Abstract
Various forms of oral involvement have been reported in patients with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1). Here, we analyze register-based associations between NF1 and hospital visits related to oral infections. The Finnish NF1 cohort encompasses all individuals with verified NF1 who have visited the Finnish central and university hospitals in 1987-2011. The Finnish Care Register for Health Care allowed the follow-up of 1349 individuals with NF1, their 1894 siblings without NF1, and 13,870 matched controls for diagnoses related to oral infections in 1998-2014. We observed clearly increased hazards for hospital visits associated with dental caries (ICD-10 K02; NF1 vs. controls, hazard ratio [HR] 4.42, 95% CI 3.23-6.04), diseases of pulp and periapical tissues (K04; HR 3.85, 95% CI 2.68-5.54), and gingivitis and periodontal diseases (K05; HR 3.63, 95% CI 2.37-5.56). In contrast, hospital visits related to diseases of salivary glands (K11), and stomatitis and related lesions (K12) did not show significantly increased hazard in NF1 compared with the controls or the non-NF1 siblings. In conclusion, the findings suggest that hospital visits related to oral infections are relatively common among individuals with NF1. The results highlight the need for early detection, proactive prevention, and timely treatment of oral infections in individuals with NF1.

Abstract
Abnormal widening of the mandibular canal (MC) is rarely observed on radiography. Nonetheless, as most of the current research on abnormal mandibular widening is limited to case reports and MCs have relatively deep and hidden positions, there are challenges in diagnosing and formulating treatment plans for patients with abnormal MC widening. To provide ideas for the differential diagnosis and treatment choices of the characteristic clinical sign, this study included patients with abnormal widening of the MC between July 2014 and October 2023. The patient's medical records were reviewed, general information, disease details and radiographic features (panoramic reconstructive computed tomography) of MC widening were collected. Patients were followed up to assess treatment outcomes. In conclusion, the abnormal widening of the MC often implies a pathological state of the mandible. And different morphologies of the widened MC are helpful for differential diagnosis of protential mandibular disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is frequently performed on patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), to detect and follow-up intracranial findings. In addition, NF1-related pathologies can appear in the jaws. This case study investigates if it is advantageous to assess the depicted parts of the jaws in the imaging of NF1 patients with intracranial findings, thereby detecting jaw pathologies in their initial stages. CASE PRESENTATION We report on the 3-year management with clinical and radiological follow-ups of a central giant cell granuloma and a neurofibroma in the mandible of a patient with NF1 who underwent examinations with brain MRIs. A review of the mandible in the patient's MRIs disclosed lesions with clear differences in progression rates. CONCLUSION NF1-related jaw pathologies may be detected in the early stages if the depicted parts of the jaws are included in the assessment of the imaging of NF1 patients with intracranial findings. This could impact the treatment of eventual pathologies before lesion progression and further damage to the vicinity.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is a multisymptomatic disorder with highly variable presentations, which include short stature, susceptibility to formation of the characteristic benign tumors known as neurofibromas, intense freckling and skin discoloration, and cognitive deficits, which characterize most children with the condition. Attention deficits and Autism Spectrum manifestations augment the compromised learning presented by most patients, leading to behavioral problems and school failure, while fragmented sleep contributes to chronic fatigue and poor quality of life. Neurofibromin (Nf1) is present ubiquitously during human development and postnatally in most neuronal, oligodendrocyte, and Schwann cells. Evidence largely from animal models including Drosophila suggests that the symptomatic variability may reflect distinct cell-type-specific functions of the protein, which emerge upon its loss, or mutations affecting the different functional domains of the protein. This review summarizes the contributions of Drosophila in modeling multiple NF1 manifestations, addressing hypotheses regarding the cell-type-specific functions of the protein and exploring the molecular pathways affected upon loss of the highly conserved fly homolog dNf1. Collectively, work in this model not only has efficiently and expediently modelled multiple aspects of the condition and increased understanding of its behavioral manifestations, but also has led to pharmaceutical strategies towards their amelioration.

