Abstract
The prevalence and incidence of young-onset type 2 diabetes is increasing globally, especially in low- and middle-income countries, and predominantly affects non-White ethnic and racial populations. Young-onset type 2 is heterogeneous in terms of the genetic and environmental contributions to its underlying pathophysiology, which poses challenges for glycemic management. Young at-risk individuals remain underrepresented in clinical trials, including diabetes prevention studies, and there is still an insufficient evidence base to inform practice for this age group. Improvements in diabetes care delivery have not reached young people who will progress to have disabling complications at an age when they are most productive. This review summarizes recent studies on the epidemiology of young-onset type 2 diabetes and its complications. We discuss the genetic and environmental risk factors that act in concert to promote glycemic dysregulation and early onset of type 2 diabetes. We provide perspectives on diabetes prevention and management, and propose strategies to address the unique medical and psychosocial issues associated with young-onset type 2 diabetes. The Precision Medicine to Redefine Insulin Secretion and Monogenic Diabetes Randomized Controlled Trial (PRISM-RCT) is the first large-scale clinical trial designed to evaluate the effect of a structured care model that integrates biogenetic markers with communication and information technology on attaining strict metabolic targets and improving clinical outcomes in individuals with young-onset type 2 diabetes. The results of this study will inform the scientific community about the impact of multifactorial intervention and precision care in young patients, for whom the legacy effect is particularly significant.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Understanding country-level nutrition intake is crucial to global nutritional policies that aim to reduce disparities and relevant disease burdens. Still, there are limited numbers of studies using clustering techniques to analyse the recent Global Dietary Database (GDD). This study aims to extend an existing multivariate time series (MTS) clustering algorithm to allow for greater customisability and provide the first cluster analysis of the GDD to explore temporal trends in country-level nutrition profiles (1990-2018). DESIGN Trends in sugar-sweetened beverage intake and nutritional deficiency were explored using the newly developed programme 'MTSclust'. Time series clustering algorithms are different from simple clustering approaches in their ability to appreciate temporal elements. SETTING Nutritional and demographical data from 176 countries were analysed from the GDD. PARTICIPANTS Population representative samples of the 176 in the GDD. RESULTS In a three-class test specific to the domain, the MTSclust programme achieved a mean accuracy of 71·5 % (adjusted Rand Index [ARI] = 0·381) while the mean accuracy of a popular algorithm, DTWclust, was 58 % (ARI = 0·224). The clustering of nutritional deficiency and sugar-sweetened beverage intake identified several common trends among countries and found that these did not change by demographics. MTS clustering demonstrated a global convergence towards a Western diet. CONCLUSION While global nutrition trends are associated with geography, demographic variables such as sex and age are less influential to the trends of certain nutrition intake. The literature could be further supplemented by applying outcome-guided methods to explore how these trends link to disease burdens.

Abstract
Transitions to sustainable food systems require shifts in food production and availability, particularly the replacement of animal-based protein with plant-based protein. To explore how this transition may relate to demographic patterns, we undertake an ecological analysis of global associations between age-specific mortality, total national macronutrient distributions, and protein substitution. Our dataset includes per capita daily food supply and demographic data for 101 countries from 1961-2018. After adjusting for time, population size, and economic factors, we find associations between low total protein supplies and higher mortality rates across all age groups. Early-life survivorship improves with higher animal-based protein and fat supplies, while later-life survival improves with increased plant-based protein and lower fat supplies. Here, we show that the optimal balance of protein and fat in national food supplies, which correlates with minimal mortality, varies with age, suggesting that reductions in dietary protein, especially from animal sources, may need to be managed with age-specific redistributions to balance health and environmental benefits.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of major noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes is rising rapidly in Asia and Africa. One of the major modifiable risk factors for these diseases is the consumption of free sugars, commonly found in sugary drinks. To address this issue, some countries have implemented food taxes such as taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages as part of national public health policies to reduce its intake. The review aims to assess the effects of national taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages within the continents of Asia and Africa. Methods Eight databases (MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, PubMed, Cochrane, SCOPUS, Web of Science and ProQuest) were searched, and seven studies were included in this review. Only studies focused on the taxation of SSBs in Asia and Africa until 30 June 2023 and those that studied the impact of national sugar taxation among their population were included. Simulation or studies evaluating the estimation effect of taxes were excluded. All eligible records were assessed for the risk of bias using the NIH Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies, and the certainty of the evidence was reviewed. Results Seven studies included in this review investigated the impact of sugar tax policies in South Africa, India, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia. The interventions in these countries were implemented from 2017 to 2018 mainly for sugar-sweetened beverages. The studies provided evidence on changes in the volume of purchase, consumption, and sugar content of taxed items. Some evidence was found to suggest the positive impact of SSB taxes in reducing consumption of taxed items which ranged from 2.5% to 19% decrease. However, no study has reported on individual health outcomes. Conclusion There is substantial evidence of a decrease in the consumption of taxed items, but there is uncertainty about the health impact of these outcomes. Future research should prioritize longitudinal studies assessing direct health impacts of SSB taxation policies. Additionally, generalizability of the results of such fiscal policies need to be investigated in lower economic settings and thus be of significance for uniform health policy reforms.Systematic Review Registration: https://www.crd.york.ac.uk/PROSPERO/view/CRD42023427030, PROSPERO (CRD42023427030).

