Abstract
Introduction Tobacco use typically begins during adolescence. There is a lack of comprehensive evidence on the use of different tobacco products among adolescents in Africa. Aims and Methods We used the most recent Global Youth Tobacco Surveys from 53 African countries, covering 2003-2020, to estimate the overall and gender-specific prevalence of each type of tobacco product by country, Africa region, World Bank income group, and age group among adolescents aged 11-17 years. We further used Logit regressions to assess the determinants of using different tobacco products. Results The overall prevalence of any tobacco use among adolescents was 14.3 % [95 % CI: 13.5, 15.3]. Specifically, the prevalence for cigarettes was 6.4 % [95 % CI: 5.9, 7.0], for other smoked tobacco was 6.7 % [95 % CI: 6.0, 7.4], for smokeless tobacco use was 6.4 % [95 % CI: 5.9, 6.9], and for shisha smoking was 5.2 % [95 % CI: 4.4, 6.1]. The prevalence of dual use of smoked and smokeless tobacco was 3.0 % [95 % CI: 2.8, 3.2], and that of shisha and cigarettes was 1.5 % [95 % CI: 1.2, 2.0]. Any tobacco use prevalence was higher among boys (17.4 %) than girls (10.6 %). Seeing health warnings about tobacco dangers, exposure to smoking at home and school, the age restriction to tobacco purchases, and peer pressure were positively associated with the use of all tobacco products. Being a female was negatively associated with tobacco use across all products. Conclusions Policymakers should prioritize implementing large pictorial health warnings about tobacco dangers covering the entire packaging of different products.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The prevalence of smokeless tobacco consumption remains high despite policies on reduction interventions. This study aims to quantify the associations between smokeless tobacco use with cancer incidence and mortality globally. METHODS We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and PROSPERO protocol (ID: CRD42023390468). A comprehensive literature search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, covering the period from January 1, 2000, to February 28, 2023. We included peer-reviewed observational studies, specifically case-control and cohort studies, where smokeless tobacco use was the primary exposure and cancer incidence, or mortality were the main outcomes. Three independent reviewers screened titles, abstracts, and full texts, and extracted data from the included studies. Risk of bias was assessed by the same three reviewers. Any disagreements were resolved through discussion with a fourth reviewer. We performed random-effects meta-analyses and assessed heterogeneity and publication bias to ensure the robustness of our findings. RESULTS Of the 3,611 articles identified, 80 were included in the final analysis. Increased risks were observed for cancer mortality [Risk Ratio (RR) 1.38, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.22-1.56] and incidence [RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.08-1.27]. The specific cancer sites with increased mortality risk included head and neck cancers, as well as stomach cancer. For cancer incidence, associations were observed with head and neck, oral, esophageal, stomach, and pancreatic cancers. Significant heterogeneity (I2 statistic 65% to 90%) was observed among most cancer outcomes. CONCLUSION Our study found significant associations between smokeless tobacco use and cancer incidence and mortality. Targeted policy interventions, such as stricter regulations on smokeless tobacco use, are recommended to reduce its consumption and mitigate the associated cancer risks.

Abstract
Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are nicotine-containing products similar to cigarettes and are widely used in Japan. However, there has been insufficient research on nicotine dependence associated with HTP use. This study investigated the association of the types of individuals who smoked with the prevalence of nicotine dependence. We utilized data from the Japan Survey on Tobacco and Health (JASTIS). A total of 7969 participants who currently smokes was selected from the 2022 and 2023 survey respondents for the analysis. Nicotine dependence was defined as a score of 5 or higher on the Tobacco Dependence Screener (TDS). The prevalence of nicotine dependence was 43.0% (3473/8077) among all participants who smoked, 42.9% (1479/3447) among those who used cigarettes, 44.2% (760/1720) among those who used two products, and 43.0% (1206/2802) among those who used HTPs. The prevalence of nicotine dependence was statistically higher in the participants who used two products than in cigarettes (odds ratio [OR], 1.17; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.04-1.33). When classified by temperature, participants who used of two products (high-temp and low-temp) and those using participants who used HTPs (high-temp) had higher ORs for prevalent nicotine dependence (OR, 1.31 [95% CI, 1.14-1.51]) and (OR, 1.12 [95% CI, 1.00-1.25], respectively) compared to participants who used cigarettes. Additionally, the ORs for prevalent nicotine dependence increased with the number of tobacco sticks smoked per day. These results suggest that HTP use, particularly high-temperature HTPs use, and a higher number of tobacco sticks smoked is associated with nicotine dependence.

