed cross-sectional data from 270 older adults who participated in phase III of the Frailty in Brazilian Older People Study (Fragilidade em Idosos Brasileiros-Rio de Janeiro, FIBRA-RJ study-2013). They took part in a home interview surveying socioeconomic, demographic, lifestyle, morbidities, and functional data. Blood was collected for biochemical marker analysis and participants' body composition was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. For women, the diagnosis of sarcopenic obesity was defined at a body fat percentage ≥38% and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMMI) <5.45 kg/m2. For men, a fat percentage ≥27% and ASMMI <7.26 kg/m2 was defined as sarcopenic obesity. Multivariate analysis was performed using a multinomial regression model (95% confidence intervals), with sarcopenic obesity as the outcome. RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenic obesity was 29.3%. In the final fitted model, the variables that displayed statistically significant association with sarcopenic obesity were lower gait speed, self-reported medical diagnosis of arthrosis or arthritis, and high levels of glycemia. CONCLUSION The study showed a high prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in non-institutionalized older adults in Brazil. The finding that this condition was associated with modifiable risk factors may provide insights into measures directed at prevention and reduction of the risk of sarcopenic obesity in this population subgroup.

Abstract
Background The association between physical fitness performance tests and anthropometric indices is not clear. The study aims to explore the association between physical fitness performance and anthropometric indices in Taiwanese community-dwelling adults. This may help in monitoring anthropometric indices to improve physical fitness. Methods We recruited 2216 participants aged 23–64 years between 2014 and 2017. Physical fitness performance, including abdominal muscular endurance (60-s sit-up test), flexibility (sit-and-reach test), and cardiorespiratory endurance (3-min step test), was evaluated in all participants. The association of the physical fitness performance and anthropometric indices, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), was analyzed using linear regression, with adjustments for age and gender. Results Body mass index was negatively associated with abdominal muscular endurance (p < 0.001) and cardiorespiratory endurance (p < 0.001). Neither BMI, WC, WHR, nor WHtR were significantly associated with flexibility. Abdominal muscle endurance, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance were significantly lower in obese participants when obesity was defined using a BMI of ≥27, 30, and 35 kg/m2. Participants with central obesity that was defined as WC ≥ 90 cm in men and 80 cm in women and WHtR ≥ 0.6 had lower abdominal muscular endurance than those without central obesity. Conclusion Body mass index is associated with abdominal muscular endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance in a reverse J-shaped manner. None of the anthropometric indices are significantly associated with flexibility. Obesity defined by BMI is linked to worse physical fitness performance and obesity defined using WHtR is linked to lower abdominal muscular endurance in Taiwanese community-dwelling adults.

Abstract
Age-related muscle decline, when associated with obesity, leads to adverse outcomes with increased risks for falling, loss of independence, disability and risk of premature mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the potential beneficial effects of flavonoids in improving the age-/high-fat-diet-induced decrease in physical activity/capacity related to the onset of skeletal muscle decline. The effects of the administration of a cocoa beverage enriched with flavanols or pure (-)-epicatechin for 5 wk in a model of physical activity decline induced by the ingestion of a high-fat diet (60% fat) in middle-age mice were evaluated. The results showed that both products, the cocoa beverage enriched with flavanols and pure (-)-epicatechin, improved physical performance evaluated with the hang-wire, inverted-screen, and weight-lifting tests and dynamometry compared with the performance of the controls. The beverage and (-)-epicatechin increased the follistatin/myostatin ratio and increased the expression of myocyte enhancer factor 2A (MEF2A), suggesting an effect on molecular modulators of growth differentiation. Furthermore, the beverage and (-)-epicatechin decreased the expression of O-type fork-head transcription factor (FOXO1A) and muscle ring finger 1 (MURF1) markers of the skeletal muscle ubiquitin-proteasome degradation pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Both sarcopenia and obesity are associated with decreased physical function of the elderly. Sarcopenic obesity (SO), which is the coexistence of sarcopenia and obesity, is expected to have a synergistic effect on physical function deterioration, but previous studies have shown varied results. This study aimed to investigate the impact of SO on the physical function of the elderly. METHODS Community-dwelling elderly subjects (1091 males; 1212 females; 70-84 years) were recruited in South Korea (eight cities). Body composition was measured via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and physical function was measured by grip strength, timed up and go test, and short physical performance battery (SPPB). RESULTS In males, grip strength and the total SPPB score in the SO group were significantly lower than those in the normal or pure obesity groups (p < 0.05). However, physical functions were not significantly different between the SO and the pure sarcopenia groups (p > 0.05). The trend for grip strength in females was similar to that in males, but the total SPPB score of the SO group was significantly lower than that of the other three groups (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis after covariate adjustment revealed that SO group males exhibited the highest risk of being in the lower SBBP score category (OR, 2.12; 95 % CI = 1.04-4.31); this trend was more prominent in females (OR, 3.75; 95 % CI = 2.01-7.00). CONCLUSION SO has a synergistic effect on physical function deterioration in the elderly compared with sarcopenia or obesity alone. Additionally, such an effect is more remarkable in females.