Abstract
Optimizing fermentation media to accurately reflect the colonic environment remains a challenge in developing in vitro models that simulate the human colon. This study aimed to develop a fermentation medium, Nutritive Colonic (NutriCol), which mimics colonic chyme with fiber content reflective of a typical Western diet and compared to the widely used MacFarlane medium. MacFarlane/NutriCol media contained the following fiber (g/L): potato starch (5/0.1), pectin (2/5.6), xylan (2/4.4), arabinogalactan (2/1.8), guar gum (1/0.4), glucomannan (0/0.8), and inulin (1/0.2). The performance of NutriCol was evaluated using two in vitro models: PolyFermS, which simulates the human proximal colon, and M-ARCOL, which mimics both the lumen and mucosa of the human colon. In the PolyFermS model, findings revealed that NutriCol maintained microbiota α-diversity closer to the donor fecal samples and significantly higher than MacFarlane (Shannon's p ≤ 0.01; Simpson's p ≤ 0.001). In contrast, no significant differences in α-diversity were observed between NutriCol and MacFarlane in the M-ARCOL model, likely due to differences in model design and donor microbiome composition. Microbial community structure, assessed by Bray-Curtis distance and A Permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA), revealed significant variations between the two media in both models (PolyFermS: p = 0.02; M-ARCOL: p = 0.01). Additionally, NutriCol demonstrated a higher capacity to cultivate gut microbes, with increased ASV numbers compared to MacFarlane across PolyFermS and M-ARCOL. SCFAs production was influenced by media composition, individual microbiome structure, and the colonic model used. In the M-ARCOL, NutriCol significantly increased acetate (p = 0.0006) and butyrate (p = 0.02) levels compared to MacFarlane. While a similar trend was observed with the PolyFermS, the differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). This increase is attributed to the enrichment of SCFA-producing bacteria, such as Butyricicoccus, Lachnospira, Oscillospiraceae UCG-003, Clostridium butyricum, and Lachnospiraceae NK4A136-group. Additionally, NutriCol generated lower levels of intestinal gases (H2, O2, CO2, and CH4) than MacFarlane in the M-ARCOL model. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that NutriCol, a growth medium specifically designed to replicate the typical fiber content of a Western diet, supports gut microbiota diversity and structure better than the established MacFarlane medium. NutriCol's impact was model- and donor-dependent, enhancing microbiota diversity in PolyFermS, while promoting SCFA production and reducing gas levels in M-ARCOL.

Abstract
The rising global demand for protein, driven by population growth, urbanization, economic development, and climate change, underscores the need for sustainable alternative protein sources. Edible insects have emerged as a viable solution to enhance foodfeed and nutritional security while contributing to waste management. This study reviews 128 peer-reviewed publications to assess consumer preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for edible insects and their derivatives. Findings reveal that studies predominantly focus on Europe and insect-based foods, with limited research on insect-based feeds and derived products. Consumers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America show higher acceptance of insect-based food compared to those in Western nations, where psychological barriers such as neophobia, disgust, and limited awareness hinder adoption. WTP for insect-based foods varies, with some consumers willing to pay a premium while others expect lower prices than conventional options. Integrating edible insects into sustainable food and feed ssytems requires public education, innovative marketing, and scaling up production.