Abstract
Background Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant inherited tumor predisposition disease with a highly variable phenotype. The influence of the characteristic NF1 tumors (neurofibromas) on dentition has not yet been examined in detail. The aim of the study was to assess the dentition of NF1 children and adolescents, considering the symmetry of tooth development. Material and Methods The panoramic radiographs of 59 patients with a confirmed NF1 diagnosis were compared with 59 age-and-sex-matched controls. The stages of tooth development on the sides of the jaw, added to a score, were assessed. In addition, the number of filled or decayed teeth, and the number of retained or missing teeth were assessed. Results The tooth development of both study groups is symmetrical for almost all parameters and in the same developmental stage according to the sum score of the tooth development stages. Discrete developmental delays of teeth, in particular in the oral area of facial plexiform neurofibroma (PNF) are noticeable. NF1 patients' teeth showed less decay and more restorations than that of the control group. The facial PNF (FPNF) does not impair emergence of deciduous teeth. Conclusions Development of dentition of NF1 patients does not differ from the general population. However, FPNF with oral tumor components often prevent mesial movement of permanent molars and premolars, so these teeth do not develop contact (spacing), hardly emerge or may stay retained in bone. Oral PNF may have a low-retarding effect on some tooth root development (e.g., wisdom teeth). This effect is negligible when comparing the affected and unaffected sides of the jaw and is probably non-specific. Abstract
The survival rate for pediatric cancer has increased over the past few decades, short- and long-term complications have been detected and studied, and oral complications have emerged as an important topic of research. Here, we aimed to highlight the importance of oral manifestations that may only become apparent years or even decades after cancer treatment. This systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis. We searched articles using PubMed via the MEDLINE, Web of Science, and LILACS databases until October 2023. Overall, 35 observational studies were included, and the results estimated a pooled prevalence of the following dental anomalies: discoloration, 53%; crown-root malformations and agenesis, 36%; enamel hypoplasia, 32%; root development alterations, 29%; unerupted teeth, 24%; microdontia, 16%; hypodontia, 13%; and macrodontia, 7%. Most childhood cancer survivors have at least one dental sequela. Childhood cancer survivors presented a higher risk of having dental alterations than control counterparts. Additional analyses reveal possible sex-based differences that should be explored in future studies. These results collectively highlight the importance of oral healthcare and the prevention of disease in childhood cancer survivors.

Abstract
Introduction Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an is an autosomal dominant heritable tumor predisposition syndrome.. Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) are a hallmark of NF1. Plexiform neurofibromas (PNF) are neoplasms that are characteristic of NF1, often causing disfiguring effects (e.g., on the face), and are considered precancerous lesions. Previous studies have shown that facial PNF (FPNF) have an impact on the shape of facial bones. This study examines deviations of mandibular symmetry from cephalometric reference planes considering the topography of FPNF. Material and methods The posterior-anterior (PA) cephalograms of 168 patients with NF1 were examined. We compared three groups: patients with FPNF (n=74), with disseminated cutaneous neurofibroma (DNF (n=94)), and control subjects without NF1 (n=23). The PNF group was subtyped with respect to facial PNST type and location. Typical mandibular cephalometric reference points were determined (condyle, antegonion, and menton). Results The skeletal measurement points of the mandible in FPNF patients often differ significantly from those of the DNF group. It has been proven that typical asymmetries of the median-sagittal measurement points are indicators of PNF. Differences within the trigeminal tumor spread patterns are indicated in the measured values. A local tumor effect (PNF) on the relation of the measurement points to the reference planes is made plausible by the study results. The investigations prove that tumor type (FPNF) and the number of FPNF affected branches of the trigeminal nerve may correlate with significant deviations of mandible from symmetry on PA projections. Conclusion The presented study shows that characteristic patterns of mandibular deformity can be measured on standardized radiographs in NF1 patients with FPNF. Mandibular deformities imaged on standardized radiographs may be initial indicators of a previously unrecognized NF1. Tumor-associated alterations of the mandible should be considered in the classification systems of pathognomonic, diagnostically pioneering osseous findings in NF1. The radiological findings provide clues for planning mandibular osteotomies in NF1 patients, especially for assessing facial regions typically highly vascularized by tumor spread. Furthermore, the radiological findings are an indication of a tumor potentially invading and destroying adjacent masticatory and mimic muscle, findings that may have an influence on surgical measures (function, aesthetics, and wound healing).

