Abstract
BACKGROUND The novel coronavirus strain SARS-CoV-2 triggered the COVID-19 pandemic with severe economic and social ramifications. As the pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the respiratory system becomes more understood, growing evidence suggests that the virus also impacts the homeostasis-regulating neuroendocrine system, potentially affecting other organ systems. SUMMARY This review explores the interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and the neuroendocrine system, highlighting the effect of this virus on various endocrine glands, including the brain, hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, pancreatic islets, gonads, and adipose tissue. The viral invasion disrupts normal hormonal pathways, leading to a range of endocrine disorders, immune dysregulation, and metabolic disturbances. KEY MESSAGES There is potential for SARS-CoV-2 to induce autoimmune responses, exacerbate existing endocrine conditions, and trigger new-onset disorders. Understanding these interactions is crucial for developing treatment strategies that address not only the respiratory symptoms of COVID-19 but also its endocrine complications. The review emphasizes the need for further research to elucidate the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 on endocrine health.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to examine the thyroid hormone profile and its association with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Methods This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients admitted to a tertiary hospital due to SARS-CoV-2 infection between February 18 and May 18, 2022. Clinical data were collected retrospectively from the electronic medical record system. Based on the thyroid function, patients were divided into five groups: normal, non-thyroid illness syndrome (NTIS), hypothyroidism, thyrotoxicosis, and unclassified. The association between thyroid function and severe COVID-19 was detected using multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic splines analysis. Results This study included 3,161 patients, with 7.7% of them developing severe COVID-19. 44.9% of the patients had normal thyroid function, 36.5% had NTIS, 6.7% had hypothyroidism, and 1.0% had thyrotoxicosis on admission. After adjusting for age, sex, and relevant clinical characteristics, NTIS and hypothyroidism were associated with increased risks of severe COVID-19 (odds ratio [OR] 2.38, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.59-3.56 and OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.23-4.26, respectively), compared to normal thyroid function group. Among patients with NTIS or hypothyroidism, higher levels of total triiodothyronine (TT3) are associated with lower risks of severe COVID-19 (OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.64-0.82, for every 0.1nmol/L increase in TT3 level). Conclusion Thyroid hormone profiles of NTIS or hypothyroidism are associated with increased risks of severe COVID-19. The decreased level of TT3 correlated with the increased risk of severe COVID-19 in patients with NTIS or hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Objective To assess the association between thyroid dysfunction and mortality among patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Design: This is a retrospective multi-center study, which examined all patients admitted with Covid-19 diagnoses, and thyroid function results in absence of known thyroid disease. Results 10,933 hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients were included in the study. These patients were without prior diagnosis or treatment of thyroid disease. Outcomes assessed were mortality, ICU admission, Ventilator use, length of stay, readmission and complications during hospital stay. Patients with low TSH and Low free T4 had odds of mortality of 10.07(95% CI [7.44-13.6]) compared to patients with Normal TSH and any free T4 levels. Patients with Low TSH and High free T4 also had odds of mortality of 1.38 (95% CI [1.19-1.59]) compared to patients with Normal TSH and Any free T4 level. Patients with Low TSH and Normal free T4 levels also had an Odds of mortality of 1.46 (95% CI [1.31-1.62]) compared to patients with Normal TSH and any free T4 level. Patients with Low TSH also had higher odds of ICU admission and Ventilator use when compared to patients with normal TSH. Conclusions This study shows that patients with low TSH, regardless of free T4 level, indicates poor prognosis for hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and offers further insights into possible prognostic value of TSH levels for severe COVID-19 outcomes.