Abstract
Food allergies are increasing globally, particularly in Asia; however, the etiologies of allergic diseases remain poorly understood despite comprehensive studies conducted across a variety of populations. Epidemiological research demonstrates that food allergy is more prevalent in Westernized or urbanized societies than in rural or developing ones. As such, comparing the distribution and patterns of food allergies as well as the environmental exposures between regions may provide insight into potential causal and protective factors of food allergy. Diet is an important exposome that has been shown to modulate the immune system both directly and indirectly via pathways involving the microbiota. Changes in dietary patterns, especially the shift to a Westernized diet with reduced dietary fiber and an abundance of processed foods, impact the gut and skin epithelial barrier and contribute to the development of chronic inflammatory diseases, such as food allergy. Although dietary intervention is believed to have tremendous potential as a strategy to promote immunological health, it is essential to recognize that diet is only one of many factors that have changed in urbanized societies. Other factors, such as pollution, microplastics, the use of medications like antibiotics, and exposure to biodiversity and animals, may also play significant roles, and further research is needed to determine which exposures are most critical for the development of food allergies.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant lifestyle changes, including alterations in dietary habits and increases in sedentary behavior. The Mediterranean diet (MD) has been associated with various health benefits, which are especially important given the health challenges posed by the pandemic. During the pandemic, an overall shift towards consuming more highly processed foods has been observed. Methods This systematic review investigated adherence to MD during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on gender differences and factors influencing adherence to MD in the general public. The literature search focused on papers published between January 1, 2019, and July 8, 2024, across various databases such as Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, PubMed MEDLINE, and PsycINFO. Results Following the PRISMA guidelines, this search identified 14,347 references, of which 5,734 were duplicates. After a thorough multi-level screening process, 29 studies, encompassing 55,242 participants, met the inclusion criteria. While seven studies reported that men adhered to a MD more than women during the COVID-19 pandemic, 12 studies also indicated that women had higher adherence to a MD compared to men. Nine studies, however, found no significant gender differences in MD adherence. Additionally, older age, higher education levels, higher socioeconomic status, and increased physical activity were linked to greater adherence to a MD in the pandemic context. Conclusion Gender-specific differences in dietary behavior are influenced by factors such as socioeconomic status, gender roles, and pandemic phases as well as biases in sample composition and methodological weaknesses. Significant gaps in the evidence, particularly concerning sexual and gender minorities, are highlighted. Abstract
BACKGROUND A new vitamin concept, termed vitamin A5, an umbrella term for vitamin A derivatives being direct nutritional precursors for 9-cis-13,14-dihydroretinoic acid and further induction of RXR-signaling, was recently identified with global importance for mental health and healthy brain and nerve functions. Dietary recommendations in the range of 1.1 (0.5-1.8) mg vitamin A5 / day were suggested by an international expert consortium. The ensuing question arises as to the current daily dietary intake amounts in Western civilization. METHODS Addressing this answer included calculating the intake based on known amounts of vitamin A5 in frequently consumed food items of the human diet that are high in this vitamin, as well as the known daily dietary intake amounts of those selected food components in Westernized countries. RESULTS Regarding food items, amounts of vitamin A5 in the form of provitamin A5 (i.e., 9-cis-beta-carotene (9CBC)), the predominant form in the diet, were found to range from 0.1 to 39 µg 9CBC / g for individual fruits and vegetables, with the highest concentrations being in leafy vegetables. The average intake amounts of vitamin A5 in adults of the general population following a Western lifestyle in Europe averaged 0.9, with a range from 0.5 (for Austria) to 1.3 (for Italy) mg 9CBC/day. Furthermore, based on our calculations, large parts, i.e., approximately two-thirds, of the population are low, even too low (<1.1 mg/day), in daily vitamin A5 intake. CONCLUSION In addition to the importance of nudging the population toward a regrettably non-well-accepted higher intake of fruits and vegetables, an additional fortification and supplementation of vitamin A5 could be considered, similar to other micronutrients that are low in a Westernized diet.

