Abstract
BACKGROUND Burnout is a pervasive issue in the nursing profession, with detrimental consequences for nurses' well-being, patient care, and healthcare systems. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool for delivering immersive and engaging interventions to manage stress and reduce burnout. This systematic review aims to synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of VR interventions for stress and burnout in nursing, characterize the specific intervention approaches, and guide future research and practice. METHODS We will search for published and unpublished studies in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, MEDLINE, The Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Scopus from database inception to the present. Randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental studies, and pre-post studies examining VR interventions for stress and/or burnout in licensed nurses will be included. Two reviewers will independently screen studies, extract data, and assess risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool for randomized trials and the ROBINS-I tool for non-randomized studies. If appropriate, meta-analysis will be performed to estimate pooled effects on stress and burnout outcomes. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses will explore the influence of intervention characteristics and study quality. Narrative synthesis will be conducted if quantitative synthesis is not possible. The review protocol follows the PRISMA-P guidelines and is registered in PROSPERO. DISCUSSION This systematic review will provide a comprehensive synthesis of the evidence on VR interventions for stress and burnout management in nurses. By critically appraising the research and identifying the most promising approaches, the review will guide the development and implementation of evidence-based VR programs to support nurses' well-being and address the urgent problem of burnout. The findings will also identify gaps in the literature and directions for future research to optimize the design and delivery of VR interventions for this high-need population. Abstract
BACKGROUND Virtual reality (VR) is helpful for the management of stress and anxiety. However, current interventions have limitations related to location (ie, therapist's office or hospitals) and content (ie, virtual experiences only for relaxation). OBJECTIVE This randomized pilot trial aims to investigate the efficacy and acceptability of a brief remote VR-based training for supporting stress and anxiety management in a sample of Italian health care workers. METHODS A total of 29 doctors and nurses (n=21; 72% female; mean age 35.6, SD 10.3 years) were recruited and randomized to a VR intervention group or a control group in a passive control condition. Participants assigned to the VR intervention group received remote VR-based training consisting of 3 sessions at home delivered in 1 week using the VR psychoeducational experience "MIND-VR" and the 360° relaxing video "The Secret Garden." The primary outcome measures were stress, anxiety, depression, and the knowledge of stress and anxiety assessed at baseline and posttreatment. We also evaluated the immediate effect of the remote VR-based training sessions on the perceived state of anxiety and negative and positive emotions. The secondary outcome measure was the usability at home of the VR system and content. RESULTS The VR intervention significantly reduced stress levels as assessed by the Perceived Stress Scale (6.46, 95% CI 2.77 to 10.5; P=.046) and increased the knowledge of stress and anxiety, as evaluated by the ad hoc questionnaire adopted (-2.09, 95% CI -3.86 to -0.529; P=.046). However, the home-based VR training did not yield similar reductions in stress, anxiety, and depression levels as assessed by the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items or in trait anxiety as evaluated through the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y-1. After the home training sessions with VR, there was a significant decrease in anxiety, anger, and sadness and an increase in happiness levels. Analyses of the questionnaires on usability indicated that the health care workers found using the VR system at home easy and without adverse effects related to cybersickness. Of 33 participants, 29 (88%) adhered to the protocol. CONCLUSIONS The results of this randomized pilot study suggest that a week-long home VR intervention, created with content created specifically for this purpose and available free of charge, can help individuals manage stress and anxiety, encouraging further research investigating the potential of remote VR interventions to support mental health. Abstract
The current COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost every aspect of life but its impact on the healthcare landscape is conspicuously adverse. However, digital technologies played a significant contribution in coping with the challenges spawned by this pandemic. In this list of applied digital technologies, the role of immersive technologies in battling COVID-19 is notice-worthy. Immersive technologies consisting of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR), extended reality (XR), metaverse, gamification, etc. have shown enormous market growth within the healthcare system, particularly with the emergence of pandemics. These technologies supplemented interactivity, immersive experience, 3D modeling, touching sensory elements, simulation, and feedback mechanisms to tackle the COVID-19 disease in healthcare systems. Keeping in view the applicability and significance of immersive technological advancement, the major aim of this study is to identify and highlight the role of immersive technologies concerning handling COVID-19 in the healthcare setup. The contribution of immersive technologies in the healthcare domain for the different purposes such as medical education, medical training, proctoring, online surgeries, stress management, social distancing, physical fitness, drug manufacturing and designing, and cognitive rehabilitation is highlighted. A comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the collected studies has been performed to understand the current research work and future research directions. A state-of-the-artwork is presented to identify and discuss the various issues involving the adoption of immersive technologies in the healthcare area. Furthermore, the solutions to these emerging challenges and issues have been provided based on an extensive literature study. The results of this study show that immersive technologies have the considerable potential to provide massive support to stakeholders in the healthcare system during current COVID-19 situation and future pandemics.

