Abstract
BACKGROUND Average daily gain (ADG) is an important component affecting the profitability of sheep. However, research on the relationship between rumen microbes and sheep growth phenotype is still very lacking. Therefore, in this study, 16 Hu sheep were selected from a cohort of 318 sheep assigned to the same feeding and management conditions, and divided into high growth rate (HADG, n = 8) group and low growth rate (LADG, n = 8) group according to the extreme ADG value. Then, the differences in rumen microbes, rumen fermentation and animal immune parameters were further compared between groups to explore the potential role of rumen key microbes in regulating the health and growth performance of Hu sheep hosts. RESULTS The results showed that specific pathogenic bacteria associated with ADG, including Anaerotruncus, Sediminibacterium and Glaesserella, exhibited significant correlations with interleukin-6 (IL-6) and immunoglobulin G (IgG). These interactions disrupt immune homeostasis in the host, leading to a metabolic prioritization of energy resources toward immune responses, thereby impairing growth and development. Succinivibrio_dextrinosolvens was enriched in HADG sheep and exhibited a significant positive correlation with propionate levels. This promoted propionate production in the rumen, enhancing the metabolic activity of carbohydrate, amino acid and energy metabolism, ultimately contributing to higher ADG in sheep. Importantly, random forest analysis results showed that Succinivibrio_dextrinosolvens could classify sheep into HADG and LADG with a prediction accuracy of 81.2%. Additionally, we identified 34 bacteria belonged to connectors in the HADG co-occurrence network, including Alloprevotella, Phascolarctobacterium, Anaerovibrio, Butyricicoccus, Ruminococcaceae_noname, and Roseburia, etc., which play an important role in the degradation of carbohydrates and convert them into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), maintaining rumen health, and modulating inflammation. CONCLUSIONS In summary, key microbes in the rumen affect the overall healthy homeostasis and rumen fermentation of the host, leading to changes in energy utilization, which in turn affects the average daily gain of Hu sheep. Succinivibrio_dextrinosolvens is a promising biomarker for selecting high growth rate sheep in the future. This study provides a new method to manipulate rumen bacteria to improve growth performance in sheep.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION As the main active ingredient of the first FDA-approved phytochemical drug, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) can effectively alleviate glucolipid metabolic disorders. However, existing studies mainly focuses on the treatment of EGCG in disease models, with limited focus on its preventive effect on diseases in healthy models. OBJECTIVES This study investigated how EGCG prevents and alleviates T2DM through gut microbiota and multi-organ interactions in Wistar healthy rats and GK T2DM rats. METHODS The GK T2DM rat strain was established through repeated selective breeding of Wistar rats with glucose intolerance. Whether and how EGCG prevents and alleviates T2DM were evaluated, including glucose production and absorption efficiency, glucose transport, glucose metabolism, glucose excretion, T2DM-related tissue damage, gut microbiota, and liver transcriptome. RESULTS The health benefits of EGCG are primarily reliant on the involvement of the gut microbiota. Our study showed that although the specific microbial communities involved differ, the bidirectional interaction between EGCG and gut microbiota is widespread in healthy rats and T2DM rats. EGCG intervention elevated the relative abundance of specific microbial communities, which in turn promoted the metabolic processing of EGCG in the gut, producing numerous EGCG metabolites that may contribute to preventing and alleviating T2DM. In healthy rats, EGCG intervention selectively enhanced insulin secretion and serum insulin levels to prevent T2DM. In T2DM rats, EGCG intervention selectively lowered blood glucose levels, improved insulin resistance, delayed glucose production and absorption, and promoted urinary glucose excretion to alleviate T2DM. In both healthy and T2DM rats, EGCG intervention universally reduced gut microbiota-derived lipopolysaccharides, maintained systemic oxidative stress homeostasis, alleviated liver and kidney damage, increased muscle glycogen content, and promoted beige thermogenesis in white fat, thus demonstrating potential for preventing and alleviating T2DM. CONCLUSION As a natural active ingredient, EGCG could prevent and alleviate T2DM through gut microbiota and multi-organ interactions.