Abstract
AIM Relationships of low muscle mass and obesity with physical function were investigated in older adults. METHODS The participants were 1922 community dwelling persons aged 60 years or older (67.7 ± 5.2 years old, 643 men and 1279 women). One-leg standing time, knee extensor muscle strength, and maximum walking speed were assessed. Muscle mass was evaluated using the bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) method, and skeletal mass index (SMI) was determined. For the obesity index, waist circumference with a stronger association with visceral fat was used. Participants were classified into the following four groups based on standard values of waist circumference and SMI: non-obese low-SMI, obese low-SMI, non-obese normal-SMI, and obese normal-SMI. RESULTS By two-way analysis of variance (obesity × SMI), the main effects of waist circumference and muscle mass were noted in the one-leg standing time. The maximum walking speed was higher in the non-obese than the obese group, and in the normal than the low SMI group. In the muscle strength, a main effect was noted only in the muscle mass of women. An interaction was noted in men and significant differences were detected between all combinations except between the non-obese low SMI and obese low SMI groups. CONCLUSION Low muscle mass and obesity negatively influence balance and walking abilities. However, the influence of low muscle mass and obesity on muscle strength were different between the sexes. In men, the relationship between obesity and muscle strength would be different depending on whether muscle mass is retained.

Abstract
Assessment of a low skeletal muscle mass (SM) is important for diagnosis of ageing and disease-associated sarcopenia and is hindered by heterogeneous methods and terminologies that lead to differences in diagnostic criteria among studies and even among consensus definitions. The aim of this review was to analyze and summarize previously published cut-offs for SM applied in clinical and research settings and to facilitate comparison of results between studies. Multiple published reference values for discrepant parameters of SM were identified from 64 studies and the underlying methodological assumptions and limitations are compared including different concepts for normalization of SM for body size and fat mass (FM). Single computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging images and appendicular lean soft tissue by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) are taken as a valid substitute of total SM because they show a high correlation with results from whole body imaging in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. However, the random error of these methods limits the applicability of these substitutes in the assessment of individual cases and together with the systematic error limits the accurate detection of changes in SM. Adverse effects of obesity on muscle quality and function may lead to an underestimation of sarcopenia in obesity and may justify normalization of SM for FM. In conclusion, results for SM can only be compared with reference values using the same method, BIA- or DXA-device and an appropriate reference population. Limitations of proxies for total SM as well as normalization of SM for FM are important content-related issues that need to be considered in longitudinal studies, populations with obesity or older subjects.