Abstract
RATIONALE Methimazole (MMI) is the first-line agent in the treatment of hyperthyroidism. However, rare but severe cholestatic jaundice may occur. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) may provide an alternative treatment for such patients and they received thyroidectomy/radioactive iodine ablation or continued oral anti hyperthyroidism medication immediately after TPE session in the reported literatures. The case reported here is, to our knowledge, the first to describe the long interval between anti hyperthyroidism therapy and TPE in such patients. PATIENT CONCERNS A 49-year-old Chinese woman had developed worsening jaundice 3 weeks after receiving methimazole (20 mg/day) for the treatment of hyperthyroidism secondary to Graves' disease (GD). Additionally, she had a 2-year history of type 2 diabetes. DIAGNOSIS Hyperthyroidism secondary to GD, MMI-induced severe cholestatic jaundice and type 2 diabetes. INTERVENTIONS Methimazole was discontinued and the patient received 3 times of TPE, about 3-month glucocorticoid treatment, insulin administration accordingly and other conventional liver-protecting therapy. OUTCOMES Her thyroid function was stabilized with small dose of thyroxine substitution and euthyroid status persisted after thyroxine discontinuation until hyperthyroidism recurred 7 months later while her cholestatic jaundice was eventually recovered by about 3-month glucocorticoid therapy. LESSONS Due to the complex interplay between liver function and thyroid hormones, there may be unusual changes of thyroid function in GD patients with severe liver injury after TPE. By this case, we want to highlight the importance of a closely following up of thyroid function in order to deliver appropriate health suggestions for patients.

Abstract
Background: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an organ-specific disease that various drugs, including COVID-19 vaccines, can trigger. COVID-19 infection has been associated with thyroid gland damage and disease SARS-CoV-2 direct action, euthyroid sick syndrome, and immune-mediated mechanisms are all potential mechanisms of thyroid damage. It denotes thyroid gland inflammation, most commonly of viral origin, and belongs to the transitory, self-limiting thyroid gland diseases group, causing complications in approximately 15% of patients in the form of permanent hypothyroidism. Some authors say SAT is the most common thyroid disease associated with COVID-19.Purpose: The occurrence of SAT many weeks after administering the second COVID-19 vaccine is rare and has limited documentation in academic literature. This study aims to present the occurrence of SAT after administering the COVID-19 vaccine. We present the case of a 37-year-old man who developed SAT 23 days after receiving the second dose of Pfizer BioNTech's COVID-19 mRNA vaccine.Research design and study sample: Due to neck pain and an elevated body temperature (up to 38.2°C), a 37-year-old male subject presented for examination 23 days after receiving the second Pfizer BioNTech mRNA vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 viral infection. The patient denied ever having an autoimmune disease or any other disease. Painful neck palpation and a firm, slightly enlarged thyroid gland with no surrounding lymphadenopathy were identified during the exam. The heart rate was 104 beats per minute. All of the remaining physical findings were normal.Data collection and/or Analysis: Data collected during the disease are integral to the medical record.Results: Hematology and biochemistry analyses at the initial and follow-up visits revealed minor leukocytosis, normocytic anaemia, and thrombocytosis, followed by a mild increase in lactate dehydrogenase and decreased iron levels. The patient's thyroid function and morphology had recovered entirely from post-vaccine SAT.Conclusions: Results from this study emphasise the need for healthcare professionals to promptly report any case of SAT related to COVID-19 vaccination. Further investigation is warranted to understand the immunopathogenesis of COVID-19-associated thyroiditis and the impact of COVID-19 immunization on this condition.

