Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Depression is associated with metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the mechanisms underlying the interaction between them are still poorly known. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, mice on a choline deficiency, L-amino acid-defined, high-fat diet (CDAHFD) developing steatosis were challenged with chronic restraint stress (CRS), a protocol widely used to induce depression. The development of depression and steatosis was evaluated using histopathology analysis, ELISA, q-PCR and Western Blot. RESULTS The contribution of the activated HPA axis to hepatic steatosis progress was fully established, which was validated using a hepatocyte model. Histopathological and biochemical analysis indicated that steatosis was exacerbated by CRS challenge, and behavioral tests indicated that the mice developed depression. Among the screened endocrinal pathways, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis was significantly activated and the synergistic effect of CDAHFD and CRS in activating the HPA axis was observed. In the hypothalamus, expression of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) was increased by 86% and the protein levels of hypothalamic CRH were upregulated by 25% to 33% by CRS treatment. Plasma CRH levels were elevated by 45-56% and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels were elevated by 29-58% by CRS treatment. In the liver, target genes of the HPA axis were activated, accompanied by disruption of the lipid metabolism and progression of steatohepatitis. The lipid metabolism in the Hepa1-6 cell line treated with endogenous corticosterone (CORT) was in accordance with the aforementioned in vivo responses. CONCLUSION Depression aggravated hepatic steatosis in CDAHFD-fed mice by activating the HPA axis. The risk of NAFLD development should be fully considered in depressive patients and improvement of psychotic disorders could be an etiological treatment strategy for them.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This cross -sectional research evaluated the psychometric properties of the Self-Stigma of Depression Scale (SSDS) among Iranian people. METHODS This methodological study was conducted among 881 people in 2023, Iran. The method of proportional stratified sampling was used to select participants. To evaluate the validity, face, content, construct, convergent, and discriminant were evaluated. The reliability of SSDS was assessed with the McDonald's omega coefficient, Cronbach α coefficient, and test- retest (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient). RESULTS In confirmatory factor analysis, the factor loading of all items of SSDS was more than 0.5, and two items had low factor loading. After deleted these items, goodness of fit indexes (such as GFI = 0.945, RMSEA = 0.067, AGFI = 0.917, CFI = 0.941, RFI = 0.905) confirmed the final model with 14 items and four factors of social inadequacy (3 items), help-seeking inhibition (4 questions), self-blame (3 questions), and shame (4 questions). In the reliability phase, for all items of SSDS, Cronbach α coefficient was 0.850, the McDonald omega coefficient was 0.853, and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.903. CONCLUSION The Persian form of SSDS was approved with 14 items and four factors: social inadequacy, help-seeking inhibition, self-blame, and shame. This tool can be used to check the status of self-stigmatization of depression in different groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overlapping but divided literatures suggest certain depression facets may pose greater obesity and diabetes risk than others. Our objectives were to integrate the major depressive disorder (MDD) subtype and depressive symptom cluster literatures and to clarify which facets are associated with the greatest cardiometabolic disease risk. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of published studies examining associations of ≥2 MDD subtypes or symptom clusters with obesity or diabetes risk outcomes. We report which facets the literature is "in favor" of (i.e., having the strongest or most consistent results). RESULTS Forty-five articles were included. Of the MDD subtype-obesity risk studies, 14 were in favor of atypical MDD, and 8 showed similar or null associations across subtypes. Of the symptom cluster-obesity risk studies, 5 were in favor of the somatic cluster, 1 was in favor of other clusters, and 5 were similar or null. Of the MDD subtype-diabetes risk studies, 7 were in favor of atypical MDD, 3 were in favor of other subtypes, and 5 were similar or null. Of the symptom cluster-diabetes risk studies, 7 were in favor of the somatic cluster, and 5 were similar or null. LIMITATIONS Limitations in study design, sample selection, variable measurement, and analytic approach in these literatures apply to this review. CONCLUSIONS Atypical MDD and the somatic cluster are most consistently associated with obesity and diabetes risk. Future research is needed to establish directionality and causality. Identifying the depression facets conferring the greatest risk could improve cardiometabolic disease risk stratification and prevention programs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The risk of new onset depression associated with sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2I) use in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains unclear. This study investigated the risk of new onset depression between SGLT2I and dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor (DPP4I) users. METHODS This was a population-based cohort study of T2DM patients in Hong Kong between January 1st, 2015, and December 31st, 2019. T2DM patients over 18 with either SGLT2I or DPP4I use were included. 1:1 propensity-score matching using the nearest-neighbour method was conducted based on demographics, past comorbidities and non-DPP4I/SGLT2I medication use. Cox regression analysis models were used to identify significant predictors for new onset depression. RESULTS The study cohort included a total of 18,309 SGLT2I users and 37,269 DPP4I users (55.57% male, mean age: 63.5 ± 12.9 years) with a median follow-up duration of 5.56 (IQR: 5.23-5.8) years. After propensity score matching, SGLT2I use was associated with a lower risk of new onset depression compared to DPP4I use (HR: 0.52, 95% CI: [0.35, 0.77], P = 0.0011). These findings were confirmed by Cox multivariable analysis and sensitive analyses. CONCLUSION SGLT2I use is associated with significantly lower risk of depression compared to DPP4 use in T2DM patients using propensity score matching and Cox regression analyses.