Abstract
Hypoxia has long posed a serious threat to the health of both animals and humans, causing respiratory acidosis, metabolic disorders, systemic inflammation, oxidative stress damage, and other issues, thereby endangering life and limiting development in high-altitude areas. Gut microbiota plays a crucial role in life activities and hypoxia adaptation. We transplanted the gut microbiota from small mammals, plateau zokors (Myospalax baileyi), from the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau (3,500 m) to Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats housed in a hypobaric chamber (equivalent to 6,000 m altitude) for 30 days. The results showed that microbiota transplantation significantly reshaped the gut microbiota structure of the rats, notably increasing the abundance of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria Lachnospiraceae and Prevotellaceae, alleviating hypoxia and acidosis, reducing pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular hypertrophy, increasing the production of anti-inflammatory substances like indole-3-lactic acid, and reducing the generation of pro-inflammatory substances, such as histamine and uric acid. It also decreased the expression of inflammatory genes like lgE, TNFα, and IFN-γ in the lung. Fecal microbiota transplantation from plateau-specific species to low-altitude SD rats effectively altered metabolism, changed gene expression, decreased pulmonary artery pressure, and enhanced plateau adaptability. This study demonstrates the potential effectiveness of treating hypoxic pulmonary hypertension through microbiota transplantation and offers insights into improving hypoxia adaptation. IMPORTANCE We report the beneficial effects of FMT on respiratory capacity, lung metabolism, and lung gene expression in SD rats under hypoxic conditions. We revealed the inhibitory effects of gut microbiota on lung mast cells and histamine expression under hypoxic conditions. The study demonstrated the potential effectiveness of treating HPH through FMT and offers insights into improving hypoxia adaptation.

Abstract
The gut bacterial community is essential for maintaining lifelong health and productivity in ruminants, but the relationship between the gut microbiota and the sustained productivity of ruminants remains inadequately understood. In this study, we selected long-lived dairy cows in mid-lactation (≥5 parities) with different levels of milk production (n = 10). Significant differences were observed in the rumen bacterial structures between the two groups of dairy cows, whereas no significant differences were detected in the rectum bacterial communities. Additionally, there were no significant differences in serum oxidative stress biomarkers, inflammatory markers, or immunological markers between the long-lived high-yield (LH) and long-lived low-yield (LL) dairy cows. Furthermore, the concentrations of propionate (Pr) in the rumen and butyrate (Bu) in the rectum were elevated in the high-yield group. Spearman correlation and microbial co-occurrence network analyses revealed that several rumen-enriched bacteria, such as Syntrophococcus, Lachnospira, Shuttleworthia, Erysipelotrichaceae_UCG-2, and Roseburiaare associated with rumen propionate (Pr) production. In the rectum, the reduced abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group and Moryella favors butyrate production. Furthermore, Random Forest machine learning analysis demonstrated that six bacterial taxa in the rumen combined with one serum biomarker, as well as three bacterial taxa in the rectum combined with three serum biomarkers, can serve as potential biomarkers for distinguishing between LH and long- LL dairy cows, achieving prediction accuracies of 92 and 99%, respectively. The findings of this study indicate that rumen and rectum bacteria are associated with the milk production phenotypes of dairy cows with sustained productivity. The rumen microbes are closely linked to the long-term productive capacity of dairy cows and represent a key target for the development of gut microbiota-based interventions. The unique bacterial communities of the rumen and rectum of long-lived high-yielding dairy cows contribute to maintaining their productive capacity.