Abstract
Up to 40% of rare disorders (RD) present facial dysmorphologies, and visual assessment is commonly used for clinical diagnosis. Quantitative approaches are more objective, but mostly rely on European descent populations, disregarding diverse population ancestry. Here, we assessed the facial phenotypes of Down (DS), Morquio (MS), Noonan (NS) and Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) syndromes in a Latino-American population, recording the coordinates of 18 landmarks in 2D images from 79 controls and 51 patients. We quantified facial differences using Euclidean Distance Matrix Analysis, and assessed the diagnostic accuracy of Face2Gene, an automatic deep-learning algorithm. Individuals diagnosed with DS and MS presented severe phenotypes, with 58.2% and 65.4% of significantly different facial traits. The phenotype was milder in NS (47.7%) and non-significant in NF1 (11.4%). Each syndrome presented a characteristic dysmorphology pattern, supporting the diagnostic potential of facial biomarkers. However, population-specific traits were detected in the Colombian population. Diagnostic accuracy was 100% in DS, moderate in NS (66.7%) but lower in comparison to a European population (100%), and below 10% in MS and NF1. Moreover, admixed individuals showed lower facial gestalt similarities. Our results underscore that incorporating populations with Amerindian, African and European ancestry is crucial to improve diagnostic methods of rare disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Neurofibromas (NF) are the most common benign nerve sheath tumors in the tongue, gingiva, major salivary glands, and jaw bones. Nowadays, tissue engineering is a revolutionary technique for reconstructing tissues. To explore the feasibility of using stem cells derived from NF teeth to treat orofacial bone defects, the differences in cell biological properties between an NF teeth group and Normal teeth group. PATIENTS AND METHODS The intra-dental pulp tissues from each tooth were extracted. The cell survival rates, morphology, proliferation rates, cell activity, and differentiation abilities were contrastively analyzed between the NF teeth group and Normal teeth group. RESULTS Between the two groups, there were no differences in the primary generation (P0) cells (p>0.05), the cell yield, and the time required for the cells to grow out of the pulp tissue and attach to the culture plate. Furthermore, no differences were found at the first generation (passage) between the two groups in colony formation rate and cell survival rate. The proliferation capacity, cell growth curve, and surface marker expression of dental pulp cells was not altered in the third generation (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Dental pulp stem cells from NF teeth were successfully obtained and were not different from normal dental pulp stem cells. Although, clinical research using tissue-engineered bone to repair bone defects is still in its infancy, it will eventually enter the clinic and become a routine means of bone defect reconstruction treatment as related disciplines and technologies develop.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most craniofacial manifestations of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) are considered as a result of tumor compression. We sought to determine salivary changes, caries, and periodontal complications in NF1 patients without tumors in the oral cavity. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS Eleven NF1 patients without tumors in the oral cavity and 29 matched controls without NF1 were enrolled in this case-control study. Demographic information, medical history, and data of intraoral examinations, including the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) scores and Russel's periodontal index (PI), were recorded. The functional salivary analysis was performed for sialometry, salivary pH values, and amylase activity. Ingenuity Systems Pathway Analysis (IPA) was conducted to identify mutually activated pathways for NF1-associated oral complications. RESULTS NF1 patients were associated with periodontitis (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.06-1.73, P = 0.04), gingivitis (OR = 1.55, 95% CI = 1.09-2.01, P = 0.0002), and decreased salivary flow rates (OR = 1.40, 95% CI = 1.05-1.76, P = 0.005). Periodontal destruction, salivary changes, and dental caries in NF1 patients were age-dependent. Subgroup analyses based on age stratification suggested that salivary flow rates and salivary amylase activities were significantly low in NF1 patients aged over 20 years and that salivary pH values, PI and DMFT scores were significantly high among NF1- controls aged over 20. All oral complications were not significantly presented in NF1 patients aged below 20 years. IPA analyses suggested that cellular mechanisms underlying NF1-associated oral complications involved chronic inflammatory pathways and fibrosis signaling pathway. CONCLUSION NF1 patients without tumors in the oral cavity presented a comparatively high prevalence of age-dependent oral complications, including periodontal destruction and salivary gland dysfunction, which were associated with chronic inflammatory pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the mandibular condyles of neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) individuals without facial plexiform neurofibroma using cone beam computed tomography images. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eighty cone beam computed tomography scans (160 mandibular condyles) were analyzed: 40 from NF1 individuals (study group) and 40 from individuals without NF1 (control group). The anteroposterior and mediolateral dimensions, height, and volume of the mandibular condyles were measured. The mandibular condyles were classified according to their morphology: healthy (absence of morphological changes), with flattening (loss of rounded contour of at least one of the surfaces), with erosion (loss of continuity of the cortical bone), with osteophyte (exophytic formation of the condyle surface), and with sclerosis (any increase in the cortical thickness in the load-bearing areas). Furthermore, the position of the mandibular condyles in relation to the joint fossa in an anteroposterior view was classified as anterior, concentric, or posterior. RESULTS The study group had a higher anteroposterior dimension of the mandibular condyles compared with the control group (p < 0.05). There were no differences in condylar morphology and position between both groups (p > 0.05). The morphological alterations were not associated with sex or age in any group evaluated (p > 0.05). For both groups, the concentric position was the most common. For the study group, there was a significant difference in the condylar position between the sides (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS NF1 individuals without facial plexiform neurofibroma present a high prevalence of condyles with a large anteroposterior dimension and asymmetric position in the joint fossa. However, no morphological and volumetric changes were observed in the mandibular condyles of them. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The knowledge of the TMJ alterations in individuals with NF1 is important to establish an evaluation protocol, which would allow early intervention if indicated.

