Abstract
BACKGROUND This study was conducted to assess the association between lifestyle risk factors (LRF) and odds of binge eating disorder (BED) 2 years post laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) using lifestyle score (LS) and machine learning (ML) models. METHODS In the current study, 450 individuals who had undergone LSG 2 years prior to participation were enrolled. BED was assessed using BES questionnaire. The collected data for LRF included smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity (PA), fruit and vegetable intake, overweight/obesity, and percentage excess weight loss (EWL%). ML models included: logistic regression (LG), KNN, decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), SVM, XGBoost, and deep learning or artificial neurol network (ANN). Additionally, accumulative LRF was assessed using LS. RESULTS One hundred and twenty-two subjects (26.1%) met the criteria for BED 2 years after LSG. Participants who were in the highest quartile of the lifestyle score (nearly worst) had significantly three times higher odds of BED compared to the lowest quartile (nearly optimal) (p trend = 0.01). Furthermore, RF, LG, SVM, and ANN had the highest accuracy (about 75%) in predicting BED compared to other ML models (between 60 and 72%). Among the lifestyle risk factors, insufficient PA, lower vegetable consumption, a higher level of BMI, and lower EWL% were independently associated with BED (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that poor lifestyle patterns are associated with the development of BED, in contrast to non-BED individuals. Given the prevalence of this disorder among LSG participants, lifestyle risk factors must receive special attention after BS.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a highly prevalent entity defined according to cardiometabolic criteria. Other disorders related to MetS could help assess the comprehensive risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). This study aimed to update the prevalence rates of MetS and to assess its relationship with other disorders and clinical conditions other than the criteria defining MetS. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with a random population-based sample of 6588 study subjects between 18 and 102 years of age. Crude and sex- and age-adjusted prevalence rates of MetS were calculated, and their associations with comorbidities and clinical conditions other than their defining criteria were assessed by bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: The adjusted prevalence rates were 36.0% for MetS (39.8% in men; 33.5% in women), 21.5% for premorbid Mets, and 14.5% for morbid MetS. Considering only clinical conditions other than the criteria defining MetS, the independent disorders associated with premorbid MetS were hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, high levels of lipid accumulation product, high triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), high visceral adiposity index, high fatty liver index, and high waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), highlighting excess adiposity (EA). The independent disorders associated with morbid MetS were hypercholesterolaemia, high-WtHR, EA, high-TyG index, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, CKD, and albuminuria, highlighting hypertension. Conclusions: One-fifth of the adult population has premorbid MetS, and almost one-sixth has morbid MetS. Almost two-fifths of people with MetS are at moderate, high, or very high risk of CKD, and four-fifths are at high or very high cardiovascular risk. In addition to the criteria defining MetS, other cardiovascular-renal-metabolic disorders show an independent association with MetS, highlighting EA for premorbid MetS and hypertension for morbid MetS.