Abstract
Traditional Chinese medicine body constitution (TCMBC) reflects a person's vulnerability to diseases. Thus, identifying body constitutions prone to depression can help prevent and treat depression. The review aimed to assess and summarize the existing evidence that explores the relationship between TCMBC and depression. Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, MEDLINE, PubMed, CNKI, Wanfang, SinoMed, Embase, VIP, CINAHL, and CMJ were searched from inception to April 2021. Observational studies assessing the association between TCMBC and depression were selected. The quality of the included studies were assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Eighteen studies were included in the systematic review and thirteen in the meta-analysis. The pooled odd ratios of developing depression for Qi-stagnation, Qi-deficiency, Yang-deficiency, Yin-deficiency, and Balanced constitutions were 3.12 (95% CI, 1.80-5.40; I2 = 94%), 2.15 (95% CI, 1.54-3.01; I2 = 89%), 1.89 (95% CI, 0.71-5.03; I2 = 81%), 1.41 (95% CI, 0.91-2.20; I2 = 57%), and 0.60 (95% CI, 0.40-0.90; I2 = 94%), respectively. The findings suggest that the evaluation of a person's TCMBC could be useful the in prevention and treatment of depression. However, more case-control and cohort studies are required to further confirm the association between TCMBC and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is strongly associated with chronic disease; yet, the direction of this relationship is poorly understood. Allostatic load (AL) provides a framework for elucidating depression-disease pathways. We aimed to investigate bidirectional, longitudinal associations of baseline depressive symptoms or AL with 5-year AL or depressive symptoms, respectively. METHODS Data were from baseline, 2-year, and 5-year visits of 620 adults (45-75 years) enrolled in the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study. The Center for Epidemiology Studies Depression (CES-D) scale (0-60) captured depressive symptoms, which were categorized at baseline as low (<8), subthreshold (8-15), or depression-likely (⩾16) symptoms. AL was calculated from 11 parameters of biological functioning, representing five physiological systems. Baseline AL scores were categorized by the number of dysregulated parameters: low (0-2), moderate (3-5), or high (⩾6) AL. Multivariable, multilevel random intercept and slope linear regression models were used to examine associations between 3-category baseline CES-D score and 5-year continuous AL score, and between baseline 3-category AL and 5-year continuous CES-D score. RESULTS Baseline subthreshold depressive symptoms [(mean (95% CI)): 4.8 (4.5-5.2)], but not depression-likely symptoms [4.5 (4.2-4.9)], was significantly associated with higher 5-year AL scores, compared to low depressive symptoms [4.3 (3.9-4.7)]. Baseline high AL [19.4 (17.6-21.2)], but not low AL [18.5 (16.5-20.6)], was significantly associated with higher 5-year CES-D score, compared to baseline moderate AL [16.9 (15.3-18.5)]. CONCLUSIONS Depressive symptoms and AL had a bi-directional relationship over time, indicating a nuanced pathway linking depression with chronic diseases among a minority population.