Abstract
Background Euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS) is characterized by low serum levels of free triiodothyronine (fT3) with normal or low levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) and is reported in different acute clinical situations, such as sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis and after cardiac surgery. Our aim was to evaluate the predicting role of ESS for disease severity in patients with Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C). Methods A single-centre observational study on consecutive patients with MIS-C. Before treatment clinical, and laboratory data were collected and, in a subset of patients, thyroid function tests were repeated 4 weeks later. Variables distribution was analyzed by Mann-Whitney U-test and correlations between different parameters were calculated by Spearman's Rho coefficient. Results Forty-two patients were included and 36 (85.7%) presented ESS. fT3 values were significantly lower in patients requiring intensive care, a strong direct correlation was shown between fT3 and Hb, platelet count and ejection fraction values. A significant inverse correlation was retrieved between fT3 levels and C-reactive protein, brain natriuretic peptide, IL-2 soluble receptor and S-100 protein. Subjects with severe myocardial depression (EF < 45%) had lower fT3 values than subjects with higher EF. The thyroid function tests spontaneously normalized in all subjects who repeated measurement 4 weeks after admission. Conclusion ESS is a frequent and transient condition in acute phase of MIS-C. A severe reduction of fT3 must be considered as important prognostic factor for severe disease course, with subsequent relevant clinical impact in the management of these patients.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship of low T3 syndrome with disease severity in patients with COVID-19. Methods The clinical data of 145 patients with COVID-19 were retrospectively collected, and patients were divided into a low T3 group and a normal T3 group. Logistic regression models were used to assess predictive performance of FT3. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the use of low T3 syndrome in predicting critical disease. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to analyze the impact of low T3 syndrome on mortality. Results The prevalence of low T3 level among COVID-19 patients was 34.48%. The low T3 group was older, and had lower levels of hemoglobin, lymphocytes, prealbumin, and albumin, but higher levels of white blood cells, neutrophils, CRP, ESR, and D-dimer (all p<0.05). The low T3 group had greater prevalences of critical disease and mortality (all p <0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the Lymphocytes, free T3 (FT3), and D-dimer were independent risk factors for disease severity in patients with COVID-19. ROC analysis showed that FT3, lymphocyte count, and D-dimer, and all three parameters together provided reliable predictions of critical disease. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed the low T3 group had increased mortality (p<0.001). Six patients in the low T3 group and one patient in the normal T3 group died. All 42 patients whose T3 levels were measured after recovery had normal levels after discharge. Conclusion Patients with COVID-19 may have transient low T3 syndrome at admission, and this may be useful for predicting critical illness.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the prognostic value of serum TSH in Greek patients with COVID-19 and compare it with that of commonly used prognostic biomarkers. METHODS Retrospective study of 128 COVID-19 in patients with no history of thyroid disease. Serum TSH, albumin, CRP, ferritin, and D-dimers were measured at admission. Outcomes were classified as "favorable" (discharge from hospital) and "adverse" (intubation or in-hospital death of any cause). The prognostic performance of TSH and other indices was assessed using binary logistic regression, machine learning classifiers, and ROC curve analysis. RESULTS Patients with adverse outcomes had significantly lower TSH compared to those with favorable outcomes (0.61 versus 1.09 mIU/L, p < 0.001). Binary logistic regression with sex, age, TSH, albumin, CRP, ferritin, and D-dimers as covariates showed that only albumin (p < 0.001) and TSH (p = 0.006) were significantly predictive of the outcome. Serum TSH below the optimal cut-off value of 0.5 mIU/L was associated with an odds ratio of 4.13 (95% C.I.: 1.41-12.05) for adverse outcome. Artificial neural network analysis showed that the prognostic importance of TSH was second only to that of albumin. However, the prognostic accuracy of low TSH was limited, with an AUC of 69.5%, compared to albumin's 86.9%. A Naïve Bayes classifier based on the combination of serum albumin and TSH levels achieved high prognostic accuracy (AUC 99.2%). CONCLUSION Low serum TSH is independently associated with adverse outcome in hospitalized Greek patients with COVID-19 but its prognostic utility is limited. The integration of serum TSH into machine learning classifiers in combination with other biomarkers enables outcome prediction with high accuracy.