Abstract
The relationship between lifestyle choices and health outcomes has received significant scholarly attention. Research indicates that factors such as obesity, insufficient physical activity, tobacco use, and poor dietary habits may elevate the odds of developing metabolic disorders. This study aimed to investigate the association between the combined healthy lifestyle score (HLS) and the odds of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its associated components in a population of apparently healthy adults. This cross-sectional study utilized data from the Dena PERSIAN cohort, which comprised 2,971 healthy adults. Participants' combined HLS were evaluated using validated questionnaires that assessed body mass index (BMI), physical activity level (PAL), smoking status, and dietary quality. The evaluation of dietary nutritional quality was conducted using the most recent version of the Healthy Eating Index (HEI), known as HEI-2020. The combined HLS was measured on a scale ranging from zero, indicating an unhealthy lifestyle, to four, representing the healthiest lifestyle. Individuals with the highest combined HLS score had 81% lower odds of having MetS compared to those with the lowest score (OR: 0.19; 95% CI: 0.11-0.33). Higher combined HLS scores were significantly associated with decreased odds of abdominal adiposity (OR: 0.11; 95% CI: 0.07-0.18), abnormal glucose homeostasis (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.35-0.86), elevated serum triglycerides (OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.26-0.67), and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels (OR: 0.39; 95% CI: 0.24-0.65) after adjusting for sex, age, education level, and marital status (P < 0.05). The findings indicated a significant association between adherence to a combined HLS and a decreased odds of developing MetS and its associated components among Iranian adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The metabolic syndrome is a complex condition influenced by many factors including lifestyle. Recently, more and more studies explored the relationships between combined lifestyle factors (often measured as lifestyle scores/indices) and metabolic syndrome due to the co-occurrence of these factors. These scores/indices considered potential interactions among lifestyle factors, offering a more comprehensive understanding of their relationship with metabolic syndrome. However, no review/meta-analysis has been conducted to summarize existing evidence. Thus, this study aimed to synthesize the associations between lifestyle scores/indices and metabolic syndrome in cross-sectional and cohort studies. SUBJECTS/METHODS A literature search was performed in Embase and Medline. Multivariable-adjusted estimates were synthesized using random-effects models. In research where higher scores indicated better health, we used original estimates directly. In studies where higher scores denoted poorer health, we first calculated the coefficients and standard errors based on original estimates. Afterward, we reversed coefficients' directions and recalculated new estimates. Thus, the pooled estimates compared the healthiest with the least-healthy lifestyles (the highest vs. lowest scores/indices). Subgroup analyses were conducted based on study design, region, baseline time, baseline age, sex, health status, metabolic syndrome diagnosis, and lifestyles' number. Sensitivity analyses were performed by including only high-quality studies and employing leave-one-out analyses. RESULTS Nineteen studies from 16 publications were included. Physical activity, diet, and smoking were the top three included lifestyle factors. Compared to participants with the least-healthy lifestyles, those with the healthiest lifestyles had a 43% lower metabolic syndrome risk (95% confidence interval = 0.41-0.73). In subgroup analyses, healthy lifestyle scores/indices were inversely associated with both metabolic syndrome prevalence in cross-sectional studies (Odds ratio = 0.62; 95% confidence interval = 0.51-0.73) and metabolic syndrome incidence in cohort studies (Odds ratio = 0.40; 95% confidence interval = 0.11-0.68). The inverse association was consistent in other subgroup and sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to a healthy lifestyle pattern was beneficial to metabolic syndrome prevention.

Abstract
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is an asymptomatic, multifaceted condition often associated with various risk factors, including fatigue, obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and sleep apnea. The increasing burden of MASLD underscores the critical need for early diagnosis and effective therapies. Owing to the lack of efficient therapies for MASLD, early diagnosis is crucial. Consequently, noninvasive biomarkers and imaging techniques are essential for analyzing disease risk and play a pivotal role in the global diagnostic process. The use of extracellular vesicles has emerged as promising for early diagnosis and therapy of various liver ailments. Herein, a comprehensive summary of the current diagnostic modalities for MASLD is presented, highlighting their advantages and limitations while exploring the potential of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as innovative diagnostic and therapeutic tools for MASLD. With this aim, this review emphasizes an in-depth understanding of the origin of EVs and the pathophysiological alterations of these ectosomes and exosomes in various liver diseases. This review also explores the therapeutic potential of EVs as key components in the future management of liver disease. The dual role of EVs as biomarkers and their therapeutic utility in MASLD essentially highlights their clinical integration to improve MASLD diagnosis and treatment. While EV-based therapies are still in their early stages of development and require substantial research to increase their therapeutic value before they can be used clinically, the diagnostic application of EVs has been extensively explored. Moving forward, developing diagnostic devices leveraging EVs will be crucial in advancing MASLD diagnosis. Thus, the literature summarized provides suitable grounds for clinicians and researchers to explore EVs for devising diagnostic and treatment strategies for MASLD.