Abstract
Background Although Spain has traditionally followed the Mediterranean diet, in recent years, changes have become noticeable in the food preferences of the population. These changes include adopting new diets and dietary trends, such as plant-based diets, intermittent fasting and raw food diets. These choices are influenced by cultural, social and socio-demographic factors, and their impact on health should be studied in detail. Aim The objectives of this research are: (1) to study the prevalence of different dietary patterns among the Spanish population, (2) to explore the dependence of dietary choice on socio-demographic factors, (3) to investigate the relationship between the social habits and lifestyle choices of the population and how it affects health. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out on the Spanish population. Using a questionnaire constructed and validated by the research team, socio-demographic data were collected and different nutritional, social and lifestyle habits of the targeted population were explored. Results A valid sample of 22,181 people was collected among which 17,573 (79.2%) people claimed to follow a Mediterranean dietary pattern, 1,425 (6.4%) people followed a plant-based diet, 365 (1.6%) people are vegans, 1,018 people (4.6%) practiced intermittent fasting, 252 (1.1%) people followed a raw food diet and 1,548 people (7%) claimed to follow other types of diets. The data show that younger people (18-25 years old) tend to adopt more often a plant-based diet than older people and that women tend to follow this type of diet more often than men. On the other hand, men seem to practice intermittent fasting more frequently. A higher tendency to practice a raw food diet was found among people living in villages than those living in cities. Moreover, some trends were found in different regions of Spain, with greater adherence to a plant-based diet in Catalonia, while intermittent fasting is more common in the Region of Murcia. Finally, the results indicate that individuals who pay attention to their diet and experiment with various dietary patterns are generally more health-conscious. This is reflected in their adoption of healthier behaviors, such as exercising more and reducing their intake of alcohol and sugary drinks.

Abstract
The global burden of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been rising over the last decades. IBD is an intestinal disorder with a complex and largely unknown etiology. The disease is characterized by a chronically inflamed gastrointestinal tract, with intermittent phases of exacerbation and remission. This compromised intestinal barrier can contribute to, enhance, or even enable the toxicity of drugs, food-borne chemicals and particulate matter. This review discusses whether the rising prevalence of IBD in our society warrants the consideration of IBD patients as a specific population group in toxicological safety assessment. Various in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro models are discussed that can simulate hallmarks of IBD and may be used to study the effects of prevalent intestinal inflammation on the hazards of these various toxicants. In conclusion, risk assessments based on healthy individuals may not sufficiently cover IBD patient safety and it is suggested to consider this susceptible subgroup of the population in future toxicological assessments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Maternal nutritional status is a "key" contributor to Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). However, the role of maternal dietary patterns (DPs) during pregnancy remains poorly understood. Thus, we conducted a systematic review to assess associations between "a posteriori-derived" DPs and GDM. METHODS A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Scopus for cohort, cross-sectional, and case-control studies published until June 2024. A total of twenty-eight studies involving 39,735 pregnant women were included, and their quality was evaluated by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The 91 identified DPs were classified into four categories: "Westernized", "Nutritious", "Plant-based", and "Miscellaneous". RESULTS Our findings do not reveal definitive associations between maternal DPs during pregnancy and GDM risk. Notably, "Westernized" DPs tended to be associated with an increased risk. However, a very small portion of patterns within this category exhibited protective associations. Conversely, "Nutritious" and "Plant-based" appear beneficial for GDM prevention in specific populations. The "Miscellaneous" category presented an almost equal distribution of DPs with both detrimental and protective associations, pinpointing the absence of a clear directional trend regarding GDM risk. CONCLUSIONS The heterogeneity in findings can be attributed to geographic and sociocultural variations and methodological differences across studies. Thus, there is a need for more standardized research methodologies to provide more precise insights that will ultimately help develop effective and tailored dietary guidelines for GDM prevention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association among sun exposure time, vitamin D intake, dietary patterns, and socioeconomic status in Portuguese children. METHODS Participants aged 3-11 years (50.1% females) were recruited from public and private schools (n = 118) in the districts of Coimbra (n = 2980), Lisbon (n = 3066), and Porto (n = 2426). Parents reported their children's daily sun exposure time during the summer season and reported children's food consumption, including vitamin D food sources, using standardized questionnaires. Parents' education level was used as a proxy measure to the socioeconomic status (SES). The principal component factor analysis (PCA) method was used to identify dietary patterns. The eight dietary patterns identified were labeled in: "fast food", "rich in vitamin D", "sugary drinks", "vitamin D", "candies", "supplements", "rich in calcium" and "vegetables/healthy". Linear regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between sun exposure time and dietary patterns according to SES. RESULTS A total of 4755 children were included. Children from high SES had significantly longer sun exposure time (p < .001) and more frequently consumed vitamin D supplements (p < .001). "Fast food" pattern showed a negative association with sun exposure time in medium and high SES (p = .014 and p < .001, respectively). CONCLUSION Children with lower SES spend less time exposed to the sun, consume fewer dietary sources of vitamin D, and consume more foods rich in fat and sugar.