Abstract
Patients with long COVID suffer from many neurological manifestations that persist for 3 months following infection by SARS-CoV-2. Autonomic dysfunction (AD) or dysautonomia is one complication of long COVID that causes patients to experience fatigue, dizziness, syncope, dyspnea, orthostatic intolerance, nausea, vomiting, and heart palpitations. The pathophysiology behind AD onset post-COVID is largely unknown. As such, this review aims to highlight the potential mechanisms by which AD occurs in patients with long COVID. The first proposed mechanism includes the direct invasion of the hypothalamus or the medulla by SARS-CoV-2. Entry to these autonomic centers may occur through the neuronal or hematogenous routes. However, evidence so far indicates that neurological manifestations such as AD are caused indirectly. Another mechanism is autoimmunity whereby autoantibodies against different receptors and glycoproteins expressed on cellular membranes are produced. Additionally, persistent inflammation and hypoxia can work separately or together to promote sympathetic overactivation in a bidirectional interaction. Renin-angiotensin system imbalance can also drive AD in long COVID through the downregulation of relevant receptors and formation of autoantibodies. Understanding the pathophysiology of AD post-COVID-19 may help provide early diagnosis and better therapy for patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effects of laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection on thyroid function tests (TFTs) in pregnant women and to evaluate whether TFT changes are related to the severity and prognosis. METHODS Consecutive pregnant women tested for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR at Ankara City Hospital were recruited between January 2021 and September 2021. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4) and free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibody (anti-TPO), and thyroglobulin antibody (anti-TG) were measured on admission. RESULTS Among 747 eligible pregnant women with the same baseline characteristics, 369 RT-PCR-positive women in the patient group and 378 RT-PCR-negative women in the control group were included in the analyses. Pregnant women in the patient group had significantly lower TSH, FT4, FT3, Anti TPO, and Anti TG concentrations compared with those in the control group (p < 0.001). The proportion of patient groups with mild, moderate, severe, and critical diseases were 297 (80.4%), 40 (10.8%), 17 (4.6%), and 15 (4.2%), respectively, among which with the moderate, severe, and critical disease had significantly lower FT3 values (2.5 vs 2.19 pg/mL, p < 0.001) and higher nonthyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS) (29.2 vs. 8.4%, p < 0.001) than those with mild disease. Lower FT3 values increased the risk of ICU admission, NICU admission, and severe disease (p < 0.001). FT3 and TSH correlated positively with lymphocytes (p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with C-reactive protein (CRP) (p < 0.001, p = 0.005). CONCLUSION The SARS-CoV-2 infection seems to have an impact on the TFTs of pregnant women, and particularly FT3 level seems to be correlated with disease severity.

Abstract
A growing number of findings indicate a relationship between COVID-19 infection and thyroid dysfunction. This association is also strengthened by knowledge on the potential of viral infections to trigger thyroid disorders, although the exact underlying pathogenetic process remains to be elucidated. This review aimed to describe the available data regarding the possible role of infectious agents, and in particular of SARS-CoV-2, in the development of thyroid disorders, summarizing the proposed mechanisms and levels of evidence (epidemiological, serological or direct presence of the viruses in the thyroid gland) by which the infection could be responsible for thyroid abnormalities/diseases. Novel data on the association and mechanisms involved between SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and thyroid diseases are also discussed. While demonstrating a clear causal link is challenging, numerous clues at molecular and cellular levels and the large amount of epidemiological data suggest the existence of this relationship. Further studies should be taken to further investigate the true nature and strength of this association, to help in planning future preventive and therapeutic strategies for more personal and targeted care with attention to the underlying causes of thyroid dysfunction.