Abstract
Background The protective effect of a healthy diet against chronic diseases has been confirmed in several primary studies. This study identifies the dominant food patterns using factor analysis and determining its relationship with metabolic syndrome in female employees participating in the Persian cohort study. Methods Female participants with metabolic syndrome (based on the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP ATP III) were studied using a cross-sectional design. Demographic, clinical and anthropometric information of the subjects were analyzed after checking the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Also, dietary intake based on the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was extracted from the participants' records. Results Waist circumference and HDL were significantly correlated with the healthy food pattern (p < 0.05). In the unadjusted model, a significant relationship was observed between healthy food patterns and low HDL (p = 0.035, OR = 0.674, 95% CI for OR: 0.467-0.973). After adjusting for confounding factors, a significant relationship was observed between low HDL and the third and fourth quartiles of healthy food pattern (p < 0.001, OR = 420, 95% CI for OR: 0.257-0.684, and p < 0.001, OR = 0.294, 95% CI for OR: 0.148-0.585, respectively), indicating that being in the third and fourth quartiles of dietary health was associated with 58% and 70.6% decreased risk of low HDL, respectively. Conclusions The results indicated that only healthy dietary patterns could have a preventive role against low HDL criterion of the metabolic syndrome among women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about how physical activity (PA) and insulin resistance (IR) influence the impact of obesity on metabolic syndrome in pediatric populations. OBJECTIVES This cross-sectional observational study aimed to investigate the mediating effects of PA and IR on the relationship between waist circumference (WC) and continuous metabolic syndrome (cMetS) risk scores in children. METHODS A total of 1008 children aged 7-12 years (535 girls and 473 boys) were recruited from our local elementary schools. PA, body mass index (BMI), WC, and percent body fat were measured. cMetS risk scores were calculated by summing the standardized residuals for mean arterial pressure, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. RESULTS Mediation analysis showed a significant indirect effect of WC on cMetS scores through insulin (β= 0.270, 95 % confidence interval [CI = 0.234-0.306) and vigorous PA (β= 0.007, 95 % CI = 0.001-0.015). The direct effect of WC on cMet scores in the presence of the two mediators was significant (β= 0.193, 95 % CI = 0.040-0.066). CONCLUSION Our study findings suggest that while WC is the primary determinant of cMetS scores, fasting insulin and vigorous PA partially mediate the association between the two parameters in this study population.

Abstract
Introduction Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a growing health concern among Kuwaiti women. Dietary magnesium and fiber have been implicated in reducing the risk of MetS; however, their specific effects on this population remain underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the association of dietary magnesium and fiber intake with the prevalence of MetS and its components among women in Kuwait. Methods This study included 170 women aged 18-65 (years) recruited from AL-Adan Hospital, Mubarak Hospital, and Riqqa Polyclinic. Data were collected using a modified Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SFFQ) to assess dietary intake, and biochemical measurements were performed to evaluate serum magnesium and other metabolic markers. MetS was diagnosed according to International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Statistical analyses included Mann-Whitney U-tests, chi-square tests, Spearman correlations, logistic and linear regression models, and Cohen's kappa statistics. Results The prevalence of MetS was 24 and 18% based on the IDF and ATP III criteria, respectively. Women with MetS had significantly lower dietary magnesium and fiber intakes than those in women without MetS (p < 0.001). A strong positive correlation was found among dietary magnesium intake, fiber intake, and serum magnesium levels (r = 0.957, p < 0.001 for magnesium; r = 0.917, p < 0.001 for fiber). Increased dietary magnesium and fiber intakes were linked to reduced odds of developing MetS and its components, except for blood pressure measurements. Cohen's kappa demonstrated a strong agreement (K = 0.70, p < 0.001) between dietary and serum magnesium inadequacy. Conclusion Increased dietary intakes of magnesium and fiber are associated with reduced odds of developing MetS among Kuwaiti women. These findings support the promotion of magnesium- and fiber-rich diets as preventive strategies against MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Limited information exists linking food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels. Our aim was to examine the association between food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels in the Iranian population. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 200 students randomly selected from a university in Iran. Dietary intakes, physical activity (PA), and happiness levels of study participants were assessed using validated questionnaires. The anthropometric indices examined in this study included the body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and abdominal volume index (AVI). Multiple logistic regression models were used to examine the association between food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels. RESULTS The mean age and body mass index (BMI) of study participants were 23.5 years ± 4.52 and 23.8 kg/m2 ± 3.17, respectively. In the study population, no significant association was seen between ABSI, BRI, AVI and happiness with food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively. After adjusting for potential confounders (age, energy intake, marital status, education, smoking, physical activity, gender, and BMI), the association remained not significant for ABSI and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively (OR: 0.56, 95% CI (0.25-1.34), P = 0.193; OR: 0.59, 95% CI (0.22-1.57), P = 0.413; OR:1.19, 95%CI (0.54-2.63), P = 0.652), BRI and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively (OR:1.98, 95% CI (0.41-9.49), P = 0.381; OR: 0.57, 95%CI (0.12-2.74), P = 0.512; OR: 1.19, 95% CI (0.3-4.71), P = 0.811), AVI and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores (OR:1.15, 95% CI (0.53-2.48), P = 0.743, OR:1.01, 95% CI (0.47-2.18), P = 0.965; OR: 1.3, 95% CI (0.64-2.65), P = 0.465) and happiness and food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores respectively (OR:0.3, 95%CI (0.07-1.25), P = 0.972; OR: 0.77, 95%CI (0.18-3.19), P = 0.724, OR: 0.3, 95% CI (0.07-1.25), P = 0.083). CONCLUSIONS No significant association was detected between food habits, diet quality, and lifestyle scores with anthropometric indices and happiness levels. However, longitudinal studies are required to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common condition worldwide. Despite numerous studies on GERD, the causal relationships between blood/urine metabolites and GERD remain unclear. This study aims to explore the causal relationships between GERD and 35 blood/urine metabolites. In this study, we conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses for 35 blood/urine metabolites with GERD phenotypes from the FinnGen R10 and UKB databases separately. We then performed a meta-analysis of the inverse variance weighted results from the 2 MR analyses and applied multiple corrections to the significant P values from the meta-analysis. Finally, we conducted reverse causality validation for the corrected positive blood/urine metabolite phenotypes with GERD. After conducting MR analysis combined with meta-analysis and performing multiple corrections, we found significant positive causal associations between only 3 blood/urine metabolites and GERD, with no significant reverse associations. Among them, 2 are risk factors for the occurrence of GERD: alanine aminotransferase levels (odds ratio (OR) = 1.120, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.064-1.180, P = .0005) and urate levels (OR = 1.095, 95% CI = 1.044-1.147, P = .005). Additionally, sex hormone-binding globulin levels are protective against GERD (OR = 0.928, 95% CI = 0.896-0.961, P = .0009). Elevated levels of the metabolites alanine aminotransferase and urate are associated with an increased risk of GERD, identifying them as risk factors for the condition. In contrast, higher levels of SHBG are linked to a decreased risk of GERD, indicating that SHBG is a protective factor against the disease.

Abstract
The association between serum folate and all-cause mortality in general population remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential association between serum folate concentrations and all-cause mortality in a large, prospective, long-term U.S. cohort. Our study included adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III, and mortality data was obtained by linking with the National Death Index (NDI) until December 31, 2019. Cox proportional hazard models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to assess the association between serum folate concentrations and all-cause mortality. A total of 12,862 participants were included in this cohort study. After a median follow-up of 26.4 years [interquartile range (IQR), 15.4-28.7 years], a total of 5,299 deaths were recorded. The risk of death was lower by 12% per 1.0 g/L increase in log-transformed serum folate concentrations (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.83-0.94). Compared with the lowest quartiles of serum folate level, the risk of death was lower in the second (HR, 0.84; 95% CI, 0.72-0.97), third (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.68-0.91) and the highest quartiles (HR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.69-0.88) in multivariable-adjusted model. In subgroup analyses, the inverse association between serum folate and all-cause mortality remained statistically significant for women, men and non-Hispanic White people. Higher serum folate levels were found to be significantly associated with reduced risk of all-cause mortality. However, further studies are needed to verify these findings and explore the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