Abstract
Humans and their associated microorganisms coexist in complex symbiotic relationships. Continuously advancing research is demonstrating the crucial role of host-associated microbiota in the pathophysiology and etiology of disease and in mediating the prevention thereof. As an exemplar, the gut microbiota, especially colonic bacteria, have been extensively studied in colorectal cancer (CRC), and the growing body of evidence establishes new oncomicrobes and their oncometabolites associated with the initiation and promotion of carcinogenesis. Herein, we discuss the importance of approaching the gut microbiome as an ecosystem rather than an assortment of individual factors, especially in the context of cancer prevention. Furthermore, we argue that a dietary pattern effectively drives multiple nodes of the gut microbial ecosystem toward disease- or health-promoting qualities. In the modern circumstances of excessive consumption of ultraprocessed and animal-based foods and concomitant escalation of chronic disease burden worldwide, we focus on whole food-derived dietary fiber as a key to establishing a health-promoting eubiosis in the gut.

Abstract
Recent studies have provided compelling evidence to suggest that various environmental factors play a significant role in the development of food allergies. As our society experiences rapid economic growth, increased urbanization, and a shift towards a more Westernized diet, the incidence of food allergies is also on the rise and the pattern is gradually evolving. This review will delve into the changes in the epidemiology of food allergies within the Asia-Pacific region and the various dietary practices and factors that are postulated to play a role in the rise in food allergies over the years. Although there have been important advancements in the field of food allergies, there are still numerous uncertainties regarding the intricate relationship between diet and food allergies. Specifically, the role of epigenetic factors in influencing the susceptibility to food allergies, as evidenced by studies that assessed the impact of migration and rural-urban dynamics, is not fully understood. Addressing this knowledge gap presents an opportunity to develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies that could greatly benefit individuals living with food allergies.

Abstract
Background The relationship between the intake of dietary fatty acids (FA) and bone mineral density (BMD) has been the subject of prior investigations. However, the outcomes of these studies remain contentious. The objective of this research is to examine the link between dietary FA consumption among adolescents and BMD. Methods This study utilized high-quality data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database, spanning 2011 to 2018, to explore the association between dietary fatty acids and bone health indicators in adolescents, including BMD and bone mineral content (BMC). Analyses were performed using weighted multivariate linear regression models, incorporating detailed subgroup analysis. Results The study included 3440 participants. Analysis demonstrated that intake of saturated fatty acids (SFA) was positively correlated with total BMD, left arm BMD, total BMC, and left arm BMC. Monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) intake was positively correlated with BMC across most body parts, though it showed no correlation with BMD. Intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) was significantly inversely correlated with both BMD and BMC in most body parts. Additionally, subgroup analysis indicated that variables such as sex, age, standing height, and race significantly influenced the correlation between FA intake and BMD. Conclusions Our study indicates that dietary intake of SFA may benefit to BMD in adolescents, in contrast to PUFA and MUFA. Therefore, we recommend that adolescents maintain a balanced intake of SFA to promote optimal bone mass development while preserving metabolic health.

BACKGROUND Incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased globally in recent decades. We examined early-onset CRC incidence trends worldwide for potential cohort effects, defined as changes associated with time of birth (eg, early-life exposure to carcinogens), and period effects, defined as changes associated with calendar periods (eg, screening programs). METHODS We obtained long-term incidence data for early-onset CRC diagnosed in patients aged 20 to 49 years through the year 2012 for 35 countries in the Cancer Incidence in Five Continents database. We used a smoothing method to help compare cohort and period trends of early-onset CRC and used an age-period-cohort model to estimate cohort and period effects. RESULTS Cohort effects had a more dominant role than period effects in the early-onset CRC incidence in Shanghai (China), the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, and Osaka (Japan). The smoothed trends show the specific birth cohorts when early-onset CRC began to increase: the 1940s-1950s birth cohorts in the United States; the 1950s-1960s birth cohorts in other Western countries; the 1960s birth cohorts in Osaka; and the 1970s-1980s birth cohorts in Shanghai. Such increases occurred earlier for early-onset cancers of the rectum than of the colon. For the other countries, the results were less clear. CONCLUSIONS Recent birth cohorts may have been exposed to risk factors different from earlier cohorts, contributing to increased early-onset CRC incidence in several developed countries or regions in the West and Asia. Such increases began in earlier birth cohorts in Western countries than in developed regions of Asia.