Abstract
Given the few studies available in the literature, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between type 2 diabetes and major depression in a large sample of apnoeic individuals. Demographic and polysomnographic data from 395 apnoeic individuals recruited from the clinical database of the Erasme Hospital Sleep Laboratory were analysed. Only individuals with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes according to the diagnostic criteria of the American Diabetes Association at admission were included in the "diabetes" group. Logistic regression analyses were used to study the association between type 2 diabetes and major depression in apnoeic individuals. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes was 19.7% in our sample of apnoeic individuals. After adjusting for major confounding factors, multivariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that unlike remitted major depression and mild major depression, only moderate to severe major depression was significantly associated with higher likelihood of type 2 diabetes in apnoeic individuals. In our study, we found that moderate to severe major depression is significantly associated with type 2 diabetes in apnoeic individuals, which seems to justify more systematic screening and adequate therapeutic management of this psychiatric disorder to allow better glycaemic control in this subpopulation at high risk of diabetic micro/macrovascular complications. Abstract
PURPOSE Psychological distresses and pre-diabetes are among the risk factors of developing type-II diabetes. The present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of omega-3 and vitamin D co-supplementation on psychological distresses in women of reproductive age with pre-diabetes and hypovitaminosis D. METHODS The present factorial clinical trial was conducted on 168 women of reproductive age with pre-diabetes and hypovitaminosis D. These participants were selected by stratified random sampling and were assigned to four groups for 8 weeks: group 1 (placebo group), group 2 (omega-3 group), group 3 (vitamin D group), and group 4 (co-supplement group). The medication and placebo doses being two 1000-mg tablets each day for omega-3 and 50,000-IU pearls every 2 weeks for vitamin D. Fasting blood glucose and vitamin D were measured at the beginning of the study. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were completed by the participants at the start and end of the intervention. RESULTS A significant difference was observed in terms of reduction in anxiety and improvement in sleep quality in the co-supplementation compared to the other three groups (p < .05). There was also a significant difference between the group receiving both supplements and the group receiving only placebos in terms of reduction in depression and stress (p < .05). CONCLUSION Vitamin D and omega-3 co-supplementation improved depression, anxiety, and sleep quality in women of reproductive age with pre-diabetes and hypovitaminosis D. Therefore, these two supplements can be recommended for improving the mental health of this group of women. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRY Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials Code: IRCT20100130003226N17. Abstract
Background As the population is ageing, the need for informal caregivers increases, and thus we need to know more about the effects on caregivers. This study aims to determine both cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between perceived limitation of informal caregiving and mental health of caregivers. Methods This population-based cohort study was based on the Swedish Psykisk hälsa, Arbete och RelaTioner (PART) study, and 9346 individuals aged 18–65 were included. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and Swedish registers. Informal care was defined as care given to a family member. Self-reported and diagnosed depression and anxiety were included as outcomes. Covariates included sex, age, social support and socio-economic position. Ordinal logistic regression and Cox regression were performed to determine the associations between caregiving and anxiety or depression. Results Self-reported depression and anxiety was only increased among those experiencing limitations (adjusted odds ratios [aOR] 2.00, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 1.63–2.47 for depression; aOR 2.07, 95% CI 1.57–2.74 for anxiety) compared to those not giving care, respectively. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) were increased for diagnosed depression (aHR 1.97, 95% CI 1.27–3.05) and for diagnosed anxiety (aHR 1.86, 95% CI 1.06–3.25) among those giving care and experiencing limitations, compared to those not giving care. No significant associations were found in caregivers without limitations. Conclusion Caregivers experiencing limitations showed a significant association with short- and long-term anxiety and depression. This study implies the importance of exploring the degree to which informal caregiving can be provided without adding burden to caregivers. Abstract
Background This study evaluated the association between psychological distress and development of type 2 diabetes (T2D) among male individuals in the workplace. Methods This observational cohort study enrolled 6,326 male participants aged 18 - 65 years (mean age 47.4 ± 9.5 years, body mass index 23.4 ± 3.4 kg/m2, hemoglobin A1c 5.5±0.3%), who received annual health checkups from April 2016 to March 2017. Those who had a hemoglobin A1c level ≥ 6.5%, previous history of diabetes, or used diabetes medication were excluded from the analysis. Psychological distress was measured using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate the development of T2D in relation to psychological distress and stress-related symptoms. The calculated hazard ratio (aHR) was adjusted for age, body mass index, and hemoglobin A1c level. Results During a mean follow-up period of 1.9 years, the incidence rate of new-onset T2D was 2.0%. Baseline psychological parameters did not differ between participants with or without new-onset T2D. Depression was associated with an increased risk of T2D (aHR = 1.54, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07 - 2.22), whereas vigor, irritation, fatigue, and anxiety were not. Moreover, inability to handle work (aHR = 2.18, 95% CI: 1.14 - 4.19), sadness (aHR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.14 - 3.26), headache (aHR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.18 - 3.34), shoulder stiffness (aHR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.10 - 2.23), and constipation/diarrhea (aHR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.04 - 2.80) were associated with T2D incidence. Conclusions Depression and stress-related symptoms were associated with an increased risk of T2D. Industrial physicians and health care providers should evaluate these factors during health checkups to lower the T2D incidence in this population