A healthy lifestyle is related to metabolic syndrome (MetS), but the mechanism is not fully understood. This study aimed to examine the association of components of MetS with lifestyle in a Chinese population and potential mediation role of serum uric acid (SUA) in the association between lifestyle behaviors and risk of components of MetS. Data were derived from a baseline survey of the Shaanxi urban cohort in the Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in northwest China. The relationship between components of MetS, healthy lifestyle score (HLS), and SUA was investigated by logistic or linear regression. A counterfactual-based mediation analysis was performed to ascertain whether and to what extent SUA mediated the total effect of HLS on components of MetS. Compared to those with 1 or less low-risk lifestyle factors, participants with 4-5 factors had 43.6% lower risk of impaired glucose tolerance (OR = 0.564; 95%CI: 0.408~0.778), 60.8% reduction in risk of high blood pressure (OR = 0.392; 95%CI: 0.321~0.478), 69.4% reduction in risk of hypertriglyceridemia (OR = 0.306; 95%CI: 0.252~0.372), and 47.3% lower risk of low levels of HDL cholesterol (OR = 0.527; 95%CI: 0.434~0.641). SUA mediated 2.95% (95%CI: 1.81~6.16%) of the total effect of HLS on impaired glucose tolerance, 14.68% (95%CI: 12.04~18.85%) on high blood pressure, 17.29% (95%CI: 15.01~20.5%) on hypertriglyceridemia, and 12.83% (95%CI: 10.22~17.48%) on low levels of HDL cholesterol. Increased HLS tends to reduce risk of components of MetS partly by decreasing the SUA level, which could be an important mechanism by which lifestyle influences MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of metabolic diseases is increasing worldwide and is influenced by multiple environmental, psychological, and dietary factors. As overseas deployment (OD) of Korean soldiers brings about changes in these factors, this study aimed to explore the impact of OD on metabolic diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS We collected paired health checkup data of Korean soldiers between January 2020 and December 2022, before and after their deployment. We analyzed changes in lipid profile, fasting glucose, and liver function biomarkers during OD and compared the prevalence of metabolic diseases before and after the OD. RESULTS A total of 2,953 soldiers were enrolled. During OD, body weight, body mass index, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and fasting glucose levels decreased significantly. Furthermore, the prevalence of obesity, impaired fasting glucose, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease decreased significantly from 45.78% to 33.49%, P < .001; 38.60% to 34.41%, P < .001; and 24.89% to 18.88%, P < .001, respectively. In a subgroup analysis of participants with long-term deployment (duration >365 days), only the prevalence of obesity decreased significantly during deployment, whereas the prevalence of hypertension and dyslipidemia increased. CONCLUSIONS Metabolic biomarkers improved, and the prevalence of metabolic diseases decreased significantly during OD. However, personnel with long-term deployment did not experience significant improvements in these parameters. Further analysis is needed to identify the factors influencing these discrepancies.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome poses a significant health concern, particularly among postmenopausal women who are vulnerable to its adverse effects. Emerging evidence suggests a potential role of vitamin D in mitigating metabolic syndrome risk factors, prompting interest in its supplementation as a therapeutic intervention. This comprehensive review examines the impact of vitamin D supplementation on metabolic syndrome variables in postmenopausal women. Through a systematic synthesis of existing literature, we assess the evidence supporting the beneficial effects of vitamin D on insulin sensitivity, lipid profiles, and inflammation markers in this population. While findings suggest potential benefits, uncertainties remain regarding optimal dosage and duration of supplementation. Implications for clinical practice underscore the importance of assessing vitamin D status and considering supplementation as part of a comprehensive approach to metabolic health management. Furthermore, public health initiatives promoting adequate vitamin D intake may help mitigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and associated complications. However, further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms, establish optimal supplementation protocols, and explore potential interactions with other nutrients or medications. Long-term randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the sustained effects of vitamin D supplementation on metabolic health outcomes in postmenopausal women.