INTRODUCTION We aimed to investigate mid-life food insecurity over time in relation to subsequent memory function and rate of decline in Agincourt, rural South Africa. METHODS Data from the longitudinal Agincourt Health and Socio-Demographic Surveillance System (Agincourt HDSS) were linked to the population-representative Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study of an INDEPTH Community in South Africa (HAALSI). Food insecurity (yes vs. no) and food insecurity intensity (never/rarely/sometimes vs. often/very often) in the past month were assessed every 3 years from 2004 to 2013 in Agincourt HDSS. Cumulative exposure to each food insecurity measure was operationalized as 0, 1, and ≥2 time points. Episodic memory was assessed from 2014/15 to 2021/22 in HAALSI. Mixed-effects linear regression models were fitted to investigate the associations of each food insecurity measure with memory function and rate of decline over time. RESULTS A total of 3,186 participants (mean age [SD] in 2004: 53 [12.87]; range: 30-96) were included and 1,173 (36%) participants experienced food insecurity in 2004, while this figure decreased to 490 (15%) in 2007, 489 (15%) in 2010, and 150 (5%) in 2013. Experiencing food insecurity at one time point (vs. never) from 2004 to 2013 was associated with lower baseline memory function (β = -0.095; 95% CI: -0.159 to -0.032) in 2014/15 but not rate of memory decline. Higher intensity of food insecurity at ≥2 time points (vs. never) was associated with lower baseline memory function (β = -0.154, 95% CI: -0.338 to 0.028), although the estimate was imprecise. Other frequencies of food insecurity and food insecurity intensity were not associated with memory function or decline in the fully adjusted models. CONCLUSION In this setting, mid-life food insecurity may be a risk factor for lower later-life memory function, but not decline. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) gives people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) a new perspective of life, although some develop changes in impaired body composition. This study aimed to assess the factors associated with changes in body composition in PLWHA using ART, depending food consumption. MATERIAL AND METHODS It was a cross-sectional study and took place through interviews with patients treated at an University Hospital. Secondary data: CD4+ T cells, ART time and age. The level of physical activity and smoking were self-reported. For the assessment of body composition, electrical bioimpedance and measurements of weight, height and waist circumference were used. RESULTS The highest percentages of fat mass and fat-free mass, in treatment for more than 5 years, were in the female group (p <0.01), aged> 50 years (p = 0.02) and in the male group (p <0.01), young adult (p <0.01), respectively. The final linear regression model for both free fat mass and fat mass had sex, age, smoking and nutritional diagnosis as relevant factors. The frequency of food consumption was inadequate for calories, carbohydrates, proteins and lipids was high, however it did not significantly influence body composition. CONCLUSIONS Gender, age, smoking and nutritional diagnosis by BMI significantly influence body composition.

Abstract
Social jetlag (SJL) and, more recently, eating jetlag have been linked with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Here we aim to investigate lifestyle factors (diet, eating behavior, smoking, perceived stress, time spent sedentary/day) and social determinants (education level, employment status, and place of residence) associated with SJL corrected for sleep duration (SJLsc) and eating jetlag. Self-declared data on age, gender, lifestyle, and eating behavior were collected online from March 2021 to February 2022 of 432 adults. Principal component analysis was used to extract three dietary patterns (Prudent, Western, and Risky). Prevalence of SJLsc was 35.2%, with no significant difference between men and women (p = 0.558). Adults with SJLsc had significantly larger eating jetlag (56.0 min vs 41.2 min, p = 0.001). Increasing SJLsc duration was associated with an increased adherence to a Risky dietary pattern (standardized β coefficient = .165, p = 0.012); increasing eating jetlag duration was associated with an increased adherence to a Western dietary pattern (standardized β coefficient = .127, p = 0.039) and a shorter sleep duration (standardized βcoefficient = -0.147, p = 0.011). Among social determinants analyzed, only being a student or employed was associated with eating jetlag (standardized β coefficient = 0.125, p = 0.044), while none displayed any relationship with SJLsc. Our survey provides evidence on a risky behavior among young persons with SJLsc and eating jetlag, characterized by a higher alcohol consumption, and a diet rich in processed meat and high-fat food, eating during nights, and shorter sleep duration with potential long-term negative health outcomes.