Abstract
Subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCH) is a laboratory diagnosis defined by a serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration below the reference range (< 0.4 mU/L in most assays), and a free thyroxine (FT4) and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine levels (FT3) in the reference range. Many patients diagnosed with SCH will be clinically euthyroid while others may present with manifestations characteristic of thyroid hormone excess, such as tachycardia, tremor, intolerance to heat, bone density loss, or weight loss. In addition to the laboratory abnormalities, patient factors such as age, symptoms, and underlying heart and bone disease are used to stratify patients for the risk of adverse outcomes and determine the appropriate treatment. Evaluation should include repeat thyroid function tests to document persistent TSH suppression, investigation of the underlying cause, as well as evaluation of the patient's risk of adverse outcomes in the setting of a subnormal TSH. Persistent SCH has been associated with an increased risk of a range of adverse events, including cardiovascular events such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure, bone loss and fracture, and in some studies, cognitive decline. Despite the consistent association of these adverse events with SCH, prospective studies showing improved outcomes with treatment remain limited. Management options include observation without active therapy, radioactive iodine ablation of the thyroid, antithyroid medication, thyroid surgery, or radiofrequency ablation, as appropriate for the patient and clinical setting. The choice of therapy should be guided by the underlying etiology of disease, patient factors, and the risks and benefits of each treatment option.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objectives of this study were (1) to compare TSH levels between inpatients with critical versus non-critical coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), and (2) to describe the status of TSH levels three months after hospitalization. METHODS We collected data on adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at Amiens University Hospital. We compared TSH levels between inpatients with critical (intensive care unit admission and/or death) versus non-critical COVID-19. Thereafter, survivors were invited to return for a three-month post-discharge visit where thyroid function tests were performed, regardless of the availability of TSH measurement during hospitalization. RESULTS Among 448 inpatients with COVID-19, TSH assay data during hospitalization were available for 139 patients without prior thyroid disease. Patients with critical and non-critical forms of COVID-19 did not differ significantly with regard to the median (interquartile range) TSH level (0.96 (0.68-1.71) vs. 1.27 mIU/L (0.75-1.79), p = 0.40). Abnormal TSH level was encountered in 17 patients (12.2%); most of them had subclinical thyroid disease. TSH assay data at the three-month post-discharge visit were available for 151 patients without prior thyroid disease. Only seven of them (4.6%) had abnormal TSH levels. Median TSH level at the post-discharge visit was significantly higher than median TSH level during hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that COVID-19 is associated with a transient suppression of TSH in a minority of patients regardless of the clinical form. The higher TSH levels three months after COVID-19 might suggest recovery from non-thyroidal illness syndrome.

Abstract
The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) produced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a highly contagious infectious disease. In addition to typical flu-like symptoms, COVID-19 can also cause extrapulmonary spread and systemic inflammation, potentially causing multiorgan dysfunction, including thyroid dysfunction. Thyroid function changes in patients with COVID-19 have been widely reported, but the results are inconsistent. Based on available data, SARS-CoV-2 infection can lead to changes in thyroid function, and the degree of thyroid function changes was positively correlated with the severity of COVID-19, which involved multiple potential mechanisms. In contrast, current evidence was insufficient to prove that thyroid function changes could induce the progression of COVID-19 clinical deterioration.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a current pandemic disease caused by a novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus virus respiratory type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). SARS-CoV-2 infection is linked with various neurological manifestations due to cytokine-induced disruption of the blood brain barrier (BBB), neuroinflammation, and peripheral neuronal injury, or due to direct SARS-CoV-2 neurotropism. Of note, many repurposed agents were included in different therapeutic protocols in the management of COVID-19. These agents did not produce an effective therapeutic eradication of SARS-CoV-2, and continuing searching for novel anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents is a type of challenge nowadays. Therefore, this study aimed to review the potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of citicoline in the management of COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused substantial threats to people's physical health and lives, claiming the lives of over 5 million people worldwide. It is imperative to identify the disease severity and intervene with effective therapy as early as possible. Previous studies have shown that low free triiodothyronine (FT3) may possess the predictive value on COVID-19 prognosis. METHODS In this retrospective cohort study, 15-day clinical and laboratory data of 186 hospitalized patients of COVID-19 after admission were analyzed. Groups were based on the disease severity of COVID-19, survival or non-survival, and presence or absence