Abstract
The Tibetan cattle, indispensable·animals on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, have become a focal point for the region's economic development. As such, the hybridization of these cattle has been recognized as a pivotal strategy to enhance the local cattle industry. However, research on the gut microbiota of Tibetan hybrid cattle remains scarce. Based on this, we conducted a comparative analysis of the gut microbiota and its functional implications across three distinct cattle populations: two the hybrid cattle populations (Tibetan local cattle × Holstein cattle, TH and Tibetan local cattle × Jersey cattle, TJ) and one the Tibetan locoal cattle population (BL). Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes dominate the gut microbiota across all populations at the phylum level. In addition, the predominant phyla in BL cattle were found to be Cyanobacteria, Verrucomicrobiota, and Actinobacteria, which may be one of the important reasons for the adaptability of Tibetan local cattle to the high-altitude environment of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Further analysis identified specific biomarkers associated with the immune systems of BL cattle, including Bacteroidales_RF16, Coriobacterium, and Muribaculaceae. In contrast, TH cattle are primarily dominated by Oscillospiraceae and Clostridia_UCG_014, and TJ cattle are mainly dominated by Christensenellaceae and Gammaproteobacteria. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that BL and TH cattle showed significant enrichment in the immune system, energy metabolism, and amino acid metabolism-related pathways compared with TJ cattle. Overall, these results suggest that BL and TH cattle demonstrate enhanced adaptability compared to TJ cattle, and indicate that intestinal microbiota of cattle at different altitudes and breeds have diverse structures and functions. Our study presents a new perspective on the role of the microbiome in the hybridization and enhancement of Tibetan cattle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The growth and health of young ruminants are regulated by their gut microbiome, which can have lifelong consequences. Compared with subjective grouping, phenotypic clustering might be a more comprehensive approach to revealing the relationship between calf growth state and core gut microbes. However, the identification of beneficial gut bacteria and its internal mechanisms of shaping host phenotype differentiation remains unclear. RESULTS In this study, calves were divided into two clusters, cluster1 and cluster2, based on 29 phenotypic indicators using cluster analysis. Calves in cluster2 showed better growth performance, including higher body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and dry matter intake (DMI), as well as better serum indicators with a high level of total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) compared to those in cluster1. Multi-omics was used to detect microbial features among calves in different phenotypic clusters. Distinct differences were observed between the two clustered gut microbiomes, including microbial diversity and composition. The close relationships between growth performance, blood metabolites, and microbiome were also confirmed. In cluster2, Bifidobacterium members were the dominant contributors to microbial metabolic functions with a higher abundance. Furthermore, pathways involved in carbohydrate degradation, glycolysis, and biosynthesis of propionate and proteins were active, while methane production was inhibited. In addition, the diversity and richness of hindgut resistome in cluster2 were lower than those in cluster1. The isolation and culture of Bifidobacterium strain, as well as the mice experiment, indicated that B. longum 1109 from calf feces in cluster2 could promote the growth of young hosts, enhance their blood immunity and antioxidation, and improve the development of hindgut. CONCLUSIONS In summary, cluster analysis has proved to be a feasible and reliable approach for identifying phenotypic subgroups of calves, prompting further exploration of host-microbiome interactions. Bifidobacterium as a core microbe in the hindgut of calves may play a crucial probiotic role in host phenotypic differentiation. This study enhances our comprehension of how gut core microbe shapes the host phenotype and provides new insights into the manipulation of beneficial gut colonizers to improve the growth performance and productivity of young ruminants. Abstract