Abstract
Chinese population suffers severe health risk from dietary methylmercury (MeHg) exposure. However, the temporal change of such risk and socioeconomic driving factors remain unknown. This study investigates this issue by compiling time-series inventory of China's MeHg-related health risk at the provincial scale and revealing critical socioeconomic influencing factors through structural decomposition analysis. Results show that the per-fetus IQ decrements from dietary MeHg exposure have declined by 60% nationally during 2004-2019. Such decline results from the joint effects of dietary shifts (contributing 44%) and the decrease of MeHg concentrations in foods consumed (contributing 56%). However, the declining trend has slowed down since 2014 and even leveled off after 2016, which is mainly affected by dietary pattern changes. Especially, the increased intake level and proportion of fishes in underdeveloped provinces of China have dominated the slowdown of declining trend after 2016. Moreover, the affluence and education levels have significantly negative associations with per-fetus IQ decrements. Rich and well-educated people have higher ability of risk perception, which indicates the importance of rational consumption patterns. Our findings can help develop socioeconomic regulatory policies on reducing per-fetus IQ decrements from dietary MeHg exposure in China.

Abstract
Breast milk leptin plays a potential role in preventing childhood obesity. However, the associations of breast milk leptin with maternal metabolism in pregnancy and dietary patterns during lactation are still unclear. We aimed to explore associations of breast milk leptin with maternal metabolic profiles in pregnancy and dietary patterns during lactation. A total of 332 participants were recruited for this retrospective cohort study. Breast milk samples were collected at approximately 6 weeks postpartum. Breast milk leptin and twenty-three metabolic profiles in pregnancy were measured in this study. A semi-quantitative FFQ was used to gather dietary information during lactation. Both principal component analysis and the diet balance index were used to derive dietary patterns. Among twenty-three maternal metabolic profiles, maternal serum glucose (β = 1·61, P = 0·009), γ-glutamyl transferase (β = 0·32, P = 0·047) and albumin (β = -2·96, P = 0·044) in pregnancy were correlated with breast milk leptin. All dietary patterns were associated with breast milk leptin. Given the joint effects of maternal metabolism in pregnancy and dietary patterns during lactation, only diet quality distance was significantly associated with leptin concentrations in breast milk (low level v. almost no diet problem: β = -0·46, P = 0·011; moderate/high level v. almost no diet problem: β = -0·43, P = 0·035). In conclusion, both maternal metabolism in pregnancy and dietary patterns during lactation were associated with breast milk leptin. Maternal diet balance during lactation was helpful to improve breast milk leptin concentration.

SCOPE Diabetes is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), which in turn is the most common and serious complication of diabetes. This study analyzes dietary patterns and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 543 diabetes patients with new-onset cardiovascular events and 461 diabetic patients without. METHODS AND RESULTS SNPs are determined and analyzed using real time PCR and gene chip method. Factor analysis and logistic regression are used to determine dietary patterns and evaluate the level of associations and interaction effects, respectively. The legumes and edible fungi pattern and vegetable pattern show a significant negative correlation with complication risk. ADIPOQ rs37563 and legumes and edible fungi pattern have a significant interactive effect on disease, and patients with a high score of C polymorphism genotype (GC + CC) have a lower risk of disease. 5-10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) rs1801131 and vegetable pattern have a borderline interaction effect on disease, and those patients with TT genotype have a lower risk of disease. CONCLUSION These findings provide new insights into the role of the interactive protection of dietary patterns and SNPs. And participants with specific alleles show a lower risk of cardiovascular complications.