of euthyroid sick syndrome (ESS). Categorical variables were compared with the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Continuous variables were tested by Wilcoxon rank-sum test for the non-normal distribution. Spearman correlations were used to assess the correlations between FT3 with clinic parameters of multiple time points. RESULTS The non-survival patients had significant lower levels of FT3 (3.24 ± 0.42 vs. 4.19 ± 0.08 pmol/L, p < 0.05) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) (0.69 ± 0.19 vs. 2.32 ± 0.2 uIU/ml, p < 0.05), and the FT3 of severe patients was significantly lower than that of non-severe patients (3.67 ± 0.14 vs. 4.33 ± 0.09 pmol/L, p < 0.05). Fifty-nine cases of COVID-19 patients were diagnosed with ESS. Compared with non-ESS patients, those with ESS were older and had higher proportions of fever, shortness of breath, hypertension, diabetes, severe disease, and mortality. In addition, the correlation analysis between FT3 and clinical parameters showed that FT3 were positively related to the lymphocyte count and albumin and negatively correlated with C-reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and D-dimer at all time points in the first 15 days after admission. CONCLUSION Low FT3 had a significant predictive value on the prognosis of COVID-19 patients, and FT3 was significantly related with clinic parameters of inflammation/coagulopathy/fibrinolysis.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was characterized as a pandemic in March, 2020 by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 is a respiratory syndrome that can progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome, multiorgan dysfunction, and eventually death. Despite being considered a respiratory disease, it is known that other organs and systems can be affected in COVID-19, including the thyroid gland. Thyroid gland, as well as hypothalamus and pituitary, which regulate the functioning of most endocrine glands, express angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the main protein that functions as a receptor to which SARS-CoV-2 binds to enter host cells. In addition, thyroid gland is extremely sensitive to changes in body homeostasis and metabolism. Immune system cells are targets for thyroid hormones and T3 and T4 modulate specific immune responses, including cell-mediated immunity, natural killer cell activity, the antiviral action of interferon (IFN) and proliferation of T- and B-lymphocytes. However, studies show that patients with controlled hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism do not have a higher prevalence of COVID-19, nor do they have a worse prognosis when infected with the virus. On the other hand, retrospective observational studies, prospective studies, and case reports published in the last two years reported abnormal thyroid function related to acute SARS-CoV-2 infection or even several weeks after its resolution. Indeed, a variety of thyroid disorders have been documented in COVID-19 patients, including non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS), subacute thyroiditis and thyrotoxicosis. In addition, thyroid disease has already been reported as a consequence of the administration of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Overall, the data revealed that abnormal thyroid function may occur during and in the convalescence post-COVID condition phase. Although the cellular and molecular mechanisms are not completely understood, the evidence suggests that the "cytokine storm" is an important mediator in this context. Thus, future studies are needed to better investigate the pathophysiology of thyroid dysfunction induced by COVID-19 at both molecular and clinical levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In 2019, there was a global outbreak of new coronary pneumonia. Studies have found that the severity of patients with new coronary pneumonia may be related to their comorbidities. This article discusses the impact of thyroid disease on the severity of new coronary pneumonia through a meta-analysis and provides new treatment ideas for the later treatment and recovery of new coronary pneumonia. METHODS Databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, SINOMED, China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and thyroid diseases were searched. Reference lists of all eligible articles and related previous review articles were handsearched. Fifty-three articles were included to conduct the meta-analysis. RESULTS Fifty-three articles with 12,022 COVID-19 infection patients were included in this meta-analysis. The proportion of patients with thyroid diseases in all COVID-19 infection patients fluctuates between 0% and 88.46%. Of the 53 included studies, 22 studies reported the severity of COVID-19 infection and grouped. The fixed-effects model was used to merge odds ratio (OR) values, and the pooled effect size in favor of non-severe patients is 2.62 (95% CI = 1.96-3.49, P < 0.0001), which means that patients with severe COVID-19 infection are more likely to have thyroid diseases. The analysis subgrouped into Asia and Europe shows that patients with COVID-19 severe infection in Asia are 3.77 times more likely to have thyroid diseases than non-severe patients (fixed-effects model: OR = 3.77, 95% CI = 2.66-5.35, P < 0.00001). No significant statistical heterogeneity was found by the heterogeneity analysis (chi-square = 19.85, P = 0.34, I 2 = 9%). Severe COVID-19 infection patients are more likely to be complicated by hypothyroidism and low T3 syndrome. The pooled ORs with fixed-effects model are 3.72 (95% CI = 1.62-8.58, P = 0.002) and 5.86 (95% CI = 2.79-12.33, P < 0.00001), respectively. CONCLUSION COVID-19 infection patients with thyroid diseases are very common, and severe patients are more likely to have thyroid diseases. Asian COVID-19 infection, hypothyroidism patients, and patients with low T3 syndrome are more likely to progress to severe condition.