Abstract
Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway dysregulation results in a group of disorders, collectively termed as RASopathies. Neurofibromatosis type 1, Noonan syndrome, Noonan syndrome with multiple lentigines, Noonan syndrome/loose anagen hair, Legius syndrome, Costello syndrome, cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome and capillary malformation-arteriovenous malformation are the well-recognized RASopathies. These are characterized by multi-organ tumours and hamartomas. Some other features in common are facial dysmorphism, skeletal abnormalities, congenital heart disease, neurocognitive abnormalities and risk of various solid-organ and haematological malignancies. Some of the RASopathies are heterogeneous, caused by several gene mutations resulting in variations in phenotypes and severity ranging from mild to fatal. Significant phenotypic overlaps among different disorders, often makes it difficult to pinpoint a clinical diagnosis. Specific cutaneous manifestations are present in some of the RASopathies and are often the earliest clinical signs/symptoms. Hence, dermatologists contribute significantly as primary care physicians by identifying disorder-specific cutaneous lesions. However, diagnostic work-up and management of these disorders are often multidisciplinary. Confirmation of diagnosis is possible only by genetic mapping in each case. Genetic counseling of the patients and the affected families is an important component of the management. The aim of this review is description of cutaneous manifestations of RASopathies in the background of multi-system involvement to enable dermatologists a comprehensive and logical approach to work up and diagnose such patients in the absence of facility for specific molecular testing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To report speech outcomes following Orticochea pharyngoplasty in 43 patients with cleft palate and noncleft velopharyngeal dysfunction. DESIGN A retrospective surgical audit of patients undergoing Orticochea pharyngoplasty between 2004 and 2012, with speech as a primary outcome measure. SETTING Patients known to a regional UK cleft center. METHODS Forty-three patients underwent Orticochea pharyngoplasty by a single surgeon in a UK regional cleft center. Twenty-one patients had undergone a prior procedure for velopharyngeal dysfunction. Pre- and postoperative speech samples were assessed blindly using the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech-Augmented by a specialist cleft speech and language therapist, external to the team. Speech samples were rated on the following parameters: hypernasality, hyponasality, audible nasal emission, nasal, turbulence, and passive cleft speech characteristics. Statistical differences in pre- and postoperative speech scores were tested using the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test. Inter- and intrareliability scores were calculated using weighted Cohen κ. RESULTS Whole group: A statistically significant difference in pre- and postoperative scores for hypernasality (P < .001), hyponasality (P < .05), nasal emission (P < .01), and passive cleft speech characteristics (P < .01) were reported. Patients with cleft diagnoses: A statistically significant difference in scores for hypernasality (P < .001), nasal emission (P < .01), and passive cleft speech characteristics (P < .01) were reported for this group of patients. Patients with noncleft diagnoses: The only parameter to demonstrate a statistically significant difference was hypernasality (P < .01) in this group. CONCLUSIONS Orticochea pharyngoplasty is a successful surgical procedure in treating velopharyngeal dysfunction in both the cleft and noncleft populations.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Neurofibromatosis is a disease that causes various abnormalities such as neurofibroma, mainly in the skin and nerves. The common sites in the oral cavity are the palate, gingiva, tongue, buccal mucosa, and lips but, occurrence in the mandible is rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE A 26-year-old woman was referred to our clinic because of percussion pain. Radiographic findings showed a radiolucent area. The patient was clinically diagnosed with a radicular cyst by a previous doctor. Multiple café-au-lait spots were found disseminated on her body, and she had already been prenatally diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). We performed a biopsy and suggested a neurofibroma. Tumor extirpation was performed under general anesthesia. The histopathological diagnosis showed a neurofibroma. CLINICAL DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION NF1 is a systemic nevus that causes abnormalities in melanocytes and Schwann cells, and various lesions appear, but intramandibular lesions are extremely rare. Diagnosis of NF1 and radicular cysts in the mandible is difficult due to their image resemblance. However, it should be kept in mind if the underlying disease is NF1. In our case, it was easy to detach and may have originated from small peripheral nerve endings in the mandible.