Abstract
Hypertension is one of the primary risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It is a condition that affects people worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing due to several factors, such as lack of physical activity, population aging, and unhealthy diets. Notably, this increase has primarily occurred in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Latin America, approximately 40% of adults have been diagnosed with hypertension. Moreover, reports have shown that the Latin American genetic composition is highly diverse, and this genetic background can influence various biological processes, including disease predisposition and treatment effectiveness. Research has shown that Western dietary patterns, which include increased consumption of red meat, refined grains, sugar, and ultra-processed food, have spread across the globe, including Latin America, due to globalization processes. Furthermore, a higher than recommended sodium consumption, which has been associated with hypertension, has been identified across different regions, including Asia, Europe, America, Oceania, and Africa. In conclusion, hypertension is a multifactorial disease involving environmental and genetic factors. In Latin America, hypertension prevalence is increasing due to various factors, including age, the adoption of a "Westernized" diet, and potential genetic predisposition factors involving the ACE gene. Furthermore, identifying the genetic and molecular mechanisms of the disease, its association with diet, and how they interact is essential for the development of personalized treatments to increase its efficacy and reduce side effects.

Abstract
Introduction Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is considered as a complex, intertwined multiple risk factors that directly increase the risk of various metabolic diseases, especially cardiovascular atherosclerotic diseases and diabetes mellitus type 2. While lifestyle changes, including dietary intervention are effective in mitigating or preventing MetS, there are no specific therapies against MetS. Typical western diets comprise of high saturated fatty acid, cholesterol, and simple sugar; consequently their consumption may increase the potential pathological developmental risk of MetS. Partial replacement of dietary fatty acids with polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) is widely recommended measure to manage MetS-related disorders. Methods In the present study, we used rat model to investigate the role of n-3 PUFA enriched beef tallows (BT) on MetS and tunicamycin (TM)-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, by partially replacing dietary fat (lard) with equal amounts of two different BTs; regular BT or n-3 PUFA-enriched BT. The experimental rats were randomly assigned to three different dietary groups (n = 16 per group): (1) high-fat and high-cholesterol diet (HFCD); (2) HFCD partially replaced with regular BT (HFCD + BT1); (3) HFCD partially replaced with n-3 enhanced BT (w/w) (HFCD + BT2). After 10 weeks of dietary intervention, each experimental rodent was intraperitoneally injected with either phosphate-buffered saline or 1 mg/kg body weight of TM. Results HFCD + BT2 showed improved dyslipidemia before TM injection, and increased serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels after TM injection. BT replacement groups had significantly reduced hepatic triglyceride (TG) levels, and decreased total cholesterol (TC) and TG levels in epididymal adipose tissue (EAT). Furthermore, BT replacement remarkably attenuated TM-induced unfolded protein responses (UPRs) in liver, showing reduced ER stress, with BT2 being more effective in the EAT. Discussion Therefore, our findings suggest that partially replacing dietary fats with n-3 PUFA to lower the ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFAs is beneficial in preventing pathological features of MetS by alleviating HFCD- and/or TM-induced dyslipidemia and ER stress.

Abstract
Genetic modification of crops has substantially focused on improving traits for desirable outcomes. It has resulted in the development of crops with enhanced yields, quality, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. With the advent of introducing favorable traits into crops, biotechnology has created a path for the involvement of genetically modified (GM) crops into sustainable food production systems. Although these plants heralded a new era of crop production, their widespread adoption faces diverse challenges due to concerns about the environment, human health, and moral issues. Mitigating these concerns with scientific investigations is vital. Hence, the purpose of the present review is to discuss the deployment of GM crops and their effects on sustainable food production systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the cultivation of GM crops and the issues preventing their widespread adoption, with appropriate strategies to overcome them. This review also presents recent tools for genome editing, with a special focus on the CRISPR/Cas9 platform. An outline of the role of crops developed through CRSIPR/Cas9 in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) by 2030 is discussed in detail. Some perspectives on the approval of GM crops are also laid out for the new age of sustainability. The advancement in molecular tools through plant genome editing addresses many of the GM crop issues and facilitates their development without incorporating transgenic modifications. It will allow for a higher acceptance rate of GM crops in sustainable agriculture with rapid approval for commercialization. The current genetic modification of crops forecasts to increase productivity and prosperity in sustainable agricultural practices. The right use of GM crops has the potential to offer more benefit than harm, with its ability to alleviate food crises around the world.