This study investigated the effects of dietary 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) supplementation on growth performance, apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), blood profile, intestinal morphology, transcriptomics, and microbial composition in weaned piglets. A total of twenty-four 28-day-old weaned piglets (Landrace × Large Yorkshire, 8.28 ± 1.09 kg) were randomly divided into 3 dietary treatments with 8 replicates. The dietary treatments include basal diet (CON), CON diet containing 250 or 500 mg/kg 5-HTP. The results revealed that supplementation with 250 mg/kg 5-HTP significantly increased (P < 0.05) the average daily gain (ADG) and resulted in a lower (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR), while also decreased (P < 0.05) the diarrhea rate compared to the CON group. The ATTD of crude protein (CP) was lower in the 500 mg/kg group (P < 0.05) compared with the 250 mg/kg group. Furthermore, supplementation with 5-HTP led to significantly increased (P < 0.05) plasma albumin (ALB) and total protein (TP). In addition, supplementation with 5-HTP, particularly in the 250 mg/kg group, significantly increased (P < 0.05) serum serotonin (5-HT), growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels, and improved the ratio of villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum and ileum. The transcriptomic analysis revealed that the majority of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) induced by 5-HTP were related to digestion and immunity in the ileum, and 5-HTP enhanced (P < 0.05) intestinal glucose transporter 2 (GLUT2), solute carrier family 1 member 1 (SLC1A1) and solute carrier family 7 member 7 (SLC7A7) mRNA expression in weaned piglets. Furthermore, supplementation with 250 mg/kg 5-HTP increased (P < 0.05) abundance of Firmicutes, Actinobacteriota, Lachnospiracea, Ruminococcaceae and Megasphaera and decreased (P < 0.05) abundance of Spirochaetes and Treponema. Collectively, the study demonstrated that 5-HTP supplementation, particularly at 250 mg/kg, positively impacted growth performance, gut health, and microbiome composition in weaned piglets. These findings suggest the potential of using 5-HTP as a dietary supplement to enhance the health and productivity of weaned piglets.

Abstract
Livestock may respond differently to circadian rhythms, leading to differences in the composition of the animal products. Nevertheless, the circadian effects on rumen microorganisms and animal products are poorly understood. In the study, it was found that dairy cows exhibited increased milk fat levels, decreased acetic acid concentrations in the rumen fluid, and elevated acetic acid levels in the blood during the night compared to those of the day. Correlational analyses suggested a high association between Succiniclasticum, Lactobacillus, Prevotellacene NK3B31_group, Muribaculaceae_unclassified, etc., which were significantly enriched in rumen fluid at night, and milk fat levels. The differential metabolite Vitamin B6, significantly elevated at night, promoted the translocation of acetic acid into the circulation by increasing the level of rumen epithelial MCT1 protein expression. In addition, we found that both acetic acid treatment time and dose modulated the expression of lipid metabolism transcription factors (PPARγ, PPARα, and SREBP1c) and downstream genes (FASN, SCD1, ACCα, and CPT1A). Additionally, the mTORC1 and AMPK pathways were responsible for the effects of acetic acid on transcription factors and genes involved in lipid metabolism. Differences in rumen microbial taxa were observed between the day and night. Microbial metabolite (acetic acid) was found to be absorbed into the bloodstream and entered the mammary gland at night at a significantly elevated level. This regulation impacted the expression of lipid metabolism-related transcription factors (PPARγ, PPARα, and SREBP1c), as well as downstream genes through the mTORC1 and AMPK signaling pathways, ultimately affecting milk fat synthesis. These findings provide a new perspective for the microbial regulation of milk synthesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to reveal the influence of acute and chronic heat stress (HS) on the abundance and function of rumen microbiome and host metabolism. METHODS Forty mid-lactation goats were randomly divided into two artificial environments: control group and heat-stressed group. This study was recorded from two periods, 1 day and 28 days. The first day was defined as control 1 (CT1) and HS 1 (acute HS), and the last day was defined as CT28 and HS28 (chronic HS). On the first and last day, 6 dairy goats in each group were randomly selected to collect rumen liquid after the morning feeding through oral stomach tubes. The barn temperature and humidity were recorded every day. RESULTS Disruption of the rumen microbiome was observed under chronic HS, represented by an increase in the abundance of Prevotella and Bacteroidales (p<0.05), and upregulation of carbohydrate transport and metabolism functions (p<0.05). Additionally, the abundance of Succinimonas and Ruminobacter in chronic HS is lower than in acute HS (p<0.05), and the functions of intracellular trafficking, secretion and vesicular transport, and the cytoskeleton were downregulated (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The HS affected the interaction between the microbiota and host, thereby regulated milk production in dairy goats. These findings increased understanding of the crosstalk between hosts and bacteria.