Abstract
Background The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the healthcare and public health sectors. The impact of working on the frontlines as a healthcare or public health professional has been well documented. Healthcare organizations must support the psychological and mental health of those responding to future public health emergencies. Objective This systematic review aims to identify effective interventions to support healthcare workers' mental health and wellbeing during and following a public health emergency. Methods Eight scientific databases were searched from inception to 1 November 2022. Studies that described strategies to address the psychological impacts experienced by those responding to a public health emergency (i.e., a pandemic, epidemic, natural disaster, or mass casualty event) were eligible for inclusion. No limitations were placed based on study design, language, publication status, or publication date. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, and assessed methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tools. Discrepancies were resolved through discussion and a third reviewer when needed. Results were synthesized narratively due to the heterogeneity of populations and interventions. Outcomes were displayed graphically using harvest plots. Results A total of 20,018 records were screened, with 36 unique studies included in the review, 15 randomized controlled trials, and 21 quasi-experimental studies. Results indicate that psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and mind-body interventions may reduce symptoms of anxiety, burnout, depression, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, with the lowest risk of bias found among psychotherapy interventions. Psychoeducation appears most promising to increase resilience, with mind-body interventions having the most substantial evidence for increases in quality of life. Few organizational interventions were identified, with highly heterogeneous components. Conclusion Promoting healthcare workers' mental health is essential at an individual and health system level. Abstract
This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) and gamification interventions in addressing anxiety and depression. The review also seeks to identify gaps in the current VR treatment landscape and provide guidelines for future research and development. A systematic literature search was conducted using Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases, focusing on studies that utilized VR and gamification technology to address anxiety and depression disorders. A total of 2,664 studies were initially identified, 15 of those studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria for this systematic review. The efficacy of VR in addressing anxiety and depression was evident across all included studies. However, the diversity among VR interventions highlights the need for further investigation. It is advised to incorporate more diverse participant samples and larger cohorts and explore a broader spectrum of therapeutic approaches within VR interventions for addressing anxiety and depression to enhance the credibility of future research. Additionally, conducting studies in varying socioeconomic contexts would contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of their real-world applicability.

Abstract
Several forms of virtual reality (VR) have shown promise in treating mental disorders. However, there is a lack of research investigating the use of multicomponent immersive VR. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an immersive virtual reality (IVR) intervention that incorporated Japanese garden aesthetics, relaxation, and elements of Erickson's psychotherapy in alleviating depression and anxiety symptoms among elderly women. Sixty women with depressive symptoms were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Both groups received eight (twice a week for four weeks) low-intensity general fitness training sessions. The IVR group (n = 30) received eight additional VR-based relaxation sessions, whereas the control group (n = 30) received eight group relaxation. As outcome measures, the geriatric depression scale (GDS; primary) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; secondary) were administered before and after the interventions. The protocol was registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov PRS database (Registration number: NCT05285501). Patients receiving IVR therapy exhibited a greater significant reduction in the GDS (adjusted mean post-difference of 4.10; 95% CI = 2.27-5.93) and HADS (2.95; 95% CI = 0.98-4.92) scores than those receiving the control intervention. In conclusion, IVR with elements of psychotherapy, relaxation, and garden aesthetics may alleviate the severity of depression and anxiety symptoms in elderly women.

Abstract
Background: Immersive therapy through virtual reality represents a novel strategy used in psychological interventions, but there is still a need to strengthen the evidence on its effects on health professionals’ mental health. Objective: To analyze the results of immersive therapy through virtual reality on the levels of anxiety and well-being of the health professionals working in a regional hospital in Olot (Spain). Methods: Pilot quasi-experimental study including a group of 35 female (mean age = 45.7, SD = 8.43) health professionals who undertook immersive therapy for 8 weeks. The intervention was implemented through virtual reality, and its effect on anxiety levels and well-being was evaluated through the Hamilton and Eudemon scales, respectively. Data on age, gender, active pharmacological or psychological treatment, mental health disorders and number of sessions were also collected. Results: A statistically significant (p < 0.001) improvement in anxiety and well-being was found, with large and moderate effect sizes (0.90 and 0.63 respectively). In addition, these changes were clinically significant. No significant associations were found between the improvements and the different variables, but a greater trend was identified among the group of professionals with untreated or unidentified levels of anxiety. Conclusion: This group of health professionals showed a statistically and clinically significant improvement in anxiety and well-being after the application of immersive therapy using virtual reality. Further studies with a control group are necessary to further analyze this novel intervention.