Association between Lower Extremity Skeletal Muscle Mass and Impaired Cognitive Function in Type 2 Diabetes. Sci Rep 2020; 10:2956. Abstract
Lower extremity skeletal muscle mass (LESM) in Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has been linked to adverse clinical events, but it is not known whether it is associated with cognitive difficulties. We conducted a cross-sectional study on 1,235 people (mean age 61.4 ± 8.0 years) with T2D under primary and secondary care in Singapore. Bioelectrical impedance analyses (BIA) measures of upper extremity skeletal muscle mass (UESM), LESM and appendicular skeletal muscle index (SMI) were related to the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) measures of cognition, in multiple linear regression. In multivariable models, tertile 1 LESM (b = −2.62 (−3.92 to −1.32)) and tertile 2 LESM (b = −1.73 (−2.73 to −0.73)), referenced to tertile 3) were significantly associated with decreased RBANS total score. Significant associations of LESM with cognitive domain performances were observed for tertile 1 (b = −3.75 (−5.98 to −1.52)) and tertile 2 (b = −1.98 (−3.69 to −0.27)) with immediate memory, and for tertile 1 (b = −3.05 (−4.86 to −1.24)) and tertile 2 (b = −1.87 (−3.25 to −0.48)) with delayed memory, and for tertile 1 (b = −2.99 (−5.30 to −0.68)) with visuospatial/constructional ability. Tertile 1 SMI (b = −1.94 (−3.79 to −0.08) and tertile 2 SMI (b = −1.75 (−3.14 to −0.37)) were also associated with delayed memory. There were no associations between UESM with cognitive performance. Lower LESM may be a useful marker of possible co-occuring cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
Menopause is clinically diagnosed as a condition when a woman has not menstruated for one year. During the menopausal transition period, there is an emergence of various lipid metabolic disorders due to hormonal changes, such as decreased levels of estrogens and increased levels of circulating androgens; these may lead to the development of metabolic syndromes including cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. Dysregulation of lipid metabolism affects the body fat mass, fat-free mass, fatty acid metabolism, and various aspects of energy metabolism, such as basal metabolic ratio, adiposity, and obesity. Moreover, menopause is also associated with alterations in the levels of various lipids circulating in the blood, such as lipoproteins, apolipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins (LDLs), high-density lipoproteins (HDL) and triacylglycerol (TG). Alterations in lipid metabolism and excessive adipose tissue play a key role in the synthesis of excess fatty acids, adipocytokines, proinflammatory cytokines, and reactive oxygen species, which cause lipid peroxidation and result in the development of insulin resistance, abdominal adiposity, and dyslipidemia. This review discusses dietary recommendations and beneficial compounds, such as vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytochemicals—and their food sources—to aid the management of abnormal lipid metabolism in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated associations between anthropometric measures and physical performance in black South African adults. It was hypothesized that noninvasive, simple anthropometric measurements, such as calf circumference (CC) and body mass index (BMI), may be useful predictors of physical performance and strength. METHODS Black human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) negative men and women (aged 32-93 years) participating in the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiology (PURE) study were enrolled at baseline in 2005 = 1428). Men and women's anthropometry, socio-demographics and physical activity (PA) were assessed at baseline, 5- and 10-year follow-up. Physical performance (walk speed, chair stand and handgrip strength [HGS]) were assessed at 10-year follow-up. Linear regression models adjusted for potential confounders were used to evaluate the association between anthropometric measures and physical performance. RESULTS The combined overweight and obesity prevalence among both men (P = .02) and women (P < .001) increased significantly over 10 years, with significant increases over time in BMI and CC in the women, whereas PA decreased significantly over time in both men and women (P < .0001). BMI and CC were positively associated with HGS in the men (P = .02, P < .0001) and women (P < .0001), while CC was positively associated with walk speed in men only (P = .006) in the cross-sectional analysis of 2015 measurements. CONCLUSION BMI and CC in both men and women were positively associated with HGS, but CC was associated with walk speed in the men only. Our study suggests that CC may be a useful predictor of physical performance in black men and to a limited extent in black women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between categories of age at natural menopause (ANM) and gait speed (slowness) and grip strength (weakness), common measures of physical functioning in older women. METHODS We analyzed data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, which included participants from seven cities across Canada collected in 2012. The sample was restricted to women who reported to have entered menopause (N = 9,920). Women who had a hysterectomy before menopause were excluded since the age at which this surgical procedure was performed was not available. ANM was categorized into five groups: less than 40 (premature), 40 to 44 (early), 45 to 49, 50 to 54, and more than 54. We conducted linear regressions to assess the association between ANM and gait speed (m/s) and grip strength (kg) adjusting for participant age, education, body mass index, smoking, use of hormone therapy, height, and province of residence. RESULTS Mean ANM was 49.8 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 49.7-50.0), with 3.8% of women having a premature menopause; the average gait speed was 0.98 m/s (standard deviation: 0.22), the average grip strength was 26.6 kg (standard deviation: 6.39). Compared to women with ANM of 50 to 54, women with premature menopause had 0.054 m/s (95% CI -0.083, -0.026) lower gait speed when adjusting for age and study site. In the fully adjusted model, the association was attenuated, 0.032 m/s (95% CI -0.060, -0.004). ANM was not associated with grip strength. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that premature menopause (<40 years) may be associated with lower gait speed (slowness) among Canadian women. No association was observed between ANM and grip strength. Future studies should include a life course approach to evaluate whether social and biological pathways modify the association between age at menopause and physical function in populations from different contexts.