Abstract
Smokeless oral nicotine products are addictive, and their use has potential adverse effects on some but not all biomarkers of cardiovascular risk. The use of some types of these products, for instance, is associated with an increased mortality risk in those with ischemic heart or cerebrovascular disease. Similarly, smokeless tobacco has the potential to increase the risk of oral cancer, but the risks depend on the chemical composition of the product. The market of smokeless oral nicotine products has transformed since the last American Heart Association smokeless tobacco policy statement. Several varieties of tobacco-free oral nicotine products-including oral nicotine pouches; nontherapeutic nicotine gums, lozenges, and tablets; and nicotine gummies-have rapidly proliferated. The sales of oral nicotine pouches, in particular, have increased substantially; however, no data are available on their cardiovascular or health risks. In addition, synthetic (compared with tobacco-derived) nicotine has been used in some brands of oral nicotine products, but its cardiovascular and health effects have been inadequately studied. Robust public policy levers are identified to support ending addiction to all commercial tobacco products. Critical components and policy initiatives include clinicians emphasizing the prevention of tobacco product initiation and supporting cessation with established pharmacological and behavioral tobacco dependence treatment therapies as primary goals for achieving an end to commercial tobacco and nicotine addiction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The majority of users of tobacco and nicotine products start using them in adolescence. In order to keep equity considerations at the forefront of tobacco control, it is crucial to assess whether inequalities in prevalence of tobacco and nicotine use exist among adolescents globally. METHODS We conducted a secondary analysis of Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) data from 538644 school-based adolescents (79.3% aged 13-15 years) in 114 countries (2013-2019). Data were collected on current (past 30-day) use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, waterpipe tobacco and electronic cigarettes. We used weighted Poisson regression models adjusted for sex, pocket money, and age to assess differences in prevalence of current use between boys and girls, and between students with high versus low pocket money. RESULTS Although there was substantial regional variation, in most countries boys were statistically significantly more likely to report current use of all assessed products (ranging from 50.0% of countries for waterpipe tobacco to 73.3% of countries for electronic cigarettes). Inequalities by sex were less pronounced in Europe compared to other regions. Inequalities by pocket money were less consistent; students with more pocket money were more likely to report current use of cigarettes (vs those with less pocket money) in 61.8% of the countries, but more likely to report current use of smokeless tobacco in only 18.3% of countries. CONCLUSIONS Globally, boys and adolescents with more pocket money are generally more likely to use a range of tobacco and nicotine products. However, these patterns are not universal and local variations should be taken into consideration to design effective and equitable tobacco control policies.

Abstract
In our previous culture-independent study on smokeless tobacco products, we have observed a strong positive correlation between several bacteria and genes involved in nitrate/nitrite reduction, biofilm formation, and pro-inflammation. Therefore, the present investigation was carried out to analyze the inhabitant bacterial population of the Indian ST products for assessing the health-associated risk attributes using culture-dependent approach. Traditional cultivation approaches recovered several bacterial isolates from commercial ST products on different culture media. A high colony formation unit (CFU) count was observed that ranged from 173 × 104 to 630.4 × 105 per gram of ST products. Of the 74 randomly selected and distinct bacterial isolates, 17 isolates showed a significantly enhanced growth (p-value < 0.05) in the presence of the aqueous tobacco extract. On biochemical characterization, these bacteria were identified as the member of Bacillus, Enterobacter, Micrococcus, Providencia, Serratia, Pantoea, Proteus, and Pseudomonas. Most of these bacteria also exhibited biofilm-forming activity, where eight bacterial isolates were identified for strong biofilm-forming action. 16S rRNA-based molecular characterization of these bacteria identified them as Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus paralicheniformis, Enterobacter sp., Serratia marcescens, Pantoea anthophila, and Enterobacter cloacae. Moreover, these bacteria also exhibited the potential to withstand high salt and heavy metal concentrations. The findings demonstrate that Indian ST products are heavily populated with wide bacterial species exhibiting potential in biofilm formation, heavy metal resistance, and salt tolerance.