Abstract
Background: Intestinal barrier injury contributes to multiple diseases such as obesity and diabetes, whereas no treatment options are available. Methods: Due to close interactions between mucosal microbiome and intestinal barrier, we evaluated the potential of mucosal bacteria in providing targets for high-fat diet (HFD)-related intestinal barrier injury. Whole-genome metagenomics was used to evaluate mucosal microbiome, while intestinal barrier injury was estimated using serum LPS, FITC-dextran intensity, and ZO-1 protein. Results: We found that HFD induced significant fat accumulation in epididymal tissue at weeks 4 and 12, while ALT, LDL, and TC increased at week 12. Intestinal barrier injury was confirmed by elevated serum LPS at both weeks, upregulated FITC-dextran intensity, and decreased ZO-1 protein at week 12. Fourteen species such as Phocaeicola vulgatus differed in HFD-fed mice. The co-occurrence network of mucosal microbiome shifted from scale-free graph in controls to nearly random graph in HFD-fed mice. Besides, 10 hub bacteria especially Bacteroides ovatus decreased drastically in both mucosal and fecal samples of HFD-fed mice, correlated with intestinal permeability, ALT, and KEGG pathways such as "Mitochondrial biogenesis" and "metabolism". Moreover, Bacteroides ovatus has been confirmed to improve intestinal barrier function in a recent study. Conclusion: Mucosal hub bacteria can provide potential targets for improving HFD-related intestinal barrier function.

Abstract
This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of using sugarcane bagasse (SB) as a substitute for soybean hulls and wheat bran in the diet of pregnant sows on their reproductive performance and gut microbiota. A total of seventy-two primiparous sows were randomly divided into four treatment groups, with eighteen replicates of one sow each. The sows were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0% (CON), 5%, 10%, and 15% SB to replace soybean hulls from day 57 of gestation until the day of the end of the gestation period. The results showed that SB contains higher levels of crude fiber (42.1%) and neutral detergent fiber (81.3%) than soybean hulls, and it also exhibited the highest volumetric expansion when soaked in water (50 g expanding to 389.8 mL) compared to the other six materials we tested (vegetable scraps, soybean hulls, wheat bran, rice bran meal, rice bran, and corn DDGS). Compared with the CON, 5% SB significantly increased the litter birth weight of piglets. Meanwhile, 10% and 15% SB significantly increased the rates of constipation and reduced the contents of isobutyric acid and isovaleric acid in feces. Furthermore, 10% and 15% SB significantly disturbed gut microbial diversity with increasing Streptococcus and decreasing Prevotellaceae_NK3B31-group and Christensenellaceae_R-7-group genera in feces. Interestingly, Streptococcus had a significant negative correlation with isobutyric acid, isovaleric acid, and fecal score, while Prevotellaceae_NK3B31-group and Christensenellaceae_R-7-group had a positive correlation with them. In conclusion, our study indicates that 5% SB can be used as an equivalent substitute for soybean hulls to improve the reproductive performance of sows without affecting their gut microbiota.

Abstract
Introduction Gut microbiota are associated with the health and performance of ruminant species, and they are affected by altitude, host genetics, and sex. However, there has been little research on comparing the fecal microbiota of indigenous small ruminants such as sheep and goats in Guizhou province, China. In the present study, we revealed the effect of altitude, genetics, and sex on fecal microbiota profiles and enterotypes in indigenous small ruminants of Guizhou province, China. Methods Fecal samples were collected from Hei and Qianbei Ma goats and Weining sheep in the Chinese province of Guizhou. 16S rRNA gene sequencing targeting the V3-V4 region was performed using the Illumina MiSeq platform. Sequences were processed using QIIME2, and the qualified sequences were processed using the plugin DADA2 to generate amplicon sequence variants (ASVs). The statistical analysis was performed using R studio. Results The fecal microbial profile was found to vary by herd (influenced by genetics/altitude) and sex. All samples were categorized into two enterotypes. The first enterotype is dominated by UCG-005, and the second enterotype is dominated by the Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, which may be highly driven by the host's genetics (breed). The predicted functional profiles of the fecal microbiota were also assigned to two clusters that corresponded exactly to the enterotypes. Cluster 1 of the functional profiling was characterized by biosynthesis pathways, and cluster 2 was characterized by energy metabolism pathways. Discussion Our findings may provide new insights into the fecal microbial community and enterotypes in small ruminants by herds, offering clues for understanding the mechanisms by which the fecal microbiota contribute to divergent host phenotypes in indigenous small ruminants in Guizhou.