Abstract
Simple Summary Central nervous system involvement (CNS) is a common finding in Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Beside tumor-related manifestations, NF1 is also characterized by a wide spectrum of CNS alterations with variable impacts on functioning and life quality. Here, we propose an overview of non-oncological neuroradiological findings in NF1, with an insight on pathophysiological and embryological clues for a better understanding of the development of these specific alterations. Abstract Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), the most frequent phakomatosis and one of the most common inherited tumor predisposition syndromes, is characterized by several manifestations that pervasively involve central and peripheral nervous system structures. The disorder is due to mutations in the NF1 gene, which encodes for the ubiquitous tumor suppressor protein neurofibromin; neurofibromin is highly expressed in neural crest derived tissues, where it plays a crucial role in regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and structural organization. This review article aims to provide an overview on NF1 non-neoplastic manifestations of neuroradiological interest, involving both the central nervous system and spine. We also briefly review the most recent MRI functional findings in NF1.

Abstract
Introduction Neurofibromin, a protein encoded by the NF1 gene, is mutated in neurofibromatosis 1, one of the most common genetic diseases. Oral manifestations are common and a high prevalence of hyposalivation was recently described in individuals with neurofibromatosis 1. Although neurofibromin is ubiquitously expressed, its expression levels vary depending on the tissue type and developmental stage of the organism. The role of neurofibromin in the development, morphology, and physiology of salivary glands is unknown and a detailed expression of neurofibromin in human normal salivary glands has never been investigated. Aim To investigate the expression levels and distribution of neurofibromin in acinar and ductal cells of major and minor salivary glands of adult individuals without NF1. Material and method Ten samples of morphologically normal major and minor salivary glands (three samples of each gland: parotid, submandibular and minor salivary; and one sample of sublingual gland) from individuals without neurofibromatosis 1 were selected to assess neurofibromin expression through immunohistochemistry. Immunoquantification was performed by a digital method. Results Neurofibromin was expressed in the cytoplasm of both serous and mucous acinar cells, as well as in ducts from all the samples of salivary glands. Staining intensity varied from mild to strong depending on the type of salivary gland and region (acini or ducts). Ducts had higher neurofibromin expression than acinar cells (p = 0.003). There was no statistical association between the expression of neurofibromin and the type of the salivary gland, considering acini (p = 0.09) or ducts (p = 0.50) of the four salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, minor salivary, and sublingual gland). Similar results were obtained comparing the acini (p = 0.35) and ducts (p = 0.50) of minor and major salivary glands. Besides, there was no correlation between the expression of neurofibromin and age (p = 0.08), and sex (p = 0.79) of the individuals, considering simultaneously the neurofibromin levels of acini and duct (n = 34). Conclusion Neurofibromin is expressed in the cytoplasm of serous and mucous acinar cells, and ductal cells of salivary glands, suggesting that this protein is important for salivary gland function.

Abstract
Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common genetic disease whose dermatological lesions are at the forefront of its development. Cutaneous manifestations include café au lait spots, intertriginous freckling, and neurofibromas which appear during childhood and adolescence and are part of the clinical criteria to diagnose NF1. However, it is only recently that oral manifestations have been highlighted in many studies as frequently associated to NF1. This article aims to review oral and cutaneous manifestations related to NF1 and to report a case of a 51-year-old male with skin and oral neurofibromas related to NF1. Our patient presented with lesions on the gingiva, a rare localization that takes a hypertrophic form mimicking other various pathological conditions. Although not frequent, malignant transformation in NF1, especially regarding plexiform neurofibromas, is well established. Patients with NF1 therefore have regular follow-ups based on clinical examination, as sarcomatous transformation brings an extremely poor prognosis, recurrences and distant metastasis being common.