Abstract
Elderly population and age-related diseases are on the rise. On the contrary, aging studies are technically hard to conduct, because they require elderly animals, the maintenance of which requires ample effort and is expensive. To tackle this problem, D-galactose is used to hasten the aging process in various tissues in rodent models and it has been shown to successfully mimic the oxidative alterations that take place in the natural aging process in various tissues both by our group and others. In the present study, the validity of D-galactose aging model in skeletal muscles was tested both on predominantly slow-twitch (soleus) and rather fast-twitch (gastrocnemius) muscle in male Sprague-Dawley rats and the results are compared with young littermate controls and naturally aged rats. Redox-related modifications in soleus and gastrocnemius were assessed by measurement of protein carbonyl groups, advanced oxidation protein products, lipid hydroperoxides, total thiol, and Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase activities. In the present study, we provide biochemical evidence demonstrating that D-galactose-induced mimetic aging does result in oxidative stress-related redox alterations that are comparable with the alterations that occur in natural aging in soleus. On the contrary, in the D-galactose-induced mimetic aging of gastrocnemius, even though the oxidative stress markers were significantly increased, the endpoint redox homeostasis markers were not statistically comparable with the redox status of naturally aged group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is a common and serious health problem, especially in middle-aged women. We aimed to reveal quantile-specific associations of serum lipids [triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c)] with influencing factors in middle-aged women. METHODS A sample of 5635 participants were enrolled from Jilin, China, in 2012. Quantile regression (QR) model was performed to identify factors which influenced serum lipids in different quantiles. RESULTS The influencing factors of TG, TC, LDL-c and HDL-c were different. Waist circumference (WC), menopause, smoking, diabetes and hypertension were positively associated with TG in almost all quantiles; Menopause and age were positively associated with TC in almost all quantiles. WC, living in urban areas and alcohol consumption were positively associated with TC in low and middle quantiles, diabetes was positively associated with TC from P50 to P95. The result of LDL-c was similar to TC; BMI was negatively associated with HDL-c from P50 to P90. WC and diabetes were negatively associated with HDL-c from P5 to P90. CONCLUSION Among middle-aged women, menopause, diabetes and WC were the main factors affecting the serum lipids. Postmenopausal women would get more risk in increasing the level of serum lipids.

Abstract
The primary aim of the project was to determine the combined effect of whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS) and protein supplements on local and overall muscle/fat distribution in older man with sarcopenic obesity (SO). Community-dwelling (cdw) men ≥ 70 years with SO were randomly allocated to a WB-EMS and protein supplementation (n = 33) or a non-intervention control group (CG: n = 34). WB-EMS was conducted 1.5 sessions of 20 min/week for 16 weeks. Whey protein supplementation aimed to ensure a daily intake of 1.8 g/kg body mass. The primary study endpoint was muscle/fat distribution of the total intra-fascial volume of the mid-thigh as determined by MRI. The core secondary endpoint was appendicular muscle mass (ASMM) and trunk fat; subordinate secondary endpoint was lower-leg performance. Thigh lean muscle volume increased significantly in the WB-EMS&P (p < 0.001) and increased slightly in the CG (p = 0.435). In parallel, fat volume increased significantly in the CG (p < 0.001) and was maintained in the WB-EMS&P group (p = 0.728). Group differences for both parameters were significant (p = 0.033 and p = 0.002). ASMM and trunk fat also differed significantly (p < 0.001) between WB-EMS and CG, with significant positive changes in the WB-EMS&P (p < 0.001) and no relevant changes in the CG (p ≥ 0.458). Finally, changes of gait velocity, leg-extensor strength, and advanced lower extremity function of the WB-EMS&P group differed significantly from the CG (p ≤ 0.002). WB-EMS combined with whey protein supplements favorably affects local and overall muscle/fat distribution and lower limb functioning in cdw men 70+ with SO. Thus, this time-saving, joint-friendly, and highly customizable approach may be an option for people either unable or unmotivated to conduct intense (resistance) exercise protocols.Trial registration number NCT02857660 on http://www.clinicaltrials.gov .