Abstract
As one of the most abundant plant polyphenols in the human diet, (-)-epicatechin (EC) can improve insulin sensitivity and regulate glucose homeostasis. However, the primary mechanisms involved in EC anti-T2DM benefits remain unclear. The present study explored the effects of EC on the gut microbiota and liver transcriptome in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) Goto-Kakizaki rats for the first time. The findings showed that EC protected glucose homeostasis, alleviated systemic oxidative stress, relieved liver damage, and increased serum insulin. Further investigation showed that EC reshaped gut microbiota structure, including inhibiting the proliferation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-producing bacteria and reducing serum LPS. In addition, transcriptome analysis revealed that the insulin signaling pathway may be the core pathway of the EC anti-T2DM effect. Therefore, EC may modulate the gut microbiota and liver insulin signaling pathways by the gut-liver axis to alleviate T2DM. As a diet supplement, EC has promising potential in T2DM prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Microorganisms in the rumen play a crucial role in determining the most efficient utilization rate of nutrients. Among these microorganisms, Prevotella stands out as one of the most representative bacteria within the rumen biological system. Prevotella is a common strict anaerobic bacterium that is found in the gastrointestinal tract of livestock. Prevotella plays a crucial role in breaking down and metabolizing complex nutrients like cellulose and protein during food digestion. Moreover, it is capable of working together with other bacteria in the body's digestive system. Several studies have shown a strong correlation between the abundance of Prevotella and livestock growth performance. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the current research on the function, mechanisms, and applications of Prevotella in the gastrointestinal tract. The insights provided in this review could serve as a theoretical basis for accurately classifying Prevotella, further investigating its effects and potential mechanisms on livestock growth performance, and exploring its practical applications.

Abstract
Background Anisakis are globally distributed, marine parasitic nematodes that can cause human health problems, including symptoms such as vomiting, acute diarrhea, and allergic reactions. As parasitic nematodes that primarily affect the patient's digestive tract, intestinal helminths can interact directly with the host microbiota through physical contact, chemicals, or nutrient competition. It is widely accepted that the host microbiota plays a crucial role in the regulation of immunity. Materials and methods Nematodes collected from the abdominal cavity of marine fish were identified by molecular biology and live worms were artificially infected in rats. Infection was determined by indirect ELISA based on rat serum and worm extraction. Feces were collected for 16S rDNA-based analysis of microbiota diversity. Results Molecular biology identification based on ITS sequences identified the collected nematodes as A. pegreffii. The success of the artificial infection was determined by indirect ELISA based on serum and worm extraction from artificially infected rats. Microbiota diversity analysis showed that a total of 773 ASVs were generated, and PCoA showed that the infected group was differentiated from the control group. The control group contained five characterized genera (Prevotellaceae NK3B31 group, Turicibacter, Clostridium sensu stricto 1, Candidatus Stoquefichus, Lachnospira) and the infected group contained nine characterized genera (Rodentibacter, Christensenella, Dubosiella, Streptococcus, Anaeroplasma, Lactococcus, Papillibacter, Desulfovibrio, Roseburia). Based on the Wilcoxon test, four processes were found to be significant: bacterial secretion system, bacterial invasion of epithelial cells, bacterial chemotaxis, and ABC transporters. Conclusion This study is the first to analyze the diversity of the intestinal microbiota of rats infected with A. pegreffii and to determine the damage and regulation of metabolism and immunity caused by the infection in the rat gut. The findings provide a basis for further research on host-helminth-microbe correlationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We had earlier described the growth-promoting and -depressive effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with low (12.5% and 25%) and high (50% and 100%) inclusion levels of black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM), respectively, in Ross x Ross 708 broiler chicken diets. Herein, using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we investigated the effects of replacing SBM with increasing inclusion levels (0-100%) of BSFLM in broiler diets on the cecal bacterial community composition at each growth phase compared to broilers fed a basal corn-SBM diet with or without the in-feed antibiotic, bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD). We also evaluated the impact of low (12.5% and 25%) inclusion levels of BSFLM (LIL-BSFLM) on the prevalence of selected antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in litter and cecal samples from 35-day-old birds. RESULTS Compared to a conventional SBM-based broiler chicken diet, high (50 to100%) inclusion levels of BSFLM (HIL-BSFLM) significantly altered the cecal bacterial composition and structure, whereas LIL-BSFLM had a minimal effect. Differential abundance analysis further revealed that the ceca of birds fed 100% BSFLM consistently harbored a ~ 3 log-fold higher abundance of Romboutsia and a ~ 2 log-fold lower abundance of Shuttleworthia relative to those fed a BMD-supplemented control diet at all growth phases. Transient changes in the abundance of several potentially significant bacterial genera, primarily belonging to the class Clostridia, were also observed for birds fed HIL-BSFLM. At the finisher phase, Enterococci bacteria were enriched in the ceca of chickens raised without antibiotic, regardless of the level of dietary BSFLM. Additionally, bacitracin (bcrR) and macrolide (ermB) resistance genes were found to be less abundant in the ceca of chickens fed antibiotic-free diets, including either a corn-SBM or LIL-BSFLM diet. CONCLUSIONS Chickens fed a HIL-BSFLM presented with an imbalanced gut bacterial microbiota profile, which may be linked to the previously reported growth-depressing effects of a BSFLM diet. In contrast, LIL-BSFLM had a minimal effect on the composition of the cecal bacterial microbiota and did not enrich for selected ARGs. Thus, substitution of SBM with low levels of BSFLM in broiler diets could be a promising alternative to the antibiotic growth promoter, BMD, with the added-value of not enriching for bacitracin- and macrolide-associated ARGs.

Astaxanthin is a keto-based carotenoid mainly obtained from marine organisms, like Haematococcus pluvialis (H. pluvialis). Previous studies indicated the protective effects of Astaxanthin and H. pluvialis on aging related oxidative injury in liver, while the potential mechanisms are largely unknown. In addition, H. pluvialis residue is a by-product after astaxanthin extraction, which is rarely studied and utilized. The present study aimed to compare the effects of astaxanthin, H. pluvialis and H. pluvialis residue on the oxidant injury of liver in D-galactose-induced aging mice and explore the potential mechanisms through gut-liver axis. The results showed that all the three supplements prevented D-galactose-induced tissue injury, oxidative stress and chronic inflammation in liver and improved liver function. Gut microbiota analysis indicated that astaxanthin notably increased fecal levels of Bacteroidetes, unclassified_f__ Lachnospiraceae, norank_f__Lachnospiraceae, norank_f__norank_o__Clostridia_UCG-014, Prevotellaceae_ UCG-001, unclassified_f__Prevotellaceae in D-galactose-fed mice (p < 0.05). Compared to aging mice, H. pluvialis group had higher fecal levels of norank_f__Lachnospiraceae and Lachnospiraceae_UCG-006 (p < 0.05). H. pluvialis residue group displayed higher relative levels of Bacteroidetes, Streptococcus, and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the production of fecal microbial metabolites, like SCFAs and LPS was also differently restored by the three supplements. Overall, our results suggest astaxanthin, H. pluvialis and H. pluvialis residue could prevent aging related hepatic injury through gutliver axis and provide evidence for exploiting of H. pluvialis residue as a functional ingredient for the treatment of liver diseases. Future studies are needed to further clarify the effect and mechanism of dominant components of H. pluvialis residue on liver injury, which is expected to provide a reference for the high-value utilization of H. pluvialis resources.