Abstract
The neurofibromatoses [NF 1, NF 2 and schwannomatosis] are a group of genetic disorders that lead to the development of nervous system tumours and have diverse dermatologic, neurologic, ophthalmic, skeletal and vascular effects. The most common is NF 1 (Neurofibromatosis 1) also known as von Recklinghausen's disease, which is one of the most common human genetic diseases. Oral manifestations of NF 1 are reported in 72% of cases and in one of our cases precipitated attendance at a general dental practitioner (GDP), subsequent diagnosis and genetic screening for family members. This disease may go undiagnosed due to its variable expressivity of symptoms. The pivotal importance of a GDP in the discovery and early referral to an oral or oral and maxillofacial surgeon for further investigation and diagnosis of this condition is highlighted. Knowledge of the most common features of neurofibromatosis can facilitate the speedy referral and subsequent diagnosis of generalized neurofibromatosis, local surgical management of benign neoplasms and long term management of its other clinical features. Dentists should be aware of the classic symptoms of this condition and of their role in long-term care in view of the risk of local recurrence and malignant transformation.

Abstract
Osseous manifestations of neurofibromatosis 1 (NF-1) occur in a minority of the affected subjects but may be because of significant clinical impairment. Typically, they involve the long bones, commonly the tibia and the fibula, the vertebrae, and the sphenoid wing. The pathogenesis of NF-1 focal osseous lesions and its possible relationships with other osseous NF-1 anomalies leading to short stature are still unknown, though it is likely that they depend on a common mechanism acting in a specific subgroup of NF-1 patients. Indeed, NF-1 gene product, neurofibromin, is expressed in all the cells that participate to bone growth: osteoblasts, osteoclasts, chondrocytes, fibroblasts, and vascular endothelial cells. Absent or low content of neurofibromin may be responsible for the osseous manifestations associated to NF-1. Among the focal NF-1 osseous anomalies, the agenesis of the sphenoid wing is of a particular interest to the neurosurgeon because of its progressive course that can be counteracted only by a surgical intervention. The sphenoid wing agenesis is regarded as a dysplasia, which is a primary bone pathology. However, its clinical progression is related to a variety of causes, commonly the development of an intraorbital plexiform neurofibroma or the extracranial protrusion of temporal lobe parenchyma and its coverings. Thus, the cranial bone defect resulting by the primary bone dysplasia is progressively accentuated by the orbit remodeling caused by the necessity of accommodating the mass effect exerted by the growing tumor or the progression of the herniated intracranial content. The aim of this paper is to review the neurosurgical and craniofacial surgical modalities to prevent the further progression of the disease by "reconstructing" the normal relationship of the orbit and the skull.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim was to evaluate overall quality of life (QOL) and investigate impact factors in Chinese neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patients, particularly in those with craniofacial plexiform neurofibromas (pNFs). METHODS The Impact of NF1 on quality of life (INF1-QOL) Questionnaire were completed from a department of plastic and reconstructive surgery by 27 patients. Patients were 3 to 49 years of age. The correlation between subdomains were calculated using Pearson correlation. The difference between groups were evaluated using Fisher exact t-test. P value <0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS In age group of craniofacial pNFs, significant difference presented in cosmetic appearance, role and outlook on life and general QOL. Higher impact on general QOL in adults (6/8) than children (1/7) pointed to more impaired QOL in adults, as well as 2 subdomains including appearance, role and outlook on life. The patients who have more than 50 cutaneous neurofibromas (cNFs) (6/7) presented a significantly greater negative impact on the role and outlook of life. No statistically significant difference of QOL were detected between craniofacial and non-craniofacial pNFs patients. CONCLUSIONS Age and cNFs were 2 main factors that have a negative impact on QOL in craniofacial pNFs patients. Adults reported lower QOL in cosmetic appearance, the role and outlook of life and general QOL. Patients with more than 50 cNFs reported more negative impact on the role and outlook of life. A multidiscipline management for these patients is required, including psychosocial intervention.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to summarize literature data on oral and maxillofacial manifestations of neurofibromatosis I (NFI) and to analyze clinical case in with dentist had the leading role in proper diagnosis of the disease. Literature review showed main oral alterations in NFI to be: neurofibroma formation seen in 8-14% of children and adolescents, dysplastic «orthodontic» phenotype with shortened mandible, maxilla and sphenoid bones; radiologic signs including alveolar nerve canal and mental foramen widening in almost one third of patients; lesions of cranial nerves (mainly trigeminal, facial and glossopharyngeal), with non-specific paralysis clinic. These symptoms, however, develop gradually throughout the life and may be evident only in late adolescents. The most pathagnomic sigh is café-au-lait spots as they present in 95% of children at birth. The described clinical case demonstrates the difficulties in diagnostic of NFI in children in the absence of mutilating plexiform neurofibromas. The disease provoked significant functional disorders in maxillofacial area which resulted not only in lower quality of life but also mimicked iatrogenic complications of routine dental treatment.