Background The epidemiological evidence regarding nut consumption and metabolic diseases focuses on Western populations. This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between nut consumption and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. Methods A total of 112,501 adults (39,481 men and 73,020 women) aged 40-79 years were selected from baseline data of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study-Health Examinees. Nut consumption was assessed using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and categorized as non-consumers, <1 serving/week, ≥1 to <2 servings/week, or ≥2 servings/week (15 g per serving). Metabolic syndrome and its components were defined according to the Korean Society of CardioMetabolic Syndrome criteria. Associations between nut consumption and metabolic syndrome and its components were examined using multiple logistic regression with adjustments for potential confounders. Results In the study population, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 21.4% (26.9% in men and 18.4% in women), and the mean nut intake was 0.8 serving/week (0.7 serving/week in men and 0.8 serving/week in women). After adjusting for confounders, higher nut consumption was associated with a lower odds ratio (OR) of metabolic syndrome in individuals consuming ≥2 servings/week compared with non-consumers [OR = 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.80-0.91, p for trend <0.001]. Specifically, in men, this level of consumption was associated with a 14% reduction in the OR of metabolic syndrome (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.77-0.95, p for trend = 0.028). In women, a similar reduction of 14% was observed (OR = 0.86, 95% CI = 0.80-0.93, p for trend <0.001). Among the metabolic syndrome components, nut consumption was inversely associated with abdominal obesity, low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and elevated triglycerides in men and women, whereas no associations were observed for elevated blood pressure or elevated fasting blood glucose. Conclusion Our findings suggest that higher nut consumption is inversely associated with metabolic syndrome and its components in Korean adults. Further studies are needed to examine the longitudinal association between nut consumption and metabolic diseases in this population.

Abstract
Appropriate nutrients are essential for cellular function. Dietary components can alter the risk of systemic metabolic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, and obesity, and can also affect retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Dietary nutrients have been assessed for the prevention or treatment of retinal ischemic diseases and the diseases of aging. In this article, we review clinical and experimental evidence concerning the potential of some nutritional supplements to prevent or treat retinal ischemic diseases and provide further insights into the therapeutic effects of nutritional supplementation on retinopathies. We will review the roles of nutrients in preventing or protecting against retinal ischemic diseases.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is one of the most common health problems for people around the world. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adults without prior diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. We also plan to assess the influence of certain lifestyle components on prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The study involved cardiovascularly healthy patients undergoing lab tests, measurements, and the HLPCQ questionnaire (The Healthy Lifestyle and Personal Control Questionnaire). The data were used to diagnose metabolic syndrome. Out of 1044 patients from 10 primary care facilities, 23.3% met the metabolic syndrome criteria, showing a strong link with increased blood pressure, cholesterol, and fasting glucose. Lower scores in the Organized physical exercise subscale of the HLPCQ questionnaire were noted in those with metabolic syndrome. Comparing the subscale of HLPCQ questionnaire, the lower results in Organized physical exercise subscale were found among the participants with metabolic syndrome, both male and females. Metabolic syndrome, a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, should be screened for actively, even in apparently healthy populations. Results obtained in our study from analysis of HLPCQ show that screening for metabolic syndrome should be preceded by prevention based on regular physical activity and proper eating habits.

Abstract
PURPOSE Periostin, an extracellular matrix protein closely related to mechanical stress, inflammation, and ageing, has been implicated in intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) in basic research. However, it has not been examined in clinical cases. This study aimed to evaluate the association between IVDD severity and serum periostin concentration as well as to analyse potential associations between IVDD and clinical and demographic factors. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included 198 patients who underwent lumbar disc herniation and lumbar canal stenosis between January 2020 and December 2022. The severity of IVDD was evaluated using the Pfirrmann grading, whereas serum periostin levels were measured using ELISA kits. Clinical demographics, including age, sex, body mass index, comorbidities, psoas muscle index, and spinal disease, were also recorded. RESULTS This study demonstrated a significant correlation between high serum periostin levels and IVDD severity, as indicated by a high cumulative Pfirrmann score. Serum periostin levels were identified as an independent risk factor for IVDD in a multivariate regression model. Correlation analysis showed a correlation between periostin levels and Pfirrmann grade at each lumbar level (ρ = 0.458-0.550, p < 0.001) and a strong correlation with cumulative Pfirrmann score (ρ = 0.690, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The higher the serum periostin level, the higher the cumulative Pfirrmann score. Multivariate analysis showed that serum periostin was an independent risk factor for IVDD. Periostin levels may be a clinically suitable and useful biomarker for diagnosing IVDD, estimating disease progression and activity, providing prognostic information, and evaluating treatment options.