Abstract
Mefentrifluconazole (MFZ) is an azole fungicide that is placed in agriculture for the control of fungal hazards. However, due to their non-biodegradability, azole fungicides can accumulate in plants, animals, and the environment, thus becoming a major health concern worldwide. In this study, we exposed 7-week-old C57BL/6 mice to 10, 30, and 100 mg/kg of MFZ for 28 d to assess the toxic effects of MFZ on the liver and gut tissues of the mice. Histopathological, biochemical indexes, and transcriptomic analyses revealed that MFZ exposure disrupted the liver structure and hepatic lipid metabolism as well as damaged gut barrier function and promoted inflammation in mice. Moreover, 16S rRNA sequencing demonstrated that MFZ exposure significantly increased the abundance of patescibacteria at the generic level. Also, MFZ exposure increased the abundance of bacterial genera associated with inhibition of glycolipid metabolism. These results suggested that the disruption of liver lipid metabolism caused by MFZ exposure may be caused by changes in gut microbiota function. This study provided a new disease occurrence study for risk assessment of MFZ and strengthened the focus on some novel fungicides.

Abstract
The intestinal microbiome plays a crucial role in animal health and growth by interacting with the host, inhibiting pathogenic microbial colonization, and regulating immunity. This study investigated dynamic changes in the fecal microbial composition of piglets from birth through weaning and the relationship between the piglet fecal microbiome and sows. Feces, skin, neonatal oral cavity, and vaginal samples were collected from eight sows and sixty-three piglets, and 16S genome sequencing was performed. The results revealed that Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria dominated the piglet microbiome in the early stages, and Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were crucial for maintaining a balance in the intestinal microbiome during nursing. The abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, Succinivibrio, and Prevotella increased in weaned piglets fed solid feed. Analysis of the microbiome from sows to piglets indicated a shift in the microbiome colonizing piglet intestines, which became a significant constituent of the piglet intestinal microbiome. This study supports the theory that the neonatal intestinal microbiome is vertically transmitted from the mother. Further research is required to integrate factors related to sows, piglets, and their environments to gain a better understanding of the early establishment of the intestinal microbiome in piglets.

Abstract
High growth rates and body weight are important traits of young dairy goats that can shorten generation intervals, improve animal performance, and increase economic benefits. In the present study, ninety-nine, 6-month-old, female goats were fed with the same diet and kept under the same management condition. The ten goats with highest average daily gain (ADG, HADG, 135.27 ± 4.59 g/d) and ten goats with lowest ADG (LADG, 87.74 ± 3.13 g/d) were selected to identify the key serum metabolites associated with ADG, and to investigate the relationships of serum metabolome profiles with digestive tract microbiota. The results showed that a total of 125 serum metabolites were significantly different between HADG and LADG. Of these, 43 serum metabolites were significantly higher levels in HADG, including D-ornithine, l-glutamine, L-histidine, carnosine, LysoPC (16:1(9Z)/0:0), DCTP and hydroxylysine, while, 82 serum metabolites were significantly higher levels in LADG, including P-salicylic acid and deoxycholic acid 3-glucuronide. Pathway analysis indicated that these different metabolites were mainly involved in amino acid and lipid metabolism. Furthermore, Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed that these differential serum metabolites were correlated with ADG and ADG-related bacteria. Notably, serum hydroxylysine and L-histidine could be used as biomarkers for distinguishing HADG and LADG goats, with an accuracy of >92.0%. SIGNIFICANCE: Our study confirms that individual microbiota and metabolic differences contribute to the variations of growth rate in young goats. Some serum metabolites may be useful in improving the growth performance of young goats, which provides directions for developing further nutritional regulation in the goat industry to achieve healthy feeding and efficiency enhancement.