Abstract
Introduction Tobacco use is the major preventable cause of premature death worldwide, responsible for about 8 million deaths per year, mostly in low- and middle-income countries, such as Morocco. Adolescents' tobacco use is a matter of concern, because early initiation increases the risk of becoming a lifelong user. There exists a notable gap in the synthesis of evidence concerning tobacco use among Moroccan adolescents. Thus, the purpose of this study was to provide a comprehensive view of the prevalence of tobacco products' use and associated factors among adolescents in Morocco. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and ScienceDirect for relevant studies reporting prevalence rates of tobacco products' use among Moroccan adolescents, published until June 2024, using inclusion and exclusion criteria in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Additional searches were completed on other sources to reach unpublished reports. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to assess the quality of included studies. Results After the final screening, 22 papers met the inclusion criteria. Life-time prevalence of tobacco use ranged from 7.8% to 20.4% for cigarettes smoking, from 10.6% to 21.9% for waterpipe, from 7.9% to 9.1% for chewing tobacco and from 9.2% to 12.4% for snuff. The last 12-month prevalence of cigarette smoking was comprised between 6.9% and 10.8%. As for the prevalence of current use, ranges of (1.8%-16.4%) and (4.9%-8.4%) were noted for cigarettes and waterpipe, respectively. The most commonly highlighted risk factors for tobacco use included male sex, older age, having friends or family members who use tobacco and low perception of risk associated with tobacco use. Conclusion Our findings reveal an alarming situation of tobacco use among Moroccan adolescents. Therefore, it is crucial that all stakeholders engage in concerted efforts to develop and implement evidence-based preventive interventions among early adolescents.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Smokeless tobacco (SLT) stands out for its higher nicotine absorption and its role in preventable fatalities. The Global Adult Tobacco survey in Saudi Arabia revealed SLT usage, while past legislation restricted its use. Linking SLT consumption to oral cancer and oral mucosal ulcers, the study addresses its prevalence in head and neck malignancies. METHODOLOGY This study is cross-sectional and includes adult users of SLT. Raosoft (Raosoft Inc., Seattle, WA) was used to calculate the sample size. The data was analyzed using SPSS software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS The research study investigated various sociodemographic characteristics and prevalence of SLT use among participants. All participants reported using SLT, with toombak (33.2%) and shamma (36.0%) being the most prevalent. Notably, reasons for initiating SLT included influence from peer pressure (33.6%), alternatives to smoking (32.0%), and influence from relatives (19.0%). While 75.1% intended to quit within a year, awareness of SLT's harmfulness varied: 40.3% believed it was less harmful than smoking, and 57.7% recognized its link to oral cancer. Additionally, 62.2% believed SLT could lead to dependence. Sociodemographic factors generally did not significantly affect awareness of SLT causing oral cancer. CONCLUSION The findings indicate a significant prevalence of SLT use, with toombak and shamma being the most common types consumed. Awareness of the potential harm of SLT use in relation to oral cancer varied among participants, with a notable proportion misunderstanding its harmfulness compared to smoking tobacco.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although non-pharmacological smoking cessation measures have been widely used among smokers, current research evidence on the effects of smoking cessation is inconsistent and of mixed quality. Moreover, there is a lack of comprehensive evidence synthesis. This study seeks to systematically identify, describe, and evaluate the available evidence for non-pharmacological interventions in smoking populations through evidence mapping (EM), and to search for best-practice smoking cessation programs. METHODS A comprehensive search for relevant studies published from the establishment of the library to January 8, 2023, was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, CBM, Wan Fang, and VIP. Two authors independently assessed eligibility and extracted data. The PRISMA statement and AMSTAR 2 tool were used to evaluate the report quality and methodology quality of systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SRs/MAs), respectively. Bubble plots were utilized to display information, such as the study population, intervention type, evidence quality, and original study sample size. RESULTS A total of 145 SRs/MAs regarding non-pharmacological interventions for smoking cessation were investigated, with 20 types of interventions identified. The most commonly used interventions were cognitive behaviour education (n = 32, 22.07%), professional counselling (n = 20, 13.79%), and non-nicotine electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) (n = 13, 8.97%). Among them, counselling and behavioural support can improve smoking cessation rates, but the effect varies depending on the characteristics of the support