Abstract
Background Despite the rapid increase in the global prevalence of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD), there are no approved therapeutic drugs for MAFLD yet. Nutrient supplementation might mitigate the risk of MAFLD. It is more typical for individuals to consume multiple nutrients simultaneously. However, the studies exploring the combined effects of multiple nutrients on MAFLD are limited. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between both individual nutrients and their combined influence on the risk of MAFLD. Methods Data were obtained from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and 18 types of nutrients were considered in this study. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between single nutrients and the risk of MAFLD. The Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression analysis was performed to pinpoint the most relevant nutrient associated with the risk of MAFLD. Subsequently, both Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and Quantile g-computation (Qgcomp) were used to assess the combined effects of multiple nutrients on the risk of MAFLD. Results A total of 3,069 participants were included in this study. LASSO regression analysis showed that Se, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol exhibited a positive association with the risk of MAFLD. In contrast, the serum levels of Co, P, α-cryptoxanthin, LZ, and trans-β-carotene were inversely associated with the prevalence of MAFLD. When Se and two types of vitamin E were excluded, the WQS index showed a significant inverse relationship between the remaining 15 nutrients and the risk of MAFLD; α-cryptoxanthin showed the most substantial contribution. Similarly, Qgcomp suggested that the combined effects of these 15 nutrients were associated with a lower risk of MAFLD, with α-cryptoxanthin possessing the most significant negative weights. Conclusion This study suggested that the complex nutrients with either a low proportion of Se, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol or without them should be recommended for patients with MAFLD to reduce its risk.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome, as a medical condition, presents multifactorial complexity that is characterized by the resulting damage from genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors (presence or absence of physical activity, food choices). Thus, metabolic syndrome qualifies unequivocally as a medical condition in which there are, simultaneously, several independent metabolic risk factors, namely, abdominal obesity, high triglyceride level, low HDL cholesterol level, arterial hypertension, and high glycemic level. Although age, sex, socio-economic status, and the precise definition of metabolic syndrome all influence the prevalence and risk of developing the condition, clinical and epidemiological studies clearly show that central obesity, as measured by an increased abdominal circumference, is the main risk factor. Thus, due to the growing global incidence of obesity, there has been an increase in the incidence of metabolic syndrome. Starting with obesity, all other metabolic risk factors are influenced: for example, as a result of insulin resistance with hyperglycemia, diabetes is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to increased abdominal circumference. Through this review, we aimed to highlight the latest research studies and dietary nutritional interventions useful in the prevention of this disease but also implementation strategies for primary prevention among the healthy population.

Abstract
Periostin (POSTN) serves a dual role as both a matricellular protein and an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein and is widely expressed in various tissues and cells. As an ECM protein, POSTN binds to integrin receptors, transduces signals to cells, enabling cell activation. POSTN has been linked with various diseases, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and the progression of multiple cancers. Recently, its association with orthopedic diseases, such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis resulting from cartilage destruction, degenerative diseases of the intervertebral disks, and ligament degenerative diseases, has also become apparent. Furthermore, POSTN has been shown to be a valuable biomarker for understanding the pathophysiology of orthopedic diseases. In addition to serum POSTN, synovial fluid POSTN in joints has been reported to be useful as a biomarker. Risk factors for spinal degenerative diseases include aging, mechanical stress, trauma, genetic predisposition, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, but the cause of spinal degenerative diseases (SDDs) remains unclear. Studies on the pathophysiological effects of POSTN may significantly contribute toward the diagnosis and treatment of spinal degenerative diseases. Therefore, in this review, we aim to examine the mechanisms of tissue degeneration caused by mechanical and inflammatory stresses in the bones, cartilage, intervertebral disks, and ligaments, which are crucial components of the spine, with a focus on POSTN.