provided. These findings are consistent with previous SRs/MAs. The general population (n = 108, 74.48%) was the main cohort included in the SRs/MAs. The total score of PRISMA for the quality of the reports ranged from 8 to 27, and 13 studies (8.97%) were rated as high confidence, and nine studies (6.21%) as moderate confidence, in the AMSTAR 2 confidence rating. CONCLUSIONS The abstinence effect of cognitive behaviour education and money incentive intervention has advantages, and non-nicotine e-cigarettes appear to help some smokers transition to less harmful replacement tools. However, the methodological shortcomings of SRs/MAs should be considered. Therefore, to better guide future practice in the field of non-pharmacological smoking cessation, it is essential to improve the methodological quality of SRs and carry out high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has been a noticeable trend of younger people being diagnosed with oral cancer, particularly among those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Poor knowledge on risk factors toward oral cancer and the growing fashion of using tobacco also identified among younger generation. Present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a health promotion intervention to improve the knowledge and encourage positive practices associated with oral cancer among a group of vulnerable youth in Sri Lanka. METHODS The study was a community based quasi experimental study, conducted in urban slums in the district of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Sample size for one group was 120 youth participants aged between 15 and 24 years. Health promotion intervention was implemented to the intervention group and follow up period was 6 months. The control group did not receive the intervention. Awareness of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders, tobacco chewing practice (betel quid chewing and commercially prepared tobacco and areca nut packet (CPTAP) chewing) and self-mouth examination practice were assessed at the beginning and after 6 months in both groups using an interviewer administered questionnaire. Changes in the knowledge, self-mouth examination practice, quit rate and fresh up take rate were computed to determine the effectiveness. RESULTS There was no loss to follow up. No significant difference was observed between the groups in pre intervention assessment regarding the knowledge, tobacco chewing and self-mouth examination practices. Knowledge score was significantly differed between the groups P = 0.000 in the post intervention assessment as well as among females P = 0.001. Quit rate of the tobacco chewing practice, betel chewing practice and CPTAP chewing practice among intervention group was 33%, 70%, and 13% respectively while control group did not have any quitters, P = 0.001. Fresh up take rate of tobacco chewing in the intervention group was 6.7% compared to the 37.5% in the control group, P = 0.001. Practicing self-mouth examination was significantly higher in intervention group in post intervention assessment, P = 0.000. CONCLUSION Multicomponent health promotion intervention (Advocacy, Interactive discussions, IEC materials and Community mobilization) was significantly effective in enhancing the knowledge, increasing self-mouth examination practice, and reducing tobacco chewing practice among a vulnerable group of youth in Sri Lanka.

Abstract
Changes in smoking trends and changes in lifestyle, together with worldwide data regarding the incidence of lung cancer in the group of patients with no previous history of smoking, leads to consideration of the differences in the course of the disease, the time of cancer diagnosis, the survival rate, and the occurrence of comorbidities in this group of patients. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of non-smokers among patients undergoing anatomical resection of the lung tissue due to lung carcinoma and to investigate the differences between the course of lung cancer, survival, and the comorbidities in the groups of patients with lung cancer depending on the history of tobacco smoking. The study included a cohort of 923 patients who underwent radical anatomical resection of the lung tissue with lung primary adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. The Chi2 Pearson's test, the t-test, the Mann-Whitney U test, the Kaplan-Meier method, the Log-rank test with Mantel correction, and the Cox proportional hazard model were used for data analysis. We observed a significantly higher mean age of smoking patients compared to the mean age of non-smoking patients. The coexistence of former neoplastic diseases was significantly more frequent in the group of non-smokers compared to the group of smoking patients. We did not observe differences depending on smoking status in the tumor stage, grade, vascular and pleural involvement status in the diagnostic reports. We did not observe differences in the survival between smokers vs. non-smokers, however, we revealed better survival in the non-smoker women group compared to the non-smoker men group. In conclusion, 22.11% of the patients undergoing radical anatomical resection of the lung tissue due to lung cancers were non-smokers. More research on survival depending on genetic differences and postoperative treatment between smokers and non-smokers is necessary.
